When Jack Swytech's former girlfriend asks him to defend her in a case brought by investors who advance payment on insurance policies when their beneficiaries have been diagnosed with a terminal condition, it looks like an easy win; Jessie Merrill wasn't dying after all, but since Viatical Settlements accepted her doctor's somewhat equivocal diagnosis, they don't stand a chance of getting their money back. Still celebrating his victory, Jack learns that Jessie has lied to him; like the shady, possibly Mob-connected company that advanced Jessie the money, he's been scammed. Then Jessie is murdered in a bizarre scenario that not only sets Jack up as the prime suspect but also threatens his marriage to the woman who is still traumatized by a vicious attack perpetrated by another of his erstwhile clients. Enlisting the aid of his best friend, an ex-con who will do anything to protect the man who saved him from death row, Jack attempts to clear his name by finding the real murderer, who turns out to have a secret worth killing for. The serpentine plot manages to hold the reader's attention despite characters who seem drawn from central casting and a meandering pace that doesn't exactly compel one to keep turning pages to unravel the mystery. --Jane Adams

Book Description

After six exciting thrillers in seven years, bestselling author James Grippando is at last bringing back the main character from his blockbuster debut novel, The Pardon.

Miami lawyer Jack Swyteck is smart and tough and up to his neck in trouble. With more than a decade of experience in the criminal courts, Jack doesn't handle many civil cases. But this one is different. His client is a gorgeous ex-girlfriend who's being sued because she thought she was going to die.

When Jessie Merrill was diagnosed with a deadly disease and given just two years to live, she worked a deal with an insurance company to get cash fast. In exchange, a group of wealthy investors were supposed to collect on the policy at her death. But Jessie was misdiagnosed. She isn't going to die anytime soon, and the investors want their money back. Now.

At the trial, Jack pulls off a brilliant victory and Jessie gets to keep the $1.5 million from the investors. Two days later, Jessie's body turns up in Jack's bathtub. Though it has the markings of suicide, Jessie's death quickly begins to look more like murder. As the evidence mounts against him, Jack finds himself on a collision course with dark secrets from the past and a possible killer who is beyond suspicion.

"E-book exclusive extra: "Dirty Blood and the Russian Mafiya: The Red Trail to Beyond Suspicion," an essay by James Grippando. In exchange, a group of wealthy investors were supposed to collect on the policy at her death. But Jessie was misdiagnosed. Two days later, Jessie's body turns up in Jack's bathtub. Though it has the markings of suicide, Jessie's death quickly begins to look more like murder -- with Jack the prime suspect. As the evidence mounts against him, Jack finds himself on a collision course with dark secrets from the past and a possible killer who is beyond suspicion."

4 out of 5 stars A Really Good Thriller!.......2007-06-26

This is my second Grippando novel (I previously read Under Cover of Darkness) and I am starting to become a fan of this author. This book takes a big turn from the other book and has a great deal more action and suspense. Jack Swieteck defends a former girlfriend who ends up dead in his own bathtub. To complicate matters she apparently was murdered because of a medical scam against a group of investors who had bet their funds that she would die of Lou Gehrig's Disease. At first Jack is the primary suspect but then the blame seems to shift to his friend Theo (a former death row inmate).

The book has the usual "unstoppable" assassin (Yuri) running around that likes to determine how his victim will die by whether or not they left their porchlight on. He gets involved in some really graphically described scenes of pure torture that could make the most insensitized individual cringe.

Meanwhile there is an avenger named Katrina (she is really Cuban but Katrina is her adopted Czech name) who you are never really sure what side of the playing field she is on.

The book is full of plot twists and turns and never gets boring.

4 out of 5 stars Suspicions Unfounded.......2006-09-05

After reading some of the reviews I was a little worried. Don't be worried. I really enjoyed Mr. Grippando's second installment of Jack's life. I'm not going to write a plot summary since Amazon and several reviewers do that quite well. I liked how fast paced this novel was and I did like the concept/ideas presented. I did agree with some of the other reviewers about how it wrapped up. Just felt it wrapped up way too quickly with some plot holes. I enjoy his books so maybe I'm a little bias. I do recommend this book in the series so you can understand the future books but The Pardon has been the best one so far that I've read.

3 out of 5 stars Not a good sequel.......2006-05-27

Albeit the theme's book is kind of new, the viatical story with the Russian mob, the book loses itself in overly Miami descriptions. It also makes the love story of the first book "The Pardon" a phony one because in this book you'll know that Jessie was distraught since she were nine. So many of the situations in both books were because of Jessie, not because of Jack.

If you read this book first than the other one you may like it because of the brisk pacing of the story. But that won't happen if you first read "The Pardon"

2 out of 5 stars letdownville.......2006-04-08

Started out great, but fizzled into a typical 3rd rate suspense yarn. I think this book has put me over the edge. I'm giving up reading books of this kind and will do more research on who is writing better stories that don't let me down at the end.

4 out of 5 stars OK - you already have an idea what the plot's about - .......2005-07-25

so you may be wondering if this book is worth your time.

'Beyond Suspicion' is a quick-moving book and is a sequel to Grippando's first published novel 'The Pardon'. I read 'The Pardon' many years ago, but reading the first book is not a necessary requirement - Grippando sets the stage very well in this book so it can be a 'stand alone' novel.

I shot through this book very quickly - the plot drags you in pretty well and Grippando's writing style keeps the book moving along at a quick pace. The main character is fairly average and his world is suddenly turned upside down by one case and its connections to the underworld. Murder, mayhem and one family crisis after another keep it interesting. Grippando fills this novel with a multitude on interesting characters, any one of which would be strong enough to be the main character in a book.

A good solid read - a great summertime novel.

After reading 'Got the Look' and 'Lying with Strangers', I had to go back and find all of the Grippando books I had missed. And because I became so attached to the adventures of Jack Swyteck, I had to start with the Swyteck suspense novels. A previous reviewer was correct when she said that reading the previous books will give you an appreciation for the special friendship between Jack and Theo.

4 out of 5 stars Expect the unexpected.......2005-07-15

This is older, maybe I should say classic Tom Holt. In fact, it goes back to a classic of western literatures, the Niebelungenlied - you know, Wotan, Valkyeries, the whole bunch that Wagner had people singing about. Those are the main themes. After that, the rest is Holt's comic improvisation on those riffs.

Basically, Malcolm Fisher, nebbish extraordinaire, has been granted ultimate power of life and death over all of Earth. His first use of this majestic for is to make funny faces in the mirror: his own, but other people's too. As it turns out, he's pretty good about that ultimate power thing, mostly because he doesn't really want it. After many dealings with gods, goddesses, Norns, Rhinemaidens, and other annoyances, it turns out that he's quite good with that ultimate power for lots of reasons --

-- which you'll have to read for yourself. This is Holt at his finest, a fitting peer to Pratchett. In another of his books he complains about reviewers (like me) who keep saying "his old stuff was better." Well, this is his old stuff, and I really do like it better. I hope you do too.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable takeoff on Wagner's Ring.......2003-04-11

You don't have to be familiar with Wagner's Ring cycle to enjoy this book, but it doesn't hurt--you'll get a few more of the jokes.

Malcolm Fisher, a nerdish Englishman, runs over a badger who just happens to be a disguised Giant who possesses the Ring of the Nibelung, as well as the magical Tarnhelm, allowing him to change his shape. Before Malcolm has time to do more than make a few experiments with his new possessions, he finds himself pursued by gods, dwarves, and amorous Rhinemaidens and Valkyries, and finds himself locked in a power stuggle with chief god Wotan. Can Malcolm overcome his retiring nature and the gods?

The allusions and takeoffs on the Ring operas are the funniest part of this book. But don't worry if you haven't seen them--a plot summary is included.

                  Highly recommended. Enjoy.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!.......2003-01-29

Holt is great. Some of his newer works aren't as solid IMO. But this one, Who's Afraid of Beowulf? and Flying Dutch are a must read!

4 out of 5 stars This is a Keeper - and it needs one, too.......2001-01-09

Those of you who pay attention to my reviews will notice that I gave this puppy a four-star rating, and I almost never do that. If four and a half were possible, that's what I'd put in.

Expecting Someone Taller riffs on Wagner. Fortunately, for those of you who ran out of video-tape or patience somewhere around the middle of the Ring Cycle, and aren't real sure what was happening in the parts you did watch, Tom Holt provides a plot summary. This tells you all you need to know about the Ring, and saves those who do not love opera from feeling that the whole thing has gone right over their heads.

This book is convulsively funny. Malcolm Fisher runs down a badger whose dying words are, "Funny, I was expecting someone taller." I opened it on my evening commute some years ago, and transferred to a bus full of people who had not been conditioned by smothered giggles to ignoring me. I read the line (I know I shouldn't quote, but I just can't resist), "Thank you, Please come again." I laughed out loud, and didn't stop laughing for several blocks. My fellow passengers, needless to say, were astonished.

Tom Holt does that to you. He knows his material, and has a great deal of fun ringing changes on it, and adheres to a certain mad logic. This one, especially, is very, very good. My copy is taped together. I still laugh when I re-read it. Yes, it's mad, but it's immense fun, and I recommend this whole-heartedly.

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny Update to Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2000-06-25

Ever wonder happened to the ring of the Nibelung after Gotterdammerung? Check this book out for a very funny update of the Ring to see how the hapless Malcolm inherits the all-powerful ring and becomes reluctant ruler of the world in modern-day England. He must confront contemporary incarnations of Alberich, Wotan, and some very seductive Rhinemaidens. The book is a good short (228 pages)fantasy novel that is lots of fun even if you don't know the Ring (and even funnier if you know the Ring well). It is great fun!

                    Book Description

I Was Expecting Someone Taller is actually a collection of people: working people, old people, street people, famous people--from Josephine Baker to Baryshinikov, a woman "lunching out" with Jesus to a barfly. These poetic portraits are truthful, sometimes tinged with black humour, other times political. Sue Nevill's people break through the flat, artificial surfaces of typical portraits and give us colourful, three-dimensional views of their unexpected natures.

Sue Nevill has the usual eclectic writerly background: jobs in advertising, archeological mudpits, bars, berry fields and book shops; obsessions that range from baseball to opera. Her poetry and short fiction have been appearing in Canadian, British and U.S. magazines since 1987. A long-time resident of Vancouver, Nevill works as a freelance writer and editor.

                              Product Description

After the changes from the twentieth century to the Dark Ages overnight -- such was fate that befell Britain five years from now. Machines were shunned and witchcraft had become the order of the day. Superstition and all the narrowness of the medieval era was the way of the populace and those who believed in science and mechanics fled the island. To this strangely changed land, two return to seek the source of the blight that had so altered the natural laws. Geoffrey, the condemned weathermonger of Weymouth, and his sister, slip back, take over a still-functioning Rolls Royce Silver Ghost and follow the lightning to a terrifying confrontation between myth and science.

The Weathermonger concludes The Changes Trilogy, with Margaret and Jonathan not only being attacked by the people of England but also by the weather. Everything, including nature, now opposes our duo in their quest to restore acceptance of technology to the larger Brittish isle. They must brave the worst to find a solution long dead and a man who may not want to help them. An interesting solution to an intriuging series

                                        Book Description

It's a classic steakhouse, a superb Italian-American restaurant, a power-lunch mainstay, and the oldest family-owned, white-tablecloth restaurant group in the country, with 28 locations in 24 cities-each one administered by third-generation descendants of the original owners. Now, finally, everyone can learn the cooking technique that makes Palm steaks and chops so delectably juicy. In over 125 recipes, the secrets behind some of the Palm's most requested dishes are revealed by executive chef Tony Tammero, with recipes for Steak à la Stone, Monday Night Salad, Veal Martini, Clams Oreganato, Spaghetti Carbonara, Gigi Salad, and quite possibly the best creamed spinach on the planet. Because each dish at the Palm has a story behind it, this is a cookbook filled with real-life stories, celebrity anecdotes, vivid characters, and the very special flavor of a restaurant that has prospered while remaining true to the original owners' credo: "Exceed the customer's expectation, and treat everyone who walks through our door as if they are family."

After an enjoyable dinner experience at The Palm Restaurant in Las Vegas, I thought about purchasing the restaurant's cookbook as a souvenir remembrance of our Las Vegas trip in January 2007. The book arrived last week and I prepared beef tenderloin steaks using the book's steak recipe. Wow, this is the only recipe I will now use for cooking steaks. I've already bookmarked several seafood dishes for the coming week. Buy the book, it's worth the price just for the steak preparation recipe.

                                        4 out of 5 stars El.......2005-09-15

I liked this book very much, it has a really good steak, (filet mignon) receipe, I made the best steak ever. If you like to eat out at steakhouses, this is the book for you.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Mmmmmm ..... steak ..............2004-01-29

When people ask me about a book that has changed my life I now tell them about this one.

I used to think I knew how to cook a steak. I had no idea. I takes a long time (which is mostly waiting, not much working, so buy some wine too) but it is definitely worth it. I've never been to the Palm so they probably do it even better there, but for me the New York strip I made following this recipe was just about the best meal I've ever had! Sorry mom.

Buy this book right now. Pick up a couple of NY Strips when you get it. Follow the directions exactly. Write a thank you note to the publisher.

The side dishes, especially the creamed spinach and the mushrooms are also top notch. I may get to the pasta and the rest eventually, but for now I'm eating an unhealthy amount of steak.

                                        5 out of 5 stars High Five.......2004-01-24

The receipe on how to prepare a first rate steak is worth the price of the book. I purchased some prime bone in rib eyes from my butcher and enjoyed a first rate steak house meal in the comforts of my home.

                                        The Italian receipes are great.

5 out of 5 stars Who would have cooked a steak this way?.......2004-01-09

So, I have very happy memories of the Palm, mostly the one in DC, growing up. The ultimate special occasion food.

So I was nervous looking at the cookbook. Was it a case of, Kids, Don't Try This At Home?

The reality couldn't have been more different. This is the Anti-French-Laundry cookbook, where everything comes together quickly and easily, and you hit your head sqarely for not having thought of it yourself.

The big insight for me was a very odd yet extremely effective way of cooking steaks. I've cooked lots of fine steaks, but the way they suggest worked perfectly. And it was, you know, different, but great for entertaining. And it tasted wonderful.

I *think* this would be a good cookbook even if you haven't had a great time at the Palm, but if you have, it's great. Five stars.
