Book Description

We are behind, and below, the scenes of JFK's presidential election, the Bay of Pigs, the assassination--in the underworld that connects Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, D.C. . . .

Where the CIA, the Mob, J. Edgar Hoover, Howard Hughes, Jimmy Hoffa, Cuban political exiles, and various loose cannons conspire in a covert anarchy . . .

Where the right drugs, the right amount of cash, the right murder, buys a moment of a man's loyalty . . .

Where three renegade law-enforcement officers--a former L.A. cop and two FBI agents--are shaping events with the virulence of their greed and hatred, riding full-blast shotgun into history. . . .

James Ellroy's trademark nothing-spared rendering of reality, blistering language, and relentless narrative pace are here in electrifying abundance, put to work in a novel as shocking and daring as anything he's written: a secret history that zeroes in on a time still shrouded in secrets and blows it wide open.

5 out of 5 stars They'll be talking about this book 500 years from now.......2007-06-13

Let's get one thing straight. This book is bigger than your house. Taller, wider, deeper and more powerful than anything you have beheld up to now, it takes the myth that was once 'nice' John F Kennedy, fleeces it, rips the guts out of it and blasts the remains into the gutter from where it started.

This is a 600 page novel with a world-famous ending, the assassination of JFK. So you think, why should I read it? Well, it will change your knowledge (or what you had been taught) about one of the most significant periods in American History, and it will tell you things you definitely didn't know about a whole string of household names : Jack Kennedy, kid brother Robert, their seriously bad-news father 'Irish Joe' Kennedy, J.Edgar Hoover, Howard Hughes, Jimmy Hoffa, Fidel Castro, Richard Nixon, Lyndon B Johnson, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner and a colourful list of 'made-guy' underworld gangsters such as Santo Trafficante, Carlos Marcello, Johnny Rosselli and Sam Giancana. One of the low-life gangsters featured is a certain Jack Ruby, and I think we all know what he is best known for. In fact this novel is so daringly matter-of-fact about the lives (and loves) of most of the above-named that it makes me wonder how it ever came to be published at all. And it's no over-statement to suggest that you could write a book about this book.

It is, at the end of the day, a novel, which is to say a work of fiction, but I for one wanted to believe that every element of it was true because it helped me to understand so much more than I had been 'educated' to believe in the newspapers and other media down the years. But essentially American Tabloid surrounds the inter-twining lives of three men : hit-man Pete Bondurant, and two federal agents Kemper Boyd and his once protégé Ward Littell. Boyd devotes his career and in turn his life to the Kennedy cause and is nearly ruined when they ultimately turn against him. Littell dedicates his life, and takes life-threatening risks in doing so, to help expose the corruption behind the Kennedy family and the Jimmy Hoffa union rackets - and again gets trodden on by those he thinks he is working for. These two men end up in very different positions and with inverted political attitudes as a result. Meanwhile Bondurant flits between hits for Hughes, Hoffa, the FBI and the CIA and at times rightly regards himself as a CIA agent. Drugs abound, indeed heroin seems to be the leading if not traditional currency for the CIA in its financing of plans to invade Cuba and oust the new leader Fidel Castro.

The time period covered is 22nd November 1958 to the same date in 1963 - the two-year run-up to the 1960 US Election and the 1000-day tenure of JFK as President until his assassination in Dallas. But if like me you've always wanted to know who shot him, why he was shot, and many other questions surrounding his brief presidency, then American Tabloid must surely be the most eye-opening source of information even if it must presumably have its inaccuracies. The writing style may not be to everyone's taste (although I quickly became accustomed to it), but if you're only half interested in What Really Happened to JFK (and the Bay of Pigs disaster), you really must read American Tabloid. It truly is a revelation.

And if you love this, the great news is that you can then read The Cold Six Thousand, which is as instant a sequel as you could ask for, as it begins on the day of the John F Kennedy assassination and leads up to the killing of baby brother Bobby. Be in no doubt - James Ellroy stands tall among all peers and is, in my considered view, one of the very best writers alive today.

5 out of 5 stars A secret history of the Kennedy assassination.......2007-05-16

"They were rogue cops and shakedown artists. They were wiretappers and soldiers of fortune and f****t lounge entertainers. Had one second of their lives deviated off course, American History would not exist as we know it. It's time to demythologize an era and build a new myth from the gutter to the stars. It's time to embrace bad men and the price they paid to secretly define their time. Here's to them.

--from the introduction

James Ellroy has never been afraid to explore the sordid. His heroes (anti heroes?) are amoral creeps (usually cops) who'd betray their own mothers in the pursuit of quick cash. There are three such men in American Tabloid, Ellroy's fictional take on the Kennedy assassination--Kemper Boyd (who serves the Kennedy brothers, the FBI and the CIA simultaneously), Ward Littell (a disillusioned G-man turned Mob lawyer), and Pete Bondurant (a Howard Hughes bag man who becomes a linchpin in the ill fated Bay of Pigs operation). Three men, blinded by greed, patriotism, ambition and hate. Three men that history knows nothing about, but whose actions ultimately lead to the brutal murder of John F. Kennedy.

At the request of J. Edgar Hoover, Kemper Boyd ingratiates himself with the Kennedy brothers, first serving on the McClellan committee, then in the Kennedy administration. While serving in this capacity, Boyd finds time to align himself with the CIA, the Mafia, drug runners and anti-Castro refugees. Boyd lives in a world where no one is pure, deceit is commonplace and strange bedfellows are the rule. At first, he easily negotiates the complexities of this world. Eventually, however, things fall apart, and an American president dies as a result.

This book will shock, horrify, entertain and amuse. It's truly a tour de force in crime fiction. Ellroy's writing is hypnotic--the best analogy I can come up with is to compare it to improvised jazz. Especially amusing is his use of alliteration when he drops into the style of Hush-Hush magazine, a gossip rag supported by Howard Hughes. Lines like "Cancerous Castro communistically calcifies Cuba while heroic hermanos hunger for homeland" proliferate.

Read American Tabloid and see why many consider James Ellroy to be the premiere crime novelist of his generation.

Ellroy's spartan prose runs contrary to the polished and impersonal history of text books and screenplays. His 'history-as-tabloid headlines' is a visceral view of America rife with corruption at every level, struggling with itself at a time of chaos and change.
'Tabloid' drives you through a violent landscape with characters like: JFK, RFK, Howard Hughes and J. Edger Hoover as signposts headed toward an uncertain future.

5 out of 5 stars Hard, gritty and vastly entertaining.......2007-04-02

Out of all of the Ellroy books of this genre, American Tabloid has the most depth and hard boiled noir fiction written in modern times. Set in the 50's like most of Ellroy's works, this story features a young Lawyer Robert Kennedy and his obsession with pinning down Jimmy Hoffa. The story also features characters like hard nose FBI agents and an ex-rogue cop and freelance goon.

This story features more political intrigue than his other works and goes into the lives of many historic figures like JFK, Howard Hughes and J. Edger Hoover that dot this work of fiction and makes for a much more intriguing story. If you're a fan of Ellory's other works that might be a bit better know that spawned Hollywood movies (LA Confidential and the Black Dahlia.) Give this one a read and see for yourself. If you're a fan of Crime fiction and noir and haven't read his work yet, you really haven't read anything this engrossing, shockingly detailed and just cool. The personalities, crime, political landscape of this era sets for one of the most volatile times in US history.

You must read this book. You'll never see this one made into a movie; the story is just far too vast. Well, never say never, but this would be a Godfather, Lord of the rings scale project to include half of the depth that is in this intricately woven plot. It's always a challenge to adapt Ellory's work because of the way he spins his dialog in his traditional Ellory-esk cadence. It's noir with a shot of adrenaline and grain alcohol

5 out of 5 stars Superb action packed book.......2007-07-08

Another great book by Tim Green. With each book, Green matures as an author. In American Outrage, he juxtaposes a son looking for his real birth mother with organized crime and a behind the scene look into a tabloid news show. From the first page to the last, this book is packed with action and leaves the reader rotting for the heroes to succeed in their mission. If you are a fan of Grisham, DeMille, Patterson and other Green books, you will love this one. Definitely one of his best works.

4 out of 5 stars Most interesting and challenging work to date........2007-05-30

Has Tim Green really been writing for over a decade? AMERICAN OUTRAGE, his 12th novel, is arguably his most interesting and challenging work to date. The former host of "A Current Affair" uses the experience of working for a TV newsmagazine to great advantage in this book.

Jake Carlson is a successful, though aging, television commentator with an instantly recognizable countenance and a life that most people dream about. However, he is privately reeling, having recently suffered the loss of his wife to cancer. Meanwhile, his adopted son, Sam, is acting out, partially in reaction to his mother's death. Carlson is drinking a bit too much and missing assignments too often for an anchor who is rapidly approaching middle age.

To make matters more complicated, Sam asks his foster dad to use considerable resources to find his birth parents. Carlson knows next to nothing about Sam's origins, having obtained Sam through an adoption agency that had informed him they specialized in placing orphaned Albanian children.

As Carlson delves into Sam's background, the story begins to unravel. The agency that Carlson and his wife used is out of business, the owner apparently having committed suicide. When Carlson starts asking questions, he receives anonymous warnings telling him to back off his investigation. It's not long before Carlson finds himself on a collision course not only with the Albanian mob but also with one of America's oldest and most powerful families --- which appears to have an unexpected tie to Sam as well.

AMERICAN OUTRAGE starts off a bit slowly, but patient readers will be rewarded in the second half, which contains some of the best writing Green has ever done. He drops a number of surprises throughout --- one of the biggest at the halfway point, when he unexpectedly takes a major character piece off the board --- and as the closing pages fly by, it's anyone's guess as to how things will end. This is a strong work by one of the more consistently dependable authors.

Reviewed by Thomas Gabrielli for Reader Views (5/07)

Jake is a widower and television investigative reporter for "American Outrage," a daily tabloid news show. One day, Sam, his adopted son, due to trouble at school with his classmates, asks him to help find his birthmother for him. Jake agrees, and thus begins an adventure that involves Albanian child trafficking, a shifty lawyer, an even shiftier politician, and a mysterious yet beautiful woman with a scar down the side of her face. And that's just skimming the surface of this thriller.

Make no mistake about "American Outrage:" this is a good read; a very good read. Tim Green is quick to set up the plot and hurl the reader into an engrossing story that is believable and entertaining. Throughout, Green leaves you dangling with suspense at the end of chapters, making you want to continue to read on. This man knows how to write!

It's refreshing to read a novel that does not involve high-level espionage, terrorism or whose central, pivotal character is electronic in nature. The plot begins with a simple request from Jake's son - to find his real mother - that unravels into a very complicated yet real situation. And while Jake is focused on this mission, he still has to balance his professional life with the task of finding Sam's real mother. Complications and priorities at work just add to the tension already set by the complications and priorities of Sam's request.

While reading this, I couldn't help but compare Green's writing to that of one of my favorite authors, Harlan Coben. Like Coben, Green brings a high level of suspense to his writing, introducing seemingly normal characters in normal situations, yet giving the reader a [futile] chance to figure out the mystery before the book ends. But Green doesn't tidy everything up until the last few pages, offering the reader a good ride for the read.

Obviously, I'm not saying too much about the plot here for fear of spoiling some of the twists and turns. However, if I need to make one criticism of the book (which is why I gave it four stars instead of five), it is one involving Jake's thirteen-year old son, Sam. At thirteen, his son is much too intelligent, too independent and too intuitive for his age. While I realize that this helped the storyline, at times Sam's actions were just not realistic or believable. Green perhaps should have given Jake a more experienced "partner in crime;" perhaps a colleague from the television studio? Or maybe just an older son.

While I am almost embarrassed to admit that "American Outrage" was the first book I have read by author Tim Green, it certainly won't be my last. I strongly recommend this book for those looking for a good suspense mystery with interesting characters and subplots, twists and turns, and a climax that is exciting, logical and fulfilling. This is the best and most fun read I've had in quite some time.

    4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars.......2007-05-11

Tim Green's latest starts at a slow to moderate pace, but towards the middle of the novel it was a race to the end. His characters seem real and his story telling ability seems to improve with each novel. This novel was an improvement over his last one, which was 'Kingdom Come'.

3 out of 5 stars another entertaining Tim Green tale.......2007-05-01

I have enjoyed Tim Green's fiction and his development as an author after watching him dissect the NFL as a TV commentator. His early fiction was based on pro football, but his latest books have more of a focus on Green's own life after football with somewhat of an emphasis on legal themes. Green has developed a pretty good knack for coming up with a unique premise. In this book, he combines the fast-paced storytelling of his fiction in the search for a biological mother, something Green has written non-fiction about before. Usually, the story peaks a little too quickly, but American Outrage keeps going right up to the finale. Without giving anything away, the setting of the finale being on a golf course reminded me a little of Double Reverse, one of Green's earlier novels, and it occurred to me how much improved his fiction has become over that time. Some of his more recent books were a little too far-fetched at key moments, but I didn't really see as much of that in this book. The only criticism I would have of this book is how a certain character element basically disappeared through the middle of the book. Overall, American Outrage is an enjoyable story with a satisfying conclusion.

    Book Description

Contemporary critical studies have recently experienced a significant spatial turn. In what may eventually be seen as one of the most important intellectual and political developments in the late twentieth century, scholars have begun to interpret space and the embracing spatiality of human life with the same critical insight and emphasis that has traditionally been given to time and history on the one hand, and social relations and society on the other. Thirdspace is both an enquiry into the origins and impact of the spatial turn and an attempt to expand the scope and practical relevance of how we think about space and such related concepts as place, location, landscape, architecture, environment, home, city, region, territory, and geography. The book's central argument is that spatial thinking, or what has been called the geographical or spatial imagination, has tended to be bicameral, or confined to two approaches. Spatiality is either seen as concrete material forms to be mapped, analyzed, and explained; or as mental constructs, ideas about and representations of space and its social significance. Edward Soja critically re-evaluates this dualism to create an alternative approach, one that comprehends both the material and mental dimensions of spatiality but also extends beyond them to new and different modes of spatial thinking.Thirdspace is composed as a sequence of intellectual and empirical journeys, beginning with a spatial biography of Henri Lefebvre and his adventurous conceptualization of social space as simultaneously perceived, conceived, and lived. The author draws on Lefebvre to describe a trialectics of spatiality that threads though all subsequent journeys, reappearing in many new forms in bell hooks evocative exploration of the margins as a space of radical openness; in post-modern spatial feminist interpretations of the interplay of race, class, and gender; in the postcolonial critique and the new cultural politics of difference and identity; in Michel Foucault's heterotopologies and trialectics of space, knowledge, and power; and in interpretative tours of the Citadel of downtown Los Angeles, the Exopolis of Orange County, and the Centrum of Amsterdam.

    3 out of 5 stars Applied Lefebvre.......2001-08-07

This book is not a bad book. It is an overly unoriginal one. An understanding of Henri Lefebvre's work on space (particularly _The Production of Space_) is required to understand what Soja is saying. Yet, if you have read Lefebvre, you probably do not need to read this book. About 1/3 of _Thirdspace_ consists of quotes from Lefebvre with a few conclusionary remarks made by Soja.

Soja's pastiche of Lefebvre quotes claims to explain two trialectical relationships. The first is the trialectics of being (p. 71), consisting of historicality, sociality, and spatiality. The second is the trialectics of spatiality (p. 74): perceived, conceived, and lived. Thank goodness for the helpful diagrams on these pages. They are the only parts of the theory sections that aren't based on long quotes from Lefebvre, White, Foucault, hooks, and any other person that Soja has read in the last 20 years. If you need original arguments about how space is performed, constructed, and lived, read one Soja's sources (especially "Production_).

The original arguments come when Soja leaves the realm of theory construction and turns to application. His reading of space and place in postmodern Los Angeles makes an important leap in spatial theory... it applies theory to something people can understand. If you have visited a large city, Soja's reading of L.A. will make sense, and make Lefebvre clearer. This is the most useful function of _Thirdspace_.

Although this book is not theoretically new or interesting, it gets some extra stars for having practical relevance... something that most theoreticians could use more of.

Most of the B5 fans I know were disappointed in the Thirdsapce movie. (It didn't compare well to the incredible effort of In The Beginning.) However, Thirdspace is actually a pretty nice story that comes out much better in the print version.

Things certainly make much more sense, at least.

I do notice a distressing similarity to "The Touch of Your Shadow, the Whisper of Your Name" (novel 5) -- they're by no means the exact same story, but they are similar.

I love Peter David, and I love B5, so the two combined is very cool! If you are picking which B5 books to read, pick this one, In the Begining or To Dream in the City of Sorrows. They are just as good as the show/movies. If you saw the movie of this and liked it, read the book too, it has more than just what was in the movie!

Babylon 5 is the best show ever made! The depth of which J. Michael Straczynski has created is far beyond all other Sci-Fi series or books I have ever heard of. He is Genius.

4 out of 5 stars A Novel that is far much better than the movie in someparts.......1998-11-04

This novel is a quick mover and the type of novel that you can eat somewith or drink with. The type that you read when you want to have a good time and have fun with it, unlike David's novel, In The Being that was more serious and emtioal. In this one, you don't after reading ready emtional drain and a little born. In this one you have fun readying it and you want to read more and more of it until you are tried or it is over with. It like a saturday maintie movie, with no real message from it, it just there to make you[The Reader] have fun.

        Book Description

Teaching/Writing in Thirdspaces: The Studio Model examines a dynamic approach to teaching composition that reimagines not only the physical space in which writing and learning occurs but also the place occupied by composition in the power structure of universities and colleges.

In response to financial and programmatic cutbacks at the University of South Carolina in the 1990s, authors Rhonda C. Grego and Nancy S. Thompson used their academic backgrounds in composition and English education, along with their personal histories in working-class families, to look at compositional spaces and places with an eye to challenging the embedded issues of race, class, and gender within the university hierarchies. The result was a supplemental writing program that they called the writing studio.

The studio model emphasizes individual participation in a small group that allows students to present work they are preparing for outside classes, discuss their challenges, and refine their ideas with other students and staff facilitators. This “interactional inquiry” is replicated and reinforced by the facilitators, who meet in their own small groups to analyze larger patterns, possibilities, and needs as they arise in their studios.

Grego and Thompson argue that because the studio is physically and institutionally “outside but alongside” both students’ other coursework and the hierarchy of the institution, it represents a “thirdspace,” a unique position in which to effect institutional change. The focus on interactional inquiry challenges traditional power hierarchies within classrooms and shifts the nature of discourse. As a bottom-up approach to the development of educational programs within institutions that have different needs, demographies, and histories, the studio model can address a multitude of different institutional needs with little disruption to the curriculum.

The studio model allows university administrators, teachers, student aides, and students to continually adapt to changing institutional environments with new teaching and learning strategies. Teaching/Writing in Thirdspaces provides an alternative approach to traditional basic writing courses that can be adopted in educational institutions of all types and at all levels.

              Book Description

In 2261 the galaxy was thrown into upheaval in the wake of the last great Shadow War, and the galaxy was caught between ages. It was a time of great change and the responsibilities of the younger races were compounded by the loss of the Ancients. The galaxy - and all within it - was theirs. When a huge and ancient artefact was found drifting in hyperspace by flight crews of the newly neutral Babylon 5, it was brought back to the station to be studied. Bringing the artefact into realspace would trigger a chain of events the Vorlons were only able to postpone at their strongest, that would test the tenacity of Captain Sheridan and his crew to the fullest. Through the artefact they found a dimension they called Thirdspace, and the Harbingers it was home to. This is a sourcebook for the Babylon 5 Roleplaying Game Second Edition that explains in more detail the events that take place in the Babylon 5 telemovie Thirdspace. Such a massive event would send ripples through the galaxy, and this book explains a few of them. Containing rules on how the Thirdsace gate affected Babylon 5 and its occupants, statistics for the deadly Harbingers and the personalities involved, this sourcebook gives readers everything they need to use the events in their own campaigns - if they dare to do so.

Williams-Sonoma, purveyor of choice gourmet products and kitchenware, has also created a collection of succinct yet comprehensive cookbooks. Part of the series, Soup offers 40 all-occasion recipes that reflect the company's signature good taste. Well-chosen formulas for what is surely the world's most satisfying food include classics like Chicken Noodle Soup, Shrimp Bisque, and French Onion Soup; simple soups like Garlic Stracciatella; and dinner-party specialties such as Three-Mushroom Soup with Sherry. Recipes for summer and winter soups like Curried Corn Soup and White Bean, Pasta and Swiss Chard Soup take advantage of seasonal bounty, while a concluding section entirely devoted to chicken soups such as Tortilla Soup with Chicken and Avocado gives readers more of soup in its most comforting form.

Accompanied by color photos that show the soups in all their glory, the global recipes are completely doable, and should appeal to a wide range of cooks. Throughout, sidebars (like "Garlic Croutons") offer useful information on techniques and ingredients; a glossary and basics section are also helpful. Though small in size, the book provides an inclusive store of superior recipes and instruction. --Arthur Boehm

"Yo Diggity", would be the phrase that comes to mind when I'm searching through my cook books and this one catches my eye. That or "booya". I can't decide. I love soup. A lot. I like making soup too and this book has really good recipes that are easy to follow. For the recipes that call for chicken, beef or vegetable stock,...if you like homemade stock better,(who doesn't) but don't know how to make it,..HAVE NO FEAR! SOUP will teach you. It has recipes for all kinds of soups,..miso, hot and sour, shrimp bisque, chowders,.. all kinds. This book simply excites me.

              5 out of 5 stars great book.......2005-12-12

I got this book about a week ago and it was so tempting that I have already made 3 soups! they were all great and super easy. Highly reccomended

              2 out of 5 stars Mixed Results.......2005-02-22

William's-Sonoma has an excellent recipe book layout; their bright colorful pictures and easy-to-read text always make a nice impression on me. While selecting my first trial recipes I noticed that if a person wanted to, he or she could preplan menus with this book. Many of the soups call for similar base ingredients and stocks so different soups could be created on consecutive days.

I've tried two recipes out of this book, one was excellent and the other was a disaster. I thought that the vegetable stock recipe is incredible and know that I will use it again; it is incredibly full of flavor and healthy. I cannot say the same about the split pea soup recipe.

The pea soup recipe sounded like a nice idea but it was not creamy enough to my taste. In fact, it wasn't creamy at all. The soup turned out gritty and chewy with a poor texture. I think that the recipe has some good flavor possibilities but needs more work to incorporate a smoother texture with more liquid that will allow the dried peas to adequately cook.

Maybe I just picked the worst recipe out of the book to try first but a 50/50 likelihood of recipe failure makes me hesitant to try another recipe.

              5 out of 5 stars Soup Book.......2004-03-15

I think that this is a great soup book. All of the soups are very accessible in the variety of ingredients that they require and the 5-8 soups that I've made have been supurb. There is a soup for every occasion, and several for every season. If you enjoy soup, like to have easy recipes on hand as well as a few that make you feel a little like a real chef, this is the book for you. One of the three recipe books that I look at on a regular basis.

5 out of 5 stars Not a bad recipe in the bunch!.......2003-12-28

I was given this book as a gift 2 years ago and I can't say enough good things about it. I was a little shy of soup making at the time, but have been so amazed that every single recipe I've made from this book has been fantastic. I attribute that to well-written recipes, they really are fool proof.

I think you'll be happier with this book if you own a hand blender, as nearly every recipe calls for some pureeing, and it is SO much easier with a hand blender.

This book has been in the Williams Sonoma stores for about a month (at full price) and I drool over it everytime I go into the store. I have been waiting to buy it from Amazon at the reduced price. The book is full of soup and stew recipes that appear yummy without being too complicated (I'm going to try the Coq au Vin immediately) and the illustrations are beautiful.
