Book Description

Cajun police detective Dave Robicheaux knows the Sonnier family of New Iberia--their connections to the CIA, the mob, and to a former Klansman now running for state office. And he knows their past, as dark and murky as a night on the Louisiana bayou.

An assassination attempt and the death of a cop draw Robicheaux into the Sonniers' dangerous web of madness, murder and incest.

But Robicheaux has devils of his own. And they've come out of hiding to destroy the tormented investigator--and the two people he holds most dear.

3 out of 5 stars Not his best.......2007-08-17

I'm reading his books in order and this is number 5. It's not as boring as Black Cherry Blues but certainly falls far short of the other 3. This one can be skipped as like Black Cherry it contains no "significant" changes in Dave's life.

4 out of 5 stars He Signs a Case with a Baseball Bat.......2007-06-13

"A Stained White Radiance," published in 1992, is fifth in James Lee Burke's increasingly popular Dave Robicheaux series. It bears some family resemblance to the others, particularly in Burke's remarkable ability to make his home country-- New Orleans and its surround, Southern Louisiana-- sing. His descriptions of its landscape, animal, vegetable and mineral, are so deeply felt, that people who have never been closer to New Orleans than Chicago can sense its morning aromas, its approaching storms and nighttime skies.

There are further family resemblances, to be sure. Robicheaux is married to second wife Bootsie, whom he knows, as he does most people in his world, from high school or before. Bootsie suffers from lupus. The detective has quietly, unofficially adopted orphan Alafair; she keeps a three-legged raccoon, called Tripod, as a pet. Robicheaux owns a bait shop that Batist, longtime black family servant, manages. The detective is with the New Iberia police department, as he's been kicked off the New Orleans department. He's still battling his demons: drink, dark memories of Vietnam. His cases generally lead him to the dark side, often to New Orleans, frequently to conflict with the local mafia. When he needs to, he calls upon Clete Purcell, his former partner at NOPD, who's been excommunicated from the department, as he has. Purcell's a heavy, sunburnt, Irish Channel kind of guy, eats too much, smokes and drinks too much, drives an old Cadillac, and lets his anger out to play too frequently. Robicheaux's cases often, as this one, involve present-day outgrowths of hidden, long-ago misdeeds. The family resemblance continues in that the case in this book centers, as so many of the author's do, around the detective's childhood friends, the Cajun Sonnier family, that are ineradicably marked by the harsh abuse they suffered in childhood. The case also centers around the murder of a local cop. When Robicheaux finally clears the murder in his usual fashion, with a high body count, his supervisor will tell him, "I think you wrote your signature on this case with a baseball bat, Dave." Sometimes he does.

However, in this book, Robicheaux is unable to reach the man he really wants to bring down. He muses, " I was guilty of that age-old presumption that the origins of social evil can be traced to villainous individuals, that we just need to identify them, lock them in cages, or even march them to the executioner's wall, and this time, yes, this time, we'll catch a fresh breeze in our sails and set ourselves on a true course." Doesn't mean he doesn't keep trying.

4 out of 5 stars JLB is the 'Bard of the Bayou'.......2006-07-08

Dave is back working as a detective with the New Iberia sheriff's office; living with Bootsie and Alafair, and running his boat rental business. On a routine call, a new officer is killed by two men caught in the middle of a crime. The house where this occurs, is the home of an old friend from his childhood, Weldon Sonnier.

The Sonnier family story is even sorrier than Dave's childhood. Dirt Poor, their mother dies, leaving them to be taken care of by their abusive father's girlfriend. Things get so bad for the kids that at one point they set her on fire. Their father dies in an industrial accident and they spend the rest of their childhood in foster homes and state institutions.

The oldest brother (Weldon) was a flier in 'Nam and then worked for Air America, running drugs and arms to rebels in the mountains of Laos. The younger brother (Lyle) was in 'Nam with Dave, and was a 'tunnel rat' who lost three fingers on his hand. Their sister (Drew) was Dave's girlfriend in college after he got back from 'Nam, as he was on the rebound from Bootsie.

Now Weldon is a rich, successful oilman; Lyle is a born again preacher; and Drew is messed up. Weldon's brother-in-law (his wife is a pill addict) is a racist politician (Bobby Earl) in the manner of David Dukes), mixed up with the aryan brotherhood. One of Earl's biggest backers is the local drug don.

Weldon has gotten involved with Earl's friends who need a man who knows how to fly under the radar (literally). But on a job (that he was pre-paid) for, Weldon gets a conscience and dumps the cargo. Needless to say, his ex-employers are not happy. To add a little extra grusomeness, there is a psychopath midget, and a man with a burned face that looks like melted rubber.

Everything else that happens is related to the murder of the cop and the appearance of the 'burned man'. The action is sometimes a little too bloody, but it's hard to put the story down. The denoument is almost funny (in a non-haha way), and the epilogue sounds like the end of a Jerry Springer show.

More than anything, JLB writing about Dave's relationships with Bootsie, Alafair, Baptiste, and Cletus continue to mature.

4 out of 5 stars Richer hues, more texture..........2005-09-15

James Lee Burke has given us another strong effort in his fifth Dave Robicheaux mystery, A Stained White Radiance.

Book five opens with someone shooting a rifle through a window of Weldon Sonnier's house. The Sonnier children (Weldon, Lyle and Drew) were friends of Robicheaux's growing up in New Iberia. Unfortunately, they suffered a horrendous childhood at the hands of their father. It is obvious that Weldon is hiding something and that his life is in danger. A few days later, three men break into Weldon's house and trash the place. When Robicheaux arrives as backup at the scene, he discovers the body of a fellow police officer who was first sent to investigate. He was executed mob-style. Robicheaux now applies a full court press to identify the murderers, discover who is behind then, and also, reveal what dark secrets the Sonnier's are hiding. Burke also has to deal with some issues at home including a sick wife (lupus) who is jealous of an old flame. We also see Robicheaux more in an AA setting. Although he remains on the wagon, we see him work the program more than in previous books.

A Stained White Radiance touches on the "usual" southern Louisiana maladies including drug dealing. But Burke also shows the ugly side of Louisiana that often includes not on the mob, but also rednecks, Nazi's and Aryans. One character, Bobby Earl, is a former Klansman now running for state office (think David Duke). He operates on the fringe, getting others to do his dirty work. Somehow, these guys are all in bed together.

Burke has always been a fine writer, but he really tightened things up since the first books in this series. The plots are less predictable and more enjoyable. The good guys don't always win and the bad guys don't always lose (which often happens in the real world). Burke's character development has also evolved, and they become more complex and are written in more varied hues. These changes have provided his readers with a richer texture.

In each book, Robicheaux always seems to get into a life-threatening scrape. Despite the danger of his job, I hope Burke keeps Robicheaux alive and working for many books to come.

2 out of 5 stars Believe the two stars reviews.......2005-08-09

Skip this one, really. Don't even bother. Go for the "Confederates" if you are looking for a first or second dip.

I'm giving two stars only because there are a few brilliant one-liners here and there. But you won't find a real plot or anything to keep you awake on this one.

Just plain boring.

3 out of 5 stars Good hard sf ideas rather let down by execution.......2002-01-24

The 'strange artifacts left behind by vanished races' theme has been quite a staple of hard sf writing. The problem is the difficulty of providing a satisfactory explanation of the aliens and their motives for doing whatever it was they did. That's the problem with this book. The trappings of hard sf are well done, but the story (this is actually two books in one, the first two parts of a four-book series) does not build up to a real climax. To be fair, it could be argued that at this point we are only halfway through the full story - but I think that each individual part of any series, that is published as a book by itself, ought to stand on its own.

The descriptive part of the narrative - the science, the alien artifacts - are well done. In my view, the book is let down by two weaknesses, wooden characters and the pace of the narration. None of the characters really stick in your mind; they all seem to be rather two-dimensional and ordinary. In this regard I suppose the comparison to Arthur C. Clarke is quite valid :-) Where the author falls behind in comparison with great books employing the same setting is primarily in the pace of events. Things start off slowly, seem to get even slower in the middle, and only towards the end does the pace really pick up. This may be OK for some people, but not for me.

I don't mean to give a completely negative impression here. The book is not bad, in fact it is among the better ones of its kind. Maybe my expectations were set a bit high, after having read some of the author's shorter work first. Read it, if you can borrow it. Then compare with "Ringworld" (Niven)and "Rendezvous with Rama" (Clarke).

2 out of 5 stars Good setup, but the ending disappoints.......2001-08-23

(The Ingram reviewer must have read only the first couple pages of the book! The "Paradox" artifact pays essentially no role in the story.)

The hard thing about the "mysterious alien artifacts" theme is that if you've done the setup well the reader is wildly curious about the aliens and what astounding purposes their artifacts must have had, and doing a good ending is extremely challenging. It's hard to make the actual explanation as mind-bending and transcendant as the reader wants it, needs it, to be. The novels in "Convergent Series" are, unfortunately, an example of how the actual explanation of the enigma can disappoint.

Without giving the ending away entirely, it turns out that the aliens are basically pretty dumb. Their entire civilization was traumatized by one of those pseudo-profound questions that first year Philosophy students dissect endlessly in the pub, but that in fact evaporate under serious consideration. Their approach to working on the problem is utterly silly and implausible, and serves mainly as a plot device to get the characters to where they need to be for the next scene.

The book is certainly fodder for airplane reading if you have nothing else to hand. But there are lots better things out there...

                    4 out of 5 stars Interesting........2000-07-07

Convergent Series is diffinenty a thinking man's book. Sheffield writes an amazing trip through the mind, and creates a new level for human thought to expand into.

                    4 out of 5 stars Tom.......2000-07-06

Strong on science, concept, and plot. The name caught me, and the book didn't disappoint. Sheffield bridges the gap between space opera and hard sci-fi with an excellent grasp of drama, humor and "wow".

Larry Niven, Convergent Series (Del Rey, 1979)

Convergent Series is half previously published material and half new material written for this book, including five new Draco's Tavern tales and some new Known Universe stuff. (Some of the previously published stuff is proto-Known Universe material, as well.) If you're a Larry Niven fan, you know what that means. If you aren't, what it means is that this is a pretty good place to get to know Larry Niven.

There is (as there is in most science fiction; about 90% of this collection is solidly in the sci-fi vein, while a story or two is more in the straight mystery genre) a little of the annoying "this was put in just to make this sound like a science fiction story" claptrap here, but it's kept to a bare minimum, and Niven allows the stories to be carried by the characters and the plots within, rather than relying on gadgetry and technology to do the work for him. As such, Niven's science fiction is more accessible than a good deal of the hard stuff, and he's easily as readable as, say, Greg Bear. If you've not managed to glom onto Niven yet, thirty-five years into his career, this collection is a fine way to start. ***

3 out of 5 stars Clever, thought-provoking, but not really all that good.......2001-05-05

Larry Niven's Convergent Series is a pleasant little collection of 21 stories ranging from science fiction and fantasy to almost everyday stories of Los Angeles. Aside from the handful of "short shorts" involving the chirpsithtra, Niven's yarn-spinning aliens, these stories have no real connection to any of his other works. Generally, the long stories are the more satisfying, as with the space mutiny in "One Face", and especially the hard-nosed Private Investigator fiction of "The Meddler" (which features perhaps the most memorable character in a book weak on characterization), while the shorter works such as "Mistake" and "Convergent Series" come off as, at most, clever. Perhaps the best stories are those that deal with the complexities of time travel, where Niven lets his logical gifts wrestle with the standard paradoxes of cause and effect with interesting, and for once almost believable, results. Sadly, the short story format leaves little or no room for what is surely Niven's greatest strength - constructing vast new worlds, new races, and new social orders populated with unusal beings that stay with us long after the book is finished. Instead, we see Niven trying out different kinds of stories, with varying results. Fans of Niven's work will find that some of these stories are wryly amusing, others are seriously thought-provoking, and others are perhaps overly precious. Despite its breadth, however, this collection is not strong enough overall to serve as a good introduction to Niven's work because the individual stories themselves aren't that great. If you aren't already a fan of Niven's "hard" science fiction, start off with one of his fine novels instead of this book of second rate stories.

Diana G. Gallagher really does know how to write brilliant Alex Mack stories. A wonderful storyline with a beautiful photo of Larisa on the front cover if I may say so. Amnesia is the last thing that Alex needs with supernatural powers, she could morph anywhere in public, zap people accidently. To find out whether she recovers from amnesia, you'll have to read it yourselves which I recommend you do. Diana, keep up the good work.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Alex Who??????.......1998-02-17

For Alex Mack and her friends, going to a rennaissance fair is a cool way to learn about the middle ages without even cracking a book. It's like stepping into the days of knights, and lords, and ladies. And Alex, for once, could use a knight in shining armor. Separated from her friends, she gets whacked in the head with a stray leather ball, and it knocks her out cold. When she wakes up, Alex has completely lost her memory! It doesn't take her long to realize she has some really awesome powers. But she also senses they've put her in real danger. She knows someone is after her. But without her memory, how can she know who's an enemy, and who's a friend?

3 out of 5 stars Good Book But Not As Good As The Others.......1997-05-06

This book was okay but I expected much more from the author. I thought that the storyline was not much like the show. I think that Alex having Ammensia is a little far fetched so I think that they need to come up with some new ideas for Alex Mack stories

I just got the book today it has tons of recipes I am just disappointed that there are no pictures in the book. The recipes are great reminding me back to the day of childhood. But I found many other Jewish cook books with these same recipes in them at cheaper price with pictures! Look around for other Jewish cookbooks on amazon. You will find a few. Unfortunately I did that after I bought this expensive book when I found out this has not 1 picture in it. This Cookbook is expensive and for the price it should at least have pictures. I rate it 3 stars but I accidentally hit the 4 star rating.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Big Collection of Published Recipes. Nothing Else.......2004-01-05

The best and worst thing one can say about this book is that it is just a very large collection of ancient and modern recipes whose ingredients and preparation conform to at least conservative Jewish dietary laws. It is very similar to a collection of all English Language published sonnets ranging from Shakespeare to the little old lady in Nebraska who publishes in her local newspaper. Everything has been published and everything follows certain rules, but all connections between the collected items ends there.

This is not an unworthy book. It sort of reminds me of the old Palgraveýs Golden Treasury of English Poetry, which collected works according to little rhyme or reason, except that the authors were English and wrote in English.

This book has three things going for it.

First is its size. With 825 recipes, someone looking for a recipe to accomplish a particular objective within the kosher rules, they have a good chance of finding one.

Second is the fact that all recipes have been published, but not all have been published in the pages of the New York Times. Some come from recently published books such as Marcus Samuelsonýs ýAquavitý. This means that each one has been editorially reviewed by one or more of professional editorial eyes.

Third is the obvious love and care with which the editor(s) have assembled the material. The introductory essays by Mimi Sheraton and Joan Nathan are informative and endearing.

Unfortunately, all sense of cohesiveness stops on the first page of Appetizer recipes. There is no trace of any scholarship which would help sort out the recipes by whether the originating tradition was, for example Ashkanazy or Sephardic.

The Chapters dividing the recipes are:

                                    Appetizers
                                    Soups
                                    Fish
                                    Poultry
                                    Meat
                                    Vegetables
                                    Grains, Legumes, and Pasta
                                    Salads
Light Fare for Brunch and Lunch
                                    Trimmings, Savory and Sweet
                                    Breads, Rolls, Bagels, and Matzohs
                                    Desserts

There is no sense in which Jewish traditional food forms a cuisine in the same sense that Morocco or Turkey or Iran have a distinctive cuisine. Jewish food is an overlay on the existing cuisine of the region.

This is a very worthy book if you have few cookbooks and are in need of a more diverse selection of kosher recipes. It is interesting that there is no statement in the book saying that the validity of the kosher nature of the recipes has not been certified by any rabbinical authority. And note that a kosher recipe can easily be made non-kosher by using non-kosher ingredients. A reasonable price for a lot of recipes. If you want a more measured look at Jewish Cooking, check out Claudia Roden's book on the subject and her book on Middle Eastern food.

4 out of 5 stars vicarious weight gain.......2003-09-07

I put on 8 lbs. just reading one chapter. Like most endeavors of the NYT, it is both authoritative and encyclopedic in scope. While it sticks maily to traditional Kosher and Jewish dishes, it shows some respect for Israeli cooking, usually given short shrift in "American Kosher" cookbooks.

It's failure, however, is one of overload, both in many of the recipies themselves, and in the number of inclusions. It gives insufficient weight to weight itself!! With so many of its readers and users in the constant battle of the waistline (and tushline), it provides little encouragement to minimalists and moderationists (new word, coined this morning).
