3 out of 5 stars tangled yarn.......2007-10-09

I read Sefton's first book , then jumped to the third, which was a mistake. In the course of writing, Sefton lets the protaganist progress with her life, which should happen, but if you havent read the first two books, you are out in left field. In this book, Kelly finally decides to stay in FT Collins.
The writing is good, the yarn shop has little to do with the murders, and more to do with Kelly's personal life. I find a distraction with keeping track of all the characters, but there is good sleuthing, for a cozy mystery, which I love.

3 out of 5 stars Kelly & friends need to find a killer..........2007-10-05

Once again we get to join Kelly Flynn and her friends in Ft. Connor, Colorado and frequent The House of Lambspun. Allison Dubois has finally gotten some recognition for her wearable art and will be starting an internship with Sophia Emeraud in her New York studio. Kelley and Megan Schmidt attend a gallery showing of Allison's work and help her get ready to move to New York. But when they arrive to take Allison to the airport they are shocked to find her dead. The police are ready to rule it a suicide but Kelley, Megan, and others who knew Allison suspect foul play. Kelley once again uses her accountant-honed attention to detail and minutiae to uncover some clues that may lead the police to reconsider their decision.

This book continues several of the background threads begun in book one and carried along. Will Kelley find a way to stay in Ft. Connor rather than return to her high-pressure job in Washington, DC? Will Kelley drop her defenses a bit and admit that Steve is more than just a friend? The detail and background gets richer with each book as characters are added and then continuing characters gain more depth and texture. It becomes an ideal setting that is very satisfying for a reader to drop into and visit for a time -- somewhere where there are the close knit communities of friendships that most of us crave in our busy lives.

Having read all the books in the series, I'm finding that with each book the writing gets tighter and the central mystery gains in complexity. This series keeps improving along with the knitting skills of Kelly Flynn -- who has now mastered circular needles. The book contains a pattern for a Lambspun Easy Triangle Shawl, recipes for Chiles Rellenos Con Queso (Chile Peppers stuffed with Cheese), Rellenos de Chiles verde, and Baked Chiles Rellenos.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Cozy Mixes Sleuthing, Knitting, and Rocky Mountain Scenery.......2007-07-30

"A Deadly Yarn" is the third story in Maggie Sefton's series of knitting mysteries, featuring Kelly Flynn, accountant, new knitter, and recent transplant to the mythical town of Fort Connor, Colorado. In this installment, Kelly and Megan (one of Kelly's friends from the Lambspun knitting shop) stumble upon the dead body of another friend, Allison Dubois, who is a budding fiber artist. Kelly and Megan find Allison's dead body in her apartment, when they stop by in order to take Allison to the airport to fly to New York City to begin her dream job with a major designer. At first, the police attribute Allison's death to suicide by means of a drug overdose of sleeping pills, but Kelly and Megan are convinced that foul play is involved. So amatuer sleuth Kelly starts looking for clues to convince the Fort Connor police that Allison's death is murder, not suicide.

The overall atmosphere of this book is very cozy, with lots of picnics and barbecues with Kelly and her new Fort Connor friends. Kelly's possible romance with hunky builder Steve continues to simmer on the back burner. Also, Kelly continues to struggle with a decision to continue telecommuting for her old job with a major accounting firm in Washington D.C,. or to take the plunge to go into business for herself as an accounting consultant.

All in all, this was a very enjoyable read. I do recommend, though, that readers who have not read the previous books in the series ("Knit One, Kill Two" and "Needled to Death") read those first in order to get a handle on the large number of characters in the stories. The main reason I gave this book only four stars was that it was way too easy to figure out the identity of Allison's murderer. Still, the mystery part was enjoyable, seeing how Kelly managed to prove the murderer's guilt to the police.

3 out of 5 stars Cozy but Stilted.......2007-07-08

I've gotten hooked on the cast of characters and their easy comradery. However, after reading 3 of them, the series is getting a little formulaic and predictable. The conversations seem stilted and people explain things over and over again. And the mysteries just aren't. Too much is explained and the conclusion becomes very obvious long before the end of the book, and not just to the reader but to the main character, too. In the end, it's all a big let down.

5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2007-04-04

I love this series. She just can't write them fast enough for me. They are a quick read, plus each one has a pattern to knit and a recipe. Can't ask for more than that!

Book Description

Master magician Blais was dead, murdered by the evil ice-lord Nimir. Now there was only Tristan, an ill-trained apprentice, to carry on the quest to rescue Allaire, a princess held in enchanted sleep in Nimir's frozen halls. Though a thousand master mages had already failed in the quest, Tristan must succeed -- or all of Calandra would be doomed by Nimir's greed.

First Tristan would have to find the wonder-horse Valadan, who had vanished long ago. Then he had to secure the aid of the one knight among many who was a true Heir to the Throne. Together, they must overcome the Guardian dragon of Nimir's realm.

After that -- well, there was still the tenth ring to be found, since Allaire was powerless without it.

Nothing, of course, was ever that simple. There were complications . . .

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of a Wonderful Trilogy!.......2003-10-30

With master magician Blais dead, murdered by the evil wizard Nimir, bumbling apprentice Tristan was all that was left to carry on Blais' last quest - to find and awaken the princess of Allaire and thus save all of Calandra, or to fail and doom the kingdom to eternal winter. Tristan felt ill equipped to rescue the princess, especially after hundreds of heroes and wizards, all better trained than he, had died in the attempt. But Tristan loved his master too much to do nothing less than his very best so he started with the basics that the others discounted. The first thing that Tristan had to recover was the legendary warhorse of Esdragon, Valadan, who had disappeared long ago. Then he had to persuade the Heir to the Throne, Polassar, that his was not a fool's errand, but a true chance at victory to save the kingdom. After he had gathered his companions, then Tristan had to find the location of the sleeping princess, somehow awaken her, find the tenth ring that was needed for the princess to use her powers, fight off jealous wizards, Nimir's Ice Hounds, and whatever other complications came along the way....

The Ring of Allaire is in many ways a simple fantasy tale retold, but in other ways it is new, fresh and fun. There are also plenty of little surprises to keep the reader guessing, even though some things seem obvious to the reader before it is revealed in the book. But, Dexter's characters are delightful and so fun to get to know and to travel with. I love that Tristan tries really hard and sometimes succeeds and sometimes doesn't, but he always tries. He seems like such a normal person and it is refreshing for the nice, normal guy to get ahead for once, instead of the brave, dashing hero. A fast, fun read that kicks of a delightful trilogy - I highly recommend all of Dexter's books!

4 out of 5 stars well worth a read.......2002-04-07

This book's a charming story. True, it uses nearly all the cliches of the genre (talking cat and horse, imprisoned princess, inexpert wizard's apprentice, etc.), yet Dexter crafts her characters with evident love and nuance that make the book extremely readable and a lot of fun. The relationships ring true as well. I heartily recommend it and the rest of the trilogy as a wonderful entrance or return to enchanting, lighthearted, elegant yet earnest adventure.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this great book, it is now one of my favorites........1998-12-20

This is an exciting and adventurous book. I was able to figure out what would happen ahead of time on a few things, but the ending totally blew me away! It had everything from Dragonslaying to romance, and rescuing. This book deserves 5 stars, because it was written so well by Susan Dexter. I applaud her!!!

5 out of 5 stars This one is just the beginning of a great trilogy!.......1998-10-31

This fun and original story starts out the traditional way, with a quest--the wizard apprentice and a big brawny warrior set out to rescue an enchanted princess.

The ultimate evil has created a prophecy saying the princess needs three things to be rescued--a wizard, the true heir to the throne, and the immortal, warhorse, Valadan. For hundreds of years, wizards and heirs have set out on this fruitless quest, dying and draining the land of Caladan of all its wise leaders.

When his master is killed, young, bumbling apprentice, Tristan, sets out to fulfill the quest, and he acquires the one thing that the others discounted--the fabulous lost warhorse. With Polassar, a conceited warrior of noble blood and Valadan, he sets out To rescue Allaire. But the quest is just the beginning and neither the quest nor the characters turn out to be just what they seemed to be. I can't say much more without giving the twist away.

Oh, and one more thing for you animal lovers out there, Thomas, Tristan's familiar, is one of the most sarcastic cats you will ever come across. If cats aren't your style, there is Minstrel the brave canary, and of course, there is immortal Valadan, sired by the wind itself, the magical mysterious and wise warhorse.

This is the start to one of those rare series where the books just get better and the final book, The Mountains of Channadran is one of my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Unclassically Original.......1998-08-13

Intelligent, humorous and beautiful. Allaire, the beautiful ruler-to-be, is sought by all. But once freed from her enchanted sleep the WinterWastes, the story by far doesn't end there!

Tristan, the wizard's appentice that freed her after the death of his mentor, master, and foster-parent Blaise, is both main character and co-comedy relief. He, like the big burly Polassar who accompanies him on his... no, on THE Quest, vies for the stunningly beautiful Allaire, but she will have no part of him, save servant. She's not rude, just unnoticing.

Elisena is the true surprise of the story. Her joined involvement with the group shows plainly how shallow the fair Allaire truely is. Elisena's healing knowledge and power makes her invaluble, yet her bloodline worries our Polassar.

Is she(Elisena) indeed a changeling? Not to be trusted, though she has more than proven herself? Or merely another mortal, like themselves... another useful road servant for the trav! el-weary Allaire?

The goal of this report is to assist managers in gauging a company's financial performance vis-a-vis firms competing in the same sector, at the global level. In particular, this report covers ALLAIRE CORP., USA. With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's performance against other firms on a worldwide basis. Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector. Second, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs to use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full financial benchmarks vis-a-vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover assets, liabilities, income and ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the statistics reported are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 reports are produced each year). Each report provides over 100 statistics and 40 graphs to the reader.

                  Book Description

In his first novel, Thoughts of God, Michael Kanaly created a metaphysical saga of murder that moved from the mean streets of modern-day America to the very notebook of God - in which earthly justice meets cosmic vengeance. Now this stunningly original writer once again probes the farthest reaches of the universe-and the human experience. It is the story of a research scientist on the verge of an extraordinary discovery: certain viruses are no longer acting in a random way. In fact, they seem to be intelligently planning where and how to multiply. And intertwined in this powerful drama is the story of the virus clans themselves, spanning millions of years as they evolve and make their own extraordinary discovery: to be the perfect hosts, human beings will have to be changed.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The "Truth" Behind Evolution.......2004-07-15

What is human evolution? What is evolution in general? These are some of the questions addressed in VIRUS CLANS by Michael Kanaly. This novel takes on the very scary concept of intent within viruses.

In this contemporary novel we meet a research scientist working at the ground floor on a project to create a protein-reading computer. The project has great potential for fame once successes are made. But during an early experiment a startling discovery is made; viruses pass small proteins back and forth. What is the purpose of these proteins? Is it some primitive form of communication? Some lateral thinking on the part of the researcher prompts more tests while early news of the protein passing gets squashed by the government. It seems that the CDC feels this is a National Security Issue. But great minds are not known for giving up.

With a small, basement setup, the researcher continues his work. After weeks and major erosion on the marriage front, a small portion of a passed protein is read. What does it mean? He needs the resources of the full lab to find out. When the check is made it is discovered to be the same as a sequence found in the human frontal lobe. More questions are asked and more conclusions reached. Viruses are changing people. What is being changed? Unknown, at this point. But then another cover-up is leaked. Segments of the medical community have noticed growing numbers of a strange madness that seems to have no physical cause.

How may proteins exchanged by viruses and a new form of madness related? The answer is revealed in a manner that is both hopeful and horrifying at the same time. In VIRUS CLANS, Michael Kenaly utilizes the uncertainties in the science of evolution to spin a yarn that is gripping horrifyingly cohesive. The concepts put forth in this novel, and their consequences, are both scary and comforting. Some readers will probably disagree on the comfort angle but in my own personal feelings I do find some of the book comforting. If you like fairly hard science fiction cast more in shadow than in light, then you will probably enjoy this book.

1 out of 5 stars Is it really Science Fiction?.......1999-09-09

There is science,a rigorous discepline which has brought us antibiotics, computers, and an average lifespan beyound 45 years. There is pseudoscience, which has brought us pyramid power, ear candles, and amaranth enemas. This book is pseudoscience fiction. The author is not merely ignorant of the basics of virology, computer science, biochemistry, genetics, and electronmicroscopy. Ignorance is a passive state-the absence of knowledge. The author has gone pro-active.He is aggressively uninformed on those topics, and I suspect he must have expended considerable effort to remain uninformed. Making up the false science he used in his book must have been more work than learning a bit of real science. As for the supposedely shockingly original ideas in this book: most of them were used on Dr. Who back in the 1970's. A sentient virus, human evolution controlled for some alien's convience, infectious insanity- these are all old hat.The author has given us a book with bad science, shopworn ideas, and shallow and unrealistic characters. If you like that kind of stuff you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars An explosive read!.......1999-08-06

Kanaly's venture into the world of Big Ideas continues in this follow-up book to his impressive first novel, THOUGHTS OF GOD. In GOD, the author takes you on a journey through the cosmos, into the twisted heart of Man, and the provocative mind of God. In VIRUS CLANS, the journey is reversed, as the story deals with the smallest parts of life, the lowly virus, and its impact on evolution, both on Earth and in the Universe. Kanaly stretches the boundaries of respectable science, and in so doing stretches the boundaries of the reader's imagination. Bring your brain to this one, you'll have to think. But as in THOUGHTS OF GOD, the intensity, the insights, the expansive scope of the story makes it well worthwhile. A startlingly good book.

I loved "Fit For Life, and now reading the "New Way Of Eating From The Fit For Life Kitchen"...Lots more information on perfectly combining and eating...I couldn't put it down...I learned so much more and this is a new way of life for me and I highly recommend this for anyone who is totally serious about learning a new way of life, it is not a diet, it's a way of life that makes you feel so much better and it's so much healthier...

4 out of 5 stars Simple, healthy recipes that taste good.......2002-01-21

I like this cooking book and use it wuite often. It has several sections, and I especially like the one on salads and salad dressings and the one of fruit smoothies. The book can actually be used by people who have not read the Fit for Life books, too, as it contains a summary of the main info on food combining and fruit consumption; while Fit for Life fans will like it as it will bring nice new recipes in their kitchen, while still assuring them they are eating as healthy as possible.

The book contains several sections: fruit smoothies, juices and salads; vegetable salads and many dressings for them: sandwitches (yes, you can have a properly combined sandwicth, and once you had one, you won't want to go back to the old way!); soups; vegetable dishes; feast and buffest dishes.

The recipes are simple to realize even for people who don't have much experience in cooking, and they are realized with readily available items. This book will allow you to cook for your family and know they are eating properly without much effort on your side, and they'll like what you cook!

Particularly recommended for vegetarians! But anyone will like this book.

This book helped me to drop 30 pounds in less than 6 weeks. I feel alive again. I've never felt this good. Not only did I take the weight off, but I also lost my asthma and chronic fatigue. Thank you Marilyn Diamond.

I started food combining to lose weight. Thanks to this book, I have not only lost the excess weight, but my energy level and my blood pressure and cholestrol levels have dropped dramatically, too. But , best of all, I AM NEVER HUNGRY.

I have felt so much better since I have been practicing this way of eating. I have been on it for two weeks now and it is wonderful.
