Doing their best to ensure the future of the genre, St. Martin's Press and the Private Eye Writers of America give out an award every year for the Best First Private Eye Novel. The 1997 winner was this splendidly evocative work by IBM employee Steve Hamilton, which takes just about every cliché in the field and turns it inside out. Yes, Alex McKnight was an athlete in his youth--but a minor league baseball player, not a top pro forced out by injury. And yes, he was a cop in Detroit before he moved up to the town of Paradise on the shores of Lake Superior--but even this overused genre icon is made believable by the details of a particularly bloody shootout. In Paradise, Alex runs a hunting camp built by his late father and only drifts into private investigations because of two friends, a persuasive lawyer and a local millionaire with a gambling problem who needs his help. When two bookmakers are murdered and the millionaire disappears, all the signs point to the psychopath who killed McKnight's partner and left a slug near Alex's heart 14 years before. The only problem is that this man has definitely, positively been in prison ever since. You might figure out the plot twists a page or two before McKnight does, but don't bet the farm on it. And the deep layer of details that Hamilton provides about life in this bleak part of the world add to the book's many pleasures. --Dick Adler

Book Description

Other than the bullet lodged less than a centimeter from his heart, former Detroit police officer Alex McKnight thought he had put the nightmare of his partner's death and his own near-fatal injury behind him-after all, Maximillian Rose, convicted of the crimes, has been locked in the state penitentiary for thirteen years. But in the small town of Paradise, Michigan, where McKnight has traded his badge for a cozy cabin in the woods, a murderer with the unmistakable trademark of Maximillian Rose appears to be back to his killing ways. With Rose locked away, McKnight can't understand who else would know the intimate details of the old murders, described in the threatening notes and phone calls he receives-not to mention the signature blood-red rose left on his doorstep. And it seems like it'll be a frozen day in hell before McKnight can unravel the cold truth from a deadly deception in a town that's anything but Paradise.AUTHORBIO: STEVE HAMILTON, born and raised in Michigan, now works for IBM is upstate New York, where he lives with his wife and son.A COLD DAY IN PARADISE is the winner of the 1997 St. Martin's Press/Private Eye Writers of America Best First P.I. Novel contest.Hamilton is now at work on his next Alex McKnight mystery.

1 out of 5 stars Not enough U. P. and to much forced anger..........2007-09-08

Being from the U.P. it is always a pleasure to stumble across a book with ties to my home. However, this was not the case with "A Cold Day in Paradise." This story could have taken place anywhere. The U. P. is a unique location that could have had more significance to the story or its characters. I was also disappointed in the continuous anger of each of the characters. As a reader I did not feel I was given enough information or background to understand or believe where this anger was coming from. As one previous review stated the characters seemed "flat." I would agree with this and in being more specific I would add it is more enjoyable and believable to watch a character moving into a state of anger, possibly struggling with it internally ... these characters were simply flat angry all the time.

4 out of 5 stars An ex-Catcher ex-Detroit Cop in the UP of Michigan.......2007-07-17

Alex McKnight is a well drawn character who, by the end of the book, you feel you really get to know. Hamilton spends a good amount of time having him ruminate about his life without making it sound like a soliloquy from a Shakesperian play. He has had an interesting life so far, minor league catcher (couldn't hit a curve ball) then Detroit Cop (on 3/4 pension after being shot three times by a maniac who killed his partner). Now he's trying to make a living running a hunting camp in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Suddenly one day it appears that the man who shot him, and is doing life plus 12 years in a maximum security penitentiary (from which no one has ever escaped) is leaving him typewritten letters. The story then unfolds featuring the lawyer who got him to get his PI license, a wimpy rich guy, his wife (who he had an affair with), the rich guys mother, the chief of the Sault Ste. Marie (Soo) Police, a State Detective and a bunch of card players at his local bar.

The story is interesting and the ending has a Ian Rankin/John Rebus feel to it. Nothing is completely rapped up but Alex has the knowledge that he has been able to bury some of his demons, while donating some of them to some one who deserves them more.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-30

My main problem with this book is that the characters weren't real to me. I found the Chief's attitude toward Alex unbelievable; the Chief was mad at Alex no matter what he did. I know a novel needs conflict, but so much between those two characters was manufactured. At one point, a deputy tells Alex that the Chief wants him arrested him on sight. Arrested for what? Cooperation? Also, the fact that a grown man (Edwin) needed a "babysitter" didn't work for me at all. The way Edwin's mother behaved was more in line with the way she'd deal with a 12-year old. Based on some of the other reviews - that Hamilton gets better with each new book - I might try one more of his later ones. Those of you who gave this book five stars would LOVE Michael Connelly, Jeffery Deaver or Linda Lippman.

5 out of 5 stars a Yooper exravaganza.......2006-11-02

After my Wife and Neighbors kept pushing me to read the Hamilton novels I finally relented. What a surprise. I greatly enjoyed the fact of based in Michigan and the upper as we call it brightened the story. The suspense and conclusion were excellent. I greatly reccomend this novel.

4 out of 5 stars My first Alex McKnight Mystery..........2006-11-02

...won't be my last.I know this is Hamilton's first in the series, but I just "found" him,and really enjoyed it. His description of the upper penninsula of Michigan, the cold/snow/wind off the lake....I felt the cold reading it.Alex, losing his former partner, him badly wounded, you really felt for him.A good who-dun-it,with the twists and turns of a good mystery.I look forward to reading more of Alex McKnight!!!

4 out of 5 stars More than pimps and dealers..........2003-03-20

I picked up CB: FoS to help round out a character I was playing in a Vampire LARP, in large part because I had never actually tried to play a real Settite before. All clans are hobbled by excessive stereotyping, but the infrequency of the minor clans and bloodlines makes such stereotypes even more difficult to break out of successfully. The Clanbook helps bust through the "traditional" view of the Followers of Set, barely even mentioning the base pandering that most people would associate with the Clan.

The Revised V:tM books as a whole are a major improvement over the stumbling in first and second edition, and this clanbook is no exception. An updated Path, while less strenuous in it's hierarchy of sins than some, gives much more character to the Followers of Set, while a review of history and pre-history of the world through the eyes of the cult provides a depth that suits so ancient a following.

The updating of the dogma of the Followers of Set does a great job of transforming them from a group of fundamentalists into a vital if dark religion. The style of writing also keeps the message fluid enough that one finds it hard to get locked in to a single interpretation of the message of the Followers of Set, empahiszing once again that their faith is one to be experienced, not simply one of words.

What I would have liked to see more of:
examples of the founding of a temple
more on akhu and specific ritualistic practices

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Revision.......2002-11-11

Lets face it. The previous clan books were pretty [bad], so the Revised clan books have a lot to make up for. Well this one certainly does an excellent job of making the Followers of Set actually playable. After you read this book, you will actually be able to incorporate Setites into your games without disrupting it.
The opening fiction gives us plenty of hints that what we think about them might not be so accurate after all. And then we get the kicker. The first chapter about history is written by a skeptical Setite! Theres a heavy focus on Egypt, and it looks like the authors really did some homework here. It starts off in pre-dynastic times, with the conflict between Osiris and Set and continues throughout dynastic Egypt into the Persian invasion and Alexander's liberation of Egypt. From then on, we get some stuff on Carthage, Cleopatra, Roman north Africa, the Coptic period and Set's disappearence. Byzantine and Muslim Egypt, along with the Crusades in the Holy Land, are then explored, with lots of juicy little tidbits. It goes on to the Ottoman era and the slow spread into Europe (the "Dark Continent"). We finally get into the modern era, along with some hints at non-Egyptian Setites! And then we are left with a disturbing ending.
The next chapter is the meat, explaining the role of the Setites, Egyptian mythology and the Pah of Typhon-Set. We learn that the Setites are not base corrupters, but religious fanatics, servants of a dark and terrible god who offers freedom and scholars who seek to preserve forbidden lore. Definately a better motivation than undead pimps and drug lords. We get some hints for "Playing a God", a revision of the Path of Typhon (and the new Path of Sutekh), cult structure and some sample temples (mainly in northern Africa). Aside from the stereotypes of other clans and supernaturals, we also get to learn that the Setites are indeed not exclusively Egyptian. Aside from the orthodox cults, other ones exist, drawing from other cultures. We learn of the Norse Setites who revere the great serpent, the African Children of Damballah, the Sabbat's Serpents of Light who follow Voodoo and Santeria, the Shaivite Daitya of India and the Tlacique, ancient Aztec, Mayan and Incan vampires who now challenge the Sabbat.
The chapter closes out with some mechanical stuff. New knowledge called Setite Lore, which draws upon the forbidden lore from ancient Egypt, and some new discipline powers. We get higher level Serpentis powers, along with some Obfuscate, Presence and multi-discipline powers. Plus we finally get a look at the hoary magics of ancient Egypt. The Setites can boast blood magicians just as potent as the Tremere. And not only are there Egyptian blood magics, but also Hindu magics of the Daitya, voodoo and santeria magics from Serpents of Light and the sacrificial magics of Mesoamerica used by the Tlacique.
And of course, it closes out with the standard character templates, signature characters and a Setite specific character sheets. Surprisingly, the character templates are all pretty unique and original, a rarity for a clan book. Things like prophetic artist, business man who sells cheap Egyptian-style art, psychology, techno-mystic and gladiator. Plus we get the non-standard ones: Native rights activist Tlacique, voodoo queen Serpent of Light and debunking scientist Daitya. Pretty cool actually. The signature characters include a brood of Setites who repair other's reputations, as well as the signature character Hesha Ruhadze. More interesting, for me anyway, was the Daitya "devil-Brahmin" Sundervere. From what I've been told, he's going to become a major signature character in the upcoming Victorian Era Vampire. Regardless, hes a cool character.
Check out this book if you want to make Setites with any real depth to them. Its an excellent clan book, and well worth the buy. Afterwards, you will actually be able to run them in your chronicles. The section on Egyptian history was extremely well written, even without the Setites, plus the new non-western bloodlines like the Children of Damballah, Daita and Tlacique were all neat additions too. Check out Blood Sacrifice for more on non-western blood magicians (especially Setites).

                    5 out of 5 stars A more comprehesive veiw.......2001-06-22

All I can say is way better than the origial Clan Book. This book gives a much better telling of the tenits of the Followers of Set, and a telling of there history, from a realist of the clan. It also for me answered the questions like why do the other cainites put up with the snakes. It plays more on the keeping of "dark secrets" than the first book did, takes a stance of knowlege can bring coruption, and not all favors are payable to the giver.

I think this is good resource if you are a Story Teller, or a player intresed in running a snake, this book realy helped me get what they are all about. It also makes the snakes more playable in any game (MET or Table Top).

4 out of 5 stars Finally depth is added to this clan........2001-04-19

This book is a cultural and historical study of one of the darkest of clans. The focus is one the culture and the mindset of the "snakes." This book discards the worn out stereotype of "Servants of Set" and gives them more depth. They are still his servants, but the are more... main stream. They still have thier dark goals, but they are protrayed with more human motivations. They are seen as religious, not mindless fanatical worshipers who cant think about anything beyond Set and snakes. Set colors everything they do, but he no longer appears to dictate everything that they do. If you read the clan novel, you will see that this clan book better describes Hesha, the previous work made it hard for me to imagine how a clan of fanatics could create such subtle schemeing sellers of secrets. This work paints a picture that makes it clear.

The down side is that the list of disciplines is weak.

If there ever was a pair of docs who can make the small intestine seem truly intriguing, here they are. Dr. Mehmet Oz is an alternative-medicine maverick and a cardiologist known to implement acupuncture during open-heart surgery. Dr. Michael Roizen developed the RealAge concept of calculating one's biological, as opposed to chronological, age. Here they've whipped up a witty guide to the workings of the entire body, appropriate not just for those who can't tell their pancreas from their pituitary. Even Cheers' Cliff Claven types who think they know it all will likely be humbled by the 50-question "body-quotient" quiz that starts off the book.

With much sassy humor (they describe the adrenals as similar in shape to Mr. Potato Head's hat), they give a guided tour of the body's anatomy and major systems (hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory, etc.) including plenty of fascinating trivia along the way. How often should you get your thyroid level checked? How much gas does the average person produce in a day? And, most important, how many times a year do most people have sex?? Drs. Oz and Roizen know. They also reveal plenty of bizarre (and potentially life-saving) facts such as this: If your earlobe has a prominent vertical wrinkle, it's likely that your arteries are aging faster than they ought to be. If only 8th-grade health class had been this fun.

The docs' main goal in presenting all this info is twofold: first, it's your body, so shouldn't you finally learn how it works? And, second, they want to help teach ways of preserving the body's health and youthfulness. To that end, they've included an "Owner's Manual Diet," a 10-day menu plan designed not for weight loss, but to make you feel "years younger." Its simple recipes are each meant to benefit a certain body system, such as Tomato Bruschetta, packed with the antioxidant lycopene, which has been proven to boost immunity. --Erica Jorgensen

                    Book Description

Between your full-length mirror and high-school biology class, you probably think you know a lot about the human body. While it's true that we live in an age when we're as obsessed with our bodies as we are with celebrity hairstyles, the reality is that most of us know very little about what chugs, churns, and thumps throughout this miraculous, scientific, and artistic system of anatomy. Yes, you've owned your skin-covered shell for decades, but you probably know more about your cell-phone plan than you do about your own body. When it comes to your longevity and quality of life, understanding your internal systems gives you the power, authority, and ability to live a healthier, younger, and better life.

You: The Owner's Manual challenges your preconceived notions about how the human body works and ages, then takes you on a tour through all of the highways, back roads, and landmarks inside of you. After taking a quiz that tests your body of knowledge, you'll learn about all of your blood-pumping, food-digesting, and keys-remembering systems and organs.

Just as important, you'll get the facts and advice you need to keep your body running long and strong. You'll find out how diseases start and how they affect your body -- as well as advice on how to prevent and beat conditions that threaten your quality of life. Complete with exercise tips, nutritional guidelines, simple lifestyle changes, and alternative approaches, You: The Owner's Manual gives you an easy, comprehensive, and life-changing how-to plan for fending off the gremlins of aging. To top it off, you'll also get the great-tasting and calorie-saving Owner's Manual Diet -- a thirty-recipe eating plan that's designed with only one goal in mind: to help you live a younger life.

Welcome to your body. Why don't you come on in and take a look around?

This book is very informative. It takes the human body and breaks it down so anyone can understand it. I have learned a great deal about my body and the abuse I do to it. Would recommend it to anyone and everyone. Oh, and I love the humor too!

Health for dummies. Fun and quick reading. But, before you buy the book. Look through the 50 question quiz. If you are interested in the questions and were not able to answer them, then go ahead and buy.

Look at the menus at the back of the book. If you are not interested in changing your diet, you might look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Tried to be a little too funny.......2007-10-01

I liked this book, but ended up skipping over a lot of the parts that were supposed to be funny. I would have liked the pictures to be labeled correctly, not with funny made up names for body parts.

Great stuff, easy read. Very informative. I read it and then my Mom read it.

                    5 out of 5 stars Very "YOUseful".......2007-09-28

In short, just a very informative book that is successful in achieving several goals. For one, it educates the reader in the inner workings of the human body. It does this quite entertainingly through trivia, facts, and interesting pictures (for instance the authors use a lot of elves). Additionally, the book also gives you many helpful tips on self-care and how to keep your body running smoother. While there is a lot information, I really would like to have seen a reference section at the end of the book. All in all though, it's a pretty informative and amusing read that should enhance the well-being of many. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for readers who might need more specific info on shoulder pain and rotator cuff self-care.

                              Book Description

From the ninety-three teas on offer to the tempeh turkey club, Teany's mix of delicious vegetarian and vegan cuisine with a mellow atmosphere has made it a hit with the Lower East Side denizens who make it a habit to attend Teany's casual afternoon tea (cucumber sandwiches anyone?). Since opening in 2002, internationally acclaimed musician Moby and his partner Kelly Tisdale have made Teany a home base for all things Moby—a hipster hangout, chic contemporary tea shop, and host to political and charity events.

With Teany Book, Moby and Kelly distill Teany into an idiosyncratic yet functional gift book that will teach the art of making Teany's special lavender iced tea and creating nosh-worthy vegan lunches that even carnivores will enjoy, while also functioning as a popular history of the Lower East Side. In addition to instructions on how to become a true tea connoisseur and vegan chef du jour, Teany Book includes witty vignettes on Teany's history, anecdotes from Moby and Kelly, and tea-based health and beauty tips, such as how to cure a hangover with green tea. At once a unique glance at the culture of downtown New York and a quirky cookbook highlighting a nutritious and beneficial diet, Teany Book is a perfect purchase for tea fans, foodies, and hipsters alike.

4 out of 5 stars A book to dream about........2007-02-12

I'm not a fan of Moby's music, but I am a fan of tea and vegetarian food. Even if this book sometimes looks like a huge advertisement leaflet for teany, it also has really useful information and recipes that may or may not involve tea, but that are really good. When I read the one for Pan Bagna, I actually dreamt I was eating Pan Bagna that night! That's how yummy everything is! And I've already bought online a large amount of teas that come in the book. Can't wait to get them and do drink recipes with them, like lavender lemonade. Oh the luxury! If you are lucky enough to live in New York City, go pay teany a visit.

If you are stuck for something to give someone in your life who might be vegetarian/vegan, tea-totaler or just enjoys collecting unique cookbooks, look no further. Written by DJ Moby and the manager of his restarant, "Teany", this book shares insights about living an eco-friendly life with some tasty receipes. I made several of the them; they were not complicated or expensive and turned out great.

5 out of 5 stars Great little book!!.......2005-11-02

I loved this book, my only complaint...it should have been longer. It was funny, interesting and informative. I've been a vegetarian for 5 years so alot of the recipes were familar but the desserts were mostly new to me. Like a review posted earlier said, it's hard to classify this book. A little history, recipes, humor and Moby background...equals an entertaining book.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting look at tea, but it's not my cuppa either........2005-10-13

This was a book that I really wanted to like, but I found the entire premise and content a little too 'precious' for my tastes. As a devoted tea drinker, I was hoping to find some new ideas for what to serve up to go with my afternoon break -- instead, while some of the stories and touches of humor are funny, the ingredients were just a bit too odd for me to contemplate. Too, the book gets overly cute in spots, and while I do admire the author's stand on vegantarism, his self-effacing manner really begins to grate after about the fifth time that he mentions that he's trying not to be self-promoting. Hm-hmmm -- and what about that big sticker on the cover informing me of the latest cd release? It's nice for a once through, but I won't be adding it to my pernament collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining and Good Recipies too!.......2005-08-12

I'm a bit biased because I've always been a Moby fan. I believe, though, that anyone who buys this book will enjoy it. Moby has a great sense of humor and it really comes through in this book. From hangover cures to general ramblings about everyday life, there's something for everyone.

As a tea enthusiast, I thought that I knew as much as you could know about the stuff. Wrong! I learned a great deal about different kinds of tea and how you should prepare them. There's also some info on how to use tea/tea bags as remedies for different ailments.

The recipies are great. The Cashew Nut Butter sandwich is tasty and Moby's mom has a good burrito recipie in the book as well. I'm not a vegetarian and I liked the way that it wasn't "shoved" down your throat (as some of my friends have done). There were also hints on how to change some of the recipies to suit your meat loving friends.
