I can't believe this book has a five star rating. The whole thing is just too far-fetched for words. For example, someone wouldn't have 70 million dollars of drug money just unlocked in a closet. Not as bad as Palindrome but close. Swimming to Catalina and Chiefs are much better by this author. Especially Chiefs. I can't believe it was written by the same person.

There are two Stuart Woods out there, at least in my mind. There's the early Stuart Woods that wrote great books like 'Chiefs' and there's the Stone Barrister-writing Stuart Woods that just writes a formula plot, mail it in and collects a check.
This is definitely an early Stuart Woods book! I found myself pulled into this plot and I just had to know what happened next, despite the fact that the violence and sexual exploitation was a bit too extreme for my tastes. The ending was fairly hokey but the overall strength of the rest pf the book more than makes up for that.

The interesting life of an Icon.......2004-08-22
Felicity Kendal's life is everything but ordinary. Growing up in India as part of a traveling theatre company managed by her parents left her with little option of education or career. Ms. Kendal describes her childhood in India, the feelings of not fitting in in her 'native' England and the struggle to find a place. The story begans as a one sided conversation with her ailing father in a long term care facility. Moving smoothly between the past and present, the reader experiences the difficult aspects of her childhood, her love of India, the death of a much loved sister, and finally finding a place in the theatre of London. A well written and insightful book. I would recommend 'White Cargo' to any fan of this respected british actress or to anyone who has experienced the illness of a difficult, but loved parent.
White Cargo - A Golden Story.......2003-12-05
This book was quite a revelation for me as I have always been a fan of Felicity Kendall's TV comedy shows but had no idea that she grew up in India, where I spent much of my childhood at about the same time. Frequent references to places like Breach Candy in Bombay, and the Maidan and Chowringhee Road in Calcutta brought back vivid memories. So too did certain words and phrases like chowkidars (sort of watchman or servant), peons (messengers), dhobi (manual washerman or lady), chota pegs (small whisky's) and pye-dogs (loose unfettered mongrels, often rabid).
The descriptive writing is writing is evocative too and I quote the following passage from early in the book which aroused several senses in me: "A white mist hovered over the sprawling Maidan. In the early hours of the morning the dry grass looked lush with dew . . . the sickly sweet smell of the city had not yet taken hold of the day, and, in the cool air, the sounds of barking pye-dogs were still faint. Across the Maidan large black crows cawed and swooped at one another from the tall trees, and in the distance people walked and bicycled their way to work along the footpaths, municipal peons in their khaki shirts and bush shirts, pressed into starched creases that would not last till lunchtime, vendors in dhotis, their baskets of ware balanced perfectly on their heads, arms swinging freely in easy confidence." How brilliant is that?
This is not only a fascinating and entertaining autobiography but it is also entwined with the parallel story of Felicity's relationship with her father. The book carries a present day story line of her father lying very ill in hospital in the autumn of his life together with Felicity's own story throughout her life.
Felicity was taken to India by her parents as a baby as her father managed a travelling theatre specialising in the works of Shakespeare. The huge population of India together with their recent colonial British heritage meant that there was a potentially large audience the length and breadth of the sub-continent. The lifestyle of the family and acting troupe varied from splendid to meagre according to the cash flow and income generated by the performances. They boarded in splendour with Indian royalty on some occasions and in humble, if not run down lodgings on others. Felicity's first speaking stage performance was at the tender age of 9 and from then on that was to be her life. At age 18 she returned to England, against her father's will, on her own, to forge her own way in the world of theatre and found that England was a foreign country to her altogether. Never before had she owned a coat or worn gloves or stockings but the English climate dictated that she did so then. The cultural change was difficult to get used to as was the formal or strict attitude of the British compared to the more laid back philosophies espoused by the Indians.
The story takes us through her whole life from growing up in India and learning first to speak Hindi like a native, being top of the class later in Urdu, her love affairs and marriages, her motherhood, her extraordinarily successful role in TV's "The Good Life", her work with such dramatic giants as Ismail Merchant and Derek Jacobi through to the time of publishing in 1998. Throughout her life the constant threads are her family and India - two enormous constants. I look forward to, and will really enjoy, the sequel to "White Cargo" even if it is only half as good as the first.

Tom Feelings book the Middle Passage is an excellent book to use with students to help them learn about a topic that is often ignored (slavery). The images are striking and casue students to delve deeply into their emotional being to identfy the true feelings of slavery during a horrendous period of time. This books created great discussions and my students were able to broaden their scope on several topics: the middle passage, slavery, emancipation, etc. The best visual read that my students and I have had in a life time.

The Middle Passage is a phenominal series of paintings depicting the transportation of black slaves across the Atlantic. I use this large format book as a visual aid in my N.Y.C. art classes. It has inspired the type of dialogue we all want to have in our classrooms.

Arguably miscategorized as a children's book, The Middle Passage: White Ships/Black Cargo is a fascinating chronological still portrait of the slave trade. Tom Feelings' images are graphic yet beautiful, cruel and realistic, uplifting but heartbreaking. The absence of words intensified the images on the pages by letting them speak for themselves.
I particularly thought that the black and white (of the images as well as the intentional black/white of the figures in the images) was extremely powerful. The artwork is superb, but because of its violent subject material, other viewers might find it difficult to turn the pages. The details in the works are amazing, and the juxtaposition of the beauty of the human form and the cruelty of the slave trade is haunting.
A major asset to any book collection.
Silent Testimony.......2005-12-05
Inaccessible and obscure to many because of its controversial categorization under children's books, Tom Feelings' The Middle Passage: White Ships/Black Cargo relays a story that simply cannot go untold. People of all ages will experience a strong reaction to the vivid, black and white illustrations chronicling the brutal history of America, of race, and of humanity that can never really be fully remembered. I would advise against simply handing the book to a child without being prepared to undergo the painful process of explaining the meaning of the narrative relayed by Feelings. The artist graphically captures many of the different atrocities that occurred: violence, rape, and dehumanizing conditions. The book sparks productive discussion between all people on the slave trade and on the different methods of representing that history.

Dark red with large gilt lettering on front and spine. This book personally signed by Leiutenant General George E Stratemeyer. The inside flyleaf has his signature dated July 29, 1955 in dark blue. There are other notations in the upper left hand corner and lower section of the flyleaf referencing Commanding General FEAF. Stated as First Edition. May 1954. Heavily illustrated with black and white photographs. Included in the book is a copy of a letter written to the General from Henry Edward Schultz, National Chairman of the Anti Defamation League on October 4, 1955. Lieutenant General Stratemeyer responded to Mr. Schultz in a letter dated October 12, 1955. It appears the General was quite upset with Mr. Schultz letter to him and kept photocopies of them in this book. Included is a vintage Military Birthday card dated 1950 to Ken or Kevin, signed from Junior. An envelope to Master Sgt K Scoca at the USAF Hospital in California is with the copies of the letters. This is a very rare collectible item for the military buff. Pages are clean and free of writing. Lieutenant General George Edward Stratemeyer received the Distinguished Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters; Distinguished Flying Cross; Air Medal with oak leaf cluster; American Defense Service Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with five service stars; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with service star; World War I Victory Medal; World War II Victory Medal; American Campaign Medal with service star; National Defense Service Medal; Korean Service Medal with four service stars; Mexican Border Service Medal; Ho-Tu Medal of Chinese Air Force; Tashou Cloud Banner (Chinese) ; British Order of Companion of the Bath Chinese Special; Chinese Pilot's Badge; Polish Order of Polonia Restitute Commander's Cross; Most Excellent Order of the British Empire Degree of Knight Commander; Yugoslavian pilot's badge.

Bleak Seasons.......2003-07-11
Murgen has seizures in which he experiences memories of the horrible siege of Dejagore. In addition, he uses the comatose wizard Smoke as a source of clairvoyant information.
Whoa. Trippy.
I've heard some readers suggest that this was where they felt the series started to degenerate, but I liked this volume better than any others since the first one. It was dramatic and character-driven. Although much of it recaps the events of the book immediately before it in the series, it's from a very different point of view. When we finally get to the "now" moment, it's powerful. The inventive structure even includes some direct-address second person exposition-- and it works wonderfully.
It is, admittedly, confusing and disjointed at times.
I'm not sure how I feel about what Cook has done with cultures in this series. He's got his pseudo-cult of Kali, and now the Nyeung Bao, a pseudo-Vietnamese ethniticy. On one hand I like his use of non-Western images and ideas, but on the other hand I think there's a bit of exoticism going on, and I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer completely invented societies.
Overall, I think this book, in its different structure and emphasis, gives the series a new spark of life. It deepens our understanding of several characters, while maintaining the straightforward tone and grey morality that are the series' hallmarks.

The characters were so funny and interesting. I have read about 30 TSR books, but The Black Company are something else! I have grown tired of shallow characters and bad plots. These books are like fantasy books should be, funny and adventourous, not just bad wizards hurling battlespells. Read them!!!!!!

An excellent read, though it might be confusing if you haven't read the rest of the Black Company series. No all-powerful characters. Characters you can relate to on some level. This isn't some flowery fantasy ala Eddings. It can be brutal. There is no definite line between Good and Evil...just like in our reality.An excellent series...get them all: The Black Company / Shadows Linger / The White Rose / The Silver Spike / Shadow Games / Dreams Of Steel / Bleak Seasons / She Is The Darkness (to be released Fall 1997)
An excellent book for those who have read its predecessors........1996-10-20
For fans of Glen Cook's "Black Company" books, "Bleak Seasons" will be a treat. As he did previously in his "Dread Empire" saga, Mr. Cook spends an entire book giving the reader an alternate view of events already related earlier in the series. This means, however, that anyone not familiar with the history of the plot will be completely, utterly and hopelessly lost. If this is the reader's first exposure to Glen Cook, the best advice is for them to gently return the book to its place, to be sought out later when it will make more sense. The previous books of the Black Company, all noted in Amazon.com's catalog, should be read first. At the very least, the first two Books of the South ("Shadow Games" and "Dreams of Steel") are required in order to make sense of this book. For those who have read and enjoyed those, however, this book can be highly recommended

My husband loves to cook.... me, not so much. That being said, this cookbook for me is the most used, most helpful, and most excellent. Delicious, quick, and mainly (mostly) EASY. Definately worth every dollar. Plus, plenty of kid friendly recipies!!!

This is a great book! I wish I could give it six stars! I am such a fan of Bisquick now. Dinners come together in no time, and many can be halfed without a problem if you need to cook just for two. I love the cinnamon rolls!! Everything I have made has been great. Just tonight I made the Impossibly Easy Mac and Cheese Pie and it was great! And the more I use this book the more I love it. My in-laws are Japanese and don`t like sweet American desserts so I made the cinnamon strussle coffee cake as a birthday cake and it was a big success. I even saw them go for seconds which rarely ever happenes. Pictures with every recipie make it so easy to deside what to make (that is if you can choose between so many great recipies). I love the many "Betty tips" through out the book, like why things may have turned out wrong. I wish I had known some of the tips for my Christmas baking, such as why my muffins turned out hard: over mixed, some times lumps are ok. Now I can cook in confidence. I also like the fact that many of the recipies can be changed to suit my family`s taste, such as adding more cheese, mushrooms instead of onions, ect. Some of the "Betty tips" even suggest changes such as apples to peaches in desserts. You just can`t go wrong with this book. It really is great. I am now looking at buying Bisquick II. There are more uses for Bisquick than you can imagine - this book is great and the recipes are easy.

The book is a great starter book for those who don't think they can "cook from scratch" but will start with the Bisquick mix. The recipes are easy to prepare and down to earth. The color photographs are mouth watering.

In the days of a flourishing strawberry patch, the "basic" recipe for BISQUICK SHORT PIE was an absolute favorite, used frequently. It came from the 1964 General Mills cookbook - - published before "ISBNs" abounded. The small spiral edition still has a durable cover & well-tried recipes. It was, and is, the easy way to go for beginners not on restrictive diets.
NOT being 'a dumpling person,' that category of recipes will ever remain beyond my scope. But there are plenty of tempting others, including: Apple slump (named after the home of Louisa May Alcott), long-forgotten Waffle Club Rabbit, Tipsy Cake, Darn Goods (for camping days), Fresh Tomato Shortcake (?), Davy Jones Tuna Bake, and Sausage Ball Syrup (hmmmm !).
Continuing in popularity are Bisquick's Velvet Crumb Cakes and also their never-fail nut breads (be sure to try the cranberry variation). The 1964 edition has long been eclipsed by this newer edition for those who lean toward simplified, TIME-SAVING food preparation. Recipes are given (for example, the "IMPOSSIBLY EASY CHEESBURGER PIE") that encourage imaginatively concocted combinations calling for magic. You can almost visualize a guarantee of NO Friday the 13th kitchen disasters.
It all sounds like a fast food version of pretending to cook. Still, SHORT PIES are what Reviewer mcHAIKU will always enjoy, happily ignoring the calories.
