Excellent Book.......2007-03-09
This book was great the author has a real good imagination and could keep a reader entertained. I could'nt put the book down because i was dying to know what will happen next. The sequel is also good. I wish there would be a third part. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
Adra Young: Author.......2007-01-21
I found this book to be most entertaining. Definetly a page turner! Although I totally disagreed with a lot of the choices Natalia made, I truly enjoyed reading what she'd do next in terms of selecting her soul mate.
Urban Love Story.......2006-11-11
This Urban Loves Story was a definite one setting page turner. I was excited as well as surprise at how part one ended. Could hard wait to see if Norit Folkes could continue this story with the same exuberance. I would have to say that part two was just as stimulus!
I'mma Give This A 4.......2006-08-05
I gotta give this a 4 for the fact the Nat was being so stupid that i had to skip a couple of the parts with her. But overall this book was a page turner, I was dissappointed at how it ended. But I'm waithing to read part2, it better be as good as the first book.

The acclaimed author of Servant of the Bones makes real for us the exquisite and otherworldly society of the eighteenth-century castrati, the delicate and alluring male sopranos whose graceful bodies and glorious voices brought them the adulation of the royal courts and grand opera houses of Europe, men who lived as idols, concealing their pain as they were adored as angels, yet shunned as half men.
Book Description
In this mesmerizing novel, the acclaimed author of THE VAMPIRE CHRONICLES and the LIVES OF THE MAYFAIR WITCHES makes real for us the exquisite and otherworldly society of the eighteenth-century castrati, the delicate and alluring male sopranos whose graceful bodies and glorious voices brought them the adulation of the royal courts and grand opera houses of Europe, men who lived as idols, concealing their pain as they were adored as angels, yet shunned as half-men.
As we are drawn into their dark and luminous story, as the crowds of Venetians, Neopolitans, and Romans, noblemen and peasants, musicians, prelates, princes, saints, and intriguers swirl around them, Anne Rice brings us into the sweep of eighteenth-century Italian life, into the decadence beneath the shimmering surface of Venice, the wild frivolity of Naples, and the magnetic terror of its shadow, Vesuvius. It is a novel that only Anne Rice could have written, taking us into a heartbreaking and enchanting moment in history, a time of great ambition and great suffering--a tale that challenges our deepest images of the masculine and the feminine.
"To read Anne Rice is to become giddy as if spinning through the mind of time."
--San Francisco Chronicle
"Dazzling in its darkness...Spellbinding."
--The New York Times

Decadent!.......2007-09-30
When I was a preteen my friends and I delighted in using the term "decadent" (in French mind you) for just about anything we found wickedly delicious or had a rebellious and anti conformist flavor. And so it is that for this one and only Anne Rice book I've ever read I have only one word: "Decadent!"
My favorite book ever.......2007-08-22
I have read this 3 times now. And each time, I discover things I had not noticed before and I also discover that I love it more with each reading. This novel is at times darkly depressing but I loooove novels like that. Because if somthing can make me feel depressed after reading it, then it has accomplished somthing. I beleive it is pretty difficult to write somting dramatic, gut wrenching. And Anne succeeds. This is writing at its finest and most beautiful.
To some the subject matter of eunichs may not seem interesting, but it takes you into a whole other world that really did exist although you find it difficult to comprehend. I think one main reason I love this book is how she portrays the main characters. You cant help falling in love with their flaws and imperfections. Truly a great read.
Addendum to Other Reviews.......2007-03-22
The reviews of others, e.g., Chicago Dreamer and Fisher, are accurate, useful, and elegantly written; so I'll add only a few more thoughts. I avoided Rice and her vampire books mistakenly thinking that she was only a pulp/pop-fiction writer. When I read "Cry to Heaven," I was pleasantly surprised, even astonished. She obviously is intelligent, talented, and professional. My being an avid reader and member of a great-books discussion group for many years, I was impressed with her style and skill. Her detailed research into the era, locales, and the world of castrati was admirable. My having worked as a therapist for many years, I was profoundly touched by the insight and sensitivity with which Ann explored the thoughts and feelings of Tonio. My having been a life-long lover of serious music and also a researcher and lecturer into the subject of Baroque music and the castrati, I was impressed with her accuracy and understanding of this amazing phenomenon.
"Cry to Heaven" would make a unique and wonderful movie, but only if it were to be made very well, perhaps as a "labor of love" as was Visconti's "Death in Venice" and with an appropriate budget, time, and effort similar to Peter Jackson's, albeit longer, "Lord of the Ring" triology. Of course, there would be several difficulties to overcome.
First, Tonio grows from childhood into young adulthood, requiring perhaps three look-alike actors of special beauty, as described by Ann, and with convincing acting ability.
Second, the superlative castrato voice would have to be created most likely by using 21st-century technology (which would take time but should not be overly difficult) to cover the wide alto-to-soprano range plus the vocal strength suitable for the opera stage. Very importantly, the uninformed mistakes of the "Farinelli" producers would have to be avoided, i.e., using an average, female soprano with distinctly female timbre, breathiness, and technical imprecision along with an average countertenor with similar problems. For the alto range, superlative countertenor Andreas Scholl has the talent, experience, power, and voi-blanc sound required to approximate the castrato voice. Unfortunately, the perfect female soprano Gundula Janowitz no longer sings, but there may be one or two now available who have voices far superior to the one used in the 1994 "Farinelli." Also, natural male sopranos such as Jorge Cano or Radu Marian might be used. Then these voices could be electronically blended to form a consistent, ideal voice.
Third, the sex scenes in Ann's novel are not gratuitous and do explore the natural drives and emotional confusion of the castrati. They should not be avoided in a movie version and can be filmed tastefully so that they would not be offensive to anyone other than those persons who are horrified by sex and prefer to deny human nature.
Perhaps a dedicated film maker such as Visconti or Jackson will have the courage, support, and budget to make a quality film version of Ann's book. In the meantime, this book should be a must-read for anyone who is interested in the subject and also is looking for a good, dramatic tale.
Competent plot and writing, but lacks memorability and impact. Hesitantly recommended as a fast, enjoyable, but forgettable read.......2006-10-28
Tonio Treschi is a growing boy, the heir a small but noble Venetian family, and he has the singing voice of an angel. Guido Maffeo is a grown castrato who lost his singing voice in adolescence and now teaches young castrati and composes music. When Tonio is castrated at the order of a jealous and vengeful relative, he is forced into Guido's care and banished from Venice. Guido takes him to the school for castrati where he himself was taught, and endeavors to train Tonio's voice and make him into the best singer the world has ever seen. Old enough to know the world of men, but now removed from it forever, Tonio is caught between a desire to avenge the crime against him, mourning for what he has lost, and the first chance at happiness that he has ever know. Cry to Heaven is a well-plotted story and competently told, but lacks the sincerity to make it truly meaningful or memorable. The characters aren't nearly as compelling as some of the others in Rice's books, and the issues within the book are generally dealt with too bluntly and without much thought or detail. It is a fast, entertaining read and never becomes difficult or slow, but its lasting impact is somewhat limited. As a result, I recommend this book only hesitantly.
There isn't much more to say about Cry to Heaven. It is neither disappointing nor impressive, and neither good or bad. The plot and writing style are more than competent, keeping the book moving at a good pace, introducing plenty of problems and resolutions in the plot and working its way up to one major climax at the end of the book. My only compliant with the writing itself is the lack of emotional resolution at the end of the book--the action builds up nicely, but the actual conclusion to the book seems a little empty and unexplored, especially in comparison to the character insight in the body of the text. Other than that detail, all of the necessary authorial techniques are there and the book is approachable, holds the reader's attention, and has a strong plot.
But outside of plot devices and action, there isn't much to this book, leaving the reader with nothing memorable or though-provoking. Rice may not be a particularly "deep" writer, but some of her other books prove that she is capable of creating and exploring complex moral situations, emotions, and ideas. The underlying ideas upon which Rice tries to and could have expanded upon are present, specifically the gender ambiguity and third-gender roles of the castrati, but Rice approaches them too bluntly to make the issues detailed or thoughtful. She rushes into sexual situations, cross-dressing, and androgyny too quickly and easily and her approach to the subject becomes repetitive: repeat sexual encounters, repeat manliness angst, and not much more. If explored in more depth, the contents and characters of this book would probably be much more meaningful; as it is, they are interesting while reading but have no long-term impact on the reader.
I recommend this book as a quick, enjoyable, attention-grabbing read, but I don't recommend it very strongly. It won't be a book that I come back to, and I would recommend some of Rice's other books before this one. The text isn't worth seeking out, but if you stumble upon it like I did (for fifty cents at a library sale), then by all means give it a go.
One Of Rice's Two Best Books.......2006-09-06
Out of everything Anne Rice has written in a thirty-year career of widely-varying quality, only Interview With A Vampire outranks this novel. Set in the realm of music in eighteenth-century Italy among the fabled castrati, the story here is about a young man named Antonio, a beautiful boy with an angelic face and a perfect singing voice. Antonio's early life is spent in a secluded villa, surrounded by the glories of music, and dominated by a loving but strangely reticent elderly father figure, a melancholy, alcoholic mother, and a mysterious man whose intrusions into Antonio's childhood disrupted the fabric of life within his entire family. The revelation of exactly who this mysterious, bitterly angry man happens to be provides the heat in the first half of this book. Antonio's fate and his rise to prominence among the musical hierarchy make up the heart of this tale of revenge, glory, love, and tragedy in the age of opera.

I lost my son earlier this year and bought this book to give me some idea of what heaven must be like from a childrens view. When I am low or sad I read this and it makes it just a little bit easier, reading that he is in a magical place as described. It is beautifully done and a wonderfull tool to help you through the grieveing process.
Great book..........2007-07-09
I bought this book for myself after loosing our first baby, Cameron at the end of my first trimester, just 3 weeks ago today. And, I must say that I did indeed cry while reading it, but the simple words of this book have already started healing the deep wounds in my heart. The illustrations are beautiful, and I would recommend this to anyone who has lost an infant.
This book brought me Peace and Hope After my Miscarriage.......2007-05-15
Mommy Please Don't Cry
By Linda DeYmaz
Illustrations by Sabrina Smith
After giving three kids, and three great pregnancies, it was a shock to me when I showed up for a normal second trimester checkup only to discover that my baby might be dead.
I had no signs of miscarriage at all. No bleeding, no cramping. My OB only did the ultrasound to see if there might be twins (since I was getting up there in age.)
When he turned the screen away from my view, my heart sank. There was no heart beat.
What followed were two weeks of more tests and ultrasounds, and eventually a D & C. We had lost our precious baby.
That was probably one of the darkest times in my life, and it was difficult to get out of bed and tale care of my three children. I cried a lot, and I wasn't sure how to get past the pain.
Though there is no easy way to recover from a miscarriage, one book that brought me hope was Mommy Please Don't Cry by Linda DeYmaz.
This book is written from the perspective of the lost baby speaking to their mother about the beauty and glory of heaven. It was so comforting to read and cry over the pages of Mommy Please Don't Cry time and time again. It helped heal my heart.
If you have had a miscarriage, or know someone who has, this book is very healing. I strongly encourage you to get a copy, and share the love of Christ with them.
Several years later, I did suffer a second miscarriage, and now have 2 glory babies in heaven waiting on me. And I know that someday, I will hold them, and "our hearts will again beat as one."
Mommy, Please Don't Cry: There Are No Tears In Heaven".......2006-10-29
I have ordered and given away close to a dozen of these. It's an amazing book and touches the heart of a woman at the point she needs it.

Customer Reviews:
Noble, disciplined, good-guy Orcs. -- Yech!!.......2007-01-07
The Orcs were always my absolute favourite part of the universe that J.R.R. Tolkien created for his unforgettable fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings. So I was pretty excited when I found out that here were not just 1 or 2, but 3 WHOLE books devoted solely to them in which they were the main characters. I couldn't wait to read them!
But I was crushingly disappointed when I started reading and realized that these Orcs were nothing like the charmingly cutthroat ones infesting Tolkien's world, and Stan Nicholls had instead chosen to make his Orcs noble goody-goodies.
Instead of Tolkien, Nicholls seems to take for his inspiration here the countless works which seek to depict Native North Americans and other less developed peoples as some kind of "noble savages". And in opposition to this, we have here the one-dimensionally villainous Humans who encroach upon the vast open spaces across which these nobly high-minded Orcs have roamed free since time immemorial.
The Humans are divided into the Mansis who worship many gods (ie. the Pagans), and the Unis who worship just one god (ie. this universe's Christians). It is the Unis who carry out massacres on helpless Orc villages in the name of their religion (again shades of early North American history) and plot to take over the entire world.
By contrast, the Orcs in this book are depicted as highly disciplined, professional warriors who operate by a strict code of honour. They address each other respectfully by military rank, and obey orders carefully and precisely. -- NOTHING like the wild and chaotically dangerous hordes of Tolkien's Mordor.
And worst of all, with the way that Stan Nicholls writes dialogue, the way his Orcs speak is also NOTHING like the wonderfully vile vibe we get from the language that Tolkien so carefully crafted. In fact, one of the BIGGEST complaints I had while reading this book was that due to the dialogue (very modern, colloquial English), I kept having images of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles popping into my head instead of Orcs. -- VERY annoying!!!
About the only character who did live up to my expectations of nastiness for this book was the evil half-Human/half-Reptilian queen who has enslaved and now rules over our heroic Orcs. But much like the "evil" Humans, she is only depicted quite superficially and is just used as a heavy to highlight the oh-so-goody-twoshoes qualities of Nicholls' Orcs.
Overall I had the impression that this was a book that tried to carefully sanitize the Orcs to make them acceptable role models for potential young readers. But if this book might seem to be intended for young readers, then I should also warn you that it unexpectedly included some explicit (and gory) sexuality, so it's not exactly a kids' book either.
I should confess that this book ended on such a cliffhanger that even though I didn't particularly like it, I did pick up the second book just to find out what happened.
But still, all I can say is if you expect to find the same kind of deliciously evil Orcish rabble as you loved in the Lord of the Rings, you will probably be just as disappointed as I am with this book.
Good Show.......2005-04-18
At first aproach i was slightly wary of the book, i mean, orcs? heroes? noble creatures? And yet, as you progess through the book, you begin to feel great empathy for these natural-born warriors, who, since there birth have been forced to fight for masters they disagree with, as blind servants, with no say in their own destiny. Suddenly, they have choice, and the opputunity to decide for themselves what their next move will be, not just to be told, and carry out their orders or face certain death. Their journey, and the enemies they face in all directions will have you not only understanding their way of life, but rooting for them, holding your breath, and hoping this next fight will not be their last. It's a book that sucks you in and won't let go, although you might want to harden your stomach to some of the....grosser details.....it's fast-paced, action packed, gritty, and more often than not, very funny. This is a worth edition to any fantasy reader's collection.
great.......2004-08-07
if u loved lotr then ull love this its sordof like the lotr except orcs are the good guys. this also is very detailed and even if u dont like reading u wont want to stop reading this and ull be eager to read the sequel
Fascinating and skillfully written.......2003-03-25
My name is max and this book is my second favorite book and i read alot of books so i recommend you read this trust me you will fall in love with this book and the sequels the only reason why i recommend you dont read this series is that when your done no book will be able to meet your imagination of this thrilling tale
A good book, though a little annoying at times.......2001-07-23
I must admit that writting from the Orcs point of view is a good idea. But Im affraid that Stan does'nt pull it off particulary well. He strays from the traditional orc charater too much, having them sing of fair orcish ladies and the such.
All books (it is said) have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Not so in this case. The entire story seems the "middle", completely lacking a begining or end. That means that there was no final battle, and the book ended abruptly.
There are good points however. The beginning chapter is so gripping that it will probably motivate you to read half the book in one sitting. Its fast paced and delivers a lot of action through out. The characters are a little cold, but when it comes to a battle, Stan directs them well.
It's worth checking out if you intend to spend time reading the entire series. It does leave you with the incentive to buy the next novel by leaving you on a cliff hanger at the end of the book.
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite and most used cookbooks.......2007-01-09
I've owned and used this cookbook for at least 13 years. It is one of my favorites not only for it's excellent explanation of liturgical feasting and fasting (What other cookbook gives you a chapter on fasting?) but also because some of my family's favorite recipes are in it. We use "Four-egg cake" for nearly every birthday, baptism or first communion. My family actually loves the recipe for "Black fruitcake," and I get frequent complements when I bring her simply delicious "Cranberry-orange sauce" to holiday dinners. And Easter just wouldn't be Easter for my kids without the "Lamb cake."
I own the hardcover edition and my chief complaint is that it is not spiral bound to lay flat while cooking.
We have tried one or two recipes that just didn't taste all that great, but were culturally interesting to try. ("Salad of the good night/Ensalada de Nochebuena" from Mexico comes to mind. Perhaps because it calls for beets, apples, oranges, bananas, radishes and peanuts together. Sounded so weird I just had to try it. But I guess it's an acquired taste.)
I still enjoy reading her comments on the feast days throughout the year. I can't help but think of her recipe for "St. John's wine" every December 27th. Simple to make (always a plus) and warms the inside when it's cold and blustery outside.
incomplete at best.......2003-10-01
There are too many gaps in this book and I find myself looking for something else to replace or complement it. For example, today is the feast day of Saint Therese the Little Flower and there is no mention of her, which is dissappointing, especially for my homeschooled daughter for whom this book was purchased. She does however very much enjoy the information in this book and would appreciate any recomendations to fill in the gaps.
Good book for family religous customs.......2002-02-08
As an Anglo-Catholic who was not raised as one, I have had many questions about customs and liturgies. This is one of the sources I reach for first when I need answers.
The focus of this book is on home practices, on customs and especially on foods. However, this is not just a collection of recipes for various Saint's days, but also includes information about each saint and about the seasons of the liturgical year, starting, quite properly, with a discussion of "Sunday" since each Sunday is a mini-celebration of Easter.
If you are raising a family and wish to do so in a Christ-centered way, you should have a copy of this book. While it is aimed primarily at Catholic and Orthodox families there is much material here that would be useful in a Protestant family, particularly one that wishes to explore the two thousand years of Christian tradition rather than "re-inventing the wheel."
Nice fun book.......2001-08-10
This is a nice book with some fun information about saints and their days. After buying it, our family started to celebrate name days (any excuse to have a celebration). I wish it had more ideas for meals and more saint days, but the ones already in there are well done.
A great introduction into cooking for the Church year!.......2001-03-19
This is a really helpful cookbook, especially if you didn't come out of a liturgical tradition orginally. Evelyn Vitz has laid the book out in a calendar fashion for the most part, but has sections on days of fasting and abstinence and saints days. I really love her recipe for plum pudding and use it every year now. I had tried several other recipes before hers, but hers is definitely the best. We have also included a lot of her other suggestions in our family celebrations. This is a cookbook that I refer to frequently (especially during Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter).
This book is great for any Christian family that wants to add a bit more traditional Christian emphasis to their lives. You don't have to be Catholic or Orthodox to enjoy it and use it. You may find yourself understanding Catholic and Orthodox traditions once you've read it, however.
This book passes on traditions that some families failed to get from Great Grandmother before she died. If you are from a Christian family, it will help you get in touch with your roots (as well as give you a lot of delicious recipes to try).
