Book Description
The latest case in Donna Leon's bestselling Brunetti mystery seriesone of the most exquisite and subtle detective series ever (The Washington Post)
The Philadelphia Inquirer called Leon's incomparable creation Commissario Guido Brunetti the most humane sleuth since Georges Simenon's Inspector Maigret. It's no wonder then that Leon's legion of fans continues to grow with each new book that's published. In Through a Glass, Darkly, Brunetti investigates the murder of a night watchman, whose body is found in front of a blazing furnace at Giovanni De Cal's glass factory along with an annotated copy of Dante's Inferno. Did the cantankerous De Cal kill him? Will Brunetti make the connection between the work of literature and the murderer in time?
Customer Reviews:
Good Brunetti Book.......2007-07-13
Donna Leon continues her streak of delightful Guido Brunetti novels -- this one set mostly in the glass factories of Murano. She combines fascinating details of the fabled Venetian glass factories with well-developed characters and vivid geography to cook up a tale of intrigue and complexity. I think her characters here are more nuanced than in her other books, which is not a criticism of those other books. Fortunately, Donna Leon seems to be avoiding the trap of other popular authors who, after a few successes, seem to go into a slump. Leon just gets better and better with her irresistible tales of Venice.
A Murder(?) in Venice.......2007-05-19
It was not on purpose that I purchased another book set in the facinating city of Venice. If I get any more of these books, I will have to take it as a sign to travel to Italy and spend a few weeks in Venice.
This is a murder mystery, but you are not really sure that there really is a murder at all. The death under question does not happen until over half way though the book and it is only at the very end that we get our answer as to whether it was or was not.
A very good book.
Brunetti rules.......2007-05-12
As always, the subtleness of Brunettie's character continues and the formula for mixing mystery, family, location, and all those other good things works so well. Thank you Donna Leon!
Book Description
Donna Leon opens doors to the hidden Venice like no one else. With her latest novel, Through a Glass, Darkly, Leon takes us inside the secretive island of Murano, home of the world-famous glass factories. On a luminous spring day in Venice, Commissario Brunetti and his assistant Vianello play hooky from the Questura in order to help Vianello's friend Marco Ribetti, arrested during an environmental protest. They secure his release, only to be faced by the fury of the man's father-in-law, Giovanni De Cal, a cantankerous glass factory owner who has been heard in the bars of Murano making violent threats about Ribetti. Brunetti's curiosity is piqued, and he finds himself drawn to Murano to investigate. Is De Cal the type of man to carry out his threats? Then one morning the body of De Cal's night watchman is found. Over long lunches, on secret boat rides, in quiet bars, and down narrow streets, Brunetti searches for the killer. Will he unravel the clues before the night watchman's death is allowed to be forgotten?
A fascinating novel set in the intersection between tourism and native Venetian society, Through a Glass, Darkly is Donna Leon at her finest.
Customer Reviews:
You've heard of Italian "slow food"? Now welcome the Venetian "slow book".......2007-05-24
As someone who is interested in Italy and books, it was only a matter of time before I read a Commissario Brunetti tale. But I guess I should have done my homework first, as it seems that this was probably the wrong place to start. Sheesh, even devoted Donna Leon fans seem upset about THROUGH A GLASS, DARKLY.
This is not to diminish Donna Leon's novel too much. It is a pleasant read, with interesting asides about Italy, its culture, and the environmental challenges it faces. But it's telling that I made a note of page 110. That is the first place where anything that could be called "action" takes place. And what happens there? Some glass blowers blow glass. So while I enjoyed this book, it may provide too phlegmatic of a plot for many readers, and it is apparently the wrong place for first-timers to begin.
Highly Recommended: The Shape of Water and the other Inspector Maltalbano books by the extraordinary Sicilian, Andrea Camilleri.
Way under par.......2007-05-07
I previously read A Noble Radiance by the same author and enjoyed it. I grabbed this book while away on business when I finished the other book I was reading. The only good thing to say is that this novel helped me go sleep quickly.
The plot meanders and is not very interesting. Brunetti is basically investigating a threat to someone which gets his foot in the door when something finally happens. Basically, the first half of the book is about something which is only marginally related to the dead body. I struggled to finish the book and will not put it in the pile of books for my wife to read. Instead, it is going in the giveaway pile.
Deadly glass.......2007-03-04
Inspector Vianello asks his boss, Commissario Brunetti to help him obtain the release of one of his friends who was arrested at a demonstration protesting the chemical pollution of the canals of Venice. This leads them into the investigation of the murder of a worker at a glass blowing factory in Murano, the world famous home of the glass blowing industry. The main culprit seems likely to be the owner of one of the factories, a choleric old man who is convinced that his old ways of getting rid of the residue of his business isn't harmful to anyone and who refuses to bend to any new, environmentally friendly rules. What follows is a story of greed, lust for political power and one of Donna Leon's usual great reads about the exploits of the Venetian police officer, Commissario Brunetti and the every day life of the people of Venice.
Another excellent Commissario Brunetti myster.......2007-01-21
Donna Leon not only writes a good mystery tale, but she shows you a picture of Venice and of the people who live there; their attitudes and beliefs. It is refreshing to have the main character in a strong marriage with normal teenagers interacting positively. In this story, Ms. Leon lets you decide in your own mind about the mystery involved, but she deals with some very important issues that the world should be considering. She has developed and strenghtened her characters through her novels, and you anticipate what is happening. She does a have a cynical attitude toward politicians and politics, which is also true worldwide. Commissario Brunetti, in this story, tackles a difficult death in a caring manner. One of the enjoyable characters, Signorina Elettra, continues her control of gathering information, as she has also gained importance through the book series. I strongly recommend this book to those who enjoy a good mystery set among people who have to deal with death and narrow-minded people.
The first Donna Leon book I haven't finished - and don't plan to........2007-01-20
Donna Leon must have cooking something when she wrote this book. It was like she kept checking to see if the something was done in the oven and came back and wrote a chapter to a different book. Some chapters seems totally unrelated to the book. Characters get mentioned and when I thumbed back to see who she was talking about, I couldn't find them. How can someone write such a great series of books and then totally bomb?!! It is a limp and tired story involving an environmental problem at a glass factory. Donna needs a vacation...from Venice!
PS. I never finished the book - it just isn't interesting.
Book Description
In Dark Sister, Lynn V. Andrews sheds brilliant light on the dangerous, destructive aspects of women's power by following the remarkable story of Sin Corazn, an initiate in the Sisterhood of the Shields. As she begins her apprenticeship, Corazn is encouraged to explore and confront her fascination with the dark mysteries of the soul in order to overcome them. When her husband abandons her for another woman, however, she succumbs to her dark side and unleashes the full extent of her rage. It is only through love that she is able to find peace.
Using the shamanistic themes and language that have formed the core of Andrews' work, Dark Sister offers a timely lesson that helps women accept -- and harness -- their sexual power and capacity for aggression. It is an eloquent, empowering parable that ultimately teaches readers an essential key to achieveing greater self-knowledge and inner tranquillity.
Customer Reviews:
Lynn Andrews' books and work.......2000-04-14
I am a 4th year student at Lynn Andrews' school and I am living in Germany. I read all of Lynn's books that are very precious and important to me. The books and the school led me to a completely new and sacred vision of life. I am very grateful for my experiences with Lynn's and the Sisterhood of the Shields' work.
Passionate Betrayal.......1999-12-14
This book was an amazing discovery of spiritual forces which even though can commence from the place of power and wisdom can if not vigilant become a force of darkness and sorcery. It is a lesson in forgiveness and the importance of protecting your spirit self from the dangers of evil forces which disguise themselves well. This book was particularly relevant in my work with others and a timely reminder that sometimes not all things are as they seem and that spirituality has two directions and not all spiritual people are working towards light. I found the writing visionary as are all Lynn's books but also show us her vulnerable and sometimes niave nature in her belief that we are all here to serve for the greater goodness. Could not put the book down until it was finished and recommend it to anyone who is in the healing or spiritual realm.
Find love, find the light........1998-09-27
Dark Sister is another winner for Lynne Andrews. Lynne and her teachers, Agnes and Ruby, explore the dark mysteries of the soul. I enjoyed this tale of a fallen sister, Sin Corazon and her powerful journey from the dark side of sorcery to the light of the Sisterhood of the Shields. Lynne has shown us that through love a person can conquer the darkness we all carry within us. Lynne also explains that we all can find and peace and tranquillity we search for through love. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for the key that will open the door that leads to greater self knowledge and inner tranquillity.

Over three thousand families were torn apart on September 11, 2001. But from the devastation of that day, another family was formed--a family bound not by biology, culture or country, but by compassion and the commitment to spare all others the loss and pain they had shared. It is almost unfathomable to think that on the day following the September 11 attacks, some of the victims' families were already thinking about the terrible political consequences of their personal nightmares and were seeking a means to prevent them. September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows: Turning our Grief into Action for Peace describes how these families (totaling 80 to date), from all over the country and from all kinds of backgrounds, formed a non-profit organization dedicated to finding peaceful alternatives to the U.S. war on terror. The book intersperses a narrative that describes the group's development and activity (written by David Potorti, a group member) with personal essays by individual family members, and (the sometimes shocking) e-mail responses to the group's website: www.peacefultomorrows.org.
The mission of the September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows is idealistic: it opposes war in the name of their lost loved ones and advocates the prevention of terrorism by addressing the difficult problems that lie at its root, namely extremism, militarism, poverty, racism, ignorance, inequality, hatred, hopelessness, and rage. Angry opponents to the group's goals and pursuits, including some in the media, have labeled them "unpatriotic," "cowards," "ignorant," and "naïve"--particularly in response to their reaching out to the Afghani and Iraqi victims of U.S. military action. But fair-minded readers of this powerful book will certainly be moved by the courage, commitment, compassion, and moral conviction expressed by these extraordinary/ordinary people and their supporters. Joined together by their grief and dedication, the group shows how "people-to-people, you can make a difference." --Silvana Tropea
Book Description
Nominated for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, the Peaceful Tomorrows (families of September 11 victims) present a groundbreaking collection of essays, poems, songs and art about pacifism as a response to tragedy.
Opposition to George W. Bush's war against Iraq is growing. No voices in the resistance are more powerful, more visible, or more credible than "September 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows," a nonprofit group of family members of September 11 victims dedicated to finding alter-natives to war as a response to personal and national tragedies. The Peaceful Tomorrows represent more than fifty people who lost loved ones in New York, Washington and Shanksville, PA, as well as more than two thousand supporters. They have spoken in twenty-five states and eight foreign countries, and have sent delegations to both Afghanistan and Iraq to meet with civilians who similarly lost loved ones due to terrorism and war. On February 15, 2003, members of Peaceful Tomorrows led the United for Peace march in New York City, which drew more than two hundred fifty thousand people.
This book will begin with an account by editor (and group member) David Potorti, covering the first year and a half of the Peaceful Tomorrows-how they came together to form the group, how they pursued their mission without an income, and how they connected with people in other countries. This introduction will be followed by -essays from group members on various topics, including forgiveness and keeping the faith (Andrew Rice/Myrna Bethke); the power of music (Kristina Olsen/Derrill Bodley); creating community (Barry Amundson); a military perspective (Ryan Amundson); a report from the delegations to Iraq (Kat Tinley, Terry Rockefeller), Afghanistan (Kelly Campbell, Rita Lasar), and Hiroshima/Nagasaki (Amundson, Lasar); and a commentary on the media's -response to both the 9/11 disaster and the work of the Peaceful -Tomorrows (Potorti). The volume will also include guest essays from high-profile supporters of the Peaceful Tomorrows.

Customer Reviews:
Great intro.......2007-07-04
This is a great introduction to the world of coffee for anyone getting into any part of the industry or if you just really enjoy coffee and want to learn more about it.
A solid, useful reference.......2007-05-13
I particularly enjoyed the Chapter on Regional Character (pp 47 - 71). I disagree with description of Kenya as being a "... brooding heavyweight ..." page 39. Kenyan coffee is notably light-bodied. Book has a good glossary of terms in Appendix A.
To the point -not over powering .......2007-03-12
I wanted to know about coffee. This book gave me knowledge about coffee. Easy to read and to the point. After reading this book I ended up talking to individuals in the coffee business and I was able to communicate on their level about coffee and its production.
Great source for coffee amateurs.......2005-09-26
I recommend this book for any person who wants to explore and expand his knowledge about the coffee. Its history, procedures, types of coffee, regions, recipes, etc. Good book with much information.
Great coffee book.......2003-05-12
This book gives a good basic understanding of what coffee is all about. I especially like the specificity of information about coffees from different areas in the Regional Character chapter. For example, discussing Costa Rica's two best growing areas and how the coffees differ. I also found the opinions of which coffees are worthy of their price helpful. I read the Perfect Cup first and am glad I did because it was a good coffee overview for me. Coffee Basics was a great second book for me because I was looking for more specific information about coffees of each area. If I hadn't read Perfect Cup first I think the break down of info. on each type of coffee/regional character would have been information overload for me. If you are new or relatively new to the coffee world and are excited about learning more and more about the subtlties and nuiances present in that cup, I highly recommend you read this book.

Customer Reviews:
Great starter book on tea.......2007-05-06
To try to prevent my niece from spending all of her time in college going to starb%#ks I recently put together a care package of tea brewer, a few starter books on tea, and some nice loose leaf teas in tins. Going through the recently published books on tea I found this one which is a nice paperback book on tea basics. It has a little filler but covers all of the fundamentals in a concise way, a brief history of camellia sinensis, where it is grown today, grades, types, how the market for tea works, tea vocabulary, some pros/cons on how to brew, and has a nice list of tea resources appended to the back. It even has a good brief description on how to cure a new yixing pot. I like it when a "book on basics" is done well for a topic, and this one is in that category. Not a lot of pretty pictures here... just some good basic information on tea. Throw in Okakura Kakuzo, one of the paperbacks by Diana Rosen and you have yourself a nice present to give someone just starting out with tea. WARNING to tea novices, this stuff is addicting and before you know it you will have an assortment of kettles cups and pots, thermometers, scales, infusers, tins and a dogeared copy of John Blofeld's book. You have been warned.
tea time.......2002-09-12
I absolutely was intrigued by this book, read while sipping a cup of tea. My favorite teas are Republic of Tea, I'd recommend those as well! I liked learning about "TGBOP", Oolong teas, how to brew teas, teas from different countries, etc. I am by no means a tea snob, just a tea lover. This book is great for tea drinkers of any kind.
Perfect for the Tea Beginner.......2002-01-04
This book impressed me. It is easy to read, has a personal feel, and covers all of the basics (what tea is, history, where it is produced, how to brew it, tea tasting, tea ceremonies, etc). Many resources are listed in the back. I have five books on tea so far (a beginner), and this is my favorite. If you only want one book on tea, this is my recommendation. The health section is pretty basic, so if that interests you, you might want to also look at a health-related tea book (green tea). This book describes the general regions, whereas the Tea Companion book describes the individual tea gardens (which may or may not be useful to you.)
