Book Description
Denver detective Jake McCoy was rehabbing at her cabin in the mountains, trying to reconcile the shooting death of a young boy. Psychologist Nicole Westbrook, an expert in domestic violence, is in those very same mountains, escaping from the horrors of her profession for a brief vacation. Nicole becomes lost when she leaves the well-marked hiking trail in search of hot springs, and she stumbles upon Jake, who is enjoying her own soak in remote springs. They exchange first names only, but after a few hours together, a physical attraction neither can explain, engulfs them, leaving them as lovers, not strangers, when Nicole departs the following day. But when Jake returns to Denver, a murder investigation leads her to Nicole. Both are surprised that they are face to face with the stranger they thought they'd never see again, Nicole tries to remain in the professional closet that she's been hiding in for so long, a place where out cop Jake McCoy does not fit. And Jake, still trying to recover from the shooting that left her injured, does her best to distance herself from Nicole. It is soon evident that a serial killer is targeting Nicole's former patients. Try as they may, they can not deny the physical attraction between them, even if it means compromising the investigation. But after all is said and done, the fact remains that Nicole and Jake live in two different worlds. Despite the physical attraction and the gentle tug of love, both women accept that when their case is over, they will go their separate ways. Jake retreats back to the mountains, and Nicole resumes her practice in earnest, both trying to forget the other . . . and both failing.

Exciting, intense, beautiful & frustrating.......2007-09-23
This is probably my favorite Gerri Hill novel to date. She really takes her time to establish character and setting, and later wrap up the plot. I read the Target before this novel, so astute review-readers will know that I already enjoyed the descriptions of the countryside and mountains around Colorado. In addition, I like the peace that the characters in this novel were able to gain by jouneying into the wilderness. It was nice that the vivid natural descriptions weren't just in the novel for their own sakes either, but that as we experience the wonder with the characters, we also learn about what makes them tick.
It was fun to have the characters meet early in the novel when both are outside of their normal lives and comfort zone. That really kept the reader in suspense for the point when they would run into one another again.
The set-up of both their lives was interesting. I was touched by Jake's relationship with her dog, though to be a true secondary character perhaps Cheyenne's actions and reactions should have been explored in more depth. The way in which Nicole had constructed her own life, isolated despite a powerful circle of lesbian "friends" was also an interesting twist on the forces pulling her away from Jake, even as she was drawn to her.
The ending of the mystery wasn't completely unexpected, but was twisty and solid enough to satisfy. Since the mystery in these books is basically an accompaniment versus the main performance, I have no trouble accepting it for what it is, and being entertained by it. I could have strangled the characters themselves for their constant dithering, not so much throughout the book, but in particular at the end, and if there's one consistent criticism I'd have for Gerri Hill's books it's that her characters seem to take that indecisiveness just over the line for me. But perhaps this isn't unrealistic; I guess it's just a balancing act on how flawed versus how ideal we want our heroes to be.
I struggled about whether to give this 3 or 4 stars. It seems to be a pattern that I can't make a decision myself on placing these books in a solid category (constantly whining about 1/2 stars), but while above the average 3 star book, I don't know if this actually is one of my favorites. Definitely 3-1/2. The more I think about it, the more I really like many aspects of it. Time will tell if it becomes a 4 in my mind.
The Killing Room.......2007-09-10
I read this book over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised. Most lesbian fiction books tend to be very formulaic, but this one was not. I found the characters very believable and realistic, as well as most of the story. The hot springs sex scene is a bit out there (as far as plausibility is concerned), but is still well written. It also was not overly sappy-- there's romance, but not the kind that makes you say "oh, please" with every sentence. Hill is actually a very good writer and I intend to buy all of her books now.
Mystery With Touching Moments.......2007-05-21
This mystery novel has a great cast of characters who are very true to life. You'll be touched as you watch these women open their hearts to each other.
Excellent Characters / Excellent Mystery!.......2007-05-07
I am new to this author's works. Having read "The Target" first, I may not have approached this journey with her finest work.
But after reading the first 90 pages of "The Killing Room," I had to put my Saturday afternoon plans on hold just so I could finish reading this book.
Although I felt there were a number of mundane chapters early on, the rest of the book well made up for it. Excellent mystery, and excellent character development. Most enjoyable read.
High Interest/great characters.......2007-01-10
This was a really great novel. The characters were very believable and alive throughout the story. I read it quickly not missing a single detail. It's great to read something the reflects some real women. there is an intensity in the passions shared that is very real when women open their hearts to one another. Good writing!

Hard Hitting Excellent and Exciting Mystery Thriller.......2004-01-10
This book opens with a prologue so intense that I almost tossed my cookies as I was reading it, but there was no way I was going to put it down. With Stephen King like description, coupled with a hard hitting style reminiscent of the hard boiled P. I. books I used to sneak away from my dad and read when I was a kid, Mr. May has put together a story that will capture you from the first page and it won't let you go for weeks after you finish reading it.
The American CEO of the New Shanghai-New York Bank falls into a mud pit full of the mutilated bodies of young woman. Li Yan is tapped to head the case and he insists on having his old flame, American pathologist Margaret Campbell, on his team. However, Margaret finds that good looking police detective Mei-Ling, the deputy head of Shanghai's serious crime squad, has set her sights on capturing more than the serial killer. It appears that she's got plans on capturing the heart of Li as well.
Margaret wonders how she as a "foreign devil" can compete with Mei-Ling, but she has to put personal feelings aside as the three try to uncover the identities of the murder victims and catch a grisly killer who apparently subjected his victims to live autopsies. And as they close in on the killer they also close in on their own personal demons.
This is the third in Mr. Mays excellent China series and is every bit as wonderful as the two that came before and the two that follow. If you can get a hold of his work here in America, I'm here to tell you that it's well worth the effort. You won't be disappointed. I can hardly wait till the next one is released.

Fluffy Arthurian love story.......2006-07-25
This book was a disappointment mainly because, being a lifelong fan, I was looking forwards to some pleasant hours spent with Gawain and Ragnell, with some quests, magic/holy objects, and misty forests thrown in. Although fairly well-written, this book fails on two accounts.
The first is that, like so many modern novels, it fails to light up its pages with real suspense: The characters are so normal as to be bland; the life-and-death scenarios are staid, sluggish affairs; and there is absolutely nothing about the book to set a pulse racing. It's interesting, but only enough so to keep you reading. The characters are so true to life that, bereft of their epic dignity, there is nothing left but an amiable pair of young people, of unprecedented mediocrity.
The one thing that saved this novel from oblivion and kept me from forgetting that it ever existed was its second problem: the way in which it treated Arthurian legend. Excising as much of the Christian ideology as possible, it ended up with no soul except for some neo-pagan mumbo jumbo. Excising a good deal of the masculine warrior tradition of the legends, it ended up with no spine and the consistency of a jelly. Excising all medieval culture, its beauty and its fervour, it ended up with no heart, and instead began to sound like a model office--an extremely civilised place where everyone speaks in low voices and everything is calm and restrained.
The author tried to keep from having her villainess, Morgaine, too villainous. One gets the impression of a nice young single mum who directs her minions in world domination on her weekends off, for a reason which is, quite simply, never explained.
But Zettel's cardinal sin is the treatment of Sir Gawain. You can either have the extremely virtuous and wise--if headstrong, rash, and hot-headed--Gawain of the Middle English poems from which Zettel took much of her story; or you can have the vile lecher of Thomas Mallory's Morte D'Arthur. Trying to meld the two together could have been an interesting move in the interests of character conflict. Zettel, however, takes the rake!Gawain and drops him into the virtuous!Gawain stories. This causes a great many hiccups in characterisation, and eventually in story development, where the entire original meaning of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is lost, and ninety percent of The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell. To those of us who only picked up the book because we wanted to read about the marriage of Sir Gawain to a horrifically ugly lady who subsequently turned into a beauty when he kissed her, this books was a complete disappointment.
However, it is to the book's credit that despite its inadequacies, it's quite a serviceable piece of fantasy fiction. It isn't about the character we wanted to hear about. It doesn't tell the story we wanted to hear. It doesn't even tell the kind of story we wanted to hear. Instead, it disguises modern people as Arthurian knights and ladies and tells a fluffy, inconsequential tale of their adventures. Good for an idle hour, but not much more.
Spin me a web..........2004-10-26
I've been reading Arthurian fantasy for years, and was fairly sick of it to be honest. The story seemed to be told in every way imaginable already.
Zettel's story, however, focuses more on lesser known characters and she spins her own tale (irregardless of all the 'rules') and makes a pretty decent story.
If you are an Arthurian fanatic (as I once was) and you are going to be disturbed by every bent rule or fact, pass on this book. If you'd just like to read a good story/romance based in this era, pick this one up!
Risa, the heroine, is a strong willed woman who fights against society and culture and can hold her own in a fight. Gawain is a true honorable knight...imperfect, but seeking to be the best man possible.
The magic of the book is more of the 'old ways', close to nature and fairly druid-like.
I enjoyed the story and look forward to the next!
A Nice Twist.......2004-08-16
To Begin with, it is true that many details in this book will disagree with "Le Morte d'Arthur" but frankly, after countless books and movies on the subject, I think we're all ready for a change.
One of the best things about this book is that it doesn't focus on one of the well-known characters of the Arthurian legends. True, the name Gawain is known, but he has always been in Lancelot's Shadow. And while the book's protagonist, Risa, will undoubhtedly have no effect on the eventual downfall of Camelot, it is interesting to read her story with the background of Camelot.
I also found Zettel did a good job in making her characters seem believable (mostly). I liked Gawain as a somewhat arrogant ladies man, and Sir Kay added some disruptance to the Arthurian court with his brutal wit. Euberacon was simply villanous, but at least his thoughts were divided between finding Risa and seeking revenge.
This story is a compelling read, with a somewhat cliched ending and an obvious setup for future Camelot novels. It is not really thought provoking, but an excellent way to spend an afternoon and see Camelot from a different perspective.
It rankled.......2004-07-27
I'll not go into the tedious details of how it is in no way historically accurate (because it isn't) and I'll also skip all the differences between it and Sir Gawain. Anyone with even a mediocre education should be able to see that it mangled one of the best Arthurian legends into a travesty.
Aside from all of that, it was entirely predictalbe and full of stereotypes.
A Grand Adventure.......2004-07-20
In Camelot's Shadow by Sara Zettel is a must read by anyone who is fan of fantasy, particularly of well done Arthurian fantasy. The story embodies the richness and depth of elements of story quintessential to Arthurian myth telling, and captures the majesty and the edginess of that particular medieval fantasy setting. There is a sense of being swept away the minute you start reading, and once you are caught you can't seem to let go.
The story told here is of a young noble lass, Lady Risa, who is betrothed at birth to a man of magic and dark secrets, and begins with her desire to escape a destiny not of her choosing. At first you see a spoiled but spirited woman-child, but as the tale spins on, she is confronted with test upon test that, in a very short time period, build her mettle and help her to develop into a powerful, self-aware woman who faces fear to protect what she loves most and willingly gives of herself that others may endure. She is accompanied by a hero who must also face his weaknesses and test the truth of his love against the follies and faults of his past, and this is done not only through the main story and his connection to Lady Risa, but, a challenge of his own he must tackle. There are multiple capable villains, with many agendas who work with and against one another at every turn, keeping you in suspense page by page until the very end. There is also a version of the Sir Gawain and the Green Knight myth that will leave you on the edge of your seat!
This is the gritty side of the British Isles and Camelot, the one where the old ways lurk deep in the dark wood, and danger is at every turn, where Saxons raid, and mages plot, and even the knights of the table round have an edge to them as sharp as a ready sword.
And Sara Zettel takes no prisoners with this tale she tells. Her command of the legends of the age mix well with her skill at creating vivid, real characters the reader can feel. Her ability to capture description, especially that of the fantastic and magical make you believe you've traveled back in time and myth as you read.
Let yourself be lost to the days of yore, let yourself be lost to this incredible voyage of Lady Risa and her Knight Gawain, let yourself be lost to In Camelot's Shadow and the magic of Sara Zettel.
And worry not, dear reader, for a sequel does come, and trust me, after this book, you'll be wanting more!

Truan's Story Book Four In The Series!.......2003-01-26
I liked this book very much! This is Truan's story. We met him in book four and now he has is own story. Truan is the son of Merlin and he feels that there is no way he can love due to the fact that he is half mortal.
Amber (we met her in previous books as well) has suffered greatly and is unable to speak. She is drawn to Traun the 'fool' and jokster. Truan despite his best attempts also finds himself drawn to the the silent beauty. The darkness manages to get a hold of Amber and takes her back to the time of Aruthr. When Camelot was more then just a legend! Here Amber is able to speak and laugh and finds herself with no memory of Truan but is drawn to him just the same. The battle of good and evil is fought yet again in this magical place and love blooms for both Truan and Amber.
This was a great read and worthy of being part of the this romantic series.

GREAT STORY ABOUT MERLIN'S CHILDREN. GO AND BUY THIS BOOK!
HELLLLLLPPPPPPPPP!.......2002-09-26
Warning, warning, this is a (gulp) romance novel. I have in the past vowed never never to read a romance novel. As a retired history teacher and an author and a student of Arthurian legend I picked up the first in the series and was hooked. The historical context is excellent. Then by the second one I realized that the love scenes were pretty much the same thing over and over. (The cover pictures should have alerted me.) By the third I began to skip the sex scenes and go for the story. Hey, I'm a happily married man with children and grandchildren. I know obviously many people go for this sort of thing as bookshelves are full of them. I promise I am not a snob nor am I knocking those who want this sort of thing. But seriously Ms. Evans you have the talent to write interesting, entertaining best sellers by sticking to story development. Our imagination can fill in the rest. I'm of the generation when you could see two lovers, a bed, and then just a curtain blowing in the breeze with musical background and know all that was going on. I give this book five stars for a historical novel that could have been the best and only one for the bosom heaving scenes. That unfortunately is an average of three. As I used to write on some student papers, "C, You can do much better work than this. I have faith in you."
The stunning series continues!!.......2002-01-29
Book 4 - Truan of Monroe was raised as an orphan on the Isle in the Irish Sea, a deadly warrior and a sorcerer of great powers. Also, the son of Merlin, he must pass through a doorway, back in time to the days of Camelot, where Merlin has been banished for all time. Amber follows him, unwilling to lose him, standing at Truan side as he finishes the battle with Malagraine.
Quinn Taylor Evan is a must!!
EXCELLENT SERIES.......2000-09-29
THIS SERIES"MERLINS LEGACY"HAD ME HOOKED FROM THE 1ST PAGE IN BOOK 1.YOU FELT LIKE YOU WERE RIGHT ALONG WITH THE CHARACTERS ,THE DESCRIPTIONS WERE SO REAL.I LIKED THE FACT THAT THE FIGHT AGAINST THE DARKNESS DIDNT OVERSHADOW THE ROMANCE.IT WAS ONLY AT THE END OF THE BOOK THAT THE DARKNESS BATTLED THE LIGHTT.
AMBER AND TRUAN WERE GREAT CHARACTERS.YES,AMBER WASNT AS TOUGH AS VIVIAN AND CASSANDRA BUT IF THEY ALL ACTED THE SAME THE BOOKS WOULDNT HAVE BEEN THAT GOOD.AMBER WENT THROUGH A HORIFIC ORDEAL SO SHE HID IN HERSELF.SHE COULDNT SPEAK AFTER WHAT SHE SEEN HAPPEN TO HER FAMILY.I LIKED THAT TRUAN WAS ALWAYS JOKING AROUND.I LOVED HIM IN BOOOK 3.IME GLAD HIM AND AMBER GOT THEIR OWN STORY.AND IT WAS GREAT THAT TRUAN TURNED OUT TO BE MERLINS SECRET SON.I CANT WAAIT UNTIL THE NEXT BOOK ABOUT MEG.
THIS IS DEFINATELY A SERIES THAT WOULD BE A KEEPER.ONE OF THE ONES THAT YOU HAVE TO TAKE OUT EVERY SO OFTEN TO REREAD.ENJOY!!!1

On the edge of my seat!.......2004-11-01
This book was intense. I found myself unable to sleep at night. The thought of "Just one more chapter..." plagued several evenings resulting in many late nights. I have just ordered "Plague at Redhook" in hopes that it will be equally as enthralling.
A vast improvement over "Plague at Redhook".......2004-10-02
This book contains better developed characters, more believable science (to be expected in a prequel, and an amazing twist ending. While Mr. Cobb still hasn't mored this series up with the greats, I think that it's on it's way. If his rate of improvement continues this way I expect him to be right up there with Brin, and Clarke by boook four or five.
BTW, some people may note some superficial similarities between this book and David Brin's "Sundiver" (diving into the Sun, a feeling of "Mystery in space"), I actually contacted him about this to see if it was a source of inspiration, and was informed he had never even heard of "Sundiver".
Thank you Stephen Cobb.......2004-09-23
What can I say but Thank You Steve Cobb!! I'm definitely a great lover of scifi and fantasy books and I've read tons of stories over the years. I especially like finding an author who can deliver some original story and plot lines to keep me interested. Mr. Cobb has done just that!!! From the get go he had my attention. The interesting plot twists kept me guessing, and above all, unlike some authors who merely make up there own technology or "science", Cobb seems to keep the story on a level of believeability that I find fairly nice in a scifi novel. As other reviews have gone over the synopsis of the story I won't expand on those but I will say that you deffinitely won't get bored with Bones Burnt Black.
All in all the book was a Great read and I recommend it.
Great Sci-Fi Novel!!!.......2004-09-16
This Review is from my wife, Leila:
Bones Burnt Black by Stephen Euin Cobb opens with an adrift crewman's view of a major catastrophe. Her spaceship, the mortally wounded Corvus, has suffered an unexplained explosion, and tumbles end over end through the icy depths of space. Inside the ship, the survivors are subjected to intense inverted gee forces and a myrid of other dangers. As if that were not bad enough, it is soon determined by the handful of survivors that the Corvus' new trajectory will cause her to pass dangerously close to the Sun, bringing flaming death and destruction for all aboard.
Immediately the reader is swept up in the desperate life and death struggle as each new challenge presents to the various survivors. Yet another shock is in store for those marooned on the doomed vessel: the cause of Corvus' damage is determined to be the result of sabotage. Then, almost unbelievably, one by one the battered survivors are found brutally murdered. Why, in the face of such calamity, are these cold-blooded acts being committed? Is there a connection to the sabotage? Who is responsible? Time is running out to find these answers as the Sun looms closer and closer.
This story is very realistic in both plot and delivery. The author's treatment of the human element, in terms of action and reaction, rings true. Suspension of disbelief is almost unnecessary. There is no magical ray gun or high tech device to get these characters out of their situations. Survival is by human intellect and timely action, as it is for any disaster. The survival situations that the characters face are not contrived. The twists and turns in the plot are made more compelling by this realism, not only from the human nature perspective, but also from a scientific point of view. This work is science fiction based squarely upon science fact.
The book held my attention and when I had to put it down, I couldn't wait to pick it back up. Two other thoughts on the basic storyline also come to mind: how too easily insanity hides itself in human society and "Vengeance is a dish best served cold," per the old Klingon proverb. The mysteries that unfold within the pages of Bones Burnt Black are not transparent to the reader and their resolution is hard won by the characters.
I enjoyed this book. I recommend it highly!

Very happy with my purchase.......2007-07-07
For the Chicken Basil-Blue Pasta alone, you should buy this book. It's one of my favorite things I've ever eaten. Yum-O!
As with most cookbooks, there are some recipes I like and some I don't. Overall, it's definitely worth it. Don't try just one recipe and then never use it again. Try to pick recipes that include ingredients you know you like, and try those first.
returned.......2007-04-13
i returned it because the recipes weren't very original or enticing, it was written in this odd, cutesy tone and for those who care, there weren't very many pictures. it was overall a let down. as far as cooking for 2, i recommend EatingWell serves two.
Great resource for small families.......2006-09-26
I have been inspired by this book to perform an activity that has intimidated me for years - cook. Even the cullinarily challenged can make these meals! The format is also well done, listing the equipment needed for each recipe, and it includes mix and match charts for everyday favorites. Most of all, I love that the meals are relatively quick and incorporate fresh ingredients. The lack of leftovers is fantastic for us, since we just can't get excited about eating them. Of the 3 "Cooking for Two" books I purchased, this one is by far the best
Amazing and wonderful bood.......2005-01-25
I can not say enough wonderful things about this book. The recipes are easy, quick and most of all execellent. I have hidden this book from my husband who likes to cook and often thinks he is a better cook than me. With this book as my "secret weapon" I have been able to impress the pants off of him. I have not found a bad recipe yet. The portions are smaller than most recipes, and the tips throughout the book are witty and fun and a perfect compliment to this book. I would highly recommend this to everyone- and am buying it for my mother-in-law as my husband has even raved to her about these recipes!! That alone is good enough for me to know the book is wonderful!
A standard resource in my kitchen.......2005-01-13
I really do enjoy this little cookbook. While not as comprehensive or big as several others I own, I appreciate the fact that many (not all) of the recipes are sized for a small number of portions. Many recipes can be halved rather easily. I love the chocolate chip cookies (which are the standard Nestle tollhouse recipe with a few key changes) and the garlic mushroom marinara sauce, especially with the optional olives added to it. Overall I think this is a good cookbook. I have yet to make anything in it I didn't like.
