Killing at its Best!!.......2007-09-27

I loved this book. I had not read a book in years. Not until my wife kept talking about this book, and eventually going out and buying all of the Lisa Gardner books. My wife insisted that I read the book. Well, as you can see, I picked up the book and simply could not put it down. Next thing I know, I'm taking my wife's other Lisa Gardner books and reading those as well.

This is a great read. If you really like a suspenseful thriller, you certainly will enjoy this book.

Lisa Gardner sold her first novel when she was just 20 years old. In 1993 she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in international relations. She lives in New Hampshire.

One of my favorites!.......2007-06-17

I love murder mystery novels and this is by far one of my favorites!! Ms. Gardner wrote a fabulous, suspenseful novel that keeps you turning the pages. I read the book in under a day and as excited as I was to read it, I was bummed that I had finished it so quick! :) I definately would recommend this text.

Boring detail.......2007-03-18

The only thing that prevented my stopping at about page 70 was the story line. I wanted to find out how it ends. But it was hard slogging having to read every detail of what biologists, geologists and -ologists one has never heard of have to say about their fields. I think the author is much too proud of the fact that she does research and wants the reader to be impressed.

A dynamite book!.......2007-03-14

I love this book and recommend it to all those who love a good crime novel. The characters are interesting and solid and the plot has lots of good twists. Several people I have recommended this book to have loved it as well and are now reading more Lisa Gardner novels. Start it and it will keep you up all night until you are finished. Great mystery!

I just received this edition and was pleasantly surprised to find that it includes Book 4 "Swords against Wizardry." As for content, the Fafhrd/Gray Mouser series is fantasy at its best.

Great Fafhrd & The Gray Mouser Stories.......2001-02-20

Leiber's sword books stand alone in heroic fantasy for their gallows humor, perverse plots, and decadent settings. He treats his heroes with a respect, compassion, and maturity not common in fantasy or horror writing.

This books of stories includes material written in the 1940's to 1960's. In addition to the famous "Lean Times in Lankhmar" - the story of Issek of the Jug's rise on the Street of the Gods - and "Adept's Gambit" - where the heroes come to the Macedonian empire on our Earth, the book includes "The Cloud of Hate", "When the Sea-King's Away", and a pair of short-shorts written as segueways between the previously published stories.

Good reading.......1999-11-30

It's a shame that these Leiber books are out of print. They're well-written and exciting. Reading these I felt the same excitement I had reading Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories in that once you're done with a story..you get to start another one all over again.

For years I have been a devout Clancy fan. I firmly belived that no one could come close to matching Clancy's uncanny ability to capture the military-technothriller. Timothy Rizzi's Strike of the Cobra changed all that. Rizzi captured all the nessicary details and information required to make the pages fly and you feel like you are there. Rizzi describes everything down to the number of G's a pilot is feeling as he throws his F-15E into a tight vertical climb to avoid the SAM locked onto his tailfire. Rizzi does not waste ink on useless information. Every word propels the plot to the stunning climatic areial fighter battle. The charactors have depth and realisim. You can identify with them. They have personality. Rizzi has created a masterful novel. This one is worth the read!

Strike of the Cobra Unspectacular But Solid.......1999-10-06

In the same vein as Tom Clancy, Stephen Coonts, et al, Timothy Rizzi creates a viable, if a little far-fetched, technothriller scenario...Though stock characters populate this book, Rizzi does a fine job with the technical end, especially the aerial dogfighting and the covert ground ops...The last hundred pages dragged a little, but again, that's forgivable, because suspense and action are so hard to sustain over almost 500 pages...

There's nothing spectacular here, but die-hard technothriller fans will find solid, honest reading...

Sake Unmasked.......2007-04-11

John Gauntner's "Sake Handbook" is the perfect guide to those who want to explore the art and science of sake. I feel more confident when I am choosing sake for a gift or for my own entertaining. A 'must' for those that want to expand their knowledge of sake.

This book is excellent. It's main sections on How Sake is Made, Drinking and Where to Buy are very detailed. Most of the terminology will be new to those unfamiliar with sake, the author takes the time to explain them in detail. There is the history, the people and some of the ritual of sake as well.

With each of the sake detailed, the author provides tasting notes and information about other sakes from the same brewer.

As a side note of the detail of the book, one of my Japanese friend's found her favourite sake in the book. I went to my local bottle shop with the book, pointed to the picture of the label and found we found it, leading to a night of entertaining drinking.

Ah, sake. This rice wine has been around for thousands of years, and is part of many traditions in Japan. As Japanese food styles have become popular across the globe, so has this fine drink, which can be served both warm and cold. To learn more about the history of sake, and to learn how to choose a good brand, this book is invaluable.

To start with, The Sake Handbook goes over each step involved in making sake. Reading through the intricate processes involved helps you understand why there are so many varieties of sake, and why each one has a different flavor. One key step, for example, is the polishing step. The inner part of the rice generally is of higher quality than the outer portion, so the more 'extra' that is polished away, the finer the sake.

Next, Gauntner goes over the various types of sake, and how each is unique. Some of these terms are:

* Junmai-shu is pure rice sake. Only rice, water, and the koji mold are used to produce this top level sake. It ends up tasting heavier and fuller than other types of sake. It uses less than 70% polished rice - this means they have `ground away' the other 30% of impurities.

* Honjozo-shu has a small amount of distilled ethyl alcohol added during the final stages. They then add water later so the alcohol content stays the same. This sake is lighter and dryer than other types. It can be served warm.

* Ginjo-shu uses 60% polished rice. It is also fermented for longer periods of time, giving a complex and delicate flavor.

* Daiginjo-shu is just like Ginjo-shu, but polished to 50% of the original size. It takes even longer to brew and complete. Futsuu-shu - any sake which does not fall into one of the above four categories.

Gauntner describes how sake is tasted, and how an individual can learn to distinguish between various sakes, and figure out the 'type' best suited for his or her palate. To help with this, the entire second half of the book is dedicated to a brand-by-brand evaluation of the best sakes on the market. This is invaluable! No matter if you're in Tokyo or Chicago, you can bring this book in with you to a store or restaurant and compare with ease the various sakes available.

There even is a section towards the back listing the best sake restaurants in Japan. If you're going on a trip to Japan, bring this book along, and know what to order and any special rules about each location.

John really knows his stuff. I live in Tokyo and I run a Liquor shop here. I have studied for years about sake and I go once a year to make sake at a friends family brewery. I got so much insight and new information from John's wonderful book that I only wish he'd written it five years ago! If you already have several books on sake, this is a must to add to your collection, if this is the first book on sake that your going to buy, consider your self lucky that such an informitive and well written book is around to buy.
