Book Description
Old Joseph Joe sees it all. Two strangers spill blood at the Shiprock Wash-O-Mat. One dies. The other drives off into the dry lands of the Big Reservation, but not before he shows the old Navajo a photo of the man he seeks.
This is all Tribal Policeman Jim Chee needs to set him off on an odyssey that moves from a trapped ghost in an Indian hogan to the seedy underbelly of L.A. to an ancient healing ceremony where death is the cure, and into the dark heart of murder and revenge.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent - as most Hillerman books are.......2004-09-01
I've read all of the Hillerman mysteries, but its been several years so now I'm listening to a few on tape as I drive to work. The "on tape" version is quite excellent. It is read (really it would be better to say 'performed') by Gil Silverbird, a Navajo actor and singer. He does an excellent job - the differences between Chee's conversations and interviews with Whites and Navajos become very obvious as Silverbird performs them. It adds yet another layer of cultural experience to the Hillerman books.
Shoot out at the Wash-O-Mat.......2004-05-30
A Shoot out at the Shiprock Wash-O-Mat leads to a puzzle that only Jim Chee with his knolage of the Gostway and of death rituals can try to peace together. Related is a disappearance of a school girl (Margaret Sosi) will lead Jim from the New Mexico landscape to the Los Angeles area. There with Hillerman's gift for description we also get a contrasting look of the different worlds. Will He find the girl and what does the puzzle spell out, or will it ever become clear?
This is a close continuation of "People of Darkness" so many of the descriptions and people were previously defined in that book. The reason people read Hillerman is mostly for the descriptions of the places and people his characters encounter. As seen in previous books, in the description of Margaret and other characters, he incorporates his real life experience with World War II and it's aftermath.
Great book!.......2004-02-11
This is one of the better books in Hillerman's series. We learn more about Jim Chee's life progress in the context of a murder mystery, which is neither too complex, nor too simplistic. Hillerman throws in the Navajo history, lore and lifestyle without preaching, or assuming knowledge on the part of the reader. In a neat touch, we learn an awful lot about Mary Landon without her actually appearing here as character: she's there in Jim's memory, in phone calls, and in a letter she sends Jim.
Well worth reading!
Jim Chee -- between White and Indian.......2002-12-20
This is the sixth of Hillerman's "Navajo Detective" series and the third in which Jim Chee is the main character. In "Ghostway" Hillerman explores the conflict of a Navajo drawn to the White world. Jim Chee is in love with a White school teacher, Mary Landon, and he contemplates marrying her and leaving the reservation to take a job as an FBI agent. But he is also pulled in the opposite direction to become a "singer" and preserve the Navajo ceremonies that are being forgotten as the old timers die off. Chee's preoccupation with the personal choices he must make are always near the surface of this mystery novel.
Hillerman, as always, celebrates the magnificience of the Navajo land and the Navajo's sensitivity to their natural surroundings. And, as always, the knowledge of their land and people give Hillerman's detectives the insight they need to solve the mystery.
"Ghostway" begins with a shootout in the parking lot of a laundromat in Shiprock, New Mexico that leaves two men dead. The story is not one of Hillerman's best or most credible but the character of Margaret Sosi, an entrancing, 15-year old girl wearing a black pea coat makes up for plot deficiencies. We want this girl to live -- but Hillerman readers know he has cruelly killed off children in other novels in the series.
Hillerman novels contain no sex whatsoever, but "Ghostway" comes closer than about any other to intimating that Jim Chee and Mary Landon might have engaged in something more than romantic conversation.
Pretty good book - easy read.......2001-08-30
Not my favorite Hillerman book, but still pretty interesting and entertaining. Won't hurt anyone to read something like this just for fun!

Three powerful mysteries are compiled in one volume, all featuring Navajo Tribal Policeman Jim Chee. People of Darkness asks questions of cultural identity and tribal beliefs. Set in the southwestern Bad Country, a bloodthirsty assassin waits to prevent the revelation of 30-year-old secrets. The Dark Wind is filled with Navajo sorcery and white man's greed. After Chee is barred from following up on a multimillion-dollar drug case, he discovers that a vandalism incident and a murder may be tied to the case. The Ghostway includes a healing ceremony whose cure could be death. Follow an odyssey of murder and revenge that moves from a traditional Navajo dwelling to contemporary Los Angeles.

Three Jim Chee Mysteries.......2004-09-22
"People of Darkness"
"The mole, his hunting place is darkness."
"The mole, his hunting song is silence."
Sgt Jim Chee of the Navaho tribal police is asked by the wife of Benjamin J. Vines to retrieve a mysterious box stolen from her husband's safe while he was away. When mister vines returns he tells Chee that it was all a mistake and hands Chee a check. We all know Chee can not let this lay still so the mystery leads him to people that use a mole for their talisman "The people of Darkness" and it appears that something (or someone) is killing them all off.
The mystery is fair and Tony Hillerman does not hide clues or surprise suspects to the last minute so it is not too hard to guess most of the plot or who the good guys and bad guys are. We are introduced to the Navaho concept of witches and Mary Landon who will play parts (if she survives) in future novels. In the process we get a vivid description of the four corners and other areas near buy. In People of darkness he picks up a Lota Burger and I have eaten a few of them my self. In future books we will be introduced to the Navaho Taco. For the anthropologist in us he describes many sings and ways.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The Dark Wind"
"A dark wind has entered his soul"
"Enemies unseen... Fears unspoken...... A dark wind has entered his soul"
Navajo Tribal Police Sgt. Jim Chee seems to be batting zero; so far he has not been able to solve a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. In an area that was joint use land between the Navaho and the Hopi (now Hopi) Sgt Jim Chee is given the task of finding the vandal that keeps destroying a windmill placed there to make Hopi life easer. He hears an airplane landing in the dark of night with no lights. The plane crashes and leaves a dying pilot. Also a dead man sitting up against a rock with a note in his hand saying if you want it back contact...
Sgt Chee is told that it is probably drugs and federal jurisdiction. Chee is not supposed to go anywhere near or have anything to do with the case. He has his own problems with the mill, a missing thief, and a mysterious ritual death. Naturally he listens, and can not help it if they overlap.
One of the reasons for reading Hillerman's books maybe more important than the overlying mystery is the descriptions of the area and the Ways of the Navaho and Hopi. Hillerman suggests you also read "The Book of the Hopi" by Frank Waters.
Not as intricate as the book but still fun is the movie "Dark Wind" (Lou Diamond Phillips as Officer Jim Chee, Fred Ward as Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn)

"The Ghostway"
Shoot out at the Wash-O-Mat
A Shoot out at the Shiprock Wash-O-Mat leads to a puzzle that only Jim Chee with his knowledge of the Ghostway and of death rituals can try to peace together.
As seen in previous books, in the description of Margaret and other characters, he incorporates his real life experience with World War II and its aftermath.
I've read about everything Hillerman has written........1998-07-05
I've read about everything Hillerman has written, and listened to most of his recorded Books on Tape. I'm an ex-Peace Corps Volunteer and appreciate his fascination and his realistic approach to this original American culture.
Hillerman creates the perfect '90s hunk in Jim Chee........1998-04-09
Tony Hillerman writes great mysteries with complex characters and beautiful descriptions of Navajo country. But when he came up with Navajo police officer Jim Chee, he created the perfect '90s man. Chee is gentle, spiritual, strong, mostly silent, and smart. Plus, he recognizes his own failings--and tries to become a better man. Whew! Who could ask for anything more?
In this book of three earlier Jim Chee mysteries we get the best of Hillerman and a nice dose of all the things he's rightly famous for. There are insights into Native American culture, beautiful descriptions of the Southwest, intriguing mysteries and even a little love story.
When Jim Chee falls in love with Mary Landon, a Wisconsin school teacher who wants him to leave the reservation and work for the FBI, two of the mysteries allow us to follow the development of that relationship as Hillerman explores the difficulties of a cross-cultural relationship. Chee's struggle with his personal life gives a great deal of texture to the mysteries, and his efforts to be both a Navajo singer and a policeman create tension between his personal and professional duties.
Of course, the best part of these mysteries is Hillerman's marvelous grasp of character and place. Open this book and you'll lose yourself on the Navajo reservation with as interesting a group of people as you'll ever wish to meet in real life. Especially that Jim Chee character!
Fast paced mysteries with glimpses into Dinetah.......1998-04-08
Hillerman, a former newspaperman, spend many, many years in the Southwest, and his novels are set in a land he knows very well. From the mesas to the Chinle Wash these three novels exude the bold topography of the Navajo Nation.
Jim Chee is a member of the Tribal Police, struggling with one foot in the ancient tradions of his born-to and born-for clans while trying to assimilate modern mores. His on-again off-again love is Janet, a spirited Native American lawyer, whose thoroughly modern stance clashes with his ambiguous identity.
Through Jim Chee we experience glimpses into Dinetah, the land, and culture of a fascinating people. The brushstrokes that create this world are deft, with a pyschological appreciation for each character. Hillerman creates a world for all senses to enjoy.
Two stories are set in the Navajo Nation, while one begins there and travels to Los Angeles, CA. Layers upon layers unravel, as Chee investigates seemingly random and unrelated bits. I especially appreciate the culture interwoven into the story line, yet never felt this done in a heavy-handed way.
Each novel is a jewel, each with it's own merits. Villians may be expected, or nearly the last person you suspect, but you'll have your consciousness raised while loving every minute of these tales. Atmospheric, sensitive and compelling Hillerman with have you longing for a trip to this world.
I think it's especially telling that the author has been given the highest honor that can be bestowed on a non-tribal member: Friend of the Navajo People. The Dineh appreciate dry humor, and while Hillerman never creates sterotypes, he gently lampoons instead of deifying. Once you enter THIS land of enchantment you will clambor for more from this splendid storyteller and outdoorsman.

Shoot out at the Wash-O-Mat.......2005-07-28
Just a note that Hillerman is a great storyteller and it is great to hear the story directly from him. The only drawback is that this is an abridged version and it is imperative to her every word on these stories as the descriptions are as much of the Hillerman charm as the mystery. So if you must listen them also read the book afterwards.

Good story, but the songs are the best part!.......1998-07-05
"No Earthly Sunne" is really a good book. One of the best parts about it is the combination of songs with the plot. I found that I was looking forward to the next song.
You may recognize the songs from other places, as I did, but mostly they're beautiful poetry that touches your heart.
The most amazing part of the book is the end, no not the end of the story, the end of the book in which Margaret Ball tells the reader about the songs and where they actually came from. It's kind of a compendium of all the songs.
If you're looking for some great imagery of Diana with a lot of mythological background attatched, this is your best bet, in the songs.
A really good book.......1998-02-24
This book has a rather slow beginning, but picks up soon after. And is it worth reading! The storyline is great, the people are believeble, and the fantasy aspect is neatly woven in. A worthwille read!
Dead Forms and New Technology.......1997-05-05
Ball uses the vanished form of the masque as Kit Arundel's vehicle for combining the spheres of mortal world and Faerie. Borrowing verse from masters such as Ben Jonson and Campion, she recreates a lavish court spectacle including singing, dances, speeches, and allegory. The court masque was a demonstration of princes and courtiers, who played the chief parts. It praised the order and glory of an earthly reign by alluding to heavenly ones such as those of Jove and the Golden Age. The precision of the steps and verse was supposed to suggest harmony to the audience, who would later join in the dancing. Ball's choice of the masque as a mathematically exact form which brings the worlds together is appropriate.
Modern Ellen Ainsley is confused by memories of her past life as Eleanor Guilford, an Elizabethan woman engaged to the man known as Wicked Kit Arundel. Taking these memories as signs of madness, Ellen moves away from the music which brings them on and towards her career as a computer programmer, little realizing that the mathematical precision of both music and computer projections provides a gate to Faerie.
Ball interleaves episodes of Eleanor's life with Ellen's confusion, the faerie emissary's commissions from his queen, and Kit's attempts to follow Ellen's voice back to the real world. The characters mix practical disbelief with their magic. The writing is calm, not lofty, and the humor of certain situations is not forgotten, as when Kit finds himself at a Renaissance Faire in Texas or compared favorably to his own antique portrait. Those passages which necessarily contain Elizabethan dialogue are not overdone. Ellen's use of her laptop to convince a fey man about the relation of the real world to Faerie is particularly interesting in its suggestion, which is indeed that of the whole book, that modern science is not so far from the alchemical experiments of Elizabethans. The plot works well to convey this suggestion and to relate forgotten ideas to their modern equivalents and descendents.

Book 2 in The Asgard Trilogy
Stableford returns with Asgard's Conquerors, book two in his Asgard trilogy about a planet - and a man - like no other. After penetrating deep into the hollow planet of Asgard, Michael Rousseau wanted only to collect his payment for selling the location of the dropshaft and get as far away from the icy planet as possible. But instead he is captured by the Star Force, and is back under the command of Susarma Lear. Rousseau learns that Shychain city, the alien base established on Asgard's surface, has been invaded. As one of the few people with experience inside Asgard, Michael "volunteers" for a mission back into the heart of this new enemy to find a way to defeat them. But, when he's captured by the enemy, he is taken deeper into Asgard than any human has ever been. The question is whether he will survive to unlock even more of Asgard's secrets.
Brian Stableford lives in Reading, England, with his wife Jane, a holistic therapist.
Customer Reviews:
Reminiscent of Larry Niven's Ringworld Series.......2006-09-22
Asgard is a multi-level Dyson sphere in which the main character, Mike Rousseau, finds himself inexorably drawn towards the center of the artifact as well as the center of an eons long battle between software entities. Mike remains a wise-cracking, Voltaire-quoting reluctant hero throughout, saving the day only when no one else remains to do it. Unlike Larry Niven's Ringworld series, the Asgard trilogy does not discuss the technological aspects of the artifact much.
The first in the series, Asgard's Secret, is impossible to put down, after a somewhat slow start, with lots of action and well-defined characters. There are brief and interesting philosophical discussions on topics like the anthropic principle and convergent evolution. There is also an amusing discussion of the chicken and egg conundrum. None of these philosophical discussions takes much time away from the action. As I neared the end, I was glad I had bought all 3 in advance since I wanted to keep reading Mike's adventures.
The second novel, Asgard's Conquerors was not quite as good. Why is it that trilogy writers often seem to run out of steam? The novel didn't really bring the fascist regime of the conquerors to life. They seemed very one-dimensional, unlike the main characters, all of whom carry over from the first book. Book 2 still has enough action to keep you reading past your bedtime.
The third, Asgard's Heart, unfortunately became repetitive instead of creative, without adding significantly to any of the earlier philosophical discussions. Further, a major portion of the novel swapped back and forth between chapters of good hard science fiction action and chapters with very fantastic battles in virtual reality. Much too much like the fantasy genre for my taste.
I'm rating them 5, 4, and 3 stars, respectively.
A wonderful inner space opera .......2004-11-01
Asgard is a gigantic man-made artificial world consisting of many different levels each area containing habitats with their own eco-systems. Up until recently, nobody could get past level five, but Mike Rousseau was able to go to the lower levels using a guide book left to him by his friend. He opened up many of the levels and as a result became a very rich man. After spending a quarter of a century on Asgard, Mike wanted to see Earth but he was arrested and forced to join the Space Force.
No sooner does Mike leave Asgard than he returns as a draftee in the Space Force. The Scardia, invaders from the thirty levels, invade Shychain City, the base built on Asgard's surface. This angered the alien Tetrax who control the activities in and on Asgard. They know Mike knows more than anyone else about Asgard and they want him to spy for them. When he encounters the Scardia, he realizes they are technologically primitive and can't operate the machinery in Shychain city. When they capture Mike, he believes they will kill him but operatives of the Nine, another alien entity, rescue him in the hopes that he can broker a peace treaty between all the interested parties.
ASGARD'S CONQUERORS is a wonderful space opera only instead of battles fought in outer space, the war is taking place within an artifact that houses thousands of different worlds. Mike is a futuristic version of Indiana Jones, an explorer who seeks out the unknown. Brian Stableford has written a fantastic science fiction thriller reminiscent of Luke Skywalker meets Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Cooking for an Army?.......2006-09-27
I am not a vegetarian but I would like to become one. I bought this book because it offered balanced vegetarian breakfasts, lunches and dinners - just what I was looking for. However, the dinners are HUGE! Of course, a person does not have to cook every dish on the menu, and she does state that, but the whole reason I was drawn to this book was I wanted a book that would say, "Here eat this and you'll get all the nutrients you'll need as a vegetarian." I did not have a problem, as one reviewer did, with the idea that I would need ingredients from dinner, for example, for breakfast the next day. In fact I liked that idea. The first fall menu is: Miso Soup, Brown Rice, Aduki Beans, Sauteed Carrols, Onions and Squash and Cabbage Salad. Doesn't that sound great? For this meal, she writes that you will need TWO 2 or 3 quart covered pots, a 4-quart pressure cooker or 3-quart covered pot, plus a skillet or saucepan. Do you have, or usually need, that many pots? I don't. The next day after cooking this dinner, you use the left-over rice for breakfast, the left-over aduki beans for a soup for lunch and the left-over sauteed carrots-onions-squash in a dish of fried rice with vegetables, also part of the lunch. I like that but I would have to make the lunch for the next dinner because I just don't have time to spend over a half hour cooking a lunch. I will screw up my courage eventually to try to see how I can use this book, perhaps even buy some more pots and whatever, but I wish someone had written a review warning me about the cooking vessels needed to do the menus as written. (Waffle iron needed for breakfast number three, by the way.)
different from what i expected..........2003-08-30
this book was not what i expected. it may be a very good book for those who cook or intend to cook 3 meals a day. But when i bought this book, i thought it was about making a full balanced meal at one time. this book is set up a bit differently. it gives instructions to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner all at once. the breakfast needs some bit of dinner leftovers, the dinner requires some part of lunch leftovers and the lunch needs some ingredient from the breakfast. So in order to make one meal, you have to make all 3 meals. so if you just want to come home and cook a single meal of dinner, then this book is not for that.
A Classic ... A good place to start.......2001-09-11
With this book, I started at the first fall menu and started cooking my way through it. It's been totally doable. The recipes are so simple and laid out with directions of what to do first, second etc. that preparing entire meals with dessert gets faster with time. (She includes a healthy dessert in most of them.) I have noticed a couple mismarkings that would've affected the whole dish if I hadn't caught them, and while some of the recipes are really wonderful, others are just plain yuck! (I know it's health food but sometimes it goes too far!) As for flavor, it's definitely on the side of the old "healthy" stuff. If you're looking for the creative haute-cuisine vegetarian/vegan stuff you can find today, this is not it. However, the meals make me feel good and satisfied. They are so balanced, I find I don't crave sweets afterwards. The suggestions for what to do with the leftovers are really useful. Also, if you are nervous (as I was) about using all of these strange ingredients, the directions are simple enough that you'll become a pro in no time. One more thing - my complexion has really improved since I started using this book.
Delicious and Hearty.......1999-12-10
This is an exceptional book for anyone new to vegetarian cooking and concerned about getting the nutrients that are necessary. The recipes are hearty and the meals are robust.
Whole Foods Meals Made The Smart Way.......1998-05-11
I recommend this book to anyone interested in macrobiotics, vegetarianism, and general healthy living. The book begins with the theories on why it is important that we eat organic, locally grown, natural foods. It explains how to choose your meals, what those "wierd" natural foods are that were unfamiliar to me before I read this book, and even how to set up your kitchen. The recipes make up the second half of the book. It is divided into winter, spring, summer, and fall with seven complete meal plans for each season. These meals are something you could actually make. Leftovers from dinner are combined or changed into something completely different for lunch and breakfast the next day. In the sidebars of each page are directions for how to prepare the complete meal in the proper order. For example, it might say 1. Cook rice. Go on to soup. 2. Chop vegetables. Go on to tofu. 3. Marinade tofu. Go on to etc. Then the complete recipes are listed on the main part of the page. All the recipes in this book are easily adaptable to your particular tastes. The only thing I don't like about it is there are a few recipes involving fish or eggs. I am a vegan, so I don't use either of these.
