This book scared the hell out of me!.......2007-09-02
Very well written! I love thrillers and this is the best that I've read so far. Anson desribes the accounts so vividly that I was disturbed for days after finishing the book. I would recommend this to anyone who isn't prone to nightmares.
[Un]Truely a Horror Story.......2007-08-22
I have actually only recently finished this book. I have to say that I stayed up until 3am last Snday morning reading it. I couldn't put it down!
Although, as far as I can remember, this story has been disproven, I still found it a scary read and somewhere in the back of my mind there was a part of me that kept telling me it was real.
In part I put that down to the author, who relates the story in such a way that it is completely believable. His prose style is such that it adds a air of "menace" to the story which leaves the reader wanting to know what happened.
If you've seen the film(s) and think you know the story, think again. the films do not do the story justice and there are more scares in the book that in the films.
If you have an interest in the "goings-on" at 112 Ocean Avenue, then buy this book and read. It may not change your mind, but it's an entertaining read, none the less.
AGAIN THE HORROR BOOK OF A LIFETIME!!!.......2007-08-17
If you think you have heard or learned all there is to this neverending true horror, YOU ARE WRONG!! This book will definately still scare the pants off of you and make you really wonder...are there really haunted houses & things that occur we do not understand?? I WOULD SAY YES!! READ..READ...READ!!
Sure it's a work of fiction, but this first visit to Long Island is scary!.......2007-08-16
Other than some of the names and the house, this is one of the best "Hoax's" ever put before the American people. That said it is also one of the scariest ghost stories I have ever read.
The events start small and seem tame and easy to explain but as the days go on it terror and haunting become worse, as a young family moves into a house where a young man killed his whole family. A great novel by Jay Anson and remember, "It's all true"
A Tremendously Scary Read!.......2007-06-27
I first came across this book a LONG time ago when I was about 13 years old. A friend of mine was reading it and passed it along for me to read. Boy, was it SCARY!! Not horror-movie scary, but paranoid scary! Of course, at 13, who wouldn't be? We had a two-foot high ceramic owl statue in my house and I could barely stand to be alone in the same room with it.
I read the book at least 2 more times as an adult in my twenties. It was still as terrifying as it was when I was a kid. I think the author did a great job with the imagery. If someone told me about bleeding walls and levitations, I would just think it was gross or stupid, but this book is believable. Regardless whether or not it's true, it feels real when you're reading it and your imagination will run WILD!
I've been looking to purchase a copy for years and thought it was out of print, so here I am on Amazon placing an order.
Good luck reading this book--oh, and I would read it during the daytime hours!

Book Description
Was it horror or was it hoax? For years, the question went unanswered while everyone who ever glanced at the tabloids in a supermarket knew about the Amityville Horror-a house haunted by the remembered evil of mass murder. For 20 years, parapsychologist Stephen Kaplan and his wife, Roxanne, investigated the phenomenon keeping a detailed diary of everything that happened. This book is the result of that diary. Follow step-by-step and day-by-day as the Kaplans locate witnesses battle rival ghostbusters track down leads and attend an unlikely Halloween party at the Horror House. the result of all this effort? The Kaplans exposed a hoax that was almost as unnerving as the haunting itself. A real page-turner for anyone who is fascinated by things that go bump in the night!
Customer Reviews:
What Kind of People Still Believe in this case?.......2006-08-14
I must say it's kind of funny to find grown people who still believe in this nonsense. Just like all the crazies who believe in Bigfoot, UFO's, Loch Ness Monster, etc. It's pathetic that's someone (who might be a parent) believe, that ghost and spirits caused a man to murder his family. I bet any defense attorney would like a couple of these loons on the jury for the next murder trail. Just like the hosts of the T.V. show Ghost Hunters say:
" You find a lot of nut jobs in the field".
The Conspiracy.......2006-04-11
I did not think this book was as good as amityville but it was interesting to say the least.
Dr.Kaplan did have some very good points.
such as the red eyes seen looking in the window were the eyes of the cat that lived next door. and the front door that was ripped off was really the screen door that was blown off by a very strong thunderstorm that night. those are just some of the things Dr. Kaplan explains to us in this book. but what I do not understand is why Dr. Kaplan speaks about the Lutz family as if he really dislikes them so. other than telling their story whay did they do? this is a pretty good book but somthing happaned in that house!
lair!.......2005-04-29
well... you said you lived in that house with george and kathy for 5 months, eh?... Well its too bad that the Lutz only lived in that house for 28 days until they total abandoned it... just dont make up stupid stuff like that its not a hoax which is true... but dont lie to try to prove it.
Not a great Writer but a great researcher!.......2005-04-28
The Amityville Horror Conspiracy is highly recommended for anyone who wants to know alot more about the famous haunted house. Though Kaplan is not the greatest of writers (repeats himself alot, praises himself a little too much) he still uncovered a wealth of info on the "haunting". Written in diary form, Kaplans research is exhausting and he back up everything he says. Somwetimes it bogs down as he talks aboutnon Amityville related things it still keeps you interested. Kaplan shows in details the glaring inconsistencies in the the Amityville Book that were so bad they changed alot of the novel in between printings! For example, I bought a first printing of the "Amityville Horror" hardcover and then compard it to a later paperback edition. Huge differences! It is a very convincing read to say the least. After his death he has been attacked by everyone who claims the haunting was real and not a hoax. They claim he didnt hold a PHD which I guess turns out to be fact. They claim he was a "Vampirologist" and he used cocaine. The funny thing is all the people who bash Kaplan and his book do not debunk its info they just try to defame the author so no one will believe him. Well I believe him and I think you will too if you read the book. Do yourself a favor and draw your own conclusion!
The Creation Of A Haunted Cottage Industry........2005-04-16
Sorry, all you Demonologist wannabes but
Jodie can't come out to play.
From the outset, let me be clear:
Having an open mind and healthy curiosity, I must honestly admit
that I have a great deal of interest in and acceptance of a wide
range of paranormal phenomena. But this is not to say I am easily gullible.
Dr. Kaplan's book happens to remain the definitive history of
what is to every extent a hoax. That it was a clumsily
concocted hoax, there can be no doubt. That it was a hoax which
succeeded so surprisingly well there can be no doubt was due to an even more than usually insipid,
lazy and sensationalistic media that cooperated entirely.
"Journalists" who reported gossip almost verbatim in the furtherance of silly season news filler,
and interviews that rarely provided even a cursory challenge to credulity were the norm back then.
(And what else is new?)
This is a dry, detailed and exhaustive documentation of almost
every event subsequent to the Lutze/Anson deception which proved so
remarkably profitable to all involved. Prof. Kaplan deserves a
great deal of credit for his forebearance and dedication to the truth.
There are no cheap frights or pandering in this book, no scares other than in the way reality can
be so easily hidden.
Red eyed pigs do not haunt its pages.
What you will find is a rather twisted, amusing and depressing tale of mendacity,
wishful thinking and opportunism.
There are some personalities involved in this story who do not bear up very well
under the investigative light.
It only proves that P.T. Barnum was right about suckers.
The saddest part is that it all took such a toll on the investigator.
Prof. Kaplan's effort deserves to be appreciated.

The Amityville Borer.......2005-08-04
Frankly the only disturbing thing about this book is the idea that anyone actually thought it was real. The plot devices used were idiotic and ranged from marching bands to devilish pigs to MacGuffins like a moving statue. I know some of the band dorks in highschool can be pretty creepy but are they really horror material? And why drag poor innocent Babe into the melange of infantile horror props? Was swine flu not scary enough? What's next? A demonic icecream sundae whose cherry topping has "mysteriously" disappeared. Maybe the ghost of Ronald Defeo ate it.
If you are looking for a creepy book pick up "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson; don't waste 3 hours of your life on this one. Unless of course you are haunted by the dichotomy between books with moronic plots and excellent sales.
Move Out.......2005-04-15
The true horror is the fact that six brutal murders are largely overshadowed by one of the most shameless, cynical, and outright ridiculous hoaxes perpetrated by profiteers for decades.
Now back in print thanks to another cinematic remake, Anson's book is a nice hack job of stringing together the stories of George Lutz, unlucky homeowner who experienced a cavalcade of nightmares after moving into his Long Island home in the mid-70s. The family lasted only 28 days before leaving, so he says.
What's really amazing is that this whole business has been thoroughly debunked for years by countless sources, including the Lutzes, who even changed their stories.
Even if you actually believe that a house can become possessed, or that a red-eyed pig can spy on your house, or that the strange odors eminating from your house could be paranormal symptoms and not symptoms of bowel movements or a backed-up septic tank, the material here becomes downright laughable. I will give Anson credit for trying to dramatize the whole thing and create a spooky ghost story--after all, he was a hired writer, and he did his job all too well.
But really, the facade collapsed a long time ago. But that won't stop Mr. Lutz, who helpfully hosts a website, including a 'Store' section where you can buy merchandise. And the fact that a family has lived comfortably in the same house for years and years with no reports of Satan trying to toss them out of his digs seems to be no issue for the obviously cursed and now-divorced George Lutz. Who said real estate wasn't an evil business?
This whole shameless 'Horror' isn't funny anymore, and remaking a shoddy film for the new generation is downright sad, cynical, and of course, unnecessary. Yes, it's a horror.
One of a very few books that are actually frightening.......2004-10-23
I'll assume all the other reviews died on the vine and been deleted. It's been 25 years since it came out, for pete's sake.
At any rate, this is the scariest book I've ever read. And I don't scare easily. However, I was a teenager when I read it, so that probably has something to do with it.
I had a hard time sleeping that night. I couldn't shake feelings of dread for the next few days. The overpowering malice that pervaded the house and assualted those inside was palpable.
Anson, unfortunately, uses exclamation marks from time to time in his exposition. No writer worth his salt EVER uses exclamtion marks in his or her own writing. In the dialog, that's fine. But not in the writing. That's puerile. Which of the following two sentences is more powerful? 1) "Don't do that again." or 2) "Don't do that again!"
See what I'm saying?
And the event itself, was it a hoax? Probably. But that doesn't mean you won't want to leave the lights on all night after reading this. Problem is, with the lights on, when you wake up you'll be able to see the giant pig with glowing red eyes staring at you.

"Houses Don't Have Memories" THE TRUTH REVEALED!!!.......2004-10-04
Drug abuser and petty criminal who, in November 1974, shot his parents and four siblings to death at the family home in Amityville, N.Y. Suspected, but never charged, in the drowning death of another victim during 1972 (Not many people are aware of this fact!!!). Sentenced to life imprisonment despite a bizarre insanity defense. The DeFeo home has subsequently become the central object of novels and films in the "Amityville Horror" series, alleging that Ronald 'Butch' DeFeo was possessed by demons.
This book presents the DeFeo case from the prosecutor's point of view. Especially revealing in regard to the suspect's lame insanity defense.
I found the book to be of great interest to the student of criminology. If you are obsessed with the so called 'Amityville Horror' gibberish or are looking for ghosts, then look elsewhere, this book is definetely ***NOT*** for you. This is a 'serious readers' crime case study in line with Bugliosi's 'Helter Skelter'

an interesting veiw.......2005-09-11
I own almost all The Amityville Series both in video aswell as book format and I must say that Robin Karl actually took us away from The Lutz and DeFeo Families and added to the legend of The Amityville Horror a fine peice of fiction worthy of standing next to the Original aswell as Murders in Amityville and the Amityville Curse in my personal buy this book fine a nice spot and curl up and enjoy this well written strory.
Great Book!.......2005-03-30
I wasn't even born when the Amityville murders happened. I found this book on my bookself. It was one of my grandmother's. After I read it I asked everyone about Amityville. Now I am hooked. I want to read all the Amityville Books. It is very interesting. I couldn't put this book down. Don't read it to late at night, but do read it. I'm now going to purchase some other Amityville Books.
Not the true Amityville horror saga but still scarey!.......1999-06-04
If you are into the "The Amityville Horror" and all the evil and horror that "Amityville" holds then be prepared because this is fiction regarding the continuing saga of the infamous house however anyone who has followed the story knows another family moved in after the Lutz's left while this book claims it has been empty for awhile. So it may not be true but still an interesting and at times scarey novel that will keep you reading . I read it over the course of three days as I wanted to know what would happen next and was sorry when I reached last page as eager for more. Can a sequel be in the works???

Trashy and fun like a bad B-movie is fun........2004-08-04
Have you ever watched a bad movie just for the fun of it? You know, a movie like "The Legend of Boggy Creek" or any old 70's horror movie, for that matter?
Well, reading this book is kind of like watching a movie so bad, it's good.
Oddly, the writer is actually technically rather skilled, so the book itself is an easy, unjarring read. It's the wacky, zany, zaftig plotline that causes the raspberries.
I don't know for sure what I think about Amityville -- it scared the dickens out of me as a kid, but as an adult I have to wonder if it was just a lucrative hoax. Yet, reputable researchers like Ed and Lorraine Warren claim it was real. Maybe the whole Amityville phenomenon was true to begin with, then became exaggerated as time went on.
But never mind about the truth or falsity of the phenomenon. This book is worth picking up used. It will give some chills, some laughs, and a big dose of nostalgia for the 70's and early 80's.

Seance for a Vampire.......2007-01-10
Not the greatest book in the series. Liked later ones much better.
Sherlock Holmes and Dracula?.......2006-03-19
Not only do Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and Rasputin manage to show up in the same novel, but Saberhagen unconvincingly proposes that Holmes and Dracula are cousins. The novel is not tightly constructed enough in some respects for my tastes, and in other places details I would like to have known more about are not explored. The story is told from the perspective of both Dr. Watson and Dracula and switches back and forth. Also, it is easy to guess what happened in the case of the drowned girl (the 'mystery' part of the novel). It shouldn't require the legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes to figure it out.
A bit farfetched.......2001-11-09
I really hate to say this, because I've never given anyone less than four stars, but I wasn't really impressed with this book. I found it a bit farfetched that Dracula was related to Holmes, and it added many complicating elements to the story. But overall, it was a decent book, and certainly not the worst I've ever read. I suppose if you're really into vampires and such like that you might be interested, but I don't believe in the supernatural (unless you count God) and I don't think that Holmes would either.
Not Saberhagen's best, but still worthy.......1999-12-12
I bought this book because I was blown away by his alternative telling of 'Frankenstein' (which appears, tragically, to be out of print.) It didn't live up to my first taste of Saberhagen, and so disappointed me.... but as a representative of the vampire and Holmesian genres, it's an original entry and a pleasant light read.
Extremely well written.......1998-04-18
I think that this book was well written and has alot of detail. This author has a very vivid imagination and has used it well. I think that it is material that could be made into movie. I very much enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who like mysteries. The book does move a little slow in the beginning, but it picks up soon enough.

Bland.......2007-09-30
I learned from this book that sometimes you only have one good novel in you; that you can write your heart out and still not get anywhere; that dialect will betray your unfamiliarity with culture; that doing something just because no one has before isn't a good enough reason.
Card writes involving fiction that has been great, but this novel seldom rises above embarrassing. He's a good storyteller, even when the writing is abysmal, but if this book is any evidence, he's no novelist.
very enjoyable Card story.......2007-06-08
I recommend this book for anyone who loves a Sci Fi flare or only likes it a little. Very hard to put this book down. If you are a Card fan, a fiction fan, or a sci-fi fan, read this book. You won't be disappointed.
yah.........2007-03-10
I like Orson Scott Card.. but when he starts talking about black people I just want to cringe. I'm still in the process of reading the book as it's just one of those you can't put down even if you try to. As a black person I wouldn't really reccommend this book to anyone who doesn't truly understand the black culture as this might give someone an off representation about how it really is to be black. It seems like Card tried really hard to get his characters right and I think it was nice of him to try... I think he's just trying to hard to address racial and age related issues. The actuall story is pretty intriguing though if you're able to get past everything else... so yah. Read it if you'd like, but just remember that these are characters and not real people. Honestly, black people don't really think about their color all the time. They only think of it when they're reminded of it.
One of my favorite Orson Scott Card books.......2007-01-03
If you're looking for a great book by Orson Scott Card, but don't want to delve into a series such as the phenomenal Ender series, the Homecoming series, or the Alvin Maker series, please start with Magic Street. If you're a long time reader of Card, but haven't picked this one up yet, do yourself a favor and get it!
In my opinion, Orson Scott Card can write just about any genre. With Magic Street, he tackles contemporary fantasy, and he does it perfectly. This is the story of Mack Street, a young boy who soon finds that the world he lives in is not as simple as it seems. He meets Puck from A Midsummers Night Dream and soon finds himself in the beautiful world created by Shakespeare. This story is much more involved than this, but I don't want to give much away. But basically, it's a wonderful story of the fantasy of what might await us on the other side of this concrete, urban life.
If you like this book, you may also enjoy Card's Enchantment, which is his somewhat retelling of Sleeping Beauty...only not that simple. If you've read Enchantment and enjoyed it, you will definitely enjoy this one too.
Card doing what Card does best.......2006-12-31
Like most of Card's best-known works, "Magic Street" deals with a child prodigy of sorts. Mack Street was found in a plastic grocery bag just hours after being born. He was saved, taken in and began to grow up, all the while fighting off a strange ability to peer into other people's dreams. As he grows, he encounters magic in many forms -- from the mysterious Bag Man that was present for his birth to a passageway to a true Fairyland just down the road. In the end, Mack and his friends have to do battle with an ancient power, and only the goodness in Mack's heart may have the power to save them all.
Card's previous contemporary fantasy, "Enchantment," dealt with a modernized version of the story of Sleeping Beauty. This time, his inspiration is the Fairyland of William Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream." He uses those elements wonderfully, crafting a world of mystic power and wonder smack-dab in the middle of a predominantly black Los Angeles suburb. The rules of the world he's crafted are solid and consistent, even thought it takes us some time to understand them.
Card's talent for characterization is also evident through this novel. Mack himself is a pure, virtuous soul, but not in an idealized or unrealistic way. He simply comes across as a very real boy with a very good heart (one that turns out to make perfect sense). Other characters, like the Bag Man, Mack's surrogate mother Miz Smitcher and his guardian Ceese Tucker, are all fleshed out very well. This book -- in large part -- is about wishes and wish fulfillment. Card uses these wishes not only to drive the plot, but to build up and realize his characters as well. In the end, you believe not only in Mack, but in the entire neighborhood that's raised him together. You believe in them and, what's more, you want them to win -- even the ones you don't really like.
The book has a few slow parts towards the beginning. The opening chapters detailing Mack's birth drag a bit, and thee book may have been served better by beginning with Ceese's discovery and allowing the reader to learn of Mack's origins at the same time as the character. The dialect, at times, gets a little tiresome as well. But these are both small problems in an othewise very strong, very entertaining novel .
This is also one of the few Card novels that doesn't readily open itself to a sequel, and that's just fine. This story is complete and whole unto itself. It's also really, really good.

good recipes.......2007-06-07
I like the recipes. They have all turned out very good. They are easy to make. I like the instructions in the front. They explain what each ingredient does and where to find it at. I only wish that the book was spiral bound. It would be a lot easier to keep it open while you cook.
Healthy Bread.......2006-08-02
Every recipe I have tried from this book has been delicious. The whole wheat recipes produce a loaf that is light, soft in texture & delicious. And they rise like white bread.
Nothing Says Loving Like Bread from the Oven.......2005-10-12
There is not better smell in a house on a cold winter's day than baking bread. Nothing better to serve with a meal than hot, fresh baked bread. We back a lot of bread at our house during the colder months and I've been going back to this very good bread book for over five years now and I'm sure I'll be using it for five more.
Yesterday I did up the raisen bread on page 109, very tasty as are many of the bread receipes in this book. You know, I used to bake bread the old fashioned way before my hubby got me the bread machine for Christmas a couple years before the turn of the millinum, but I have to confess I didn't do it anywhere near as often as I do now. The machine was a gift I didn't know I wanted, or needed. But it's a gift I use often and if you're a lover of hot bread, it's a nice little machine you'll use often too and if you do, this book will go with it like a hand to a glove, a duck to water, and any other nice cliché you can think of.

Not all that Healthy.......2005-08-29
Most recipes include whey and/or gluten, neither of which is particularly healthy in their refined state.
I agree with another reviewer who mentioned that half of the pages in the book could be eliminated by listing the ingredients for both one and one and a half pound loaves on the same page.
Hard to find ingredients.......2005-08-10
I have searched for the ingredients in this book with little success. Carob powder is proving more elusive than I thought it would be. I live in a small town and don't have access to a health food store. It's a little frustrating to have all these possibilities and not be able to use them.

Great recipe book for healthy breads.......2007-04-02
I love this healthy bread cookbook. I've tried quite a few of the recipes with my Breadman Pro TR900S which I'm quite happy with and bought based on a good consumer review. I've only had a couple of loaves I was disappointed with and may not try again, but I may have done something wrong. The recipes that I keep making over again instead of trying one I haven't made yet are Fruit and Bran Muffin Bread p.118(Wonderful flavor! yummy), Honey, Yogurt, and Granola Bread p.106, Rolled Grains Bread p.64, Oatmeal Bread p.60, Sweet Banana Raisin Bread p.238, Honey and Flaxseed Bread p.182, Blueberry Lemon Bread p.176, and there's many more that I've tried once and will definitely make again. I haven't bought bread at the store since I got my bread machine and this plus two other bread cookbooks.
