Book Description

And matters aren't helped any by the arrival of her deceitful, long–estranged sister–who sticks around only long enough to dump Molly's twelve–year–old niece before vanishing to parts unknown. Actually, young Emma is a bright spot in these dark days, since she's clever, endearing, and shows a natural aptitude for antiques work.

But the very unnatural death of yet another dealer–a rather shady one this time with possible ties to Molly's family–has the intrepid Ms. Doyle acting as sleuth once again.before a killer decides she's the next item to be taken out of circulation permanently.

2 out of 5 stars Good, but Better Antiques Mysteries Out There.......2007-04-29

For March, our reader's group decided to choose two books that are somewhat similar in theme/setting, and then compare/contrast the two. Since most of us have an interest in antiques, and because we decided we wanted to try some newer writers, we selected two mysteries set in antique circles.

Flinn's heroine, Mollie Doyle, is also a transplant who has moved to Carmel, California. Doyle was previously involved in a different murder investigation - and this being a series, she gets embroiled in a murder again, this time of a fellow antiques dealer. This book is mostly of the cozy variety, but what spices things up is the appearance of Doyle's sister, a bit of a loon who basically abandons her child with Mollie. The child, Emma, is very likable!

Flinn does a very nice job with setting. The town of Carmel, California is very well evoked - and made us East Coasters engage in a bit of "California Dreaming on such a winter's day" of March.

The mystery proceeds apace, and the resolution is mostly satisfying, despite the need to suspend disbelief in a very strong way at several times in the book. All told, we found Tagged for Murder to be occasionally amusing but occasionally forced, but would still recommend it for good, escapist fun.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasure to read.......2006-06-09

This is the second book in the Molly Doyle series. An antique dealer at a show dies from an apparent heart attack. There are many suspects in this story. Which puts an even greater tension between Randall and Molly. This book is a joy to read. The description of the stores, the resturant and Bitsy's home are well done. Emma and Tiger are a great addition to the series. This book is a great way to end a day.

4 out of 5 stars Forgeries and Fakes.......2006-04-25

In the 2nd installment of the Molly Doyle Antique Mystery series, family once again becomes a large part of Molly's life. Things have been looking up for Molly. She has moved away from the forgery scandal that caused her to flee to Carmel, California and has been able to save a good bit of money from managing the small antiques store, Treasures. She has made some good friends in town, including police chief Randall, restaurant owner, Daria, and District Attorney, Lucero. She is able to fill the store with good quality "merch" and has pleased long time friend and store owner, Max. What could possibly go wrong?

For starters, Molly discovers a friend from the antiques world dead at an antiques show. Everyone thinks it was a heart attack at first, and Molly is saddened by the death of her friend. Still reeling from the death, Molly gets another shock. Her long-lost sister, Carrie, shows up on Molly's doorstep, with daughter in tow. The relationship between sisters is precarious at best, but Molly struggles to be civil to her sister for her niece's sake. Getting to know the 12-year-old, Emma, that Molly never knew existed; she soon discovers her sister is lacking a mothering instinct. And when Carrie drops Emma off with Molly and flees town, Molly becomes an instant parent. Learning to raise a child is one thing, but when Molly starts snooping in the world of forgery and drug smuggling, both of their lives are put in danger. Is Molly over her head this time trying to solve a mystery with Emma in tow?

I enjoyed this second installment in the series. I would suggest reading the first book prior to reading this one, as there are many characters in the book, which can become confusing without some background.

I was a bit surprised by the addition of the new character, Emma. She is extremely bright, and has a great ability to adapt to a tough situation. It is a bit unrealistic how quickly she settles in to life with Molly, but I am willing to put that aside for the sake of the story. I look forward to future books by this author!

The first book in the series is called "Dealing in Murder". Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Fun Series.......2005-12-18

I'm enjoying this series and look forward to the next installment, which is on its way. However, I found this book to be much less entertaining than the first in the series.

While I was glad to see the constant smoking references cut down since I felt the overwhelmed the last book, I thought the ones that were in this one were too far-fetched. These characters live in California, where it's nearly impossible to find a place to smoke indoors. Yet these characters light up everywhere -- in shops, in restaurants, in police headquarters. It would've been more believable to have them stepping outside for a smoke, rather than having Randall treating police headquarters like a cigar lounge, where he was constantly shoving ashtrays at Molly every time she walked in the door.

I also didn't see the point of adding the annoying character of Emma -- Molly is now saddled with this child in future installments, and I didn't believe she added anything to the story. What 12-year-old would adapt so easily to having been abandoned by her mother in a strange place with only two pairs of jeans and a few books, and left with a total stranger? Her dialogue was also ridiculous, from her constant references to "we" and "our" a day after moving in with Molly to her discussion with Molly's friend Daria about how Molly "has had enough angst to deal with lately."

Speaking of Daria, I'm also not sure what this character adds to the story, other than to balance out a two guy/two gal foursome with Lucero, and to give them all a central meeting place. Is there nowhere else in town that these people can get together and talk? It just doesn't seem that this character has been developed at all, and is really nothing but filler, or another voice to pipe in during group discussions. I don't know too many restaurant owners that are considered part of an "investigative team" when it comes to solving murders, where they have to be part of every meeting and the solution, yet have nothing whatsoever to do with the case.

I hope the next installment is a little better...and I hope we're not taken away from the story by the annoying Emma.

5 out of 5 stars Flinn Has Become A Favorite!!.......2005-03-11

Elaine Flinn's second book in her antique mystery series is even better than the first! "Tagged for Murder" (love the title) again features antique dealer, Molly Doyle, as she continues to rebuild her reputation in the posh community of affluent Carmel, CA.

Mayhem erupts when local antique dealer, Trudy Collins, abruptly dies from an apparent heart attack at the Carmel Antiques Show. When Molly's sister, Carrie, suddenly arrives that day with her daughter after a 15-year estrangement, Molly once again fears her sister is being deceitful. Carrie swiftly and unceremoniously leaves her daughter, Emma, with Molly and takes off to pursue a "legal career" overseas.

As fake antiques and additional murders begin to surface, Molly attempts to piece together who is behind these acts - against her better judgment and certainly against the wishes of Police Chief Randall. The result is a great mystery and terrific development of wonderful characters.

Flinn has a wonderful series going! The dialogue is written in a realistic manner as to the verbiage that individuals actually use. Any "dangling participles" are included to make the conversations realistic and engrossing as, let's face it, most speech patterns and dialogues are not always in complete grammatical sentences. To change this would change the whole rhythm of the characters.

The addition of Emma was absolutely brilliant! This kid brings such a new dimension to Molly and others. I thought that Flinn VERY ACCURATELY AND REALISTICALLY did not have Emma enrolled in school. Only about 2-3 weeks have elapsed (not months!) and Molly has started the legal process to have Em remain with her. She has arranged for a tutor, but for Molly to enroll Em in school, only days after being abandoned by her mother and before any decisions were made by the State, WOULD have been unrealistic.

Likewise, Molly's relationship with Chief Randall is currently being defined. Randall cares greatly for Molly, but sternly masks his fear as he is trying to rein Molly in when she insists on putting her life in jeopardy. From the first book, "Dealing With Murder," we have learned that Randall is often jaded and rather acerbic in nature- as is Molly at times. Randall gives Molly a difficult time as she KNOWINGLY hides evidence that she wants to look over. Good grief - the argument that she gives Randall about "forgetting about certain evidence" is an excuse that they both realize is fabricated. However, she can't very well say, "Randall, here is the evidence that I deliberately withheld from you while I attempted to discern how involved my sister is in this matter!"

And finally, Molly's sister has not been arrested because she is out of the country. They have just that night discovered the extent of her involvement. Although the next book may indicate that she may be extradited back to the States for trial, law and customs officials may "have bigger fish to fry" and not pursue it.

"Tagged for Murder" is a wonderful new series and I greatly anticipate the next book by Elaine Flinn!

In Juniper, Gentian, and Rosemary, Pamela Dean explores the life of 15-year-old Gentian (the middle of the three titular sisters)--the homework, the Halloween parties with her best friends, the spats with elder sister Juniper. Gentian is a student at an "open" high school, and her telescope and astronomical observations are her paramount interests. Then her well-ordered days are disturbed by traces of a mystery. A house suddenly appears next door, complete with a darkly handsome boy who speaks only in quotations. Is he interested in Gentian, or Juniper, or even Rosemary? The final conflict of the book involves a time machine in the attic and unfurls with a hallucinogenic intensity. In her first series, which started with Secret Country, Dean depicted an absorbing fantasy world with an old-fashioned flavor. Here, she shows herself to be a careful, highly controlled writer with a thorough knowledge of the heart of a gifted teenager. --Blaise Selby

      Book Description

Deans excellent fantasy takes its inspiration from the oft-told folktale. With truly marvelous skill, Dean weaves together adolescent social and romantic fumbling, hints of magical feuds, a Nancy Drew-like mystery, urban fantasy in the manner of Charles de Lint. Booklist

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating - leaves one wondering.......2007-01-10

This book is very Pamela Dean-ish; drawing one deep into the world of a geeky, literate teenager. I loved the experience of reading it because I love the way she deals with relationships and friendships; the way in which things do not have to be spelled out between people; the way in which her characters run on assumptions in the way that we all do... but few authors capture quite as well.

The supernatural boy-next-door element left me feeling a bit like there was something I had missed - and that the something was not even included in the book. I felt that perhaps there was some literary or allegorical reference that I should have known, but didn't.

I agree with some reviewers that the big plot resolution was disappointing in some way, and then Gentian's conversation with her parents seemed shockingly low-key, but the fact that the book ends with her inner struggle about how to fix her relationship with her friend is spot-on. Again, we are not told how Gentian is feeling, but we "feel" it anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Has its moments.......2006-06-07

When Pamela Dean is at her best, her books are well-written, intelligent, funny and clever. Her plots are intricate and exciting, with frequent nods to the great English literary masters. Tam Lin was an example of this. Juniper, Gentian and Rosemary, however, is not.
The problem with this book is that it's chock-full of Mary Sues, to such an extent that it would make an enthusiastic fanfiction writer blanch. This is a book about children, but they are all smart enough to be multiple Nobel prize winners -- they excel at astronomy and poetry, quote Shakespeare like English scholars -- and they act like adults. I have yet to meet a 13-year old with the intellectual capacity and vocabulary of Gentian, the main character and heroine. The way the children speak to each other, their musings -- it doesn't feel real.
In addition, the plot is too thin. Too many threads are left hanging loose at the ending, and this, I am sad to say, makes for quite an unsatisfactory read. It is a shame, because Pamela Dean can be a really good writer (even though, at times, she seems to have a somewhat militant atheist agenda; but, alas, that is a whole other discussion).

      3 out of 5 stars I haven't decided yet..........2005-11-13

I picked up The Secret Country Trilogy a couple of months ago and absolutely fell in love with it. I love Dean's writing style, her characters, the story, and the fact that I can re-read it four times (and counting) and still discover things I missed the first time. The point of this digression is that I was highly motivated to seek out other books by this author, and now I almost wish I hadn't. While her characters still had some of the same sparkle, and the vocabulary was refreshingly erudite, this book was somehow lacking in substance and ultimate resolution. I enjoyed the interplay of characters, but there were too many issues that never got wrapped up at the end. At several points during my reading of the book, I had the strangest sense that I'd read the book before, because it all seemed very familiar to me. Upon further reflection, I decided it reminded me of another book I just finished, "Alison, Who Went Away." And quite frankly, that book dealt with many similar themes in a much more satisfactory manner. So if you're looking for a wonderful story with exquisite characters and a satisfying end, skip this one and find a copy of "The Secret Country." You won't be sorry.

      4 out of 5 stars A rite of passage........2005-07-27

This is a terrible book that I have read four times. Some books seem to have a character that are not quantifiable by the credibility of their plot or the fickle nature of their characters. Although dealing with fantasy this story is not in essence fantastic. The warmth of friendship, both within and outside the family, is the factor that first comes to mind when thinking of this book and it is this that has provided the impetus for my repeated readings. It is not a book that sits comfortably within known genres, on my bookshelves it sits alongside "Franny and Zoey," as a great book to read when you are ill.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting charactors that desrvea better story.........2004-11-16

The main charactor of Gentian,(whom I liked, although she(and her group, the ironically named Giant Ants", were a bit precocious for my taste at times) are an unusual group of young girls who'd rather discuss Shakespeare than boys & fashion. A highly mysterious (and handsome)boy,Dominic ,shows up in the neighborhood in time to shake up Gentian's placid existance. His amibiguity and Time Machine project kept me reading.Unfortunately, the project, like the book, never seems to take off and a strange spell(or curse?) that they father placed on his daughters so they would'nt ever want to run off with any handsome, intriguing young men sends the story off in an unsatifying direction(which, hopefully. I certainly he lifts by the time they're of age! ) Overall, this book was less about fantasy and more like an updated Little Women(whom the author refers quite a bit) Not would you'd expect, but not terrible either, just a bit of let-down.

        5 out of 5 stars Gaining Time.......2004-09-07

Bohemia is alive & kicking in Ventura's,'Nighttime Losing Time'. The writing seems to come from direct sexual & musical experience, and has the power of revelation. I'd never heard of Ventura, but noticed on the jacket that post-Jungian sage, James Hillman had endorsed it. A long time fan of Hillman's brilliant insights, I jumped into Ventura's world & came up gasping for air. It is sprawling & rabbits on in some regional Texan patois. But precious & pretentious it is not. When I'd resurfaced I sent it directly to the few friends I knew would rejoice in the sincerity of Ventura's quest for the sources of his creative gifts, the 'places where they ain't got scales.' It took a decade to revisit this book as I was anxious that the initial read may have been a chimera, a projection of my own crises. But no. Friends confirmed its originary clout. And no; it rutted in my creases yet again. It may help if you dig Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, Joe Ely, or Willie Nelson as their music is the soundtrack for Ventura's honkytonk heavies. Narrator, Jesse Wales's apocalyptic vision (p 375) swims in the blood meridian so epically summoned in Cormac McCarthy's magnum opus of that name. Unlike McCarthy's remorseless dudes destined to endlessly repeat their bedevilled lives, Wales finds regeneration and possibly redemption through understanding the meaning of the pain and loss he and his coterie share. Move over Balzac & Baudelaire, Ventura has muscled entry to the dark domains, in the breathless pursuit of ecstasy.

        5 out of 5 stars Not a Sensation .... A Revelation.......1997-10-23

This is a scorching first novel from a first-rate American writer about the back road, the juke joints, and the inner lives around them --- without a trace of bombast or sensationalism that so often come with this territory.

I've done my share of Lit.101 and Great Books, yet this is the only book that came along and successfully conjured in flesh and blood the secret selves that people around me carry in concealment.

Never spent time in that corner of America myself, yet the book had made me see the world in a whole new light.

Strong stuff -- but medicine for all you seekers out there....

When Michael Milken was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 1993, he wasted no time switching from his daily egg-and-bacon-sandwich breakfasts to a low-fat, vegetarian diet. He also founded CaP CURE, the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate. Through research supported by CaP CURE, Milken learned that cutting down on fat was not enough--that soy protein could be an important missing ingredient in his diet. He duly incorporated all of the cancer-fighting ingredients into his diet, but he missed the joy of eating.

Enter Beth Ginsberg, Culinary Institute of America (CIA) graduate and natural foods chef. When Milken hired her in 1995, she turned his medicinal soy drinks into tasty, healthy fruit smoothies, his tofu-spread sandwiches into Vegetable Reubens--with tempeh bacon! It became clear that a healthy, cancer-fighting diet need not mean an end to culinary pleasure. In the beautifully photographed The Taste for Living Cookbook, Ginsberg collects more than 75 of Milken's favorite dishes, from Tofu Dog Casserole with a Pretzel Crust to Greek Spinach Pie in a Phyllo Nest to Devil's "Fool" Cake with Cocoa Frosting. Colorful icons next to each recipe let you know how long a dish will take to prepare--many are under an hour from kitchen to table. Nutritional details are given at the end of each recipe, and Ginsberg notes when a substitution can be made (say, low-fat turkey in place of tempeh in a sandwich). Proceeds from the sales of The Taste for Living Cookbook will go to further CaP CURE's research--resulting, one hopes, in even more delicious, healthful meals from chef Ginsberg. --Rebecca A. I bought what turned out to be a beautifully photographed, almost coffee table-like book . . . but not only do I have a hard enough time finding exotic ingredients where I live but I surely don't have the time to do the recipes Mr. Milken's personal chef turns out every night. If only I'd read a little further in my frenzy to find out everything I could about prostate cancer! My husband is newly diagnosed with the disease and we're attempting to turn our diets in a more healthy direction but it still has to be realistic cooking or it just won't happen at the end of a long work day. The best cookbook I've found out there is "Eat to Beat PC Cookbook" by David Ricketts. I need a cookbook I can really use for us to make this battle.

          4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2002-12-15

The book presents recipes attractively. I've tried a few and they were easier and better than I expected, given the somewhat unusual ingredients for familiar foods. The book goes astray, to some degree, in my opinion, because it works too hard at recreating unhealthy high fat foods with low-fat, high-soy, equivalents. Better to just present vegetarian recipees that don't try to seem like something else.

format...just looking at the photographs and the tasty,
          colorful food motivated me...interesting

4 out of 5 stars Great for those who are lactose intolerant.......2001-04-19

I purchased this book because it contained recipes like flan that didn't require any dairy products. It also provides some great tips for substituting out ingredients like cream and other milk products without sacrificing texture and taste.

At first, I was a bit concerned that most of the recipes in the book called for ingredients that I had never heard of, but even the small health-food section of my local grocery store had almost everything that I needed.

          3 out of 5 stars If I Were A Rich Man..........2001-02-25

The taste For Living Cookbook Mike Milken's Favorite Recipes For Fighting Cancer is a nicely photographed book. The recipes are basic health food fare. Cut down on fat, avoid meat, eat lots of veggies and soy. If I was a wealthy man I would have a professional chef move into my home and cook these complicated meals im my professional kitchen. I would also go to a medition center in Massachusetts "based on Ayurveda tradition" and I would "invite a doctor trained in both Western and Ayurveda medicine to move into...our house for a few months" I don't mean to be cynical but I have neither the time or money to follow this books recipes. I did not find this book very helpful .

          Book Description

In The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook, Mike Milken has once again commissioned chef Beth Ginsberg to transform more than 100 global favorites-- including quiche Lorraine, Spaghetti Bolognese, fajitas and crme brulee, into practically fat-free recipes loaded with cancer-fighting nutrients and soy protein. These low-fat dishes help fight heart disease too.

The ink was barely dry on the first Taste for Living Cookbook (CaP CURE, 1998), when chef/author Beth Ginsberg began perfecting the new recipes for her second collaboration with philanthropist and financier Mike Milken. The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook: Mike Milken's Favorite Recipes for Fighting Cancer and Heart Disease (CaP CURE, October 1999, distributed by Time-Life) explores the vibrant international flavors that have become so much a part of American cooking today.

Ginsberg, a Culinary Institute of America graduate and natural foods chef, is a master at transforming high-fat classics such as spaghetti Bolognese, quiche Lorraine and egg rolls into soy-rich fare that meets the high standards for healthfulness and flavor that Mike requested when she became his personal and corporate chef.

"Don't give up the dishes and the flavors you love," encourages Ginsberg. "Change the ingredients. Adapt your cooking methods. You dont need lots of fat for food to taste great."

When Mike Milken was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 1993, he quickly swore off the high-fat fare that he had eaten most of his life. He also founded CaP CURE, the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate. Working with some of the nation's top cancer researchers, he recognized the vital importance of cutting fat and increasing the consumption of soy protein to 40 grams daily--not an easy feat for a man who used to eat a fried-egg-and-bacon sandwich every morning.

L.A. chef/ restaurateur Beth Ginsberg convinced him that she could create healthy versions of his favorite dishes. Through the Taste for Living cookbooks, Mike and Beth share these great recipes with people who love to eat and people who want to lower their risk of cancer and heart disease through a healthy diet.

The more than 100 recipes in The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook are all easy to follow, and each is accompanied by a complete nutritional analysis. Colorful icons tell the cook how long it takes to prepare a recipe from start to finish. Most are well under one hour.

The all-new Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook is organized into 14 complete menus, each featuring the cuisine of a particular country or region. Youll find some of the best known dishes from the French, Italian and Chinese repertoire. Youll be tempted by the aromatic flavors of the Indian, Caribbean, Mexican and American offerings. Individual menus offer appetizers, main course options and scrumptious (and wonderfully healthful) desserts.

As a bonus, the final section focuses on Mike's love for American junk food. From corn dogs to chocolate cupcakes, doughnuts to deep-dish pizza, you'll find recipes for the foods you thought were forbidden in a healthy diet. Ginsberg has not only taken the fat out of these notorious bad-guys of the American menu, she's enriched their nutrition profiles with soy protein, added fiber, vitamins and crucial micronutrients.

The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook doesn't rely on exotic, hard-to-find ingredients to produce flavorful international food. Everything you need--from tofu, tempeh and tamari soy sauce to assorted grains, beans and produce--is available at large supermarkets or natural food stores nationwide. A special section at the back, "The Healthy World Pantry" provides additional information about all the ingredients.

More than a collection of recipes, The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook presents up-to-date nutrition facts in the battle against cancer and heart disease. Sidebars look at different foods currently being studied for their potential roles fighting these chronic diseases. Special contributors David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition and Dean Ornish, M.D., Director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, CA, provide the scientific basis for why this diet works.

Scores of luscious full-color photographs from award-winning Burke-Triolo Studios in Los Angeles prove that low-fat, healthy food can and does look absolutely delicious.

CaP CURE, the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate, located in Santa Monica, California, is a nonprofit public charity that rapidly identifies and funds promising prostate cancer research. CaP CURE scientists have developed revolutionary vaccines, nutritional therapies and other treatments that give hope to prostate cancer patients. CaP CURE-supported researchers are currently conducting more than 70 human clinical trials of various therapies. The organization also works to raise public awareness of the role that diet plays in reducing the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. All profits from The Taste for Living World Cookbook go to further CaP CURE's research.

From cacciatore to sukiyaki to enchiladas, and from tiramis to banana pudding, The Taste for Living WORLD Cookbook is for anyone who cares about enjoying good flavor and good health.

4 out of 5 stars Allergies Lead Me to Soy.......2001-10-24

At the recommendation of my grandmother, I purchased this book for help in preparing recipes prepared with soy. I was diagnosed with many allergies and I can no longer eat dairy products, corn, mushrooms, etc. (that's only the beginning, the list goes on!). I knew about tofu but I didn't know what to do with it. Using this book as a guide, I prepared a spinach lasagne following the ingredience for spinach ravoli (pg. 35). It was delicious, if I don't say so myself! I would definitely recommend this cookbook. I like using it as a guide to help with new ideas in food preparation. Bona Petite!

          4 out of 5 stars Food-Snob Friends.......2000-08-11

I loved this book. I've been a vegetarian for years, and have had to live with the scorn of my food-snob friends, many of whom wouldn't come to my house for dinner parties. So I cooked a feast of Ginsberg's recipes and impressed them all-finally. The Chinese food is especially tasty, although the biscotti was terrific. I brought it to work and everyone ate it up.

2 out of 5 stars Do not waste your money.......2000-02-21

The recipes are time intensive and many are tasteless. Health food does not deservice the bad rap.

5 out of 5 stars Another beautiful cookbook.......1999-10-02

I enjoyed the Taste for Living Cookbook so much, I am thrilled that Beth Ginsberg continued to share her creativity in the kitchen in this new book. The WORLD cookbook contains all my favorite Italian, Chinese and Mexican recipes, re-invented with soy protein-- something I know will contribute to a long life for me and my family. And who would have thought we could still enjoy the all-American Chicago deep-dish pizza and Philly cheese steak without sacrificing health?! I have learned so much! Looking forward to Book 3.
