Book Description
New York Times bestselling master of suspense,
Elizabeth Peters, brings an exotic world of adventure, intrigue, and danger to vivid life, in a tale as powerful as ancient Egypt.
The Emersons have returned to the Valley of the Kings in 1922 and Amelia Peabody and her family look forward to delving once more into the age-old mysteries buried in Egypt's ever-shifting sands. But a widow's strange story -- and even stranger request -- is about to plunge them into a storm of secrets, treachery, and murder.
The woman, a well-known author, has come bearing an ill-gotten treasure -- a golden likeness of a forgotten king -- which she claims is cursed. She insists it has taken the life of her husband and unless it is returned to the tomb from which it was stolen, more people will die.
Amelia and her clan resolve to uncover the secrets of the statue's origins, setting off on a trail that twists and turns in directions they never anticipated -- and, perhaps, toward an old nemesis with unscrupulous new designs. But each step toward the truth seems to reveal another peril, suggesting to the intrepid Amelia that the curse is more than mere superstition. And its next victim might well be a beloved family member ... or Amelia Peabody herself.
A novel filled with riveting suspense, pulse-pounding action, and the vibrant life of a fascinating place and time,
The Serpent on the Crown is the jewel in the crown of a grand master, the remarkable Elizabeth Peters.

Once again the incomparable
New York Times bestselling master of suspense, Elizabeth Peters, brings an exotic world of adventure, intrigue, and danger to vivid life, in a tale as exciting, mysterious, and powerful as ancient Egypt.
A unique treasure obtained by unscrupulous means, the small gold statuette of an unidentified Egyptian king is a priceless relic from a bygone era. But more than history surrounds the remarkable artifact -- for it is said that early death will come to anyone who possesses it.
Enjoying a world finally at peace, the Emersons have returned to the Valley of the Kings in 1922. With the lengthy ban on their archaeological activities lifted, Amelia Peabody and her family look forward to delving once more into the age-old mysteries buried in Egypt's ever-shifting sands. But a widow's strange story -- and even stranger request -- is about to plunge them into a storm of secrets, treachery, superstition ... and murder.
The woman, a well-known author, has come bearing an ill-gotten treasure -- a golden likeness of a forgotten king -- which she claims is cursed. Already, she insists, it has taken the life of her husband, and unless it is returned to the tomb from which it was stolen, more people will die.
Intrigued by the mystery, Amelia and her clan resolve to uncover the secrets of the statue's origins, setting off on a trail that twists and turns in directions they never anticipated -- and, perhaps, toward an old nemesis with unscrupulous new designs. But each step toward the truth seems to reveal another peril, suggesting to the intrepid Amelia that the curse is more than mere superstition. And its next victim might well be her irascible husband, Radcliffe, their beloved son, Ramses, his lovely wife, Nefret ... or Amelia Peabody herself.
A novel filled with riveting suspense, pulse-pounding action, and the vibrant life of a fascinating place and time,
The Serpent on the Crown is the jewel in the crown of a grand master, the remarkable Elizabeth Peters.

The Serpent on the Crown by Elizabeth Peters.......2007-07-21
This book was shipped very quickly from the UK and it came in perfect condition. Great product!
Ramses Reincarnated.......2007-07-18
Ever since Ramses grew up, I've missed the pedantic child. I'm delighted to see him now reincarnated in his son, David John. Though my children aren't so precocious, they play an important role in my second comtemporary romance, "Big Bad Wolfe." I look forward to reading "Tomb of the Golden Bird" to see what David John, his twin sister Charlotte, and the rest of the Emersons are up to next.
Another Classic Peabody.......2007-06-25
I just love these books. I love spending time with the Emersons and nothing makes me sadder than when the book ends. I had tears in the end when reminded of the intense love Amelia and Emerson have for each other. These books are romantic, fun, adventurous and educating. What more could you want from a book?
My only issue is Amelia's expressed view of how she wants to leave this world. When she talks about it, my stomache is in a knot and my heart pounds as if she is someone I know and love in real life. She must be etneral on this earth!
Great book!.......2007-06-09
I have been a huge fan of the Amelia Peabody books since the first one came out and this one doesn't disappoint. It has all the same characters we have grown to love, and as usual, interesting new antagonists. It captures the spirit of the age as well as the older ones have, and the allusions to the finding of King Tut's tomb are easily seen by anyone who knows their history. In this book, you really become aware that Amelia and Radcliffe are not immortal and are preparing to pass the torch to Nefret and Ramses. But, as usual, not without a fight! I would recommend this book, and of course the whole series, to anyone who finds Egyptology to be interesting.
Rosenblat tired of Amelia?.......2007-04-23
I thoroughly enjoy the funny and farcical Amelia Peabody books of Elizabeth Peters, and I have listened to a number of them as read by Barbara Rosenblat. She always does a beautiful job with the many characters and accents in each book, but in The Serpent in the Crown I wonder if she's getting a little tired of Amelia and Emerson. They are parodies, of course, but usually endearing characters. In this reading, though, Amelia is officious and shrill without the self-deprecating humor that softens her character; Emerson is just boorish and boring. I found the book, as read by Ms. Rosenblat, humorless and lacking in the usual charm.

As a tribute to the 1970s output of artist George Perez, The Avengers: The Serpent Crown is a bit more successful than Fantastic Four Visionaries Vol. 1. That's mainly because Perez was a steadier presence on the Avengers, meaning a trade paperback with fewer story gaps than the FF volume (the issues included here are 141-144 and 147-149). And even if the period wasn't the most historically significant for the team, the stories by Steve Englehart are fun. Patsy Walker, one of Marvel's romance-comics icons, returns to become the new Cat (now called the Hellcat, unveiled in Perez's gorgeous full-page spread), and several 19th-century heroes band with Thor, Moondragon, and Hawkeye to fight Kang when he travels to the Old West. (It would have been nice to see a little more of some of the cowboys such as Night Rider.) Meanwhile Captain America, Iron Man, the Vision, the Scarlet Witch, and prospective member the Beast travel to the home world of the Squadron Supreme, where the U.S. president is none other than Nelson Rockefeller. --David Horiuchi
Book Description
Twin threats to time and space as campaigns by Kang and the Crown coincide! The Avengers fight the Set-serving Squadron Supreme in a clash between Earths and head for the nineteenth century to keep the West from getting wilder! Continuity questions continue as Kang and Immortus mix it up! Plus: the menace of... President Nelson Rockefeller?! Collects Avengers #141-144 and #147-149.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The Serpent Crown is a device than an alien has used to control The Squadron Supreme on their world, and they need help from The Avengers to undo the damage.
This produces a great team up and cross world story, and as an added bonus, we have the appearance of the Hellcat, a definite favorite.
Mighty Fun.......2006-06-29
Yes, the Perez art is very nice, but I remember these stories for the writing of Steve Englehart, who almost single-handedly revived my interest in comics in the mid-70's. I couldn't figure out why one story was called "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under Justice" until I realized that the Squadron Supreme was a witty take-off on the (then) cardboard DC characters of the Justice League. It was particularly amusing when, a couple of years later, Englehart moved over to DC to actually write the JLA, and had great fun with them as well. Englehart was the supreme comics writer of the 1970's and he's still one of the best around today, though he doesn't work as often as I'd like.
ANOTHER GEORGE PEREZ CLASSIC.......2005-10-04
In this collection, you'll AVENGERS VOL. 1 # 141-144, 147-149. #'s 145-146 is a different story arc because of deadlines I suppose.
Anyway, in this collection the Avengers are faced with double trouble: to intercept KANG THE CONQUEROR'S plan to rule the world by going to the 19th century and a crisis in the present time with the ROXXON CORPORATION. Issue # 141 is the set up of the twin crisis, #142-143 deals with the 19th century and 144, 147-150 deals with the climax of the SQUADRON SUPREME saga.
THOR AND MOONDRAGON 9with IMMORTUS' assistance)travel back in time to find their teamate HAWKEYE in the western era. They encounter Marvel's greatest western heroes: TWO GUN KID, KID COLT, RAWHIDE KID, RINGO ETC in a struggle against Kang. The final one on one battle between kang and THE MIGHTY THOR was short but sweet as well as when they took the TWO GUN KID back with them to the 20th century.
As a kid, this was one of the very first times I have really seen THE VISION against 3 Squadron members including their most poerful member: HYPERION, and quite literally ran over him. The other battles with CAPTAIN AMERICA, IRON MAN , THE BEAST & THE HELLCAT (this is also the very first time Patsy Walker donned the Catsuit)against DOC SPECTRUM, THE WHIZZER, AMPHIBION, TOM THUMB ETC(JLA RIP -OFFS). were also well drawn and quite fast-paced ala GEORGE PEREZ(one of my favorite artists)
THE HIGHTLIGHT OF THIS COLLECTION I BELIEVE IS: Thor taking on Kang alone, The Vision taking on HYPERION(marvel's Superman rip-off)and the first appearance of the Hellcat.
A good read for any 70's comic fan. It was well beyond its time.
Also: DO NOT MISS STRACYNSKI'S SUPREME POWER, starring HYPERION.
I have the comic collection, get the TP
a wonderful story, from cowboys to aliens and everything in between.......2005-09-29
Ok i didn't know what to expect from this book, it sounds like a jumble of stuff, in a short space you have a justice league rip off, travels to another world, evil companies ad a whole government turning evil, a trip to the old west with a bunch of old west stars, fights with their worst enemy kang and a finsh against a giant whale man..but they are able to pull it off.
the story starts with the teams splitting into two squads, one must travel to the old west and rescue their friend hawkeye, the other has to take down the roxxen company, the tales come together at the end, but the pacing all through it is great, it's a lot of sci-fi fun, time travel, alternate worlds, huge super battles with a justice league copy called squadren supreme.
the name of the book comes from the serpant crown, it takes control of the people who wears it, the company owner of roxxen on the avengers earth and the president rockafeller led government on the supreme earth, the avengers have to face the squad and get the crown back to their earth and do something about it before its too late.
while they are doing that the other team must rescue their friend in the old west, and run into the time traveller kang, who is holding an old west town hostage, it's a great story and the old west heroes, some who pre-date marvels super heroes like thor and spidey and others, are really fun, the biggest problem..you want more of them and maybe they will release a western trade one day.
also in this title is hellcat, a new avenger, she was part of marvels "girl comics" line in the 40's, their answer to archie and had titles like patsy and her pals, when she lost her book after about 20 years they turned her into of all things a super hero named hellcat, you see how that happens here and it's really good.
the book has great art by george perez, a few dated parts, but overall is a heck of a fun read, has some of their best villains, if your an avengers fan get this.
oh and the two missing issues were a fill in between the story and they eft them out to keep the flow there, your not missing anything.

Tough to find, but worth the patience.......2005-06-02
This is a pulp trilogy that deserves a new edition. Crown of the Serpent is escapism in the best sense of the word: Allen L. Wold is excellent at creating tangible worlds for his characters to explore. The main weakness of the series is that the characters are somewhat flat compared to their wonderful surroundings, but this book is too much fun not to read.
Follow up to Jewels of the Dragon.......2000-06-13
The second instalation of young Rikards adventures as a Gesta (a lifestyle that involves adventure and danger)is almost as grabbing as his first adventure in Jewels of the Dragon. Picked up by local police in Nowarth, for tresspassing (while trading 'liberated' artifacts). It would seem Rikard and his companion Darcy, have come to the end of their adventuring, until long-time friend and federal agent Leonid Polski saves their skins to recruit them for a top-secret, incredibly dangerous mission. Rikard accepts the mission to try to find and stop the mass murderers after seeing the slaughter the pirates wreaked on the planet Natimarie. From there Rikard sets forth on a new kind of adventure, a legal one, involving artificial planets milenia old, artifacts and species long thought extinct, and quite a few unpleasant suprises including a race of acient warriors (thought to have vanishied eons ago) infamous for their cruelty and goals of galactic domination. This book was incredibly hard to put down, once I got started reading it, and a definate read for anyone who enjoyed Jewels of the Dragon.

Customer Reviews:
Enterprise Logs - Fascinating and well told stories!.......2003-07-21
From the colonial shores of America during the revolutionary war to the southern Pacific ocean in the embroiled second world war to the farthest reaches of the galaxy the proud name Enterprise has born the banner of honor, freedom and justice, conveying humanities best to friend and foe alike. In these pages you will find ten exceptional, intriguing and truly inspirational short stories written by several of Star Trek's finest authors. Along with the exceptional stories contained within the pages of this exceptional anthology there is a brief bio of the author telling each story.
Captain Israel Daniel Dickenson commanding the Sloop-of-War Enterprise
The Veil at Valcour by Diane Carey - Given her extensive experience with sailing ships of this time period, very few authors could've taken on the task of telling this wonderful story about the Sloop-of-War Enterprise, a ship seized by colonial sailors from the British during the American Revolutionary war. Although I have little clue of the majority of the terminology used in this story, I found the story itself to be truly inspirational.
Captain Osborne B. Hardison commanding the U.S.S. Enterprise
World of Strangers by Diane Carey - Here, Diane Carey takes on the task of telling a brief story of the USS Enterprise during WWII in the Pacific. She takes and accomplishes that task quite well as she turns not so much to telling the tale of the combat itself but to the human side of the equation and the terrible sacrifices and loss this war brought on. Only one minor point of contention on my part, military time doesn't work as it is portrayed in this great story.
Captain Robert April commanding the USS Enterprise NCC-1701
Though Hell Should Bar the Way by Greg Cox - Having read every Trek novel written by this author up to the date of this publication, I believe I can say unequivocally that Greg Cox's stories in the Star Trek universe are absolutely exceptional and a complete joy to read! In this short story we meet Captain Robert April as he's leading his ship and crew at breakneck speed to get to Tarsus IV in time before a famine starts taking lives. Along the way though, they encounter Klingon commander Kor and his orders to stop any and all Federation vessels from approaching Tarsus IV.
Captain Christopher Pike commanding the USS Enterprise NCC-1701
Conflicting Natures by Jerry Oltion - I've only had the please so far of reading one of Jerry Oltion's previous stories, but I can definitely say now that he has an excellent writing style that I enjoy. Here he tells the hilarious story of Captain Pike, after engaging Klingons having to pick up an Eremoid that wishes to "observe" the crew in their day to day routine. The camaraderie of the crew really sticks out in this one.
Captain James T. Kirk commanding the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 & NCC-1701-A
The Avenger by Michael Jan Friedman - Star Trek's most prolific author proffers up this tale of Captain Kirk on a mission to see that peace talks between the Draqqi and the Iach'tu end successfully. Early in his career, Kirk had been briefly stationed on Draqqana and of course, there is a woman involved. There is a murder of a high profile Draqqi in the midst of the peace talks and Kirk pairs up with that woman who is now the chief Draqqi investigator. This story is in quite good keeping with Michael Jan Friedman's excellent style of writing.
Captain Will Decker commanding the USS Enterprise NCC-1701
Night Whispers by Diane Duane - Although it had been quite some time since Diane Duane had visited Gene Roddenberry's universe, with this story she makes an excellent return. We visit Captain Will Decker as he is in the process of overseeing the refit of the USS Enterprise right before the events depicted in Star Trek The Motion Picture. Here, Captain Decker must solve the puzzle of some strange script written into the LCARS computer system recently installed on the Enterprise.
Captain Spock commanding the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A
Just Another Little Training Cruise by A. C. Crispin - This fine author had also taken a lengthy respite from Gene Roddenberry's universe and makes a triumphant return with this outstanding story. Here she tells the tale of Spock, the Captain of the Enterprise as she is being used as an Academy training vessel and the beginnings of his "feelings" toward Saavik. We learn when and where they met and this tale beautifully sets up the events in the exceptional novel, "Vulcan's Heart" by Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz.
Captain John Harriman commanding the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-B
Shakedown by Peter David - As one of Star Trek's premier authors, Peter David's stories are well told, thought provoking, captivating, humorous and oft times, quite compelling as is the case with this outstanding story of Captain Harriman. "Somehow" he's been captured by the Romulans and is being interrogated by Rokan, the Tal Shiar's top interrogator. As is with the majority of Peter David's work, this story was a true pleasure to read.
Captain Rachel Garret commanding the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C
Hour of Fire by Robert Greenberger - In this exciting and invigorating tale, Robert Greenberger takes us to a point early in Captain Rachel Garret's command of the Enterprise. She and the Enterprise are on a mission to find an M Class planet for a race known as the Warin. What is especially poignant about this story is her interaction with the crew and then how that crew deals with the emergency that arises. This story was extremely enjoyable.
Captain Jean Luc Picard commanding the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D & NCC-1701-E
The Captain and the King by John Vornholt - One of the best series of books to have come out to date was the Captain's Table series and this story is a real treat as John Vornholt revisits this mythical place. This is an interesting tale of how Picard helped a "would be" King of Andoria make the ultimate sacrifice. {ssintrepid}
ST: Enterprise Logs.......2002-05-19
Star Trek: Enterprise Logs edited by Carol Greenberg is an anthology of adventure and exploration spanning six centuries and ten captains of one proud tradition the appellation known as Enterprise. I found that this book to be both historical and imaginative. Historical in the sense that one Enterpise fought in the Revolutionary War for America's freedom to the command of Jean-Luc Picard on U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-D.
This book covers both seafaring to spacefaring vessels all with the same name and a compelling story with each captain trusted to bring her to battle and back home again. As this is an anthology, the captains are very interesting to read about. Captains Irrael Daniel Dickerson, Osborne B. Hardison, Robert April, Christopher Pike, James T. Kirk, Will Decker, Spock, John Harriman, Rachel Garrett and Jean-Luc Picard are all accounted for here with an interesting tale to tell about the ship they command.
Since this is an anthology we have different authors lending their expertise to each story giving the reader a feel that each captain is speaking. The authors are: Diane Carey, Greg Cox, Jerry Oltion, Michael Jan Friedman, Diane Duane, A.C. Crispin, Peter David, Robert Greenberger, and John Vorholt.
I found this book to be very enjoyable, readable with a flowing narrative, and intriguingly engrossing. The first two stories were right out of America History focusing on the captain of the ship, thus, giving the reader insights into the noteworthiness of these historical figures. As the other stories, imagination rules the story with a heavy dose of the humanity.
The book is a very fast read with enjoyable adventure.
Just the perfect book while cooling your heels..........2001-05-31
...stuck on jury duty (sigh). Read this last summer (2000) and enjoyed practically all the submissions tracing the history of the Enterprise Captains, from the first Enterprise (during the Revolutionary War) to Picard. Some very imaginative entries, including Capt. Harriman (Enterprise-B) and Capt. Garrett (Enterprise-C). Highly recommended...
I was disappointed in this book :-(.......2001-01-04
I found this book when I was buying the Captains table book. It was one of those, "if you like this, you'll like these too" lists Amazon gives us. Hey! It looked great! Pictures of three Starships, a Revolutionary war schooner, and a Aircraft Carrier! "The History of the Enterprise!" It says. I am a Star Trek Fan. I have been from when I was very young. I watch and read Trek books for the adventure and action. There is very little of that in these stories. These stories seem to be morality plays more than adventure stories. I feel it only deserves 2 stars because only 2 of the stories in this book are OK. And they are stories about the Starship captains you hardly ever hear about. Lastly, these are extremely short, short stories. Not barely worth the price. Before you buy on-line, go see it in a store, and look it over and read some of it. Then decide.
The history of the past and the future!.......2000-09-30
Since reading stories about Captain April and briefly viewing captains Pike, Decker, Harriman, and Garrett, I have wanted to know more about them. "Enterprise Logs" does not disappoint. The tales of Decker and Harriman (especially the latter) were the most enjoyable (5 stars). Garrett's story was close behind. And, although I read little non-fiction, I found the based-on-fact stories on captains Dickenson and Hardison to be entertaining and exciting (4 stars). I found the stories of Kirk and Picard, the ones of whom we are most knowledgeable, to be weakest yet worthy of reading. I am not a fan of the "Captains' Table" books as I find it difficult to imagine Picard telling war stories, even to his equals; still, the story was very good (3 1/2 stars). Read it and enjoy the history of the past and the future!

At Le Bernardin, seafood is always the star. From the day this posh restaurant opened in New York City, it was recognized for revolutionizing the way fish was prepared. Chef-owner Gilbert Le Coze and his sister, Maguy, quickly gained an exalted four-star rating for their original, impeccable, exquisite food, which you can now reproduce at home using their recipes.
Le Coze avoided using classic sauces because, lacking professional training, he did not know how to make them. Instead, he created Carpaccio of Tuna, a kind of paper-thin sashimi on a plate, Baked Sea Urchins, and Roast Monkfish on a Bed of Sautéed Savory Cabbage with Bacon, a dish that is both rustic and rich. When Gilbert died in 1994, at just 48, his chef de cuisine, Eric Ripert, stepped in and has continued to dazzle with his own fish dishes. Ripert, who had a classical chef's training, is especially innovative in his Poached Lobster in Lemongrass-Ginger Bouillon. If following three pages of meticulously clear instructions for handling the lobsters, puréeing their coral, and much more is not for you, try the salmon fillets served in a magically cream-free but creamy lemon sauce, the Roast Cod Niçoise flavored with basil, capers, and black olives, or the saffron-and-orange-perfumed Fish Soup.
Le Bernardin's desserts are famous, too. A reasonably competent cook can create ecstasy with the Bitter Chocolate Soufflé Cake, lavish with dark chocolate, butter, eggs, and just one tablespoon of flour.
If you read mostly cookbooks, the spirited dialogue between Ripert and Maguy, their anecdotes of culinary adventures, and characteristically Gallic commentary may divert you. Typically, Maguy says, "My favorite way to eat calamari is with a nice green salad. How American!" Seems the French only ate a lettuce salad with meats until nouvelle cuisine came along in the 1970s, and Maguy still considers it an aberration with seafood. Just as her taste has changed, this book may open you to new experiences with seafood. --Dana Jacobi
Book Description
Le Bernardin, New York's only four-star seafood restaurant, is renowned not only for its impeccable cuisine but also for its understated elegance. Now the Le Bernardin experience is made accessible to everyone in more than 100 meticulously formulated and carefully tested recipes for all courses, from appetizers through dessert.
The food served in Le Bernardin's beautiful dining room is as subtle and refined as any in the world, and because fish and shellfish are often best turned out quickly and simply, the recipes in this book can be reproduced by any home cook.
Maguy Le Coze traces the origins of Le Bernardin's "simplicity" to her late brother, Gilbert, the restaurant's legendary cofounder and first chef: "Gilbert was not a classically trained chef," she says. "He had never been to culinary school. When he cooked, he made things he liked, and things he knew. He focused on the quality and freshness of the fish. He made nages and vinaigrettes because he'd never made a hollandaise or a béarnaise. He focused on flavors that were delicate, subtle, herb-infused."
Today, Chef Eric Ripert carries on that tradition with dishes such as Poached Halibut on Marinated Vegetables, Pan-Roasted Grouper with Wild Mushrooms and Artichokes, and Grilled Salmon with Mushroom Vinaigrette. And, of course, there are the desserts for which Le Bernardin is also so well known--from Chocolate Millefeuille to Honeyed Pear and Almond Cream Tarts.
Essential to the experience of dining at Le Bernardin and to the Le Bernardin Cookbook are the dynamic and charming personalities of Maguy Le Coze and Eric Ripert, whose lively dialogue and colorful anecdotes shine from these pages as brightly as the recipes themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Four star lengthy recipes.......2007-02-15
If you have a large kitchen staff in your home, or 2-3 days to prepare a meal this is the book for you. The recipes are impractical for anyone at home and I don't understand why they would make a cookbook with such lengthy and involved directions and call it four star "simplicity"
Le Bernardin Cookbook.......2005-08-21
A lovely book from one of our favorite New York restaurants. The recipes are flavorful and delicious.
One of the Best Seafood Restaurant Books.......2005-05-25
`Le Bernardin Cookbook' by highly regarded seafood chef Eric Ripert and restaurateur Maguy Le Coze (cofounder of the restaurant with her brother Gilbert) is the first case where I wished I could give a half a star. In many ways, it is a classic restaurant cookbook which is better than average in many ways, but I usually need a little more than `better than average' to give five stars. In comparison to Rob Feenie's `Lumiere' cookbook I reviewed yesterday, `Le Bernardin' exceeds expectations in the following ways:
It is almost entirely a cookbook for all sorts of fish, based primarily on classic French recipes. This means that if you had a shelf of 100 famous restaurant cookbooks and wanted a recipe for fish, you could immediately go to either this book or Bob Kinkead's recent restaurant book, depending on whether you wanted something from Brittany or Baltimore. Oddly, this book also shares with the Kinkead book the fact that at least one recipe author (Bob Kinkead and Gilbert Le Coze) for each book was entirely self-taught.
The story behind this book is about as endearing and as interesting as they come. `Le Bernardin' was originally opened in Paris by brother and sister Le Coze in 1972, after the siblings spend their early life together helping their parents run a struggling little restaurant on the coast of Brittany. After an initial splash and failure based on no experience, they ultimately succeeded in Paris. They followed this with opening the Manhattan restaurant in 1986, just as culinary consciousness in New York made it worth their while to open a restaurant which specialized in fish. All of this would be very ordinary if it were not for the incredible affection brother and sister had for one another, ended with the death of Gilbert at the age of forty-eight in 1994, just a year or two after hiring classically trained Eric Rippert as executive chef at the Manhattan restaurant.
The recipes, many the creation of unschooled Gilbert, tend to be much more original than what you may find in the standard fish cookbooks by Mark Bittman, James Beard, and Alan Davidson. None of the classic bistro recipes for mussels (which you will find in Tony Bourdain's `Les Halles' book) are here. While some tend to the involved, fish recipes tend to be involved primarily in the preparation of stocks, nages, butter sauces and court bouillons. If you get the techniques for doing these things well, many of the recipes devolve into very simple preparations, befitting the generally fast cooking times for fish.
Each recipe has a separate headnote from each author, and the counterpoint between them is almost worth the price of the book in itself. It is not uncommon for Madame Le Coze to really hate a recipe that Monsieur Rippert has just praised up and down the avenue. She usually comes around in the end, but the honesty is so unexpected that you start looking forward to contretemps in the next recipe dialogue.
The recipes are organized in a very satisfactory way for a restaurant book on fish. The first chapter is an especially good collection of recipes for the basics. These are for the stocks, nages, butter sauces and court bouillons cited above. This is one of the few cookbooks I can thing of which includes a shrimp, lobster, and clam stock recipe. And, near and dear to my heart is the fact that the chicken stock recipe cooks for only three hours! The following eight chapters on fish dishes is just a little mixed, in that two chapters represent courses, `Salads' and `Appetizers' while six chapters represent the techniques `Raw Fish', `Poached and Steamed Fish', `Sautéed Fish', `Roasted Fish', `Grilled Fish', and `Shellfish'. The penultimate chapter on `Big Parties' gives seven over the top recipes for entertaining, most giving eight servings rather than the usual four to six servings. The last chapter on desserts seems relatively long, giving 31 recipes, including three for basics such as pastry cream, hazelnut-almond cream, ganache, and sweet pastry dough. With all the pastry books available, you will not be buying this book for the desserts, but it does add to the book's value. As usual, some of the dessert recipes are quite involved.
There are no chapters or separate recipes for vegetables, as all the vegetable side dishes are included in the recipe for the seafood. This means many of the fish recipes may not be as complicated as they seem from their length if you removed the vegetable garnish, but that would take away the cachet of serving a dish as done at the great and famous Le Bernardin!
Ultimately, this book deserves more than four stars because it is a restaurant cookbook that is more valuable than a source of instructive recipes to read. It has lots of great fish recipes that can be made by an amateur at home, as long as you have access to high quality ingredients. My only disappointment in reading the book is the feeling that there is simply no way I would be able to get the kind of fresh fish used by Le Bernardin unless I opened a restaurant in an Atlantic seaport.
The mantra for this book that should be intoned as you look for a recipe is to respect the differences between the fishes. Things that work for skate will not work for tuna and vice versa. Respect the fish and you will be rewarded.
Great food, surprisingly achievable.......2003-09-11
Unlike some other reviewers, I've always found Le Bernardin and its staff to be very warm and accommodating. That feeling comes through in the text and personal reminiscences included in this book.
The big surprise for me was how very well written the recipes are. Although there is plenty here for the over-achieving home chef, well over half of the recipes can accommodate a harried schedule and/or moderate talents in the kitchen. If you scan through the book and follow Le Bernardin's three-course format, you can put together an unbelievably elegant dinner in a reasonable amount of time.
Four-Star Simplicity with Seafood.......2002-12-05
I'm really into seafood, and this is the cookbook for that genre.
The sophistication of taste and presentation is the ultimate maxization of the fresh seafood.
One is impressed instantly upon perviewing the recipes and trying them of the intense experience this chef has had with the ingredients and prep techniques.
Four-star chefbooks are typically intimidating due to all the ingredients and steps, but here it's minimal, yet turns out utmost in culinary heights.
Try these, they'll be knockout dishes! Pan-Roasted Grouper with Wild Mushrooms and Artichokes (served with unbelievable pork jus); Roast Monkfish on Savoy Cabbage and Bacon-Butter Sauce; Black Bass in Cabbage Packages with Purple Mustard Sauce; Yellowtail Snapper with Garden Vegetables.
Accompaniments are worth paper as well, with monster dinner dessert of "Earl Grey Tea and Mint Soup with Assorted Fruit;Gruyere and Potato Cakes.
Tough one to match in my extensive collection!
