8 CDs. Approximately 9.5 hours. The bloody corpses stashed in the broom closet of the Seattle School District building were lovingly entwined. It looked like a classic crime of passion to Detective J.P. Beaumont -- especially when Pete Kelsey admitted that his slaughtered wife was an A student in the fine art of adultery. But Peter swore he had nothing to do with the two brutal deaths. Beaumont's gut instinct told him to believe the sinned-upon widower, but he never dreamed that Pete might be harboring a secret hotter than extra-marital sex . . . and more lethal than murder . . .

Overview of the history of life.......2004-06-12
Some parents may want to be aware the book presents earth's material from an evolutionary perspective. Although I personally do not think that the scientific case for biological evolution has been definitive proven, I use this book as a supplement to our homeschool curriculum to expose my kids to the basic ideas of evolution. I want them to respect this perspective and not lampoon it. And this book is a great way to introduce kids to the foundational ideas. Parents who do hold an evolutionary perspective will probably appreciate the book for the same reason.
My only slight criticism of this book is that the book gives minimal discussion to the multiple extinction and replacement events that have happened throughout the history of the earth. This is an intriguing issue of earth's history which very few textbooks give any discussion to.
My other criticism is that the book doesn't clearly differentiate between modern humans and hominids, their differing behaviors and culture. But, again, this isn't unusual. Many science textbooks don't seem to make this differentiation either.

Human Prehistory in Fiction
Charles De Paolo Manufacturer: McFarland & Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0786414170 |
Book Description
What was the world like for people thousands of years ago? How can we know? Through fiction? This is a work of literary criticism, and more. It begins with a discussion of the problem of authenticity and then considers twelve pieces of fiction that depict human prehistory:H.G. Wells' The Island of Doctor Moreau, Pierre Boulle's The Planet of the Apes, Jules Verne's The Village in the Treetops, Edgar Rice Burroughs' The Land That Time Forgot, the struggle for legitimacy in Wells' "The Grisly Folk," the Tasmanian analogue in Lester Del Rey's "The Day Is Done," William Golding's The Inheritors, "the promise of humanity" in Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey, the theme of "a god among the heathen" in Wells' "The Lord of the Dynamos" and other works, Jean Auel's The Clan of the Cave Bear, J.H. Rosny-Aîné's Quest for Fire, and Wells' The Time Machine: An Invention.
A final chapter considers the paleoanthropologist as literary critic.

SWORD OF ROLAND.......2000-06-25
It begins on a Crusade in the Holy Land, and Sir Hugh and his companions are betrayed to the Saracans, by their Greek "allies," and slaughtered to the last man. Only one man survives, Sir Hugh--and with the aid of a mysterious helper he gains the long lost, legendary sword of Roland--Durandal. And he swears to avenge the death of his comrads.
This book was originally written as 3 short stories in Adventure Magazine in the 1920's and 30's, and originally combined into a novel in the 1930's. Now re-released here, it has stood the test of time very well. Worth mentioning--this book is a beatuiful new release, wonderfully illustrated. The author is Harold Lamb, who was not only a respected historian, but was also familiar with the places he used as the settings for his story. He spoke the native languages and had visited the sites he portrayed in this book.
One of the finest features of the book is the sense of fate, and determination that fills not just Sir Huge, but all the characters in this novel. As he is fleeing from his Greek enemies--with the aid of Moslem Arabs--he encounters the outriders of the invading Mongol horde--the soldiers of Genghis Khan, lead by the amazing Subadai. And because of his own quarrels, Sir Hugh joins the Horde--A Crusader in the Horde--and rises in rank because of his own abilities.

A Revolution In Eating: How the Quest for Food Shaped America (Arts and Traditions of the Table)
James E. McWilliams Manufacturer: Columbia University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0231129920 |
Book Description
Sugar, pork, beer, corn, cider, scrapple, and hoppin' John all became staples in the diet of colonial America. The ways Americans cultivated and prepared food and the values they attributed to it played an important role in shaping the identity of the newborn nation. In A Revolution in Eating, James E. McWilliams presents a colorful and spirited tour of culinary attitudes, tastes, and techniques throughout colonial America.
Confronted by strange new animals, plants, and landscapes, settlers in the colonies and West Indies found new ways to produce food. Integrating their British and European tastes with the demands and bounty of the rugged American environment, early Americans developed a range of regional cuisines. From the kitchen tables of typical Puritan families to Iroquois longhouses in the backcountry and slave kitchens on southern plantations, McWilliams portrays the grand variety and inventiveness that characterized colonial cuisine. As colonial America grew, so did its palate, as interactions among European settlers, Native Americans, and African slaves created new dishes and attitudes about food. McWilliams considers how Indian corn, once thought by the colonists as "fit for swine," became a fixture in the colonial diet. He also examines the ways in which African slaves influenced West Indian and American southern cuisine.
While a mania for all things British was a unifying feature of eighteenth-century cuisine, the colonies discovered a national beverage in domestically brewed beer, which came to symbolize solidarity and loyalty to the patriotic cause in the Revolutionary era. The beer and alcohol industry also instigated unprecedented trade among the colonies and further integrated colonial habits and tastes. Victory in the American Revolution initiated a "culinary declaration of independence," prompting the antimonarchical habits of simplicity, frugality, and frontier ruggedness to define American cuisine. McWilliams demonstrates that this was a shift not so much in new ingredients or cooking methods, as in the way Americans imbued food and cuisine with values that continue to shape American attitudes to this day.
