Aw come on, Travis, you can do it! Poor fellow has to pull out all the stops in order to salvage the poor young thing.

Fort Lauderdale, the Busted Flush, this is a Travis McGee mystery. Mike Gibson had a service injury and Travis did not, and so Travis is willing to leave Florida to go to NYC to see Mike's sister, Nina, who has recently lost her fiance. The fiance, Howard Plummer, was the victim of a mugging-- assailant unknown. Howard had worked for Armister-Hawes, an investment bank. He had complained to others that he had not been able to see Charles Armister to talk with him, and that the bank was undergoing divestment without any strategy evident to make up for the lack of holding a growth portfolio.

Travis's former client, Connie Thatcher, informs him that she knows the sister-in-law of Charles Armister, Terry Drummond. He discovers that Terry Drummond hasn't been able to see Charles, either, and she would like to do this to encourage him to return to living with her sister. At the present it seems that Charles is living with his secretary and his lawyer. It is feared that he is somehow under their thumb. Travis McGee certainly does find himself in the midst of a nightmare as he undergoes a stay at a mental hospital where Charles Armister was treated.

The plotting of the mystery is very tight, very good.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch.......2005-11-23

This is the second in the Travis McGee series, though it doesn't place itself chronologically -- ie, it doesn't refer to the events of the first book, and it does refer to other adventures, as if it's just another in McGee's long life. However, the next book in the series, "A Purple Place for Dying," does take place right after this one, so there is an advantage to reading them in order.

In "Nightmare" Travis goes to New York. If you can't deal with that, then this one's not for you, but otherwise it's a knockout. The suspense is great, the philosophizing feels amazingly current, and MacDonald clearly knows New York. The book is great mix of retro setting and modern-feeling plotting and characterization. If anything, it's smoother than "The Deep Blue Good-By," since it doesn't need to introduce anything.

The Travis McGee series is terrific. I'm still reading my way through it, but I haven't found any reason not to go in order. "Nightmare in Pink" is great.

5 out of 5 stars McGee in NYC.......2005-10-25

If there is a weak link in the chain of Travis McGee novels, I have yet to find it. MacDonald's "Nightmare in Pink" is yet another great tale in the long list of books of the McGee cycle, and I have read more than a dozen of them. This one has the same driving pace, magnetic and realistic characters, and acerbic wit as any other in the series. What makes it personally enjoyable is that it is set in my hometown of New York City! He seems at home here, in spite of what he says. I wish he'd hung around for a few more novels

5 out of 5 stars Mcgee has a Nightmare in Pink........2005-05-01

Unlike the first Travis McGee novel, The Deep Blue Goodbye, which is set in Fort Lauderdale, McGee's stomping grounds and the place he likes to call home, Nightmare in Pink takes him to the Big Apple, where he is a sailor away from the sea and not altogether comfortable. His mission is to help the sister of a friend who finds herself with a dead boyfriend and ten thousand dollars she thinks are ill gotten gains.

With some shrewd detective work McGee determines that the boyfriend stumbled on to the scheme of a lawyer who is bilking his rich client of millions of dollars. McGee makes connections with the client's family, who commission him to find out what is happening and protect the family and estate. Easier said than done.

McGee thinks he has the case well in hand only to find he has been careless. His carelessness almost kills him. From the moment McGee finds himself trapped in his Nightmare in Pink to the exciting conclusion, the action is fast and furious with many innocent dead bodies along the way.

As is typical of a McGee mystery, loose ends are not always neatly secured. Sometimes bad things happen to the good guys. McGee is nothing is not a realist and he accepts what he must and has the scars to show for it. He is a survivor who will live to fight another day.

All the Travis McGee novels are quick reads and page turners. Once a reader has been initiated into the McGee philosophy and lifestyle with The Deep Blue Goodbye and Nightmare in Pink, the rest of the series is sure to be an attractive alternative to watching tv for diversion and entertainment.

Wear your gear. Bring your blades. Back your family. Fight for your life.

MLK High School has collapsed into Kung Fu High School--where Jen B. and her brother, Cue, belong to one of two gangs still standing against the puppet principal and the drug kingpin who pulls his strings. Cousin Jimmy--a world-champion martial arts master of mythic stature--arrives in town after swearing to his mother that he'll never fight again. His rep precedes him and everyone's itching to see him "kicked in"--Kung Fu's brutal initiation ritual. But he won't break his vow and defend himself, so Cue steps in when things go too far. Soon, a surprise counterstrike sends Kung Fu spinning toward one final, raging battle. Teachers flee, students break out full weaponry, and Jimmy must make a decision that will brand him a coward--or a hero.

Was it only a year ago that Ryan Gattis' KUNG FU HIGH SCHOOL was published? It seems like eternity, for such was its impact on literature that nowadays I think of the world of writing as divided into two parts, BRG and ARG, before and after Ryan Gattis. Just as his predecessor, William Gaddis, launched his majestic THE RECOGNITIONS on an unsuspecting American public in 1955, the young Gattis, whoi had written only one book before, a limited edition not even published in his own country, hit the ground running telling the story of Jen B., a heroic teen in an American high school only slightly magnified from our own. Gangs rule the campus, and everyone gets "kicked in" as a matter of course by martial arts specialists, for in MLK High 95 per cent of the student body know some sort of ju jitsu or aikido or whatever.

The other five percent, Jen B. explains, are just super big and can get by on sheer size. Into this stressful environment her sexy cousin Jimmy Chang moves into town, and since he made a sacred vow to his mother never to fight again, he gets beat up royally and Jen's brother Cue gets mixed up in the melee. In my town, people have worn out their copies of KUNG FU HIGH SCHOOL memorizing the big fight scenes, and at Burning Man earlier this month several "rival" associations of artists re-staged some of Gattis' bloodiest, most organ-popping moments. It was like having Armageddon explode in your school locker.

Already a cult classic, KUNG FU HIGH SCHOOL will attain FIGHT CLUB status when the inevitable movie is made, or I don't know, maybe by then people will have tired of the whole high school is a battlefield metaphor. My friends and I speculate if Ryan and his brother ever were actually street type kids, or were they the onlookers who see more of the game then the kids who OD in the boys room. Jen B . is sort of a sweet cross between Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Aniston, however, she is only fifteen and it is a little pervy of Ryan to get into her head so thoroughly, especially her unlikely crush on her light-brown eyed cousin Jimmy Chang. He is like Christ in two respects, his initials (sort of like Faulkner's LIGHT IN AUGUST) and his willingness to sacrifice himself so that other kids could live a happy life.

                              5 out of 5 stars Kung Fu.......2006-02-02

This was an amazing book but it's not written for everyone. If your only experience with violence has been through the television- you may not get this book. But if you have a personal history with violence the details used to explain everything from the taste of blood, the sound of broken bone to the inability to comprehend/deal with death at a moment's notice, this book will make so much sense to you you'll want to weep.
I don't cry at books but this one almost got me. I was amazed to find out the author was a white male since the narrative is done through a half Chicana girl's perspective- and he nails it. I really loved how the character was built- violence and pain she understands, loyalty but love and basic human emotions that don't relate to pain- are a mystery she really doesn't have time for.
The showdown at the end, like any good story, has to happen- someone has to try to bring down the most corrupt and evil or how can we establish who is the hero? But what made me love this book was that it didn't make the evil stop at the drug king pin- it went all the way up from principal, to police to the media to the communtiy that pretended Kung Fu didn't exist.
The fight sequences are amazing- it's unsettling how true to life they are sometimes. I recommend this book to anyone with a pulse- I don't guarantee you'll like or understand it. But I loved it.

Kung Fu High School is not a book for everyone. Personally, I enjoyed reading it, but I felt like I really didn't take anything valuable from reading. Its entertainment value is high, but its intellectual level has more to be desired.

The story is narrated by Jen B. a student at Martin Luther King High, which has been given the nickname Kung Fu High since it has been taken over by a drug-running 23-year old senior named Ridley, and the social scene has devolved into about 6 different gangs. Each gang has its own leader, purpose, and style of fighting. Everything changes for Jen when her cousin, the legendary, undefeated fighter Jimmy Chang comes to live with them from out in the country. Jimmy comes to live with them after promising his mother to "never fight again." A promise which is tested in his first day at Kung Fu High. Soon, Jimmy's arrival at Kung Fu has tragic consequences for Jen and her family, and Kung Fu High turns into an all out martial arts battleground for control of the school.

The violence is very stylistic and very graphic. This book is definitely not for the weak of heart. Gattis goes a long way to make sure he describes the effects of each lethal hit inflected on a victim. However, throughout most of the book, I felt as if the main purpose of the book was just to be a vehicle for the author to write the most violent scenes possible. The backstories about Jen's family are not really followed all that well. And the sad part is that the story of her family could have been a great way to give the book some emotional quality, which it is completely lacking.

The book really feels like a 278-page comic book, but with very few pictures (yes, there are some pictures). The conversations just feel like flimsy bridges that the reader is crossing to get to the next fight scene. Is the book written well? Basically, yes. Gattis definitely does a good job of writing the book in the way that Jen would tell the story to someone. It is fairly impressive for a first novel, but hopefully Gattis will focus more on story in his next book. Because if the writer has a great story to back up the violence or bad things that happen plot-wise, it just makes the book that much better.

                              3 out of 5 stars Eh. .......2006-01-08

It wasn't bad, although many people will be turned off by the extreme violence in the book. Rather, it just wasn't that good.

First problem: The characters were not developed well enough to really be taken seriously. I felt no more sympathy for most of them than I would for Blanka or Ivy or Mitsurugi or any other character from a fighting game. As a result, their beatings were more exercise than they were tragedy. When this is juxtaposed against the realization that most of these people are 16-18 years old, it makes it hard to take it seriously as a literary work.

Second: The work has a pseudo-literary feel to it. You keep feeling like there is something more to it, but then when you try to dig, you find out that there really isn't anything underneath. Then, you feel really disappointed.

                              SPOILER WARNING:

Third: The death of Cue was handled badly. It should have been a more tragic moment. Instead, it almost felt farcical to me. Although you could argue that its arbitrary nature was intended to reflect the seeming randomness of violence and the sheer chance of life, or whatever, the fact remains that it felt empty. And, thus, we lost an interesting and fun character for nothing.

                              END SPOILER WARNING

These things combined to make the book feel a little vague and empty. The climax resolution also felt a little campy. Perhaps it doesn't even deserve three stars. To a large degree, it felt like a bad combination of one too many kung fu movies and American History X. The combined result felt like macho fantasy, rather than a real story.

So, read it if you are curious, or bored. It wasn't bad per se, it just wasn't good enough to earn a 4 from me. Worth reading once, probably, but don't buy it unless you hate your library or can't convince a friend to buy it for your reading circle.

3 out of 5 stars A Little Bit of the Old Ultraviolence.......2005-12-29

First time author Gattis has taken every parent and teenager's worst fears about high school to their dystopian extreme in this explosion of exploitation ultraviolence. The combination of Columbine massacre, and films like Battle Royale, Boyz in the Hood, Bloodsport, and every Hong Kong chop-socky flick ever, would make for hilariously campy fun were it not for the relentlessly grim tone and absolutely brutal violence. Unlike most teen violence films, where the carnage is distanced through the use of guns, knives, and other tools, here the violence is almost entirely fists and feet, and the ultrarealistic effect of every single blow is detailed in almost fetishistic detail.

The dehumanized teenagers of Martin Luther King High School have no dream other than surviving from one day to the next. The kids are a complete ethnic stew, whose only common feature is that they are too poor to escape being sent to MLK. Each belongs to one of six families (gangs), no one goes anywhere without a family member watching their back, and everyone is constantly trying to improve their martial arts skills. Going to school is an exercise in vigilance, as these kids literally dress for battle and everyone wears plain, all black clothing in order to disguise their affiliation from outsiders. Their school is run by Ridley, an eighth-year senior drug lord who controls four of the six families and has the school administration and teachers in his pockets.

The story is narrated by Jen, a sophomore whose brother is the leader of the "Waves", and whose cousin Jimmy is a world-renown grandmaster who has just returned from living in Kong Kong. His arrival coincides with Ridley's move to absorb the other two families and assume ultimate control, enabling him to expand his operation. Jimmy is a kind of classic martial arts character, the heroic good guy who has pledged never to fight again -- but of course, is forced to by the Darwinian world around him. Most of the book is a kind of slow burn of escalating violence leading to an inevitable massive bloodbath at the end. There are some other little glimpses into Jen's seeded throughout, her heartache for her dead mother, her attempts to deal with her invalid father, her forbidden yearning for Jimmy, and friendship with the cool free clinic doctor who patches up the family after their various fights. But these are all rather thinly done, and are mere background to the showdown with Ridley.

There's a lot of nice detail sprinkled throughout, such as the specifics of how to sew unobtrusive body armor into your everyday clothing, how to make four-edged knives, and so on. Much of this is illustrated through nifty rough diagrams and drawings inserted amidst the text. The most striking stylistic element of the book, however, is Gattis' ability to describe martial arts combat. You don't need to be a practitioner to follow the various moves as the bodies fly, skin is shredded, and bones break. It's all vividly done to well past the point of excess. It could easily be argued that all this graphic detail serves a raw, cautionary function, or one could just as easily argue that it desensitizes the reader. Either way, it'd be hard to argue that the scenes involving Jimmy aren't pretty cool, as he balletically devastates his teen opponents one after the other in the climax. Ultimately, the book doesn't leave the reader with much -- it's more of a concept with a thin thin story than a really engrossing tale. It the kind of material could make an excellent film in the right hands, but it could also make a really horrible film in the wrong ones.

Follow scientists and technicians of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory as they scramble to take the pulse of Big Island volcanoes in attempts to forewarn the public of impending eruption; progress is made, but complete understanding of these powerful forces of nature remains frustratingly elusive. Watch bad guys and harmless hippies as they cultivate illegal gardens of marijuana on the slopes of Kilauea Volcano, directly in the path of searing lava flows; some growers pay the ultimate price for their addiction to pot and its ill-gotten financial rewards. But above all, listen to Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess, as she manipulates success and failure, even life and death, of human intruders on her volcano home. When Pele Stirs paints a realistic picture of life on the Big Island, and will help the reader understand why Christian missionaries have failed to eliminate the worship of Pele, in spite of their efforts to do so for nearly two centuries.

4 out of 5 stars Volcano Adventure Tale.......2005-12-18

This book is a fun read! Those who know something about the "secret lives of real volcanologists" will recognize "germs of truth" (sometimes small germs) behind the tall tales of volcanic adventures that Duffield develops so well in this neat little book. Underlying the adventurous escapades of the heroes and villains in "When Pele Stirs" is a serious foundation of factual geology about the nature of Hawaiian volcanism and about the realities of life at a volcano observatory. Duffield describes accurately and well the hard work and uncertainties of normal times for volcanologists, as well as some delightfully exaggerated adventures and "high-jinks" that just might be based on real-life experiences and fantasies of the author!

5 out of 5 stars Improve your Hawaiian experience.......2005-01-10

I chose to read When Pele Stirs while on vacation in Hawaii. It was a perfect book for being not only entertained and amused, but also educated about the natural and social history of that volcanic paradise. Specifically, how the volcanic islands form through time, and the comparison between the views of nature held in native Hawaiian legends and by the scientists who strive to understand and predict volcanic eruptions. Another fascinating aspect of the book was its description of marijuana growing on the island and the interaction between the dropout hippie growers, the local underworld marketers, and the scientists trying to identify these outlaws to warn them about impending doom. Duffield does a masterful job of drawing from his first-hand experiences as a geologist at the Hawaii Volcano Observatory and presenting this information through a variety of fascinating characters. He has created a gripping plot that cuts back and forth between the exploits of the various characters we come to love, dislike, or laugh at, but always care about. I highly recommend this book, particularly for anyone who's ever set foot on any of the Hawaiian Islands or who is simply interested in an entertaining and educational read. I am a geologist so I was with Duffield every step of the way in his geologic descriptions, but he keeps the technical jargon to a minimum and gently educates the reader in a way that will leave him feeling like a volcanologist when he finishes the book.

4 out of 5 stars Life and Love on the fire mountain.......2004-04-21

Life in the Hawai'i Volcano Observatory: what most people would consider as an exciting life on the brink, is boring routine at times. At least as long as Pele, the hawaiian godess of volcanoes, sleeps. This is the experience of the book's heros at first.

But then the godess awakes. And again the volcanologists have to face all those difficulties trying to interpret the seismic and other geophysical data. And again, men and women alike have to go out to remeasure the volcano to find out, how serious the godess is ...

But not only volcanologists roam the slopes of the volcano. There are those hippies Jeb und Valerie that grow hemp for their own consumption. And there is Hak, the respected member of the Rotary Club, who also grows hemp, however in grand style for 'export' to the mainland ...

Finally a fissure eruption starts. And while the tourists enjoy the spectacle of the lava fountains, the volcanologists are puzzles by the volcano's behavior. And also the hemp farmer find themselves suddenly in the hot center of action ... and that in the real meaning of the word!

The author, Wenell Duffield, knows what he's talking about, because he has workes as an employee of the USGS at the Hawaii Volcano Oberservatory. Hence this book provides 'intimate' glimpses into the life of volcanologists working at a volcano observatory. To the present writer, he pays too much attention to the sex-life of his heros, given the fact that this a science thriller. Nevertheless (or because of that?!): this book is worthy reading for those interested in the work and life of volcanologist.

                                          Book Description

From trading recipes with the bad boys of American beer to drinking Czech-Mex cerveza in Tijuana and hanging out in the beer gardens of Africa, Charlie Papazian has seen, and tasted, it all.

Microbrewed Adventures is your shotgun seat to unique, eccentric and pioneering craft-brews and the fascinating people who create them. Travel with Charlie as he crisscrosses America and circles the globe in search of the most flavor-packed beers. Along with discovering the master brews of Bavaria, secret recipes for mead and the traditional beers of Zimbabwe, you will find lessons on proper beer tasting and read interviews with American master brewers including those of Dogfish Head, Magic Hat, Rogue Ales, Stone Brewing and Brooklyn Brewery. Charlie also includes special homebrew recipes inspired by the innovative brewers who are making some the best beer in the world.

Charlie Papazian is the homebrewer apostle best known for authoring "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing". He is also the founding president of the American Homebrewers Association and the originator of the Great American Beer Festival. In many ways he might be considered the father of the American microbrew renaissance that began in the 1980s and exploded in the 1990s (a good deal of the people who run and operate microbreweries started as homebrewers, and a number of them got their start with "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing"). He is certainly very adventurous and a wonderful beer enthusiast. Though "only" an amateur homebrewer who brews 5 gallon batches at a time like the rest of us, his stature, position, and impressive resume has opened doors to him all over the world to lecture, visit, and just have a beer. This book is a diary of sorts of these travels over the last twenty-five or so years.

Though the book is presented as a travelogue, it is not organized chronologically. It is divided into three parts: "Microbrewed: American Style", "Microbrewed: The World", and "Recipes". The first two sections are divided into chapters, which are further divided into short topics such as a visit to a brewery or to see a brewmaster. These short topics are only two to six pages long, so the book is very easy to read in spurts, or during brief interludes such as on a lunch break or on a plane.

What made this book special to me is that almost every short topic ends with a recipe that covers the kind of beverage discussed in that topic. These recipes were either given to Charlie by a brewmaster he visited, or (most often the case) a recipe he came up with that best approximates the brew. The recipes are all formulated for five gallon batches, and they are presented in both all-grain (with instructions for step-infusion) and mash/extract versions; in short, both the novice and experienced brewer can enjoy making theses brews. About a quarter of the book is recipes (the book cover states there are more than 50 recipes, but I didn't count them).

Mr. Papazian has a very conversational style of writing that works very well for this kind of book. The way the work is presented as a series of short pieces makes you feel almost as if you were sitting around the table swapping stories and sharing a homebrew with him.

Going in I thought I would enjoy most the first part because it covers many American microbreweries and the people who run them. Indeed Mr. Papazian has visited many of which I have heard and a good deal that I haven't and/or are no longer in business. He interviews the people who make the beer, and he has very good descriptions of the beers they make (not to mention the clone recipes he provides). Now that I reflect upon the book, I think I enjoyed the second part the most. Perhaps because of Mr. Papazian's celebrity status in the American beer world, his American brewery visits seem more like Norm walking into the Cheers bar where everyone knows his name and buys him a beer, so the events seem more about him. The stories related through his world travels are more about his journeys and adventures and the people he meets. I particulary enjoyed his visit to see Brother Adam of the Benedictine monks, or his visits to Cuba and Latvia to experience the passion of people who want to (and do) brew excellent beer with very limited resources.

Beer is certainly a huge part of Mr. Papazian's life and this book shows the riches (both material and spiritual) that it has bestowed upon him. But it is also very clear from his writings that beer is as much the journey as it is the destination. He shows his pride in connecting with a tradition that is thousands of years old, and how it connects him to people around the globe.

I purchased this book without any recommendations or reviews, and I only became aware of it as I was searching for homebrewing books. I paid particular attention to this book because I too own "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing" and I was familiar with Mr. Papazian's writing style. I also am making the move to all-grain brewing so the recipe section had particular appeal. Now that I have read the book, I will recommend this without hesitation to anyone who likes to brew. Even if you have only brewed one extract batch from a kit, you should have no trouble with the extract recipes here (if you haven't done any brewing yet, what are you waiting for?).

4 out of 5 stars Enjoy with your favorite home or craft brew.......2006-01-02

Like many, Papazian's "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing" helped introduce me to making my own beer. So when I saw his latest book at my local bookstore, I felt it deserved a look. In this volume, he brings his readers on a tour of the microbreweries and early beer festivals that helped create the commercial craft-brewing landscape that a youngster like me (27) can take for granted at times. The added bonus is that for each one of his anecdotes or reminiscences he includes a homebrew recipe (in both all-grain and malt extract versions). Often these recipes are recreations of early versions of classics like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or Redhook Ale (I can't wait to brew the recipe for the original, more flavorful Killian's). Other recipes push the envelope like a "Belgian" stout or Pumpernickel Rye Stout.

Much like Garrett Oliver's "Brewmaster's Table" or Michael Jackson's "Beer Companion", this book offers a spirited look into the delicious world of craft beer. Not a comprehensive history, but a fun romp through American craftbrewing past and present (as well as some recent international beer adventures). I highly enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great read w/ great recipes!.......2005-12-21

The book reinforces the fact that Charlie is the godfather of beer!

Charlie tells some fun tales about the rebirth of microbrewing in the U.S. while intermingling some fantastic recipes. I highly recommend this read for any beer enthusiast!
