Book Description

Sled dog racer Jessie Arnold's friends have acquired their dream-a lighthouse on the Alaskan Inside Passage-and invited everyone to a party where guests earn their keep by restoring the old building. With the company of old friends and a view to die for, this is one weekend Jessie won't soon forget-especially when guests start dying. The deaths seem like accidents, but soon Jessie realizes there's a killer loose on the island. Worse yet, the killing spree might not be over-even though the party certainly is.

3 out of 5 stars Not Henry's Best, But Still Welcome.......2007-02-14

Iditarod champ Jesse Arnold is back in this rather tepid tale of intrigue at a friend's lighthouse, where she has agreed to join the rehab work crew after an injury forced her off the sled dog racing circuit.

Antsy in her recovery period and more than a bit afraid of her intimate feelings for her returned State Trooper boyfriend Alex, Jesse can hardly wait to get going, when she meets up with Karen Emerson, a frightened and extremely unlikeable character who claims to be running from a dangerous stalker.

Although Jesse dislikes Karen from the start (and so does the reader), she unaccountable lets the woman share her hotel room and accompany her to the lighthouse. There is a reason behind these moves, but it never made much sense, and thus greatly weakened the story, in this reviewer's view.

Once at the lighthouse, Jesse and the others quickly learn that things are not what they seem. Are they in danger? Are they being stalked as well? And who stole the gun?

You get the picture. Formulaic, a bit boring, but still Sue Henry, and therefore still worth reading--for those of us hooked on the series.

Sue Henry captivates the reader from page one to the end of the book. Her
characters are vivid and engaging. One gets a feel for Alaska, Jessie's life
style and her rekindled love affair. I recommend this book. Barbara Likens

3 out of 5 stars Sue Henry is great!.......2006-11-05

I really love Sue Henry's novels. This one is not one of my favorites but still a good book.

2 out of 5 stars A REAL LETDOWN FROM HER EARLIER WORKS.......2006-07-06

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO SUE HENRY? THIS BOOK IS SUCH A LET DOWN; I ALMOST THOUGHT THAT SHE HAD SOMEONE ELSE WRITE IT -- THE STORY IS FLAT AND THE SENTENCE STRUCTURES ARE CONFUSING. SORRY TO SAY THAT I REALLY CAN'T RECOMMEND THIS EVEN THOUGH I WANTED TO.

2 out of 5 stars Stranded on an Island.......2006-03-13

I have been a fan of Sue Henry since her first Jessie Arnold mystery. I was looking forward to reading her lastest adventure, but was very disappointed in this outing. The characters were one-dimensional. After discovering who the "bad guys" were I needed to reread part of the book for clarification. Sue Henry has a very annoying habit of foreshadowing at the end of many of her chapters. "...they hadn't a notion just how decidedly things could - and would - change in the next few hours." Even the relationship between Alex and Jessie seemed stilted. I realize it is difficult to create plausible mysteries for a civilian like musher Jessie Arnold, but this book tried too hard and accomplished too little.

Christopher Moore's demonically seductive storylines and zany, addictive brand of humor have earned him comparisons to Carl Hiaasen, Christopher Buckley, Douglas Adams, and other comic virtuosos. He's given us lovelorn vampires, marooned love goddesses, and addled sea beasts. Now discover his ingenious debut novel, in which we meet one of the most memorably mismatched pairs in the annals of literature.the good-looking one is one-hundred-year-old ex-seminarian and "road" scholar Travis O'Hearn. The green one is Catch, a demon with a nasty habit of eating most of the people he meets. Behind the fake Tudor facade of Pine cove, California, Catch sees a four-star buffet. Travis, on the other hand, thinks he sees a way of ridding himself of his toothy traveling companion. The winos, Neo-pagans, and deadbeat Lotharios of Pine Cove, meanwhile, have other ideas. And none of them is quite prepared when all hell breaks loose...

4 out of 5 stars Imagine Carl Hiaasen or Bill Fitzhugh Writing Horror/Supernatural Novels and You've Got Christopher Moore!.......2007-09-17

This is a very enjoyable mild horror adventure that once finished will have you looking for everything else Christopher Moore has ever published. This is his first novel and too be honest there are probably a few too many characters constantly popping up between chapters for very short scenes, that at times you do have to think who was this character again. This is the only reason I dropped my rating a star but we have to remember this was Moore's first book and more importantly Practical Demonkeeping is still a very interesting and unique good book!

The small Californian town of Pine Cove has had an interesting history but nothing can prepare the surreal eccentric townsfolk for two visitors that are about to separately arrive who are older than the town itself. One named Catch is accompanied by another named Travis who is also older than he looks by about 70 years. The looks of Catch aren't too important as the only time the townfolk are likely to see this ancient reptilian demon is when he is in eating mode and then they don't want to as they are likely to be on the menu. His reluctant travel companion has a plan to rid himself of his murderous demon and the answer lies within Pine Cove. Meanwhile a frustrated policeman is trying to find a man named Breeze to save his career but only Catch and Travis know where he is. A deadbeat husband is trying to get taken back, a hippie feminist wishes for an earth spirit to help her with her goals, a frustrated with life store owner is about to meet a stranger who's a Djinn with a score to settle since the days of King Solomon and will make his life a lot more exciting. Throw in a heap of other eccentric townsfolk and you've got one hell of a read!

If you like the surreal eccentric character novels also check out the authors Bill Fitzhugh (Pest Control's a great place to start), Carl Hiassen (Stormy Weather's as good as any other), Dave Barry (Tricky Business) and Max Barry (Syrup).

5 out of 5 stars Twisted in all the right ways!.......2007-09-12

This was a great book. Very sick and twisted, but in all the right ways. It made me laugh out loud at parts, and I absolutely couldn't help loving the demon Catch (despite the fact that he eats people on a regular basis!). Very witty, totally enjoyable. This is the first Moore book I have read, and I will defintely be reading more!

          4 out of 5 stars Demons.......2007-07-12

Another original take on a monster book - good even for those with a weak stomach - he has a way of making even the gruesome & scary seem like fun

4 out of 5 stars Needs more demon.......2007-06-25

This was the second Moore book that I've read (A Dirty Job: A Novel being the first). While overall I enjoyed this book, I felt that it suffered from not having a clear main character that the story could revolve around. This was compounded by developing characters that were "removed" in short order. By far the funniest parts of the book are those with the demon and ultimately there were not enough of those to go around.

          5 out of 5 stars Very funny.......2007-06-03

Okay, now I was not splitting my sides laughing at these books of his but the concept, the outrageous titles and his very good writing made me buy all of them. I will say they made me smile the whole time I was reading them, they touched my heart and I can't wait for the next one. I did order all of them and I have not been disappointed in any of them. He makes you believe these things exist in his world. Has funny characters. I like them.

By the age of twenty-two, he had survived three brutal years of warfare, serving as commanding officer for a behind-the-lines reconnaissance platoon. Now at thirty-one, he was the Senior Project Leader for the super secret think tank NATech, and he was very good at what he did. Everyone knew and no one doubted that within a few years he would be the Director.

Instead of being a respected leader in an organization for good, he was the dependent refugee of an outlawed resistance, one the world government wanted to destroy.

                Book Description

The basis for an action adventure animé television series to launch in 2005—the first of five novels introducing the world of Arachnia, for 9-12-year-olds—this is the story of a boy and his spider. Only this spider happens to be ten feet tall.

When thirteen-year-old Hunter Steele chases a spider into a mysterious cave, he ends up falling straight down to the center of the Earth, into the fantastic subterranean world of Arachnia. Here, he discovers a small band of elite warriors struggling to survive and to save Arachnia from the attack of giant insect mutants. The warriors are kids, just like Hunter, each fighting with the help of their own three-ton, ten-foot battle spiders. They call themselves "Spider Riders."

In Shards of the Oracle, Hunter arrives in Arachnia just as a magical stone tablet known as the Oracle has been stolen and smashed into eight pieces, each hidden in a hostile location. Hunter wants to help, but first he must capture, train, and learn to trust the spider who will be his partner, a colossal Wanderer Spider, he names Shadow. Together, Hunter, Shadow, and the other Spider Riders battle to recover the Oracle and restore its power.

Shards of the Oracle (Spider Riders: Book One) is the basis for the first season of a 30-minute children's action adventure animé television series currently in production and scheduled to launch in 2005. Spider Riders is destined to become as popular for older kids as Yu-Gi-Oh! and its predecessors Pokémon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. 8-page color insert.

Fans of Drizzt Do'Urden will love this set, especially those of us who followed the series from the start and had to wait that agonizing year between releases. Relive the first meeting with Our Heroes in Icewind Dale and the battle of Cryshal-Tirith, the hunt for Mithrall, and the race to Calimport for Regis.

I have only one complaint with the series: Enough already, Bob! We KNOW the dwarves have an accent. Writing it out phonetically like that gets a bit annoying to read after awhile. Still...one grand ride, so don't miss this reprint.

                      Book Description

The Dysphagia Cookbook is a specialty cookbook filled with nutritious, great-tasting recipes for those whose eating options are limited by chewing and swallowing difficulties. All of the recipes focus on enhancing flavor, presentation, texture, aroma, and color, for there are many other products that supply nutritious calories or liquids but give little attention to these quality-of-life concerns.

Some of the unique aspects of The Dysphagia Cookbook make it particularly useful and practical. These include:

                      • A classification of S, G, or P indicates consistency levels of soft, ground, or puréed.

                      • Flexible instructions provide suggestions for adapting recipes to accommodate increasing levels of chewing and swallowing difficulties.

                      • There are many recipes with an international flavor that do not use difficult-to-find ingredients.

                      • Ready-made products that have been tested for thickness, flavor, ease of chewing, and ease of purchase and preparation are listed.

                      • A section on must-have kitchen supplies helps cooks deal with the new ways of preparing food for people with swallowing difficulties.

                      • The approach is practical rather than clinical.

The ritual of eating gives shape and meaning to our lives. Many meals are consumed in a pleasant atmosphere with the company of loved ones and friends in lively conversation. The Dysphagia Cookbook is an attempt to restore this joy and dignity to those whose pleasure in this area has been limited to one degree or another.

                      4 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-05-07

My mom has Multiple System Atrophy, which combines the worst of Parkinson's and ALS, among others. Not only can she not swallow well, she really cannot chew at this stage of her illness. This book recognizes both problems, unlike some other similar cookbooks I've tried. And I love the fact that healthy folks can enjoy the recipes as well. All in all, a big help when I was fast running out of tasty ideas.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful recipes for als patients and their families!.......2005-08-06

I really found this cookbook helpful since it was written by people who know first hand what ALS victims are experiencing. I was pleased with the types of food offered in this cookbook, it was nice simple ordinary style of meals just like we have always eaten. This is a helpful cookbook for the families of ALS patients. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars good food, good mood.......2004-11-08

This book enabled me to keep my sanity and enjoy family mealtime again! My son was recovering from jaw surgery. I was fixing a meal for the family and preparing something separate for my son. He grew weary of the blandness and monotony. I became tired and frustrated. The whole family was cranky. The solution was The Dysphagia Cookbook. The food was easy enough for my son to eat, palatable to the rest of the family, and I had only one meal to prepare! The recipes offer variety and flexibility. I found recipes for mature tastes as well as meals for a child's delight. I was pleasantly surprised to find a few new cocktails as well! Swallowing difficulties or not, anyone could use this cookbook.
