Customer Reviews:
Great Quick Read, Very Interesting.......2007-10-02
Just got into reading the "Prey Series". This book was a quick read and very well written. Looking forward to reading the rest.
One of the Best in the Series.......2007-06-24
MIND PREY is the seventh book in the "Lucas Davenport" series by John Sandford. It is also one of the best ones.
There isn't a dull moment in this book. The plot is a straightforward kidnapping story, but it still has a lot of exciting twists and turns. MIND PREY is also a whodunit, because the kidnapper is being assisted by someone whose identity isn't revealed until late in the story. There are also some interesting developments in Davenport's personal life in this novel also.
John Sandford is one of the biggest thriller writers out there, and this book demonstrates why he's so popular. MIND PREY is fast paced, fun, and exciting. It's a real pleasure to read. I rank this book up there with Sanford's best, which includes efforts such as RULES OF PREY, EYES OF PREY, and WINTER PREY. My advice is to read the series in order for maximum enjoyment, however.
Victims as victors..........2007-05-15
I'll second the other rave reviews of the seventh book in Sandford's Prey series! It IS the best so far (although I have a soft spot for Winter Prey where Lucas meets Weather). Sandford creates ironic suspense as Lucas encounters the game-playing villain but fails to recognize him. The kidnapped psychologist Andi Manette and her daughters Genevieve and Grace are as real as Lucas and John Mail - they're imaginative, resourceful and doggedly enduring in planning to get themselves out of this. No sitting and waiting to be rescued for them! One can't help but remember Kate's gutsy escape from Casanova's den in Patterson's Kiss the Girls, but Sandford's solution is realistic, grindingly slow, and you're not sure they will succeed - much better! Some consider these books too gory and graphic. Maybe so, but the gore is never gratuitous, and there are real heroes/heroines as well as more ordinary pitiable villains.
Mind your keyboard and it's a great read too.......2007-04-25
It's not necessary to read John Sandford's "Prey" series in order, but the books are so damn good and so well written it seems a pity NOT to give the author his due and admire the development of his many characters. The foremost of course is Deputy Chief Lucas Davenport, Porsche driving, game writing homicide detective. In Mind Prey, number 7 in the series, Davenport is up against a deeply twisted adversary: born a psychopath and created a sociopath, as Sandford points out. John Mail is also a fan of Davenport's games and after kidnapping a psychiatrist who used to treat him, along with her 2 children, he taunts Davenport with clues. The clues precipitate the involvement of one of Sandford's finer creations, Davenport's childhood friend Elle Kruger, a Catholic nun. Its good to see Elle again as she was only mentioned in the previous book. It was also refreshing to find Weather Karkinnen still alive and kicking and in Lucas's sights as wife material throughout this book.
"Mind Prey" is what i have come to expect from Sandford and the reason he is on my permanent order list. It is fast paced, well-plotted and quirky. All the Prey books to date have been definite 'unputdownable pageturners'. One of Sandford's quirks I particularly admire is his fascination, as given expression through Davenport, for technology. Lucas Davenport has made millions developing first role-playing games, then police simulations on computer, and now also has a company producing computer games. We also have a character called "Del Capslock", who was admittedly undercover for a long time. Cute hey! "Mind Prey" comes as highly recommended as all of Sandford's Prey series to date. I'm really enjoying slowly working through the series and the years. Definitely 5 stars all the way for the series so far.
Never a dull moment.......2006-06-13
This installment of the Lucas Davenport series is top-notch. The main character, Lucas Davenport, a Minneapolis detective is in search of a madman who kidnaps a psychiatrist and her two children. As always, Sandford writes a tight, engrossing tale, with witty dialogue and believable characters.
Davenport himself is the antithesis of your usual hero: hard-nosed, street smart (but not amazingly smart), and somewhat of a boor, but does have his sensitive side. In other words, he is not perfect and seemingly isn't a person you can idolize, but certainly can identify with.
Most thrillers don't even deserve to be called thrillers, but this one is a rollicking ride and the scenes leading to the climax really builds the suspense.
The villain is realistic. And, as with most of the Prey series books, he is introduced right off the bat. The suspense is in how Davenport and his team find out who he is.
Mind Prey is one of the more exciting Prey novels I've read. It's not laborious at all and absolutely worth your while.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Gail Simone's work with Birds of Prey is of an high order. This trade is a compilation of four issues dealing with the kidnapping of the Black Canary by the cult leader known as Savant, after a mission gone wrong.
The other Birds, with a bit of help, must work out how to get to her, and get her out.
Good Stuff.......2006-11-04
The star of the show is certainly Gail Simones writing, there is nobody working in US comics today who writes better female characters and more enjoyable dialog in general. The artwork is very capable and slick, though tending towards the cheesecake poses rather too often.
If you like well made US superhero comics then you will like this.
I own the single issues of this collection.......2006-06-14
This should collect issues 56 through 59 of Birds of Prey, and that being the case, this doesn't cover the story where Huntress investigates the religious cult and meets Vixen (that would be Between Dark & Dawn). Instead, it deals with blackmail and intrigue.
These are the first issues of BOP in which Gail Simone has taking over writing duties and served as a jumping-on point for many readers, including me. The book has never been this good. Whereas the series meandered before, it has now become an ongoing story. There is action, humor, great characters, and usually great art (there have been a few filler artists during Gail's run which is still ongoing in issues numbered in the 90s). Gail has also taken steps to add Huntress to the regular cast. She is a favorite of mine, and I'm glad she's here.
This is the first two graphic novels to feature art primarily by Ed Benes. Few people draw the female form as well as Benes. You'll either love him or hate him, depending on your feelings for "good girl" art.
A decent story with decent art - three and a half *.......2005-11-20
This title , along with Teen Titans, has got me interested in DC comics. There are better old and new DCs like Superman: Man of Steel one and two , but this is Gail Simone's work you NEED to have to read Sensei and Student.
Gail Simone should be cloned so that her brilliance lives on!.......2005-11-16
Birds of Prey are a team of women who prove that they are just as good, if not better, than the male superheroes of the DC universe.
Gail Simone, the genius writer of BoP, writes these three woman (Oracle, Huntress and Black Canary) as not just a team of superheroes but as real women. While these women can kick all kinds of supervillian ass, they also come across as real women because they joke, laugh, talk about guys, fall in and out of love and discuss their feelings. It's a refreshing change from the majority of women superheroes who are drawn with large breasts and very little emotion. The story arc in this TPB is also very gripping as Black Canary is captured by an insane information broker (and blackmailer) named Savant while Oracle and Huntress do whatever they can possibly do to rescue her.
If you're looking for a fun and entertaining read, Birds of Prey: Of Like Minds is the book for you.
Book Description
In Lucas Davenport, John Sandford "has created one of the most engaging (and iconoclastic) characters in contemporary fiction," writes The Detroit News. The first-rate thrillers in this collection of Prey novels offer the kind of brilliantly plotted, vastly entertaining stories that have become Sandford's stock in trade. All propelled by Lucas Davenport, with his "icy killer instincts" (Orlando Sentinel

Paradise for seekers of riveting reads.......2004-05-07
This has got to be the best value combination for a good, long but intense read - certainly I enjoyed all three stories no end and would recommend to anyone in need of some gentle, and not so gentle, reading relaxation.
The stories are engrossing, the charactors unique and the pages just turn themselves!! Go for it!
John Sandford Prey Books.......2002-08-19
I love all the John Sanford Prey Books. They keep you reading and on the edge of your seat, Lucas Davenport is someone I would want on my side.
I'm collecting all the hard backs, and love to get the three in one books.
How can you go wrong?.......2002-01-02
Excellent purchase, spent days reading about Davenport and crew. You can't co wrong purchasing this collection, genually entertaining and well worth the price.
Great books at a great price.......2001-10-16
Major John Sanford fan - so far in the "Prey" series, I would have to say that "Mind Prey" was by far the most suspenseful and enjoyable of the books. John Sanford keeps the pace going throughout the entire book (3-in-1 here). Wish there were more books printed with more than 1 story in it. Excellent bargain.

The history after Fatal Attractions.......2007-01-30
This book has an interesting crossover Avengers/X-men(X-factor and X-Force), it also contains what happens after Xavier hits Magneto's mind, the plot it is very interesting but a little long, the art it is really good.
Good premise, poor execution.......2005-11-23
Synopsis: Genosha is in a state of chaos. The former slave class of mutates riots on the verge of full scale civil war following post-X-Tinction Agenda Genoshan government's apathy towards the onslaught of the legacy virus that threatens to wipe them (the mutates) out. In the midst of this madness, Magneto's captains, Fabian Cortez (fallen from grace after his failed assassination attempt of Magneto) and Exodus, seek to bring the situation to critical mass.
As expected, the X-Men will enter the conflict, as it was their efforts that brought down the Genoshan government that enslaved and mutilated the mutate-caste (see the X-Tinction Agenda). As for the involvement of the Avengers, their motivation hits closer to home as Cortez has kidnapped Luna, daughter of the Inhuman Crystal and Quicksilver, thus making her the granddaughter of Magneto (note: Crystal was an Avenger at the time). The X-Men and Avengers struggle to save Luna and Genosha from the forces of Magneto's ambitious underlings, and find themselves caught in the middle of a brutal and ugly battle in a nation already mired in bloodshed.
Final Analysis: Although the story has a good premise and is somewhat relevant to the ongoing world of the X-Men due to it being a pseudo sequel to the X-Tinction Agenda and another dark chapter in the Genoshan saga, the practical elements of the undertaking are severely lacking. Also, as other reviewers have stated, the artwork in the Avengers chapters is poor to the point where the story itself, already as chaotic as Genosha itself, is painfully difficult to follow as a result. Also, the Avengers' presence is fairly gratuitous and unnecessary.
I have sympathy for the writers and the artists however, because it seems that the failings of the story were not their fault in the least. It seems as though it was the fault of their being forced to throw together an Avengers/X-Men crossover that deviated from the current plots in their respective titles and was simply uninspired. There is little reason I can give for why this should be purchased, or explain why it was even collected into graphic novel format. I am convinced that the cabal in charge of marketing at Marvel does not read their product, and are not nor have they ever been fans of the genre.
Exhibit A: Avengers/X-Men Bloodlines the graphic novel...
Avengers + X-Men=Average Story.......2004-01-03
This trade paperback takes place recently after the events in FATAL ATTRACTIONS. Magneto is braindead and The X-Men and the Avengers rush to Genoshia where other mutants take the "dream" of Magneto and twist and turn it into a terrorist type plan.
The story is average and not a lot of the popular Avengers or X-Men are in attendance (Missing in action is Iron Man, Thor, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Colossus ).
The art is somewhat good. The best art coming from Mr. Kubert. If your bored or if this is on a 50% discount rack, is the only time its worth to pick up.
A gritty story, showing the realism of war........1998-09-07
An excellent story, showing a darker side to the marvel universe. The tragic story of war in the island nation of Genosha, the gritty realism of the story along with the excellent artwork, makes for a great read. I would strongly recommend this, for it is truly, one of the few classic storys produced by Marvel.
Whoever loves Exodus should read this........1998-08-24
In here Exodus is the trouble maker while Magneto is recovering from the loss of his mind, and colossus feeling kind of guildty for leaving the X-men, THis book is great, it has a lot of heroes in it and you can keep track of all the heroes. If you love The avengers, avengers WEst Coast, The X-Men, Exodus, or even Fabian Cortez, this is the book to read.
