Aleutian PI Kate Shugak is hiding out in Bering, Alaska. Scarred, scared, and pretending to be someone else, she's trying to find a reason to go on living after the murder of her lover and her own close call with death (Hunter's Moon). Her self-imposed exile is threatened when Chopper Jim Chopin, a state trooper from her home village in the Bush, arrives in Bering with a new identity of his own. Tagging along are a couple of (barely) undercover FBI agents who think that criminals aboard a Russian fishing vessel docked in Bering's harbor are attempting to smuggle stolen plutonium into the United States to sell to terrorists. But Kate suspects that the Russians are involved in a very different game: laundering money through a local bank. To prove it, she enlists the help of an old college friend who happens to be the bank's chief teller. But getting the evidence costs Alice Chevak dearly; once again, Kate fears, she's brought death to someone she loves.
In this ninth outing for her popular series heroine, Dana Stabenow adds depth, texture, and vulnerability to Kate's inner life; reveals new aspects of Jim Chopin's character; and introduces Alice's daughter Stephanie, with whom Kate forges a bond of love and obligation that promises the youngster an ongoing role in future Kate Shugak's adventures. An expertly paced and plotted thriller with moody, moving undertones, Midnight Come Again will please the author's many fans and likely win her new ones too. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Reeling from the shocking murder that shattered her world, private investigator Kate Shugak has vanished into the vast Alaskan wilderness just when Jim Chopin needs her most. The dauntless Alaska State Trooper is ensnared in an intricate case involving the Russian Mafia and a cache of stolen plutonium--a case that will launch him on a treacherous solo undercover FBI assignment in the far western reaches of Bering. Only when he arrives in the remote coastal settlement does an astonished Jim discover that he isn't the only one who's gone incognito....Seeking solace in a new name, a new appearance, and a new life, Kate puts in eighteen-hour days handling freight for an independent airline. Yet not even the backbreaking labor provides adequate diversion from her inconsolable grief-nor does Jim's unexpected appearance....at first. Kate and Jim soon find themselves drawn headlong into a case that is far more twisted, and dangerous, than either of them ever could have suspected as it soon becomes violently clear that the theft that launched their investigation is only the tip of the iceberg....AUTHORBIO: DANA STABENOW is the author of nine previous Kate Shugak mysteries as well as two featuring Alaska State Trooper Liam Campbell, in addition to three science fiction novels. A graduate of the University of Alaska with a BA in journalism and an MFA, she won the Edgar Award for her first novel, A Cold Day for Murder, and recently began writing a monthly column for Alaska Magazine. Stabenow was born and still lives in Anchorage, Alaska.

Customer Reviews:
A Winner!.......2007-01-05
Top-notch author and another winning story. Alaska is featured and described with accuracy and affection. Just one of the many stories in this land of mystery and challenges.
Poor writing, poor plot, thin characters.......2005-05-09
Jim Chopin, a ladies man with a new lady every night and no visible personality traits or depth of character that might compel women to sleep with him other than his height, hair, and blue eyes.
Kate Shugak, she's a Native, she's tough, she's got scars, emotional and physical. She seems completely disinterested in her friends, family, or extending professional courtesy to others in law enforcement, but that's only because she's deeply scarred.
This was my first (and last) Dana Stabenow novel. The plot about Russian mafioso was simplistic and mundane. The characters were one dimensional and unsympathetic. And, did you know that FBI agents and local police sometimes really don't get along very well? The bulk of the novel was devoted to setting up the characters of Chopin and Shugak, leaving little time to develop a compelling conclusion to the crime story, and yet never left me with the impression that I knew anything at all about the two main characters. If you like mysteries that are well written page turners, you're better off with early Sue Grafton, Elizabeth George, Martha Grimes, or S.J. Rozan.
Kate Fights Her Loneliest Battle.......2004-07-24
Far away from kith and kin, Kate Shugak is holed up in Bering with a false identity and a broken heart. No spoilers as to why: Midnight Come Again serves as a flawless continuation of the horrifying Singing of the Dead, and I have no wish to spoil the former in order to praise the latter.
Suffice to say that Kate has survived--but barely. She is sick at heart, sick in her soul, and so unlike herself that Chopper Jim, who is ostensibly on an undercover mission but really searching for his old and dear friend, is horrified when he finally meets up with her again.
It is Jim's undercover mission, however clandestine he tries to keep it, that sparks the first modicum of interest in Kate since the unspeakable events the year before. As she and her trusty sidekick Mutt (who thankfully has survived as well) get embroiled in the doings of Russian Mafia members who may be hiding a stolen cache of plutonium, she seems to come back to life, slowly but surely.
Along the way are a pair of bumbling FBI agents who are sure that Kate is among the bad guys; and from afar, the call of Kate's nearest and dearest, all of whom pull her back to the world of the living.
A superb entry in the series!
Excellent Read.......2003-07-17
This was the first book I've read by Dana Stabenow but it won't be the last! I was captivated from beginning to end. I will definetly be reading the rest of the Kate Shugak series and anything else by Dana Stabenow I can get my hands on.
Midnight Come Again.......2001-08-23
Terribly disappointing that she has left the area of Alaska that readers have come to enjoy reading about. I feel that I not only lost a character I had become fond of as well as a relationship that was interesting, but the entire region as well! And the mafia is a predictable, much less interesting twist than the local people/characters that I had come to look forward to reading about. Kate is just not as appealing anymore. I just can't get interested in reading more Stabenow books, unfortunately..

Book Description
Tarzan cared little for the fate of adventurer Brian Gregory, drawn to the legendary city of Ashair by the rumor of the Father of Diamonds, the world's hugest gem. But to the ape-man the tie of friendship was unbreakable, and Paul d'Arnot's pleas moved him to agree to guide the expedition Gregory's father and sister organized for his rescue. The enigmatic Atan Thome was also obsessed with the Father of Diamonds, and planted agents in the Gregory safari to spy out its route and sabotage its efforts. Both parties reached their goal, remote Ashair . . . as prisoners of its priests, doomed to die in loathsome rites.
Customer Reviews:
Not much new here...........1999-12-01
Tarzan and the Forbidden City has all the usual elements of the formula: cruel villians, some comedy, lovely heroines, and threatening wild beasts. The first half of the book was better than average pulp adventure. Here, the pace moved quickly; the story's main conflicts emerged in the midst of Burrough's evocative depictions of the threatening and unknown regions of the African jungle. However, towards the end, the tension bogs down into a series of relentless and wild action sequences where cliffhanger follows upon cliffhanger, stretching the bounds of plausibility, even for a Tarzan story.

Customer Reviews:
" I don't need a son , I'm immortal , I'm my own legacy ".......2005-08-23
This is an Elseworlds story that mixes Superman with Jack Kirby's New Gods. I'm a fan of the New Gods and of seeing Superman outside of his normal books. I found this to be an interesting read and would recommend it if you like any of the characters like I do.
We get a good look at Darkseid in this book and due to the fact that its elseworlds , it gives them the freedom to take liberties on character's health and lives.
If you can pick it up for $10 or so it's worth it.
Excellent!.......2004-06-26
I borrowed a copy of this book from the public library. It's so good that I will be buying my own copy. It's very well written and the artwork is great, too. My first exposure to Darkseid was when I watched the tv cartoon "Superman: The Animated Series". I didn't care too much for the story arc about Darkseid, but this book impressed me enough to want to buy my own copy.
Not for the casual supes fan.......2003-08-25
The Elseworlds titles place defined & familiar characters in new situations and/or timelines. They are usually strong enough to standalone. Being passingly familiar with the main character typically helps, as you can then more readily follow the reimaginings and nods to events in the main continuity. This title is a good entry in the series, the premise is interesting and points to an innate 'good' in the central character no matter where he might grow up. However, lacking a good understanding of the 'New Gods', Darkseid et al, will impact the average reader simply looking for a 'different' Superman tale. They'll still find it a good read, with some pretty good art, but not exceptional. The "Red Son" variant, with Superman growing up in the Soviet Union, might be a more readily grasped book for casual collectors when it becomes available in a trade.
A Different kind of Superman stroy.......2002-02-07
The Man of Steel is totally redefined in this tough, gritty elseworlds story. It's a totally new kind a superman story, one that is violent, bloody, and surprisingly dark. Only for those who like elseworlds.
A different view on a well known character.......2001-05-13
In the last decade Superman has been through a lot and I was glad I was there for the ride..This isnt a typical Superman story but a Elseworlds story which for those who do know is take a character and put them in a diffrent timeline or alternate reality etc.. As a whole this book is a good read for any Superman fan who fancys something differnt..Definetly one of the better Elseword world books after Kingdom Come and The Kingdom. The plot is simple what if story but if you've never read Superman you really wont have a clue as to who is who in the book..All in all a fantastic read for those who read Superman a lot

Steven Raichlen brings the best of his culinary world to Healthy Latin Cooking: he absolutely loves Latin flavors, from Mexico to Argentina, from Cuba to Puerto Rico, and he is dedicated to a healthy diet that's low in fat yet high in flavor. (His High-Flavor, Low-Fat Cooking series is a must, as is his Miami Spice.)
Raichlen doesn't just drop the unwary cook into chapters of recipes that have been altered to reduce fat and salt and all the other nastiness. He begins with all the reasons for doing just that, and the many ways in which the true Latin diet is perfectly suited to a healthy pyramid approach. Nor does he shy away from truth, beauty, and justice, stating categorically that there are some dishes where lard just can't be left out of the flavor profile. He goes on, however, to show the reader how to cut way back on the total amount of lard used while retaining its great flavor.
Chapters are divided by kinds of food--appetizers, soups, salads, beans, and rice--not by place of origin. So it's kind of a Latin adventure to flip through this book, never knowing where you are going to land. There are Little Pots of Red Beans with Sour Cream from Nicaragua (140 calories per serving), Chicken and Vegetable Stew from Colombia (374 calories), Tamales from Mexico and from Cuba (163 versus 120 calories), Seafood Stew from Brazil (345 calories), Stuffed Pot Roast from Puerto Rico (533 calories), and flan from everywhere (423 calories). Steven Raichlen gives the reader a great way to spice up a diet, and a great diet to help life last a long, pleasurable time. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description

Steven Raichlen's Healthy Latin Cooking.......2007-03-15
Dissappointing for content; had especially wanted receipe for Feijoada and was referenced, but not provided in cookbook.
Delicious.......2007-01-03
This book is packed with a wide variety of recipes each tastier than the last. They're not all that difficult to pull off either. The book really captures that spiced flavor that I love, and now i dont have to go out to a restaurant to get it. If you're looking for a great recipe book, this will do, but if you want something with pizazz, then this is the choice for you.
Healthy Latin Cooking.......2006-02-25
This book gives recipies from different countries using ingrediants that are healthier for cooking meals. The recipies that I have tried are a great success and I enjoy trying different things from different countries.
not to interesting.......2002-12-06
I didnt really like the book. Some of the reciepes had extra and unnessary ingrediants. Not many pictures. I would look to have seen more pics and easier instructions.
Suculento y delicioso.......2000-10-19
This book has traditional recipes from every country in Latin America. Each recipe explains the techniques used to reduce the fat and calories while retaining the flavor and texture. Nutritional data is provided for each recipe. To make crisp empanadas without deep-fat frying, he "bake-fries" the meat pies in the oven with only a small amount of oil. His healthy guacamole replaces some of the high-fat avocado with tomatillos. To make a healthier flan, he uses lower-fat dairy products. There are incredibly satisfying recipes like Mexican Hot Chocolate, Huevos Rancheros, Roast Pork, Beef Fajitas, Roasted Spiced Chicken, and Nicaraguan Tres Leches Cake. This is a great book to combine the fantastic flavors of traditional Latin food with contemporary methods for healthy, convenient cooking.

Customer Reviews:
delicious indian food made simple!.......2007-08-16
Being a big fan of indian food since I had my first bite of garlic naan & samosas, making my own indian food has always been a desire of mine. The canned indian food might have cut it at first but I always wanted to do it better, authentically. However a good friend of mine always complained that when she made indian food it was a disaster, not only a good cook and her boyfriend being indian I found this rather discouraging! However, with Alemelu's guidance and easy instructions cooking so far has been a breeze! The first entree I tackled, the black eyed pea sambar turned out not only deliciously, but easy as pie! Wait, should I say easier then pie? It literally took 10 minutes to make, and had everyone I served it to 'ooohing' and 'ahhing'. I give this book 5 stars only because I can't give it a million, this might just be my favorite book and Alamelu, my favorite teacher!
Incredible flavors!.......2007-04-13
We first heard about this cookbook taking an Indian cooking class with Alamelu in 2006. Her class was fantastic and the food we made was delicious. We purchased this cookbook from her during the class and have made a lot of the recipes from it. Every recipe we made was amazing and the flavors and aromas were incredible. The recipes are very easy to follow and most of the spices we purchase are from a local Indian food store.
We used to frequently dine at local Indian restaurants in the Milwaukee and Chicago areas but haven't had the need to as often since we are cooking Indian dishes at home. We recommend the cookbook and taking her classes if you are in the Milwaukee area or plan on visiting...wonderful!
Wonderfully authentic taste!!!.......2007-03-18
I knew two wonderful women from India and the recipes that Alamelu presents in her book are wonderful adaptations of the true Indian treasures. While some of the recipes may seem high in fat, let us not forget that these are GOOD fats! Plus, being a Weight Watchers member I find that the high fiber from the lentils helps defray some of the fat content. It's all good for you...including fat - our brains need it!
My children love the flavors, as well. I took her cooking class at WCTC and when I brought home the left-overs, my boys (6 yrs and 3 yrs) fought over the black pepper rice. I didn't even get any of it (thank goodness I got to eat some in class).
Alamelu is a class act...her love for presenting us with wonderful food with incredible health benefits inspires you to want to cook this food all the time. The aroma of the Indian spices brings fond memories of my Indian friends who used to share their incredible food with me. I really think this book is a must-have. I have quite a few other Indian cookbooks that do not even compare to hers. I think her cookbook actually delivers authenticity and flavor where the others simply do not measure up.
Healthy South Indian Cooking.......2006-12-13
This book is excellent. Every recipe I have tried is very good and very easy. My kids really enjoy the meals I have made from the book. I highly recommend this book for quality and ease.
Delicious food; dubiously healthy.......2006-11-15
I can't really add much more to the positive reviews here, other than to echo them: The recipes in this book are all really wonderful (at least those I've tried). I find it odd that she doesn't include recipes for her own spice blends, but that's not a huge importance to me. Lots of hurried home Indian cooks use prepared spices, too.
The only real beef I have with the book is the idea that the recipes are in some way healthier than the average southern Indian cookbook's. Indian cooking has more vegetables, legumes and other plant foods than many other cuisines, but even southern cooking has tremendous amounts of fat. This book's recipes are no different.
Unfortunately, authentic Indian cooking is somewhat akin to the traditional recipes of the American south. You CAN make healthier versions of breaded chicken, sweet potato casserole and pork chops ... but they won't be the classics that people grew up with.
I really wish someone would write a good, comprehensive Indian cookbook devoted to decreasing the fat. With all the stews, soups and yogurt-based dishes in the cuisine, there seems ample opportunity for someone to take on the task of adapting some of the classics.
