When the beautiful young receptionist found drowned in the garden pool is identified as a local girl from nearby Farberville, it's clear the case may not only involve the suspicious characters who've recently moved to town, but also some of the citizens of Maggody, who may have a secret or two to hide themselves. There's the doctor who can't resist a dose of his own medicine and a roster of patients that reads like a who's who of tabloid headlines, as well as the local pastor who gets his spiritual inspiration with a little help from the sacramental wine, and the mayor's wife who makes it her business to know everything about everyone. Soon Arly finds herself on the trail of a killer and discovers she may be the only innocent person left in town.

I love Maggody.......2007-05-13
Interesting new twists for our heroine in this one. A must read for fans of Maggody. All the usual from that most amusing place.
Funny and Entertaining.......2007-03-23
I had quite a few laughs with this one.The people who are forced to be together at the rehab center start acting up and it is hilarious. When it comes to showing the childish behavior of spoiled celebrities,Joan really nailed it here. The best dialogue in the book occurs when the 'inmates' start griping.Get your hands on the book.If your down and need a few laughs, this will get it done for you.
Evolving?.......2006-12-26
This read like a transition to a more serious Arly, which I very much hope doesn't actually happen. I found it disappointing that, like every other fictional female sleuth, she suddenly needs a man to solve her problems; the strong and caustic loner is going all domestic. If it's true to the trite formula that applies to Hess's other series, Jack will start complaining about Arly sticking her pretty inept nose where it doesn't belong in the next installment, especially given the ending (which just make me groan -- and why the heck do Ruby and Estelle KNOW this in the first place? That's just gross). And all the discussion about her New York Socialite past was scary -- does the character really need to go there? I could see this going in an interesting direction if Jack is suddenly out of the picture and Arly is allowed to return to character, given the not-too-surprising ending, but otherwise this might be the death of the series.
Fair.......2006-09-09
I was so glad to see another Maggody book! And, I liked it - but...think it dragged in parts - I almost felt as if this was the "wrap it all up" book - because it seemed every single citizen of Maggody had to be mentioned - no matter how obsurely. I liked the book - just not as much as I've liked the others. The humor was not as sharp.
Surprising.......2006-07-18
I have found the Maggody series to be boring and irritating for the last several novels. This new one actually surprised me with several departures from the formulaic. There were actually a few likeable/sympathetic characters for a change. And a little witty dialogue!
Maybe if we continue to see a few more of these positive changes, there is hope for this series.

Fly's High & Swings Low.......2005-11-01
This Trade Paper Back is worth picking up because it really is a great concept, and their are some really interesting parts to it. The book collects a 10-Issue maxi-series that reflects on the history between Batman and Superman. Each issue represents a year, and I have to tell you there are some really great years collected in this book.
With that said, being that this should be the best of the best, the finest of the Worlds Finest, the book doesn't quite live up to its potential. I agree with some of the other reviewers. The story where Batman is still distraught over Jason Todd's (Robin's) death is amazing. It's worth buying just for that. It gives you great insight on both Batman and Superman. However, there are other stories I think we could have done without, and chosen some better story lines.
Also, the ending really took away from the book for me. Just a little too nice and neat for my tastes. The book started off great, and had some great parts along the way. Overall, I'll say the book is worth picking up. It's made for Trade Paper Back though. It makes it so much more affordable than buying 10 individual comics.
I am a huge Batman and Superman fan.......2004-02-19
Even though I also like superhero characters by Marvel, I must admit that Batman and Superman always spring to my mind as my two favorites. Of course, the fact that I'm in my forties might have something to do with it. Still, I would recommend this and any other graphic novel with these two ultimate DC superheroes to any and all. If for no other reason, because no collection is complete without them.
Not the best World's Finest book I've ever read........2004-01-29
First let me say that this is not a standalone book. If you don't know the history of Batman and Superman there will be places where you'll stop and go "huh?" I felt Mr. Kessel could have done a much better job referencing this history rather than just expecting the reader to know it. That said, I thought the book started off very well. The first four years (the book covers a ten year period) was well written and very enjoyable. The fifth year, which dealt with Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite, was fun. Unfortunatly, the book goes down hill from there. I found the ending to be silly and completely unsatisfying. Which pretty well sums up the last half of the book.
It has its highs and lows........2004-01-09
First off, the reason I got this book is because of the new Superman/Batman monthly series. I really enjoyed the issues and decided to get the World's Finest to see more Batman/Superman team-ups.
World's Finest chronicles the first ten-years of Batman and Superman's relationship. It starts off w/ Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent attending a charity function of a mutual friend who is kidnapped and held hostage. The two heroes arrive at the scene but due to their inability to work together, they are unable to save his life. From that point on, they decide to remmeber that day by meeting every year and working to improve their group dynamics. In my opinion, not the strongest reason for teaming up....but I'll buy it. End of year one.
The next stories, follow the contrasting nature of Batman and Superman. For example, Superman works hard to smile for the public and earn the people's trust whereas Batman is content sticking to the shadows and letting people think he is an urban legend. He even explains the madness in his methods. The personal nature of the conversations between the two characters is the book's high point. Another high point of the book is the way that Karl Kesel ties in the different events into a common timeline for the two heroes.
The low point of the book is in its art, in some areas it gets rather sloppy (esp. at the end). Another low point is the rather cliched dialogues that the chracters spout when fighting villains. It takes away from the seriousness of the story and makes it seem dated. But since the book had more high points than low points, I have given it four stars. For me personally, I enjoyed the story where Superman takes Batman into Smallville after Jason's (Robin II) death. And also, where Superman returns from death to confront a new man under the mask.

Fun.......2001-08-23
Worthwhile use of the "World's Finest" title for this first animated meeting between the Bat and the Big Blue Cheese. (For many years, "World's FInest"'s lead story every month was a Batman/Superman team-up, in an era when hero's team-ups were not common)
Excellent adaptation of the original; however, not a slavish one -- plays the rivalry between Batman/Bruce and Superman/Clark for Lois Lane's affections a little more broadly (the visual differences between the animated and the comic versions of the scene in which Clark calls at Lois's apartment and Bruce is already there are Significant).
Harley Quinn's running feud with Luthor's bodyguard/chauffeur, Mercy, is one of the high points.
While it doesn't bring much new, it's a good counterpoint to the film it adapts in giving alternate, slightly more "adult" views on some things -- if you have one, you really need the other.

Exquisite Steve Rude Art Can't Help Dull Scripting.......2005-07-22
Steve Rude had done a lot of admirable work in the comic's world. Fans of Nexus have certainly come to appreciate his retro-pulp style. His renderings of the two most recognizable franchise characters in western culture can leave no doubt to the man's vituousity. Each panel is lively and fluid, so much like his idols Toth and Kirby. Steve Ollif's earthy colorings are a perfect counterpoint to Rude's lines.
The problem here is with the confused, muddled, and talky plot wrought by Dave Gibbons. I have always preferred Gibbons, the penciler (Watchmen, the old Rouge Trooper series) to Gibbons the writer simply on a sense that the man seems temperamentally better suited to narrating through image than through dialog. "Batman Vs. Predator", an early attempt at scripting, suffers from a lack of the sort of action experience that should have been a slam dunk for the venture. Similarly, "World's Finest" troubles itself over a plot that requires too much explication, a classic, "show-don't-tell" mistake. Something about orphans. Something about an old Fagin-like character using children to commit crimes. But he's dead... but he's not dead. Someone's dead, or maybe not. And Lex Luthor wants to buy up property in Gotham and Joker wants to wet his beak in Metropolis. For some reason, this totally triggers paroxysms of self-doubt in the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight because they feel that they need to "trade" territories in order to deal with their mutual enemies. Why they do this anyone's guess. Ostensibly, Superman is too humiliated by his run-in with the Joker in Metropolis to show his face and Luthor's dismantling of a bomb that Bats was attempting to stop generates similar feelings in him. This, despite the fact that both characters have sizable rouge's galleries of their own. (One would think that it would be more difficult to learn an entire city layout than the crime-styles of a given villain...). But these quibbles would remain quibbles if the conflicts were interesting. But the sad fact is that there is very little head-to-head between the two teams of heroes and villains. In fact, Joker and Luthor meet each other more often than they meet their arches. But even that fact would be forgivable if the meetings between Jokers and Luthor rose above the simplistic "Odd-Couple" scenario. There are undoubtedly real differences of style between the characters (at least as much as between Superman and Batman) so why not exploit those differences? Instead, we are given only caricatures of the villains - Joker is nuts, Luthor is a maniacal, no-nonsense businessman. In the years after Frank Miller and John Byrne readers have come to expect more sophistication when it comes to representations of these two extremely interesting figures (and one only needs to watch an episode of the excellent Justice League Unlimited or an old episode of Batman TAS to see what other writers can conceive of with these characters).
"World's Finest" is simply a missed opportunity.
Definitely World's Finest.......2005-05-03
This story is great at portraying Superman and Batman, and how they work together even with their differences. In this adventure, they battle the team of Luthor and the Joker. Full of some great action, it's well worth a read. It should also be noted that this was the first time I'd ever seen the "split screen" showing Batman and Superman's origins side by, showing the similarity in their histories.
If you enjoyed the recent Batman/Superman stories, you'll enjoy this.
World's Finest?.......2003-05-17
On the whole, I would say this is a book that fails to live up to its potential.
For someone new to DC comics it is a decent introduction to the main characters associated with Superman and Batman, and in parts succeeds in capturing the simplistic attitude that saturated the fifties team-up comics to which the book pays tribute. This is spliced together with a more modern, and strangely less captivating story telling of the many shades of grey that exist between absolute good and evil.
Steve Rude and Karl Kessel's artwork more than lived up to my expectations but, in my copy at least, is seriously let down by some sloppy colour printing. If you can get past the annoying overspill of the colours into black areas then you'll be getting your money's worth.
But it isn't a 'World's Finest'. The superheroes come across as ineffectual in the face of real world injustice, which in turn leads to a somewhat unsatisfied feel to the ending. The book certainly has some good moments, particularly the interactions of Luthor and the Joker, but it wont stay in your mind for long after you've finished it.

3 novels under 1 cover.......2003-02-03
This is in fact an omnibus of 3 novels, not a sequel to the earlier collaboration of Dickson and Bova (called "Gremlins Go Home")
Here's a brief summary of what we're treated to here:
"Gremlins Go Home", a novel by Dickson and Bova, which explores the concept that aliens have been living here for hundreds of years (under the appearance of leprechauns, elves, etc.) and that they want to go back to their home... now made possible because of a NASA mission that finally reaches beyond the moon; will they have to hijack the rocket?
"Hour Of The Horde", by Gordon Dickson (1970), is about an alien race that cruises galaxies to "deplete" all life, and their latest target is our solar system. An army of races from our system is put together to show resistance, including representation from Earth: an eclectic crew (to say the least!) from various planets is put together... will Earth prove that it is worthy?
"Wolflings", also by Gordon R. Dickson (1968), is about an intergalactic empire ruled by aliens MUCH superior to Earth, which they consider "little primitive beings". Earth sends one of its best to the aliens' "homeworld", with orders to "observe" the situation. But he cannot simply see what he sees and do nothing...
The 3 novels are COMPLETELY UNRELATED (other than the fact that Dickson wrote/co-wrote them), but are quite entertaining each in their own way. Some themes will now appear "deja vu", but considering they were written decades ago, years before TV shows started to put together interplanetary crews "à la Star Trek", those books are quite interesting.
And because all 3 novels are quite good but out-of-print, I suggest this reasonably priced purchase, whether you're a Dickson fan or not. You'll get hours of entertaining sci-fi!
Book Description
More than a decade ago, Bob and Melinda Blanchard decided to follow their dreams, taking a risk that many of us would not chance: They uprooted themselves from the cold winters of Vermont, moved to the Caribbean island of Anguilla, opened a seaside restaurant, and settled into the beautiful rhythms of a new life on island time. The Blanchards chronicled this inspiring transformation in their book A Trip to the Beach—the story of their journey to living the life they love. Here, in Cook What You Love, Bob and Melinda extend that journey into the pleasures of the kitchen, teaching us that even if we can’t move to paradise, we can create our own little paradise wherever we are, at any time of year.
In Cook What You Love, Bob and Melinda bring food and people together in the kitchen and around the table. With simple ingredients, no-fuss instructions, and flavorful meals that can be prepared in a snap, this book celebrates the Blanchards’ knack for combining the sublime comforts of great food and great company with glimpses into their paradise.
Cook What You Love blends many of the Blanchards’ favorite recipes with anecdotes about how their love for food seeps into every part of life. Bob and Melinda’s transporting stories take you from making tortillas and salsa in the mountains of Mexico to discovering the combination of lime, coconut, and ginger in Thailand and grilling chicken and ribs at an Anguillan bike race. From Blue Cheese and Mango Bundles, Reggae Pork, and Pistachio-Crusted Goat Cheese Salad to Crunchy Coconut French Toast, Pumpkin Whoopie Pies, and Key Lime Pound Cake, every recipe merges the timeless flavors of the Blanchards’ classic New England roots with the rich influences of the Caribbean.
The delicious recipes are accompanied by expert cooking tips and, to make it easy, include prep and cooking times. Cook What You Love joins some of the Blanchards’ most celebrated restaurant recipes with their personal home-cooked favorites, creating an incredible breadth of both everyday and special-occasion dishes—all enlivened with their infectious enthusiasm for exploring new tastes, places, and friendships around the common bond of food.

Easy, Amazing recipes.......2007-04-03
We were told before our recent trip to Anguilla, Blanchard's is simply the best! Not only did we fall in love with the island but with Blanchard's and their newly opened restaurant, Zurra. The food was amazing and each night Bob Blanchard personally greets all the guests. We purchased both this cookbook and another and yes, we have brought it all home. The recipes are easy to follow, quick and are simply delicious. You can not go wrong!
Exactly as advertised: your go-to cookbook.......2007-03-27
It's easy to love --- or envy --- Melinda and Bob Blanchard.
They have a charmed life: a restaurant on a Caribbean island so popular that people fly to Anguilla just to have dinner there, a lovely house in Vermont for summer retreats, lifestyle books that sell and sell.
But in the end, the early motto of Motown applies: "It's what's in the grooves that counts."
That is: These "simple, flavorful recipes to make again and again" --- well, do you?
We bought "Cook What You Love" because "At Blanchard's Table: A Trip to the Beach Cookbook" was very much a cookbook we turned to again and again. And not for the entertaining stories about Blanchard's Restaurant, the Blanchards' enlightened management theories and their annoyingly happy marriage --- those passages made for pleasant reading, but only once. The reason to own a cookbook is the food. And here the Blanchards shine.
Melinda Blanchard does not begin in the kindergarten --- she assumes you know your way around a kitchen and can crank out a dozen meals good enough to serve to friends. She assumes you have sharp knives and quality pans. She assumes you don't need to be told that fresh trumps frozen, that prepared foods are generally a disguised delivery system for chemicals, and warmth and friendship are essential ingredients in any dish.
As a result, Mrs. Blanchard produces stunningly straightforward recipes. You'll need fresh ingredients and a few spices. You won't need much time; nothing takes very long to make. And you won't need to stress, as dinners build around Blanchard recipes somehow seem.... relaxed.
Bonus points: great range and great editing. In about 175 pages, Melinda Blanchard not only covers hors d'oeuvres, salads, main dishes, vegetables and desserts, she presents a toothsome selection of breakfast specialties and eight recipes for kids.
I adore this book!.......2007-01-05
A friend gave me this book, and I absolutely love it. The recipes depart refreshingly from standard fare and yet remain very accessible, often by providing a twist on old favorites. Just as the title says, these are wonderful, simple recipes you'll want to make many times.
The style of the writing is warm and welcoming, a friendly reminder to slow down and savor the moment. And whose life wouldn't be improved by a little more savoring? :)
Yum Yum.......2006-11-03
This is probably the best cookbook that I have ever purchased. So far, I haven't found a recipe that wasn't great and easy to make. Unlike some complicated and unclear recipes found in cookbooks and internet sites, this book lays out clear unambigious tasks while identifying the times and ingredients to make it all happen. Recipes are simple to make and oh, so delicious! I would recommend this book to anyone from a beginner to a pro! Go ahead, buy the book for some Caribbean flavor!
