Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Martin Urban is a quiet bachelor with a comfortable life, free of worry and distractions. When he unexpectedly comes into a small fortune, he decides to use his newfound wealth to help out those in need. Finn also leads a quiet life, and comes into a little money of his own. Normally, their paths would never have crossed. But Martin’s ideas about who should benefit from his charitable impulses yield some unexpected results, and soon the good intentions of the one become fatally entangled with the mercenary nature of the other. In the Lake of Darkness, Ruth Rendell takes the old adage that no good deed goes unpunished to a startling, haunting conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars Short and Near Perfect.......2007-03-25

For those interested, this book is available as part of a two book package, ISBN # 0 09 187009 7, which combines the present novel with "The Veiled One" at a bargain price.

This is not a long novel, but it is compelling and hard to put down. There are no major flaws in the novel: it is well balanced, it has good characters, it has a a good plot, and it has mystery. It is what one expects from the author. She delivers a near perfect tale. The book came out in 1980.

There are no extraneous diversions or literary trips made. All the writing is directed around the plot of what happens to an accountant after he wins an English football pool, and a prize of over £100,000.

Highly recommend: 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Unputdownable.......2006-07-25

Like most books by Ruth Rendall, this is a masterly study of the minds deviating from what we would call the normal.

It keeps the reader excitedly hoping for a happy ending --that never comes. Or maybe it does, after all. This goes beyond a common crime novel. Absolutely recommendable.

5 out of 5 stars THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY..........2003-07-27

Ruth Rendell is a fabulous British author who has churned out mystery after mystery filled with dark, demented twists. This is another tautly plotted, well crafted mystery with characters that, though seemingly normal, are just a tad off the beaten path.

This book features Martin Urban, a staid and somewhat stuffy young man who would have felt at home in Victorian England. Martin wins a very large sum of money in a football pool with a little help from Tim Sage, an old friend of his. Altruistic and given to some rather god-like pronouncements, Martin wishes to give the money away to the deserving poor, in order to enable them to buy a home. Poor Martin, there are none so blind, as those who will not see.

Beset by subliminal homo-erotic thoughts regarding Tim Sage, he meets a mysterious young woman named Francesca, who is as demure and submissive as a Victorian maiden and captures his heart. Unfortunately, she is bound to another. All, however, is not as Martin thinks that it is.

Enter Finn, the twisted son of Lena, former cleaning lady to Martin's mother. When Finn's path crosses that of Martin's, during one of Martin's fumbling attempts to give some of his winnings away, a very clever dialogue ensues between these two with some unexpected, deadly results.

Fans of Ms. Rendell will not be disappointed by this book. It is filled with the slightly off-beat characters for which she is known, some of whom harbor dark twisted thoughts, while others are entirely socio-pathic. Well-written is spare, clear prose and filled with enough twists and turns to satisfy the most discerning of readers, this is another gem in Ms. Rendell's treasure trove of mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2002-11-16

I went to my library to check out "A Sight for Sore Eyes" as I was trying to describe it to a friend and wanted to re-read it for some details. Discovered "The Lake of Darkness" on the Ruth Rendell shelf.

What a great book! I could hardly put it down. I loved the ending where the bad guy forgets one very important detail and can't do anything about it. We assume that he will be caught, but don't know for sure.

What I like about this book was that the characters seem to be normal, but they are anything but. It makes one wonder what ones neighbors might really be doing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a great story.

5 out of 5 stars Rendell is amazing.......2002-10-03

The woman never ceases to amaze me. I have read so many Rendell/Vine books and just can't stop. So few authors can look into the warped, secret side of someone the world perceives as normal in the acutely fascinating way she does. No skipping words or pages in her books.
'Darkness' ranks as one of the most perfectly crafted mysteries ever written. When all the pieces fit so beautifully--without stretching and reaching, without the reader thinking he's on a fictional ride--so perfectly, it is physically satisfying. The reader feels like one of the gods on Olympus looking down on these characters who stumble inexorably into what is to be their fate.
At the end of this book, I sat back and sighed with satisfaction. Yes, brilliant, Ruth. How do you do it?

This amazing memoir tells the story of a privileged man's journey from boyhood to manhood. As the reader, I was able to travel to foreign countries, experience war, and the ups and downs of love. The most amazing part of the story is when Arthur meets Jane, his 4th wife and love of his life. Hadley's memoir provides hope and insight. I never realized the great role that chance plays in a person's life. Society tends to depict fortune and misfortune as uncontrollable events. Hadley's memoir emphasizes that taking risks allows a person to have a more fulfilling life. Heads or Tails encourages us to reevaluate our own lives in order to reach our potential. I also loved the photographs of the author and his family included in the middle of the book. I cried at the end of the memoir. Arthur Hadley's story is truly amazing!

                5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read.......2007-03-18

Arthur Hadley has lived long and large and this incredible memoir that intertwines his personal and professional endeavors with equal clarity and fascination is a great page-turner. It's rare to find a writer of such grace on topics both personal and political. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Moving and Inspirational.......2007-03-16

"Arthur Hadley is a marvel and this is an exceptional memoir of growing and surviving a seemingly elegant but frozen family" -David Halberstam I saw this quote and after reading this book, I wholeheartedly agree that this book is a "marvel" and "exceptional." I cried at the end (and I never cry). This book is one of those rare ones that truly move the soul. I am buying three extras to give as gifts!

                Book Description

This eerie and visually arresting tale is set in the grotesque city of Uroconium, where Ardwick Crome dreams of a strange ritual from his childhood. The women of his village pursue a "lamb"; to eat a pie made from its head is considered good luck. But in his dream, the living animal itself is offered to Ardwick Crome, and the gift's significance makes it too dangerous to accept...

In that city and at that age of the world, it would have been safer for Crome to seek the source of his dream within his heart. Instead he went out and searched for it in Uroconium.

2 out of 5 stars Haunting and Surreal.......2003-09-19

As in all the work of M John Harrison, there is more going on in THE LUCK IN THE HEAD than meets the eye. Part of his metafictional world of Viriconium (a city that changes its name as well as its character in connected stories in his VIRICONIUM fantasies), this tale is brilliantly and darkly brought to visual life by the incredible draughtsmanship of Ian Miller. It is the story of a failed assassination attempt on the life of Mammy Vooley, the bizarre goddess-ruler-thing of Uroconium (as the city is called this time). Too bizarre for some, this will be relished by lovers of Lautreamont, delvers in the arcane, and fans of Harrison's often-oblique but always haunting fictions.

5 out of 5 stars Luck in the Head.......2001-07-18

However successful this short story is in its text form, Luck in the Head becomes a visual masterpiece with some of Ian Miller's most outrageous illustrations and interpretations of the city's horror and vacancy as well as Chrome's loneliness and confusion. Ian Miller bombards his audience with crude depictions as well as intricate ones, all depending on the atmosphere he is trying to set. Very Successful Graphic Novel.

                3 out of 5 stars Ill-judged adaptation.......2000-01-20

This graphic novel is an adaptation of the immeasurably-more-subtle story of the same name to be found in Harrison's collection "Viriconium Nights". The artist has focussed on the violence of the story, leaving out the extraordinarily subtle relationship between character, philosophy and landscape which is Harrison's trademark. Forget this, and take the real trip: get "Viriconium Nights" and "In Viriconium" (called "The Floating Gods" in the US, but the British edition is better) instead.

I've had this book for many years and always go back to it. The recipes are very basic and like the ones my mom cooked but never documented. Who ever wrote down family recipes to pass on? How do you measure when the recipe is in the cook's head? This year I purchased a copy for each one my children to have. They are all grown and out of the house. This way they have a starting point and can embellish on the recipes. Unfortunately, it doesn't contain photos, but I know the dishes just by the topic, descriptive receipe name and the ingredients.

Have owned this book for about 20 years now, and have replaced my paperback with a hard covered book because I used it so much that my first book is now in two peices.

It is such a wonderful, uniquely written, simply to understand book that informs those who really want to understand cooking. I don't think it is written to impress professional chefs but to work with regular people who love to eat Chinese.

My best friend (who is Chinese) and I used to cook all the time, and I have lots of experience making Chinese food
and this book added to my knowledge and is still adding to my knowledge years later. The only Chinese cookbook I would own.

                        This is definitely worth owning!!!!
                        You will love this book!

I am 61 (2006). A male cosmopolitan who lived in Denmark, England, USA, Japan (11 years). I have travelled over and over all the world in my profession.
Cooking is my hobby. I wrote books on international cooking. Chinese is a speciality (won prices on my cooking).
This "1000 Recipe Chinese Cookbook" is a kind of "dictionary" more than a practical cookbook. Out of my collection of more than 60 Chinese Cookbooks, this is useless, unless you are an American with little knowledge to international cooking. And worse: MANY standard Chinese recipes are missing. To read at your disk, in the kitchen very unpractical. You will have to turn pages for ref. too many times.
No good book for the real "seeker" to good food cookbooks.
                        Per Gade.
                        professor of Music.
                        (Have written 61 books myself).

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly simple recipes, yet astonishingly delicious!.......2006-03-08

This is not a type of cookbook which you can just open, choose a recipe and start making it. If you tried that, you would probably feel confused and frustrated. This book reqires couple of hours of reading through and studying before actually using the recipes. However, once you understand its logic, it is wonderfuly simple to use. At first, many recipes look almost too simple; however, it surprised me that only couple of ingredients can produce quite complex, delicious, and satisfying tastes!

I have not cooked chinese food before and so I can't comment on how this books compares to other chinese cookbooks. However, since somebody mentioned that this book is not for beginners, I would like to say that I am not having any trouble with it and find it rather simple to follow. I would like to advise people who are new to cooking chinese cuisine, or just new to cooking, to relax and not worry about "right" and "exact" ingredients and special utensils - fear of all these unknowns kept me from trying to make different foods at home, but now after reading this book, I feel so much more confident in mixing different things, substituting, and using whatever I have...it doesn't have to be exact to the letter, and it still turns out fantastic. This book is really good about that: teaching you basics, giving you confidence, and guiding you in your development of knowledge and skill.
