If you remember with pleasure those dark and gloomy Martin Beck mysteries by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo, you'll be glad to plunge into the first of Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallender mysteries to appear in English. Wallender's personal life can occasionally seem more depressing than even a provincial Swedish detective should be asked to bear, but his investigative skills are strictly first rate. And Mankell's story of the brutal murder of an elderly farm couple uncovers an unusual aspect of life in modern Sweden--a streak of fear and prejudice against the many newcomers from Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe who have sought asylum there.
Book Description
First in the Kurt Wallander series.
It was a senselessly violent crime: on a cold night in a remote Swedish farmhouse an elderly farmer is bludgeoned to death, and his wife is left to die with a noose around her neck. And as if this didn’t present enough problems for the Ystad police Inspector Kurt Wallander, the dying woman’s last word is foreign, leaving the police the one tangible clue they have–and in the process, the match that could inflame Sweden’s already smoldering anti-immigrant sentiments.
Unlike the situation with his ex-wife, his estranged daughter, or the beautiful but married young prosecuter who has peaked his interest, in this case, Wallander finds a problem he can handle. He quickly becomes obsessed with solving the crime before the already tense situation explodes, but soon comes to realize that it will require all his reserves of energy and dedication to solve.

Its Hard To Put Down.......2007-06-29
It's hard to solve the mystery. But, it's even harder to put the book down...
Imagine waking up during the middle of the night. You're awakened by a bad dream that tells you something is terribly wrong, awfully strange. You check your house and everything appears to be normal. You notice something peculiar about your neighbor's house- the same neighbor who is your best friend you share tea with every day. Once you enter the house, you wish you never entered. That's exactly what happened to one elderly Swedish farmer in Henning Mankell's Faceless Killers.
He discovers the scene referred to as a "slaughterhouse." His best friend Johannes Lovgren is dead and Lovgren's wife Maria is left to die. She is found tied to a chair with a noose around her neck.
It's a double murder mystery that is impossible to solve. There is no evident motive. Both Maria and Johannes are said to have no enemies and not much money. But, the victim has been brutally tortured and killed, while he wife has been left to die. The crime seems way too personal and gruesome to have been a random robbery.
When Maria eventually dies in the hospital after being in a coma, she gives detectives one clue with her last dying breath. "Foreign." Mankell's Faceless Killers addresses political and national issues that extend far beyond a murder mystery of country couple. In a country full of foreigners, Maria's clue doesn't help much. Mankell takes a murder from the domestic space to a national "international" realm. In a country with increasing anti-immigrant sentiment and crimes by "foreigners," the Lovgren murders touch a sensitive issue that parallels political problems in Sweden.
The detective called to scene is Kurt Wallander, a man with just as many personal troubles to solve. Although Wallander is a miserable man with horrible relationships, he gains the reader's sympathy and oftentimes empathy. Faceless Killers is not just a detective fiction with a murder to solve. It is an interactive work. Wallander takes the reader inside the workings of his mind and into his world of crime-solving as he tries to balance bumpy relationships with his father, ex-wife, and daughter.
Reading Faceless Killers, the reader is more inclined to learn what happens to Wallander than the answer to the murder mystery. Mankell's Wallander comes to life. He undergoes not only relationship problems, but also the struggles of everyday men. Wallander's journey through aging and weight-gain is equality a roller coaster as solving the murder. Mankell takes the reader into the mind of a police detective. Through first person narrative and self-reflexivity, Wallander directly tells his readers how he is thinking. The minds and workings of a detective and a middle aged troubled man are puzzling as investigating the crime.
Going back to the action-packed murder plot, the investigation process takes a deep turn when Maria's brother comes forth with secret information no one knew. The truth of Johannes' double life comes forth. It is revealed that Johannes was not the faithful husband and modest neighbor everyone thought he was. His secret "other" life brings light to valuable clues that further Wallander's investigation of the murder.
Unlike Sherlock Holmes who is a know-it-all detective with surprising conclusions, Wallander lets the reader join in on the investigation process. The reader is included in details and each piece of the puzzle. The puzzle is the answer to who committed the horrendous crime and the answer to Wallander's quest for a better life.
Faceless Killers is a must read for those curious minds who want more than a simple murder mystery. Mankell provides a smooth effortless reading that provokes the intellect (solving the crime) and emotion (empathizing with Wallander).
4 1/2 stars........2007-04-17
after two years of compulsive reading, i seemed to have hit a wall. suddenly nearly everything (and all novels) were boring me. so i took a few weeks off. read a few short stories, a little journalism, a bit of poetry, nothing else. then i decided to give the novel a try again. i seldom read genre fiction because it so often has no depth, and i hadn't read a mystery in years, but at the local bookstore henning mankell's "faceless killers" had caught my eye. why? cool cover, of course. the vintage paperback with the farm house sitting out in the snowy field during what looks like the approach of night. well, i read it, of course, and my slump with the novel has been broken. before i even finished it, i ordered two more of this author's books, that's how impressed i was. this book may even become a gateway for me into the whole mystery genre. if there is more stuff out there like this, i want to find it. the protagonist, kurt wallander, is not some overblown, cliche toting police detective. he is pretty plain, pretty believable. and i think that's a big reason why this book worked so well for me. the characters have depth, and the story does, as well. swedish society, circa 1990, is also brought into vivid clarity for the reader. the pages raced by, and i actually found myself enjoying reading again. hooray! anyway, enough said. i have a life and you have a life and we need to get back to things. but this was a fantastic book. i recommend it highly.
The Best Wallander Novel: Short and Well Written With an Excellent Plot.......2007-02-12
This is not a classic novel, nor will Mankell win a Nobel prize for the effort but this is his best novel as a balanced and well written piece of literature. It is probably not quite as entertaining as One Step Behind, a later novel. It is short and well balanced with interesting characters. It is the first novel in the Wallander Swedish police detective series.
I thank fellow reviewer Leonard Fleisig for bringing this author to my attention. The writing is simply superb. So far, I have bought and read six novels in the Wallander series.
I thought that the novel was excellent. It has a less complicated plot than some of the subsequent novels and there is more emphasis on the characters. Some of the later novels in the Wallander series rely on a string of bloody and gruesome murders to keep the story going. They go on and on - right to the end - and that becomes a bit too much. For that reason I think that the present novel is his best. The Wallader novels remind me a bit of the Peter Robinson Inspector Banks series, but Mankell's style is a little more spirited and more interesting and does not mimic Peter Robinson's style.
The book opens with a map of southern Sweden showing the location of the town of Ystad. The latter is the primary setting, although the crimes are spread around the southern part of Sweden. The police station is located in Ystad which is near the most southerly part of Sweden, south and east of Malmo and on the Baltic. Malmo itself is on the west coast of Sweden, just 10 km across the narrow straights from Copenhagen. Part of the tale takes place in Malmo.
I will not give away the plot and the essential plot elements are outlined by the publisher: there is a murder of a farmer and an attack on his wife. They live on a remote farm near Ystad. Kurt Wallender and Ryberg along with the other policemen in the Ystad police unit try to solve the crime.
This is a great and a fast read that I was able to read with a great deal of enjoyment in less than a day or two. I read it while staying at a hotel in southern Sweden, not too far from the crime scene, and that the details and descriptions of the places, people, and other details are made to seem authentic.
This is a book that I highly recommend. The writing is smooth and flawless. This is a good story with a realistic plot and a good balance between human interactions and the crime itself. He tries to tie the plot to current social problems in Sweden, and it works effectively.
"For murder, though it have no tongue.......2007-01-16
will speak with most miraculous organ." Hamlet.
An aging farmer and his wife have been brutally attacked on their isolated farm in southern Sweden. They appear to have little money and no enemies. The only clue, if you can call it that is the dying word of the farmer's wife: "foreign". The police have have little else to go on but go on they must. That is the plot for Henning Mankell's first Kurt Wallander detective mystery: "Faceless Killers". The result is a well-done police procedural.
My `discovery' (I know he has already been discovered by millions of readers) of the Kurt Wallander series was the natural result of my reading a series of "Martin Beck" detective mysteries by the husband and wife team of Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall. Wallander, like Beck, is a police detective in Sweden. Unlike Beck, whose beat was Stockholm, Wallander works in the small southern-Swedish city of Ystad. The Wallander series takes place in the 1990s while the Beck series took place in the 1960s and 1970s.
Since this book is the first in a series, it provides the reader with a great deal of background information on the main characters. Wallander is gritty and determined. He is also newly separated from his wife and estranged from his daughter. Further, his father is showing the first signs of senility. Wallander sometimes drinks too much and is clumsy in his dealings with the interim prosecutor, an attractive young woman sent down from Stockholm.
The book moves along at a relatively quick pace. Mankell does a good job of keeping the pot boiling without revealing too much too quickly. The detectives follow false leads and their fallibility adds a nice veneer of realism to the story. The importance of the farmer's wife's last word "foreign" is clear but its meaning is not fully revealed (or proven) until the book's climax.
I enjoyed "Faceless Killers". Although there was nothing uniquely creative or groundbreaking about the plot or its resolution, Mankell tells a good story. He also manages to evoke a compelling picture of life (and police work) in an area as far from Stockholm as you are likely to get. As such these books make a nice contrast with the Martin Beck series. (Mankell does make a quick reference to one of the Beck books, "The Laughing Policeman", so it seems clear that the obvious comparisons between the two books and series are also clear to Mankell.
"Faceless Killers" is worth reading. While I don't think it was the best book in the series (the natural result of having to spend a lot of time with the requisite development of a large number of characters that populate a series), I think it is worth reading. I've read two other Wallander books ("The Dogs of Riga" and "Side-Tracked") to date and have enjoyed both of them. If you like police procedurals and like the idea of a somewhat exotic (if cold) setting, I think you will like "Faceless Killers". L. Fleisig.
Will I read any more Kurt Wallander books?.......2006-11-28
This is my second Kurt Wallander Mystery and the first book in the series. As I mentioned in my review of Side-tracked it is my wife who is Mr. Mankell's big fan having read all of his books. I am not a big mystery fan so it would take a lot for me to be overwhelmed by a police procedural (as I guess they are called). So again here, I was not overwhelmed but I found the book entertaining and well written. Although I find it interesting that the case goes one direction all the way to the end only to have some small clue find things were not as they seemed. In this case the clue was rather hard to believe, but I guess it could happen. Will I read anymore Kurt Wallander books? Well I don't know but I understand Mankell has books with the daughter out now and that might be interesting to take in when the need to just be entertained on a plane is the mission at hand.

Captivating Story.......2006-08-27
This story is awesome. Saikano is a heart wretching story about one couple's will to live and love in the mist of war even in the event of the end of the world. The female lead is a shy, clumsy girl who has been modified by the military into the ultimate weapon. Her boyfriend is just a regular guy trying to come to grips by what is happening to his girlfriend. The author/illustrator does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. The artwork is sketchy but this story is an absolute must read for any Manga fan. This Manga is for mature readers. It is 7 volumes.
A story this good deserved art and writing to match........2006-03-10
I really wanted to like this manga. The story is compelling, the reader can identify with the characters, and the ending is EXTREMELY disturbing and thought-provoking. There are, however, two big problems with the series as a whole.
One, while the draftsmanship is competent enough to get the point across, the sketchy, tossed-off character art looks unskilled to my eye. The lines are all of the same width, and while computer compositing is used extensively to try to give a sense of depth, the lack of contrast makes the whole affair look somewhat monotonous. It is serviceable art, but no more.
But the real failure of Saikano is the writing. Words in a graphic narrative should be as few as possible and carefully chosen. Takahashi's characters talk too much, drowning any emotional resonance in endless dialogue--their internal monologues are especially bad. The dialogue itself isn't terrible, there's just far, far, too much of it. the pages are jammed with it, giving the manga a very cluttered, claustrophobic feel that makes for an unpleasant reading experience. In my first review, I laid a hefty portion of blame on the translation team, but upon re-reading the series I realize that I was being unfair (sincerest apologies, Mr. Caselman). The translation is actually quite decent, with only a few obvious missteps. The blame lies with the source material. _Saikano_ has a serious telling-instead-of-showing problem.
There are so many moments in this manga that could have been great, if only the characters had known when to shut up, if only the dialogue had been a little less maddeningly vague, if only the art had been up to the task, if only, if only, if only. Too many "if onlys". It's still worth reading for the story, but the missed opportunities made me sadder than the tragic human drama _Saikano_ attempts to describe.
Incredible.......2005-12-22
Saikano is one of the most incredible manga I have ever read. However, its not for everyone. Saikano is the most depressing story I have ever read, and this volume in particuar is heartbreaking. I cried my eyes out reading it.
The one problem I have with this release is that Viz translates all the sound effects and they are really really ugly. Dont let that stop you from buying it, just be aware that some of the art is ruined by the translation.
A sweet and sad love song.......2005-07-20
I had first heard of the anime adaptation of Saikano, but being more of a manga fan myself I went to read that instead. The series itself is interesting, as you don't find out who's fighting who, and what it's all over. Maybe it's better that way, you can't really put yourself for any particular side or point of view about the war itself. Because the war isn't really the story.
Shuji and Chise begin their relationship like many normal high school couples, in that sweet, awkward, and innocent manner that many of us remember. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Chise is the ultimate weapon in this war, and as she becomes more capable in her duty as a weapon, her humanity is stripped away. As the war moves in on their sleepy town, they try to fall in love.
For myself, it takes something very well written to get me emotional, and I found myself nearly in tears by the end of several volumes. You know where the series is headed, and especially by the sixth volume, it's very apparent that it will not be a happy ending for Chise and Shuji. It's an extremely emotional story, but also very violent and sexually explicit at times, so a warning to parents. However, it's never thrown in there just for the sake of having sex and violence; it's vital to the storyline. The violence shows the horror of war and how it intimately effects those involved. Sex is present because the characters are desprately trying to hold on to something. Chise wants to feel love to remind herself that she truly is human.
In essence, this is a sweet, funny, sad, and heartbreaking series to read. In honesty, it is the best that I have read, and is well worth the money.
A Love Story for everyone.......2005-06-30
I usually hate any love stories. I just meet them with cold unethusiasm because no one seems to get it right enough. Well, this story doesn't just get it right, it gets to the point that anyone-even the cynic- can see love as the most beautiful and painful thing there is.
The thing I noticed about the story is that the situation with Chise is treated in a very unusual way- probably the best of any high-schooler-in-a-war-zone story I've ever seen. The military talk is technical, official, and it completely goes over Chise's head- which is why it's perfect, because realistically they wouldn't break formalities to accomadate one confused schoolgirl, even if she is the megaweapon. So it sounds authentic, but not tedious at all. It sets up the book as more believable and Chise as more likable.
The story's in Shuji's point of view most of the time, but it goes to Chise once in a while. So you hear everything first hand from one of the lovers. And you see how much his love for Chise consumes and scares him, but not in a sappy way-in a very heavy, desperate, and determined way. It literally puts love in perspective. There's a lot of words, but they're emotional words, and you'll find yourself going slower than you usually would with a manga so Shuji's deep inner thoughts on love reaches you better. You'll read them over and over and then sit quietly in reflection. This manga is something that has a lot of reread value, because of course everyone's feelings on love changes as time goes on.
The art is... what I'd call evanescently innocent. Most of the pictures look a little ghostly. But the characters are cute abnd childish for the seriousness of the story, and sketchy. Though highly stylized, it fits the plot perfectly. Saikano's trademark feature, though, would be the nonstop blushing.
The relationships between all the characters-major and minor- are simply amazing.I f you've ever been in love, it'll break your heart- and if you haven't, you'd wish you'd had been just so you could understand.

The return of a beloved classic,
from the bestselling author of The Princess Bride!
Once upon a time, the gondoliers of Venice possessed the finest voices in all the world. But, alas, few remember those days--and fewer still were ever blessed to hear such glorious singing. No one since has discovered the secret behind the sudden silence of the golden-voiced gondoliers. No one, it seems, but S. Morgenstern. Now Morgenstern recounts the sad and noble story of the ambitions, frustrations, and eventual triumph of Luigi, the gondolier with the goony smile.
Here, in this brilliantly illustrated exposition of the surprising facts behind this all-but-forgotten mystery, S. Morgenstern reveals the fascinating truths about John the Bastard, Laura Lorenzini, the centenarian Cristaldi the Pickle, Enrico Caruso, Porky XII, the Great Sorrento, the Queen of Corsica--and of course, the one and only Luigi. His tale will captivate you as much as his song!

A great (if quick) read.......2007-04-01
While I was surprised at how quick a read this was (I got through it in two lunch breaks at work) it was still an enthralling read. Goldman has the ability to let you feel his characters in only a few lines and this is no exception. By the time I reached the end I felt as emotionally invested in the hero as I did when reading the Princess Bride. I have noticed other people have given this book low marks solely because it "isn't the Princess Bride". While I agree the Princess Bride is by far the better book I feel it is unfair to dismiss this book as poor based on the comparison. It would be like saying The Hobbit was a 1 star book because The Lord Of The Rings was better.
punchy prose style.......2007-01-03
Goldman writes this novella with the same irreverant style he used for "The Princess Bride." It's a cute little story about a man who loves to sing but is so horrible that the entire city of Venice pelts him with garbage.
It flashes back and forth through the decades of the twentieth century and tells a cute little story but never quite achieves the grandeur of Goldman's other works.
As a stand alone book it doesn't really hold up, it might have been better as an extra in yet another version of Bride. For my money I felt there should have been more.
A cute, quick read........2006-10-12
This is a cute little fable that's quick and easy to read. I was, however, a little disappointed. I expected something a little more like "The Princess Bride", considering that it was written by William Goldman (and that the S. Morgenstern device was used again). On its own, it's a nice little story. Just don't compare it to "The Princess Bride".
A great old-fashioned story.......2006-03-11
A classic book with an old-fashioned fairytale feel. If you love The Princess Bride as I do, you will instantly fall in love with Luigi and his "never give up" attitude. He is the unsong hero, the quiet guy in the background getting on with his life as best he can. He bears many similarities in my view to dear Wesley of The Princess Bride but in a more unassuming way. It is a really sweet book and I loved every page of it.
It's no Princess Bride.......2005-11-03
After reading The Princess Bride, few books will meet its standards...So, with HUGE expectations, I read The Silent Gondoliers. It was a big dissapointment! It would be an ok childrens book...but it lacked the wit and great storyline that I've come to expect from William Goldman.

O sole mio, share this with your children.......2006-03-20
I read this book this morning for breakfast and will read it again later tonight for dessert.
This gorgeous little fable turns words so well it deserves to be read aloud, to your children, to your lover, whomever. I found it even more charming than "The Princess Bride."
Luigi is an affable every-man who simply has a dream. I fell in love with him, thinking about him in his gonodolier's costume poling down The Grand Canal with his godawful singing voice, the latter of which resonates personally for me. Also, like Luigi, I have a goony smile.
Hopefully I'll visit Venice someday, and until then, this book will take me there whenever I wish.
I found my copy yesterday in my favorite used book store, (shout-out to Book Castle in downtown Burbank) and it's in perfect condition. Even the dust jacket is as crisp as it was back in 1983. The illustrations are flawless and exactly what would excite a child's imagination.
I notice this version is only available used. Buy it and promise to read it aloud. It will not disappoint.
A wonderful book by the author of the Princess Bride.......2003-01-10
I've had this book forever and had no idea it was rare. I love it because it is clear at a younger age but doesn't get boring or repetitive, as one of those classic books that just get better. I think it is superior to the Princess Bride as the characters are beleivable. I highly recommend it!
This book is almost as sweet as The Princess Bride........1999-04-18
I found this book in a used bookstore and couldn't believe my luck. For a second I thought it proved the existence of Morgenstern...but the Goldman style is easy to recognize. This is a great book, but like ALL Goldman titles it is really hard to find. It's worth the effort!!
Why is this out of print?!.......1999-01-22
This is a great book, and it deserves to be in print! I stumbled across it in a university library (if you've ever searched for light reading in a library geared for research, you'll realize how lucky I was) and it was very good. I think in some ways I liked it better than THE PRINCESS BRIDE. I think that maybe have been because Luigi, the main character, wasn't perfect at all the way Buttercup and Wesley were. (Well, Buttercup was too stupid to be perfect, but otherwise . . .) If you can find a copy of it, read it!
This book is the funniest I've read in awhile!.......1998-12-13
I rarely laugh outloud at a book, but The Silent Gondeliers had me literally falling out of my chair. A fellow singing friend of mine happened to see me reading The Princess Bride at one of our rehearsals. I mentioned how much I loved that book, and he pulled from his bag, this great book! "Well, if you like William Goldman, you'll love this one!" As an opera singer, I could appreciate much of the humor. It's about a gondelier who cannot sing, and how his mishaps are the reason why today's gondeliers are silent. Wonderful book!

The New Doubleday Cookbook.......2007-09-19
I was given this book by a friend several years ago and consider it my "Kitchen Bible". It is the most complete cook book I have ever seen (and I've seen 100's). The directions are straightforward and clear and there are recipes for everything from Baba Ganush to Cherries Jubilee.
I have purchased a new copy of The New Complete Doubleday Cook Book for a friends birthday present. It is a "Cook's cook book."
The Singe Best All-Purpose Cookbook in Print.......2007-09-02
I bought my first copy of THE DOUBLEDAY COOKBOOK when it was first published in the mid-70s. It's been the kitchen resource I turn to most for answering questions and for ideas about a recipe. I own many all-purpose cookbooks, including JOY OF COOKING, which I've always found difficult because of the way the recipes are layed out on the page. THE NEW DOUBLEDAY COOKBOOK is more sophisticated, and when Nancy Evans was publisher of Doubleday in the late 80s, she ordered a big overhaul of the book and it was redesigned and re-jacketed. The results were even more impressive. I often give it as a wedding gift. The selection of recipes is vast and covers just about all the great classics. Jean Anderson is one of the great unsung heroines in cooking. The information she provides on everything from ingredients, cooking, storage, equipment, alcohol and wines, preserving, and so much more is what makes this book have pride of place in my cookbook collection. You can find out how to boil an egg, prepare lasagne, bake a loaf of bread, or stun your guests with Lobster Americaine. Indispensible.
A very serviceable, if unspectacular, all-in-one book on basic American home cuisine.......2007-08-20
The cover pretty much says it all - this is a very solid, all around, all under 1 cover compendium of basic no-frills american home cooking. This is the kind of book you give as a bridal shower gift. It's well edited, it's stood the test of time, and it's earned a spot atop my fridge. Personally, I prefer "The New Complete Joy of Cooking" better, and mostly relegate this book to fill in any gaps not covered adequately by the former.
Don't bother looking for anything fancy, nor should you expect to find any pictures (there are none). This is just an all-purpose A-Z culinary tome of basic recipes.
Recommended. A very adequate, albeit decidedly unspectacular, offering.
The "go to" cookbook when in doubt........2007-07-27
In over 20 years of owning this cookbook I have never one time made a bum recipe from it! As a young bride it was the cookbook that taught me the most about cooking, and to this day if I need to find a recipe, chances are it's in there. I will get one of these for each of my children when they get married.
Best Basic Cookbook on the Market.......2007-07-21
This is my all purpose wedding shower gift. I am a professional chef and no one has ever exceeded Jean Anderson's extraordinary skills in recipe writing for clarity, editing and successful results across the entire spectrum of the culinary arts. It is my basic reference, though I have hundreds of other cookbooks.
