Enter the mind of an obsessive killer - and an obsessive hunter - is there that much of a difference?.......2007-09-13
Sandford is a brilliant writer and he shows how Lucas Davenport - the hero of the series - is walking that thin, sharp line between hero and villain right now. Suffering from depression (and likely post-traumatic stress disorder after the events in the preceeding book, Shadow Prey (Lucas Davenport Mysteries)), Lucas lets his temper take control early on while hunting down a young pimp who beat up one of his hookers - a young lady who was one of Lucas' snitches. This subsequently leads to an IA investigation at the worst possible time, because Lucas is then assigned to work on a new case - a well-known doctor's wife (Stephanie Bekker) has been murdered in their home, and her eyes cut out - an anonymous phone call alerted the police. When there is another murder, Davenport begins to suspect there might be a serial killer on their hands - even though he cannot make a connection between the two women.
Things heat up quickly in the novel and I have only given you a very bare bones idea of the plot - I don't want to spoil this novel for anyone who hasn't already read it. I love this series and this book is an exemplary example of why I feel about these books as I do. Lucas Davenport feels like a real person, with real problems that he deals with in a real manner - that is, sometimes self-destructively. I highly recommend this entire series to anyone who enjoys a good thriller, police procedural or murder mystery. You can't go wrong with the Lucas Davenport series.
Sorry, but I really don't like this one.......2007-08-23
John Sandford is not the best of crime novel writers but he's not bad. I've read a couple other Prey books and have enjoyed them. They're good books to take to the beach or to read on a plane. The nice thing about them is that they don't require much concentration.
I am disappointed in this one. In fact, I'm only half way through and I don't think I'm going to finish it. What's the problem? It drags too much. I want a crime novel that is hard to put down. This one is easy to put down but hard to pick up again. Let me give an example. One of the main characters has a drug addiction. Sandford wastes pages (and virtually chapters) describing this guy's drug induced states. I got the idea the first time so I didn't need these descriptions repeated every couple of chapters. In fact, I've skipped those pages and haven't missed anything.
Other parts of the book are equally slow and boring. I'll try another of the Prey novels but will give up on Sandford if I find the same style.
Another great one.......2007-05-17
I was thrilled to have another Prey novel to read. Eyes of Prey lived up to my expectations and was a great addition to the Prey series.
Strong Entry in Prey Series.......2007-05-04
EYES OF PREY is the third entry in the "Lucas Davenport" series, and it's a strong effort. I liked this novel much better than the second in the series, SHADOW PREY, but less than the first in the series, RULES OF PREY.
The major strength of this novel is the villain, who is a truly despicable character. He is an easy person to hate, which makes for a classic "good vs. evil" kind of story. And, of course, Sandford is a highly entertaining writer -- that's what makes this books so popular. All his books are leanly written, fast paced and clever.
I thought the major problem with this novel was the lack of mystery. There is absolutely no question who the villain is and how he commits his crimes. The reader is almost always a few steps ahead of the characters. The only major shocking twist comes at the very end of this novel, but I was hoping for more surprises than I got.
The Prey novels aren't for everyone. If you dislike profanity and morally ambiguous characters, these books aren't for you. But I find them, for the most part, to be enjoyable, fast-paced fun. My advice is to read this books in order to maximize your enjoyment. In particular, read EYES OF PREY before reading SILENT PREY, which is a direct sequel to EYES.
Eyes that can't quit........2007-01-18
I could not put this book down. I started reading it as I walked away from my mail box and did not quit until finished. This book will keep your interest. I love John Sanford's books, I think this is one of the best.
Customer Reviews:
John Sandford is a literary genius!!.......2006-07-24
Johns books are addictive,if you buy one, you will ultimatly want to buy them all.Exspecially if you start with this book
rules of prey,it reads fast....and your heartbeat does its
best to keep up.
3 Prey's back to back. What more could you want?.......2001-02-21
If you want a book that will you can't put down, well then this is the one for you. I have all the Prey novels and to date I can trully say that they have been the best reads ever. Davenport is one hell of a cop, and delivers justice in the best two fisted way I've come to read. The Criminals are dark and sinister, and I know these three stories will keep the reader rivited till the end and still wanting more. I know I did, and can't wait for the next one.
John Sanford is the best !.......1999-12-12
I have read all of the Prey series and am a really big fan. I wasn't always a person who does alot of recreational reading . But once i started the Prey series I can't stop I have read them all and am ready for his next release. I still think my favorite was Rules of Prey.
The most evil villains I have ever read........1998-08-22
I have read five of the "Prey" novels so far, including these three stories. Obviously, there is something about them that I find attractive, but in retrospect, I cannot honestly say what. The writing style is pleasant, but not taxing, and draws you along. The villains are the most evil people that I have ever read about, and always come to the same end. The number of psychos inhabiting John Sandford's Midwest is truly frightening, yet doesn't seem to surprise the locals. These books are the "sitcom-lites" of literature, but easy and quick to read.
Three great mystery books in one........1997-04-07
Sandford is a master at weaving this type of story. He keeps you reading through all three novels like it was one story. It was nice to see a author finally pick the great state of Minnesota for a setting

A great sequel.......2005-02-28
The sequel to the first, Hungry Eyes, is almost as good as the first. It's addictive, thrilling, and well written. The characters are strong and easily latched on to (except Shara gets on my nerves a little at times.) A lot happens, and the ending was an incredible finish. An excellent sequel to Hungry Eyes, if you were left wanting more -- this is a great runner up. Even as a stand alone book, Eyes of Prey is a great read with a multitude of social commentaries.
eyes of prey.......2003-10-23
This would have to have been the most amazing book i have read to date. Barry Hoffman is superb. I think it was one of those books where you just care so much about the characters and you just get sucked right in. As i said before, an amazing read that i would recommend highly to anyone...
Actually 4 1/2 stars...........2002-08-23
Barry Hoffman has outdone himself again. This sequel to Hungry Eyes is just as good as the original if not better!!!
To my shock, Hoffman has left Leisure because a lack of PR, but this guy is too talented to remain unsigned by a major publishing house. He has a keen insight to sociological issues and is branching out to include the supernatural (Or so I am led to believe by Judas Eyes, which I will review when I get my hot little hands on it). YEAH!!!!
This novel is so good on sooo many levels. Hoffman's signature characterization is splendid here and he includes a whole cast of personalitites here. He writes a smooth story and as previously written in other reviews, he has a clear and concise voice, avoiding "over-writing."
Hoffman is going to become a great writer and I am shocked he is only selling in the 200,000's on Amazon.com. This guy needs to be displayed to the public so they can gobble up everything this man dishes out! I for one am a life-long fan and will search out is work! And I was only so-so happy with the first novel I read by him, BORN BAD. That was a decent novel, still worth reading, just not overtly impressive. Sorry, Barry!!
Look up the Prey series, you'll be glad and so will your mind!!
AN EXCELLENT SEQUEL TO "HUNGRY EYES".......2001-09-24
The second novel in the "Eyes" series by Barry Hoffman is EYES OF PREY. This novel is to HUNGRY EYES what SALEM'S LOT was to CARRIE. It's longer, more detailed, delves deeper into what makes the characters tick, has a number of returning characters from the first novel, and touches somewhat on the supernatural. This time around the story deals with Lysette Ormandy (a.k.a. Cassandra Knight) who was almost beaten to death as a child, while she watched her family being murdered. Now, Lysette's a stripper in Philadelphia and performs under the persona of her assumed name. One night while riding home on the subway, she watches as a mugger pistol-whips an old man for his wallet. Remembering how her family was killed, she recklessly intervenes to help the victim, snatching the gun away from the surprised mugger and then shooting him in the head when he tries to knife her. Believing that the police will arrest Lysette for homicide, the old man tells her to run. It isn't long, however, before Lysette is considered to be a hero by the good citizens of Philadelphia. The police, led by Lamar Briggs and assisted by Deidre Caffrey, want her to voluntarily come in, but something changed within Lysette the night she killed the mugger. She's tired of being a victim and wants to be able to walk the streets at night without fear of being attacked. This leads her to doing what Charles Bronson did in the movie Death Wish--she begins patrolling the streets and playgrounds, killing only when attacked by the night predators. She's soon nicknamed the Nightwatcher, a protector of the people...a woman who isn't going to be intimidated by the muggers and rapists. Soon, the people of the city are rallying against crime and are attempting to take back the streets for their families and children. The police aren't happy with this. They're afraid innocent bystanders are going to be killed before it's over. An all out effort is made to track down the Nightwatcher, but someone else is also looking for her. Feeling connected to this new vigilante in some mysterious way, Shara Farris has returned to the city of brotherly love, instinctively understanding that she's the only one who can find her. EYES OF PREYS takes this remarkable series to a new level of intensity and excitement. Mr. Hoffman delivers in full force, offering us a slightly different take on the usual "vigilante" format, mixed with subtle supernatural overtones. He gives us a darker, more complex lead character in the form of Lysette Ormandy, while at the same time, fleshing out the returning characters of Deidre Caffrey and Lamar Briggs in much greater detail. There's even a secret organization called "The Fist" that's made up of several extremely rich and powerful men, who seek to control the status quo by manipulating events to their own satisfaction, resorting to murder and assassination when necessary. If that isn't enough, there's also an unusual area of woodland near the beach that Lysette likes to frequent in order to relax and calm down from the stress of her rather unusual activities. It's a small forest where strange things seem to happen to those who walk through it. In EYES OF PREY, Barry Hoffman has weaved a delicious morality tale of revenge and redemption, mixed with edge-of-your-seat suspense that keeps the reader turning the pages at a frantic pace, hurrying to find out what happens next, not to mention an array of strong female characters who aren't afraid to take the matter of justice into their own capable hands. I'm anxious to read JUDAS EYES and discover in what the direction the series is now headed. I sincerely hope Mr. Hoffman will further explorer "The Fist" in his future novels. Not only is this is an organization that I want to learn more about, but because of the way it's described, I can't help but wonder if there's an element of truth behind this deadly entity. Anyway, if you want some good bedtime reading, picked up a copy of EYES OF PREY, then check out Mr. Hoffman's other novels, HUNGRY EYES and BORN BAD.
Eyes of Prey.......2000-05-15
Once I started I didn't want to stop. It has just the right amount of suspense, drama, and supernatural and at just the right times. These characters are almost like people he knows rather then people he has created. I didn't read Hungry eyes-yet. But it was nice that these characters were able to stand by themselves without having to read a book before or after to figure out who they are. I know they have a history; I don't need every detail as to why shara and deirdre have the relationship they do I know them and I can fill in the blanks...I eagerly await any sequels and hope Barry hurries up...

Fifty issues--collected into 15 volumes that total 2,000 pages--the Hernandez brothers' Love and Rockets is an enormous achievement that helped to create a new audience for comics. Notable for their strong female characters and their focus on relationships, rather than on traditional comic-book 'action', the stories collected in this volume, and the rest of the series, show how the comic format can be used to create characters and situations as detailed and compelling as in any novel.
Reviewers have compared Gilbert Hernandez's work--set in the fictional Latin American town of Palomar--with that of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Robert Altman. Reading his brother Jaime's work--most of which focuses on a group of Southern California Mexican American women--is like reading Tolstoy, if only Tolstoy had written about twenty-something punk girls. Love and Rockets has certainly earned its legendary reputation among the comic-book cognoscenti, and deserves to be read by an even wider audience. Welcome to the world of Los Bros Hernandez.

Book Description
Brain Plague is the new hard SF novel by Joan Slonczewski, set in the same future universe as her award-winning A Door into Ocean and The Children Star (a New York Times Notable Book). An intelligent microbe race that can live symbiotically in other intelligent beings is colonizing the human race throughout the civilized universe. And each colony of microbes has its own personality, good or bad. In some people, carriers, they are brain enhancers, and in others a fatal brain plague, a living addiction. This is the story of one woman's psychological and moral struggle to adjust to having an ambitious colony of microbes living permanently in her own head. This novel is one of the most powerful and involving SF novels of the year. AUTHORBIO: Joan Slonczewski lives in Gambier, Ohio and teaches biology at Kenyon College.
Customer Reviews:
Please write more books Joan!.......2006-03-28
IMHO, Joan is one of the best fiction writers ever. I've read all of her books, including this one. I have not read a mediocre one yet; the characters and landscapes are interesting, believeable and engaging. Her scientifically-based plots are supurbly conceived and flawlessly executed (yeah I know that sounds cheezy).
I keep checking Amazon periodically in hopes she publishes something else. Someday maybe I'll luck out and find she has given up 'real science' in the 'real world' to focus on her incredible gift. In case you are ego-surfing Joan my message to you is-you gotta retire sometime and you gotta do something interesting when you retire-so how about some creative writing, please?
Fascinating concept, with a bit of a nit.......2004-10-15
I loved the idea, and I loved the libertine Eleutherian community and their nightclubs. Now the microbes experience an entire lifetime in the equivalent of human weeks. Hence my nits. Chrys, God of Mercy, experiences conversation with her various people in her 'real time', yet, so apparantly do the Eleutherians. Shouldn't a conversation be taking place over a span of Eleutherian days? Or weeks? She closes her eyes for 2 minutes to punish people with an eclipse lasting months(?). Yet she sleeps, waking every 2 hours so her people won't start misbehaving - Is that not the equivalent of decades 'without the sun'?
Hardly as original as Blood Music.......2004-07-20
And the micros are psychologically too much like people. But it does raise a number of interesting points, and it's a fun read. And I wanted to give it 3 stars, but Amazon is insisting on two.
Great Book!.......2003-08-09
I really love the idea of a symbiotic relationship with a civilization of microscopic organisms. The book explored this complex topic without becoming more technical than any average reader can understand. I liked the universe the author had set up so much that I read all the other books part of the Elysium universe, and they were just as great as this one.
The realistic element of still having corruption, violence, and abuse in society made the story seem more life-like rather than having it as a perfect future where society is self-sufficient and without crime.
This book had everything I could want in a science fiction novel: adventure, conflict, character development & interaction, as well as that undefineable element of a good story that won't let you put the book down until you're done reading it.
I highly recommend this and other books by this author to any Science Fiction fan.
Powerful, lyrical story about technology, art, & being human.......2002-04-26
Brilliant, powerful, beautiful -- at times terrifying, at times humourous -- with finely developed characters from the human protagonist to the generations of microbial creatures developing in her brain. The story is deep without being pretentious, fast-paced and thrilling but with an attention to detail. I picked this up, of all places, in a supermarket, because the cover caught my eye. I have not read any of this author's previous work, but I'm looking forward to reading anything else available. It's been a long time since a story captured my imagination so completely that I would give up a night's sleep to read it through to the end. Dawn is nearly here, I've turned the last page, and my very first thought was to write a review.
The protagonist, Chrysoberyl, is an artist who creates moving sculptures of light, and the author paints each creation in vivid description. The story deftly moves the reader from the infinitesimal world in Chrys' mind, through the various environments of the "outside" world, through art galleries and slums and mansions and soup kitchens and nightclubs. Chrys' story plays out in a relatively short space of time, while that of the microbes she interacts with spans hundreds of their generations. In contrast, in the outside world there are humans, unlike Chrys, whose lifespans are centuries long. All the varying cultures maintain a faltering balance, threatened by the "brain plague" of uncontrolled nano-infestation, the victims of which are scorned as "vampires." When Chrys volunteers to become host to a presumable benign colony, she finds herself at the thin line between "carrier" and "vampire."
Cybertech is not my usual reading choice, because it often feels impersonal to me, more about ideas than humanity, but this story is as human as it gets, examining the impulses that make us creative, loving, hate-filled, loyal, worshipful, petty, just. The integration of human brain with this sort of nanotechnology is rushing toward us ever more quickly -- with its advantages and disadvantages, its benefits and threat of brain plagues. It may be a long time before every facet of our livesisare ruled by nanotechnology, but this book gives us a glimpse of what we might hope or fear to become, and a solid story, as well.

If you or a family member has diabetes, food preparation may seem like a chore or a deprivation. What can you cook that tastes good and fits the diabetes guidelines? The authors of Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies, diabetes expert Alan Rubin (who also wrote Diabetes for Dummies) and registered dietician Fran Stach, have come up with dishes that will please not just the person with diabetes but the whole family. The diabetes diet is healthy for all of us, and if we can make it taste good, we all benefit.
That's where this book shines. The 112 recipes are as creative and tasty as they are healthy, yet most take a half hour or less of preparation (plus cooking time). Recipes include Soy Waffles, Crispy Corn French Toast, Portobello Paté, Carrot Soup with Leek and Blood Orange, Mango Tortilla Salad, Oriental Beef and Noodle Salad, and Spaghetti Squash with Fresh Basil, plus a variety of fish, meat, and poultry entrées. Some of the recipes were created by chef Denise Sharf; others were contributed by gourmet restaurants. All recipes include nutritional information: calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, fiber, sodium, and exchanges.
Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies is more than a compilation of recipes. The book also gives guidelines for "what, when, and how much" to eat, including tips for visualizing portions (an ounce of meat is the size of a matchbox; an ounce of cheese is the size of a domino; a medium potato is the size of a computer mouse). You'll get shopping and cooking tips and illustrated food-preparation steps to help novice cooks.
Like the whole For Dummies line, the style is simple, friendly, clever, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, such as, "Don't go to a paint store and expect to get thinner there." -- Joan Price

i bought this book a couple of years ago, because my partner is diabetic and i wanted to know how to cook for her. the recipes in here are all good, and sound delicious, but most are too involved to be practical for everyday cooking. more helpful would have been how to make regular foods diabetic-friendly. there are some good chapters explaining diabetes and carbs and all that, but the actual cookbook part could use some work.
Very good.......2007-06-27
Unfortunately, my husband is a very picky eater and didn't care for many of the recipes but I enjoyed them (him being the diabetic). Very good information in this book.
My girlfriend who I gave it to loves it!!.......2007-03-09
Gave as gift to someone who just got diagnosed with the possibility of getting diabetes. But now I want my own copy. Just to be informed.
Very Misleading Book.......2007-02-22
This book didn't give enough information, and it was very misleading.
Look for Dr. McDougall's books on Amazon. Or, if you google Dr. McDougall, you can go to his website and see what he has to say about diabetes. Numerous studies show about 75 percent of type 2 diabetes is completely curable - within 10 days - by changing your diet. Period. You can come off all medication and insulin. He gives the information you need, completely free, on his website. Use his method, and you'll soon see your blood sugars return to normal . . . but then the various companies that make a fortune off diabetes will suffer.
Another thing about this dummies book: It's chock-full of ads. The author heavily peppers his writing with all sorts of product endorsements and gets kickbacks for them.
You might want to read Dr. Neal Barnard's Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes Without Drugs before you jump to conclusions. He is president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (a nonprofit organization with a lot of highly respected members.) He has a lot of respectable physicians endorsing his work. I encourage anyone reading this to search for his book on Amazon. You'll find it doesn't have any ads and no kickbacks from the big drug companies like the "Dummies" books.
A helpful gift.......2007-01-09
