An Edgar Award nominee (for her first legal thriller, Everywhere That Mary Went), Lisa Scottoline actually won the Edgar for her follow-up, Final Appeal. With five legal thrillers behind her, Scottoline--a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School--has joined the league of lawyers-turned-literaries.
Her voice in Final Appeal is crisp and wry; of the law clerks in her office, the narrator declares that she's got "pantyhose with more mileage ... and better judgment."
Lawyer and single mom Grace Rossi has taken a part-time job in a federal appeals court. Her lover and boss, the chief judge, is found dead, and Rossi plays the sleuth. As her previous bestsellers, Scottoline can create feisty female characters who struggle with a variety of issues, producing a fast-paced, well-structured read.

Female attorney is stalked.......2006-09-28
Mary DiNunzio and her twin sister Angie have taken very different paths in life. Angie chose to become a nun, while Mary is a lawyer in a high-pressure law practice, working hard and hoping to become a partner. Things seem to be heading in the right direction for Mary except that she keeps receiving mysterious notes and phone calls which show that the one who is sending them knows more about Mary than she would like. The other problem in her life is recovering from the death of her beloved husband, Mike, and trying to decide if she's ready for a relationship with one of the other attorneys in the firm. This is the first novel by the talented Lisa Scottoline who quit being a lawyer so that she could write about them. Through the years she has perfected her style in which she creates a feisty, female attorney and surrounds her with an interesting and fast-paced plot. The combination makes for a very good read.
Not great ending.......2006-07-19
I was very disapointed in the ending of the book. It started out strong with the background of Mary and her career at the Law Firm. We are introduced to all of the potential suspects and off we go. I started getting caught up in the book and the suspense was starting to build about who was stalking Mary. What a disapointment the ending was. Very neatly wrapped up but really lost the suspense and interest for me. You didnt really get a sense of why this person was stalking her. There was nothing in that charachter that really lets you believe that he is a stalker. Not enough background on the stalker to really make you feel it.
This book BLOWS.......2006-07-04
What a lame "story." If you like it, especially the ending, you are dumb. You're probably also dyed blond and have scoliosis and wear parachute pants all the time.
Decent but not great.......2006-01-15
Mary DiNunzio is an associate at a reputable Philadelphia law firm and is arguing a motion in court for the second time. She is nervous, but well prepared. When the judge embarasses her by making her sing her client's jingle in open court she is reminded of how hard she has to work to impress and succeed in a profession dominated by men. She workes tirelessly everyday while also dealing with the memory of her husband who was killed less than a year prior in a hit and run car crash.
When Mary wins her motion she is, at first, elated, but when mysterious unsigned notes start showing up in her mail she worries that they might be tied to a recent string of hangup calls she is receiving. Then her male secretary is killed before her eyes in a hit and run crash that is eerily similar to the death of her beloved husband. She takes comfort in the arms of Ned Waters, coworker and law school classmate. But what she initially takes for love and affection may prove to be more than is appropriate in a healthy relationship. Mary finds herself looking over her shoulder trying to determine who, if anyone is out to get her and what their motive is. All the while, she is focused on preventing these threats from interfering with her continuing on the law firm partership track.
This is Lisa Scottoline's first novel that introduces Mary and Judy Carrier, each who play prominently in this series of legal thrillers that features strong female lawyers. The book is an easy read and fairly entertaining. I also continue to enjoy how Scottoline changes the narrator and point of view for each book, but continues to include the same cast of characters and revolve around their interactions and legal achievements.
The downside of this book is that it is very reminiscent of her novel Courting Trouble which I happened to read prior to this one. Maybe it is more accurate to say that Courting Trouble resembles this book given the order in which they were written, but it was disappointing to read this one and wonder if I had actually read this book before, or if it was just extremely similar and familiar to some of the others.
This series continues to be entertaining, but it is not particularly fantastic. Scottoline's plots are not overly original and sometimes her heroine's are a bit weak, but overall they are page turners and worth continued reading.
Now I know why..........2005-10-02
I have read ALL Lisa Scottoline's books and wondered why poor Mary is always getting shot at, and in the very first book the pace is set for our "heroine"
As always a page turner
Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Lisa Scottoline's first two novels,
Everywhere That Mary Went and
Final Appeal, are available in one volume. A sure treat for Scottoline's legions of fans,
Lisa Scottoline: The First Two Novels is the ultimate collectible.
Everywhere That Mary Went introduces one of Lisa Scottoline's most beloved characters, fledglinglawyer Mary DiNunzio, who uses her wit -- and her heart -- to catch a killer. Mary's been trying to make partner in her cutthroat Philadelphia law firm, so she's too busy to worry about crank phone calls she's been getting, until they fall into a sinister pattern. Soon she can't shake the sensation that someone is watching her, following her every move. The shadow-boxing turns deadly when her worst fears are realized, and Mary has to fight for something a lot more important than partnership -- her life.
Final Appeal, winner of the Edgar Award, features law clerk and single mother Grace Rossi. Starting over after a divorce, Grace takes on a part-time job with a federal appeals court judge, but she doesn't count on being assigned to an explosive death-penalty appeal. Nor does she expect ardor in the court, in the form of an affair with her boss, Chief Judge Armen Gregorian. Then the truly unimaginable happens, and Grace finds herself investigating a murder. She searches for the truth, unearthing a six-figure bank account kept by a judge with an alias and following a trail of bribery and corruption. In no time at all, Grace under fire takes on a whole new meaning.

If there were 10 stars, that's what I'd give all Lisa's books!.......2007-02-07
This gal will make you laugh out loud whether you're listening to one of her books or reading it. She's got a great banter with the characters and the Italian influence (if you are Italian or know Italians) is so great and so right on! Every book of Lisa's that I've read (and that's nearly all of them) has been just a terrific enjoyable ride. She's superb and on the level of Susan Isaacs whom I consider another great author. Take the time to research the books in order and read them that way. The female characters are just simply dynOmite! You'll love every one of them and the books take twists you'd never expect. Excellent mysteries and the all girl law firm is wonderful.
Barbara Rosenblat reads all of Lisa's books and she is such a skilled narrator...you've just got to listen to at least one on tape. I don't know how Lisa chose her, but she's a total delight and makes the books even more enjoyable!

Timely communication to advise that there was a stock problem. Very professional.

Super Reader.......2007-08-04
For a Lankhmar book, The Knight and Knave of Swords is quite a weighty tome. Fahrd begins by learning to get along without a left hand, a problem yet again caused by those annoying god types. Hanging around leisurely should be peaceful, shouldn't it? Not when they have two women around, and others that would like a little payback coming. This is the weakest of the series.
Knight and Knave of Swords : 01 Sea Magic - Fritz Leiber
Knight and Knave of Swords : 02 The Mer She - Fritz Leiber
Knight and Knave of Swords : 03 The Curse of the Smalls and the Stars - Fritz Leiber
Knight and Knave of Swords : 04 The Mouser Goes Below - Fritz Leiber
Arrows magical and mundane, with a nasty fish woman on the end of one.

Original mood and lead characters undermined by voyeurism.......2003-12-04
I've read this book years ago, at the end of the rest - so obviously I didn't mind the series. But I'm wondering if Book 7 was a particularly low point!
Sure, Lieber has created a distinctive world, with some distinctive characters. The mythology underpinning it (of mercurial and at times petty gods) is refreshingly original, and now and then our heroes find themselves caught up in some dreamlike event utterly beyond their control. He creates his own mood.
But, blimey, the prurience. Like, really seedy, man. Sure, I could handle the comic 007/Capt. Kirk style antics of swooning bikini clad babes turning up at the most unlikely (and frequent) intervals - as long as they merely work as props/scenery, taking up, say, as much space as the next tavern or horse, and don't distract from the strengths of the book, such as characters, nice genre ideas, and novel plotting. But perhaps Lieber was still caught up with that 70s, Hugh Hefner is cool - everyone else is repressed nonsense. It's not quite 'The erotic adventures of Fafard and the Grey Mouser', but at times he devotes several pages to gratuitous soft porn about bondage and orgies.
Were the earlier books quite as bad as this? I don't think so: I read The Swords of Lankhmar a year or so ago and don't remember such extended voyeurism (nor, however, do I remember much in the way of plot). Maybe I excused it before on the basis of the immediately read earlier books, but now I'm quite happy to get rid of the book, even if it jeopardises my chances of having a full set. Like Julian May's Golden Torc series, better to leave some holes.
Oh, and I noticed the cover has a ringing endorsement from Michael Moorcock - a very good anti-endorsement in my book. Moorcock was only good when I was 13, and metamorphosed into similarly prurient dross upon re-reading post-puberty.
I just wish this wasn't the end of the series.......2002-10-02
It's been a long time since I read the first 6 volumes in the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser series (about 20 years), and I still can picture the two clearly. The Mouser in particular has always been one of my favorite fictional characters.
This book (a collection of three short stories and a novella) is an excellent addition to the series, and describes some of the Twain's adventures while in their more settled later life on Rime Isle. Leiber's writing style is beautiful, poetic and flows elegantly and smoothly. This is fantasy written for, and meant to be appreciated by adults, rather than for the teenage audience much of the more recent fantasy seems to be written for.
The only reason this doesn't rate 5 stars is because, while it is far better than most fantasy, there are others that are better (e.g. George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire and Steven Erikson's Malazan series.)
The Good...and the Bad.......1999-12-16
I'm mixed in my opinion on this book. I loved the third short story (the name of which escapes me) where our heroes are cursed by the gods and vie with assassins. It's perhaps the best Fafhrd & Mouser story I've read.
The novel included in this volume is awful. Leiber includes gratuitous sex to titillate the adolescent reader. Soft-core pornography. The story is curiously bland as well. The Mouser is trapped underground for a hundred pages, while Fafhrd tries to rescue him. Then Leiber causes Fafhrd to be abducted and pleasured by maidens in a flying airship. It's awful. Really nothing here for the discriminating reader. Leiber should have left the Twain alone.
In which the heroes' adventures come to a fitting end........1997-06-17
A fitting, if somewhat unexpected end to the adventures of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. This book lacks a bit of the majestic prose and black comedy that the previous six were known for, but it gives our beloved pair one last great adventure before retiring.
If you've read the first six books of the 'Swords' cycle (for lack of a better series title) you will enjoy reading this. In it the two heroes retire to live a happy old age, but find much to their own surprise that their legend will live on . . .
In addition the title so perfectly describes the two it is impossible to not have it sitting next to the others on the shelf. I just wish they had included it in the lovely three volume hardcover reprint of the first six books!

Disappointed.......2006-03-16
Reading all of these favorable reviews, I bought this book and couldn't wait to try out the recipes. The first one I tried making was the chicken kebabs which came out tasteless. I love Afghani rice, it is so flavorful so I tried the basic pilau recipe which came out bland and undercooked even though I followed the directions exactly. I am not encouraged to try out the other recipes after such terrible results. I don't think the author has really tested these recipes to make sure the measurements and instructions will produce the intended results. There are no pictures and the format of the book is bound more like a novel than a cookbook making it hard to refer to while cooking.
Written with the amateur in mind..........2006-03-09
This book not only provides the most incredibly comprehensive view into the world that is Afghan cooking, but it's also written with the awkward, amateur cook in mind (i.e. those of us who have no common sense when it comes to the kitchen). I've tried only a few of the hundreds of recipes in it so far, but its inspiring presence on my tabletop brings a sense of excitement to each of my weekends, when I will venture to try yet another one of Sabri's culinary treasures. Hooray - Afghan cooking is now a DYI reality!
Thank You Helen!.......2005-09-09
This book is a must have in your library! I think this was one of the most precious gifts my mother could have ever given me!
Thank you Helen and Thank you mom!
These are truely authentic recipes that will delight any home it goes into!
One day, I will pass this book to my children as well!
Thanks,
Maha
Tasting Afghan Cuisine.......2005-08-06
An excellent book -- it begins with a short history of some of the influences of Afghan cookery and includes a list of the common ingredients used by the people. From there, the reader really gets the "feeling" of life in pre-war Afghanistan and the cooking and serving process. Many of the dishes may one day become ubiquitous American favorites, just as pizza and lasagne became favorites here after World War II. A real treat to read and easy to use, as the author give many suggestions for substitutions for ingredients that are not easy to find. I recommend it highly.
Authentic Recipes.......2005-08-06
This was a great help to me as I am married to an Afghan. The terms and method of cooking used help me learn afghan cooking. I recommend this to everyone.
