Book Description
Valerie Simpson is a young female tennis star with a troubled past who's now on the verge of a comeback and wants Myron as her agent. Myron, who's also got the hottest young male tennis star, Duane Richwood, primed to take his first grand slam tournament, couldn't be happier. That is, until Valerie is murdered in broad daylight at the U.S. Open and Myron's number one client becomes the number one suspect.
Clearing Duane's name should be easy enough. Duane was playing in a match at the time of Valerie's death. But why is his phone number in Valerie's black book when he claims only to have known her in passing? Why was she calling him from a phone booth on the street? The police stop caring once they pin the murder on a man known for having stalked Valerie and seen talking to her moments before the murder. But Myron isn't satisfied. It seems too clean for him.
Myron pries a bit and finds himself prying open the past where six years before, Valerie's fiancee, the son of a senator, was brutally murdered by a juvenile delinquent and a straight-A student was subsequently gunned down on the street in retaliation, his death squandered in bureaucratic files. And everyone from the Senator to the mob want Myron to stop digging.
The truth beneath the truth is not only dangerous, it's deadly. And Myron may be the next victim.
In novels that crackle with wit and suspense, Edgar Award winner Harlan Coben has created one of the most fascinating and complex heroes in suspense fiction—Myron Bolitar—a hotheaded, tenderhearted sports agent who grows more and more engaging and unpredictable with each page-turning appearance.

Bolitar is Awesome !.......2007-08-27
Harlan Coben spins a dramatic series with Myron Bolitar that out does Evanovich's Plum. It's intelligent and yet funny, funny. I intend to read the entire awesome Bolitar series.

I've read 3 of the "Myron Bolitar Mysteries" during the past month...what fun! The story lines are very well written; a page-turner filled with intrigue and lots of laughs! I can't wait to read another.
Enjoyed It.......2007-05-10
This is my second Myron Bolitar book. I enjoyed this one just as much as the first. It was definitely easier to figure out who was doing what but you didn't know why or how. I'm not going to write a plot summary since so many others have already did that. I really enjoyed the interplay between the main character, Myron and his friends/coworkers. I love Win. He's so intense. I enjoyed that Mr. Coben brought back a lot of the players from his first book in this series and built on them. I think we're going to find more and more and more out about Win and Myron's past. However, I didn't enjoy that Mr. Coben didn't delve further into the past when he was wrapping the story up. It was almost like he just wanted it to hurry up and end. I would have liked a more detailed ending. I highly recommend this book and this series that Harlan Coben has created.
Fantastic!.......2007-05-10
First time reader of this author and thoroughly enjoyed his humor, depth and understanding of the human "being."
Rollicking Fun!.......2007-04-10
This second installment of the Myron Bolitar series will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. This mystery takes place on the tennis circuit, but you don't have to be a tennis fan to enjoy it.

Please don't read this book!.......2007-04-16
If you read this book, which is part three of Dave Duncan's "A Handful of Men" 4-book series, then you may be tempted to read book four. That would be an utter waste on your part. I really enjoyed Mr. Duncan's "A Man of His Word" series, which is the prequel series to this one, so I picked up this series expecting more of the same or better. Boy, was I wrong! This book itself may deserve 2-3 stars, but bok four, The Living God", is SO bad, that it lowers all of the first three books' levels. It is not just bad. It is attrocious! Only read this series if you really enjoy being disappointed.
Number seven in a wonderful series of eight books.......2006-11-07
"The Stricken Field" is the third volume of "A handful of men" which is iself the second of two marvellous fantasy quartets. (Hence this is the penultimate volume in a series of eight books if you take the two quartets together.)
"A handful of men" is a direct sequel to Duncan's quartet "A man of his word" and is set about 15 years after the last book of that quartet.
The full sequence of eight books is:
A MAN OF HIS WORD
1) The Magic Casement
2) Faery Lands Forlorn
3) Perilous Seas
4) Emperor and Clown
A HANDFUL OF MEN
5) The Cutting Edge
6) Upland Outlaws
7) The Stricken Field
8) The Living God
Each quartet is a full and self-contained story, but in my opinion the eight books work best when read in sequence.
The titles of the four volumes of "A handful of men" are taken from Masefield's poem, "Tomorrow." The lines which inspire the titles are
"Oh yesterday the cutting edge drank thirstily and deep,
the upland outlaws ringed us in and herded us as sheep,
they drove us from the stricken field and bayed us into keep,
But tomorow by the living God, we'll try the game again!"
At the start of "The Stricken Field", Emshandir V has been effectively deposed as Emperor: the ordinary people don't realise this, but all the world's magic users, most of whom have been enslaved, certainly do.
The dwarf sorceror, Zinixio, has formed a coalition of wizards known as "The Covin" who are magically compelled to serve him, and proclaimed himself the Almighty. The Emperor's cousin, Emthoro, sits on the Imperor's throne, disguised to look like Emshandir, but he is Zinixio's puppet.
The deposed Emperor, King Rap of Krasnegar, and Zinixio's warlock uncle Raspnex are still fighting against the power of the covin, but their position is desperate. Meanwhile Zinixio deliberately provokes the worst war for thousands of years, as both dragons and all the other races of men rise against the Empire of the Imps: his plan being to destroy them all to consolidate his power.
Meanwhile Rap's wife Queen Inos and their children face deprivation and danger as they march with the globlin and dwarvish armies.
Superb adventure in a consistent and very clever fantasy world: strongly recommended.
Stricken Field continues the excellence.......2001-06-24
Reviews are usually produced by a strong reaction to a book, either positive or negative, so to say that "The Stricken Field" is a powerful book in a dynamic series is still to state the obvious. It would be likewise obvious to mention that "Stricken Field" is actually part of a series, except that it might not be obvious that it is actually Book 7. Dave Duncan began this tale in the 4-book series "A Man of His Word", where he made every word count, every character real, and every incident matter. Duncan is a wordsmith, who savors his story, and treats his reader with honesty -- that means at times things don't go along storybook lines, and the gritty truth must be faced. The realism of Duncan's fantasy makes it far more satisfying than any other fantasy series I have read. The only books that approach his are Elizabeth Moon's Deed of Paksenarrion series and David Eddings' Belgariad -- and Duncan outshines them all. More than that, Duncan did not sell-out, as did Eddings, in writing his second part to the series: "A Handful of Men" is equal to the preceding four books, and takes us farther yet into a world we love and fear, and hate to leave. Read all eight books.
Rolicking Fantasy.......2000-04-06
This book picks up where Upland Outlaws left off. We see Garth's progression, as well as Rap's now essentially mudane plotting against Zinixo coming to a head. Duncan's writing is, as usual, superb; the way that he ties in his plots with classical literary quotes brings a delightful sense of continuity to each chapter. Only the fact that this book set owes so much to the first keeps it from being five stars.

From the supplier: The Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia is interpreted through 'A Stricken Field,' a novel by reporter Martha Gellhorn. Topics include her use of French General Louis Eugene Faucher as a model for transcending the moral confusion and pessimism which dominated and threatened emerging democracies.

The Bajorans would rather die than abandon their sacred home, but their hastily assembled military fleet does not stand a chance against the awesome power of the Hive. Unless Captain Sisko can penetrate the Hive's defenses--and discover their most closely guarded secret--all of Bajor faces extinction.
Customer Reviews:
Very good story -- almost five stars........2005-04-01
This was a fascinating story, well-told. There was a sufficiency of action, the main characters were handled deftly, the new characters (and the alien race that they were from) were handled extremely well, and were quite interesting. Definitely worth reading; it didn't QUITE "wow" me enough to justify five stars, but it was certainly close.
DS9 #15 Objective: Bajor - DS9 at its best!.......2003-12-07
"Objective: Bajor" is the second of only three novels for this brilliant author, which is truly sad considering how well he writes in this genre. It would be nice to see John Peel make a return to Star Trek in any one of the series. I found his premise, plot setup, execution, pacing and the overall intensity of this novel to be a wonderful addition to the Star Trek Deep Space Nine line of novels.
The one minor detractor is the cover art which the author has nothing to do with is the cover art, which is below the standard fare for the time in which this novel was published.
The premise:
Bajor, one of the most sacred of planets in the Alpha quadrant and also one of the planets most plagued by interlopers and usurpers such as the Cardassian occupation for sixty some years now faces one of its most deadly threats of all. An intergalactic Hive consisting of billions of individuals, warns Bajor and its inhabitants to evacuate or risk being consumed with the planet as it makes its way for Bajor. Given the Bajorans natural tendency towards resistance, they steadfastly stand their ground, preferring death over losing Bajor itself. It is now up to their Emissary, Captain Benjamin Sisko to penetrate the Hive in hopes of stopping their path of destruction from heading towards Bajor...
What follows from there is most certainly a novel which, for its intensity alone, makes it standout among the rest of the numbered novels in the Star Trek Deep Space Nine line of novels. I highly recommend this novel to not only fans of the DS9 novels but to any and all fans of Star Trek fiction. {ssintrepid}
Oh No!!!.......2002-05-13
Major is about to be invaded(agian). This time it is by a race of intergalactic aliens the behave a little 2 much like the borg. A very good read otherwise, shows you at the very least the determination of Bajorian resistance. Sisko is also protrayed as a strong leader. This book does a good job of moving the serise forward.
Worth reading.......2000-09-23
This book gets a passing grade. It holds your interest, but does not present any wonderful new ideas. I think there was potential in the plot, though, for much more. It was going great, and there were some wonderful characterizations of the aliens, but it got bogged down. The visitation of the Prophets at the end is much too easy of a solution. If any time a problem came along Sisko went to the "all-knowing, all-seeing" Prophets, there wouldn't be much conflict at DS9. So if you're looking for that perfect Saturday afternoon adventure, keep looking.
Great!.......2000-02-29
Objective: Bajor is excellent. We get to see Bajoran politics, aliens, and it stays interesting all the way through; no boring parts here. Also, a nice bit of continuity from another book: Gul Gavron is also used in Peel's DS9 children's book, Prisoners of Peace.
Book Description
Pinot noir, the famously elegant, sexy, and capricious red grape of Burgundy, is finally producing impressive wines in North America. Credit talented winemakers, enthusiastic restaurateurs, and consumers in search of alternatives to cabernet and zinfandel. Considered perhaps the ultimate food wine, pinot noir has an allure based on its special combination of aromas, flavors, and mouthfeel; on its legendary capacity to reflect the terroir where it is grown; and on its reputation for being hard to grow and make. This is the definitive work on pinot noir in North America. A comprehensive reference for winemakers and aficionados as well as a sourcebook for casual enthusiasts, it includes extensive historical and viticultural background on pinot noir in the New World and profiles of six dozen prominent producers in California, Oregon, British Columbia, and New York.
John Winthrop Haeger, known for his perceptive wine writing for more than fifteen years, gives contextual and comparative information about pinot noir in Burgundy and then tells the story of wine producers' early failures, frustrations, and breakthroughs in North America. He discusses plant genetics and clones, identifies the essential conditions for really good pinot, tells where the best wines are grown and made, and analyzes the factors that determine wine styles and signatures. In the second part of the book, he presents detailed producer profiles with accessibly written tasting notes on recent and mature vintages. A final section covers glassware, vintages, wine and food pairings, and other matters of interest to consumers. Maps prepared especially for this book cover all the major pinot-producing regions in North America.
Customer Reviews:
Ever Since Sideways.......2007-01-10
Ever since the movie "Sideways," it's been easy to love pinot and to know why. Like the movie's characters, pinot noir (the grape) is unpredictable, occasionally brilliant, often bad and otherwise given to fits and starts of temperment and quirkiness. John Haeger's "North American Pinot Noir" is the backstory. From the grape's historic evolution (probably in Burgundy) to it's spread through North America's most marginal winelands, the pinot story on our continent is one of renegade artisinal winemakers living and dying with fickle vintages and improvised technology and, ultimately, winning the grudging respect of Burgundy's barons. This encyclopedic account starts with the plant, it's natural history (habits, pests, preferences and all) and progresses all the way through it's best products -- the wines themselves. The tasting notes are extensive and regrettably bounded in time, but they offer acclaim to some great vintages and some great vintners. As the book ages, the notes themselves will only serve to remind most of us of what we missed. But as a survey of pinot's great American terroirs and their beautiful fruits, the book confers rich knowlege and a deep sense of why this grape matters. The book is the University of Pinot Noir. For graduate school, find a place that you like -- Dundee HIlls or Santa Maria Bench -- and proceed to the advanced seminars they offer.
Excellent resource.......2006-07-23
As a part-time wine instructor and wine enthusiast, I'm always looking for good resources to share as well as for my own use. This book is simply outstanding: the writing is clear, there is more information than you could ever possibly use, but you don't feel like you're drowning in irrelevant junk. Bravo!
Straight forward without the BS .......2005-01-10
This book gives a very good description of pinot in the USA. It cuts through all the stereotypes assoiciated with growing and making pinot noir, and gives warm-climate growers a second look.
