Mark Sloan receives an interesting package in the mail. It seems that Sloan's noble streak impressed sleazeball private invesitgator Nick Stryker. Stryker had been blackmailing more than a few people that he had been hired to get dirt on. Although the slimy practice made him rich, it also put his life at risk. If something were to happen to him, then Sloan would get the package. Well, something has happened...but is it murder?
Lee Goldberg has crafted a fun adventure for Sloan to undertake, one that is filled with plenty of in-jokes, both personal (Goldberg has a bit of fun with his real life mishap in a McDonald's parking lot) as well as pop culture. The Shield gets parodied and there is a truly inspired riff on all those suave James Bond movies. The Dead Letter also brings back characters from previous DM books, notably The Death Merchant and The Shooting Script. In less than six books, the Diagnosis Murder spin-offs have matured into an excellent series of entertaining mystery novels. Worthwhile reading for mystery buffs, highly recommended.

It's a Monday when Monette Hobbes runs over her husband. Lowell is rushed to Community General Hospital, where he dies despite the efforts of Drs. Mark Sloan and Jesse Travis to save him.
Monette had a decent motive for the murder. Lowell had been having an affair with Monette's daughter from a previous marriage. The strange thing is, the affair had been over for a year, about the time Monette hired PI Nick Stryker to follow her husband.
Nick is no stranger to Mark. The two had reluctantly worked together on a case not that long ago. He's a dishonest PI who would rather blackmail people then present his findings to his clients.
The fact that the affair had been over for a year nags at Mark, and he tries to call Nick. His reward is a box delivered in the mail with a letter asking Mark to use the enclosed blackmail material to solve Nick's murder.
Mark immediately turns the box over to his son Steve, a detective with the LAPD. While Steve begins the process of putting these criminals behind bars, Mark begins to trace Nick's steps in the last few days of his life. What could Nick have done recently to drive someone to kill?
I am addicted to these books. I picked this book up and couldn't stop reading until I had reached the end. The story is engaging with several twists. While I did expect a couple of them, the ending was much more complicated then I expected. The plot moves forward at a steady pace with the initial revelations only leading to more questions until everything begins to fall into place.
As always, Lee Goldberg captures the characters well. These aren't just characters named Mark, Jesse, Steve, Amanda, and Susan, but these are the characters as portrayed by Dick van Dyke and the others on the TV show. Their interactions are right off the screen. Unfortunately, Jesse, Amanda, and Susan don't have much page time in this book, and I really do miss them. Their scenes are memorable, however, with the wonderful teasing and joking I loved from the series. The characters work on their own as well. You don't need to have watched the show to understand their relationships.
There are really only a few new characters that have any significant time, and they are well fleshed out. The others are developed enough for their scene or two, and feel like real people.
These novels are beginning to create their own world apart from the TV show on which they are based. There are several references to events in the previous five books, so it's best to read them in order to avoid being spoiled.
If you haven't yet discovered this fun and inventive series, don't wait another day. Anyone looking for a good read will enjoy these books whether they liked the TV show or not.

I could seriously not put down this book. You get drawn into the intense plot right away, and you die not knowing what turn in the story is written on the next page. I have lost sleep reading this book, and I know it shows just how skilled an author Mary H. Herbert is. Recommendation; read the book!

Book Description
Ocean Under the Ice is the second of four sequels to the science fiction novel Rocheworld by Robert L. Forward (Baen Books, New York, 1990). The other sequels are: Return to Rocheworld, Marooned on Eden, and Rescued from Paradise. In Ocean Under the Ice, the human explorers of the Barnard Star system and their large, friendly, amoebae-like alien friends, the “flouwen”, explore an Europa-like moon about the gas-giant Gargantua. They find two bizarre life forms, one living on the ice, and one living in the ocean under the ice, that are as different and yet as related as butterflies and caterpillars.

This book proved entirely opaque to me: there were so many technical matters presented with no clarification for the non-specialist, and these often matters of life and death for the subs discussed, that I set aside the book in bafflement.

Subs Under Ice is well told and very accurate. Don't expect a "Clancy" type of book, however. The author is a retired military and writes in a succinct military fashion. The story of the skill and bravery of these men is long overdue in telling. My uncle served under John Nicholson aboard Sargo on its journey to the pole so I have been especially eager to read about this chapter of submarine history. I can heartily recomemd this book.

Description:
Based on a new approach for coupled applications of an ice shelf model and an ocean general circulation model, we investigate the evolution of an ice shelf-ocean system and its sensitivity to changed climatic boundary conditions. Combining established 3D models into a coupled model system enabled us to study the reaction and feedbacks of each component to changes at their interface, the ice shelf base. After calculating the dynamics for prescribed initial ice shelf and bathymetric geometries, the basal mass balance determines the system evolution. In order to explore possible developments for given boundary conditions, an idealized geometry has been chosen, reflecting basic features of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, Antarctica. The model system is found to be especially sensitive in regions where high ablation or accretion rates occur. Ice Shelf Water formation as well as the build up of a marine ice body, resulting from accretion of marine ice, is simulated, indicating strong interaction processes. To improve consistency between modeled and observed ice shelf behavior, we incorporate the typical cycle of steady ice front advance and sudden retreat due to tabular iceberg calving in our time-dependent simulations. Our basic hypothesis is that iceberg break off is associated with abrupt crack propagation along elongated anomalies of the inherent stress field of the ice body. This new concept yields glaciologically plausible results and represents an auspicious basis for the development of a thorough calving criterion. Experiments under different climatic conditions (ocean warming of 0.2 and 0.5 ^oC and doubled surface accumulation rates) show the coupled model system to be sensitive especially to ocean warming. Increased basal melt rates of 100% for the 0.5 ^oC ocean warming scenario and an asymmetric development of ice shelf thicknesses suggest a high vulnerability of ice shelf regions, which represent pivotal areas between the Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Southern Ocean.

Lovely, informative book. I took it with me to the health food store so I could have a better idea what to look for. Bulk herbs can be a bit intimidating if you are new to using them. I think this book would be very useful to anyone new to making teas, as well as those who are more experienced.
I like that there are several recipes for teas that have the same effect, such as energizing blends, and that each of the energizing blends is different. For example, The "Good Morning Blend" consists of peppermint, rose hips, ginger, ginko, rosemary, orange peel and anise. "Stamina City" includes dandelion, sarsaparilla, siberian ginseng, rehmannia, cinnamon and licorice. "Damiana Daytime Delight" incorporates oatstraw, damiana, gotu kolo, lemon balm, and clover blossoms, and "Sassy Root Revival" is sarsaparilla root, Siberian ginseng, Korean or Chinese ginseng, yellow dock root, ginger, cinnamon, licorice and orange slices.
I like that rather than tell you how many cups or table spoons of each ingredient, they tell you how many parts (1 part peppermint leaves, 2 parts oat straw, etc), so you can make any quantity you like.
When I went to buy herbs, I looked at all four energy recipes and bought a few ingredients from each (couldn't afford all of them and some herbs are more expensive than others). Although I haven't actually tried a recipe, I can tell the authors know what they are talking about. The cool thing is, you can tweak things and create your own blends, and you don't have to follow the recipes to a "tea".
Also included is a section on brewing and blending, gathering and storing, and getting to know the herbs. The recipes are divided by category based on what you wish the tea to do for you. For example, there are detox teas, teas to combat acne, tummy aches, female issues, teas for sleeping, and stress, as well as many others.
The book is well laid out and easy to understand. In the back of the book, the herbs are alphabetized with a section about each herb. Each herb gets about half a page describing the history, taste, part of herb used, how to brew it, cautionary advice, vitamins, and there are nice, easy to reference side notes that give the health benefits. The pages have subtle green and blue hues that are pleasing to the eye., and the book is small enough to take with you to the store (about 8"x8" x 3/8".
Each tea recipe has a nice, modest monochromatic photo of the creator of that blend, and a page about her (or him). They don't go over board with the mini-biography. In fact, I would usually get annoyed, but it was not at all bothersome, and in fact, quite a nice, personal touch.You will also find some lovely photos and subtle artwork throughout the book. They in no way detract from the content and are pleasing to the eye.
There is also a nice table of taste characteristics. For example, under the category "sweet', there is a list including anise, licorice, stevia, vanilla, and rehmannia .Included are are 10 taste categories.
This is my first tea book and I doubt I will buy another. This one has everything I need. In fact, using the information presented, I look forward to creating my own special blends to give as gifts for my loved ones, and I am inspired to grow my own herbs to make it more affordable. There are 101 blends in this book, which is more than enough for anyone, but the added information enables one to create infinite personalized blends that work in harmony with your body and senses.

May be a bit daunting for herb "newbies" but don't be scared, you don't need to buy all the herbs mentioned in this book. Just pick one recipe at a time and start to experiment. A great way to learn!
