4 out of 5 stars P.G. Wodehouse Meets Sherlock Holmes.......2006-12-02

Death of a Cad is the second book in the Hamish Macbeth mystery series. M.C. Beaton has her tongue stuck firmly in her cheek as she creates a quasi-Wodehouse country-castle romp mixed up with a murder mystery. To make matters more fun, one of the leading characters, Henry Withering, is an acclaimed playwright based on his latest upper class drawing-room work.

Here's the set-up. Priscilla Hallburton-Smythe has taken up a job in London to be able to find eligible men. Henry Withering spots her and decides his publicity shots will look much better with her at his side. He quickly proposes and Priscilla accepts based on her desire to please Mommy and Daddy. On the way home to introduce him to family and friends, Priscilla begins to have her doubts about the wisdom of the match. Matters quickly degrade when an unpleasant dinner is followed the next morning by a death, an apparent accident. But Police Constable Hamish Macbeth, the pride of Lochdubh in the Scottish Highlands, is skeptical. Soon, his doubts turn into evidence of foul play. (And that's a pretty good pun for a hunting accident involving a grouse shoot -- even if the high and mighty have been complaining about the shortage of grouse . . . you could even say they've been grousing.)

There are three stories intertwined in the book:

1. The engagement
2. The murder mystery
3. Conflict between Hamish and his superiors

In typical country novel fashion, the engagement story is really the best. The humor is improved by being warm, broad and nonstop.

The intellectual content of the book is raised by the subtle ways that Macbeth tracks down the murderer while fending off his superiors.

The least interesting part of the book is the actual murder mystery.

But don't mind that, you'll have a lot of fun with this one.

If you like to listen to audio books, I suggest you also enjoy Davina Porter's deft reading of the tale. Ms. Porter's sense of timing is perfect . . . even if her accents struggle from time to time.

4 out of 5 stars The further adventures of Hamish Macbeth.......2005-06-01

This is the second book of the Hamish Macbeth series, picking up a few months after THE DEATH OF A GOSSIP.

The story opens as Priscilla Halburton-Smithe is driving her new fiance home to Lochdubh for a weekend houseparty at her parents' house. Tensions soon develop at the party, including the inclusion (or intrusion depending on your point of view) of local constable Macbeth into the group. Naturally there is soon a death to investigate, one that of course confuses all but our hero.

This is very much in the long tradition of cozy series mystery. The murder victim richly deserves his fate, the characters of those involved is more important than the action, and there is a large cast of recurring characters. Our hero manages to solve the crime while overcoming the incompetance of his superiors. There is even an ongoing romance.

If 'cozies' are your cup of tea you will definitely enjoy this series and will want to read them all.

4 out of 5 stars Another enjoyable mystery from M.C. Beaton.......2005-04-09

I'm new to the Hamish Macbeth series. I read Death of a Poison Pen (set later than this novel) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Poison Pen had a lot of charm and funny characters, something this series is known for.
Death of a Cad is not quite as good as that one. It starts out as more of a typical mystery with the usual rich, English suspects sitting around in a big house. But once Hamish gets into the act, it gets a lot better. If this is the first book in the series you read, you'll still enjoy it, but if your impression is lukewarm, don't stop with this book. Read Death of a Poison Pen and other books in the series. I think you'll be charmed by the humor and characterizations. I plan to read more of this series.

4 out of 5 stars Bring on More Hamish Macbeth........2003-07-21

M.C. Beaton's Hamish Macbeth series is wonderful! I think I even enjoy him more than Agatha Raisin. He's funny, charming and smart. In this book Hamish gets drawn into a murder that happens in the house of his ladylove, Priscilla. Priscilla comes back to Lochdubh from a job in London with a new fiance in tow. Hamish has to stay on the sidelines and watch his beloved with another man. He handles even this appalling situation with grace and humour. But then a death occurs and Hamish is sure it's murder. He sets out to find the killer, but before he does another murder happens. But, never fear, he does solve the murder in the end, and it was a surprise to me.

4 out of 5 stars Out of print? How curious; should be back........2001-04-12

First Beaton i've ever read. A good introduction; certainly i shall read some more of the Hamish Macbeth series. The characters are mostly well done, more especially those to the forefront of the picture ~ Macbeth, the local copper, Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, daughter of the local landowners, Henry, her fiancé, and Captain Peter Bartlett, the cad whose death causes the mystery. Oddly, i felt the level of writing was high all the way through, until the last half dozen pages, as Macbeth revealed the solution to the mystery. At that point, or perhaps as the murderer stopped denying it and suddenly gloated in the denoument, the quality fell precipitously. Still, six out of two hundred pages isn't a bad per centage of lower quality.

Written in the 1930s, lost in the 1950s, and finally published in 1990s, this is one of Fritz Leiber's more eclectic works. Part horror story and part science fiction whodunit, the tale begins as George Cramer arrives in Smithville, California, home of his college friends Daniel Kesserich and John Ellis. Ellis's wife has died under mysterious circumstances, and now both he and Kesserich have gone missing. The townspeople seem to be hiding a hideous secret, and Cramer suspects all the clues lead back to unusual experiments Kesserich was conducting. A gripping tale in the style of H. P. Lovecraft but told with the grace of Leiber.

            Book Description

Fritz Leiber was one of the most famous fantasy and SF writers of the century, the author of many classics, including the popular Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser fantasy series. In 1936, young Leiber, then in correspondence with the famous writer H.P. Lovecraft, drafted this eerie story. Now Tor is pleased to present in its first paperback publication this short novel of cosmic dread and Lovecraftian horror.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Leiber shines in this novella.......2007-08-29

Subtitled "A Study of the Mass-Insanity at Smithville," this novella tells the story of George Kramer, who, as the novel opens, is on his way to visit Daniel Kesserich, an old friend who lives in that small California town. His business there is unpleasant: he has come to attend the funeral of Mary Ellis, the wife of another old friend, John Ellis, who died after eating an orange treated with a particularly strong pesticide.

Immediately upon Kramer's arrival, strange things start to happen in Smithville. As he approaches Kesserich's house, a trail of pebbles materializes out of thin air. Intrigued, he follows the pebbles until they stop appearing some distance away. Confused, Kramer heads back to the house, just in time to witness it's total destruction in a tremendous explosion. Unable to locate either of his friends, Kramer decides to stay in town and investigate.

Soon thereafter, the townspeople are seized by the idea that Mary Ellis has been buried alive, prompting many of them to insist on an exhumation. Several take it upon themselves to dig up Mary's coffin, only to find it empty. Already fearful, the citizens are further panicked when a child recalls seeing John Ellis digging up his wife's grave, accompanied by a mysterious man in black. It is up to Kramer, the only person in town who has not succumbed to madness, to puzzle out the causes behind these macabre events.

Leiber's elegant prose, accompanied by the eerie cover art and interior illustrations of Jason Van Hollander, make this a welcome addition to any bookshelf. Tor should be commended for publishing this impressive novella, written in the mid-1930's but previously unpublished--new Leiber is always a cause for celebration. A grandmaster if there ever was one, Leiber continues to provide a sterling example to other writers, even from the grave.

4 out of 5 stars For the completists........2000-06-15

After receiving a letter from an old college friend, John Ellis, the writer George Kramer travels to a small Californian town out in the desert. Here he is confronted by strange happenings, the result of another of his old college friends, Daniel Kesserich, who has discovered, quite by accident, a way to use an energy anomaly of collapsing magnetic fields to move in the super-time of the fifth dimension, and thus the time of the fourth dimension. This activity normally has no consequences with regard to the surrounding town and its population. But when Kesserich uses his discovery to return John Ellis' wife from the dead, the result of a seemingly accidental poisoning, the town's population succumb to a general psychological trauma due to the temporal contradictions set in motion. There's a lot of good ideas in this little book, which before its recent publication have appeared in other Leiber titles, such as, Gonna Roll them Bones, and The Big Time. Daniel Kesserich is slightly lumpy to read, especially at the start where the narrative is not quite as smooth as is usual for a Fritz Leiber story, making it necessary to read the first chapter and the forward a couple of times to iron out any apparent oddities.

Overall that's the main complaint in an otherwise nicely presented book with its great black-and-white illustrations and text on quality paper. It's A Leiber all right, but suffers slightly from not having the benefit of his ultimate attention.

            Worth reading all the same.

            3 out of 5 stars A slow start and a WHAM-BAM! ending........1999-06-19

Two things I can say about this book:

            1. The story opens to a slow start. This certainly was a deliberate move on Leiber's part. He is working towards a sense of uneasiness, but to me it felt like his characters were moving underwater, slowly and clumsily. Yet, this is all nicely tied up in...

            2. The brilliant and exhilarating ending. The disjointed happenings of the previous chapters are all nicely wrapped up in this section of the book. Beside it, the rest of the book pales in comparison.

I was left with the sensation the book may be too long for the tale it tells. Leiber bursts in creativity and commanding (and maniacal) prose until the last chapter, making the rest of his book seem ungainly.

On a final note: Previously, the only other novel by Leiber I had read was "Conjure Wife". This one seemed to me a stronger and better effort, and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Lovecraft helps Leiber reach out from the dead.......1999-06-13

Fritz Leiber's The Dealings of Daniel Kesserich was recently published, years after Leiber's death. The book was originally written in 1936, apparently while Leiber still corresponded with Lovecraft, and it shows. It has all the elements that we've learned to love: the letter from an old friend living in a nameless, backwater town; the college mate with interest in more than three dimensions who lives in isolation from the community; the small something that appears to eating away at the town people's minds; the mysterious death - and this is only in the first five pages. The book is quite a good read and absolutely hard to put down, with some scenes that are pretty scary, specially when you realize that they involve only people behaving strangely. However, at some points it has a somewhat raw feel to it, may be because it was never edited. If you're looking for some Lovecraftian read and are tired of the recently published titles, this may be able to please you.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent novella from a Master of the genre.......1997-04-17

Fritz Leiber was considered one of the greatsof SF, Fantasy, and Horror and this long-lostshort novel demonstrates why. Something strange is happening in Smithville; more and more people are convinced that the woman who was buried a few days earlier was buried alive. What does this have to do with the mysterious experiments of the reclusive Daniel Kesserich?

                    Permanent Entropy
After an atomic blast hurled the world into an uncertain future, the past still reaches out in hope . . . and damnation. In a kill-or-die world, one steadfast group of survivors possesses superior fighting skills and sense of fair play that have made them living legends. In their struggle to seek a better way of life, they are unraveling the powerful secrets of the hell on earth called Deathlands.

                    Portal to Hell
A pre-dark legacy of shattering promise lies beneath the ruins of nuke-ravaged Seattle. Ryan Cawdor and his warrior companions come face-to-face with the ancestors of a secret society whose members were convinced that paradise awaited at the center of the earth. This cult is inexorably tied to a conspiracy of twentieth-century scientists devoted to fulfilling a vision of genetic manipulation. In this labyrithine ville, carved from the subterranean passages of a doomed past, some of the descendants of the Illuminated Ones are pursuing the dream of their legacy -- while others are dedicated to its nightmare.

Even in the Deathlands, twisted human beliefs endure . . .

4 out of 5 stars Series Shines On : Sunchild (Deathlands).......2003-12-19

This series is one of those guilty pleasures kind of things. Like a Steven Segal movie, one shouldn't take this series too seriously and just go with the flow. You know the good guys will win out at the end or it would be the end of the series and that just isn't going to happen. They will face evil men and women, mutant creatures and plants, in a world gone berserk due to the cataclysmic nuclear war raged between the nations sometime during 2001. (Yes, we all know that it is now almost 2004 but please ignore the point.) They will journey from place to place via a teleportation type device popping up in a military installation known as a Redoubt before venturing outside to explore. No matter how bad it looks outside or the lurking danger, the band of explorers will venture out, leaving the relative safety of the Redoubt, face down the danger, and return back to travel to the next place. The good guys always win and live to face danger another day.

As this novel opens, the group awakens to find themselves in yet another Redoubt in what was once the United States and is now known as the Death Lands thanks to the radiation effects. As they explore this Redoubt, which has major appearance differences from the normal Redoubts, they learn that the air system powered by the always present small nuclear generator is failing. This Redoubt also appears to be buried deeper underground than normal which makes their ascent to the surface more precarious, thanks to the diminishing air and land shifts due to earthquakes which have collapsed some of the emergency escape tunnels.

Once at the surface, they step out into a lush world somewhere in a mountain setting. The plants have mutated tremendously surviving the frequent acid rains due to the chem. clouds that still circle the planet. The companions begin to wonder if this is a lead to the land that they have heard of somewhere far to the north where mankind is attempting to rebuild civilization. The place is said to be run by the Illuminated Ones who foretold of the planet wide destruction and of a sanctuary open to those could make it there.

It soon appears that not only is this not a lead to the mythical place, but they have unwittingly walked into an escalating war between two rival villages in the outskirts of what once was Seattle. One group is led by the Sunchild and consists of a splinter group from the original Redoubt that has become horribly mutated due to inbreeding and their above ground exposure to the elements. Another group, living in underground tunnels of Seattle and calling their village Raw appear normal. They are also descendent survivors of the original Redoubt group. While they appear normal to the eye, they hide a deeper and more chilling sickness and evil.

The group, led by the always unflappable Ryan Cawdor, find themselves in the center of the coming battle. Not only do they want to stay alive but they want to find out if anyone knows of the Promised Land that maybe nothing more than a fantasy. And while they try to stay out of folks business, some things are so inherently evil, they have to involve themselves and put a stop to it.

This series will never be confused with deep intellectual reading or working on themes at several levels. This is sheer escapist reading--perfect for those days by the pool or waiting for the inevitable delayed doctor's appointment. And if you miss a book in the series, the next one always gives a very quick recap so the reader has some idea what happened.

3 out of 5 stars James Axler is rolling in his grave.......2002-01-21

I give up, while the first 30 books were great they have slipped in recent years. I think I first noticed the decline at "Freedom Lost" and even then it was bearable. But now its just a rehash. Ryan and Co. come out of the gateway fight a battle, go to the vile, Dean gets caught in a rockslide or is attacked by a mutie fish. Oh yeah, and along the way they make a friend(who has the unsighly habit was being killed just before the book ends). Read Outlanders, therein lies a glimmer of hope.

                    2 out of 5 stars A flat-liner of a book.......2001-12-19

It's been at least a couple of years since I read a Deathlands novel. I stopped buying them because they seemed so dumbed-down, particularly compared to the Outlanders series. I figured that to be fair, I ought to give DL another look and see if it had improved.

It saddens me to say that judging by "Sunchild" not only has DL not improved since the last book I read, if anything it's pretty much a flat-line as far as action, characterization, drama and simple energy is concerned. It's standard issue from start to finish. What makes it worse is how the writer introduces a couple of halfway interesting concepts and then proceeds to do absolutely NOTHING with them.

It's almost like the writer suddenly realized that to actually explore the sci-fi concepts he came up with would mean forcing his audience to think a little bit, so he decided to drop the whole bit about genetic engineering and the lost land of Erewhon.Or did he just lose interest?

As far as the main characters are concerned...well, I tend to agree that the writer got most of them right but only because he stuck to their most superficial traits. Krysty and Mildred contributed so little to the entire novel that if all their scenes were seperated, they might take up a couple of pages. Only Dean seemed to show a personality other than the usual laundry list of hokey "Holy Flypaper, Batman!" type of catch-phrases.

I'm sorry to say this, since DL was my favorite series as a teenager but I think it's time to put this collection of 80s cliches out to pasture once and for all... or find somebody to write it who actually cares about it.

3 out of 5 stars SUNCHILD SHINES SOMEWHAT.......2001-12-18

In this latest installment of the saga of Deathlands, Ryan Cawdor and his wayward survivors jump back to what was once Seattle. This was the place that Ryan and J.B. had found their long-lost leader of the war wags - the Trader. He is only mentioned but does not come out of the woodwork so to speak. Its a shame really, because having the Trader come back would be a great addition to the storyline.
Anyway, The group find that this section of Seattle is being fought over by two groups: normal humans that live underground and a large group of muties led by the one called - Sunchild. Now this is one of the most bizarre mutated people that this series has made up for awhile and its a shame that that part of the story isn't delved into deeper. Ryan and the survivors are captured by the norms and taken underground to their hidden base. Here they find that the baron is a nice man for once, but his wife is not, she is plotting against her husband along with the sec chief. The wife has more than a hidden agenda up her sleeve, and this also makes this a more interesting story, but again falls short. The norms employ Ryan and the group to help them wipe the scrouge of the muties once and for all, but to their dismay, they find that the muties have an old nuclear bomb in their camp. Now this complicates matters some, plus there is infighting among Ryan's group and the mean norms, the head sec chief gives Ryan enough grief that I was waiting for Ryan to lop-off his head at any moment, but unlike Ryan of old, he does nothing to my consternation. The weak part of the story is the action as the norms storm the muties camp a couple of times. The action sequences are flat and not as well done as they usually are. The storyline had threads of great ideas but was narrowed and never seemed to expand. Come on writers, take this series to the next level - its high time to do this - dont hold back on us readers!

3 out of 5 stars SUNCHILD SHINES SOMEWHAT.......2001-12-09

In the new saga of the Deathlands titled SUNCHILD, Ryan Cawdor and his band of wayfarers jump to what was once Seattle, the place where they once found the legendary Trader. Now don't get your hopes up you diehard Deathlands fans, the Trader is not there but only mentioned, but what is there is a couple of communities divided and warring against one another due to one being normal humans, and the other being some of the strangest muties yet to date in this series. The first part of this particular adventure is the best part of the entire book. The set-up of the adventurers being captured by the norms and the introduction and detail of how these muties look were the strong points of the story, after that the story kind of went back and forth between going to the muties camp and fighting and then going back to the norms place and skulking about the warrens of their underground base, looking for something fishy. There are some very strong points and ideas in this story, and even some very interesting bad guys (and gals). But the action sequences were kind of dull and not very well executed. The good thing about the main characters were that the writer kept them "in character" for the most part, especially Jak. The power struggle going on inside the norms base was a plus, the barons wife plotting against him was a good twist and she was an interesting character, but the writer did not use her to her full potential. Ryan Cawdor was a little too tolerant to the sec boss who was constantly giving him grief the entire book, I could not wait for Ryan to take this guy out - and that also was very disappointing. The colorful muties were not expounded upon as well, this would have greatly enhanced the storyline if the head mutie named SUNCHILD by the way, would have been explored more. If you are going to name the title after a character, especially a mutie, dont you think you should make them pretty much the center of attention instead of a by-product of the storyline? Another strong point of the storyline comes along when the norms find out that the muties have an old atomic bomb on their property, now this doesn't happen everyday! I love storylines that incorporate the weapon of mass destruction that ruined your world come face to face with the characters, but it takes a superlative writer to think and invent a fun and enjoyable read out of this - what will the fans say to this one? DEATHLANDS is too great of a series and idea not to explore further, when will this book take the nex step in doing so?

Bought this book, lots of interesting recipes to try out however, I have a big headache because of the conversions from metric to imperial measurements. lol

3 out of 5 stars It's Greek (or New Zealand) to me.......2006-05-19

Not to say this isn't a fine book. What I wish I'd realized is that it's from New Zealand. I am in the United States. Some measurements are metric. Some aren't. Many measurements are by weight, so have a kitchen scale handy. Temps are celsius. I'll have to do many conversions. Other problems: many things have different names than we use here, so I have to translate to figure out what they are. Also, some things are not foods available here, as far as I know, like quark. What is that?

Cookbooks are better if they are from your region, in terms of measurement and temperature systems -- and available ingredients. Some of the cakes sound bizarre to me for that reason, but there are lots of interesting-sounding items to try!
