"In Quebec, winters can be slow for the forensic anthropologist. The temperature rarely rises above freezing. The rivers and lakes ice over, the ground turns rock hard, and snow buries everything. Bugs disappear, and many scavengers go underground. The result: Corpses do not putrefy in the great outdoors. Floaters are not pulled from the St. Lawrence... and some of last season's dead are not found until the spring melt."

Readers of Kathy Reichs's cool and clever first forensic thriller Déjà Dead will recognize the ironic voice of Tempe (short for Temperance) Brennan, the North Carolina-born scientist who winds up working at the Laboratoire de Médicine Légale in Montreal. Here she bristles at the conservative attitudes of some of her Canadian colleagues.

Despite the cold weather, Tempe's workload quickly becomes heavy: the bones of a long-dead nun now up for sainthood have been moved and tampered with; a deadly house fire turns out to be arson; and a university teaching assistant disappears after joining a cult. Tempe must figure out where (and why) all the bodies are buried in the hard Canadian ground. Her investigations take her home to North Carolina, and to a strange colony living on an offshore island.

Unlike certain other writers who specialize in forensic pathology, Reichs doesn't revel in the horror of death or rub our noses in gore: she uses the science of death to reveal rather than to shock or startle. It definitely makes for easier reading--especially at mealtimes. --Dick Adler

Book Description

Forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs exploded onto bestseller lists worldwide with her phenomenal debut novel Déjà Dead -- and introduced "[a] brilliant heroine" (Glamour) in league with Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta. Dr. Temperance Brennan, Quebec's director of forensic anthropology, now returns in a thrilling new investigation into the secrets of the dead.

In the bitter cold of a Montreal winter, Tempe Brennan is digging for a corpse buried more than a century ago. Although Tempe thrives on such enigmas from the past, it's a chain of contemporary deaths and disappearances that has seized her attention -- and she alone is ideally placed to make a chilling connection among the seemingly unrelated events. At the crime scene, at the morgue, and in the lab, Tempe probes a mystery that sweeps from a deadly Quebec fire to startling discoveries in the Carolinas, and culminates in Montreal with a terrifying showdown -- a nerve-shattering test of both her forensic expertise and her skills for survival.

Download Description

Dr. Temperance Brennan, forensic anthropologist for Quebec, digs for a corpse where Sister Elizabeth Nicolet, dead for over a century and now a candidate for sainthood, should be lying in her grave. The puzzle surrounding Sister Nicolet's life and death provides a welcome contrast to discoveries at a burning chalet, where scorched bodies are found.

Like all of her other "Bones" novels, this one is another page turner. These books are hard to put down.

4 out of 5 stars Another day, another death..........2007-08-22

In Death Du Jour, the second Temperance Brennan mystery, Kathy Reichs proves that she's not just a flash in the pan.

Forensic anthropologist, Temperance Brennan, splits her time between Montreal and Charlotte, North Carolina, working with law enforcement and teaching. She's in Montreal when a gruesome discovery is made--three bodies are discovered after an arson fire. But it appears that the victims may have been dead before the fire was set. At the same time, she is helping the Roman Catholic Church identify the bones of a nun who is being proposed for sainthood. In doing some research for the church, she stumbles upon some information that provides clues to the arson. Before assembling all the puzzle pieces, Brennan (with the help of Detective Andrew Ryan) will go from Montreal to Charlotte to Beaufort, South Carolina and back to Montreal.

Reichs provides her readers with an education they won't receive from other authors. In Death Du Jour, she goes into great detail about how the many insects found on a body can be analyzed to discover the time of death. She also gives us a mini-lesson on cults including types, a history of cults, cult leaders, and those who would be attracted to cults.

Reichs' books follow along with Brennan's personal life, and we're introduced to Peter (the husband she's separated from) and her sister, Harry. We also witness the growing attraction between Brennan and the handsome Ryan. Although you don't have to read these books in order, it does help with continuity.

I'm not much of a television watcher, but I may just have to catch Bones, the series that is based on the character of Temperance Brennan.

This book was written much better than her first. When you get towards the middle of the story it was hard to put down.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book!.......2007-01-10

Death du Jour lives up to its name and Kathy Reichs lives up to our expectations. This was a great Forensic book and was one of those "I Can't put it down" books. I really enjoy reading these books and think that anyone who has liked Patricia Cornwell will love these by Kathy Reichs.

3 out of 5 stars Death Du Jour: It's Always Something.......2006-12-11

"Death Du Jour," the second book in Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan forensic mystery series is set, as are most of her others, in Montreal and North Carolina. In this regard, fictional character follows creator, as both are also employed in both places. This book finds Brennan (and Reichs) expecting Montreal's winter to be slow in their trade, as everything's frozen over and under: but this will be the winter that proves unusual.

The book opens with Tempe digging up a frozen old church near Quebec, looking for the bones of an obscure nun to whom the Church is considering granting sainthood. The bones are not where they should be. Regular readers may have noticed, it's always something with Tempe's digs. Either there are bones where they shouldn't be, or none where they should be. Or bones that are too new in an old burial site, or bones that are too old in a new burial or disaster site. At any rate, Tempe does find the bones, and, in a feat of forensics that I found fascinating, succeeds in establishing the identity of the nun's bones, and explaining the considerable mystery that still clings to them.

There's also a subplot involving an arson, and another involving the sudden disappearance of a student from Montreal's well-known Mc Gill University. The latter somehow brings Tempe to the warm, welcoming beaches of North Carolina's Outer Banks, and even to a hotel at which I stayed several times. Fantastique!! But here I get unhappy. In this book's denouement, Reichs, like another female forensic author, whom I will not name, simply points to the mysterious cult and says: they did it. Authors, please understand: such an ending may reflect real life. But readers of mysteries do not invest the time and the money to buy and read books in order to be told: they did it. For our investment, we expect an actual murderer to be named.

3 out of 5 stars Historical mystery set in Paris.......2007-09-20

Fanny Delarue is a young cook for a wealthy family in Paris in 1790. Her mother gives her a Spice Box. She treasures it.

There is a lot of political unrest at this time. Then a neighboring chef, Etienne de la Porte, is found dead under suspicious circumstances. She and her head chef, and lover, Henri, had been taking classes from Etienne. He was also Henri's mentor. Soon after Fanny and Henri's boss leaves the area and dismantles his house and lets all the servants go.

Henri and Fanny end up staying at the master's house because Henri has been injured in the unrest. Then Henri disappears. Fanny searches for him and finds herself in some dangerous situations.

Can Fanny find Henri and Etienne's killer? Are they the same person? Can she stay safe while investigating?

This is the second in the Spice Box series. I liked Fanny and Henri. Even though historical mysteries are often hard for me to get into, I don't find that with this series. The author writes in such a way that I almost forget it's a historical mystery. I just get into the mystery. I found this time period to be very interesting. Not something I knew a lot about. I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars exciting historical mystery.......2006-03-08

It is not easy living in Paris in the summer of 1790. The Bastille has been torn down over a year ago, the king and queen were forced to move from Versailles to Paris and the revolutionaries are whipping up the general populace to a patriotic fury. Fanny Delarue lives as an assistant chef to Monsieur Monnard, a wealth bourgeois who works with merchants and nobles in designing and building their homes. The chef to the Monnard family is Henri, Fanny's lover. Her parents give her a spice box as a present and she loves it because of its usefulness and because it was presented with love.

Fanny is perturbed that she sees the same man nearby over a short period of time. She is disconcerted when he speaks to her, calling out to her by name as if he knows her. Violence comes to the housing complex where Fanny lives, when Chef Etienne who used to work at Versailles is murdered. Shortly thereafter, a mob tries to get into Fanny's home and the master of the house flees for England before the violence escalates. M. Desjadins, the English equivalent of a butler is murdered and Henri persuades Fanny to bury him without telling anyone. When Henri disappears, she is kidnapped and told his life is in her hands. She wonders if the contents of the spice box is linked to the violence and murders, and plans to find out.

France on the eve of the Revolution is vividly portrayed in this exciting historical mystery. The violence is just beginning and readers learn first hand how the citizenry cope in such a volatile political climate. Although not yet out of her teens the heroine is a mature woman who knows what she wants and goes after it. Lou Jane Temple has written a mystery that takes several unexpected twists that leaves reader shocked. This is a most enjoyable who-done-it and why.

Don't be deceived by the silly romance cover. This is a good sf/fantasy novel. McDonald has fun parodying Victorian and cyberpunk fiction in this story tracing three generations of Irish women's interaction with the "mygmus" (mythoconsciousness).

                  5 out of 5 stars Just my imagination...once again.......2006-08-03

Katherine Kurtz calls McDonald 'a poet masquerading as a novelist'. She's right. McDonald has essentially written 2 novellas and a novel. Each is very different in terms of sense of time, and even place, although Ireland is the locale of all three tales. Inteconnected, yes; still, each stands well on its own.
'Craigdarragh' is an Irish manor estate at the cusp of World War 1, specifically 1913. Chiefly through diary entries, we meet Emily Desmond and her parents, Edward and Caroline. Emily, at 13, is a very imaginative girl on the verge of sexual awareness. Edward is an eccentic astronomer, confounde by his daughter, who risks family name and fortune to communicate with what he believes to be alien visitors fom the stars. Caroline is a respected poet with more than a slight acquaintance with her daughter's interest in the Otherworld.
Emily's explorations of Bridestone Wood, and its repercussions, form one story line. Edward's obsessin with alien visitors marks the second. Along the way we are introduced to a blind musician and his female companion, a dancer. There is Dr. Hannibal Rooke, a paranormal investigator. Finally, the poet William Butler Yeats. The musician, the dancer and the doctor will visit in the other tales.
'The Mythlines'- Jessica Caldwell is one of three sisters in Ireland during the 1930s. An artist, she has big dreams at 17 and 3/4. She also has an attitude problem. Tiresias and Gonzaga, a pair of 'itinerant journeymen,' are trying to find her, for Jessica is beginning to see the mythlines, borders between our world and Faery. She is seeing Dr. Rooke, who has an interest in helping Jessica confront her past. Then, there's Damian, her new boyfriend. member of the I.R.A.
'Shekinah' introduces us to Enye MacColl, a twenty-something in advertisement by day. By night she battles the phaguses of the Otherland, using Japanese swordfighting techniques. Enye, too, sees the mythlines; as a child she invented a complete world in her grandmother's garden.
Along the way, we meet Jaypee, Saul, Elliot, Mr. Antrobus, and the Midnight Children. All play an important part in Enye MacColl's journey.
Three women of Ireland. Each forced to confront great tragedy. Ian McDonald does an excellent job at telling their stories.
'In its contemporary form, the pookah has been demythologised by the centuries into another member of the pantheon of fairies major and minor- a rural Puck figure, generally good-natured, if prone to ocassional acts of minor domestic mischief. In its ancient manifestations, the pookah has been terrible and dangerous, the spirit of the forest itself, with its roots in the racial memory of the woolly mammoth of the periglacial fringelands, hunting with tusk and claw and sinew the sights of the Mesolithic settlers.'

King of Morning, Queen of Day is tracking the lives of three generations of women born to the ability to see and manipulate human mythoconsciousness. From the age of Yeats to a period not far past modern day, we travel with the women as they discover their powers and face the parallel world opened by their perceptions. Each has a unique take on what they are dealing with and each finds her own rite of passage, encountering those that help and those that hinder along the way. Characters are vividly described and the plotting becomes tighter and more accomplished as the novel progresses, with the last, science-fiction third standing out as most original and unusual.

5 out of 5 stars A fairy tale of unforgettable power.......2005-06-03

I knew, just by reading the back cover blurb, that this book was right up my alley. Women with mystical powers? Check. Faeries? Check. Ireland? Check. In fact, I think the only reason I didn't discover this book earlier is that it was published in 1991, and I only started reading fantasy sometime in the late nineties.

The story begins with Emily, a bratty but endearing girl of fifteen, poised on the edge of adulthood in the early 20th century. Emily knows she is special, set apart-and when she sees the faeries in the wood by her family's home, she knows she will never be satisfied with ordinary life. Emily makes a colossal mess of things, as bratty fifteen-year-olds will do, and sets in motion events that will affect generations to come.

What follows is a fairy tale, but not precisely a tale of faeries; it's more of an exploration of the nature of reality and of myth, as seen through the eyes of Emily and two other women: Jessica, a glib-tongued teenager of the 1930s whose tall tales have an uncanny way of coming true; and Enye, a woman of the late 1980s, torn between everyday life and a battle with supernatural forces from the world beyond.

This is a stunning story and one that I'll probably reread over and over again. It doesn't suffer one bit from the ailment that afflicts so many multigenerational novels-the tendency for one or more of the intertwined stories to lack luster. All three of the women, and their lives and times, are vivid and passionate. And I must say, there are few male authors who can write such nuanced and three-dimensional female characters. Get your hands on a used copy of this. I wish they'd reprint it...

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book.......2002-12-15

I first read this novel about ten years ago, and reread it faithfully every year. It's a lyrical exploration of the lives of three generations of Irish women entangled by a supernatural force that they don't understand but can't escape. Haunting and riveting, it remains in my thoughts even today.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Ever Read!!! This book so good it should be priceless.......2006-03-16

You may say, "Why do I want to read a book with a title about searching for a snout?" Well you're wrong. This book is about a kid named Rod Allbright. He went on a journey in space with some aliens! Can you believe it? Aliens! They had gone a mission. Now that the mission is over, Rod Allbright is about to go home.
His mom and his twin little brother and sister is overjoyed when they see him, but there is terrible news. Snout, who is an alien friend of Rod Allbright, is missing! Now Rod has to go back to space and find Snout. When I first read the book I thought it was boring, but it's the greatest book I had ever read. It stays interesting from beginning to end.
This book has inspired me to make my own book and become an author. It showed me I can be a writer about anything I would like to write about. This showed when I was interested in the book and when I couldn't stop reading. When you cant stop reading, then you know it's a good book! Creativity is what makes a book good.
The author puts a lot of dialogue so it makes the book more interesting. I tell you this because we are born with creativity, and when reading this book you can picture yourself in the story. This book is for everyone but mostly for middle school students such as myself. This is also for people who like adventure, space, and aliens. In the book there were many worlds I never knew would be so amazing.
The theme is how much family is, and how two things can be a family. Either if you're from a different planet or world, you treat them as a family. You protect and care for one another. Family love, care, responsibilities, and life is priceless. There may be hard times, but there's a family who helps through it. Like Snout and Rod Allbright... there not family but they treat each other like it, also the other aliens.
My rating for the book is an A+ + +. This book was the first one I fell in love with. When I was reading it I couldn't put it down. I also told my friends to read it, and they loved it as much as I did. It just goes to show, "Don't judge a book by its title." So go to your local library or bookstore and check it out. I love it and I bet you will too.

                      - C.M.

Search no longer for a good book to read. Having never been to space The Search for Snout, by Bruce Coville, makes me feel like I am in a spaceship in space. Rod Allbright, a kid that met aliens in the first book Aliens Ate My Homework, searches for his alien friend snout. Along with Captain Grakker, Tar Gibbons, Phil, and Madame Pong, search for snout with Rod AllBright. The reason I liked this book was because of Rod Allbright. He was the main character and he probably had the most adventures in the series. The villain BKR tried to steal Rod Allbrights brain to make a huge bomb to destroy the universe. If you want to see if BKR's plan is successful and a surprising secret read the book The Search for Snout. This is a must read book.

                      5 out of 5 stars I LOVED IT!.......2001-03-19

Bruce Coville writes wonderful books that can captivate any audiance, no matter the age. I was so glad when this came out, I'd been waiting to find out what happened to Rod and all of my other favorite characters. Though Grakker, the Tar, and Phil, and Rod's father aren't prominant in the book, its still a great ending. (Or is it? If Bruce keeps writting them, I'll keep reading them!!)

I really really love this book. I noticed that the people who wrote some of the reveiws wanted to know when the next book in the series would come out. It has! The title is Aliens Stole My Body. Go check it out!

Steven Raichlen brings the best of his culinary world to Healthy Latin Cooking: he absolutely loves Latin flavors, from Mexico to Argentina, from Cuba to Puerto Rico, and he is dedicated to a healthy diet that's low in fat yet high in flavor. (His High-Flavor, Low-Fat Cooking series is a must, as is his Miami Spice.)

Raichlen doesn't just drop the unwary cook into chapters of recipes that have been altered to reduce fat and salt and all the other nastiness. He begins with all the reasons for doing just that, and the many ways in which the true Latin diet is perfectly suited to a healthy pyramid approach. Nor does he shy away from truth, beauty, and justice, stating categorically that there are some dishes where lard just can't be left out of the flavor profile. He goes on, however, to show the reader how to cut way back on the total amount of lard used while retaining its great flavor.

Chapters are divided by kinds of food--appetizers, soups, salads, beans, and rice--not by place of origin. So it's kind of a Latin adventure to flip through this book, never knowing where you are going to land. There are Little Pots of Red Beans with Sour Cream from Nicaragua (140 calories per serving), Chicken and Vegetable Stew from Colombia (374 calories), Tamales from Mexico and from Cuba (163 versus 120 calories), Seafood Stew from Brazil (345 calories), Stuffed Pot Roast from Puerto Rico (533 calories), and flan from everywhere (423 calories). Steven Raichlen gives the reader a great way to spice up a diet, and a great diet to help life last a long, pleasurable time. --Schuyler Ingle

This book is packed with a wide variety of recipes each tastier than the last. They're not all that difficult to pull off either. The book really captures that spiced flavor that I love, and now i dont have to go out to a restaurant to get it. If you're looking for a great recipe book, this will do, but if you want something with pizazz, then this is the choice for you.

This book has traditional recipes from every country in Latin America. Each recipe explains the techniques used to reduce the fat and calories while retaining the flavor and texture. Nutritional data is provided for each recipe. To make crisp empanadas without deep-fat frying, he "bake-fries" the meat pies in the oven with only a small amount of oil. His healthy guacamole replaces some of the high-fat avocado with tomatillos. To make a healthier flan, he uses lower-fat dairy products. There are incredibly satisfying recipes like Mexican Hot Chocolate, Huevos Rancheros, Roast Pork, Beef Fajitas, Roasted Spiced Chicken, and Nicaraguan Tres Leches Cake. This is a great book to combine the fantastic flavors of traditional Latin food with contemporary methods for healthy, convenient cooking.
