Meet Dexter Morgan. He's a highly respected lab technician specializing in blood spatter for the Miami Dade Police Department. He's a handsome, though reluctant, ladies' man. He's polite, says all the right things, and rarely calls attention to himself. He's also a sociopathic serial killer whose "Dark Passenger" drives him to commit the occasional dismemberment.
Mind you, Dexter's the good guy in this story.
Adopted at the age of four after an unnamed tragedy left him orphaned, Dexter's learned, with help from his pragmatic policeman father, to channel his "gift," killing only those who deal in death themselves. But when a new serial killer starts working in Miami, staging elaborately grisly scenes that are, to Dexter, an obvious attempt at communication from one monster to another, the eponymous protagonist finds himself at a loss. Should he help his policewoman sister Deborah earn a promotion to the Homicide desk by finding the fiend? Or should he locate this new killer himself, so he can express his admiration for the other's "art?" Or is it possible that psycho Dexter himself, admittedly not the most balanced of fellows, is finally going completely insane and committing these messy crimes himself?
Despite his penchant for vivisection, it's hard not to like Dexter as his coldly logical personality struggles to emulate emotions he doesn't feel and to keep up his appearance as a caring, unremarkable human being. Breakout author Jeff Lindsay's plot is tense and absorbing, but it's the voice of Dexter and his reactions to the other characters that will keep readers glued to Darkly Dreaming Dexter, as well as making it one of the most original and highly recommended serial killer stories in a long time. --Benjamin Reese

Excellent quick read!.......2007-10-04
Love Jeff Lindsay! He's my new favorite...used to be David Wiltse & Thomas Harris...no more! (But try David Wiltse if you haven't - I recommend starting with Close to the Bone) :) "Dexter" books are a very quick read, but that's okay...with this being a new show on Showtime I'm sure he's gonna be cranking these out @ warp speed, but the quality will not suffer, no doubt. Like Wiltse, he's one of those authors that grab you with the first paragraph and you can't put it down until your finished! AAAAA+++++ Catch DEXTER on Showtime if you haven't already!
Darkly Dreaming Dexter.......2007-10-01
The book arrived in perfect condition in a timely manner, but just wasn't for me. It was interesting but I was expecting something a little different. However, if you like dry, macabre humor, this is the book for you!
A good friend without human feelings.......2007-09-24
Dexter is a sympathetic character who happens not to have normal human feelings. Moreover, he harbors the Dark Passenger deep in his psyche, and his other persona is a viciouse, libidinal killer. Despite all of this, Dexter is an engaging and interesting person who you will want to get to know.. as long as he's only in a book. Excellent writing, humorous and dark.
DEXTER IS DELIRIOUSLY DELIGHTFUL!.......2007-09-23
Darkly Dreaming Dexter is the first in the Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay. The series is a firsthand account of America's first "likable" serial killer. Dexter only kills bad people...and his point of view is so original that it's impossible to not have a fun read.
The story focuses around the mysterious Ice Truck Killer who kills people by disassembling them piece-by-piece. At the same time he's engaged Dexter in a clever game of serial-killing one-ups-manship. Will Dexter save the day before someone close to him dies...by his own hand?
The Dexter character has also translated well to the Showtime series which is a great example of black comedy done to perfection. The novel and the series do share many similarities and some important differences (character deaths, unexplored plotlines). Thus you can read Dexter and watch Dexter and still get the maximum amount of entertainment value. This is a great character who hopefully will have a very long shelf life.
The saga continues, but not as good as the first one........2007-09-21
This sequel to Dearly Devoted Dexter has the witty voice of Dexter, but the plot is not as riveting as the first book. Still, it's a wonderful read.

A Serial Hero.......2007-08-26
A twisted soul, a childhood witness to a yet unspoken tragedy. Dexter's step father, a Miami beat cop with astute character perception recognizes something isn't quite right with the new addition to his family. Something he's seen many, many times before on the job.
But father knows best, grooming Dexter in the ways and means to satisfy his hunger- but only on those that deserve it. And methods to avoid detection, avoiding capture, to continue doing his good works.
Dexter works for the Miami Police, in the crime lab. In the entire department of detectives, only one has even a hint of what lies beneath the surface of the quiet lab tech.
Brilliant plot, appropriately dark, and full of twisted humor as well- if you can find a copy, grab it. Very worthwhile and entertaining. But some of the events and imagary are definietly not for the squeamish.

A Hoot.......2007-08-06
This one really is a lot of fun and highly entertaining. Booklist called it "Monty Python let loose in Tolkein's World" but its even more fun than that. Not too much can be said about the story line that would make a lot of sense...you have to read it to get the full effect... but I'll give it a try.
Greyboar is a professional strangler at the top of his game. He is universally recognized as the best in the business. He is what you would expect with such a character: big, brawny, strong, mayhem personified. He is also surprising in that he loves philosophy.
On one of his assignments, he is commissioned to strangle the ruler of a foreign land. While doing so, he becomes enamored with that ruler's philosophical system. It doesn't save the ruler but it does change the strangler's life as he tires to come to grips with his new perception of reality. The result is amusing to everyone except the strangler's business agent. No one is more horrified than he when they lose their standing at the top of the rich assassin's guild and wind up in the impoverished hero's guild.
It's lots of fun and makes for a pleasant afternoon.
Me next Mr. Strangler .......2007-02-18
I struggled to even give this howling dog one star, but upon reflection I realized the ink hadn't stained my fingers. So there you go. It has been said that one must give the devil his due and when he came looking for it I told him I was a little short on due at the moment, but you can have my copy of this book. He said "I can take a hint mister." With that he zipped up his jacket, crammed his hat on his head and left the premises. Wait, said I, " You forgot your book".
..only because there is no zero star rating.......2006-10-05
Shamelessly derivative of Terry Pratchett's Diskworld series, difffering primarily in the fact that it is free of plot, interest, or humor, if you define humor as being funny. I read over two thirds of the book before I realized there was nothing there. Thanks for wasting eleven hours of my life. As our illustrious commander in chief said, "fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, won't get fooled again."
A lot of fun, and a happy ending too!.......2006-03-13
_The Philosophical Strangler_ is a look at the criminal life from the perspective of a strangler's agent who is just trying to get by in the world. Greyboar is the strangler and Ignace is his longtime friend and agent.
Ignace, being the greedy & practical type, looks at strangling as an occupation where the work's steady, the pay's good, and what more can a person ask for in life. As the wise man says, "Greater greed is the greedy man's gratuity." That, and the other sayings of the wise man such as the realistic "It's all nuts anyway," the insighful "I hate to be the one to break the news to you, General, but you're a foot soldier," the prescient "Never try to think of the worst thing that could happen. It's bound to be worse than that anyway" and the wise admonition "Don't ask. Just don't", are about as far into philosophy as Ignace is willing to venture.
Greyboar is a bit more philosophical, and while he is on his way to becoming the greatest strangler alive -- enough so that Jane's The World's Perps states "Our AAA rating may well be obsolete, as by all accounts the chokester known as 'The Thumbs of Eternity' perhaps requires his own AAAA rating." -- he is also heavily involved in a search for the philosophical meaning to life. Aside from the strangling, he views most of his work as being a classic application of Occam's razor, and he is committed to studying ethical entropy, following the path of Languor, Torpor & Stupor.
However, Ignace & Greyboar keep getting mixed up with a strange array of very philosophical individuals, such as Cat, short for Schrodinger's Cat, who is never where you expect her to be but who will go almost anywhere if there is a chance to find (& kill) Schrodinger; Gwendolyn, Greyboar's sister who hasn't been seen for years, but who is heavily involved in the dwarf issue and is one of the prime organizers of the dwarf underground railroad; Hrundig, an Alsask barbarian who's actually quite a bit smarter than he looks; Benvenuti, an artist & all around master-of-everything-with-the-looks-of-a-Greek-god; Abbess Hildegaard, who has been carrying on an increasingly heated discussion with the Old Geister, God himself, via the post; and Zulkeh the sorcerer who is a pedant's pedant.
Because of this damned philosophy, Ignace & Greyboar get increasingly involved in the Joe business, the dwarf underground railroad, affairs of the church (including close brushes with the Goatmonk and Cardinal Fornacaese), and having to rescue Benvenuti from Even Worse Hands in the Place Even Worse Than Hell.
At the end of the day Ignace finds true love, Greyboar redeems himself in the eyes of his sister Gwendolyn, and everything turns out pretty well. But had he been given his choice at the beginning of the story, Ignace would probably have preferred to stay in New Sfinctr, having ale with Greyboar at The Trough.
I really liked the book. The sayings of the wise man are almost worth a book in themselves. The great poses that Ignace classifies along the way ("Ogre in Repose, Regretting His Fangs & Talons," and "Still Life with Amour Propre, Injured") inspired a chuckle more than once, and Zulkeh's speeches are works of art in stupefying the audience.
Not funny.......2005-09-14
"Early Terry Pratchett", "Brilliant satire" and "word play never seen since Harry Turtledove".
Well, I'm here to tell you folks that "The Philosophical Strangler" is flat out horrible.
Eric Flint isn't the heir to anything even close to Terry Pratchett and as to word play, Harry Turtledove doesn't have a lot to worry about either. This is the first book I've read by Eric Flint and I don't think I'll be pursuing any of his other books anytime in the near future. If somebody wants to give me one, maybe, but I won't be all that enthusiastic about it.
The story is set in an alternate fantasy reality involving a professional assassin who chokes his victims to death and his "agent". That's the plot - pretty simple.
I managed to plow through about half of the book before I gave up. The "word play" so beloved by the reviewers is virtually unreadable. It's like hearing the same joke over and over and over again - eventually you can predict what the next joke will be because they are all the same - only the words are different.
With respect to the "humor" it's forced and in a bizarro kind of way - a word change here or a change in phrase there would have made it truly funny instead of sort-of funny.
Eric Flint is trying to be very clever and he falls flat on his face. He's clearly not a gifted enough writer nor clever enough to pull off this type of multifaceted satire. He should be ashamed he took money to publish this tripe. Baen, who normally publishes decent fantasy and scifi, should be forced to refund the purchase price for selling this to the general public.

Americans love Thai food. Among the best cookbooks exploring this rich, tantalizing cuisine is chef-restaurateur Su-Mei Yu's Cracking the Coconut. Insisting that there can be no true Thai cooking without homemade "core" preparations (such as various chili pastes), Yu includes precise, accessible recipes for these and other essential ingredients while outlining fundamental techniques in vivid detail. Readers learn the proper hand motions for cracking a coconut, how to wrap ingredients in banana leaves, and how to work a mortar and pestle, the central Thai-kitchen implement. The book's 175 recipes are divided between chapters devoted to essential ingredients or dishes. The chapter on Thai curry ("the signature dish") explores the basics of preparing this exciting fare and includes such delicious recipes as Red Curry with Roasted Pork and Green Banana and Sweet Green Curry with Meatballs. A chapter called "The Secret of Thai Salads" offers recipes for a small repertoire of essential dressings and such tempting recipes as Apricot, Shrimp, and Pork Salad and a salad-feast called, simply, Lamb and Roast Duck. Yu provides cultural notes and cooking lore throughout the book, often drawing from her recipe-hunting travels abroad. It's hard to imagine a better start for anyone wishing to "cook Thai" than this fully illustrated book, which perfectly balances recipes and instruction to make it an innovative standout. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
For centuries Thai cooking has been among the world's most highly regarded cuisines and also among the most mysterious. For the first time the tastes, techniques, and traditions of Thai home cooking have been gathered into one extraordinary book: Cracking the Coconut by renowned Thai chef, teacher, and writer Su-Mei Yu.
More than a simple recipe book, this is a masterful work about the art and history of Thai cooking and the people who have shaped it. But, most important, it's about preparing, eating, and thoroughly enjoying the food of Thailand.
By taking readers step by step through shopping, preparing, and serving, Cracking the Coconut dispels the notion that Thai cooking is difficult. With Su-Mei's engaging narrative and easy-to-follow recipes, Thai cooking is suddenly accessible to everyone.
The wonder of Thai food begins with exquisite contrasts in flavors and textures. Su-Mei carefully explains each ingredient and its importance. Rice is the soul of Thai cooking; coconut is its heart; salt, garlic, cilantro, and peppercorns are its spirit; chile water is the crown jewel; and chiles (prikk) and fish sauce (namm pla) are the high notes and accents in the final dish.
Su-Mei shows you how, through the simple acts of mincing, pounding, and grinding, spices release their wonderfully fragrant oils and scents as they evolve into pastes. These spice pastes are what adds the intensity and depth of flavor so unique to Thai cooking. And of course, there are very detailed instructions for cracking a coconut.
You'll be able to create such evocatively titled dishes as Crying Tiger, Galloping Horse, and A Thief's Salad, which taste as intriguing as they sound. More familiar dishes such as satÉ with peanut sauce, mee krob, cucumber salad, and padd Thai will easily become family favorites.
Cracking the Coconut allows cooks of all levels to re-create the beauty and elegance of Thai home cooking in their own kitchens. From silky Steamed Fish Custard in Banana Pouches and Spicy Green Papaya Salad to zesty sauces and accompaniments to desserts that rival those of any cuisine, Cracking the Coconut will take you on a culinary journey never before possible.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, traditional thai cooking... .......2005-02-02
I watched Su-Mei Yu's being interviewed locally here in San Diego. After seeing it, I decided to try her restaurant here. It's a great local Thai noodle restaurant and serves her famous excellent Thai Chicken.
Upon eating there twice, I decide to buy her 2 books. I absolutely love her book. Her dishes optimizes the combination of sweet, salt, sour, spicy that you REALLY can't figure out the breakdown of elements of spices when you eat the food.
After making rounds at the local Asian grocery store to buy all the ingredients one afternoon (couldn't find green peppercorns or Thai white peppercorns), I adventured making her Crying Tiger dish, a Bangkok Chicken dish that they don't serve here in US. It was awesome!! My mouth still salivates when I think of this dish. It's so good that I made it again the next day for dinner.
Can't wait to discover some of her other recipes. Being Asian American, Su-Mei Yu also incorporates some famous Chinese dishes as well!!
My favorite book on Thai cooking.......2004-05-16
I will probably have to buy a new copy in the next couple of years because the one I currently own is falling apart...especially the sections on making curry pastes. My favorite by far is the Panang Chile Paste. Takes awhile to make, so I usually make several batches at once. I have also substituted chicken, pork, shrimp and white fish for beef in the Panang Neur recipe.
I have used several Thai cookbooks in the last twenty years. This is the only one that has satisfied me. I do wish there were more diagrams and illustrations.
Delicious food but time consuming.......2003-05-21
Su-Mei Yu's book is tasty and yet informative. Not knowing a lot about Thai culture, I found the chapters breaking down the origins of the food to be most interesting. In one instance she gives a synopsis of how important the coconut is to the Thais but also explains how to prepare the coconut so you will be able to prepare the food authentic Thai-style. The instructions on how to prepare the food are very concise and simple.
Most of the recipes are from scratch, which means if you have limited time, it is not the cookbook for you (on avg it takes me 2 hrs to create one dish including the chopping/pounding of the curries and cooking time). All the curries/chile waters/pad thai involve many ingredients, so unless you have a strong interest in Asian cooking, it might not be worthwhile to purchase the book for one recipe. For example, she talks about creating tamarind juice from soaking tamarind pulp in water and advises against short-cuts such as pre-processed tamarind juice. Unless you have other recipes you want to use this ingredient for, its going to sit in your cupboard. I also found that the recipes call for a huge amount of spicy chiles, so cut down on it if you can't handle the heat.
Also, there are a minimal amount of pictures in the book, if you don't have any idea what certain ingredients look like or haven't had exposure to Thai food, you might have a hard time figuring out what the dishes are supposed to look like. Pictures of the ingredients would be very helpful as well.
Overall, the book is one of my favourites. Well written and entertaining, it is a cookbook for serious (and patient) cooks. The recipes are delicious and the flavours are complex. But for beginners of Asian cooking or for people on the go, you might want to try something simpler.
Ignore the negative reviews.......2003-03-10
This is the best book on Thai cooking I have come across. I beleive it would be the only book I would like to be a castaway with. I have a great collection of cook books , including all the classics but this is rapidly becoming my favorite. The recipies work, the text is personal and friendly, and the illustrations marvelous. The Thai names for the recipies are funny and authentic but not found in other books. This adds to the fun of cooking the food.
I have just returned from Koh Samui where I had Thai cooking classes and these recipies are right in line with what I learned. The American sustitutions are helpful for cooking here but the book tells how to be authentic too. Actually I have found most of the strange ingredients fresh here in good old Texas.
I hope to visit the author's restaurant someday. A truely wonderful book. Buy it now.
Very nicely done!.......2002-04-17
I had some hesitation in purchasing this book because the name didn't seem very thai, (half thai myself and was raised on the "real deal" as well as have been in several towns in thailand for months at a time pre-cooking years, I didn't want an americanized version of thai food) but then I had seen you on the show Cooking Live where your methods were in the same manner my mother cooks, but more of an easier measuring manner as opposed to trying to write down her recipes by watching her and her "eyeing" measurements! I just have to know the measurements before trying to alter it!
I love this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who would want to learn the basics in traditional and not americanized thai cooking, and also who is not wanting to take the lazy way out as that other reviewer was referring. The book is to show you how to make it from scratch, and not looking for a review of canned goods or just out of the can. If all of the ingredients were exactly the same and just in a can, why would a cookbook even be needed?
I don't know of many grocery stores, let alone asian markets, ESPECIALLY in California that wouldn't have fish sauce! I've lived in 4 different parts of the country since leaving home, and haven't ever had any problem in finding the majority of the ingredients shown in this book. From Indianapolis, to Phoenix, to Las Vegas and now a very small town in Michigan, they have their own asian section in the local grocery stores!
Also, such as the other reviewer criticized Pad thai, each creation varies in the preparation per cook as it would in any family, just as I'm sure everyone has a different way to prepare something as simple as meatloaf. I love this book and its a good substitution for moms cooking, but yes every time I'm at home, I do put in my orders for my moms home cooking, just as any other person would with a great cooking mom! Khap Kuhn Ka Su-Mei!
