Coudn't put it down.......2007-06-27
I have read this book a couple times and still am not bored with it. I am hooked on the entires series. I started reading falcon in the portal and had to start from the beginning because I had to know it all.
There's something about Amelia . . ........2007-06-21
Crocodile on the Sandbank is the book that started the Amelia Peabody series and it remains Elizabeth Peters best effort. I first read this book when I was eleven. I've been a fan ever since.
The comnbination of history, adventure, and romance is a winning one. But for me, the great thing about this book is Amelia herself. Intelligent, bold, courageous and outrageous. Opinionated and willfully blind on many occassions, yet with a generous heart and a romantic soul she hides. Yet this description does not begin to do the character justice. My advice, read the book, but watch out for her parasol if you annoy her.
The exchanges between Amelia and Emerson are priceless. The suspense plot (taken straight from a B Movie or an old time movie serial) is enjoyable, but it is Amelia and Emerson that steal the show.
I believe this book was originally written tongue in cheek, but something about Amelia turned this from satire into a real and enduring story. This book has remained popular so long and remains in print because it is special. Buy it, you'll read it again and again.
life changing.......2007-06-11
I read this book when I was about 12, and now I have a PhD in Egyptology. What more can I say?
A Jewel of a Read.......2007-06-04
I absolutely adore this book! What a pleasure to be treated by an author who considers the reader an intelligent being; no lengthy explanations of concepts but the assumption that the reader will have enough sense to understand what is being written and if not, use the dictionary. That being said, Crocodile on the Sandbank is the first in a series of mysteries centered around Egypt's archeological excavations during the Victorian era. Our heroine is Amelia Peabody, a British spinster who decides to travel after inheriting money. On this, her first adventure, she rescues a young woman who becomes her companion. Together they travel on to Egypt where find intrigue in the guise of a walking mummy, a big of grave digging, with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. Told in a slightly humorous vein (think Victorian humor) Elizabeth Peters has won me over as an instant fan. The story is well told, there are numerous red herrings for the mystery fan to consider, and an outcome that leaves one quite satisfied.
The perfect beginning...........2007-05-22
I started this series a few summers ago with book #3, The Mummy Case, and then read them consecutively. Since I obtained them from the library I was never able to read the first two novels. I finally broke down and purchased this book from Amazon---what a great beginning to the series!! It was interesting to learn how both sets of Emersons "got together", and to see both Walter and Evelyn as young and adventurous, though younger, they always seemed much older than Amelia and Emerson. This series of books is fun, interesting, educational and definitely adictive. I have the 2nd book on hold at the library and am getting ready to again reread this series, it has become my summer tradion. IF you are an Ann Perry fan, enjoy mysteries, the Victorian era and Egypt, you'll love this series.

Amelia Peabody, 32-year-old Victorian gentlewoman, inherited two things from her father: a considerble fortune and an unbendable will. The first was indispensible in allowing her to indulge in her life's passion: Egyptology. Without the second, the mummy's curse would have made corpses of them all. Promptly upon her father's death, Amelia takes ship for Cairo but her companion, Miss Pritchertt, succumbs to typhoid in Rome - weakminded female that she is. That's just when an unexpected distraction drops, more or less, at Amelia's feet. What happens next makes for a delicious mystery and pyramids of fun. Launched with much fanfare, The Fifth Sorceress unfortunately does not live up to the hype. Instead, Robert Newcomb's debut novel sadly fulfills the stereotype of big fantasy epics as wordy and loosely plotted, with thin characterization. Newcomb does have an interesting, apparently novel approach to magic talent--it is genetically determined. Unfortunately, the talent resides in "pure blood," making magicians qualitatively different from other humans, and giving the book an unhappy subtext. Also, the wizards (male) are good, while the sorceresses (nearly all the female characters) are evil. One hopes the sequel will address this imbalance.
The wicked Sisters of the Coven were exiled and apparently killed centuries before Prince Tristan was born. The son of a peaceful age, the magically talented prince doesn't want to be a wizard. He also doesn't want to become the King of Eutracia--but his coronation is only hours away. Then the sorceresses' specially bred army invades the palace. In the resulting massacre, Tristan, his twin sister, and the Lead Wizard are taken prisoner. Crossing the mysterious Sea of Whispers, Tristan finds himself in an unknown land--a land long since conquered by the Coven, and more dangerous and cruel than he ever could have imagined. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
Not since Terry Goodkind unsheathed the Sword of Truth has there been such an epic tale of heroism and magic that so captures the imagination as this monumental new work by a master storyteller. In The Fifth Sorceress, Robert Newcomb conjures a time and place wrought with exquisite detail, characters vividly drawn and deeply felt, and a history rich in glory and horror, splendor and secrets. . . .
“We gave them a chance once, long ago. . . . We offered to share power equally, and in peace. But they refused and chose war. With them it was all or nothing. Wizard against Sorceress. Male against female. Light against dark.”
It is more than three centuries since the ravages of a devastating war nearly tore apart the kingdom of Eutracia. In its wake, those who masterminded the bloodshed—a quartet of powerful, conquest-hungry Sorceresses—were sentenced to exile, with return all but impossible and death all but inevitable. Now a land of peace and plenty, protected and guided by a council of immortal wizards, Eutracia is about to crown a new king. And as the coronation approaches, the spirit of celebration fills every heart. Except one.
Prince Tristan is a reluctant monarch-to-be. Though born with the “endowed” blood that will give him the power to master magic, and destined by tradition to succeed his father as ruler, he is a rebel soul. And when he discovers the ancient, hidden caves where strange red waters flow—possessed of their own mysterious magic—it only makes him yearn all the more to escape his future of duty . . . and succumb to the stirrings of enchantment within him.
But more than tradition compels Tristan to ascend the throne. The very existence of Eutracia depends upon it. For after these long centuries of peace, dreadful omens have begun to appear, heralding something too unspeakable to ponder. And if indeed the old evil has returned, hungry to wreak vengeance, Tristan’s role in an ages-old prophecy must be fulfilled—or the cost to his kingdom and his people will be beyond imagination.
It will be a battle like none ever known, against an enemy whose thirst for blood and domination is depthless and unyielding. And for Tristan, it will be the ultimate challenge: facing an adversary whose greatest weapon is the person he loves most—transformed into the instrument of his annihilation . . . and the catalyst that will doom Eutracia forever to darkness.

How did this get one good review.......2007-09-19
I bought this book based on the Publishers Weekly review rather then the Amazon review, should have listened. I hope it is not a comment on the low expectations for fantasy writers as well as their editors that this book was even minimally recommended.
Wow, this book is shallow and it would appear not edited. On page 65 Tristan suggests that women allowed to learn the craft operate under a Death Enchantment. On the next page he is stunned to learn of the existence of Death Enchantments, come on.
Great series.......2007-09-02
I wouldn't pay much attention to a lot of these reviews. Sure there are a lot of cliche fantasy elements, but the story is original and exciting. So I suppose it really all comes down to whether you read fantasy for the little details or for the overall quality of the story. This is one of my favorite series of all time. It is right up there with George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.
Enjoyable Read.......2007-08-14
I am in the middle of listening to this novel on CD and have really been enjoying it, to the point I'd like to read the print version next. I'm an avid woman!! fantasy reader and my other favorites include Tolkien, Goodkind, Lewis, Rowling, McKiernan. I have been telling my husband every morning that I enjoy how Newcomb is using familiar fantasy epic elements in a new way. Once out of the very beginning of the novel, I have found the plot to be imaginative, fast-paced, and very entertaining! I was disappointed to see so many bad reviews and I am really perplexed by them. I find the antagonists to be sinister in a guilty pleasure kind of way and take no offense to the women being the "bad guys." That was one of the elements that intrigued me actually. As far as the story being graphic, well all I can reiterate is that I love to read Terry Goodkind and have learned that with the minutia that I love to read, I will get a dose of gory detail and I frankly like to squirm in my seat a little. It makes the happy moments of the story that much more enjoyable.
Pretty Decent.......2007-07-09
Found book in a beach condo, and decided to give it a shot despite all the horrid reviews and readers claiming to be insulted. Was pleasantly surprised to find that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, there are some standard elements, good-looking prince who doesn't want to be king, and doesn't realise his blessings until it is too late, this becomes his motivation for his actions, wizard advisers and evil antagonists, but there is also good originality. As another reviewer mentioned, a surprising number of good guys meet horrible ends, the wizards are not actually all the smart, make awful blunders and don't actually understand their craft all that well, everyone does end up paying for their mistakes, hero can be irritating and silly and makes unwise decisions, all fitting his age, females can be evil, these are all good departures from the standard. I actually found the story to be opposite from comments that most reviewers submitted, author made it quite clear that evil exists in both genders and it is an individual choice of which to practise. Good tie off at the end with sufficient hanging threads to warrant sequels. I'm glad I ignored the bad reviews, will definitely be looking for the next volume.
The positive reviews for this book are obviously planted........2007-01-02
I literally forced myself to finish this book. This was, without a doubt, the most dissapointing fantasy book I have had the misfortune to come upon. The book jacket made it look rather interesting, and when reviewers compared it to the greatest fantasy series on the market today (Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire"), I admit I was excited to read it.
According to the story females are predetermined from birth to become evil in this world (not going to win the writer fans in the national organization for women, but it is fantasy, and an original idea, so whatever). The fact that the obligitory mentor-wizards condecendingly keep secrets from the story's "chosen one" just so they can knowingly shake their heads at one another may be excused because it is the authors first novel (ridiculously stupid, but there aren't enough original fantasy authors in the genre, so no need to discourage all of them whenever one makes a mistake).
However, every single person who read this book before it was actually published, especially "editors" need to be fired from whatever jobs they have due to plot inconsistencies, GRAMMAR, SPELLING, and the over use of the phrase "and by the way" (used again and again by evil characters to be "cleverly suspensful", I guess). Any chapter in this book would not make it past an eighth grade english teacher without being destroyed by a red pen.

Customer Reviews:
The tremendous imaginative power of a truly great mind........2003-11-21
For any s/f devotee, particularly Wells fans, this book is a must. It is an absolute feast for the mind, disclosing any number of fictional but feasible possibilities, and how people cope with their unexpected benefits and dangers. Most of the stories are tightly written, boldly imaginative, and always entertaining. I and couldn't put it down, even after I had read it through the first time.
By way of examples, in separate stories, you will encounter a lost Inca kingdom where no one has eyes; two chemists who discover an alkaloid so powerful that men who ingest become equipped with the power to move at super speed; orchids that anesthetize people and suck their blood; ants that become intelligent and drive people out of the tropics in South America: how the Earth barely ecapes destruction when two planets collide and pass by on their way to the Sun; the tale of the first adventurer to descend into the ocean depths, the man who discovers the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge in Eden, and on, and on, and on.
In typical Wellsian fashion, each story is festooned with those small details giving examples of careful though and review. for example in "The New Accelerator", the author is careful to not how the men's clothing becomes singed because they move so fast.
The number of things Wells envisons that have since come to exist include paved highways, powered flight, descent to the bottom of the sea in steel globes, and many more. It is perhaps ths aspect of the book that is the most fascinating.
For entertainment and intellectual stimulation from s/f, Wells is hard to beat. This book is very highly recommended. DON'T LOAN IT OUT.
Great Value for all of you Sci-Fi Lovers.......2000-03-25
All books written by Wells has proven themselves worth their salt as all time sci-fi classics. This collection of stories is sure to please all of the most avid readers expecting great imagination.

Another "cooking light for weight loss" cookbook? Upon first glance such a reaction is understandable, especially if you're not familiar with chef Kathleen Daelemans, who has been in the trenches of the weight-loss war and not only quickly commands attention with her writing but excites a mind and lifestyle change. Cooking Thin with Chef Kathleen freely shares the author's own experiences and struggles with weight as a child and an adult, and explains how this trained chef went from a size 22 to a 6. Daelemans has what it takes to be an empathetic role model for those who need to make changes to their diets for physical or mental health reasons. Her advice and recipes are aimed at real people.
Her self-effacing stories are at times painful (such as babysitting the night she should have been going to the prom), but the road that led her to healthy cuisine and weight loss is almost comical (though she certainly didn't believe it to be too funny at the time). After the excitement of moving to Hawaii to launch an Italian bistro at a seaside resort, the author, then a robust 205 pounds, was deflated when she arrived to find she had been replaced and put in charge of the establishment's spa cuisine.
The 200 recipes, as expected, are a mixture of healthy ways to prepare beef, chicken, fish, and vegetables. She has even included some full-fat recipes, such as a rich Lemon and Pecan Loaf. These are accompanied with reminders that it is OK to indulge occasionally, but a trip to the gym or eating "light" during the other parts of the day are the necessary balances to achieve weight loss. Even if it is not weight loss, just a healthier approach to eating you seek, Daelemans's book will inspire and entertain. --Teresa Simanton
Book Description
The Food Network's newest star, Chef Kathleen Daelemans, is living proof that great-tasting food and dramatic weight loss can go hand in hand. A decade ago, she was unexpectedly chosen to become head chef of one of the world's most luxurious spas in Hawaii. One problem: she weighed 205 pounds and was a size 22 -- not exactly an advertisement for the joys of low-fat eating. But Kathleen wasn't about to give up her love of food, and she set out to create a cuisine she could be proud of. Her ground rules were simple. Every dish had to satisfy. Pleasure must rule. No one should have to weigh or measure food. And the "d" word was banned -- unless the "d" stood for outrageously delicious. Spa guests, movie stars, recording artists, sports figures, and supermodels flocked to the restaurant's tables. Critics from the New York Times, Esquire, Food tit, and the Los Angeles Times raved. Kathleen herself lost seventy-five pounds. Now, in this book, Chef Kathleen shares her sassy philosophy and the secrets of her weight-loss success story while giving you the tools to make healthy changes for yourself. Falling in love with her food is easy, with recipes like Split-Roasted Chicken and Potatoes, Buttermilk Baked Onion Rings, Sesame Ginger Shrimp, Green Beans with Lemon and Parmesan, and Dark Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake, and the book is packed with shortcut tips, comments from real people, and suggestions for transforming one meal into a second, equally delicious one. With COOKING THIN, the journey to vitality starts now.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting book .......2007-10-08
I enjoyed reading Cooking Thin...and have tried several recipes, which were all very good. I am disappointed that she doesn't include nutritional information with each recipe.
Great Tasting Recipes that do not Dissapoint.......2007-10-06
Every recipe I've made from this book has gotten an A+ (for those that don't know what that means - it's keeping track about how well a recipe fares the taste test of friends & family and whether it gets repeated in the future). It's always very helpful to hear which recipes have worked for readers and cooks, so here are mine for those that own or may own the book in the future. All the various fish recipes which are so easy and delicious: Pan-fried Paprika Sole, Swordfish with Olive Oil, Lemon and Parsley, Baked Fish (I used Catfish) with Soy Dill Sauce. Not to miss: Spicy Black Bean Chili with Quick Corn Bread (I added these goodies to the cornbread: 1 tbsp chives, 3/4 cup sweet corn, 1/2 chili finely chopped). Lazy Man's Lasagna. Split-Roasted Chicken and Vegetables. Soups: Lentil Lemon Soup and Corn Soup with Zucchini, Tomato and Basil. And finally Granny's Banana Nut Bread. Have fun cooking!
Chef Kathleen Rocks!!!.......2007-06-27
I really enjoyed this book and found it so helpful that I sent it to a friend who is also trying to establish more healthy weight and eating style. It has a lot of the recipes that are really tasty and most are very easy and all are flexible. What I like best is her personality and style of writing. She's got a GREAT sense of humor and uses it well. Sometimes I read a page or two just for the pep talk and the acknowledgment that losing weight may not be the easiest thing to do, but IT IS DO-ABLE!!! I wrote down a lot of her observations and helpful quips and bring them with me to re-read at work and other times. Chef Kathleen does a great service with her contribution to more sensible eating. Chef Kathleen Rocks!!!
Disappointing.......2007-05-07
The recipes in this cookbook are just "OK" and won't be repeated. The nutritional information is not included either, leaving me to run every recipe through my Master Cook software to figure it out myself. Cooking Light and Eating Well cookbooks are the best weight loss cookbooks I've tried so far.
Where is the nutrition information?.......2007-02-19
I enjoyed the inspiring stories and plans in the beginning. The recipes seem good enough. I've cooked a few. However, they are missing the nutrition information for each recipe! I bet some things in the book are healthier than others but I wanted to choose what I wanted to cook on my own. If she wrote a cookbook from her "spa kitchen" when she was in Hawaii, with the nutrition information, I'd buy that first. Try Bob Greene's "Best Life" instead if you are looking for a starter healty living book.
