Book Description

Lyra Collins has made a life for herself in a sleepy artists’ community in Arizona. Having escaped from a cult five years ago, she keeps a low profile, making a living as an artist. But when a mysterious man with a dark, dangerous look appears on her doorstep, she knows it’s time to run again.

Former cop Dare Lancaster didn’t mean to lead a bunch of fanatical cult members straight to Lyra’s door. But now that he’s gotten her into this mess, he’s determined to get her out. The frantic heat their bodies generate whenever they’re together makes him want to save her…

Neal Barker’s grandfather was the first Prophet Jericho, and Neal now rules the Temple of Light commune unchecked. According to his visions, he and Lyra are destined to produce the new Messiah, so he will stop at nothing to make her his own. But soon Dare will discover just how far he’ll go to protect Lyra—and never let her go.

4 out of 5 stars Loved the action, loved the romance, loved the storyline! Great start to a new series!.......2007-07-13

I love the author and her "Magic" series. I normally read the paranormal romances and was nervous picking up this book. Honestly I didn't buy this book at first, after seeing that the male character was named Dare I was worried. I was like his name is, Dare? But I'am so glad that I bought this book. This book was fast paced and sexy. The story line was great! It had me turning the pages so fast I finished the book in a day. Crazy huh!

I felt for Lyra and her mom. The cult in this book is scarey and believable. Lyra being a 23 year old virgin was even believable, oddly enough. Dare was such a hunk and what a sweetie!! I thought this was a great read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Chosen Prey .......2007-07-12

After Lyra Collin's father was killed when she was thirteen in a police bust gone bad, her mother was talked into joining a cult called The Temple of Light by its Prophet, Neil Barker. For three years Lyra lived in fear of the day she turned eighteen and would be forced to become one of Neil's wives. Lyra escaped before she could be forced into a farce of a marriage and has been on the run now for five years from the cult.

Being a private investigator has been the main focus of Dare Lancaster's life since he left the police force after the death of his partner. Taking the job of finding Lyra Collins ended up being a lot more than he expected. Protecting Lyra from the Temple of Light was now his responsibility since they found her because of him. There was another danger to him, though. He could very well lose his life along with his heart to this strong, yet fragile woman.

Cheyenne McCray is one of my favorite authors. One of the reasons why is that she spins a tale so vividly that I always feel as if I'm right there, living the story along with the characters. Chosen Prey lured me in so deeply that I could feel the pain that Lyra experiences. I did like both Lyra and Dare, loved Nick and loved to hate Neil, Mark and Adam. Both the story and the characterization are rich in detail and emotion. The only problem that I had with Chosen Prey was that during the five years that Lyra was on the run, she never truly learned how to defend herself against being taken, though I do have to say she did learn how to disappear and hide extremely well.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-06-13

This is a hot sensual romantic suspense and it stands up to all those words. I enjoyed the book and will eagerly look forward to more of this type by Ms. McCray.

Lyra Collins escaped from a cult when she was 18 and has been hiding ever since. She is a talented artist and has survived the last five yrs by selling her art. Life has not been easy but just when she at last thinks she is safe Dare Lancaster finds her.

Dare Lancaster is a Private Investigator hired by a member of the cult to find the artist who is producing a certain type of art. Dare has been a police officer before he turned rancher and sometime PI. He and his partner run a security agency.

Unknown to him he is followed to Lyra's house and she meets him with pepper spray and a firmly slammed door. When he is leaving he sees several men with peculiar hair and clothes who pull up to her door. They rush out surrounding the house and Dare realizes something is definitely not right. Wiping pepper spray out of his eyes he jumps into the fray and manages to rescue Lyra, quickly taking her to a safe place.

When time allows Lyra tells him about the cult and it's leader Neal Barker who has made a prophecy that Lyra will bare the new Messiah. She is to become his No. 1 wife and concieve the next leader of the cult.

The romance is hot, the action is non-stop and the story is fasinating. I loved it. If you like alot of heat in your romances this one is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad--Good Suspence and Worthy Characters.......2007-06-03

Lyra Collins has been on the run since she was a teenager. Having found what she thought was a safe haven in Bisbee, Arizona, she lets her guard down one too many times. The relentless people of the Temple of Light have found her and its time to run again. An unwilling participant in a sordid prophecy, Lyra refuses to bow to the cult prophet's delusional desires. The cult members bring determined to all an all-new, dangerous level though and they will do anything to recapture her.

Former cop turned private investigator Dare Lancaster never meant for the alluring young woman to come to harm. When he leads to bad guys straight to her door though, he vows to set his mistakes to rights. The fact that he can't resist her sweet body and devilish charm sweetens the desire to help her as well. He's better at protecting than he is at detecting in this instance and he sets out to take down the cult that wants to harm Lyra. Using his previous skills as a cop, he forms a rigid defense around the unconventional little beauty and an even hotter, sensual one around her heart. When the cult comes calling again though, he'll have to pull out all the stops in order to keep the cult's leader from seeing his evil plans through.

Chosen Prey is rife with bold, desperate sensuality, fueled by the precarious situation Lyra and Dare find themselves in. Though neither has met before, each knows there is something primal between them. McCray writes their story with a passion fueled suspense that starts with action and ends with even more heart tripping action by the end. It's a fast paced read that is suspenseful and hits the mark wonderfully with regards to Lyra's characterization. My one regret is that Dare is not as equally fleshed out, but what we do get of him is hot and certainly left me admiring his bold pursuit of Lyra as well as his determination to see her rid of the Temple's shadow. The details of their environments, from Bisbee to the stark conditions of the Temple's compound, are wonderful enough to give the reader a clear impression from beginning to end. As an intro for me to what MCCray can do with romantic suspense, I came away pretty pleased and look forward to reading more such romance from her.

Cheyenne has done it again with a pulse pounding, heart stoping new series. It gets you hooked from the first 10 pages and keeps you reading. I got so into it that I felt what they characters felt. A great romantic suspense.

When a spring thaw disinters the body of a young woman who's been missing for over a year, Minneapolis detective Lucas Davenport doesn't have much to go on except the victim's rumored connection with an unnamed man, who may be an artist and also, perhaps, a priest. But then the deserted property where her body was discovered turns out to be a killing field full of other young blondes last seen in the company of a man with a nasty habit of superimposing their faces on pornographic drawings. Davenport begins to close in on a serial killer whose perverted hobby provides the clues Davenport needs to stop him in his bloody tracks. James Qatar isn't a priest, and he's not really an artist, but he's definitely a monster, one who's met his match in Davenport.

Davenport is a smart, thoughtful cop whose girlfriend is pressuring him to make a commitment to parenthood and whose boss is about to lose her job in a political turnover. While the search for the killer is handled in author John Sandford's usual, crisp, procedural style, it almost seems to be a pretext for exploring the evolution of Davenport's relationship with Dr. Weather Karkinnen. This 12th adventure in the author's popular Prey series will undoubtedly rocket to the top of the bestseller list, though it's not a standout. The novel displays the solid craftsmanship and narrative drive Sandford's known for, but his hero seems a little dispirited and out of sorts. Perhaps fatherhood will give Davenport a new lease on life. In the meantime, check out Sandford's backlist featuring his other hero, Kidd (The Fool's Run, The Empress File, The Devil's Code), who has a nice little walk-on here in which he begins a romance with Davenport's partner Marcy Sherrill. --Jane Adams

Book Description

A killer has some serious cleaning up to do to keep from getting caught--and Davenport's detection skills make him number one on his hit list.

4 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Story.......2007-09-11

I enjoyed this fast paced story and I am a big fan of Lucas Davenport. I missed this book in the Prey novels, so I'm doing a little catch up. I found I got to visit with the usual characters and a few new characters. I thought that the characters were described extremely well and the plot kept me guessing throughout the book. This book is a real thriller and I always look forward to Mr. Sandford's new books. Highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars what a book...........2007-08-06

What a book,Its a lot of reading(of course I dont get much time to read). But the book was very suspencefull and lots of mystery. Why didnt I rate it a 5 star Book? I didnt like it when james Quarter went and killed his own mother,I thought that was very morbid and a terrible thing to have done. This Book however saves the who done it to very, very end. So don,t read the last page before reading this Book. Its not a bad book,But certianly not the best book Ive Read....

5 out of 5 stars Nobody does it better.......2006-03-30

Sandford is our generation's master of the crime novel. Read one of the Prey novels, you'll want to read them all. Lucas Davenport is a beautifully flawed good guy with a streak of badness about him. Sandford weaves his stories flawlessly and hauls you along like a fish on a line until the very last page.
-- Mark LaFlamme, author of "The Pink Room."

4 out of 5 stars Short book, fast pace, good writing.......2006-02-24

I've always liked John Sandford's books because they are always to the point. Nothing comes closer to this description of his writing than Chosen Prey.

The short length of the book allows you to finish it in a matter of hours. The pace is relentless and the writing so absolutely witty. Sandford has a good ear for dialogue; the characters just speak as if you were hearing them up close and personal.

Sandford manages to write about people with which the reader can sympathize, or at the very least, empathize.

The story is about a full-time college art professor and part-time serial killer who photographs women and superimposes them on pornographic images taken from the net. It also tells of the cops who try to figure out his transgressions.

There is nothing difficult to read in this book. The plot itself is current and manages to hold your interest. While it is by no means unique, the reader can appreciate that Sandford's twists in the standard plotline (affable serial killer) is enough to make the reader appreciate it as making it Sandford's own.

There is never a dull moment in this book and if you're stuck in an airport somewhere waiting for a delayed flight, I suggest you look this book up. You'll be satisfied that you did.

4 out of 5 stars A fast, slightly flawed read........2005-08-17

One thing that holds true about many of the PREY novels is this: if people like the villain truly exist...be afraid. This time Lucas is matched up with a sex-addicted serial killer/artist who literally gets off on the kill. James Qatar is brutal and calculating, and seemingly uncatchable for the longest time.

This is a fast read, both due to the fast pace and the relatively short length. The glaring problem to me is the same problem that has appeared in every PREY novel. Profanity is necessary. I understand that, but the constant use of "GD" is over the top. It's excessive and really takes away from the reading experience after a while.

Otherwise, a great read.

I like all of Dave Duncan's books, but I think this is my favorite. I've had it for years and pull it out to read again every so often.

Jerry is such an average Joe that you wonder how he got into Mera in the first place. Then he has to handle such a series of characters that you can't imagine how he will pull it off.

I can't recommend it too highly.

A Rose Red City is a short but enjoyable book. As I recall -- and I admit that it's been a while since I read it -- the tale is one that centers around the "saving" of individuals, by offering them Greek-style immortality. This device allows for an examination of the differing attitudes and priorities of mortals vs. immortals; further, because "rescue" attempts ensure that immortals are temporarily rendered mortal, it allows us to see how they deal with vulnerability, and ultimately, being human.

                    Book Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "red and rosé wine" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

4 out of 5 stars STV #5 Incident at Arbuk - A quick and interesting read!.......2003-11-30

I found this first solo novel of John G. Betancourt's to be a quick and interesting read. Although there might have been some grammatical errors in the novel, they were minor and inconsequential. One of the first things you'll notice in this story is the authors writing style, which is very good, lending heavily to a well paced novel. I did find his characterizations to be a bit off, but that is to be expected given the time in which this novel was written and published, with approximately only a years worth of episodes to work off of.

In good keeping with Voyager novels of the time, the cover art is a slight cut above the other titles being published at that time.

                                    The premise:

Voyager stumbles upon a distress signal from a shuttle and follows it to a nearly deserted system known as Arbuk. Once there they discover what is essentially a doomsday machine that is considerably more powerful than a starship. They also soon discover a rather interesting alien who is a Sperian. Captain Janeway and the crew of Voyager soon find themselves under attack by an alien fleet bent on taking possession of the weapon and they must find a way to keep it out of their hands...

                                    What follows from there is, as stated above, a quick and interesting early Star Trek Voyager novel that is well worth the time to read. I recommend this title to any and all fans of Star Trek fiction. {ssintrepid}

3 out of 5 stars Where was the proofreader?.......2003-08-20

Before discussing the substance of this story, I have to say I was dismayed by the lack of proofreading. Not only were there simple typographical errors, but often extra words were inserted where they did not belong. Also, characters spoke in ways we didn't hear them speak on the television show; for instance, B'Elanna refers to Voyager as "the Voyager," so, instead of saying she was returning to Voyager, she'd say she was returning to "the Voyager." (Where was the editor? How about continuity?) I've read several Voyager books, and noticed this one had the most mistakes. Beyond that, it was a somewhat interesting story.

                                    CAUTION: Mild spoilers follow.

In what appeared to be a crossover from the original series, Voyager encounters a "doomsday machine," but, aside from mentioning this, the book doesn't offer any further linkage. It might have been more interesting if this had been Matt Decker's doomsday machine, but as far as we know from this book, it probably was not.

The alien species was interesting if for nothing other than morphology. The Sperians have no eyes, ears or noses, just mouths and many tendrils atop their heads. Turns out these tendrils provide their visual, auditory and olfactory senses. Other than this, perhaps the most engaging part of the story comes when Tuvok enters a mind meld with a Sperian. After the meld, the two are still linked -- I don't recall this happening before in Trek lore. Tuvok has part of the Sperian's personality, and vice versa. It was curious, and added to the story, but...it was never resolved at the end!

There was an entertaining side story about the disgruntled ex-Maquis, Paul Fairman, who sets out to find his way off Voyager by amassing funds via a black market replicator. He and Neelix have some amusing interactions, and it is finally left to Neelix to solve this personnel issue.

Similar to other Trek books, this was a quick, escapist read. If that's what you're looking for, then by all means, read on! Just know that, for whatever reason, the editors didn't give this one the attention it deserved.

4 out of 5 stars Incident At Arbuk.......2001-11-19

Incident At Arbuk is a good book.It started out slow, but picked up at the end. It's about the voyager crew finding a deadly weapon, more powerful than any starfleet vessel. Inside a shuttle, they find a Sperian unconcious. Could the Sperian be a link to the weapon? Can they make him concious again? If you want to find out more, I suggest you to read it.

                                    3 out of 5 stars A Quick Read.......2001-07-05

Incident at Arbuk was an average book. The plot: Crew finds weird sensor readings. Crew finds big superweapon. Crew finds an alien. Crew finds trouble. Crew finds more trouble. Crew finds solution. It's mostly one big cliché. But it was fairly interesting, just not engrossing. The Sperians were pretty cool aliens, but that's about all that caught my attention. Just a quick, slightly amusing read.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better........2001-03-15

This book was a minor dissapointment in my case, partly because it had a plot totally centered around an episode of the original series.

I like to see continuity, but since the same issue had already been adressed in the TNG novel "Vendetta" by Peter David, it seemed unnecessary.

"Incident at Arbuck" is set shortly after the first season episode "The Cloud", although (again) you get no information about this in the fashion of a historian's note, so I figured it out while reading the book.

It contains good action and characterization and is build like an episode of the show, including a totally unremarkable, if well written side-plot, wich at least is tied to the main plot in the end. The book is readable, but nothing you should ecpecially look for.

3 out of 5 stars A perfectly good Voyager novel........2007-07-14

This book has no truly outstanding qualities to single it out as standing above the rest of the genre, but if you enjoy "Star Trek: Voyager" novels, you should certainly enjoy it. Fairly formulaic, it is a perfectly representative example of the genre: reasonably well-written, presenting the characters faithfully, accurately portraying the "feel" of the series. Note: this book is set before the departure of Kes and the appearance of Seven of Nine, so if you enjoy Voyager primarily for Seven's character, this book is not for you. In fact, it is set early enough in the series that if you are more familiar with episodes from the later seasons, my claim that the book accurately captures the feel of the series will seem inaccurate; it would be more precise to say that it accurately captures the feel of the early series episodes, while characterizations were still being established and the crew was not a smoothly functioning unit yet.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and tasty..........2007-01-27

I have slightly above-average cooking skills, and must employ them at least 5 nights a week for my 6'4" husband and 9 year old daughter who both eat like they have hollow legs. This book is extremely easy to use, which is essential for my time-strapped evenings.

After a brief introduction about technique and tools, this book is organized by food type, i.e. meat, poultry, seafood, vegetable etc., with additional brief sections about garnishes and bread-sides. The recipes are not exotic, meaning you won't need a specialty grocery for every recipe. They are however intensely flavorful, utilizing plain, old-fashioned techniques like sautee and simmer to bring the flavors together.

The editorial review of this book complains about its lack of sophistication in the descriptions of each recipe, but I prefer the simplicity. The page layouts remain uncluttered and (more importantly) un-intimidating, which is important at 6:30 pm just walking in the door from work and faced with a hungry kid and a blank kitchen!

Included in this book are several standards like chili, beef stew, chicken soup, and vegetable ministrone in addition to some surprising and refreshing ideas such as cold avocado soup with cashews, white chili with chicken or turkey, and lamb shanks with gremolata. All retain their simplicity, flavor, and ease of preparation.

There is nothing more heartening than the bouquet of steam rising from a pot of fresh, homemade soup in these cold winter months... unless it's watching your family smile around their spoons!

4 out of 5 stars good recipes, no fluff.......2006-09-16

I really like this book, for , as stated by others, it is a hearty collection of soups and stews, with a great variety ranging from vegeterian to meat-filled to cold and even some fruit. I have some definte favorites, especially the smoked salmon chowder (just straight up chowder, nothing weird like peas or cocktail onions like another recipe I have seen!), but I do have to say that not all recipes have worked out for me. It could have been my taste, but I think a little more instruction, or perhaps tips/recommendations, from the author on the selection of certain ingredients would have helped the bad recipes turn out better. I would definitely recommend this book, especially with soup season starting up soon!

                                              5 out of 5 stars Delectable Book.......2006-04-02

I got this one for Christmas and have tried perhaps 18-20 recipes since (I'm addicted to soups and stews).

Often, I have followed recipes in other books which were very disappointing, and sometimes very poorly seasoned. If I repeated the recipe, I often had to adjust seasonings, etc., to make it more palatable. However, every single one turned out perfect! Though I have a habit of improvising, I'm confident that I will not likely change these recipes.

4 out of 5 stars NOT MUCH BETTER THAN A GOOD BOWL OF SOUP.......2005-02-01

I'll admit..I'm mainly a soup person only in the fall and winter months when it's cooler and you don't mind a nice pot of soup simmering on the stove for several hours. Soup and winter just goes together even though this book contains many lighter receipes that can be enjoyed all year round.

This is a follow-up to the Big Book of Casseroles and contains receipes for over 250 soups, stews, and chowders. Some very elegant soups perfect for a formal dinner party to go along with stick to your ribs soups for tailgating before a big game. There's old classic favorites such as Chicken Noodle, Motzah Ball and Clam Chowder to go along with more exotic soups such as the Thai Ginger Chicken Soup and Spicy Cuban Pork Stew. One of my favorites is the Chicken with Buttermilk Thyme dumplings which is just fantastic in the dead of winter like it is now. There are several potato soup recipes which I absolutely love including the baked potato soup.

The recipes are fairly simple to make and most of the ingredients are availabe from the grocery store but a few will require a visit to a gourmet food store if you really want to do it right. This book is a soup-eaters dream!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook for the past year!.......2005-01-27

I love soup, but I don't like to spend all day making it. Maryana has "boiled down" every recipe to the simplest yet tastiest way to make it. Try the Sunriver Soup for company...it is delicious. I have had this book for over a year, and have made over 20 of the recipes...they have all been fantastic. Both of the Gumbo recipes are super, the seafood one is divine. The Gazpacho is perfect, and I love the Mexican Chicken and Corn soup too. I like how she doesn't require a million and one ingredients but just selects the perfect combination of spices for each soup.
