Book Description

Discover the delicious mystery that started it all!

No one cooks up a delectable, suspense-filled mystery quite like Hannah Swensen, Joanne Fluke's dessert-baking, red-haired heroine whose gingersnaps are as tart as her comebacks, and whose penchant for solving crimes—one delicious clue at a time—has made her a bestselling favorite. And it all began on these pages, with a bakery, a murder, and some suddenly scandalous chocolate-chip crunchies. Featuring a bonus short story and brand new, mouthwatering recipes, this limited edition of the very first Hannah Swensen mystery is sure to have readers coming back for seconds…

Hannah Swenson already has her hands full trying to dodge her mother's attempts to marry her off while running The Cookie Jar, Lake Eden, Minnesota's most popular bakery. But once Ron LaSalle, the beloved delivery man from the Cozy Cow Dairy, is found murdered behind her bakery with Hannah's famous Chocolate Chip Crunchies scattered around him, her life just can't get any worse. Determined not to let her cookies get a bad reputation, she sets out to track down a killer.

Who would have the sheer audacity—and the motive—to kill the most punctual delivery man Hannah ever had? Topping the list is the high school football coach. What exactly was his wife doing, making the rounds with the milkman? Could Max Turner, owner of Cozy Cow Dairy, have had a secret he didn't want to share with his top employee? The more Hannah snoops, the more suspects turn up. Why has Lake Eden's most prominent prodigal son, Benton Woodley, just resurfaced? And what about the mysterious Mr. Harris who seemed interested in buying the property next to the dairy, but then disappeared? This is one murder that's starting to leave a very bad taste in Hannah's mouth. And if she doesn't watch her back, Hannah's sweet life may get burned to a crisp.

Filled with a healthy sprinkling of humor and a delightful assortment of nuts, CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE MURDER serves up a great new mystery series and introduces a delicious, down-home sleuth that mystery readers will surely savor for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Great read for dessert lovers.......2007-09-12

Being a dessert lover, reading the Hannah Swensen cozy mystery series is a must. Set in a small town with a variety of small town character personalities adds to the coziness of the mysteries. Hannah herself is a very likeable herione. Some might find her outspoken at times or maybe even "butting" in where she dont belong, and truth be told in other books I have not always been attracted to these type of characters. There is something about Hannah that draws me though. Maybe it is the fact that she bakes lovely creations, and I can just taste them as I read through the recipes included in the books. Perhaps it is her cat, Moishe,me being such a cat lover. I dont really know, but I just find Hannah a person that I would love to get to know.
Her sister, Andrea, and her mother are not like Hannah at all. In this book it seems that Hannah is feeling her realtionship out with her sister. Where as in later books, Hannah and her sister seem to get closer. Also, another relationship that involves Hannah is her love interest. I keep wondering if she will end up with the dentist or the policeman. I thought by the end of this book it would be the policeman, but reading the next book in the series it seems something shifts. I have not read them all, but this is certainly one point of the books that keeps me interested.
Dessert lovers and cozy mystery lovers will certainly find this series a joy to read.
One note...I do not have the hardcover edition of this book that was not too long ago released. As some of the other readers have said this is a re-release in hardcover with an additional short story added. I read this book last year, but I had a hard time finding a new paperback copy because I believe it was out of print. I ended up getting a used copy, but I bought it before this hardback edition came out. I said all of this to say, that with this edition out it is easier to find, as I had to search high and low for a copy about two years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Great mystery series!.......2007-06-08

This book is one in a series of fun, easy to read mysteries. They all take place surrounding the heroine's cookie shop in the middle of a small town. The stories are fun and one can usually guess who-done-it before the end. The mysteries are accompanied by side stories that run through all the books and keep you coming back for more. In between the chapters are amazing recipies for desserts. I have tried several of them so far and have nothing bad to say! The only thing I don't like about this series is the wait for new books. It takes a while for the newest book to get into paperback, which is the only way I will buy mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars A delectable debut!.......2007-04-04

Twenty-nine-year-old Hannah Swensen was content spending her days as a student pursuing a degree in English. Sure, she had some ups-and-downs with the opposite sex, including a tumultuous relationship with a philandering professor, but life as a student was carefree and fun. However, when her father dies unexpectedly, Hannah is called in for reinforcement by her sister Andrea, expected to help her mother put the pieces of her life back together in Lake Eden, Minnesota. But Hannah isn't complaining. Packing up her belongings, she heads to her small, rural hometown of Lake Eden, where she promptly turns her love of baking into a business by opening the uber-popular bakery, The Cookie Jar. The Cookie Jar sees various visitors on a daily basis, all looking for a sugar rush in the form of some of Hannah's most delightful treats - from Pecan Chews to Lovely Lemon Bars. But when the shop closes, Hannah returns to her condo to cuddle up with her scruffy kitty, Moishe - much to her mother's chagrin. In her mother's opinion, Hannah should already be married and producing grandbabies for her. But Hannah's plans are much different. She's comfortable with the life of a successful singleton, and doesn't plan on changing for anyone. But then, tragedy hits. Ron LaSalle, a deliveryman from the Cozy Cow Dairy, who delivers milk to The Cookie Jar on a daily basis, is found murdered behind Hannah's shop - shot between the eyes, with Hannah's popular Chocolate Chip Crunchies scattered around his lifeless body. Hannah can't imagine discovering anything worse so early in the morning - or any time for that matter. And, as the local tragedy begins to sink in, Hannah realizes that, due to the placement of her crunchy treats, her cookies may end up with a bad rap, that could easily slow down business for her thriving shop. Determined to save the reputation of The Cookie Jar, Hannah, along with the help of her sister Andrea's husband - and resident police officer - Bill, decides to do a little investigating of her own to track down the killer, and restore comfort and safety to the small town, and the people who reside there. But as Hannah begins opening her ears a bit more to learn about the goings-on surrounding the dead man and his cohorts, she begins to realize that many more people than she ever expected are armed with a motive. And, when she stumbles - literally - upon the body of a second victim, Hannah realizes that the murderer wasn't just killing at random - he or she had an ax to grind, and felt that murder was the way to solve every problem at hand. The thing the murderer was unaware of, however, was how determined Hannah would be to finger the culprit, and help her brother-in-law achieve the promotion he has been craving since he joined the force. Now, amid baking crunchy delights for various organizations and parties throughout town, Hannah must find a way to bring the killer to justice before another victim is discovered. But as she muddles through a tangled web of injustices and crime, Hannah realizes that, if she doesn't want to get burned, she'd better stay out of the kitchen.

Perhaps I can blame it on my addiction to FOOD NETWORK, or my love of Rachael Ray, but I am totally, head-over-heels in love with culinary mysteries of all kinds - especially those revolving around baking sweet desserts. So when I heard about Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swensen series, I just knew that I had to take a bite out of the debut. From page one, I found myself head-over-heels for Hannah. Not only is she an independent female character, but her love of both animals, and desserts make her a grande dame in my eyes. Hannah's no-nonsense, frills-free appearance and thoughts make her appear down-to-earth, and approachable. While her ability to find time to run a successful business, and track down a killer make her a model multi-tasker. Hannah's interactions with everyone from her overbearing, bossy mother; to her slightly pudgy, cookie-addicted brother-in-law Bill are laugh-out-loud funny; while her discussions regarding spousal abuse and money troubles with various townspeople really show a sympathetic side to her character, which only makes the reader like her more. Fluke manages to present amazing character development for just about every person who waltzes into The Cookie Jar, making the reader feel as if these are our own neighbors; however, she makes it difficult to pinpoint who the exact killer is by creating motives for so many different people. Fluke's addition of seven delicious cookie recipes make this debut even more worth it, as readers have the opportunity to experience some of Hannah's decadent desserts firsthand. A delectable debut!

3 out of 5 stars Nice, light read, tasty sounding recipes, poor character descriptions.......2007-03-07

The books in the series are a nice light read. The mysteries won't leave you scratching your head for very long unfortunately and frankly speaking as a person in the same age range as the main character, she is very dated. You can tell an older woman is writing a young character. Kinda reminds me of the clothes my mother would buy me or something, just not quite right for my age. As one example, Mike the heart throb love interest is described as having a mustache, um no one since Tom Seleck on Magnum P.I. has made a woman swoon while sporting a mustache. All in all the series is pleasant and fun, just keep telling yourself the books were copy righted from 1980-1985 instead of in the 2000's that should help make the characters seem more realistic and less cliche.

2 out of 5 stars sexist and shallow.......2005-07-25

I was disturbed by the portrait of the young self-injuring woman and her sexual behavior, not because she was depressed and sexually active, but of the way it was described. First off, many self-injurers (cutters) are NOT suicidal. They may be depressed and angry and abused, but cutting can be a way to hold on, not let go.

Secondly, no girl who has just been raped would "smile" and permit a couple other guys to rape her. I'm not saying she would or wouldn't resist, but she certainly wouldn't act as if the boys had just done something mildly offensive. Does the whole thought of rape turn the author on so he can honestly not imagine a girl enjoying it or at least pretend to? It seems so.

Also, I found the character of Colene rather bizarre. In one scene, she's writing to her imaginary horsie, the next she's performing a striptease and slicing up her arm. If a girl really had all those sexual experiences, she'd be too jaded to believe in imaginarry horses. Take it from a former young horse lover. No girl that extensively sexually abused/raped would care one way or another about imaginary horses - unless perhaps she was very young.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best books ever.......2003-12-25

I was completely unprepared for the depth of the main character in this book. Mr. Anthony writes as if he knows what it is really like to be this character. The adventures in the book are thrilling and they keep you interested. The writing assumes that the reader is intelligent and remains fascinating and page-turning from beginning to end.

3 out of 5 stars Not for me, but not intended to be, either.......2001-08-29

As a longtime fan of Piers Anthony, I wasn't overly impressed with this book, or the remainder of the series (although I haven't read it all yet, and I do intend to finish it). I didn't feel drawn into the characters, and the story itself didn't enthrall me. However, this may be mainly because I am not the target audience for this series; judging by other reader reviews I have read, adolescent females feel a very strong bond to the lead character, and the book seems to touch thier emotions on a very personal level. I feel this is one of Anthony's strengths, the ability to write very specifically to his audience, and reach them completely, even if this lowers the appeal for others. If you are not an adolescent female, or have not been one, this may not be the book for you. However, it may provide some insight into what motivates and interests today's female youth.

5 out of 5 stars A Darkly Glorious Book That Pulls Few Punches.......2001-05-13

I sympathize with the reviewer who said that the first few pages of _Virtual Mode_ turned them off of the book. I was given this novel as a gift when I was about eleven or so; I, too, read the opening passage and was disturbed into putting the book away, not touching it again for another year. Yet once I really began to read it, I found myself drawn into a grim reality where even the wonders of magic cannot compensate for the horrors of the human psyche.

I adore the protagonists: Colene, the mentally and emotionally twisted young woman whose attitudes and perceptions have been skewed almost beyond recognition; Darius, a man whose rigid sense of honor threatens to strangle his chances of happiness; Seqiro, Prima, and all the rest. Their conflicts and challenges may not be the stuff of epic fantasy, but they're interesting and can give one food for thought. Most moving of all, at least for me, was the exploration of Colene's emotions, history, and motivations. Anthony doesn't whitewash her situation: she's a deeply disturbed individual, and one who has cause to be that way.

I must admit, though, that as much as I love this book, I couldn't recommend that children--or possibly adolescents--read it without reservations. The folk who've said that it's full of sex are right; further, there's blood, vulgarity, remembered rape, and a host of other such things. While they add to the power of the story, they might (or might not) be considered inappropriate for younger readers. I doubt my mother would have gotten it for me when she did had she known what it was really about... but then, I didn't have any problems understanding it and certainly wasn't traumatized by it.

It's also true that the heroine is awfully young for all of the sexual situations she gets into, and that one could see the portrayal of women as sexist if one really wanted to do so. I personally read and enjoyed the story without worrying about such things, but I think that anyone who says _Virtual Mode_ shows sexism just may have a point. (Anthony *has* begun to disturb me in recent years with his fixation on the sexiness of very, very young women, but that's a subject better reserved for a Xanth review.) If such things offend you, you may wish to give this a skip.

Otherwise, I can say with enthusiasm that I feel _Virtual Mode_ to be a wonderful novel, one whose story and characters have stayed with me for years. Readers who enjoyed Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series may find this one especially appealing, as its resemblance to that saga seems much more pronounced than any to the perpetually punny Xanth.

    3 out of 5 stars Where's the end?.......2001-02-24

I was enthralled at the beginning of this book, the suicide and depression were all too interesting for me to put it down, but then as it progressed the techno talk baffled me and I was looking forward to the end where I hoped the happy ending would be that they reached Darius' home. A struggle for me as it was my first fantasy novel and was bitterly dissapointed that there was no ending, but thats the way it is in a series I guess!!

This is the third book in the "Virtual Mode" series and although I loved the first two, I really didn't like this one as much. Others might though.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but uneven.......2004-04-27

I just finished reading this book last night. I love the Xanth series and I enjoyed the first two books in this series. However, this book is not as good in my mind as the first two. The author spends quite a bit of time repeating what happened in the first two books. It is a series, it would be expected that people would have read them in order and know what was going on. Perhaps there was a long time between the 2nd and 3rd? I didn't check on this so am not sure. There were some very good parts and I did enjoy the interactions between the characters but it did get annoying to keep seeing Colene referred to as a "vessel of dolor". At least use different words once in a while. And it seemed like Colene's parents gave in to her relationship with Darius very easily. I know they were afraid of losing her again and Seqiro helped mentally, but she is only 14 and he is much older. All in all, it was good but seemed rushed. I would still recommend the series and am eagerly waiting to see what happens in DoOon Mode.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but not the best of the series.......2002-10-04

Anthony spends too much time in this book setting up scenery and action and although the characters interact, I don't get the sense that they care too much either way. Colene's science teacher introduction was good, but I can't understand why AFTER she was [forced to make love] she got a crush and started flirting with the teacher. And it was INCREDIBLY convenient that the one thing she remembers in biology has to do with Burgess. An ok read, but didn't make me jump out of my seat.

5 out of 5 stars Sad news folks..........2002-08-29

I have a version of Chaos Mode in which Mr. Anthony describes his reasons for discontinuing the mode series. Apparently, he got a lot of letters of complaint from parents stating that the relationship between Colene and Darius was innapropriate and too graphic. This may have caused the publisher to decide not to continue the series or maybe (and from the letter it sounds this way) Mr. Anthony was offended by all the criticism and decided to discontinue his work as a result of it. In any case, if you're interested I can scan and post the letter somewhere. Just thought you all might like to know.

5 out of 5 stars When's the next one coming out?.......2000-12-29

This series has been so good. Anyone who has ever been through hell as a teenager can identify with Colene. But when is Piers Anthony going to come out with the next book? He's left us hanging for far too long. I love the Xanth series, but it's time for a new Mode book!

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Research on animals has shown that injections of adrenal in paired with a learning experience improved memory retention. Adrenalin is a key hormone in emotional arousal and fight or flight responses. It stands to reason that emotional arousal (in moderation) may also have a positive impact on human learning. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the impact of emotional arousal on learning in virtual environments. An experiment was conducted to observe learning differences in a low-arousal condition and a high-arousal condition. A first-person shooter videogame (America's Army: Operations) was used as the virtual environment. In the low-arousal condition, participants wandered peacefully through a scenario memorizing objects they encountered. High-arousal participants wandered through the same environment, but were required to fight through the scenario while under attack. Results indicated that individuals in the high-arousal condition performed better on recall tasks immediately following the exposure and also 24 hours later.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Critical to the success of all future battlefield commanders is the rapid retrieval of relevant, time sensitive information. Some of this information will be available locally while the remainder is stored in the United States. DARPA's Battlefield Awareness and Data Dissemination (BADD) program attempts to deliver heterogeneous data to the battlefield using Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) protocol. ATM was originally designed to implement dynamic virtual channels over duplex, high-speed, high capacity fiber optic cabling. The problem addressed was to determine which algorithm best schedules calls on BADD's ATM network that uses static virtual channels over simplex, error prone, long delay, satellite links. Because the BADD project uses ATM in such an unusual way, and because of the need to determine a schedule for transmissions over the heterogeneous static channels, we modeled BADD using the state-of-the-art network simulation tool, Optimized Network Engineering Tools (OPNET). We determined several modifications that must be made to existing network simulators to allow them to model next-generation networks. Our simulation shows that a greedy algorithm yields a 53% decrease in the overall completion time and a 46% increase in average bit throughput over FIFO scheduling.

This is not Powers' best book. Quite the opposite, really. But it IS a fair, light read. I can't honestly recommend it to anyone but a hard-core Powers fan; his writing style does shine through at some points. If you see it used, pick it up, but do not base an opinion of Powers' writing on this book alone.

1 out of 5 stars An early work for completists only........1998-06-13

I've loved (or at least liked) all the other Powers books I've read, which is to say all but a few early ones. I finally found this in a used bookstore for $1, which is more than the story is worth. I honestly don't know how it got published it is so bad. It's not worth paying a lot for to complete your collection. Just keep an eye out if you have to have it.

                    1 out of 5 stars a bad book by a great author.......1998-04-11

This is a bad book by a great author. Do yourself a favor by reading other Powers books first. Then skip this one altogether.

3 out of 5 stars Tim Powers early & very unpolished work........1997-07-01

This was the first sale by Mr. Powers & it shows. It is generic space fantasy with just a few hints of why his fans love his writing now. Established fans may find it an interesting contrast to his current style and skill

                      Well thought out recipes.
                      Clear and easy directions.
Easy to find ingredients and many already on hand.
I only wish there was a photo of the finished recipe.

5 out of 5 stars The Hectic Chef's Best Friend.......2007-01-16

As an ocean going chef the "101" cookbook series is the chef/cook's best friend. I found a collection of these very handy cookbooks on my last ship and I knew I had to have my own copies. The ship was short handed and it ran out of basic cooking & baking supplies. These cookbooks gave excellent and simple meal preperation and desert ideas with the few supplies & staff we had on hand. It's all common sense but these ladies take the brain damage out of meal & desert planning. Most importantly, the crew was always satisfied. I'd recommend the series for the beginning cook or one that is short on time.

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner by Stephanie Ashcraft.......2004-12-06

Stephanie Ashcraft's mother taught her "that anything could be made with a cake mix." It does seem to be true. This tiny, easy-to-read cookbook has recipes for everything from Red Raspberry Dream Cake to Peaches and Cream Pudding Bars.

There are a few helpful hints on page 9 that teach you a few tricks about baking cakes, making chewier cookies and keeping fruit fresh. I've never used glass or stoneware baking dishes for cakes, so that is a new idea for me. I've been buying my cake pans from "Jane's Cakes & Chocolates." The results were rather stunning when I used the pans she sells.

What amazed me about this cookbook is the sheer simplicity of the recipes and the absolute beauty of the results.

Some of the recipes you might enjoy:

                      Orange Rolls
Sweet Banana Bread - only 4 ingredients
                      Butterscotch Chip Oatmeal Cookies
                      Blueberry Swirl Cake
                      Chewy Peanut Bars
                      Pumpkin Cheesecake

If you love this cookbook, try the first 101 Things to Do With a Cake Mix. I can highly recommend the recipe for Pistachio Pound Cake. It turned out to be "Moist, chocolaty, pistachio, dream cake." My relatives were impressed. It is not every day that I try a new recipe and then bravely take the cake to a party, but these books are winners. The ingredients are little more than a cake mix and a few ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

All I have left to say is, you will get requests for the cakes in this book. I look forward to trying more of the recipes as soon as I can get to the store to buy more cake mixes and instant puddings.

LOVE the binding on these cookbooks. Great to cook from and everyone loves the recipes. I just made the Pistachio Cake again this November.
