Henry Pierce is about to become very rich--as soon as his firm, Amedeo Technologies, gets an infusion of capital from a big backer. But the brilliant chemist's workaholic habits are disrupted when his lover, the former intelligence officer of his company, breaks up with him. Lonely and dispirited, he moves into a new apartment and gets a new phone number that attracts a lot of callers, but not for him. His new telephone number seems to have previously belonged to one Lilly Quinlan, an escort whose Internet photo arouses Henry's curiosity, especially when L.A. Darlings, whose Web page features the beautiful young woman, can't tell Henry how to find her. With the same single-mindedness that made him a high-tech superstar, Pierce pursues his search for the missing girl, motivated by his guilt over the disappearance years earlier of his own sister, who, like Lilly, was also a prostitute (and ultimately the victim of the Dollmaker, a serial killer from Connelly's 1994 novel The Concrete Blonde.) But that motive is too thin to support Pierce's sudden abandonment of his career at such a critical juncture, even if forces unknown to him are setting him up for a fall. Despite those holes in the plot and a less than compelling protagonist, the novel succeeds due to Connelly's literary and expository gifts and his more interesting secondary characters. --Jane Adams

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Page Turner.......2007-06-28

"Chasing the Dime" is a first rate page turner. Once I opened the book, it was very hard to put it down. The story grabbed me quickly and did not let go. Connelly's straightforward writing style flows well, and the story is both intriguing and well tied together.

The only weakness, as several reviewers have noted, is the idea that a genius high-tech executive in the throes of preparing for a huge investor presentation would take the time to seek out a prostitute whose phone number has been assigned to him. Once the reader accepts/ignores that weakness, however, the story is everything a reader could want.

This is my second Connelly novel. "The Lincoln Lawyer" was a bit better, but this one definitely holds its own. I am looking forward to more. Connelly and Nelson DeMille are, in my opinion, the two best writers in the market right now.

4 out of 5 stars A stand alone, solid plot and characters, a little boring at times.......2007-06-06

Chasing the Dime is a stand-alone thriller by Michael Connelly, author of the long-running LAPD Det. Harry Bosch series. Henry Pierce's company is on the verge of a technological breakthrough. At the same time, Henry has just moved out of the house he shared with Nicole. The phone number at his new apartment has a problem. It is also the phone number for an escort named Lilly. Pierce is at first bothered by the amazing amount of phone calls he receives for Lilly. He tries to contact Lilly to rectify the problem, and soon realizes the young, beautiful girl can't be found.

Henry juggles the looming deadline of a big presentation at work with the desparate efforts to find Lilly, an effort born out of a tragedy in his past. Against his better judgment, Henry digs deeper into Lilly's past and into the sex industry, where the money is big and the bad guys are life threatening. Henry fights to find out what happened to Lilly, reconcile his relationship with Nicole, and salvage his company.

Connelly's novels have never been page turners for me, yet I've found them highly enjoyable because of the characters and the complex plots. In Chasing the Dime, you won't find Harry Bosch, although he is referenced at one time. As a stand alone, Chasing the Dime is a must read for Connelly fans. He depicts the true life tragedy involved in the life of an escort. The novel does seems slow at times, expecially during the lengthy explanations of how Henry's technology firm works.

If your new to Connelly, you'll probably enjoy this book. For me, Connelly doesn't seem overwhelming, but over time, his novels become highly addicting and compelling. Connelly is one of the best.

3 out of 5 stars not up to snuff.......2007-03-30

I wouldn't say this was bad but it was disappointing. It didn't have the Connorly book's usual page turning intensity. It lacked the colorful characterzation one generally finds in the Harry Bosch series. Seems like he wrote this one on his vacation.

5 out of 5 stars If you can't find it anywhere...........2007-03-13

After chasing around town and various libraries, I finally thought to check on Amazon Books and there it was. I am an avid fan of Michael Connelly's books and Chasing The Dime was the one book I had not read and could not seem to find. It is another great 'Bosch' read. Thank you Amazon for having older books available!

2 out of 5 stars Not up to Connelly's usual standards.......2007-02-26

There were a lot of things about this book that I found irritating - the title, the contrived plot, the relationship with his ex-girlfriend, the fact that a computer genius that uses dial-up...stick with the Harry Bosch series.

1 out of 5 stars Has Connelly lost his touch since he moved to Florida?.......2006-06-03

I was distressed to see Connelly has moved from LA to Florida! What's up with that? Chasing the Dime is not up to his former thrillers...it's hokey. First of all, I didn't find the plot line plausible and I didn't like any of the characters, especially the protagonist, Henry. What an unsympathetic, whiny guy! I hope this doesn't mean the end of Harry Bosch. Am also curious as to what's going on in the author's life that he would write such a voyeristic, prurient, ill-contrived, silly book about a guy you just don't care about. I would love to hear from other readers in this column. In the meantime, I'm rereading my Bosch's.

                  Book Description

                  Plato started it.

Plato was the one who first reported the existence of a vast island with immense mountains, verdant valleys and fruit "fair and wondrous and in infinite abundance." This magnificent Aegean Eden surrounded a capital of fabulous stone buildings, a busy, bustling heaven on earth.

And then, the Cataclysm. Panic spread across the island as Atlantis's volcano shook off its long dormancy. The mountain erupted, and the island was overwhelmed, engulfed. The sea smoothed over, and the continent and its occupants were gone forever.

                  Or were they?

Enter Robert Sullivan, who first rose to international prominence with his breakthrough research on Santa Claus. In Atlantis Rising, Sullivan reveals evidence even more startling than that contained in his myth-shattering Flight of the Reindeer: The True Story of Santa Claus and His Christmas Mission. Set upon his Atlantean quest by Amos S. Eno, executive director of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and lured further and further on by the mysterious oceanographer who calls himself "Atwater," Sullivan is able to separate historical truth from mere legend, fact from fiction, science from silliness. Delving into the historical record, then into secret files that have long been under lock and key at the famous Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, he discovers rare transcripts, documents, maps and, incredibly, photographs. They are all here in Atlantis Rising, along with dozens of paintings by the renowned natural-history artist Glenn Wolff. It adds up to an astonishing tale and a powerful moral.

                  Atlantis lives.

                  5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story.......2003-01-24

What a great story. Obviously well researched and extremely well presented. I stayed up all night reading this I was so captivated.
Buyer beware, this is not a "true story" as the title states (although after reading you're sure to be convinced otherwise). The is a fantastic piece of fiction heavily rooted in fact.
I absolutely encourage you to pick this up, you won't be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars This is not a true story!.......2003-01-04

I felt being tricked for reading this book. I found it in a local library. When I read the cover, it says " the true story...." So I thought that I will read it.

The story is interesting and fun to read. However, after I finished the whole book, and turned to the last page, it has "This book is a work of fiction."

well, if it is not true, why did you put it on the cover to make me think that I am actually reading a book about the real story of Atlantis?!

Therefore, I gave it a rating of 1 star.

                  5 out of 5 stars Atlantis Lives.......2001-02-13

It was a joy to read this book. Well researched and with beautiful illustrations the book caught my imagination. It doesn't matter whether you are a believer or not... The book is interesting to all. It can be read as fiction - or as a pertinent theory on Atlantis. It doesn't hurt that with the new Disney movie coming up - it gives me some information to share with my kids when the questions on Atlantis come up.

                  4 out of 5 stars A perception of Atlantis.......2000-09-03

I truly enjoyed this book. Robert Sullivan provided wonderful photos and historical knowledge of Atlantis in the form of a journal/story. There are questions left unanswered as well as interesting data presented. To believe it is another question. Objectively, I would like to research it myself as many others are probably doing. I enjoyed reading the book because of my interest in Atlantis and the mystery connections. It reads like a pleasant science fiction story with perhaps some truth to it. The book was appealing because it was presented well artistically and it caught my eye. Reading was also a pleasure well suited to someone with a general interest in Atlantis.

5 out of 5 stars Made my heart sing!.......1999-12-30

This book is amazingly informative and a visual delight. The author did an incredible job of researching Atlantis and presenting all the pertinent facts. The drawings and photo layouts further the beauty and information exchange. I recommend this highly book to adults and kids. Enjoy!

                      Book Description

This is the sixth book in Creation's highly-acclaimed Persistence of Vision film book series. Alejandro Jodorowsky remains one of cinema's most controversial and influential film-makers. In 1968 his scandalous debut, Fando & Lis, caused a riot in Mexico, forcing the Chilean-born director into exile in France. The following year, his ultra-violent underground smash hit El Topo inagurated the Midnight Movie phenomenon, transforming its creator into a counter-culture icon championed by John Lennon and, latterly, Marilyn Manson. Anarchy and Alchemy features • Exclusive interviews • Rare images • Exhaustive chapters on all Jodorowsky's films including the mesmerising cine-trip The Holy Mountain, the award-winning Oedipal circus show Santa Sangre • The aborted Dune project with Salvador Dali, Pink Floyd and H R Giger • Texts on Jodorowsky's 60s terror-theatre outfit The Panic Movement • His world mime tour with Marcel Marceau • His graphic novel collaborations with Moebius

Powerful. Enjoyable. Thoughtful. Fascinating. Funny. Gifted. First-Rate. Original.
Nine stories that show us the future of man, with his flaws, his merits and his outward spread from Earth. John Varley thinks big also. In many of his stories it is pointed out that mankind was kicked off of the planet Earth by...somebody.
See, that is the best part. Many of the stories happen in a setting in which much of the background is unknown to us or just hinted at. But the heart of the stories are always people, their emotions and needs. Some sex too.
Many of the short stories were later used to create some very interesting movies.

Have you ever, sometime in your life, by any chance, heard of the multi-multi-multi-million copy bestselling author Tom Clancy? Well, when HE wants to be entertained by thoughtful, visionary, intelligent works of fiction -- which generally feature significantly fewer gratuitous explosions than his own work -- then he turns to one of his personal favorite authors, John Varley. "Persistence of Vision," in my humble opinion, is probably Varley's most accessible, yet amazing book.

The stories all feature characters in a remote future, in which everything about the human body, and everything about human society, is completely mutable and within the ability of individuals to choose for themselves. John Varley writes about sympathetic human beings, dealing with what seem to them to be fairly run-of-the-mill problems. To you or me, however, everything about the lives of these characters is simply awe-inspiring... Here you will meet lonely spacemen dwelling at the outer reaches of the solar system; sociological musings on the long-lost institution of the "nuclear family," by future, human inhabitants of Mercury; conversations between an explorer/composer and his alien symbiote, amongst the rings of Saturn; and much, much more. The last tale in the volume, the one the book is named after, is particularly memorable. It features a man who becomes part of a colony of deaf-mute-blind people, who have developed a highly spiritual means of communicating. That story is the most profound one in this collection, but they are all stirring. I highly recommend reading "The Persistence of Vision." Two thumbs up.

Short stories are many, yet few good inbetween. This is by far the best out of one person put all in one book I have ever read in all my years of run on sentences of my own, not his. The depth and sincerity of the heroes/heroines brings it all home. You're there, the only place Varley wants you to be. I would rate this his best, but I am also biased. I love ALL his work. I recommend them all aslo.

                      5 out of 5 stars mind-expanding fiction!.......1999-08-10

I'm so glad that I happened upon this book. Not only are the stories fascinating and interesting throughout, but they also have such an awesome vision of life and of people-- and although most of the stories take place in the future, the vision really is timeless. Varley understands so many things that just aren't understood, he thinks about things that just aren't thought about, and writes so well that it all (his thoughts) seems so normal (and it is)... this book is definitely mind-expanding.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth seaching for.......1999-04-28

A friend recommended this to me, and amazingly my local used bookstore had a hardcover copy! These are some of the BEST short stories I have read! Right up there with Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. There is not one clinker in the bunch. Especially liked Phantom of Kansas, Hall of the Martian Kings, The Persistance of Vision. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank was quirky and fun. (I also saw a low-budget movie version on the Sci-Fi Channel) Air Raid seems to be a precursor to Millenium.

If you happen to see a copy of this, grab it fast! You won't be sorry.

This is a book about how to produce a high quality feature film on a budget of less than $30,000. The authors start out by saying "Buying this book was your first mistake" and go on to explain the first two tenets of their philosophy: 1) Never pay full price for anything, and 2) Never ever buy what you can borrow or get for free. Their points are well taken, and I don't mean to be disagreeable, but I think this book is still worth buying. Filled with good humor and healthy skepticism about commonly held beliefs and instructions for potential filmmakers, this is a book any would-be movie maker would do well to read. While debunking many myths and misconceptions about making films, it is not a dry manual, but rather, a realistic how-to book written by two guys who know what they are talking about from personal experience, including their admitted mistakes. I never gave filmmaking a thought previously, but now? Maybe. Could happen.

While this is still a good book and certainly has reafirmed my desire to see what I have created on screen the Impractical guide is showing its age a little.

My main problem with the text is the way they dismissed video out of hand, and thus little of what they have written pertains to digital film creation. The modern indy film maker will be well versed in the film vs digital dilemma, when this was written that didn't even seen to be an issue.

However it also details with finding actors, crew and resources and all the other fundimentals of pulling together whatever you can find to make your picture.

I own about 20 books on filmaking, and this book is very good, probably the best out of the 20. The writers of the book have made a couple of film features (not digital), and they detail everything that they did in the process. Robert Rodriguez's book "rebel without a crew" is a very, very inspirational book. But this book explains every step in the process from starting out writing, to making a camera dolly for $80, to using the canadian exchange rates to your advantage. I got the book used here on amazon for $15. Buy the book, then write a review here, and then go out and make your film!

4 out of 5 stars Decent, but way overpriced.......2001-03-09

There's enough practical information here that you could probably go out and do it - the only meaningful test for a how-to book. But the pages are small, the type is large, the filler is plentiful, and the cover price is exorbitant. Your call.

                        4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile.......1999-12-27

I've read this book and have found it quite useful - I'm using it as the starting point for my own forays in this area - and the best thing I can say about it is the spirit it engenders. There are probley a million ways to make a film but you'll never make one unless you believe you can - and this book by showing you very effecive means goes along way into making you believe you can. It's quite comprehensive and goes into good detail though I wouldn't say it was the last word on film-making but then nor does it - and that's not the point because it gives you enough to not just get started with but to make an actual film with - and whatever more you want or need you're natural learning and further exploration will take you to. I reccomend it.

                            Book Description

Jean Genet, the French author notorious for his overt cele-bration of criminality and homosexuality, was also fascinated with cinema.

                            ??

His only film, Un Chant d'amour, made in 1950, was a poetic and sexually explicit visual paean to homosexual desire, the criminal impulse, and the power of the imagination. Banned on the grounds of obscenity, the film has since become a cause celebre of gay rights and freedom of expression, as well as being recognized as a masterpiece of underground cinema.

                            ??

Criminal Desires contains complete documentation of the making of Un Chant d'amour, including an illustrated shot-by-shot description, thematic analysis, and exhibition history.

                            ??

                            The book also documents:
? Genet's many other unfilmed screenplays.
? Film appearances by Genet himself.
? Screen adaptations of Genet's work made by other directors including Deathwatch, The Maids, Todd Haynes' 1, and Fassbinder's extraordinary and apocalyptic vision of Querelle.

                            ??

Illustrated throughout and featuring an introduction by acclaimed novelist and Genet biographer, Edmund White, Criminal Desires is a compelling induction into Jean Genet's underworld of prisons, voyeurism, and homosexual lust which starkly illuminates a fascinating zone of forbidden cinema.

                            ??

Jean Genet is a world-famous author and gay hero: This is the only book dealing specifically with his involvement with, and relationship to, cinema.

                              Book Description

The Vienna Action Group formed the most provocative, insurgent, and challenging of all the worldwide art movements of the 1960s. Their sexually charged and antisocial actions exacted a profound and irreparable upheaval in the way in which art was conceived. Using their own bodies as raw material, the Action Group undertook experiments in cruelty that disassembled the human body and its acts into compacted gestures of blood, semen, and meat.

The films of the Vienna Action Group form the essential residue, debris, and evidence of their performances. For the first time, this book focuses on those films as fully revealing the obsessions, ambitions, and outrages of the Action Group. Fully illustrated and annotated, this is a book of compelling interest to all students of film, art, and performance, and for all readers engaged with questioning social and corporate cultures.

Clint Eastwood represents probably the single strongest icon of heroic masculinity in popular cinema over the past quarter-century. But how odd that, through ironic allusion and gesture, this figure seems continually to deconstruct its own stature. Such problems form the foundation for Bill Beard's examination of Eastwood. Director, producer, and star, Eastwood has become one of the most important figures in American cinema today. This collection of linked essays examines Eastwood's unique position as overpowering cinematic icon and creative filmmaker; as reflector, perpetuator, and even producer of mainstream cultural and ideological values; and as idiosyncratic, complex manipulator of the narrative he inhabits.

Kenneth Anger: author of Hollywood Babylon, true disciple of Aleister Crowley, former mentor to both Bobby Beausoleil and Mick Jagger, amongst others - and almost certainly the most original and talented film-maker of the 20th Century.

                                ??

Moonchild presents revelatory texts on the occult, mind-altering, homo-erotic, synaesthetic and pop-culture tropes to be found within such classic underground films as Fireworks, Inauguration Of The Pleasure Dome, Scorpio Rising, Invocation Of My Demon Brother, and Lucifer Rising. Contributors inclue Mikita Brottman (author of Hollywood Hex) and Jack Sargeant (author of Deathtripping and Naked Lens).

Accompanied by a host of opulent film images, a filmography and quotes from Anger himself, Moonchild is the definitive study of one of cinema's most charismatic yet elusive innovators.

Simply put, Moonchild is the most comprehensive, insightful book dealing with the genius of Kenneth Anger, avant-garde filmmaker and modern day magus. Dealing with themes throughout Anger's Magick Lantern Cycle such as myth and symbolism as well as the occult, clearly laying out their profound importance within the Anger oeuvre, Moonchild should be purchased by anyone wanting to gain true insight into the mind of Anger - what a frighteningly beautiful place - as well as a deeper understanding of his films and their highly complex, fine-tuned structures. A must have.

Spiralling out of the Surrealist movement alongside the art, photography and manifestos, were a number of experimental films, notably Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel's Un Chien Andalou and L'Age d'Or. The Age of Gold revisits these two seminal films and explores their making, themes and images, the scandal and riots that accompanied their release, and their impact and influence on modern-day cinema.

Fully illustrated throughout, The Age of Gold also documents the cinematic theories of Antonin Artaud and traces the parallels in avant-garde and Dadaist film-including the work of Hans Richter, Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray.

Robert Short is a lecturer at the -University of East Anglia, England. Previous publications include Hans Bellmer, Surrealism: Permanent Revelation and Dada & Surrealism.

My mommy is jamaican and the books is ok. It has some of my favorite meals and deserts. But it does not have the curry goat recipie ! It does have oxtail, lamb, roti(thank goodness), pati and more. The book does a great job on explaining the history of the food, people and culture of jamaica. From the Maroons and the famous jerk chicken (by the way that recipie is in there) and the various influence of other cultures (india). Its worth buying..but still looking for a giant recipie book of the down home food from JA. Perhaps I'll have to write it! If its out there already someone please let me know.

As a native of Jamaica I knew exactly what to look for in this book. Although this book contained many wonderful recipes from my country I was dismayed to find that it did not contain the recepe for Jamaican rum cake or any kind of fruit cake recipes. This cake is a tradition in most Jamaican households during the Christmas holidays and is very popular at weddings. A Jamaican wedding is not complete without rum cake or fruit cake.I hope the author will take this into consideration when writing the international edition.
