Book Description

Denver homicide detective Cliff Janeway may not always play by the book, but he is an avid collector of rare and first editions. After a local bookscout is killed on his turf, Janeway would like nothing better than to rearrange the suspect's spine. But the suspect, local lowlife Jackie Newton, is a master at eluding the law, and Janeway's wrathful brand of off-duty justice costs him his badge.

Turning to his lifelong passion, Janeway opens a small bookshop -- all the while searching for evidence to put Newton away. But when prized volumes in a highly sought-after collection begin to appear, so do dead bodies. Now, Janeway's life is about to start a precarious new chapter as he attempts to find out who's dealing death along with vintage Chandlers and Twains.

5 out of 5 stars Great! Great! Great!.......2007-10-10

I loved it. Engaging storyline, interesting characters, classic murder-mystery and suspense. I've already started his next one.

5 out of 5 stars Books plus Murder.......2007-10-09

Cliff Janeway strikes a great star for both bibliophiles and mystery fans. John Dunning's retired cop turned detective by way of an used bookshop in BOOKED TO DIE makes readers pay attention from the first line. The sold-out first printing established Dunning as a voice in the world of mysteries.
Books are secondary to great story telling power. It is the thrill of the hunt that drives Janeway into the moldy bargain basements looking for something special. Vintage books from a desirable estate collection appear on the market, but bodies proliferate and command attention.
This is a fine beginning for a classic series where readers can both enjoy and relish a new world away from spiffy mega-seller of books.
Nash Black, author of SINS OF THE FATHERS and TRAVELERS.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!.......2007-09-13

Once in a very long while I find a book and a series that grabs me right off the bat, and this book did that for me. Dunning is a wonderful writer. His characters are real, his dialogue crisp and the plot is tight. I could not put this book down once I started it. Cliff Janeway is an ex-cop that becomes an antiquarian book dealer. The references to fine literature and wonderful books was enough to really hook a bibliophile like me. And the mystery and story that came along with the lesson on book buying was wonderful too. This is a book that is from the hard-boiled genre, but the references to the books tempered that a bit. Dunning's characters are so very real, but the piece de resistance is Janeway himself. He's a tough, no-nonsense kind of guy, but with a softer side. He is always looking out for the underdog and the weaker sex if he finds them in trouble, and he makes it his personal business to rectify the wrongs that are bothering these people. He's intelligent, witty and sharp. I simply can't wait to read the next book!

4 out of 5 stars Fun and educational........2007-05-19

I really liked this one. I've read a few of the Cliff Janeway novels, and this is by far my favorite one. For those of you who don't know, Cliff Janeway, the main character of this series, is a cop turned book scout, who still spends some of his time solving mysteries. I think what I liked most about it was all the references to different books that Janeway comes upon. It made me want to look into many of them further. If you enjoy browsing through bookstores, you will probably get a kick out of these novels.

5 out of 5 stars The start of a great and unusual murder mystery series .......2007-02-02

After reading this finely crafted mystery, you will never look at 'books' the same way again! The author knows his books and book values, and takes the reader deeply into his world. I have now read the first five books in this series, and they just keep getting better. Unpredictable, with interesting characters that you begin to see and care about (or dislike) as real people. My wife and I are voracious readers, and as a side item, I actually cancelled my long-time book club memberships - will buy all future books that I may keep as First Editions at my local bookstores. Read this book to find out why!

    Book Description

Together for the first time in a single volume -- the two critically acclaimed Bookman crime novels that helped inspire America's passion for modern first-edition book collecting and that belong on every bookshelf.

Includes "The Book Collector," advice and special tips from John Dunning on collecting rare books.

    BOOKED TO DIE

Denver cop Cliff Janeway probably knows as much about books as he does about homicide. His living room resembles an adjunct to the public library. He's aware that some Stephen King first editions can bring more money than most Mark Twain firsts, and a copy of Raymond Chandler's Lady in the Lake is worth more than $1,000. And he realizes that, contrary to popular belief, "older" doesn't necessarily mean "more valuable."

He also knows that valuable volumes can be hidden in plain view among otherwise ordinary book collections. It's not easy to find such books, but some people seem to have an extraordinary talent for honing in on the treasures.

Such a man is bookscout Bobby Westfall. Bobby once earned $900 in a single weekend and has generally spotted enough valuable books to keep himself and his beloved cats fed and housed.

Now Bobby is dead, murdered at the witching hour on Friday the thirteenth, his body dumped under a ladder in a dark alley. It's not a good end for a superstitious man. Janeway is sure he knows who did it. But can he catch him? And, in the process, will Janeway's own life change forever?

    THE BOOKMAN'S WAKE

The story starts and ends, aptly, with a very special book: a 1969 edition of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven, published by the tiny, prestigious Grayson Press of North Bend, Washington. The Grayson bibliography mentions no such edition. If, indeed, it exists, it could be worth a fortune to the right collector. It's the kind of book somebody might kill for. In fact, somebody probably already has.

Ex-Denver cop Janeway is happily at work selling rare and used books when former police colleague Clydell Slater arrives with an offer. Slater runs a detective agency and he wants Janeway to go to Seattle to pick up a young female fugitive and deliver her to Taos, New Mexico. The woman is wanted for burglary and assault. More to the point, as far as Janeway's concerned, she may also have in her possession a stolen copy of the 1969 Grayson Press Raven, taken when she ransacked a Taos home.

The rare-book angle gets to Janeway every time. He could turn down thousands of dollars in fees, but he can't say no to The Raven.

Janeway signs on to the case because of a book, but he stays because of a vulnerable young woman. He will discover not only her painful story but the poignant tale of a once-great small press, where paper and ink became beautiful books in the hands of a master craftsman.

3 out of 5 stars Classes in Book Collecting.......2007-09-23

While BOOKED TO DIE and it's immediate follow-up BOOKMAN'S WAKE are not particularly colorful or memorable they give the outsider painless lessons in book collecting. If you think that collectable books are only the old and battered ones, you definitely need to read these books. If you've never heard of a book scout, who knows... you may discover your next career.

The author is a servicable writer with a disciplined style. The characters are little more than sketches. The stories about a crime-solving rare books dealer move along but not at a heart-pounding pace. The motives are based on the dynamics of book collecting -- and how dynamic can that be?

The first is set in Denver -- the author's home town. The second is set in my home town of Seattle. Not much of a sense of the two environments emerge. It's like seeing the world from the window of a bookstore. And for some of us, that's just fine.

4 out of 5 stars Great Diversion for Bookmen & Librarians.......2007-02-07

Both of these detective stories have received loud kudos as genre fiction. For me the real delight is in the wealth of accurate booklore of the antiquarian book trade that they contain. The stories are certainly page-turners and tightly plotted (The Bookman's Wake is a little byzantine at times with some contrived tension-building delays). The book trade and bookstore atmosphere, however, is so authentic that the line between factual information and cleverly constructed fictional situation is intriguingly blurry!

4 out of 5 stars John Dunning's Booked to Die and Bookman's Wake.......2006-11-10

Dunnings style and easy reading vocabulary make his books great relaxing and interesting material. He is fast becoming one of my favorite authors and I highly recommend his work.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Stories.......2006-07-27

I've always loved being told or reading good stories, and these are good ones.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Intro to the "Bookman" series.......2006-07-11

I was told about Dunning's mystery series by a good friend -- and fellow book lover -- and found this omnibus edition of the first two novels a great way to get a feel for the author's storytelling skills (they're remarkable), the main character's back story (it's quite interesting), and read two interesting mysteries involving one of my favorite pastimes -- browsing for treasures in used bookstores. Dunning is obviously quite knowledgeable about the used book market, and he has written a gritty, engrossing, and at times amusing account of the trials and travails of Cliff Janeway, a former cop turned used book seller. If you are in anyway interested in books -- as a reader and as a collector -- this series is sure to please and certain to provide hours of edification of the fine, wonderful, world of owning collectable books.

    About these two novels . . .
Dunning's first novel, Booked to Die introduces us to his indominable lead character, Cliff Janeway. He's a tough, honest, principled cop in Denver who has a passion for collecting books and a long-standing personal vendetta against a local thug, Jackie Newton. When a local vagrant is found beaten to death, Jackie Newton appears to be the most likely suspect, but Janeway finds he's unable prove anything. After a violent clash with Newton, Janeway realizes that his career as a cop is over, and decides to open a used bookstore. Janeway is happy and even hires a young woman to be his assistant, Miss Pride. But, his comfortable complaciency is suddenly shattered when Janeway discovers Miss Pride and a ne'r-do-well bookscout summarily executed in his store, and he's certain that Newton's behind it.
In a good mystery, nothing is ever as simple as it seems on page 200 . . . By the end of the novel, Janeway cleverly discovers who was behind the brutal deaths of three people and why, and even more importantly, he has won this reader's admiration as a top-notch, cop-turned-bookseller that you want to get to know even better.
Which is why this volume is such a treat. Finish one novel and there's a second one immediately after it. In The Bookman's Wake, Janeway must stay several steps ahead of a murderous thug who is after a previously unknown rare, limited edition of The Raven, by Edgar A. Poe. This novel is a vivd portrayal of genius turn to murderous hubris. The high-stakes risks taken by Janeway and his associates are duly rewarded in the end, and the reader of this novel will be, too.

Once there were three Worlds, each with its own human species. Then, fleeing out of the void came a fourth species, the Charon. Desperate and on the edge of extinction, they shifted the balance between the Worlds forever. Now Karan, a young Sensitive who carries the blood of all three Worlds, has come into possession of the Mirror of Aachen, which holds the power to heal-or destroy-World relations. But as war rages, Tensor, the leader of the Aachim people, steals the mirror and flees into the wilderness with the lovely young Chronicler, Llian, leaving all to wonder how they plan to use their powerful new magic.

2 out of 5 stars formulaic -- chock full of lame-ass, improbable romance.......2006-03-15

Here's this book in a nutshell:

Be chased by bad guys. Feel safe. Oh no! Realize that bad guys are on your trail again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Throw in a few interesting ideas, and then add a dash of the most improbable romance you can conceive.

Why did I give this book 2 stars? There is a sinister magic to this series. Despite my critiques, I continue to read. Why can't I stop?

                  5 out of 5 stars I'm still interested!.......2004-01-12

I'm by no means a fanasy fanatic, but after stumbling across this series, I'm beginning to consider myself one. The first book takes you to a land that, dare I say, mixes science fiction and fantasy together and thoroughly immerses you in it's detail. The idea behind the books is extremely original considering that fantasy has become a genre that never seems to run dry in terms of new settings. An extremely enjoyable and worthwhile read.

                  4 out of 5 stars Improving.......2003-05-10

I read the first book in the series with a slightly jaundiced eye. While passably written, it lacked freshness and I felt too bogged down in the details of the differences between the different human races.

Things improved noticably in this second book for me. There was less exposition and more focus on the characters. Particularly intriguing is the Yggur/Maigraith relationship-- I am genuinely curious to see where that goes.

I still did not like Karan (the main character), which makes it more challenging to like the book. Still, I am in more of a hurry to buy the third book then I was to buy the second.

This is the second book of The View from the Mirror (after A Shadow on the Glass and before Dark Is the Moon and The Way Between the Worlds).

Yggur's army is now marching on the city of Thurkad, and after Tensor's treacherous attack of the Conclave, all parties spread in different directions.

Tensor, the leader of the Aachim, steals the Mirror and kidnaps Llian, believing the Chronicler might prove useful in his scheme to use the artifact. Since the city of Shazmak has been destroyed by Yggur's Whelm become Ghâshâd, the now homeless Aachim are forced to flee North, towards the Dry Sea.

Mendark the former magister, along with his guard Osseion, his lieutenant Tallia and the young girl Lilis try to escape through the underground network of Thurkad, which has just capitulated. With the help of Pender and his boat, they sail to Zile, an old city famous for its Great Library.

Llian believes Karan dead, but the young Sensitive woman is soon rescued from the ruins of the Conclave by Shand, and takes refuge in the wharf city of Thurkad while the mysterious old man is looking for help. Karan is terribly worried about Llian, whom she realize she's fallen in love with. Her sole idea is to deliver him from the clutches of Tensor.

Maigraith, saved by her Faellem liege Faellamor, is brought to Yggur, whom she'll seduce.

In this volume, after yet other interminable pursuits through tunnels and over seas and salt deserts, all parties converge again towards the much conveted Mirror of Aachim, for a final conflagration in the Tower of Katazza. But whereas the characters are likeable, and the story gained a little in complexity, I didn't find it very passionating or attention-catching, and in the end my mind was often wandering elsewhere.

This is really wonderful Sci-Fi. Ordinarily, I am not a fan of the genre but Empey gets inside the characters and makes them come alive. I highly recommend this must read!

It's not that Matt Ronay, the protagonist of this novel, is weightless; it's just that he lives on the Moon, and he has the ability to flow gracefully through the low gravity. There's a figurative weightless to the story as well, that of Ronay's life and decisions he faces growing up as an adolescent in lunar society. Ronay, a brilliant youth, takes a trip to distant city, acts in theater and dreams of flight to far-off worlds. His father, a leader in lunar politics, doesn't always understand, though he may have had some of the same yearnings as his son. This imaginative novel won the 1994 Philip K. Dick Award.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2004-09-23

I just read this book recently and loved it. I'm amazed people haven't been collaring me and saying "Have you read Growing Up Weightless yet? It's fantastic!" It's the sort of book that ought to have a cult following.

It isn't really a coming of age book, it's more complicated than that. A lot goes on around the edges, and much that you think is important, isn't. This book is best read, in my opinion, in one or two sittings where you are really paying attention, and taking five minutes to process and then turning around and rereading to see what bits you missed the first time isn't out of place, and is well-rewarded.

3 out of 5 stars Good setup, but poor ending.......2004-06-03

I have to add my voice to those that say that this book ends too abruptly. The book starts well, and has a deeply rich and interesting background to work with, but the ending comes on very suddenly, and many elements of the plot are left undeveloped.

The book makes more sense if read as a sort of diary, wandering from one protagonist to another. If that was the author's intent, it could have been communicated more effectively. As it is, as a reader I thought it would be a standard plot with most of the elements and story arcs resolved at the end. Instead, it ends rather quickly, with most side-plots left hanging. This feels unnatural in a novel, even though "real life" is like that.

4 out of 5 stars More of Ford's good work.......2001-11-08

This book is out of print, but still available if you know where to look. John M. Ford's award winning "Growing Up Weightless" is a familiar theme for him: coming-of-age during a period of change in society. His version of Lunar society owes some debts to previous stories including Heinlein's 'The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress,' but has developed in ways that may surprise you.

As usual, his story is multi-layered, and requires an intelligent reader to decipher the hints and allusions that Ford places throughout the text. Those who want active, clearly described plots should look elsewhere - but those who prefer not to be condescended to and enjoy puzzling out a story would enjoy this novel.

Ford never descends to the device of having characters explain something to each other that they would obviously already know, i.e. "As you know, George, a light bulb is a luminescent device powered by electricity that creates light in dark areas." For science fiction in particular, I find this very refreshing.

Finally, Ford's teenagers are active, thinking kids with dreams and desires. If they are very bright, they also seem very real to me.

It's worth finding a copy of this book. Better still, it would be worth bringing back into print.

5 out of 5 stars Realized its power years after the last page.......2000-11-28

I read this book when I was too young to fully understand the complexity of the main character's decision about his future. When I started to go through the same sorts of choices, I found myself haunted by the book, even though I had finished it years ago. The most powerful scene for me is the mother's farewell. Even at the time it made me cry; now it is one of those scenes I use as an example to myself of what good writing really is. Thank you John M. Ford for a very moving experience!

                    5 out of 5 stars A moon-dreamer's classic.......2000-01-22

I cannot imagine why Growing Up Weightless is not in print. I was on the jury that picked it for the P.K. Dick award, and since reading it I have always felt that it describes life on the Moon as it should and must be.

                      Book Description

From the award-winning authors of Bread In Half The Time comes a complete guide to close to a hundred European-style breads to bake with the indispensable aid of your bread machine.

Nothing smells quite as wonderful as bread baking in the oven. Nothing tastes quite as good as a thick slice of still-warm homemade bread. And nothing can be quite so intimidating or time-consuming as mixing, kneading, raising, and baking that bread. Until now!

With a bread machine to do all the hard work, and experts Linda West Eckhardt and Diana Collingwood Butts as guides, anyone can turn out a perfect sourdough, raisin pumpernickel, focaccia, or any one of almost a hundred other varieties of classic European breads. The trick is to use the machine for what it does best-mixing and kneading the dough that produces the loaves we all love so much. Then leave it in the machine to rise, shape it by hand, and bake it to perfection in the oven.

With Rustic European Breads From Your Bread Machine in hand, every home cook will become a master baker. Eckhardt and Butts provide not only an encyclopedic knowledge of their subject and foolproof step-by-step recipes, but also limitless, contagious enthusiasm. Their clear and thorough explanations will turn every home kitchen into an aromatic, soul- and appetite-satisfying European bakery.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2006-01-22

This book has many great recipes and they are pretty easy to do!

4 out of 5 stars A must read for people wanting to make good bread.......2006-01-18

Bread machines rule. But let's face it, after a few loaves you realize the thing basically makes a similar loaf almost every time. There are recipes to let the machine do everything. But you will want to be a better baker, and that is where this book shines.

The pattern of the recipes are: make a starter or "sponge" using the Dough cycle. Let the starter sit 2 hour to 3-5 days. (Yes there is a sourdough recipe). Process the dough again in the machine on the Dough setting, then shape the dough and bake in your oven on your stone. Really, this is the best way to make really good bread, unique bread, all the time.

The book covers everything you need to know to make bread at home. This is from the water to use to the different types of flour, to the equipment, to recipes just for starter doughs.

So what bugs me about the book? The authors include an excellent section on preparing starters. But many of the recipes have their own starter included. They don't give you alternate ingredient volumes to use if you have a starter from a previous batch of bread. Also, there aren't very many differnt types of easier whole wheat breads. The book focuses on variety but I would have preferred focusing on several types of breads that don't need exotic shapes or equipment.

5 out of 5 stars These recipes really work! Artisan bread by bread machine........2005-06-21

When you have exhausted all bread machine recipes, you get bored with the same kind of bread and eventually stop making bread... Well, if that is what's happening to you, try any recipe in this book!

I tried several recipes from this book, and they all came out like pro's. Rustic, chewy, and unlike many bread-machine breads, my bread tasted very good even after a few days. The recipes are quite simple, but it is more than measuring ingredients and pressing button. Still, even for a complete beginner (I just got my first machine a couple weeks ago), he/she can enjoy the process and the outcome!

Hightly recommended for any level of bakers.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, techniques for texture.......2004-10-20

I love this book. I own two other bread making books, and this is my favorite. The other books give little antecdotes followed by a recipe, but they don't explain anything. This book has a lot of useful information on obtaining the perfect texture (creamy yet airy) and a chewy crust. My bread also rises better than it used to. And thanks to this book, my starters are finally working. I agree with the reviewer who said that the techniques discussed in the beginning of the book are not reiterated in the recipes, but they are straight forward enough to keep in mind.

5 out of 5 stars Re-Discover the Joys of Hot Fresh Quality Bread.......2003-11-21

After using my bread machine extensively for several years, the novelty of fresh hot bread had sort of worn off (imagine that). After visiting Europe, I really wanted to be able to eat the types of breads I ate there, but didn't know how to make them and didn't want to pay the high price here for specialty breads. This book is fun, informative, and has great recipes. If some of the other reviews that mention time and complexity scare you, you should realize that there the recipes in this book vary in complexity from extremely simple to complicated and that you should decide which recipes to make accordingly. Lastly, like all recipes, a certain amount of experimentation/variation may be needed to suit your needs; the authors teach you how to do it exactly right, but a little cheating will still yield awesome bread.
