Feisty, resourceful forest ranger Anna Pigeon faced everything from raging fires to deep-water dives with cool aplomb in her first five adventures. Very early in Blind Descent her courage is put to an even greater test when she learns that a woman seriously injured while exploring a cave next door to New Mexico's Carlsbad Caverns is a friend who has requested Pigeon's help in getting her out. "A chilling image filled Anna's mind: herself crouched and whimpering, fear pouring like poison through her limbs, shutting down her brain as the cave closed in around her." Pushing aside her fears, Pigeon takes the plunge, leading readers through a truly harrowing series of tight squeezes. Nevada Barr is so good at involving us in Anna's terror that when she finally resurfaces, we share her "unadulterated joy. Even the dirt smelled alive... When she saw her first stars, she croaked out her delight from tired lungs." Above ground, Anna quickly gets involved in two possibly linked murders and becomes a rifleman's target. As we share the progress of her investigation, a sneaky suspicion starts to grow of possible suspects within the small community of spelunkers and National Park Service bureaucrats. Barr couldn't possibly ask Anna to go back underground again, could she? When it happens, of course, it seems inevitable--and just as frightening as the first time.

Book Description

A would-be killer is drawing Anna Pigeon deep into the darkness-and closer to hell than she's ever gone before.

"Anna Pigeon, the intrepid National Park Service ranger in Nevada Barr's superb wilderness mysteries, has had some perilous experiences in the five novels that preceded Blind Descent, but none compares with this thrilling subterranean adventure in the underground caverns of Lechuguilla, 'a monster man-eating cave' in New Mexico's Carlsbad Caverns. When a fellow ranger is injured in a caving accident, Anna chokes back the willies of claustrophobia and joins the rescue team. Burrowing 800 feet below ground, she negotiates airless tunnells, gaping pits, vaulting caverns and silently flowing rivers, each hazard with a daunting name like Razor Blade Run or the Wormhole. At the end of the dangerous descent, she reaches her friend and hears her say, 'It wasn't an accident.' A would-be killer is drawing Anna Pigeon deep into the darkness-and closer to hell than she's ever gone before.

I always enjoy Nevada Barr's novels. Once again Anna Pigeon finds herself in another dangerous situation, this one inside a vast underground cavern with some very tight spots. Great suspense!

4 out of 5 stars High quality mystery from a gifted author.......2007-08-22

Though I have read and enjoyed every Anna Pigeon mystery that preceded this book, this was by far my favorite. This is because Barr's skills grow with each novel and with each new mystery, her gifts as a writer begin to flower more and more.

One of the great rewards of serial fiction is watching a character grow and develop over the course of several novels. This leads to a depth that's not possible with stand-alone novels. It also presents a greater challenge to an author, a test that Barr is passing with flying colors. I've always found Anna to be a likable character but the more I get to know her, the more I like her. I have a vested interest in her and when she does something stupid, when she's in danger, I truly care what happens to her.

An enormous part of the appeal of this novel has to do with its setting. Anyone who has ever visited a cave and been treated to even a minute stretch of time in its absolute darkness will feel the same willies I felt while reading the cave passages. Even those who have never visited will be able to feel it and will relate to Anna's claustrophobia. The cold, calculating villain of the novel has nothing on the setting, on the cave that seems equal parts source of wonder and nightmare.

My only gripe with this novel was its end and that is what kept me from rating this one five stars. The ending was too abrupt for me and left me feeling like perhaps some of my pages were missing. Still, this is a pretty minor fault in a novel that is well worth reading, especially for those who enjoy a taut, well-written mystery with a cast of interesting, well-drawn characters.

5 out of 5 stars The best Anna Pigeon book I've read so far........2007-05-15

Out of 5 or 6, this book strains less credibility than any of the other Anna Pigeon books I've read. Having visited Carlsbad, I could imagine the surrounding terrain, and the other world deep underground from the author's prose. Her descriptions of the caverns were excellent and the mystery more intense than most, especially the method of death for one of the victims. I admit, it was the 1st one of her books that I figured out why the murders were happening before hands, but I still didn't figure out the who done it until it was revealed deep in the bowels of the earth. The ending was quite abrupt, but that was in keeping with the entire book. I stayed up way past my bedtime reading this one.

5 out of 5 stars Who Turned Out the Lights?.......2006-09-26

Anna Pigeon is asked to help rescue a seriously injured friend from deep caverns, not a prospect our clautrophobic heorine relishes. But tingling with terror, Anna plunges down, and we as readers feel every sensation that terrorizes her. Once above ground again, Anna looks into a couple of murders, and her snooping draws a rifle bead to her forehead. Anna must return to the cavern depths to find the solution and in doing so, she must find and escape the murderer. This is suspense to the limit.

As a longtime spelunker, I was delighted to see a mystery thriller set in a cave, and Nevada Barr does an exemplary job with the setting, explaining the effects of sensory deprivation and the suspense and fear of exploring the deep dark unknowns of caverns, all wrapped around an gripping mystery that keeps the reader guessing until the end. I tore through this book like flood waters through a canyon. Just couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic spelunking.......2006-08-07

I finished this book, my first Anna Pigeon mystery, a week before leaving on a vacation that included Carlsbad Caverns. Lechugilla was discovered only 20 years ago and is likely to remain closed the the public. Looking through the coffee table book on sale in the CaCa bookstore, I can see why. The cave is as beautiful as Anna describes it, and there were pictures that brought her cave to life.

My son and I went on a tour of Lower Caverns at Carlsbad, getting a brief sample of what it's like to be a spelunker. Barr describes the terror of being trapped in a cave, with no light. It's easier to imagine the terror when the ranger turns the lights out.

Read this book then go to Carlsbad Caverns for the real thing.

5 out of 5 stars Endless Suspense!!!!!.......2006-11-25

OK, let's fact it. You know the minute you pick up one of Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon park ranger mysteries that at some point in the narrative, our intrepid heroine is going to get herself into a life-threatening situation and you are going to be sitting on the edge of your seat unable to turn your CD player off.

However, in Blind Descent, Nevada Barr outdoes herself, because the suspense is as thick as the impenetrable darkness Anna Pigeon descends into when she joins a rescue team to bring out an injured park employee from a miles-long mostly unmapped cave in New Mexico's Carlsbad Caverns. The injured caver whispered Anna's name during a brief moment of consciousness, and so, battling claustrophobia Anna squeezes through tunnels and rappels down rock faces to the side of the injured woman, who confides to Anna, during another moment of lucidity, that she was pushed. Her injury was not an accident. Which one of the handful of people deep in the bowels of this inhospitable underworld did it? And why? Will they kill the injured caver before she can be brought to the surface? And, anyway, what was that sound? A cave creature?

One of the many charms of the Anna Pigeon mystery series is that the novels are all set in a different National Park, giving the reader an education in, for example, the behind-the-scenes workings of well-known locations such as Yosemite National Park as described in High Country, the civil war background of the less-known ramparts ruins on the island Dry Tortugas National Park at the tip of the Florida Keys, and the intriguing feeding habits of Glacier National Park grizzly bears in Blood Lure.

However, I expected that the almost totally underground setting of Blind Descent would be without charm until I began to read the book. That's when I discovered that, au contraire, underground caving, the creation of immense underground caverns, and their discovery is a fascinating subject.

And then there's our beloved Anna Pigeon, dashing and swash-buckling, at a time in her life when most people are contemplating early retirement, she continues to pull off deeds of daring-do in spite of aching joints and fatigue. I can't help myself. I love Anna Pigeon. When I grow up I want to be just like her, except that, uh oh, I am already grown up. OK, so I love to pretend I am her, leaping tall buildings in a single bound, flying faster than a jet plane . . . no, wait a minute, that's another super hero. In any case, Anna is as close to a real down-to-earth super heroine as you can get and I love her.

I also love narrator Barbara Rosenblat's wonderful performances throughout the Anna Pigeon series. How can she possibly sound like so many different people including men, women, and children of all ages? Her range, tone, cadence, and rhythm change so effortlessly. I've also enjoyed listening to Barbara Rosenblatt in the Egyptologist mystery series, by Elizabeth Peters (in which I'm absolutely in love with Ramses) and which Rosenblat narrates entirely in a British accent. Amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Reviewing the Reviewer.......2006-05-21

It is not normally my habit to respond to inappropriate reviews; after all, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. But if a review in inept, spiteful, or needlessly insulting, I occasionally add my two cents worth. As the author of Cursed in New England, I have to reply to the reviewer who cleverly calls him/herself "whateverz "..."(Hell). First, the reviewer says "Attention all ghost hunters!" Why? It is not a book about ghosts or ghost hunters. If s/he had read and understood at least the title, it would be clear it is a book about curses. Then s/he goes on to tell the reader Cursed in New England "is not a book of haunted places." Clearly this reviewer has a firm grasp of the obvious; it was never intended to be about haunted places. And more: s/he says, "it has a weak story also". Well that may be true, but it is collection of dozens of stories about curses. Some may be weaker than others, but one infers that Prof. "whateverz "..."(Hell) believes s/he was reading a single book-length story (and not very well). The reviewer concludes the insightful analysis with, it "isn't really worth reading if you're into horror stories." I repeat myself: It is not a book of horror stories. Rather, it is a study that recounts and discusses a series of New England curses. The writer admits to a short attention span and that, at least, is accurate. He or she couldn't even make it all the way through the title. Seems to me if someone is going to "review" a book, they should learn to read first. But that's just my bias.

1 out of 5 stars Attention all ghost hunters:.......2006-04-08

For those who have short attention spans like I do, this book is not a book of haunted places. Other than that, it has a weak story also, and isn't really worth reading if you're into horror stories.

5 out of 5 stars Citro does it again.......2005-10-19

If you're at all familiar with Mr. Citro, then you already know that he is the authority on New England stories of oddities. His books are well written, his research very thorough, and his subject matter captivating. Here we have a collection of stories involving curses and even if you don't believe in them, the aftermath is very compelling. I really enjoyed the chapter on the Kennedy tragedies, as I had never heard the complete story.

5 out of 5 stars It's not polite to curse.......2005-08-18

In his new book, Joseph Citro thoroughly explores the history and folklore of death and misfortune brought about through the power of words. And Citro doesn't disappoint. The book is fascinating, educational, entertaining and hard to put down. The curses that unfold in these pages stretch from the earliest days of New England colonialism through the modern age of politics.

Of course, there must be an entry from the days of Salem's witch hysteria, and Citro supplies the eerie tale of Giles Corey, an elderly man pressed to death for refusing to consent to trial, and whose dying curse plagued generations of Salem sheriffs. In a land where Native Americans paid a dear price to Europe's colonial spirit, you'll find numerous Indian curses such as the one that ravaged the town of Burton and another that made a death-trap of the Saco River.

The horrifying fate of Rogers' Rangers follows hard on the heels of plunder and slaughter. The entire population of Dudleytown felt the power of a curse. A luxury steamer on Lake Champlain burned to the water after being cursed by a displaced passenger. The ancient tree of Tarkiln demanded its due respect. And an entire island in Boston Harbor disappeared after a man executed there vowed it would be so.

Citro even takes on the mighty Kennedy clan, revealing the tradition of bad luck that has followed family members through several generations and has repeatedly dashed their hopes for power. Although reluctant to veer into a sensational "tabloid" style of writing, Citro rightly explains that the greatest New England curse of the 20th century can hardly be ignored.

Citro has a pleasant way of telling tales; this is the sort of fellow you want sitting in the best chair at a fireside gathering, regaling the party with stories. He lays down the stories in an engaging narrative, then follows it up with citations from available research and his own experiences. The personal touch is a delightful extra step that is lacking from many books in this genre. From cursed springs to damned village, he's been there, and he records his impressions of the experience.

When his research debunks a legend, he provides the explanation. In one case, for instance, the well-known story of a self-inflicted curse has its roots in a work of early fiction that spread and was accepted as truth.

5 out of 5 stars King of Curses.......2004-09-14

CURSED IN NEW ENGLAND is, to my way of thinking, the best non-fiction Joseph A Citro has done. It seems each story gets a bit more length and development than in past books, and so they really take on some power. At the same time he does his usual good job of straddling the fence, or actually avoiding the fence, on the old "true or not" question. Joseph Citro is definitely becoming this century's and New England's Washington Irving -- preserving all the area's wonderful myths and stories. Good job.

      Book Description

The Complete Land that Time Forgot: All Three Classic Adventures from the Prehistoric World that Lives Today-The Land that Time Forgot; The People that Time Forgot & Out of Time's Abyss Before Jurassic Park there was The Land that Time Forgot In 1916 the great World War is raging on land and on the world's oceans. On the high seas a ship falls victim to a marauding German U-boat. The vagaries of fate decree that soon the tables will be turned on the aggressors, and the survivors will take control. This story of war becomes something far more bizarre as the search for land and fresh water draws the polyglot crew into a subterranean channel which leads to an exotic, unknown world. When an enormous, amphibian reptile-of a type only known from distant prehistory-appears in living form and attacks, devouring a man in the process, the survivors realise that this is the start of a high adventure beyond anything they could have imagined. This Leonaur edition contains all three of Edgar Rice Burroughs' The Land that Time Forgot novels and is guaranteed to deliver all the thrills and spills that Burroughs' fans expect.

Leonaur Ltd. is publishing the definitive Edgar Rice Burroughs 21st century editions. These usually contain 2 books of the different ERB major series in order - thus far John Carter, Pellucidar, and Carson of Venus. In the future, possibly Tarzan!
These books are handsome and my rating is mainly based on this - the ERB fan knows best about the rest of it.
The 3 novels is a small series of Burroughs set during World War I, where the survivors of a submarine attack singing and some of the submariners become stranded in an isolated island which time forgot. Dinosaurs, primitive men, and all the rest... . Much better than what it sounds, much better than the 2 movies, and preceding many other books where modern man meet a pre-civilization environment. Of famous such works, only Conan Doyle's Lost World adventures precede this - but I am no expert on this branch of fantastic literature!

It must have been a little after three o'clock in the afternoon that it happened - the afternoon of June 3rd, 1916. It seems incredible that all that I have passed through - all those weird and terrifying experiences - should have been encompassed within so short a span as three brief months. Rather might I have experienced a cosmic cycle, with all its changes and evolutions for that which I have seen with my own eyes in this brief interval of time - things that no other mortal eye had seen before, glimpses of a world past, a world dead, a world so long dead that even in the lowest Cambrian stratum no trace of it remains. Fused with the melting inner crust, it has passed forever beyond the ken of man other than in that lost pocket of the earth whither fate has borne me and where my doom is sealed. I am here and here must remain.

Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was a prodigiously productive writer of pulp fictions--literary entertainments, that is, published in inexpensive, easily obtained periodicals. His style was simple and instantly accessible, his stories riveting if often implausible tales of adventure, and of good overcoming evil. Burroughs wasn't much of an artist. But, as Mike Resnick writes in his introduction to this commemorative edition of Burroughs's immensely popular trilogy The Land That Time Forgot, first published in 1924, almost every book Burroughs wrote remains in print, and countless readers turn to his Mars and Tarzan novels every day.

In Land, Burroughs concocts a fabulous microworld, located somewhere in the South Pacific, called Caspak. On this mountainous island live winged, humanlike creatures, dinosaurs, ferocious beasts of prey, Neanderthals, "wild ape-men," and monstrous reptiles; they terrorize each other, to say nothing of the mixed crew of World War I-era adventurers who inadvertently land on a Caspakian beach and fight their way across the island, dining on Plesiosaurus steaks and having a grand old time in the company of a jungle princess. The story streaks onward like a bullet toward its surprise ending, and it's pure fun all the way. --Gregory McNamee

        Book Description

Torpedoed by a German U-boat in the South Pacific during World War I, a group of adventurers find themselves marooned on Caprona, a hidden and impregnable island seemingly suspended in time, inhabited by dinosaurs, Neanderthals, scattered bands of humans, and cities of fierce humanoids. As they explore this otherworldly place, the protagonists struggle to unlock the fabulous secret at its heart. A fantasy classic, The Land That Time Forgot remains a fast-paced adventure impossible to put down. Originally published in three installments in Blue Book magazine, Burroughs’s trilogy is presented here in its entirety.

5 out of 5 stars ERB's definitive Lost World tale.......2007-09-13

In The Land That Time Forgot, Edgar Rice Burroughs provides the definitive Lost World tale. In the lost continent of Caspak, Burroughs provides holdovers from Earth's primal history together with a frightening vision of what may succeed us. By the time ERB wrote this, the world had been exposed to H Rider Haggard, Arthur Conan Doyle, and others who had shown us their visions of a lost world. Here, though, ERB gives us an interesting conceit tying all the denizens of Caspak together in a strange way. Terms like "batu," "cor-sva-jo," "cos-ata-lo," and "cos-ata-lu" are introduced bewilderingly to the reader, who then follows the breadcrumbs along with the heroes to see where they lead. The result is deeply intriguing, giving this tale an unusual twist I've never read in any other lost world tale, not even those of the wonderful A Merritt. Of course there are love stories, travails, and action aplenty as any Burroughs fan can expect also in this brilliant tale. Kudos to Bison Books for bringing us all the tales of Caspak together. This is one of ERB's finest works, and it is simply brilliant.

Fast, friendly service. Pleasure to do business with.

4 out of 5 stars Classic adventure fiction.......2006-07-07

One of the most iconic figures in all of fiction is Tarzan, who was created by Edgar Rice Burroughs over a century ago. Although Tarzan may be his most famous character, Burrough's produced many other tales, including a Mars series and a Venus Series. He also wrote a trilogy of novellas that collectively are known as The Land That Time Forgot which takes the reader to a savage world of dinosaurs and other prehistoric beasts.

The Land That Time Forgot fits into a rather specialized genre called Lost World fiction which was especially big in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and featured characters finding lost kingdoms deep in the mountains, under the sea, in the jungle and elsewhere. Other notable works in this field include Hilton's Lost Horizon and Haggard's She. As is often the case in these books, we get the tale secondhand; the author supposed found a lost manuscript and he is just passing on the story. Burroughs starts with this device but later in the trilogy abandons it.

The trilogy opens with the story also called The Land That Time Forgot. During World War I, a shipful of Americans and Englishmen are beset by a German U-boat. Through luck and pluck, they seize the U-boat even as their own ship goes down. The narrator, Bowen Tyler, is able to operate the submarine, but they are unable to find a friendly port since none of the Allied vessels are willing to accept an apparently hostile sub. Wandering through the ocean, they eventually wind up in the South Pacific where they come upon a lost island walled by great mountains. There is access, however, through an underwater tunnel, and soon the characters are in the land of Caspak.

Caspak is a strange land where the usual laws of biology don't apply. Creatures can evolve within their lifetime, particularly humans, who for the most part must work their way us the evolutionary ladder (which, according to Burroughs, has humanity as its peak). There are carnivores everywhere, especially giant reptiles and mammals which are a constant threat to Tyler and the others.

In the second story, The People That Time Forgot, the story shifts to Tom Billings, a friend of Tyler's who goes on a rescue mission for his lost friend. The third novella focuses on John Bradley, a member of the original group who had become separated from his fellows. Each story further develops the land of Caspak and the strange societies within.

While using the trappings of science fiction, this really isn't sci-fi but rather adventure fiction. Burroughs isn't really interested in science in his stories beyond the vague amount necessary to give plausibility. Burroughs also has some rather antiquated views regarding women and other races (of course, he was writing in another era); because of this, it may not be a good read for young kids, even if this views are somewhat toned down in this book. By modern standards, Burroughs probably would not even be considered a good writer: his characters are rather shallow and his narrative is filled with coincidences and ludicrous last-minute rescues.

Despite its flaws (or maybe even because of them), the story works. This is a fun read and a delight from beginning to end. In addition to entertainment value, science fiction fans can enjoy the historical worth of this story as well; Burroughs had an influence on many authors in the science fiction and fantasy fields. Burroughs had no pretensions of writing great literature; instead, he just wanted to tell good stories, and with The Land That Time Forgot, he succeeds.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoy your journey........2006-06-18

This book is comprised of three interrelated 140 page novellas. All three novellas are about the island of Caspak, where dinosaurs, cavemen and other prehistoric beings still exist. Part I stars Bowen Tyler, and tells how he and a group of other people ended up in Caspek. Part II stars Tom Billings, who goes to Caspek to rescue Bowen Tyler after he reads Tyler's manuscript, which was printed as Part I. Part III tells what happened to John Bradley, who went missing in Part I. The three novellas work very well together as one novel. The mysteries of Caspek are introduced in the first part and are finally solved in the last part. Along the way, the three heroes have exciting adventures and find their true loves (it wouldn't be a Burroughs story if the hero didn't meet the girl of his dreams). This is a very enjoyable read, especially if you like old time pulp fiction.

4 out of 5 stars A trilogy that ages well.......2005-08-04

I first read this trilogy as a kid and although I enjoyed the dinosaur stuff, I didn't quite get the evolutionary subplot. Re-reading it now, I find a lost world story with a difference. The beings who evolve individually over days (rather than the gradual evolution of centuries) are a unique concept in the sf/fantasy genre. Burroughs manages to meld this concept with a sharp adventure story that involves several groups of lead characters to create a fascinating story. A must for those who only know Burroughs by way of Tarzan.

          Book Description

THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT While matching wits and blows with a crew of Germans aboard a WWI U-33 submarine, Bowen Tyler, his loyal dog, Nobs, the stunning Lys, and a group of tough Brits become hopelessly lost on the Pacific thanks to an act of sabotage. But soon after land is sighted all hope is crushed. Long lost to the outside world, the land they have discovered-Caspak-teems with prehistoric monsters, and men of every epoch...and they're hungry. THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT Tom Billings, close friend to Bowen Tyler, sets out on a rescue mission. Having found Tyler's bottled note floating in the ocean, Billings is familiar with the dangers of Caspak, but knowledge and experience are not the same. Billings quickly finds himself alone in the land of dinosaurs and ape-men, on the run and accompanied by a beautiful Caspak native-Ajor. OUT OF TIME'S ABYSS Bradley, one of the surviving Brits from Bowen Tyler's crew, sets off into the interior of Caspak in search of Billings and a way home to England. He cuts a path through the sinewy jungle and emerges at the heart of Caspak, where he uncovers the horrible secret-a race of hideous creatures that are beyond scientific classification...beyond all imagining.

5 out of 5 stars Broad treatment of fondue pot use.......2007-08-11

I grew up thinking that fondues were just cheese, cheese, cheese, so I leapt at a book that would broaden my understanding. This is exactly that I got in this book. Coverage of various styles may not be deep, but the authors present a sampling of an enormous range of fondue pot uses from various cuisines around the world.

A small nit to pick is that the text is somewhat clumsily translated from German, and it pays to read the recipe instructions carefully prior to starting. The instructions are not particularly well segmented and laid out for you to read as you go. Nevertheless, for the one and only fondue cookbook in my collection, this was a great pick.

5 out of 5 stars An oldie but goodie.......2007-01-04

I have tabbed this book like crazy!! My father in law gave me a fondue pot for my b-day. I remember my mom her friends playing cards listening to Al Green records(am i dating myself?) and eating out of one pot. That was the depth of my experience with fondue. I bought this book so that I would have a clue as to what to do with my gift. I have tried about half of the meat and cheese recipes and the majority have been well recieved. The pictures give it a bit of a dated look but the good simple food transcends the time that has passed since this book was first published. It is simple and easy to follow. This is a great primer for those new to fondue.

This book has lots of good recipes but it does seem to repeat itself some what by printing out new recipes for variants on a theme. That being said it is still my favorite book of fondue recipes and ideas.

While you're buying this book take a look at the Le Creuset Fondue pots. In my opinion, they are the best!

I found many amazing Fondue recipes in this book. My favorites are the Classic Fondue (always a hit); the Dill Fondue and the Toblerone Fondue. I throw a big fondue party every year, featuring four types of cheese fondue and two dessert fondues. The recipes in this book have never let me down. They are delicious and easy to prepare. This book is highly recommended.

This is my favorite Fondue cookbook, and you could tell if you saw the folded pages of my fav recipes. I have not tried even half of the recipes and am thoroughly pleased with this. I have not tried them, but them, but there are Asian inspired dishes to try.

I am wishing for a Raclette for Christmas, and there are also recipes for that grill in this book also. It is nice to know if I get my Raclette, I already have recipes.

                  Highly, Highly recommend this cookbook.
