Lots of fun and great characters!.......2007-09-20
I really enjoyed this lighthearted cozy mystery, right up to the end... then it fell apart for me. It was the dialogue. It felt contrived and cheesy (no pun intended). However, I was able to overlook that part and enjoyed the whole book as great fun. I especially loved Emily's grandmother - says what she thinks when she wants to and has good ol' fashioned common Midwestern sense. Lots of fun! Just ignore the silly dialogue at the end! I did laugh out loud several times while reading this, which I have only done when reading Stephanie Plum or Scumble River books. I will be reading more in this series.
Hilarious mystery !! .......2007-06-24
Emily Andrew is her grandmother's traveling companion on a senior citizens' tour to Switzerland. They check in at the hotels and "events" start to happen: people die, Emily repeatedly gets into water of one kind or another, the food is awful, someone else dies, Emily gets chummy with the police, their luxury hotel room never seems to materialize. And it goes on and on, all depicted by the very witty mind of Maddy Hunter.
I can't wait to read this whole series and the esccapes of of Emily Andrew.
Highly entertaining.......2007-01-19
This is the first in a series, and let me tell you - I can't wait to get my grubby little hands on the next book! I loved the main character (for you Evanovich fans, she has a lot in common with Stephanie Plum - down to the eccentric grandmother!) and the storyline was well done and kept you guessing. I laughed out loud several times through the book, and I'm hard pressed not to rush out and buy the rest of the series! One interesting note, though - part of the theme of the book - was that Iowans are particularly punctual people. My boss is from Iowa, and we consider him timely if he makes a meeting in the same day it was scheduled. So I wonder if he's an aberrant specimen or if her conclusions about Iowans are a little off the mark.
Laugh out loud funny!.......2006-07-02
As a frequent traveler, I can sympathize with some of the humor about touring foreign countries. Lighten up people, this is not a guidebook, it is a work of fiction :-) I recommend it to anyone who likes their mysteries with lots of humor.
Great New Find.......2006-05-11
THIS WAS A GREAT BOOK. I JUST COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN.I LOVED THE WAY THEY TALKED ABOUT THE DIFFRET BUILDINGS IN THE TOWN. IT WAS A GREAT LIGHT MYSTERY READ. I WOULD RECOMMEND IT. I'M GOING TO GET THE REST OF THE SERIES.THIS IS ONE YOU JUST DON'T WANNA PUT DOWN ONCE YOU GET STARTED.THE STORY LINE JUST PULLS YOU IN. THE CARICTERS ARE WONDERFULL AND FUNNY.AND I LOVE THE TRIPS THEY TAKE. I JUST HAD TO GIVE IT 5 STARS FOR A GREAT FIRST BOOK IN THE SERIES.

Not every story should be reissued.......2007-01-01
Keith Laumer has always been a favorite author of mine. The "Retief" stories- where an interstellar diplomat swashbuckles through red tape and alien invasions alike - are some of the funniest and most entertaining SF that I've ever read. The "Bolo" super-tanks that he created to fight humanity's wars amongst the stars were similarly some of the best military sci-fi of its era.
But a writer as prolific as Laumer cannot always be at the top of his game, and the stories collected here are prime examples of why some work should be left in the dust. Of the eight stories collected here only one, titled "Doorstep" entertained me in any way. It is only ten pages long, but it nicely illustrates a sub-genre of sci-fi that is largely out of style; the ending with a twist. This is where you think you know what is happening, but as the reader you are missing one crucial fact that, when revealed, completely changes your perception of what has gone before. "Doorstep" has a clever twist that is accomplished with aplomb.
Unfortunately those are the only ten worthwhile pages in this collection. The sixty page long novella "Thunderhead" deserves a mention for being a good concept poorly executed, but the rest of the stories don't even rise to that level. The title book, "A Plague of Demons", and a later story, "Greylorn", are the two worst offenders. Both have plots that jump from one setting to another in the last act with little to no foreshadowing or justification, and you can't help but thinking that Laumer had simply written himself into a corner and forced the story into a new channel to get a conclusion.
The remainder of the stories vary from uninteresting to mildly bad. Overall, none of them come close to justifying the eight dollar cover price. If you're a Laumer fanatic, it is interesting to see some of his lesser-known work, but if you're a science fiction fan looking for a good story, check out the Retief or Bolo books instead.
The short story that made me love SF.......2005-08-28
A plague of demons" is a great story. I recommend it to anyone who likes a fast pace storyline and an ending you didn't know was coming!
The other stories in this book is good too, but "A plague..." is truly great fiction!
Classic Stuff, if you're up for it........2003-05-10
This collection of Keith Laumer's works is part of the Baen Books republication of Laumer's writings. It seems that Laumer is one of those authors that people either love, or can't finish the first paragraph without screaming. If you are one of those who loves his work, get the whole series. You won't regret it.
Many of these stories have been out of print for a while and have been hard to find. I have fond memories of reading Laumer while serving in the Air Force on missions in the Middle East (ironically, detached to the State Department much as Laumer himself was), thinking "aside from the advanced hardware, this isn't fiction". Many of the stories in this volume are inspirational in a dark way, as they share a common thread of many of his works, that of the lone man doing what is right, against hopeless odds, even to self destruction, because of principle. It's a timeless lesson, but one many need to learn.
Skip Eric Flint's rather pointless comments, and just read the stories and David Drake's memories of Laumer.
Book Description
This comparative interdisciplinary study of the rise of Christianity in the late Roman Empire and in colonial Mexico reveals that epidemic disease undermined pre-Christian societies, contributing respectively to pagan and Indian interest in new forms of social and religious life. Christian clerics and monks in early medieval Europe and, later, Jesuit missionaries in colonial Mexico, reacted by introducing new beliefs and practices and accommodating indigenous religions as well.

Salem Massachusetts 1692, Patience Gladstone stands before the town magistrate accused of witchcraft - Salem Massachusetts 1992, Crystal Patience Gladstone Donovan stands at her great-grandmother's funeral. "The Demon Plague" starts as a traditional tale of the Salem Witch Trials and ends quite another way. We follow the path of a crystal amulet bearing a star shaped flaw as it weaves its way through time. At the heart of this journey is a plot by a future race of people borne of a distant disaster. Crystal finds herself the heir of this amulet but no sooner than she gets it, the amulet is gone. Soon after Crystal finds the amulet missing, a charming teenager named Ba Tuti claiming to be the Moon to Crystals star. Ba Tuti reminds Crystal of a poem learned as a child:
Flesh that bears the ancient star,
Passed from womb to womb;
May crystal right
The demon blight,
While guarded by the moon.
The two begin a close friendship forged by trials and adventure. To say more would spoil the story for others.
The author weaves a fanciful tale - a mix of sci-fi, history and mystery. You grow to care for these women and join in their fight. McFate did a lovely job weaving one time into another. There was no jarring of the mind and the times and methods were believable.
There were twists and turns and you never knew what to expect around the next corner. It was an enjoyable and quick read that I had to fight to put down, finding that I missed the characters when it was over.
Midwest Book Review -- Mayra Calvani.......2005-06-28
Salem, 1692.
At the Magistrate's House, a young red-headed woman named Patience Gladstone is in trial for witchcraft. Among the present is a mysterious tall blond stranger whose gaze seems keenly fixed on an amulet which rests on the table of evidence-an exceptional-looking crystal that holds the "blemish" of a perfectly five-pointed star within it... the same star which, to the people's horror, marks the skin of Patience Gladstone behind her ear.
The atmosphere of tension rises at the trial when another figure appears, at least seven feet tall and as broad as two men standing abreast, his face as hideous as that of a demon from hell. As the demon lunges himself against the tall blond stranger, panic spreads among the crowd, the sheriff raises his flintlock, and a thunderous explosion is heard.
Immediately after this scene the reader is transported to the old town cemetery, year 1992.
Crystal Donovan, a young journalist for the Salem Gazette, is at a turning point in her life. At her grandmother's burial, she is given a strange crystal amulet which she is told she must guard with her life. She is also urged to remember and recite an old poem her grandmother taught year years ago.
Crystal's mind is plagued with haunting, troubling questions. What does the poem mean? Why is the star on the amulet so similar to her own birthmark? Does her full name-Crystal Patience Gladstone Donovan, have something to do with it? What, in fact, is her mission, and why does it seem so imminent?
As Crystal searches for these answers, an exciting series of events follow-a horrible murder, running from demons, being transported back in time and then forward into the future. A different array of interesting characters-including Crystal's dog, an adorable Doberman who maintains his important role throughout the book-non-stop action and plot twists will keep readers turning those pages late into the night.
Witch hunters, demons, malfunctioning time machines, evil scientists and bloodthirsty creatures from the future... In the midst of so much adversity, will Crystal fulfil her destiny?
The Demon Plague combines horror, time travel and science fiction to create a thrilling ride that will leave demanding readers satisfied and even breathless. The author has interwoven the past, present and future beautifully. The characters are engaging and believable and the dialogue sparkles with genuineness. Scenes are kept short and the writing focuses on narrative and dialogue, keeping descriptions to a minimum to ad to the fast-pace, thrilling effect. Yet the author manages to create a fully imaginable world, one which is vividly visualised. For those who have always found the Salem's witch trials fascinating, this book certainly ads a new original twist to the story. An exciting, entertaining, well-worth read.

The Demon Plague - Review
"The Demon Plague by Joreid McFate is a fantastic paranormal suspense science-fiction novel, involving time-travel and mysticism. This 424 page book is also available in e-book format.
Due to the volume of books I review, most are donated to our local library when the assignment is complete. However, this is one book that I just cannot part with. I felt this comment is important to mention, because only .04% of the books I review find their way to my personal bookshelves.
This exciting tale begins when a demon plague sweeps over mankind, wrought when some scientists developed a technology that mastered time travel. There are factions who radically search for a way towards racial and genetic purity - while others strive to cure the plague and fight for basic human rights. Crystal Patience Gladstone Donovan is caught up in this war when, at her grandmother's deathbed, she is given a family heirloom and told that she is the `Star' and to await her `Moon'.
Soon she is involved in a journey into the past where she meets her ancestor Patience Gladstone Talbot, another `Star'. Crystal learns that her middle names are common throughout time as they are given to the gifted child who is known by a birthmark. Chase scenes, deceit, battles, flashing back and forth into the past and into the future are all stepping-stones for Crystal and her friends in their attempts to do the right thing.
This story line could be used as an excellent reminder of the dangers and grand possibilities advanced technology could reap. It was refreshing to experience realistic female hero characters in this novel. I was absolutely astounded when I read that not only is Joreid McFate actually two separate authors, but that despite many other collaborative projects they have never met and never spoken on the telephone!
Without hesitation, I recommend The Demon Plague with the highest of ratings."

Demon Plague.......2004-11-16
Demon Plague is the story of a special connection between two families. Though the bonding of these two families had been foretold many generations before, the action of this story begins in Salem during the witch trials of 1692. Patience Gladstone, an indentured servant to Reverend Parris, and Tituba, a slave to Reverend Parris, realize that they have a strange mystical connection. This connection between the two women and their respective families becomes solidified when Tituba gives Patience an ancient relic. This ancient relic along with special star and moon birthmarks is inherited through the female forever connecting the descendants of these two women as special sisters.
The story of this special family connection continues through to 1992. In 1992, Crystal Patience Gladstone Donovan, a reporter from Salem, attends her grandmother's funeral. However, this sad event turns strange when her grandmother's best friend Ubitta starts talking about prophecies, sisters, birthmarks, and special magical powers. Little does Crystal know that her life is going to become a whole lot stranger.
Demon Plague is an active science fiction that connects generations of characters seamlessly through time. That the story takes place in Salem, immediately reinforces in the reader's mind the well known political, social, and spiritual norms and conflicts at the time. The author then uses the present and the future to show the distinct differences and changes in these political, social, and spiritual norms and conflicts during later time periods. This creates a nice solid foundation for the story. Furthermore, the personality and character traits of each set of female characters match her specific time period while still illustrating specific inherited character and personality traits shared by the generations of sisters.

Book Description
Great Britain, Summer 1944.
A Small squadron of British and American aircraft depart at dawn on a long-range strike into Germany, but as they cross the English Channel, the squadron vanishes.
Drawn thousands of light-years across the galaxy by Kamalon's "Sensitive Mothers," ten men and eight aircraft are greeted by a roaring crowd in a field before the provincial capitol, on the continent of Azra; a land in desperate need of champions.
Captain Ross Murdock and the 51 Squadron are cast into a whirlwind adventure of intrigue, treachery, and romance as they are "culled" back and forth across the universe, outwitting and outrunning the Germans, while they attempt to foil the invasion of Azra by the neighboring continent of Krete.
The Hawks of Kamalon is a heart-warming adventure in the classic tradition of Robert Heinlein, but it also examines the parameters of faith and friendship, the qualities that define civilization, and the width and depth of spirit.

Reisig deserves more recognition and a national audience!.......2003-02-17
Let me start this review by simply saying that Michael Reisig is one of the best new storytellers that I have read in recent years! Having read his extremely impressive apocalyptic novel, "The New Madrid Run", a few years ago, I was pleased to finally find a copy of "The Hawks of Kamalon". What Reisig has created in this book is a novel of epic proportions. He has created memorable characters entwined in a gripping and thrill-a-minute plot.
Take a novel that thrusts WWII pilots from the British and US Air Force into a cosmic world located light years away, throw in battle scenes taken straight out of the Battle of Britain and The Alamo and you've got "Hawks...". The novel really takes off when the pilots are drawn through a time portal to serve as the last-ditch heroes for a nation under seige by an evil dictator. Using their WWII Spitfires and P-51's to fill the skies with bombs and bullets to protect their new friends, they soon find themselves drawn closer to these people than they expected to be. In a book filled with multiple heroes, Reisig does a fine job keeping all of the characters straight in the reader's mind while making an unbelieveable sci-fi premise, almost believeable.
"Hawks..." is a classic tale of good vs. evil and much of the action is straight out of a Clint Eastwood or John Wayne movie. The battle scenes are very graphic and create vivid word pictures. And while the "escape from the throes of death" scenes that the heroes keep surviving are more than a little far-fetched, (reminded me a lot of the Matthew Reilly books, so his fans will love "Hawks...") this is a book filled with action, romance, and energy.
Unlike many reviewers who rave about not being able to put down certain novels, I rarely have experienced that sensation. It's for that reason that I was so impressed with "Hawks...". It really is "un-put-down-able"! Here's hoping that Michael Reisig continues to write great stories like "Hawks..." and "The New Madrid Run" and begins to get the recognition on a national basis that he deserves for being a great storyteller!
HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!
Top 'o the Line Story.......2001-11-09
Reisig is one of the best story tellers around. "Hawks" is a real true adventure story .. but mixed in is love, both for country, mankind and between man and woman.
This book should be on everyone's "must read" list. And with it should go his "Madrid Run."
I'm totally sold on this writer - this story teller. He does it with both finesse and boldness, never leaving a reader hanging in the air wondering what the story is all about.
Reisig- Story Teller par excellance.......1999-12-28
Reading Michael Reisig books is similar to listening to the oral story tellers of old. You quickly forget you are reading and fall into the spell of the story being told to you. It's a grand thing to find a writer like Reisig who's narrative leads you deeper and deeper into his story and it's characters. "Hawks" is a masterful book. My copy was dog-eared from my two readings, and is now back on my shelf after three friends insisted on reading it. Long live the Hawks of Kamalon!
Can't put down kind of book.......1999-12-27
I just finished reading "The Hawks of Kamalon" and I couldn't believe it was over, I wanted it to go on and on. This book was filled with adventure, romance and a lot of excitement. From the very beginning I found myself up in the planes with them flying in a deminsion where everything is different from anything else I have ever known. Through this whole book I felt that I was there with them. It is a very good book that can carry you away with it to wherever it goes and leaves you wanting more. GET THIS BOOK and you will lose a few nights sleep, not wanting to put it down. Thanks again for the adventure.
Great fun!.......1999-11-12
Action abounds in this high-flying adventure! A well-imagined plot along with superb characterizations and colorful, interesting dialogue make this novel a read you'll thoroughly enjoy. Buy this one!

SFFD husband uses this book.......2007-05-14
My husband is a SF firefighter and tells me that these recipes get made on a regular basis. My husband is a great cook and enjoys cooking for his fellow firefighters. He also knows that if it's not good he's going to hear about it. When he first started with the department he used this book a lot knowing that the recipes had been tested in the firehouses and became classics. The men and women of SFFD know how to cook and love really good food. If you want to get a sense of what they eat in a real big city firehouse you can't go wrong with this book!
Hot Cook Book For Men!.......2007-05-07
Great hearty foods that have perfect seasoning and with fresh ingrediants. So many of the mens cookbooks are open a can of this and add a can of that. Not so with this one.
Yet, the recipes are easy for those of us who are not in familar territory in the kitchen. This is a collection of the best of the best. You will be your own best customer and you can expect to be treated to accolades and requests of repeat performances.
Good Comfort Food Recipes.......2007-02-19
I think we can all agree that all firefighters are usually good cooks. My boyfriend who is a retired firefighter, asked me to buy this book for him because there is actually a picture of him in it. When it came, he was pleasantly surprised at how good the book was. I also spoke to another firefighter who said that he regretted not submitting a recipe and also thought the book and the recipes were very good.
Outstanding flavorful recipes........2007-01-04
My wife got me this for Christmas (Thank you!). She said that just reading it made her mouth water.
This book has recipes from firehouses in San Francisco. If you see this book anywhere, just look through it. That should be enough to want to buy it.
