Mystery and Heart.......2006-08-03
This is the third book in the Chintz 'n China series and the characters are full of heart. From the ghosts (both human and feline) to the main character, Emerald, to her teenage daughter. Joe (Emerald's younger EMT boyfriend) has purchased the empty lot next door and Emerald takes a vacation to help him clear it out. When they uncover the foundation to a former mansion and some some ghosts and faries, they start investigating the history of the property. They have to solve a fifty year old mystery to clear the lot of the psychic briars and then remove the corporeal ones. This may be the best one of the series so far, and I can't wait to read the fourth.
Coming back for more.......2006-03-29
I just finished reading 'A Harvest of Bones' and thoroughly enjoyed it. My immediate reaction was to find out what other books the author has written around the characters. It's a good storyline - one that will keep you coming back to finish. You want to find out what happens next - How will Murray handle her new love? What's going on with the kids? Are Joe and Em going to get married? Is Joe going to become more involved in the paranormal? What about the rest of Em's friends? It's a cozy, fun read. Find out for yourself to see if you agree.
The Best One Yet.......2005-12-17
Dare I say that the fourth book in the Chintz 'n China Mystery is the best one to date? Yes, I do!
Not only does the writing flow more easily this time around, but so does the mystery. It reminds me a bit of the second book, Legend of the Jade Dragon, in that both of them are completely immersed in the mystery and that all the really "bad" things that happen are somehow tied to the mystery itself. Not to mention that one of my favorite characters, White Deer, is back in this one!
The storyline: Em finds a secret room in the lot next door. Her cat is missing right about the time that a woman ghost and her ghost cat start appearing. (Those are basically the bare bones of the story, no pun intended.)
The Good: Most of the story is actually concerned with what happened in the lot next door. Once again, the author is good at making her characters seem real to the reader, which is always a plus.
While my "bad" section below will be much longer, I want to point out that overall, this novel is very strong in both plot and characterization. I was very much into to the story and it kept me reading!
The Bad: I can't really think of anything in particular. Dividing the novel into more chapters might have made it read faster, but that wasn't really a problem with this one since it had a storyline that kept the reader interested.
The only other "bad" thing (not really bad, but annoying lets say) is that Em comes from a long line of witches (or folk magic practitioners). While a bit cliche that her Nanna's a witch who passed her this 500-year-old dagger and a journal of German/English spells, I swallowed it. But now we learn that Emerald (and, of course, her grandmother) were both born on Halloween. How cliche can we get?
Also, is Joe like the most perfect man in the world? Good looking, young, understanding, loving, caring, and so on and on. I know the author is probably trying to make her character Em happy, but come on, no one's *that* perfect!
Also (this is not really a spoiler, since it didn't happen) I think a better ending would have been Em and her kids doing a little something to honor those that have passed on (with, of course, Brigit's picture included). This was talked about earlier in the book but it never really happened.
Overall, I enjoyed this novel very much. I know it doesn't seem like it from what I just said, but I just wanted to point out little annoyances that, well, annoyed me!
The fifth book is titled 'One Hex of a Wedding' and is due out August 2006.

highly original paranormal mystery .......2005-12-07
Emerald O Brien, the owner of the Chintz `n China Tea Room in Chiqetaw, Washington is a woman at peace with herself. She is well liked by the residents, who accept the fact that she has the Sight, has two beautiful children and is madly in love with Joe, a man ten years younger than her. To convince her he wants to be with her till death, he buys the lot adjoining Em's so it will be one large property.
While they are clearing the outdoor area, they uncover a room hidden below layers of dirt. Unknowingly, they opened a portal that allows Willow the Wisps, fae creatures who bring death with them, to enter the realm. They find in a yew tree the body of a girl, Brigit who used to live in that room and her cat that traveled into the spirit world with Brigit's. Em's and Brigit's cat changed places and Em's feline is a ghost in the spirit realm while Brigit's is only visible in the mortal world as a spirit. They must perform an exorcism to cleanse the land that Joe bought and find out why Brigit has not moved on to the next plane (with her cat) if Em and her family are to have any peace. They also want their cat returned to them so Em uses her grandmother's spells in the hopes that this will happen.
A HARVEST OF BONES is a highly original paranormal mystery with a touch of romance, the perfect book to snuggle under the covers with on a cold winter's night. The heroine and her friends take on ghosts, spirits, dragons and creatures from the otherworld as an everyday natural event because Em is a magnet for psychic phenomena. Yasmine Galenorn is a great mystery writer who uses paranormal elements to add a little of the exotic to her storytelling.

Book Description
Then the quiet was broken. The baby reached up a hand and jerked at the tablecloth. A spoon hit her on the head, and she started to cry. Bertha Schuler stuck her head out the door and called that dinner was ready. The clock in the hallway struck the half hour. And the first shot was fired.
The unsolved murders at a remote Wisconsin farmhouse half a century ago have receded into time. But one deranged man will do anything to make sure that all of Pepin County remembers that bloody day.
The world was out of balance. It had been so for nearly fifty years. Only he could see it. Only he could change it.
When a quantity of dangerous pesticides is stolen from the local co-op, Deputy Sheriff Claire Watkins is called in to investigate. The thief has left one bizarre clue: the finger bone of a child long dead.
The pesticides soon reappear with devastating effect—in flowerbeds, in animal feed, and in a fatal concoction at a Fourth of July picnic. Each time, a tiny human bone is left at the scene. With the help of Harold Peabody, the quirky, aging editor of the Durand Daily, Claire unravels the secrets of the past, leading her to a pair of young lovers, a man enraged over his mother’s death, an obsessive recluse, and the deputy who first discovered the corpses of the Schuler family Claire desperately races against time to find the madman before he uses the lethal pesticide again. But he won’t be stopped. Not until he gets what he wants.
The truth must be told. Or more will die. The flowers and the birds were only the beginning. . . .
Written with Mary Logue’s trademark power and compassion, Bone Harvest is a bold, brilliant thriller that carries the reader deep into the heart of the Wisconsin bluffs country, into the hearts of its people—and to a startling conclusion.
From the Hardcover edition.

Thumbs up!.......2007-01-11
I really enjoyed this book. The title nearly scared me away, because I don't like "horror" books, but this was not one. It has suspense, and the title suits the story (you'll see why when you read it), but it is not gory. I have not read any of the other books in this series and did not feel I was missing anything by starting with this one. I will, however, look for another in the series to read next.
A Suspense Novel with a Heart.......2006-06-23
I love suspense novels, so when I came upon the title Bone Harvest I couldn't resist! I thought the title might be a bit overplayed and I might end up a little disappointed. I can definitely say I was not disappointed at all! It was creepy, suspenseful, kept a good pace, had great characters - and most of all a very satisfying conclusion!
I will warn people - this is NOT a horror novel. If you are looking for a full on gore-fest, you will have to look elsewhere, but if you like a good suspense/mystery that has the capability to reach your heart, this is the book for you.
I'll definitely be looking for more of Mary Logue's books, I'm so glad that she has more out!

She plans to start a farmhouse bed-and-breakfast. She is lucky her gutsy neighbor, Ruth Willmarth, can teach her to milk her rented cow and tell her which of the local trade people to call upon. The discovery of a mysterious ring attached to a lone finger bone found on Ruth's land, and the sudden appearance of people--and a body--from the past, cements an unlikely friendship as Fay and Ruth attempt to solve a murder.
Customer Reviews:
Humorless, Unmemorable, and Implausible.......2003-08-29
This is my first encounter with Nancy Means Wright, and quite frankly it will probably be my last. For while HARVEST OF BONES isn't actually downright bad, it isn't a very believable--nor is it particularly memorable. Indeed, only two days after I finished reading it, I have considerable difficulty recalling the names of the major characters, much less the convolutions of the plot.
And convoluted it is indeed. Fay Hubbard, a 50-something woman, has left her husband and come to rural Vermont to run a B&B--but her first guest proves to be the property's former owner, an elderly and eccentric woman who has escaped from her retirement home with the aid of a younger but equally eccentric niece. And when a decaying skeleton is unearthed on the family farm... well, it just might be the old lady's long-missing husband. Then again, it might have something to do with that mysterious women's retreat down the road. Or the long-ago suicide of the local lady-killer. Or the mean old man who spies on the women's retreat. You just never know.
Throughout the book, Wright presents us with a number of less-than-likable male characters and then counters them with a host of women who have been made unhappy by men--most often through bad marriages, but with the occasional bout of spousal abuse, kidnapping, and rape thrown in for emphasis. In the hands of another writer, this might actually add up to an interesting statement, but since Wright's characters are more akin to a Saturday morning cartoon than reality, it ultimately reads like the writer is having a personal snit. And when all is said and done, none of it really has much to do with the story itself.
All in all, Wright reads rather like a wannabe Rita Mae Brown without any sense of humor. Yes, you can get through it, and yes, it is actually painless so to do. But there's much better stuff out there, so give HARVEST OF BONES a miss.

Homey, but polished; a 'fun' mystery.......1999-02-14
Enjoyed the development of the characters and their 'real' lives. As with all good mysteries, it kept me guessing, picking one then another as the doer of the 'vile deed.' With such down-to-earth characters I was expecting a 'simple' ending, so I was quite unprepared for the expertly woven finale! WOW! I never thought a murder mystery could be so amusing. Looking forward to more by this author.
Vivid, interactive plot with human and humorous characters........1999-01-02
In HARVEST OF BONES, Wright brings us back to the village, farms and fields of Branbury, Vermont to renew our acquaintance with farmer Ruth Willmarth, Colm Hanna, and the other well characterized people who made MAD SEASON such a rewarding read. We now meet feisty old Glenna Flint, fleeing the nursing home, LANDS END, in which her son and daughter-in-law plan to warehouse her. Also new to Wright's world is Fay Hubbard, whose post-divorce therapy involves at attempt to run a B & B, replete with a recalcitrant cow, whom Fay doesn't even know how to milk! Then after Fay's adopted greyhound digs up a ringed finger and its once attached body , the vividly interactive plot is off and running. Even more of a page turner than MAD SEASON, and wonderfully written, HARVEST OF BONES will keep you sitting by your imaginary woodstove on a subzero evening in Branbury, Vermont, until you reluctantly turn the last page.

Bone Harvest.......2006-04-18
There were so many characters involved with this book I forgot who was who, and who to think was commiting the crime. Took the fun out of it. The only reason I read it in the first place was because it's based in my home state of Wisconsin, and a little over an hours away.
Good mystery, sad story.......2006-03-22
I like this series. If you haven't read this series, start at the first one as characters develope from the beginning. I like the way Ms. Logue weaves the past story into the present, makes it very interesting.
Pretty Good Mystery.......2005-05-05
This book is one of three mysteries I picked up for vacation reading. It follows classic mystery conventions to a fault, becoming fairly predictable. Both of the other books I chose, Excursion to Tindari and, especially, Summer of the Big Bachi, are far superior. But, if you want a fairly good quick read that won't upset your lazy afternoons at the beach, this one will work.
The writing seems forced and is especially weak when it wanders off into the protagonist's boring personal life (yes, of course her kid is cute and precocious). Without even reading the dust jacket, the writing style, stock characters, and narrative emphasis clue you in that the author is an upstanding country lady right out of Lake Woebegone. I'm sure she grows organic vegetables when not writing poetry. Maybe the writing would be more interesting if she spent some time in a grittier locale.
Buried secrets.......2004-08-23
Claire Watkins, Deputy Sheriff in Fort Antoine, Wisconsin is back. This time she is investigating a fifty-year-old murder of an entire family that came to her attention while investigating the theft of pesticide. Shortly thereafter plants and people start being poisoned and it all points back to the long ago death of the Schuler's, a farm family consisting of two parents and five young children.
Mary Logue has written a very compelling story interweaving past and present. Both past and present characters were intriguing. It took a little effort to keep everyone straight, but it was well worth it. The story was suspenseful and though I found the ending to be a bit weak it did not detract from the overall enjoyment of the story.
Chilling and sad.......2004-07-19
Bone Harvest is the fourth entry in the Claire Watkins series, and is the first one that I have read-but I am looking for the first three books now! The setting for Bone Harvest is a small Wisconsin farm town that does not have, or usually need, many law enforcement resources. However, fifty years ago, a brutal mass murder in an isolated farmhouse eliminated an entire family and the police never found the killer.
Using the quiet farm community with its violent history as a background, Mary Logue develops an absorbing story focusing on strange events that begin taking place shortly before the fiftieth anniversary of the crime. Pesticides stolen from the local farming co-operative reappear, first poisoning a garden, then a flock of chickens, and finally people at an outing. Claire Watkins begins to draw connections to the long ago killings when an anonymous letter writer provides hints to the local newspaper.
Carefully tying together situations from today with characters from the past, Bone Harvest leads the reader to a conclusion that is simultaneously chilling and sad. Well written, suspenseful, and demonstrating sensitivity and empathy, I would recommend Bone Harvest to anyone.

great product for Trekers, good price.......2007-07-31
Love this in my Star Trek collection. Helps you to remember all of the great episodes of this series.
Great companion for DVD collection.......2007-03-23
We have the complete series on DVD, but only watch infrequently. We could never identify an episode by just the title. This is like a TV guide because it gives a brief synopsis of each episode. It also has interesting behind-the-scenes stories. It is worth the price.
Must have.......2007-02-20
This is a must have for any STAR TREK fan. A very useful guide filled with vast amounts of info makes it an essential tool for navigating your way through the STNG series.
A good help to the series.......2006-11-10
It presents many interesting info about the begining of the series, so you could read about the casting processes. Of course it has a good explanation of the main chapters over the 7 years. The only bad thing about it is that the photos are B&W.
Helpful guide to Star Trek Next Generation Fans.......2006-08-08
I purchased this Star Trek Companion primarily for my hubby. We have the other Companion for seasons 1-5. We enjoyed reading it and each day we would read what the next episode was going to be on t.v. that night. But we were so disappointed that we couldn't go on for the next seasons. When I saw this book on Amazon, I was thrilled and we just LOVE the book. Of course it has the other seasons, but we now can go on and what is such a extra treat is that the Companion has the Star Trek Next Generation's movies reviews. I am not disappointed nor sorry that I bought this book. It is WORTH the money.

The food at The 2nd Ave. Deli is what your grandmother, mother, or a friend's family cooked. (Especially if you are not Jewish but loved being well fed.) From its recipes for Schmalz (the rendered chicken fat indispensable to real, old-fashioned Jewish dishes) and what is arguably the best chopped liver in the world, to Health Salad (a mayonnaise-less, sweet coleslaw), potato kugel (a dense, crisp-crusted pudding), six versions of chicken soup, a Honey Chiffon Cake served for Jewish New Year, and Mandelbrot, an almond-studded Jewish biscotti, this cookbook offers the best of the hefty, soul-satisfying Jewish cooking that is the ultimate comfort food.
Having survived World War II, and, at 19, hungry to succeed, Abe Lebewohl arrived in New York City in 1950, a Jewish immigrant from Russia. His first job was working in a deli on Coney Island. In 1954, he took over the tiny luncheonette near New York's bustling Lower East Side, which he renamed the 2nd Ave. Deli. From that day forward, he looked after his customers (and everyone else he felt needed it) with spontaneous generosity. The stories in this book from his daughter and other people who knew Abe bring to life the passion and love he served along with the best authentic Jewish home cooking--making it clear why he was called the Mayor of Second Avenue. The deli, a magnet for tourists and New York City locals, is now also a memorial to Abe Lebewohl, who was killed in 1996 during a robbery after the restaurant had closed for the night. His daughter wrote this cookbook as a memorial to him, as well as to share the family's recipes for elemental Jewish cooking. Its 166 recipes, black-and-white photographs, and inspiring text make this a joyful celebration by his family and friends. --Dana Jacobi
Book Description
The Second Avenue Deli has been an internationally renowned Gotham landmark for nearly half a century. Over the years, its founder, Abe Lebewohl, provided the best Jewish fare in town, transforming his tiny ten-seat Village eatery into a New York institution.
The Second Avenue Deli Cookbook contains more than 160 of Abe Lebewohl's recipes, including all of the Deli's peerless renditions of traditional Jewish dishes: chicken soup with matzo balls, chopped liver, gefilte fish, kasha varnishkes, mushroom barley soup, noodle kugel, potato latkes, blintzes, and many more. These versatile dishes are perfect for any occasion--from holiday dinners to Sunday brunches with friends and family.
The late Abe Lebewohl was a great restaurateur in the showman tradition and a well-known and much-loved New York personality. His famous Deli attracted hundreds of celebrity patrons, many of whom have graciously contributed to this cookbook not only personal reminiscences but also recipes, running the gamut from Morley Safer's family brisket to Paul Reiser's formula for the perfect egg cream. A wonderful blend of New York and Jewish history and mouthwatering recipes, The Second Avenue Deli Cookbook provides a delicious taste of nostalgia.

Recipes for me and my children.......2004-07-07
This book is fabulous. I originally saw it in the library and borrowed it. After borrowing it three times, I decided to buy it. I've made just about everything in the book and many of these foods are the same foods I remember my grandmother making. The gribbinis is one I remember very fondly. I still have memories of my jewish grandmother serving it to my dad at her kitchen table in Brooklyn, New York when I was about 10 years old.
I've introduced my sons who are 15 and 18 to many of these dishes and so far they have loved every single one of them. The recipes are easy to follow and best of all, they are just about fool-proof. I didn't have any problem with any of the recipes. Just when I think one recipe can't be outdone, I try another and it is just as good.
A MUST HAVE for anyone who wants to learn about jewish cooking and for jews who grew up in NYC and had eastern european family. These foods are the type of jewish cooking that can be appreciated by anyone, even if they are not jewish.
