Book Description

An apparent student suicide has brought medical examiner Sara Linton to the local college campus, along with her ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver. But a horribly mutilated corpse yields up few answers. And a suspicious rash of subsequent "suicides" suggests that a different kind of terror is stalking the youth of Heartsdale, Georgia -- a nightmare that is coming to prey on Sara Linton's loved ones.

A small town is being transformed into a killing ground. And the key to a sadistic murderer's motive and identity may be held in the unsteady hands of a campus security guard -- a former police detective driven from the force by the hellish memories that will never leave her. Lena Adams survived the unthinkable and has paid a devastating price. Now the survival of future victims may depend upon her ... when she can barely protect herself.

2 out of 5 stars Mistakes Overshadow Even Mayhem and Unsympathetic Characters.......2007-08-21

Since others have addressed the continuous decline of Lena and unsympathetic characters, I'll focus on one major unexplicable mistake and another that even a casual viewer of CSI would catch. Why didn't some--copy editor, line editor?--catch the author's colossal mistake of identifying a shotgun as a rifle. This mistaken identity was repeated over and over. Didn't anyone involved in this book know the difference between a rifle and a shotgun?

Secondly, just about anyone who watches Law and Order, CSI or other crime shows would know that the depth of a knife wound is measured, the tip of a broken tip lodged in the body would be matched to the type of knife and the four-inch blade of a pocket knife couldn't reach from the surface of a burly chest to a shoulder blade.

Mistakes like this lower respect for the author and publisher.

4 out of 5 stars Lena lost me for a while, but brought me back.......2007-07-31

I admit, I do not like Lena very much in the Grant County series. She is BITTER, and that deserves to be in all capital letters. I wish she would take control of things rather than let them happen to her, no matter how rough and tumble she thinks she is. But, this book, the third in the Grant County series, left me stunned, even though it was mostly about Lena.

The third Grant County book takes us back to Sara and Jeffrey. They are more or less back together, but Sara is cautious (rightly so) because of Jeffrey's infidelity. When called upon to investigate an apparent suicide of a university student, Sara brings her very pregnant sister along for the ride. While at the scene, her sister is brutally attacked and hospitalized. What kind of monster would beat and nearly murder a pregnant woman? Soon we will find out as Jeffrey and Sara are pulled into the investigation.

Their efforts, however, are just the backdrop of this story, as Lena is the main focus. Lena has since resigned from the police force and now has a job as a university security guard. She knows things she is not telling Jeffrey about this student's death. Among them, it just so happens that her therapist is the student's mother. She is living, granted, in an odd situation, taking temporary residence on campus with her dead sister's gay lover, Nan, and the two of them becoming friendly if not out of genuine friendship than at least a sense of loneliness that Lena's sister has left them. And, oddly enough, she has a boyfriend who she met in a yoga class who has a shaddy past and a violent nature (he wears those long sleeves all the time because of the Nazi / skinhead tattoos). This will only spell trouble, yet, it fits with Lena's sense of self destruction and feelings of helplessness. And on top of that, there's a killer in their midst once again.

While Lena lost me for a little while in terms of her bitter nature, sadly, as I an a lot of readers can relate, we have all been where she is at some point. A man who is a loser, stupid, insecure, cowardly, angry at the world, etc. somehow hitches their wagon to a woman (or vice versa), and chips away at the woman's self esteem because it makes them feel powerful. We've all been there, I don't care who you are or the extent of your experiences. I am now at the point in life where I am not afraid anymore. I see a man for his lies and whatever games he intends to play, and I tell him where to go and I don't let him make me feel guilty. Instead, I allow myself to feel superior like one of those men do. Stand me up? Blow off an appointment? Well that's not right. I will hope that Lena will overcome this abusive relationship, and I hope she will rise above.

1 out of 5 stars A Faint Cold Fear.......2007-06-12

I got about three fourths through the book and couldn't take anymore. I doubt seriously if I'll ever finish it. I just got fed up with the characters, particularly Lena and Jeff.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT WRITING.......2007-05-08

LOVE HER BOOKS ORDERED ALL OF THEM, FEEL LIKE I KNOW SARA AND JEFFERY.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2007-03-01

I loved this book. It is definitly worth your time to take a full day and read it all at once. Karin Slaughter is one of the best authors I've read in a long time. I would put her up against Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series, and she would probably win. This book is wonderfuly horrific. You can almost see the crime scenes like you are there. I couldn't put it down.

This book is in keeping with Daley's usual standards of quality, with well-drawn, realisitic characters and relationships, an intricate and twisting plot, and plenty of gritty action. Indeed, Daley's works make most others of this genre seem almost amateurish by comparison.

"E-book extra: ""Criminal Minds: Laura Lippman Interviews Karin Slaughter"" The third pulse-pounding novel in the Grant County series from the New York Times-bestselling author of Blindsighted and Kisscut. Sara Linton, medical examiner in the small town of Heartsdale, GA, is called out to an apparent suicide on the local college campus. The mutilated body provides little in the way of clues -- and the college authorities are eager to avoid a scandal -- but for Sara and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, things don't add up. Two more suspicious suicides follow, and a young woman is brutally attacked. For Sara, the violence strikes far too close to home. And as Jeffrey pursues the sadistic killer, he discovers that ex-police detective Lena Adams, now a security guard on campus, may be in possession of crucial information. But, bruised and angered by her expulsion from the force, Lena seems to be barely capable of protecting herself, let alone saving the next victim.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Not A Comfortable Read.......2004-09-25

There is a cluster of suicides at a college in a small town in Georgia. Dr. Sara Linton is a pediatrician and part time medical examiner for the county and her ex-husband is the police chief. They begin the investigation, then Sara's sister is viciously attacked and the suicides are starting to look suspicious. They may be homicides. Some of the characters that people this book are pretty strange. I didn't realize this was a continuation in a series until I was well into the story. Maybe I would have had more sympathy for the reoccurring characters if I had read the previous books. I had a problem believing in Sara Linton as a doctor. I may be unfairly comparing her character to that of Gwen Hunter's Dr. Rhea Lynch who seems to me a very competent doctor. There are several very graphic descriptions of the crime scenes and some fairly explicit sex scenes, that might not be for everyone. This was not a comfortable read. But, like a particularly bad car accident, it was hard to look away.

                Book Description

Before Robert Jordan conquered national bestseller lists with his phenomenally popular Wheel of Time saga, he revived the legendary fantasy hero, Conan the Cimmerian. These widely acclaimed adventures introduced the world-famous barbarian to a whole new generation of enthusiastic readers. Now, Tor Books is proud to present three of Robert Jordan's best full-length Conan novels, complete in their entirety, in one deluxe hardcover omnibus.Conan the Invincible: Less than nineteen years old, and new to the snares and enticements of civilization, the young Conan must join forces with Karela, a dangerously seductive female bandit, to storm the palace of Amanar, a supremely evil necromancer, and confront the dreaded Eater of Souls.Conan the Defender: As revolution brews in the shadowy streets of Belverus, Conan braves the traps and treacheries of the Royal Palace of the Dragon. Pursued by the luscious and shameless Sularia, the mighty warrior challenges a magic-spawned menace that cannot die: the invincible Simulacrum of Albanus.Conan the Unconquered:Conan defies the sorcerous power if the Cult of Doom for the sake of a beautiful young woman known only as Yasbet. From the glory of fabled Aghrapur, capital of Turan, to the demon-haunted wastes of the greatest hero of a bygone era of high adventure. Here are three powerful sagas, featuring all the storytelling magic and epic splendor that have made Robert Jordan one of the most beloved fantasy authors of our time.

4 out of 5 stars Wizards to kill, women to save........2007-06-08

This is a collection of three Conan books by Jordan that were originally published in the early 1980's. Jordan does a fair job of representing one of the all-time-favorite sword and sorcery heroes, portraying him as the hard, no-nonsense, lover of gold and women that Robert E. Howard introduced so long ago. These stories are nothing like Jordan's later work with the epic Wheel of Time series, but they are not meant to be. The Conan Chronicles are fast-paced, exciting, simple, and predictable, a guilty pleasure for lovers of old-school fantasy. All three books involve evil wizards bent on obtaining power at the cost to the masses, and in all three Conan finds himself in a to-the-death battle with said wizards. One thing that stands out in these books is the blatant stereotypes and cliches that Jordan's characters take on. Wizards are dark and sinister, women are young and beautiful (and usually naked), men are greedy and dirty, and almost everyone is poor and desperate. Oily and unclean Iranistanis, and sneaky and deadly assassins (ninjas) from the far-east were particularly amusing to me.

The first book, Conan the Invincible, tells of Conan accepting a job that turns out to be more than he expected. A strange wizard pays him to steal some jewels from the king of Zamora, but somebody beats him to it. As he tracks the thieves, he encounters a number of interesting characters that'll show up in following novels, including Hordo and Karela. Evil wizards and snake men pose quite a challenge to the young Conan, but nothing he can't handle.

In Conan The Defender (Conan), our hero finds himself embroiled in a plot to overthrow the king of Nemedia. Lots of double dealing and behind-the-scene scheming make this one read almost like a mystery, with Conan playing the part of the detective. Once again, the antagonist is a dark and evil sorcerer with aims on the throne, and once again Conan cleaves through his enemies like a hot knife through butter. Hordo and Karela reappear here to aid (or hinder?) Conan in his goals. Compared to the first book, this one was more enjoyable to me, with a slightly more complex plot and with the characters becoming better developed.

The third book, Conan the Unconquered (Conan), is my personal favorite. In this tale Conan finds himself traveling to distant lands to search for the means to slay a necromancer heading the 'Cult of the Doomed'. The pace is very quick and the overall plot is better developed than the first two books. The opposition to Conan and the dangers he faces seem more deadly and his new traveling companions add flavor to this one.

All three books are enjoyable and simple. If you come for the right reasons (pure shallow entertainment) you'll be pleased.

3 out of 5 stars ok, not a Jordan masterpiece, but good........2007-02-24

Delivered quickly, as advertised quality. This is a book that is a compilation of three books. It is fairly good, and consistent with the other story lines.

5 out of 5 stars Hatest thou o' insufferable bores.......2007-01-31

I think o' wise and long winded reviewers that you confuse immature with fun. Is going to the opera of the same intellectual value as riding a roller coaster, of course not. But I know which one I'd rather do. And like a roller coaster, Jordans Conans may share the same basic structure but they're different enough that I have and will ride them all. As for Howard, I've read Howard, more than just his Conans, and call me blasphemer and throw me from your ranks, but I prefer Jordan.

ps. Reviewers, if a book is such a blight to your eyes that you cant find it in yourself to finish it, find it in yourself to not review it.

well if you haven't to say it was a terrible abomination good for a feebleminded dolt will be the nicest thing i'll ever even utter about this insufferable atrocity.

A disgrace to RJ legacy I could not even finish this this thing the pages are not even worthy to wipe the bottom of a swampy garbage dump / nuclear waste plant!

and I love most books but this excuse for one had the most dumb insufferable woman crazy self obsessed character ever and the other one is a supposable self-sufficient self reliable high standard not man crazy woman who chases the main character

and if that dose not deter you from reading this book then this book had a really predictable unimaginative plots I've seen since -ever!!

one reviewer said its for the younger crowd I beg to differ I really don't think its for a young crowed only an immature crowd.as you have no doubt realized if i could give it ZERO STARS I WOULD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Conan the Slut.......2006-05-23

The Robert Jordan Conan stories are simply horrible. Jordan obviously lacks comprehension of REH's concept, and reduces Conan into an absurd characiture and mockery of what he once was in the original short stories. This misinterpretation isn't just limited to Jordan, but also to efforts like those of L. Sprague De Camp whose "editing" and chronicling of the original short stories likely made it popular to manipulate, if not outright exploit, REH's works (though credit acknowledged these efforts at least brought REH's work into the public decades after REH's death). There are many problems with Jordan's Conan (not limited to the stories in this edition)-first is Conan being too sophisticated for his alledged age during the stories, often described as being "not yet twenty", which spoils the credibility. Conan's more appealing as a more raw and naive sort of individual because that's what makes him a barbarian, and which makes him more interesting when he gets into trouble. I simply don't believe the character in Jordan's books can be that able to match wits with the intrigues played by corrupt royals or have the true experience to lead military companies at that age-it's balderdash (most 19 yearolds I knew were dumber than a bag of rocks, myself included). Better an older, maturer individual to believe in. But what I find most offensive is Jordan's chauvinistic sensibilities. The world he depicts is not the verbally sensual one of REH's creation as the insight Jordan provides is ultimately shallow in its sexism (it certainly isn't erotic, sexual attitudes when these stories were written not withstanding): women are all doxies and whores in his Conan stories, they seem never of any other profession and there never seem to be old women, or mothers, or children in the settings of his stories, demonstrating Jordan's lack of imagination in creating a variety of characters. All too often he begins and relies on the physical description of the woman in question to be enough for the reader and will always write about how voluptuous the breasts are, regardless if he already commented on the character's breasts already! And these women are always hanging out in taverns or street corners plying their trade instead of working, depicting a rather dismal view of women in general as being incapable of doing anything else but being screwed; whereas REH would portray them as as more human devices with an actual complex function in the world of Conan, the best being Belit who literally leaps off the page as the most vivid, passionate character that's easy to believe in because she's truly fantastic, while Karela is just obnoxious and overused (there's a story in which she tries to kill Conan and ends up having sex with him which comes off as just stupid + there's a scene in which she and her band of cronies get in a fight and she'd naked the whole time). And just as worse is Conan who really comes off as a slut as on average he's depicted as bedding on average 2 different women in any given story (with each tryst ending a chapter in a ludicrously predictable way). Conan is reduced by this as being a mere fornicator, and not the complex man he's supposed to be with "gigantic mirth AND melancholy", qualities wofully missing from Jordan's depiction. Occasionally Jordan's Conan exhibits so moral issues, but they always seem awkward and fake (like in one story where Conan worries about an underage girl becoming a doxy herself). Apart from the mangling of Conan' character, the actual writing is formulmatic: Each story starts with a prologue with a scheming sorcerer or royal about to use mysical means to acquire more power (nearly always sacrificing some nude "chit" of a girl-Jordan's descrition not mine); Conan is usually first met in a tavern and always gets into a fight before the end of a chapter (and always flirts or more with the aformentioned doxy); if Conan gets in with another bunch of rogues, there's always one guy who despises Conan and always dies for it later, usually by Conan's hand. Again after reading Jordan's Conan stories it becomes painfully evident how throwaway these pastiches truly are and one wonder if anyone can write the character outside of REH himself (the comics have been all right-Roy Thomas from Marvel was more respectful I think of the character, and Kurt Busiek doing the Dark Horse series just as much, but Busiek also has difficulty with Conan's sophistication during his early adventurous period). Conan works best as a short story character I think (though REH did write some excellant Conan novels that don't lack in pace)when he gets dropped into a situation and merely touches upon some (often gruesome) insight into the world he lives in. Remember a peer of REH was HP Lovecraft whose stories of cosmic horror hinted at a world beyond our own, something every REH story in some way did. The Jordan stories NEVER do this: they merely drop obstacles into Conan's way (here a demon, here a soldier) to cleve out of his way without a thought, whereas such things as meeting an elephant god or solving a murder in a closed room or finding an ape dressed as a king upon a throne are incidents that would provide any soul who experiences them lessons that would lead to better destinies than acting whorish. Best to read REH's original stories recently collected in new trades, restored in their original glory where the true Conan treads the jeweled kingdoms of the earth beneath his sandled feet.

Conan this time has three women to deal with, although the first, a young nobleman reduced to trying out trulldom is easy, once he finds her employment.

                        1 out of 5 stars Blasphemous.......2007-09-27

I like Michael Dorn as an actor, but not as an author. This book is filled with extremely horrible and unnecessary profanity. You can't get to the storyline past this awful language. It is crude, offensive, and blasphemous. I do not recommend this book to anybody.

                        4 out of 5 stars Cliffhangers..........1999-10-14

Devouring the book in one day I found it an enjoyable read. Yes, there were plenty of inconsistent action, but there were some good twists to keep me on my toes. Being a Star Trek fan made me buy the book, but the story itself kept me with it until I finished.

The action was good...and the setup of the main character was very "renaissance" like with the military to academic background. Yes, I want to be like Tony.

The back of the book is a bit misleading and I was slightly confused, there are books with worse that I have read so I won't hold them accountable for it.

I'm now off to find the second book of the series...

5 out of 5 stars A spectacular twisted view of a fairly common theme.......1999-08-20

Michael Dorn captures your attention early in this brilliant novel and doesn't let go until the last word of the last parragraph. The imagery is the best I've seen in pop Sci-Fi in years! I can honestly say that I haven't been this excited about a sci-fi novel since the first time I read Ringworld.

Miller, the main character, is portrayed in a fashion that allows you to actually think like him, almost anticipating how he will handle each step of his convoluted trip. And, what a trip! The authors propensity to twist and manipulate reality keeps you at the edge of your seat the entire page-flipping, gut wrenching experience.

The last page, though tieing up most of the myriad tendrils of the story, creates whole new questions; leaving the reader thirsty for more of the intoxicating obserdeity of Millers grand trek.

This is a must read for any fan of the limits of imagination, and the excitement of classic Sci-fi. I can hardly wait for the sequel.

3 out of 5 stars A man lost in time/space wanting to do the right thing.......1999-05-27

Michael Dorn has created an interesting black indiana jones named Tony Miller involved in some time/space adventures. But it looks like the book was written individually by the 3 authors and then put together but not very cohesively. Maybe more will be explained in the next novel but the reader should not be as confused as the main character of the novel. I also think the 2 other authors should have had their names on the cover as well as Dorn.

2 out of 5 stars Not so good.......1999-02-18

The book description isn't really accurate . . . the main character HASN'T heard of this crazy island, he happens upon it by chance only after being forced to go there by some 'unknown alien' that is inhabiting his friend's body.

My biggest problem is that the main character doesn't act like a normal person would act in abnormal circumstances. His best friend's mind has been taken over by some alien force and he never once stops to question the guy as to why he's acting so strange - instead thinking that he's been injured by a blow to the head.

I found the book to be full of cliche, not consistent (as if a collaboration where different authors wrote various scenes), and it didn't seem like it knew where it wanted to go. And then to end it with 'to be continued' really lost it for me. I don't think I can read through another in the Time Blender series . . .

Suddenly Aunt Eunice is on the phone explaining, "Aunt Mabel won't be with us for Christmas dinner, she's taking a holiday cruise with her bridge club. So would you be a dear and bring the Cheese Custard Pie this year? The family sure loves that pie." You ponder a moment and remember that the Cheese Custard Pie wasn't half bad, a stout and hearty dish with heavy Midwestern overtones, a bit like Aunt Mabel, in fact. You've eaten the same pie every year for as long as you can remember, your parents ate the same pie, and chances are your grandparents got a little crazy and had a slice or two à la mode. Small wonder Mabel has been wowing the family with Cheese Custard Pie since 1931.

Warm fuzzy memories go suddenly bad when you realize that the success or failure of the family holiday has just been placed squarely upon your shoulders in the form of a dessert you haven't a clue how to cook. Damn that bridge club! A quick call back to Aunt Eunice reveals, "It's simple, honey, all you need is The Joy of Cooking."

In 1931, Mrs. Irma von Starkloff Rombauer was newly widowed and in need of a way to support her family. The celebrated St. Louis hostess struck on the idea of turning her personal recipes and cooking techniques into a book. She self- published The Joy of Cooking: A Compilation of Reliable Recipes with a Casual Culinary Chat, and the legend was born. Aunt Mabels everywhere related to Irma's sensible, fearless approach to the culinary arts, and Chicken à la King, Risotto, and Roasted Spanish Onions found their way onto our tables. The Joy of Cooking quickly became a modern masterpiece, the stuff of legends, the foundation of family dinners everywhere.

This facsimile of the original 1931 edition offers ample proof why The Joy of Cooking, at 15 million copies and counting, remains one of the most popular cookbooks of all time. This is where it all began, and while her Shrimp Wiggle may not be in vogue anymore, a certain pie recipe just might save your family holiday. --Mark O. Howerton

                                      Book Description

In 1931, Irma Rombauer announced that she intended to turn her personal collection of recipes and cooking techniques into a cookbook. Cooking could no longer remain a private passion for Irma. She had recently been widowed and needed to find a way to support her family. Irma was a celebrated St. Louis hostess who sensed that she was not alone in her need for a no-nonsense, practical resource in the kitchen. So, mustering what assets she had, she self-published The Joy of Cooking: A Compilation of Reliable Recipes with a Casual Culinary Chat. Out of these unlikely circumstances was born the most authoritative cookbook in America, the book your grandmother and mother probably learned to cook from. To date it has sold more than 15 million copies.

This is a perfect facsimile of that original 1931 edition. It is your chance to see where it all began. These pages amply reveal why The Joy of Cooking has become a legacy of learning and pleasure for generations of users. Irma's sensible, fearless approach to cooking and her reassuring voice offer both novice and experienced cooks everything they need to produce a crackling crust on roasts and bake the perfect cake. All the old classics are here -- Chicken a la King, Molded Cranberry Nut Salad, and Charlotte Russe to name a few -- but so are dozens of unexpected recipes such as Risotto and Roasted Spanish Onions, dishes that seem right at home on our tables today.

Whether she's discussing the colorful personality of her cook Marguerite, whose Cheese Custard Pie was not to be missed, or asserting that the average woman's breakfast was "probably fruit, dry toast, and a beverage" while the average man's was "fruit, cereal, eggs with ham or bacon, hot bread, and a beverage," the distinctive era in which Irma lived comes through loud and clear in every line. Enter a time when such dishes as Shrimp Wiggle and Cottage Pudding routinely appeared on tables across America.

The book is illustrated with the silhouette cutouts created by Irma's daughter Marion, who eventually wrote later editions of The Joy of Cooking. Marion also created the cover art depicting St. Martha of Bethany, the patron saint of cooking, slaying the dragon of kitchen drudgery. This special facsimile edition contains both Irma's original introduction and a completely new foreword by her son Edgar Rombauer, whose vivid memories bring Irma's kitchen alive for us all today.

                                      1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2007-01-11

I have a falling-apart edition of Joy of Cooking (I think 1964), so I thought I'd try the original edition. What a disappointment. The recipes are extremely brief, without any help as to how to do things, and they look very uninteresting. I sent it back, and (luckily) found the 1964 edition -- absolutely untouched -- don't these people use the book to cook? -- in a local bookstore.

                                      3 out of 5 stars 20 minutes for string beans - LOL.......2006-11-15

I very much enjoyed this book and am encouraged to look into later editions. It's very interesting to see older versions of recipes. I like the smaller size of this hardcover which makes it easy to pick up and carry around for those moments when you want a light read while waiting on line in the post office or something. There is a scary part because there is a joke about a "colored man."

2 out of 5 stars An interesting hitorical relic but fairly useless cookbook for today.......2005-12-18

I grew up in the '50s and my Mother had several cookbooks but "Joy of Cooking" was the bible. All my childhood favorites come from the book and when I moved out on my own it was the basic cookbook on which I relied. I bought a more recent version about 15 to 20 years ago but it wasn't as good. This is NOT the version with which I grew up. It's recipes are few, very dated, and, mostly, uninteresting. If you like oysters there's several.

An interesting read for it's historical and sociologic value but not worth purchasing for the recipes themselves. Frankly, there are no recipes that I would try because either they are boring or they have been updated by more interesting versions.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic re-issue - before major publishing.......2004-07-14

This book is the 1st, as in before they got picked up by a major publisher.

Don't let that kid you. This book is GREAT and professional.

Irma made up the style of cookbook we know today. Listing all ingredients up front etc. A true pioneer.

She took her book to a little printer and had a run made. That book (which this is a faithful copy of) fell into the right hands and the rest was cookbook history.

Fantastic old recipes. Even old German ones, and other euro recipes etc. Not a bland cookbook of old junk. It is all old treasures.

She always made up several variations of a recipe and had friends and acquaintances as a tasters panel. The winning versions of each are in the book.

The Dust jacket is washable with a moist cloth even on her first book, she was a very smart lady.

Buy this book and enjoy recipes that are no longer in the latest JOY. There just isn't room for everything now. And this is the old fashioned way of making them all. I am big on taste!

A must have in the kitchen.

Great book with recipes long since forgotten. Easy to read and easy recipes to prepare. The author original humor still in the book which makes it so much better.
