When a sheriff's detective shows up on former FBI man Terry McCaleb's Catalina Island doorstep and requests his help in analyzing photographs of a crime scene, McCaleb at first demurs. He's newly married (to Graciela, who herself dragged him from retirement into a case in Blood Work), has a new baby daughter, and is finally strong again after a heart transplant. But once a bloodhound, always a bloodhound. One look at the video of Edward Gunn's trussed and strangled body puts McCaleb back on the investigative trail, hooked by two details: the small statue of an owl that watches over the murder scene and the Latin words "Cave Cave Dus Videt," meaning "Beware, beware, God sees," on the tape binding the victim's mouth.

Gunn was a small-time criminal who had been questioned repeatedly by LAPD Detective Harry Bosch in the unsolved murder of a prostitute, most recently on the night he was killed. McCaleb knows the tense, cranky Bosch (Michael Connelly's series star--see The Black Echo, The Black Ice, et al.) and decides to start by talking to him. But Bosch has time only for a brief chat. He's a prosecution witness in the high-profile trial of David Storey, a film director accused of killing a young actress during rough sex. By chance, however, McCaleb discovers an abstruse but concrete link between the scene of Gunn's murder and Harry Bosch's name:

"This last guy's work is supposedly replete with owls all over the place. I can't pronounce his first name. It's spelled H-I-E-R-O-N-Y-M-U-S. He was Netherlandish, part of the northern renaissance. I guess owls were big up there."

McCaleb looked at the paper in front of him. The name she had just spelled seemed familiar to him.

"You forgot his last name. What's his last name?"

"Oh, sorry. It's Bosch. Like the spark plugs."

Bosch fits McCaleb's profile of the killer, and McCaleb is both thunderstruck and afraid--thunderstruck that a cop he respects might have committed a horrendous murder and afraid that Bosch may just be good enough to get away with it. And when Bosch finds out (via a mysterious leak to tabloid reporter Jack McEvoy, late of Connelly's The Poet) that he's being investigated for murder, he's furious, knowing that Storey's defense attorney may use the information to help get his extravagantly guilty client off scot-free.

It's the kind of plot that used to make great Westerns: two old gunslingers circling each other warily, each of them wondering if the other's gone bad. But there's more than one black hat in them thar hills, and Connelly masterfully joins the plot lines in a climax and denouement that will leave readers gasping but satisfied. --Barrie Trinkle

Terrence McCaleb, the retired FBI agent who starred in the bestseller Blood Work, is asked by the LAPD to help them investigate a series of murders that have them baffled. They are the kind of ritualized killings that McCaleb specialized in solving with the FBI, and he is reluctantly drawn from his peaceful new life back into the horror and excitement of tracking down a terrifying homicidal maniac More horrifying still, the suspect who seems to fit the profile that McCaleb develops is someone he has known and worked with in the past: LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch.

4 out of 5 stars Exhaustively detailed, fascinating, and a little dry.......2007-08-31

Connelly covers everything in exhaustive detail, from the process by which Terry (the initially reluctant investigator) profiles the killer---and Bosch, his unlikely suspect---to each moment of the courtroom testimony in Bosch's high-profile case. It rides a fine line between fascinating and dry, illustrative and dull, and I think which side of the line it falls on depends very much on the individual reader. It certainly gave the story a great deal of authenticity, and for people who particularly enjoy following each and every detail of investigation and trial it's ideal. For me, however, the courtroom material in particular stepped over the line into overly-dry, using short, staccato sentences that evoked a court transcript more than anything. I imagine for some people that's a plus, but for me it was a minus.

Connelly also has a tendency to go off on extended tangents about one or another past event. While he does tie them all together in the end and they do all become relevant, it does give the book a rather slow, meandering feel at times. Again, something that some will enjoy while others won't.

This book is obviously very carefully constructed, and I fully believe that each of the things I wasn't entirely thrilled with were done very deliberately and will appeal to some segments of Connelly's audience; I mention them primarily so that you can choose for yourselves whether they're characteristics you'd be likely to enjoy or not. The plot itself is extremely well-constructed and interesting, with several interesting red herrings of various types and quite a few well-detailed characters that I certainly enjoyed spending the length of a book with.

If you enjoy highly-detailed mysteries and procedurals with plenty of detective-work and courtroom drama, then A Darkness More Than Night makes quite a good read.

4 out of 5 stars observing Harry Bosch.......2007-06-16

I've read most of Michael Connelly's work and found this one on par with all the other excellent reads. There were the usual plot flaws that reviewers and I agree on (why wasn't it obvious to McCaleb that Harry was being set-up?) BUT, once again Connelly's great writing helped me easily downplay stuff like that.

Being a fan of the Bosch series, it was cool to see Bosch being observed, scrutinized and analyzed by the main protagonist ex-FBI agent Terry McCaleb (he from a previous Connelly book "Blood Work"). Easy 4 stars.

I have not listened to the book yet. It was sent in a timely manner.

2 out of 5 stars This book won't make you a Connelly's fan........2007-03-26

This was the first book by M. Connelly that I picked and I have to say that if the author is indeed as good as they say then I probably should have chosen his other title.

I gave two stars because I think the author writes a good prose. The book is readable.

As far as plot is concerned, it is simple but weak. It is hard to show what I mean without giving away a story. But frankly, if someone told me in advance what to expect, I would have only said 'thank you' and picked something else to read.

Some folks refer to twists and turns in the plot and I have no idea what they are talking about. What twists and turns???

Warning... what follows may be a spoiler.........

We have this super ex-criminal profiler, who apparently lives and breathes only when he works. He's been doing this for a loooooong time. So he is an expert in profiling a criminal. He studied the crime scene, made couple inquiries and wholaaa.... he's got a suspect. The crime scene construction was suppose to lead to the name of the "killer." Which it did. But even I, who understands nothing about the profiling, know that there is not one killer on earth who would committ a crime and provide clues to investigators that spell out their name (THEIR FULL NAME!!!). Oh, but our 'expert' thought that this was ok. And you don't have to be too smart to guess that he was, of course, wrong. I knew it from the moment he named a suspect, but our expert did not realize it until way later into the book.

This plotting is what killed the book for me. Very sloppy and I cannot believe M. Connelly sold it to publishers. No first timer would get anywhere with this kind of plot.

Something else stood out..... According to M. Connelly cell phones only chirp. In this novel they did every other page (ok, almost every other page). If you decide to read this book you'll know what I am talking about.

4 out of 5 stars First timer: somewhere between three and four.......2006-12-02

I don't recall ever hearing about Michael Connelly until spotting a couple of his books in a pile of giveaways. Most online reviews gave him high marks, so I took the thinner of the two first.

Connelly moves the story right along, with a fast pace and not a lot of distractions or parallel threads unrelated to the major plot. The writing is crisp and not especially complex, and the characters are fairly sharply defined, even for a reader who had no familiarity with any of the other books. Both Bosch and McCaleb have enough flaws to be reasonably interesting, and I liked their little meeting at the end.

I assume that Connelly doesn't make a habit of hooking the story to the painter of the same name in other books, as presumably he can't use that more than once. I waffled on that as a plot device, in that it would seem to be way too much of a clue or too far-fetched for a real scenario. McCaleb fell for the idea too quickly, in my opinion. At least the paintings were suitably dark, as opposed to having some character named Grant Wood kill people with a pitchfork.

The reader will grasp immediately that the murders will be related and not just two independent stories to be solved ala CSI. I had a pretty good idea of the basic outcome well before the end. Even so, there was enough doubt in my mind and suspense to keep my engagement.

For this new reader, the inclusion of characters from other books was OK, as it feeds the regular fans or people reading the books in rough order. They neither added a lot nor caused too much distraction. As an example, Jack McEvoy could probably have been replaced just as easily by a new character, but no big deal.

                Book Description

McCaleb, now married to Graciela and with a baby daughter, is persuaded to take a case from the LA County Sheriff's office. He is asked to profile the killer of an unsolved murder. The victim was a scuzzball who six years earlier had been arrested by Harry Bosch for murder but then released uncharged by the DA's office. In doing what he does best - reviewing the crime scene tapes and investigative records - McCaleb picks up a clue the sheriffs missed, a plastic owl left at the crime scene that the sheriffs thought belonged to the victim. McCaleb discovers that it was left by the killer as a message. He traces this symbol to an icon used as a sign of evil in Renaissance paintings, and finds that one of the most frequent users of this iconography was none other than Hieronymus Bosch, which makes Harry a suspect. The book becomes an examination of Harry Bosch through the eyes of McCaleb. Meanwhile Bosch is in the midst of a high stakes trial being covered in the press by Jack McEvoy. Bosch was lead investigator on a murder case that saw the arrest of the son of a wealthy and powerful man. As the trial progress the defence strategy becomes clear: put Bosch on trial instead of the rich kid, make the focus on Bosch and his methods. McCaleb and Bosch, first at odds, must now work together to clear Harry's name …

I read the Complete Book of Swords just to introduce myself to an older fantasy writer whom I hadn't read before, and I read this one just as a follow-up, perhaps hoping the tale would get better. It didn't. The story is simplistic, with an absolute minimum of characterization. There are a couple of clever moments (e.g. Amintor's desperate gamble while holding Woundhealer), but overall, there's just not much good fantasy "meat" here. I might recommend this at a 8th-9th grade reading level, i.e. if someone that age really needed to read a fantasy book. But even then, Alexander's Prydain Chronicles are far superior.

                    1 out of 5 stars Ugh.......1999-09-27

This is the sort of review that I hate to write. I'm not a great writer so I hesitate to criticize anyone's work...but it must be done.

This book is simplistic. The reader can easily see that it was written in the mid-80s, before content and quality became necessary in top-notch fantasy. Saberhagen takes different fantasy concepts, throws them into a blender and out comes the story.

The biggest mistake is using a straight-forward narrative style. Saberhagen uses no more than 2 to 3 lines of dialogue per page. He covers immense amounts of action with only a few lines..completely removing any drama that could have been there.

Additionally, the first 20 pages had some of the most atrocious grammer I've ever seen. Saberhagen liberally used the passive tense and sprinkled the pages with fragments and run-on sentences (I hate to point out the last two because I believe an author has the right to put them into his own work) To his credit, the book gets better. But it's still an inferior work.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Adventure Fantasy.......1997-10-09

Woundhealers Story continues the story of the 12 God-Forged magical swords begun in the First Book of Swords. The first three swords books, in turn, have some significant connections to the Empire of the East trilogy. The Lost Swords books series continues on for eight highly engaging volumes. There is also a collection of novelettes, an Armoury of Swords, wherein Saberhagen invited other authors to play in the Swords universe. All of the Swords volumes contain Saberhagen's fast paced, but careful plotting, many memorable characters and scenes, clever situations and dilemmas based on the varied powers and limitations of the swords, moments of sheer dread and terror built on malevolence of the demons, romance, wit, subtle satire during the occasional encounters with the Blue Temple (worshipers of wealth) and the rival Red Temple (purveyers of gambling, drugs, and prostitution), fascinating villains, ranging from dread wizards and the admirably resourceful Baron Amnitor, to the semi-tragic Prince Muran of the Mindsword's story, and engaging protagonists, ranging from children caught up in intrigues of their elders, an array of male and female heros, and on to the mysterious Emperor. I'd read these volumes originally when they first appeared, and recently, spurred on by _An Armory of Swords_ went back and re-read them in a blitz. Marvelous, engaging work. Worth both reading, and, as I found, worth re-reading. For example, I found a fascinating resonance between the unanswered questions at the end of the Third Book of Swords, and the final revelations about the Emperor. But Saberhagen is best experienced with the surprises intact. He makes the journey as rewarding as the end. Woundhealer's tale begin's with Prince Mark's attempt to acquire the healing sword in order to heal his blind son Adrian. All of the Lost Swords books involve Prince Mark and/or his relations in power struggles related to the swords, and various parties who seek to control them, with one exception, that being Stonecutter's story, which stands apart as a Holmes-like fantasy mystery. I remember reading WoundHealer years ago - it was a terrific read, I thought it was the best of the Sword books. It could easily stand on its own as a movie (not kidding - and I would definitely pay to see it).

I was a fan of the entire series but WoundHealer was the one that really had a magical feeling to it - in fact, I think I'll read it again after I finish Ardneh's Sword - which I just started :) !!

Lindy and her brother Randy were just ordinary young people, all alone, struggling through life until the day they saw a glimmering light from within the forest. What they found took them away from their simple lives and stranded them in an amazing alien civilization.

Alone on a distant world, they are taken in by a caring explorer and his crew, and invited to join him on his bold adventure to search the universe itself.

Randy and Lindy accept his offer and partake on an epic journey that leads them upon an Infinite Odyssey to strange new planets, exciting adventures, and dangerous foes, all in hope of returning to their Earth.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar book from a small town........2005-04-29

This book surprised me because i personally know the author and his family. I didnt know he had it in him. The storyline is very good and the plot has such unique twists and turns, it blows away all the other books ive read. The character development is great and the area the story is weaved upon is very unique, but yet is not completely far-fetched. For all you Sci-Fi fans, this author is on his way up, and this book is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Infinite Odyssey=Infinite Fun for the reader.......2004-11-18

This book is a suprisingly good and fast paced read. The book has rich and endearing characters. I couldn't believe it, but the lead character Aktar, is a giant regal bird, it's soo cool. The Sci-fi inventions are awesome. And in the back of the book there is even a glossary with definations and more info on the wild and new lands, tech toys and creatures. Even better a smashing good ending, really surprising, couldn't of quessed the ending , just like Agatha Christie. So I don't want to spoil it for you, but lets just say,it all makes sense in the end. I actually know the Author and this is the real deal. First Chris Paloni, now Jay Dingler. The future is now, finally some Science Fiction from an Author under 50 or who isn't dead.

                            4 out of 5 stars a fantasic voyage.......2004-11-18

This book is a great read. The characters are very easy to relate to. The story moves very fast and you do not want to put it down. The art work helps the reader to see what in fact is going on in the story. I enjoyed every chapter. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I have.

5 out of 5 stars The Infinite Odyssey is a space quest that really delivers!.......2004-11-18

The Infinite Odyssey is just a blast to read and when I found out the author was a teenage boy I was so pleasantly surprised. What's in the water lately that 2 teenage boys (Chris Paolini that wrote Eragon and Jay Dingler that wrote Infinite Odyssey) can put out such refreshing reads in a genre that's been around for awhile. Infinite Odyssey has lots of cool gadgets, bad meanies and a smart-alecky heroine named Tabitha that keeps you rooting for the good guys to triumph in this traveling in far off galaxies space epic. An added bonus are the multiple lush color illustrations seeded throughout the book showcasing the aliens and major characters as well as exotic foreign planets that are imaginatively created. I look forward to seeing what else the author comes out with in the future, this kid is the real deal.

I am disagreeing with most reviews, if you do not like goat cheese, don't buy this. If you have no access to buying wild mushrooms, don't buy this. If you don't like tuna, salmon or lamb, don't buy this. I was looking for a more practical appetizer book with common things I buy each week at the grocery, many recipes with goat cheese, caviar, salmon, tuna, and lamb just don't fit my lifestyle or my budget. If you like eggplant, oysters, lamb and swordfish recipes then go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Fast but Fabulous.......2002-09-13

I have had the pleasure of attending Hugh's culinary cooking camp in Napa and own all of his cookbooks. There is a reason.
Hugh's recipes are simple to prepare, always have a "wow" factor, and above all else, taste fantastic. The other important ingredient in Hugh's cookbooks is that the recipes are 100% trustworthy. This is not something that I will say for many cookbooks. His recipes are designed for the home cook and have been tested and re-tested so that you can trust the recipe.

So stock up your pantry with hoisin, coconut milk, and yster sauce and have fun making his recipes! Some of my favourites in the book are the Pan-Fried Scallop Dumplings with Coconut -Herb Glaze, the Spicy Thai Meatballs Wrapped in Lettuce, and he Quesadillas with Barbecued Meat and Brie. All are wonderful.

Hugh makes cooking fun and his flavours are intense and exciting. You won't be disappointed at your next dinner party!

5 out of 5 stars Easy as Pie.......2005-08-10

The book itself is beautifully done- easy to follow recipes, clear how-to photos, and big photos of the finished dishes. It's fun just to look through the pages, even if you're not planning to cook that particular day. The recipes offer something for everyone- easy soups to desserts, chocolates to fruits, meats, fish, vegetarian. You can create fantastic dishes that look gourmet-complicated, and try new flavors without investing in a long list of weird ingredients. If you have the basics in your pantry, you'll be able to make nearly every dish. As for the desserts, keep a supply of heavy/double cream, as it seems to be one of the "3-4" ingredients in most dessert recipes. (Although, if you do have the cream, you'll be tempted to make a new dessert each night!)

I love to cook, and have shelves of cookbooks, but this has quickly become my favorite cookbook because the recipes are both simple and gorgeous. I got my copy on sale, but it's well worth buying at any price. Enjoy.

This is a recipe book for quick dips, spreads and appetizers that take less than 20 minutes to fix. Most of them serve 6 - 8 guests, but I have been able to increase it as needed. All of the recipes that I tried everyone loved and I have been asked for several recipes. This is THE cookbook that I reach for when I'm planning to have friends over. I highly recommend it.

Although I have tons of cookbooks, this is, by far, the most used of them all. Each recipe is delicious and I never tire of trying out something new on my friends as this is a no-fail cookbook. If you like to make something unusual, get this book! This cookbook is to hors d'oeuvres as the Joy of Cooking is to basic recipes. Can't live without...

                              2 out of 5 stars This is a Hors D'Oeuvres book?????.......2001-11-16

I just received this book, and I'm very disappointed to say the least. This book is more about sauces and vinaigrettes not appetizers.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have!.......2000-09-07

I love this cookbook! I have a large collection of cookbooks, some that mostly just sit on the shelf, but this is one of the few that I turn to when I need a recipe - it is almost completely worn out! I just ordered a copy of this book for a friend of mine that raved about some of the dishes that I prepared for a party of 70 last week. This is one of the few cookbooks that offer several different serving suggestions for each dish, ranging from simple to spectacular - and ways to prepare ahead of time. So when it is time to make something for a party, I usually double the reciped so that my freezer is ready for an impromptu get together!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for party-giving!.......1999-05-03

I have made many recipes from this book and they have all been fabulous. The make-ahead tips are extremely helpful and actually let you prepare for a party weeks in advance. Many of the recipes can be frozen, and they taste great when thawed. This book has enabled me to feel at ease about throwing a Christmas party for 60 people!

4 out of 5 stars This book is a treasure........1998-07-20

I've been searching for the best "apps" ideas that are easy, addictive, and visually stimulating for years. This book is all three (the hardest to find being the addictive!). Many of the recipes are also excellent for sauces for main courses and pastas. I am thrilled with the discovery of this exciting and versitile book.

                                  Book Description

The first cookbook by one of today's fastest rising television food hosts, with a new show launching on Discovery Health in September 2007

Sam Zien is a regular guy who cooks great food. No cutesy patter. No foo-foo ingredients. Just easy, great tasting stuff that real people can make, served up with lots of humor. All of which has made his Sam the Cooking Guy show one of the hippest, most refreshing additions to the television food line-up in years. Now, responding to requests from his legions of fans, Sam has collected over 125 of his favorite recipes. All of them are big in taste and small in effort-dishes that anyone can make. From Pastrami Benedict and Tomato & Potato Chip Sandwiches to Buffalo Chicken Pizza and Doughnutmisu ("tiramisu" made with powdered doughnuts), this simple collection of recipes is guaranteed to turn even a slacker into a kitchen star.

Sam Zien (San Diego, CA) is the creator and host of the eight-time Emmy Award-winning Sam the Cooking Guy, which is broadcast on Cox Channel 4 in San Diego. Sam launched his show in 2002 after growing bored with his biotechnology job, and today he is one of California's most visible food world personalities, with sold-out cooking classes, a spokesperson gig for Newcastle Brown Ale, a Discovery Health Channel series, and Cooking Guy streaming media segments for Nokia phones.
