Snail's pace..........2007-01-09
I am still struggling with getting interested in the story itself. Action and explanations are tedious and slow for me to absorb. I bought it for the title and because I generally love British mysteries or detective-type unfoldings.
Sorry. I will finish it; I will pass it on (with a caveat)to a friend.

Happy combination of history & mystery: One of the finest in a good series.......2006-04-26
This is one of the other sides of all those Regency novels I read: Captain Lacey is one of the half-pay officers that match-making mamas try to keep their daughters away from. He is also a man of great integrity, deep feeling, and an unfortunate tendency to lose his temper.
Ashley Gardner is succeeding at something very difficult here. Her character is flawed, in some ways more admirable than likeable. It's a very fine line that Gardner is walking successfully. Lacey often does things that are dumb, but they are so well handled as to be part of a full human being, not cheap plot devices. I was afraid that the character James Denis was going to ruin this book by turning it into a melodrama, but a this point, I think the author is up to the task on maintaining it as a side plot, without lurching into bathos.
Lacey has left the military after a dispute with his beloved and despised former mentor and commanding officer that resulted in a permanent injury to his leg. He has a respectable (but not noble) lineage, but no private income, so he has settled into cheap quarters. He has made friends with some of the ton, as well as lower class people such as an actress and his old sergeant, now a Bow Street Runner. This enables him to view society at many levels, as well as enlist the forces of the law, such as they were in those days, in his investigations.
The supporting cast contains many well-developed characters with idiosyncracies and lives outside of being his sidekicks. Their relationships with Lacey and one another are sometimes complex. I also like that Lacey's life develops: he makes new friends, takes jobs, romances women and worries about his long-eloped wife and daughter. So often, series characters get stuck in a rut of repeating circumstances, but that doesn't seem to be a danger here.
As a matter of taste, these novels are somewhat melancholy, but goodness triumphs often enough so that they don't get morbid. The victims and perpetrators vary as to how sympathetic they are.
I am keeping all my volumes in this series, because I know that I will want to go back and reread as I go along. The reader who likes these may like these other novels, similarly of people skirtng the boundry between the middle-class and the gentry:
T.F. Banks' Memoirs of a Bow Street Runner (beginning with The Thief Taker) set in the same period;
Set in the last half of the 18th century are:
Hannah March's series about tutor Robert Fairfax, (I believe Complaint of the Dove is first);
Bruce Alexander's Bow Street Magistrate Sir John Fielding series, from about the same time (Blind Justice is first);
Robert Lee Hall's American Agent Series, featuring Benjamin Franklin, (Benjamin Franklin takes the Case is first).
Beter and better.......2005-12-11
The books in this series have gotten better and better. This latest is particularly fine. There is tremendous growth in the characters. I don't want to give anything away, but we learn signifcant facts about the flighty Marianne, and there's a development in her relationship with Grenville. Lacey resolves some of his feelings for Louisa, and starts valuing the friends we've seen him make in the previous books of the series. The plot is fine. I'm an avid reader, couple of hundred mysteries every year and if I don't see the perpetrator before the end, it's a winner.
I confess I was worried. Because so many things were resolved, it read like a "wind-up" and I was afraid there'd be no more Lacey mysteries. I was pleased to find in an internet search that another of these books in coming out in 2006. Yeah!
fabulous Captain Lacy Regency police procedural.......2005-12-07
In 1817, former military Sergeant turned Bow St. runner Milton Pomeroy shows Captain Gabriel Lacey the corpse of Henry Turner stabbed to death with the knife in his chest. Milton explains that the body was removed from the crime scene in order to not interfere with the crème de crème ball hosted by Lord Gillis. Upon seeing the murder weapon Lacey knows it belongs to Colonel Aloysius Brandon, who won it from him in a Peninsular card game.
Lacey detests his former friend and superior officer Brandon, who previously told Pomeroy he has no idea how his knife ended up in Turner's chest. The sleuth is tempted to let the Colonel take the fall as he knows he could make a case since Brandon had the opportunity and the means, and a motive shortly surfaces too. Will Lacey "settle" on Brandon, who everyone from the Earl hosting the ball to Pomeroy assumes committed the homicide? By doing so Lacey would avenge several affronts Brandon did to him or will he seek justice by continuing his investigations? His traitorous gut tells him the Colonel is being framed with too much easily available proof for someone as diabolical as Brandon has become.
The latest Captain Lacy Regency police procedural, A BODY IN BERKELEY SQUARE, is a fabulous who-done-it starring an ethical hero who faces a moral dilemma as he finally has the opportunity, the means and the motive to get away with vengeance. The who-done-it is so cleverly devised that crime scene investigators would cherish working such a case. However, the key to this strong entry in one of the best historical mystery series in recent years remains how hard Lacey is trying to uncover the identity of the killer.

With her previous novel The Death of the Necromancer, Wells established herself as a skilled fantasy world-builder with the ability to blend mystery and intrigue with plenty of buckle and swash. Here she departs from more familiar pseudohistorical European settings for the Celestial Empire, a land where life moves in eternal circles and the wishes of departed ancestors can have as much influence as the living on day-to-day life. Itinerant ex-priestess Maskelle was once the Voice of the Adversary, vessel to a spirit created by the Ancestors and given the task of punishing injustice and evil. When a false message from an interfering evil spirit led her to commit murder, Maskelle left the faith, only to return now, years later, answering the summons of the Celestial One. Someone--or something--has corrupted the great Wheel of the Infinite, distorting the sacred patterns which must be faithfully recreated at the end of each year to ensure the continual existence of the world. The only way to repair the pattern is to find the being responsible for disturbing it, and so the Adversary's Voice is needed once again, despite the past. Assisted by the swordsman Rian, a lordless bodyguard from distant Sitane, Maskelle uncovers an intricate plot whose roots were set into motion long ago--a plot responsible for the murder which forced her to leave the faith. Engaging characters and a convincing setting make this novel of ancient schemes and twisted magic an excellent and memorable read. --Charlene Brusso
Book Description
Every year, the Wheel of the Infinite must be painstakingly remade to ensure peace and harmony. And every hundred years, the Wheel and the world become one. But now a black storm ravages the beautiful mandala, and a woman with a shadowy past -- an exile, murderer, and traitor -- has been summoned back to put the world right. For if Maskelle and the swordsman Rian cannot stop the Wheel's accelerating disintegration -- then all that is what and will be...will end.

Another great Amrtha Wells book.......2007-08-25
Of all the books I've read so far this summer, this was the one I liked best. I haven't read everything Ms. Wells has written, but I've never been disappointed. The characters are interesting, the story flows well and is well structured, and she has created an interesting culture with memorable descriptions, and an interesting mystical magic system. Highly recommended!
Rebuilding the world........2004-03-24
Wells is one of the freshest and most talented fantasy writers working today, and I enjoyed _Wheel of the Infinite_ immensely. The City is loosely based on Angor Wat and the reader will catch whispers of Asian and Southeast Asian mythology throughout the book.
Maskelle is a refreshing character in the fantasy genre-- an assertive older woman who has come into power and knows her own mind. The other characters are equally well-fleshed out with many deft and light touches that keep the tone from getting too dark.
I was not completely willing to buy the ending-- a little bit too much Deus ex Machina, and that weakened the book for me. But still, it was a very good read and a commendable stand-alone fantasy novel.
Outstanding Effort.......2003-06-06
I've had Martha Wells tagged as an author to watch ever since I read "City of Bones". Her latest book, "Wheel of the Infinite", is a big, ambitious fantasy story; don't be fooled by its relatviely small page count. It includes a lot if imagination, excellent world-building, and better characters than her previous efforts. After this, I'm really hoping that Wells will get the recognition she deserves as one of the premier fantasy authors alive today.
The story focuses on Maskelle,a priestess who went to exile in disgrace after she misinterpreted a message from 'the Adversary', an ancient spirit that protects the world from evil, and on Rian, her bodyguard, who barely managed to escape a gruesome death in a foreign land. The society where the story takes place seems roughly based on ancient civilzations in Southeast Asia, a welcome break from the typical Mideivel Europe setting in much of modern fantasy. A rite known as 'the wheel of the Infinite' is performed every year, and Maskelle's knowledge is needed to combat an apparent attempt to destroy the wheel. The plot events is this book are densely crammed together, yet it has one of those brilliant "aha!" conclusions where everything comes together and makes sense in the end. I also liked the fact that many of the characters and concepts are highly imaginative. My personal favorite is Gisar, an evil puppet who is constantly attempting to escape from the band of traveling actors that owns him.
Oh, and before I forget to mention it, the final hundred pages or so of the book are outstanding. There aren't many fantasy authors who can write sequences that are genuinely frightening, but Wells pulls it off with grand style. It's interesting that fantasy genre is currently dominated by big, bulky series that are generally incoherent and filled with lousy writing. Many of the more talented authors, however, are sticking to relatively short solitary books. Martha Wells can create more engaging characters, build a better realized world, and spin a more exciting story in three-hundred fifty pages that Jordan, Goodkind, or Lackey can do in thousands.
One of my favorite fantasy novels!.......2003-04-26
I've read many fantasy novels and this one still sticks out in my mind. First because Martha Wells uses an exotic city for her setting that reminds me of Angkor Wat and other South-east Asian ruins. Secondly because the novel features a main character doesn't fit the average fantasy hero description. Maskelle is a strong middle-aged woman who has weaknesses but they don't stop her from taking care of business. The storyline has mystery and mysticism blended with continuous action that is well thought-out and engrossing. I was impressed enough to check out Wells' other books which are also good. But this novel for me was special in that it opened me to search out for books that feature really unique characters and creative settings.
Infinitely Intriguing.......2002-08-18
Martha Wells's "Wheel of the Infinite" just might be the most sensual medieval fantasy ever written. There's nothing cute about it. Nearly all the characters are adults (well, there's a strange cursed puppet and a girl in her early teens turns up at the end, and there are those strange flying things . . . ), and they act adult. Set in a tropical climate during the rainy season you'll start feeling as wet and as sleepless (the protagonists don't manage a full night of sleep during the tale, and you probably won't until you finish it) as do Ms. Wells's characters..
The exiled and cursed Maskelle, "Voice of the Adversary," returns to the civil and religious capital, Duvalpore, in time for the 100-year rite, in which the wheel of the book's title is renewed. On her homeward-bound journey she acquires a swordsman, Rian, and a troupe of actors. Upon their return they are soon caught up in the usual intrigue among the civil and religious authorities and there's a murder mystery to be solved. Something bad is happening to that wheel. But what? Who? Why? Has somebody created a knockoff wheel somewhere close by? And just when it looks as if Maskelle's figured it out, you realize you're just past the middle of the book. But that's when things really start to get interesting, as it becomes increasingly clear that this world is very different from our own. Things are resolved neatly at the end, no sequel seems required (although you'll probably hope for one), and indeed in a brief interview with the author at the back none is immediately planned.
Wells's smooth prose is as seductive as it is fluid (she's especially brilliant describing the landscape and architecture), and less is always more (in one scene you don't realize that teenaged girl has no clothes on until someone loans her a tunic) as the tale glides back and forth between Maskelle's and Rian's point of view. And unlike most medievaliana, the characters eschew the exaggerated forms of address and exaggerated figures of speech (Maskelle addresses her nominal superior, known as "The Celestial One" in vernacular terms) and there's plenty of bickering and wisecracking back and forth.
This one's for the grownups.

Undercover in the Mageworlds.......2003-01-18
Starpilot's Grave (1993) is the second novel written in the original Mageworlds trilogy. At this time, however, it is the fifth of the series in internal chronological sequence, following The Price of the Stars. In the previous book, Beka Rosselin-Metada had joined with the Professor, her brother Ari, Nyls Jessan, and Llannat Hyfid to capture Nivome the Rolny, the man who masterminded the assassination of her mother.
In this novel, Jos Metada realizes that there are others involved in the assassination plot and asks Beka to take the Warhammer into Mageworlds space to continue the investigation. Moreover, Jos gives Jessan permission to accompany her and he promotes and reassigns his aide, Jervas Gil, as Commodore of the fleet.
Beka and Nyls travel through the Net to Mage space looking for Ebenra D'Caer. On Raamet, they take on a passenger who later tries to kill them. Yet they extract enough information from his brain to divert to Ninglin to meet the assassin's contact.
Owen Rosselin-Metada manages to elude the Magelords on Pleyver and returns to Galcen with important information. Errec Ransome, his boss, then assigns him to watch the Mages on Nammerin. There he meets Klea Santreny and starts training her as an Adept.
When Ari and Llannat returns to Nammerin, Owen warns them that he is undercover and not to be noticed if seen. Ari is soon promoted and reassigned to the Fezrisond in the Infabe sector, but Llannat remains behind.
Jos and his new aide, Commander Quetaya, travel incognito to Infabe for an unannounced inspection. After they depart, however, security guards discovered a body stuffed in a trash container within RSF headquarters.
While this is the second volume in a trilogy, the plot does not let up on the suspense and action. The plot is much more complicated than the incidents related in this review. The final volume has a lot of story elements to tie together.
Recommended for Mageworlds fans and anyone who enjoys tales of covert action and special operations on an interstellar scale.

Mediocrity at its best.......2002-07-09
They came, they read a lot, they rehashed.
Beka, Ari and Owen ride again!.......1997-11-08
This way-more-than-adequate sequel to The Price of the Stars surpasses the first volume in its two great virtues: breathlessly fast action and fascinatingly developed characters. We get to see much more of the enigmatic and powerful Owen Rosselin-Metadi, and the relationship between his brother Ari and Adept Llannat, hinted at in the first novel, begins to strengthen, despite their being stuck in different sectors of the galaxy. Beka, their hellcat sister, just gets tougher and cooler and more heroic by the page. I profoundly admire the authors' ability to portray her as 100% woman and 100% strong. She is never more awe-inspiring than at the end of the novel, confronting and defying her ultimate fear.

Great Book.......2007-05-12
I bought this book because we buy Wild Alaskan Salmon online and needed some more recipes so that we wouldn't get bored. We try to stick with the Perricone Plan. The recipes sound exciting and even though we've only tried a few so far, we look forward to working our way through the entire book. I would recommend it to anyone who eats salmon on a regular basis and wants some variety. Some of the recipes could be use with other fish as well.
If you love Salmon, this is the book for you.......2006-09-14
As the wife of a fishing finatic living in Seattle, we have plenty of salmon in our freezer year round. I initially requested this book from our local library and was simply astounded by the quality of the recipes in this book. The Asian Salmon Burgers were unbelievable. I made extra of these burgers for my son at college and he called to say, "Make more, please." I have also tried the Blackening spice on fresh Silver Salmon and found it extremely tasty. I served it with a big salad. I am anxious to try more of the recipes and can't say enough good things about this book. Thank you, Diane Morgan, for this great book!
Salmon- Made so easy!.......2006-07-08
This book is a MUST have for anyone interested in or even afraid of cooking salmon!
I have always had a fear of cooking fish, but now, I feel like a pro! Diane Morgan explains why something is done in her books, and the recipes are always great! My family was not a big salmon family before I got this book, but now we will have it at least once a week, twice if I can get to the store, and I have even had it 3 times- using it in a salad!
Diane is fantastic and thorough in her salmon research!
The one to have in your library.......2005-08-17
This cookbook has a wide variety of recipes. Most could be used with other milder fish. I've tried several already and each one has been delicious. I liked the book so well that I bought 10 more to give as gifts.

Just made the Grilled Salmon Tacos with Chipotle Sauce and it was outstanding. I am buying Salmon, The Cookbook based on just that one recipe. If that's typical of the other recipes, I won't be disappointed

A real favorite.......2005-01-26
I've had this book since shortly after its release in 1987 - long before the low-carb craze, so having that particular recipe isn't something I'd expect. It's one of only a handful of cookbooks that have been in my library that long that I still use on a regular basis. The salmon mousse and sauteed salmon cakes are real favorites - great ways to use leftover salmon in ways that don't taste like "left-overs."
Great, but missing a great recipe.......2004-06-24
I'm on the Atkins diet, and I'd gotten this book in the hopes that it would contain a recipe for Lemon Basil Salmon. I'd been dying for dish this since I'd tasted it at Pizzeria Uno (I know -- you'd think it's just a pizza joint, but it's really got a lot of stuff). It's on their low-carb menu (7 net carbs!) and it's fantastic -- just grilled salmon with some lemon, basil and thyme served with broccoli and tasty low-carb smashed! Unfortunately, it was missing this recipe.
Don't get me wrong, Atkins folks -- there are plenty of fantastic and easy-to-make recipes here for healthy salmon dishes. But for the perfect Lemon Basil Salmon, looks like I'll have to head back to Pizzeria Uno.

Decisions, Decisions.......2005-08-14
I confess. I've always thought of Salmon as something you could only cook in one or two ways. This book came as a big surprise as it includes 120 or more recipies showing salmon being cooked in just about every imaginable fashion. Bill Jones is the editor of the book. An accomplished chef in his own right, trained in France and England he has since specialized in the regional foods of the North West.
In this book he has worked with many of the chef/authors who have published books with Whitecap publishers. They have each contributed salmon recipies from their own kitchens. The recipies are broken down by the course of the meal, as follows:
Marinades & Curing
Stocks, Soups & Chowders
Canapes & Snacks
Appetizers
Eggs & Pastry
Salads
Barbecue
Baked & Broiled
Poached & Steamed
Saute & Stirfry.
I can't think of any other part of a meal. The only problem I have with the book is that I'm having a dinner party tonight. I think Barbecued salmon might be a very good thing to have. But there are eight different barbecue recipies. Which one should I try first?
