Book Description

Thirtysomething Ophelia Jensen wants to live a quiet life as a small town librarian. She's created a comfortable existence with her kooky, colorful grandmother Abby, and if it were up to her, they could live out their days––along with Ophelia's dog Lady and cat Queenie––in peace and quiet. But, to Ophelia's dismay, she and Abby aren't a typical grandmother/granddaughter duo. She possesses psychic powers, and Abby is a kindly witch. And while Ophelia would do anything to dismiss her gift––harboring terrible guilt after her best friend was killed and she was unable to stop it––threatening events keep popping up, forcing her to tap into her powers of intuition. To make matters worse, a strange––yet devastatingly attractive––man is hanging around Ophelia's library, and no matter how many times she tells him she's sworn off men forever, he persists. Soon this handsome newcomer reveals he's following a lead on a local drug ring, and then a dead body shows up right in Abby's backyard. And much as Ophelia would like to put away her spells forever, she and Abby must use their special powers to keep themselves, and others, out of harm's way.

A cosy mystery. We meet Ophelia, our heroine with a history. She is a non-practising witch who is effectively hiding in her library. She is forced out when a new guy comes to town asking a lot of questions. A murder occurs and she is dragged into solving the murder with the help of some new friends. A little Jessica FLetcher but a good cosy mystery for a winter's night.

1 out of 5 stars Annoying beyond all measure!.......2007-07-16

I totally agreed with Fearlessreader and the assessment of the main male lead and I also agree, he was a stalker beyond measure and totally annoying, irritating and if it had been me, I would have decked him or called the police as well. I also agree, why even have a romantic lead in books, I feel that a strong female lead can do without having a male to cling to or get romantic with and still have a good story.

I did not like Ophelia at all. I realize she is PTSD but her incessant whining about her past, her stubborn inability to accept things and move on, her inability to even try to work out her problems or try magic to find out that life is good AND bad and deal with it, move on, let it go, stop obsessing, etc. left me frustrated beyond all measure. I was irritated beyond belief at the interplay between her and the lead male. If you can get past that and don't mind the whining, sniveling character of of Ophelia in this first book, the story line is good, when we get to it. Abby is great and very well rounded and adult; more of her and her wonderful personality and adult charm would be great! I was about to let this book be my last in the series but I had bought the second book as well. I thought I would give it one more chance and thankfully I did, because Ophelia comes out much better in the second book. Less stubborn, more pliable and able to get past herself and start to explore her heritage.

3 out of 5 stars Witch Genre Does This Book Belong In?.......2007-06-26

Abby and her granddaughter, Ophelia, are witches of the good variety. Ophelia is trying to deny her heritage because, four years ago, despite having a vision of her best friend's murder, she was not able to save him. Now living in the small town of Summerset, Ophelia is working as the town's librarian and trying to live a quiet life. No chance of that: theft and murder are about to descend on the town.

This is Shirley Damsgaard's first novel and also the first in a series of paranormal mysteries starring Abby and Ophelia. It's well enough written, but the opening chapters seem to be more reminiscent of a romantic novel than a mystery. Unfortunately, Ophelia's potential love interest comes across (perhaps deliberately?) more as a potential stalker. In terms of character, the developing friendship between assistant librarian, Darci, and Ophelia, has more impact as the gregarious Darci worms her way into Ophelia's insular life.

Ophelia's disinterest in her psychic and magick skills mean that the other-worldly aspects inherent in these types of story are not explored here to any great extent, but this is only the first novel in the series. On its own terms, as a `cozy' mystery, this is still a reasonably good read marred slightly by the overblown characterization of the leading male character.

There is enough here to suggest that this could become a very entertaining series, and the second instalment, `Charmed to Death', bears this out as it is an all-round better book.

5 out of 5 stars Book Witch is delightful!.......2007-05-14

Such good story lines. I do sometimes wish Ophelia wouldn't try so hard to fight her abilities but I'm hoping that will improve as the series progresses. Can't wait for the next one!

4 out of 5 stars 4 star debut.......2007-05-12

The intro to the series of the Ophelia and Abby Mysteries. Ophelia and Abby come from a long line of healers/psychics/white witches. Abby has imbraced her gift and wants to teach granddaughter Ophelia to do so as well. Ophelia instead shuns her gift, until danger lurks in the small town and threatens their safety. Rick the 'traveling chemical salesman' is too curious to be a real saleman, and his appearance in town is quite the coincidence with all the chemical fertilizers being stolen. Is he the person trying to harm Abby and Ophelia? Quirky side characters like 'ditzy' Darci add to the enjoyment of the book. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

      5 out of 5 stars Paxon's The Wind Crystal.......2000-05-22

The sixth book in the Westria Series, the Wind Crystal is another fine effort from Diana Paxson. Julian's battle continues, as he works to preserve the Kingdom from the destructive power of Caolin, the Blood Lord, and his minions. Searching for the Wind Crystal, he grows and changes to fit the needs of the Land.

The story line is strong, the background at once reminiscent of several different folklores and also original in its own right. There is strong emphasis on music and lyric, its power to heal or destroy, which was quite pleasing.

Overall, a very enjoyable book, I read this all in one sitting.

        From the back...
Old Hank Travis could see a lot of himself in Jeff Harris. The boy had oil in his blood and lived only for the next big strike. Hank would lay odds that nothing would keep Harris in Crystal Creek for long. Of course, if a certain marriage-minded Miss Beverly Townsend set her cap at him, all bets were off.

        My opinion...
Beverly has been mentioned in most of the previous books in this series. She has been portrayed as self-absorbed and using her beauty as a shield. Beverly was Miss Texas and almost Miss America. At first Jeff thinks that she is nothing but a pretty face, until he gets to know her and sees that she is a wonderful person with a big heart. However, Jeff has a tough time trying to convince her to have a relationship with an oil driller. I like Jeff and Beverly together. I hope that they are mentioned more in later books in the series. As usual in this series, characters from previous books make an appearance in this story. The next book (The Thunder Rolls) is about Ken Slattery, the foreman at the McKinney ranch, and Nora Jones from the Longhorn coffee shop.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A099133. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Building software systems from reusable software components has been a goal of software engineers for nearly three decades. Despite progress, the realization of this goal remains surprisingly elusive. Expensive hardware systems such as aircraft, communication networks, and factory assembly lines are designed so that various subsystems (both hardware and software) can be removed and replaced in order to change the performance and functionality of the overall system. In a similar manner, it should be possible to change the behavior of a component-based software system in useful and predictable ways by removing and replacing entire components. In order to perform component-level maintenance, an engineer must understand not only the structural relationships but also the behavioral relationships among the component to be replaced, the system, and the replacement component. These behavioral relationships need to be clearly documented and available to engineers developing and maintaining component-based systems. This dissertation presents a small set of precisely defined relationships that concisely express behavioral relationships between software components. These relationships may be used to provide implementers and maintainers with useful information about how components can and should be composed when integrated into component-based systems. Furthermore, these relationships encourage strict adherence to the well-established software engineering principles of modularity, information hiding, polymorphism, and extendibility.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A809604. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study investigates the feasibility of using a high resolution simple diagnostic model (WOCSS) initialized from a coarser grid full physics prognostic model (COAMPS) to obtain mesoscale winds. This approach using COAMPS 81, 27, and 9 km forecast model soundings to initialize WOCSS at 3 km is compared to COAMPS forecast at 3km horizontal resolution alone. Four case studies were collected during various weather regimes in Central California. Observations were collected from 5 different agencies and were used for verification of the models. The sensitivity of various WOCSS parameters were also explored. The results showed that overall the COAMPS(9km)/WOCSS approach provides winds as good as COAMPS at 3 km at a greatly reduced computation time. The COAMPS/WOCSS methodology performed particularly well during non-frontal situations where low-level inversions were present. Separation of the surface observation data by agency revealed large errors from data networks with low maintenance, monitoring and site specifications standards. The highest flow surface in WOCSS was the only parameter that displayed any significant sensitivity. Further work is needed to test the advantages of this sensitivity. COAMPS/WOCSS mesoscale forecast winds may prove to be very useful as input to emergency response applications such as dispersion and trajectory modeling.

This book captures the magic of the first two episodes. It is very unusual that a book and a TV series are almost identical. Little know facts that appeared on TV as a blur can be reviewed at length. Hats off to the author and let there be a Season six!

I can't recommend this book enough! It's just so well written. If I didn't know this novel was based on the tv series pilot script, I'd have thought that the show was based on this book! I love Sliders, it's my favorite show. I have yet to see the premiere episode, but this book surpassed all of my expectations and I look forward to seeing more Sliders novels from this author. It left me nostalgic for the first three seasons of the show (currently rerun on the sci-fi channel), especially now that the cast has suffered a major change/loss. Jerry O'Connell has left the show, and so has Charlie. Of the original ensemble, only Derricks (Rembrandt Brown) remains. Let's face it, they should have just ended the show and moved on to the big screen, like Star Trek. I wish good luck to the new cast members, but it's just not going to be the same show anymore, even with Maggie and Remmy's presence. I hope author Brad Linaweaver will write other excellent novels featuring the original cast. And just because Arturo died in one world, it doesn't mean he has to be dead in all worlds. Think about it. ;-)

3 out of 5 stars This was a GREAT book but............1998-06-16

This was a great book! It was filled with action and suspense. If I hadn't seen the Pilot episode I would have constantly been guessing what was gonna happen next. The only problem I found was that the author used the wrong character's name for stuff sometimes. That detracted from the book quality.

5 out of 5 stars The best Novel ever writen!!!!.......1998-06-10

I had only watched about five episodes of sliders before I read this . And let me tell you that this book has got it all. Book Description

Each summer, on the fields of glorious Cape Marlin, off the New England coast, the nation's best college players gather to play the most important baseball of their lives.

Jack Faber is a young hotshot pitcher with an unhittable slider and a rocket for a fastball. He plays for the fabled Seapuit Seawolves and dreams of making the Big Show. But a new coach, the scowling Bruno Riazzi, a former pro catcher, resents the kid's celebrity status and decides to knock him down a peg or two. And he stops at nothing to make it happen.

Humiliated, Jack loses his lifelong art, and with it his passion for the game, as well as, mysteriously, his ability to throw. A devastated Jack Faber is released from the St. Charles College roster. But the Seawolves coaches won't give up on him. They bring Jack back to Cape Marlin, determined to help him rediscover his lost talent. He finds himself again under the summer sun, coaches and old friends standing by him. But in the end it will be up to Jack.

Based on a true story, Slider celebrates the national pastime, a game that can break grown men's hearts -- as well as make them whole again.

It's difficult to believe anyone could write this badly. To fail to hold the reader's interest in a sports book, particuliarly a baseball book, is almost impossible. Sports have a built-in dramatic shape. Plus you are usually singing to the choir. Robinson, however, has through maudlin sentimentality, grandiose hyperpole and ponderous repetition, drained the life out of this story.
The descriptions of baseball's skills and techniques are so sadly inaccurate only someone who has has never thrown a ball or swung a bat could have written them.

i totally agree with jeff reardon when he says "this is the best book about baseball...ever!"

i have never read anything better than this book and i 100% reccommend it

                      3 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Story -- Flawed but Fun.......2003-03-27

I'm somewhat taken aback by the negativity of some of the reviews that other readers have posted regarding this book. Yes, there are inconsistencies but this isn't Bill James and the Baseball Abstract. At its heart it's kind of a romantic novel that uses baseball as its backdrop in writing about setting goals and reaching them.

Focusing on the baseball content of this book and then criticizing it for it's lack of accuracy, would be about as stupid as watching Get Smart to do research on the CIA.

Instead, I would suggest that readers focus on some of the relationships between the characters in this book. The interplay between star pitcher Jack Farber with his father and catcher make for great reading. The same is true for the descriptions of the Northeast and some of the some small cities the Cape League plays their games.

Where the book does tend to fall apart is at the end. The writer attempts to make a negative statement about the attitudes of professional athletes by concocting an unrealistic ending that is far too predictable.

Still, I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it to most people. In fact, I would even it recommend it to most baseball fans with the exception of those geeks that spend way too much time with box scores rather than with real life.

Finally, another recommendation for a fun baseball book would be Summerland by Michael Chabon.

1 out of 5 stars Low and Outside.......2003-01-16

My "bad book" antennae were alerted on page 1 of this tome when I noticed a rather pathetic typo (Mississippi is misspelled), and nothing on the succeeding 400 pages allowed them to relax, even though I went into "skim for big events" mode about halfway in.

This is a bad novel, with all the authenticity of hair in a can, and as flat as the troublesome slider thrown by the nominal hero of the story. The baseball action is described in aimless, excessive, and error-prone detail, almost every plot line is preposterous and full of holes, and the dialogue reads like something out of a Chip Hilton story. Examples beyond what has been offered in other reviews:

                      - Hard luck mother of catcher despairs of his ever getting started with a law career if he wastes a couple of precious years trying to play baseball. Yep, those law firms hate to hire former athletes...

                      - A pitcher from a college baseball powerhouse goes from summer league MVP to being essentially cut from his team, AND NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT IT. Did Einstein predict the presence of media black holes, too?

                      - A pitcher (from Stanford, no less) continues to pitch through pain; apparently the lure of the Ted Kennedy Trophy (I'm not making this up) is far greater than the $2 MM+ signing bonus he'll get for being a first round draft pick.

Ugh. Even the "local color" of the summer league scene, which was the reason I picked up the book in the first place, is trotted out with a sort of Truman Show kind of gloss, and goes nowhere. No runs, no hits, and too many errors.

2 out of 5 stars Weak storyline but plenty of suspense.......2002-12-19

When I read the author bio, I asked myself what a submarine expert would be doing writing a baseball novel. The Seawolves were obviously a fanatsy. In just about every game they one in the ninth inning and came back from a ten-run deficit. The language also detracted from the book and make you feel like these people were being paid to swear at each other. The author obviously knew nothing about baseball and made everyone in the story magically rich to solve all the problems. It was rather condusing considering they covered two season's worth of rosters plus many additional players on other teams. I had to backtrack so I would know who everyone was. Otherwise, if you want to read a baseball book and have nothing else to read, this book is perfect for you.

Provides some good information but it's too small to cover anything well. I'd put the money towards a better book.
