It is hard to imagine a more intricate fictional look at interracial love than Kate Manning's well-written debut. Whitegirl is the story of Charlotte, a California girl almost stunted by her blond good looks, and Milo, an African American ski champion who has gone far professionally by never examining his deeper feelings. When she first encounters Milo at a small Vermont college, Charlotte ignores her attraction to him because of how self-conscious the racial difference makes her feel. Five years later, when they meet again and fall in love, they both have to learn how (and whether) to shut out the disapproving voices. "It was exhausting," recalls Charlotte, "being a human public service announcement" about interracial love. Milo must also face his guilt at not being with a black woman and his fear that he's just an Oreo (black on the outside, white on the inside). Although Whitegirl is smart and consistently engaging, there is a gap between the observant tone of its narrator, Charlotte, and the actual characterization of her as a good-time girl and something of a bubblehead. Milo, while flawed, is exceptionally well-drawn by Manning, and readers will be rooting for him by the end of the book. --Regina Marler

Book Description

I was not always a white girl. I used to be just Charlotte. A person named Charlotte Halsey. But when I met Milo, when I fell in love with him, I became White, like a lit light bulb is white. In the mirror there is my skin the color of sand, hair the color of butter, eyes blue as seawater. Just so bleachy white I am practically clear.

Milo is black, what they call “Black,” only not to me. To me he has mostly been just Milo. They say lovers can find each other just by using the sense of smell; that we are all really animals in that way, no different from dogs or deer. I know it’s true. I could find Milo blind in a room of men, the smell of him like pine trees in a snowy wind. I could pick him out just by the slow rising of his breath while he slept. So no, until this happened, up to the time of the assault, he was not black, not to me. He was Milo. He was my husband.
– from Whitegirl

As Kate Manning’s riveting debut novel begins, a thirty-five-year-old white woman lies secluded in her home overlooking the Pacific, unable to speak, recovering from a violent assault that has nearly taken her life. Her husband, a famous black actor, is in jail for the crime.

Is he guilty? She’s not sure. She remembers nothing of the assault. Longing for answers, she sifts through the history of their life together, trying to determine how two people once so in love might find themselves so ruined.

Charlotte Halsey and Milo Robicheaux met briefly in college in the 1970s, where she was a beautiful, troubled girl hungry for freedom, and he was the star athlete with Olympic dreams. Years later, when she is a successful model and he a famous sports hero turned actor, their paths cross again in New York City and they fall in love.

But their marriage is soon fraught with tension. As Milo’s celebrity skyrockets, motherhood ends Charlotte’s career, leaving her increasingly alienated from the man she believed she knew so well. Jealousy and mistrust grow between them even as they strive to build a life together against increasing odds.

A poignant anatomy of a marriage undone by the pressure of fame and the struggle for identity, Whitegirl is the arresting debut of a significant new voice in contemporary fiction.

3 out of 5 stars good character development, short on plot.......2006-05-15

This was a fascinating study. As a black woman who has been involved with interracial relationships since the 80s, I can really relate to some of the issues with Charlotte's family AND Milo's family. (and don't let anyone tell you different, black people can be super racist too).

What disappoints me about this book is while we get a great view of who these people are, no one ever really seems to grow or learn and the ending is VERY disappointing. I won't spoil the book -- however let me just say you'll get to the end and be like "what, that's it?" I mean I know the world doesn't have endings and life goes on, but a book has a finite number of pages and her ability to paint a picture was established well... just that it's like watching Jaws right up until when Dreyfus is about to be killed and having Spielberg scroll on the screen "And maybe they lived --- the end"

Very disappointing, Kate.

Good read if you want to see a perspective on IR relationships though... however the time frame seems a bit inadequate to me (ends in the 90s or so I believe). The racial conflicts she speaks of in the areas of the country she speaks of are a bit calmer than that (I know, I've lived there). And I disagree with another reviewer who said did they get married because of wanting to stand up to folks or because of some "jungle fever" type motivations. That was very insulting and really misses the point of the book... that black people and white people can and do get married for reasons of love, outside society at times can't understand that, but it doesn't mean it's not true.

Hard to put down til you get to the ending :)

5 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this book.......2006-02-23

I really enjoyed this book. It was thought-provoking and interesting. I've bought it as gifts for a few of my friends and look forward to reading it again.

4 out of 5 stars Old Story, New Perspective.......2004-07-10

Kate Manning's "White Girl" presents an age-old phenomenon from a new perspective. Black writers have long tackled the issue of interracial dating from either their personal experiences or those of people they know, but very few white writers have done the same. Manning's willingness to be one of the few is commendable. There are villains on both sides of the color spectrum and neither side is given much slack. Not being an African American man herself, she captures Milo's (the black male lead) inner-turmoil perfectly. This is a very fascinating read!

4 out of 5 stars What if the world were truly color-blind?.......2004-03-05

White Girl tells the story of Charlotte and Milo: their romance, love and downfall. Charlotte and Milo meet up initially at a college on the East Coast. What is special about Charlotte and Milo, depending on how one looks at it, is that Charlotte is a "white girl" and Milo is an African-American male.

Milo has grown up in a "white world". He grows up in New Hampshire to parents that are highly educated and "refined" in every sense of the word. Milo is a ski buff and goes on to win gold medals at two Olympics in skiing. Milo has always been around predominately
whites and was once told by an African-American woman that he wasn't "black" enough.

Charlotte is the antithesis to Milo. She grew up in a family that was dysfunctional in every sense of the word. While Milo has lived a charmed life, Charlotte has always struggled with having goals and being accepted. Charlotte is a "raving" beauty that eventually finds her calling in modeling.

Eventually Charlotte and Milo meet up after college and fall in love. They marry and have a daughter and appear to live a "perfect" life. However, on top of the usual struggles inherent in any relationship, Charlotte and Milo have to deal with prejudices and paradigms that American society has created for not only African-Americans, but for beautiful, white blonds as well.

I found this book interesting. My immediate question was about the ethnicity of the author. Was she writing from personal experience as a Black woman or white? Ms. Manning wrote from Charlotte's point of view a lot and didn't allow the reader to "see" a lot of Milo's thoughts and give him an opportunity to explain his actions. The ending leaves the reader wondering how it all ends. But still, the book did bring to surface a lot of issues that should be addressed in our society.

5 out of 5 stars A book to ponder.......2003-09-27

Kate Manning tells the mesmerizing love story of Charlotte, a stunningly beautiful white woman from California, and Milo, a stunningly handsome black man from New Hampshire. They meet briefly in college and then years later in New York where she has become a famous model and he has become an internationally celebrated skier.

The author stays out of the way of Charlotte, the narrator, as the story unfolds. In the process we observe two rather shallow people who have relied on their beauty and successes to get through a day. When they marry, however, they each have to confront issues of race and identity and vanities and the power of wealth. We twist and turn with them to a most unexpected and absolutely brilliant ending.

It is a book that wants to (needs to) be reread, thought about, paid attention to. Thank you Kate Manning.

5 out of 5 stars Chis Anne Wolfe.......2007-01-06

It may be just me but I love her works, and there are many days I wish she could have written more for us readers. The Aggar series is great and how I first became aware of her, but she speaks to the romantic in me in both Bitter Thorns and Annabelle and I. If you liked her writing style in this series, I strongly suggest you check out her other 2 books that were published as well.

5 out of 5 stars Intriquing well-developed sci-fi adventure.......2004-03-08

Many of us have found this dense book daunting, printed in tiny type with almost no white space for relief. However, for those who pick up the book after first laying it down in disbelief at the number of words, there awaits a well crafted world of Amazons, psychics and bad guys. Wolf has created a very believable world that mimics what most of us know about the medieval ages. Her imagination is rich and detailed. You will believe in Aggar before the end of the book.

I was annoyed by Di'nay's ability to be obtuse about her lovely "shadow" bonded to her in their attempt to rescue a downed Terran pilot. The world of Maltar was satisfyingly ominous and the Maltar was sufficiently evil. Once you get past Wolfe's inability to write straight forward dialog, you will enjoy the page turning excitement of the adventure. You will also enjoy the romance. Wolfe writes loving romance which hints joyously at what transpires between the two "shadow mates."

I could only find the most recent edition of this book. The cover should be punished as a crime against the author and the type setting is very bad. One wonders if anyone read the galleys.

5 out of 5 stars Don't judge the book by its cover.......2002-02-27

Diana n'Athena is ready to go home. An "Amazon" from the all female planet of "dey Sorormin" (which Wolfe translates as the Sisterhood), Diana is a sociologist employed by the Terran Intergalactic Empire for the last 20 years as a Cultural Liaison and Feild Operative. Approaching forty, Diana has served the last five years on Aggar, a patriarchal, pre-industrial, semi-feudal planet located on the Empire's border. Over six foot tall, lean, strong and brown-eyed, Diana must pass as male to work effective on Aggar. Such a charade is not uncommon for Amazons serving on "primitive" planets, but it does wear on their spirits. Facing her last mission before she can return to her home world, Diana must locate and rescue a Terran pilot. He carries information that may mean the salvation of the Empire which is on the brink of war.

After years of working alone, Diana is not pleased when Aggar's ruling Council of Ten assigns her a native "Shadowmate." Shadows are individuals trained for years to act as guides, protectors, linguists, trackers, companions and whatever else is needed to aide the individual whom the Council has determined is important to the future of Aggar. Such assignments are one of the ways the Council "tips the balance" of fate for pivotal individuals and gently guides the planet's future.

Diana's Shadow, Elana is particularly special. In addition to her training and expertise, she bears the rare "Blue Sight." This extrasensory gift (genetically linked with blue eyes)allows her to read people's intent via their aura and create illusions. For years Elana has been training to become a Shadow. For the last five years she's been experiencing dreamlike visions of the Amazon that she is to Shadow.

"Shadows of Aggar" is a classic heroic quest. As such, the journey itself, what happens to both women during the trek and what they learn from the various encounters, is as important as the result of the quest. -- Although having the end of the empire as it is known hang in the balance does build the suspense! -- There are some similarities between Aggar and some other fantasy realms. Yet these parallels reflect cultural archetypes and Wolfe, who died in 1997, created some interesting, unique details and characteristics for three cultures: Aggar, Amazon and Terran. For example, imagine a race of humans whose skin color changes with excitement or exertion, thus making the racial differences we know, moot. Furthermore, Wolfe created the basics of a language for the "dey Sorormin" and provided a glossary of words from Aggar and the Sisterhood in the back for reference.

"Shadows" was originally released in 1991, and this reader has returned to it at least twice in the last decade. The story and characters hold up to re-reading. The same is true of Wolfe's second Aggar novel, "Fires of Aggar." Happily, the publisher has made a commitment to keep Wolfe's titles in print. The new covers of both titles are disappointing and distracting. Yet, to coin a phrase, don't judge the book by it's current cover. If you like fantasy stories with strong female leads that explore complex issues of gender roles, societal pressures to conform and their impacts on the individual -- not to mention a good old fashioned adventure with a touch of lavender romance -- you'll enjoy "Shadows of Aggar." Pick up a copy of it and its companion book, "Fires of Aggar."

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Gem.......2002-01-18

I read any science fiction and fantasy novels that have lesbian characters that I hear of or stumble across. Most of what is out there is written for mainstream audiences and often by straight authors. There's nothing wrong with that, one of the attractions of the SF and Fantasy genres is that authors explore a vast array of character types and cultures. But there is a definite lack of fantasy novels written by lesbians for lesbian audiences. What's worse is, most of what is in print is mediocre at best and not worth the space on the bookshelf at worst. In desperation, lesbian fantasy fans end up buying and reading the dreck anyway.

Shadows of Aggar is a rare exception. To say that it's the best lesbian fantasy novel I've run across is true, but defining it that way is a disservice to the book, since that isn't really saying much. It holds up on its own merits within the fantasy genre as a whole, not just within the sparse lesbian fantasy subset. Shadows of Aggar contains most of the elements that make fantasy what it is; a unique world and culture, swords and magic, and imperfect characters on a heroic quest. The icing on the cake is that the lesbian romance is good too.

I do have to say here, I have NO idea what in heck the current publishers were thinking with the new book covers. I don't get this trend of putting photographs of real people on fiction. Part of the allure of written fiction is that our minds supply the images. To be blunt, the new covers are tacky and ugly. (I also note the editor's review said something about a trilogy, but there are only two books with those characters.)

One final note, as I noticed a previous reviewer mentioned hoping for more from Chris Anne Wolfe. Unfortunately for us, she lost her battle with cancer. So I highly recommend collecting all of her works currently in print if you enjoy her writing, as there won't be any more. Shadows of Aggar is by far her best, but the others are all worth a read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent lesbian scifi!.......2001-07-27

This is definitely one of those books that will keep you up until the wee hours of the morning - you just can't put it down! This so reminded me of the Darkover series by Marion Zimmer Bradley (which I LOVED). Like MZB, Wolfe has created an exciting and interesting new world in which two technologically separate cultures meet...with one big plus. The relationship between the two women is protrayed in a more intimate and central way here than in MZB's books. This well written book was a throughly enjoyable read - do yourself a favor and buy it! :)

Book Description

Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the Empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And of course the pirates want her dead, too. But Alicia DeVries has two allies nobody knows about, allies as implacable as she is: a self-aware computer, and a creature from the mists of Old Earth's most ancient legends. And this trio of furies won't rest until vengeance is served.

In Fury Born is a greatly expanded new version of David Weber's popular novel Path of the Fury, which has gone through six large printings in its original mass market edition. David Weber has added considerable new material, revealing the earlier life of Alicia DeVries before she embarked on her mission of vengeance, and illuminating the universe of the original story. The result is a novel with almost twice the wordage of the original, and a must-buy for all David Weber fans.

5 out of 5 stars Another great heroine from David Weber.......2007-09-12

I admit I am an Honorverse junkie. This new psycho-b-ch from hell is really fun too. Although it takes half the book to set up the real action, I did find it quite the page turner.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed - still a solid read.......2007-09-01

"Path of the Fury" was the first book I ever read from David Weber and introduced me to him. I would said POTF and the first Honor Harrington book suffered from a pulp fantasy description on the back, but a A+ read between the covers.

In Fury Born, an expanded version of POTF, takes a tight, focused story and instead of filling in the blanks as you go (leaving a lot to your imagination) it steps you through the whole thing, spelling everything out for you.

There is also a clear difference in the style of the writing from David Weber of now (sections 1 and 2) and the David Weber of then (Section 3). Not all of the tech seemed to completely match up, either.

Overall I liked the book and I don't recommend you NOT read it. But the original Path of the Fury was better edited, focused and enjoyable. In Fury Born is more of a plodding, deliberate read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Simply Excellent.......2007-08-27

I'll keep this short and simple.

Characters that are well written. Plot lines that make sense. Action, adventure, real people in a future easy to imagine.

This book is well worth your time. Go ahead, buy it. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Furiously Good!.......2007-08-23

Pretty typical Weber product. Well worth the money for a good read and a good time! Self-contained - no need for sequels to keep you buying, although the end is set up for new stories!

4 out of 5 stars If you like Weber, you'll like this one!.......2007-08-17

A great book by one of my favorite authors. I enjoyed the previous version (Path of the Fury) when it was published. This version adds significant backstory and expands on the themes. Path of the Fury

Maybe it is because I have read and enjoyed the original, but the "seams" where the new material joined up with the older material were especially clear to me. I almost wish he had written it as a standalone prequel rather than what amounts to an extended novella at the beginning -- or better yet, continued the story from the end into new adventures for the characters.

What is so lovely is that the book moves you to write. It helps you find the comfort to be bold and write your thoughts.

Lovely book - I'd buy it used and enjoy it if you love to write.

    4 out of 5 stars A sci-fi classic that hasn't aged a bit.......2007-09-22

What would happen if space explorers stumble upon a lost colony of humans on a distant planet? Are they still human, or has the separation of time and space made them something else? Andre Norton uses this backdrop to examine questions of who is human, what advanced civilization means, and what is or isn't alien, all wrapped in a a non-stop action adventure. The sequel to The Stars Are Ours, Norton again gives us two seemingly insignificant people - space pilot Raf Kurbi and colony scout Dalgard Nordis - who manage to change the future of an entire planet. And if the ending doesn't choke you up, maybe you're not human either.

5 out of 5 stars The Federation of Free Men.......2004-06-30

When the oppressive global dictatorship of Pax took over the Earth they put a stop to space exploration. Still, a few rebels escaped in the sleeper ships to found free new colonies- or perish in the attempt. Those few colonies that reached inhabitable worlds and survived were cut off for centuries. It was during these centuries of isolation and freedom that they were able to develop the mysterious mental powers that "civilization" had all but destroyed.

Finally, when Pax had been eradicated from Earth by the Federation of Free Men, the rockets began to rise once more. This time they they possessed the faster than light drives that would enable them to make up for lost time. One such ship was the RS-10. This ship and its crew stumbled upon the world of Astra and it's strange, ruthless, degenerate, inhuman inhabitants. The Terrans did not trust these creatures but there was much that they could learn from them. Making a temporary alliance the expedition accompanied the aliens to a strange treasure city to help exploit its wonders. It was there that they discovered that the aliens had good reason to fear going to the treasure city alone. It was protected by Free Men who had arrived centuries before....

The classic Ace edition of this sci-fi classic has probably the best painted cover of a conventional space ship that I've ever seen.

If there had been no other creator of science fiction and fantasy in the second half of the twentieth century, Andre Norton would have been enough.

5 out of 5 stars Read it in sequence or alone.......2004-05-14

When I read this book during the mid-1950s I was lucky enough to be forced to read it as a sequel. The book hadn't been released when I read The Stars are Ours. There weren't many SF books on the library shelves in those days, so I returned to recheck the first one and discovered Star Born. Felt I'd died and went to heaven.

I reread both a number of times through the years, always hoping Norton would add a few more sequels, assuming it was an obvious target for a series. It never happened.

So, you're stuck with these two, which will probably cause you to join me in my wish Norton had written more.

    4 out of 5 stars Star Born.......2000-01-18

Story a sequel to (The Stars Are Ours) 3 to 4 generations in the future. After discovering the old ones looting the city for lost technology Dalgard finds the people from the star ship to be of his race. Good sequel, Classic Andre Norton

              Book Description

There has been much new research bearing on star formation in the last decade, yet up till now, none of this has filtered down to a popular level. In Darkness Born brings together this diverse work from many different branches of astronomy and shows clearly the synthesis of ideas that has resulted. The book presents the basic physical and astronomical ideas that are adequate for the lay reader to grasp the nature of our galaxy and to understand the way in which it formed. These basic concepts are used to develop a theoretical picture of how stars are born from giant clouds of gas and dust, and to understand the evidence from optical, radio, X-ray, ultraviolet and infrared observation. Martin Cohen is a recognised authority in this field. His knowledge and lucid style have resulted in a book which provides a stimulating introduction to most of the major concepts of astronomy. Any reader who prefers to grasp these concepts and ideas without tangling with theory and equations will find this a fascinating and illuminating book.

                5 out of 5 stars New England's Best.......2007-07-15

I had liked Linda as an author but this is an outstanding cookbook. It
has lots of favorites in it and also lots of new ones to try. She and her mother did a great job in their collaboration. Great cookbook for new cooks as well as us older ones! If you like seafood, you should enjoy this one.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook!.......2006-06-21

I've got to say, this is one of my favorite cookbooks. Linda Greenlaw and her Mother are very down to earth, and have a knack for coming up with great recipes. The stories they share with the reader are very enjoyable as well. I'd love for them to collaborate on another cookbook! The only cookbook I own that I enjoy as much as this one is The New England Clamshack Cookbook. You won't be dissappointed if you buy this!

5 out of 5 stars It made me visit the island.......2005-12-06

I've enjoyed all of Linda's books, but this one made me visit the island to see for myself. My wife and I have tried and enjoyed some of the recipes, but the tales are the beauty of the book. I wanted to meet Linda or her mother on the island, but only accidentally; alas, we didn't run into either one. I heartily recommend all of Linda's books.

4 out of 5 stars recipes from a very small island.......2005-10-09

A wonderful, rustic setting, the related stories about the given recipes were interesting as to local color, anecdotes, and life. This was a gift from thoughtful friend, and I bought her one in return. I collect cook books and this was a good one. Les Kinkade
