Book Description

He was her guardian, the duke of darkness-and desire.

She tried to drive him away from Arden Hall.  Instead, Isabelle Montgomery was charmed by the rakehell John Saint Germain, the handsomest--and most dangerous--man she'd ever met.  He said she was his ward, and he'd come to sweep her off to London and a proper debut.  Isabelle's guardian angel had promised a dark prince would be sent by destiny to save her.  But Saint Germain's scorching appraisal suggested she'd need protection from him.

No woman could refuse the dashing John Saint Germain, Duke of Avon, arrogant and dark as sin.  Saint Germain had known betrayal and vowed no woman would claim his heart again.  But he hadn't reckoned on the innocent beauty who slammed the door in his face.  Much against his will, he'd agreed to become her guardian, to prepare her for London's marriage market.  But now he was determined to claim her as his own, oblivious of the enemies he'd earned pursuing the woman who had become his heart, his soul, his destiny....

5 out of 5 stars Great Job!.......2002-05-01

I didn't read this book but I think it's good.

4 out of 5 stars Funny, enjoyable and totally unbelievable.......2002-03-13

This is a Cinderella story set in Regency England, complete with the wicked stepmother and the fairy Godmother. You will still enjoy the humor and the funny, funny, dialogue in the novel despite the magic and the guardian godmother parts.

The handsome, arrogant Duke of Avon is Isabelle's prince, revealed to her by her guardian angel years ago. She hates him.. and at the same time, she's inexplicably drawn to him! He thinks she talks to herself.. that she is mad.. especially with all this talk of guardian angels.. but she is so very sweet.. so irresistible and he can't help his growing attraction to her.

The rakish Duke and the eccentric Isabelle make an odd couple indeed.. Grasso has a wonderful sense of humor and a love of the ridiculous that will appeal to almost all readers. this is a lovely book and definitely worth the few mistakes and historical inconsistencies.

5 out of 5 stars A hilarious book!.......2001-09-27

Cinderella's tale couldn't be better than this one! I couldn't stop laughing until I finished the book, and when I was done with it, it was five o'clock in the morning. I really enjoyed this story, I think I've read it more than hundred times. There's lots of nonsenses but they made the story funny and delightful, I hope you enjoy this book like I did!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Romance Novel To Read.......1999-03-13

Though the book contained a lot of nonsense, I really liked it. I especially liked the part where the Granny and her sister takes out their guns and threatens John's x-mistress; it was hilarious!

3 out of 5 stars Novice Reading.......1999-03-07

My first Patricia Grasso novel. I was disappointed in many historical and language mistakes. And the fairy godmother speaking and being seen by others was a bit much to swallow. But then I believe that Ms. Grasso enjoys the magical and unbelievable. Obviously her favorite fairy tale was and still remains to be Cinderalla. But the novel had comical situations and the characters were enjoyable! I truly wish I could learn more about the Dowager and her absolutely 'nutty' sister. But the novel is an enjoyable novel for novice romance readers; no explicit sexual encounters, little if any violence, and of course, an unloved child finally finding love. It is a 'feel good' novel and yes, I did enjoy the novel and would read other Patricia Grasso novels.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book!!.......2005-06-28

My daughter loves to read this book. She was just a year old when I bought it for her & she wasn't too interested in it then but now she's 19 months old & we HAVE to read it every night before we go to bed; she actually picks it out. She loves to point to the snowmen on the pages & point to the snowflake at the end of the book. This book is great for kids older than one year.

2 out of 5 stars Four-pointed flakes??.......2005-01-10

This is a book ABOUT snow and ice, and everywhere the snowflake illustrations have four- and eight-pointed flakes. (Snowflake crystals are always 6-pointed, or based on a 6-point structure - never 4 or 8.) Maybe kids don't care, but it shouldn't have taken too much to get that right! Colorful illustrations, and the kids like it, but I'm not impressed.

3 out of 5 stars Not for babies who like to chew on their books.......2003-04-02

Nicely illustrated book as all Baby Einstein books.
The book is recommended for babies 6 months and up. I can however not recommend the book for small babies who like to explore their books with their mouthes. The book started to dissolve within five minutes after I gave it to my daughter. It did not just dissolve, but small shiny particles of paint came off. That can't be healthy when swallowed! I guess I hide that book for another year. I have other cardboard books that stand up much better to my baby's oral explorations.

5 out of 5 stars Tears of understanding.......2000-10-31

I work with hopeful adoptive couples, so I ordered this book for them. Unbeknown to many of them,I am also a birth grandmother. The book was a delightful read that brought tears of joy, and sorrow, to my eyes. I want to send a special copy to my daughter (the birth mother), the adoptive parents of her child, as well as to my mother, because I think it's a book we can all relate to as a way of understanding what we've gone through these past 7 months. We have an "open adoption" so can see/write/talk to each other whenever we want. It's amazing to even imagine what it would have been like 20 or 30 years ago; we have much to be thankful for. But that doesn't take away from the losses that everyone brings to the adoptive table. Everything about the book was enjoyable--even the cover of the book, a soft pastel/water color print of violets, was pleasing to look at. And I loved all the quotes from those great songs of the 60's and 70's (with a few earlier ones thrown in)!

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring, beautifully written true life story........1999-04-30

This true life story about a young woman who faced a life-giving decision (all alone) has made a great impact upon many readers. I know, because I have given several copies of "Violets" to friends. Beautifully written, Jacqueline Ramthun allows the reader into her very soul. Her recall of simple, yet difficult memories are woven throughout her story. Readers will share along with the author, the feelings this young woman felt along her decision-making path. I would describe this book as inspirational and hope giving for a world filled with so much tradegy and despair. The author's choice at a time so filled with remorse and sorrow is rewarded with love and new lives, she could not imagine. I highly recommend this book for both young men and women, parents and grandparents. It will leave you feeling better about the gift of life.

I really enjoyed this book, and was delighted to find it at amazon.com since it wasn't in any of the bookstores I've ever visited. I especially enjoyed the elaborate descriptions of the marketplaces and caravanserais as Tamai traveled along the Silk Road to the Forbidden Empire. Still, I wish I had read the prequel, Flameweaver, first (although the plot is easy enough to follow with or without having read the original book).

4 out of 5 stars Ahead Of Its Time.......2005-10-14

"A Mirror for Observers" by Edgar Pangborn was first published in 1954, and won the International Fantasy Award in 1955. In this story, Mars was dying 30,000 years ago, and the Martians moved to Earth. Remaining hidden, they observed the advances of Man and they wait for a time when they can be accepted by humanity. Some of the Martians, Abdicators, have grown dissatisfied with the idea of waiting and want to take the Earth for themselves. One young Earth boy, Angelo, becomes the center of attention for one of the Abdicators, Namir, as well as one of the Observers, Elmis.

In the first part of the book, Namir attempts to use Angelo, age 12 at this point, for his own purposes. He tries to make him hate humanity, but Elmis consistently thwarts his attempts with the help of Sharon, a young girl who likes Angelo. Namir does manage to force Angelo to run away, and thus separate him from Elmis.

In the second section of the book, time has moved forward 9 years, and we see the end of Elmis' search for Angelo, who now goes by the name Abraham Brown. Once again Namir is attempting to use Angelo, and once again Elmis works to stop him. Namir does manage to release a disease which threatens to depopulate the Earth.

This is a solid book, and the potential use of biological weapons to depopulate the planet, is certainly one of the concerns in today's environment of terrorism. While "Davy" is probably Pangborn's best known work, "A Mirror for Observers" is certainly a worthy runner-up

4 out of 5 stars God, Satan and Job.......2004-11-24

Edgar Pangborn didn't write much, but what he wrote was of uniformly high quality. Here, he retells the story of God, Satan and Job, using two Martians and an Earth boy. The not-so-good Martian wants to wipe the human race out, leaving the planet for Martians. The good one actually likes humans. In-between them is a 12-year-old boy who could go either way--to good or evil. Unfortunately, Pangborn's style didn't appeal to me this time, as it usually does. Still, it's an excellent book, considered one of the top 100 SF novels.

3 out of 5 stars Potentially a great book. However...........2004-10-18

I've wanted to read this book ever since I first read about it in David Pringle's "100 Best SF Novels"(1988). Well, I finally finished reading it last week. Mirror was originally published in 1954, and it's the 2nd novel by Edgar Pangborn, who's best remembered today for his 1960s novel, "Davy".

The story is set in the 1960s-70s (the "future" back in 1954!); it's a morality tale focused on a young man, named Angelo who has the potential for greatness, if he doesn't turn to the "dark side" first:) Angelo is mentored by a kindly, avuncular man ("Elmis"), who's really a Martian in human disguise. He's also being influenced by another Martian ("Namir"), who's out to destroy humanity. Eventually Angelo runs away from home, and the book concerns Elmis' long quest to find him, and bring him back to the fold.

The premise and plot of Observers is compelling; however, the writing and characterization are very flawed, so I have to take two stars off: The book's writing is rather quaint and "precious" at times, and the dialogue is just plain awful at points. The characterization of the Martian narrator is just unbelieveable- he's stricken with an intense "love for humanity" and his various digressions on culture and music, etc are annoying. He's obviously just a stand-in for Pangborn himself. (The book would have worked better as a fantasy- if Elmis and Namir were an angel and demon instead of being aliens.) Also bad is the characterization of Angelo's love interest, Sharon, who Pangborn puts on a very high pedestal...

Pangborn was born in 1909, so he was old enough to remember the 1918 Influenza pandemic in which 20-50 million people died worldwide. Perhaps that explains why the plot includes another devastating pandemic as it's climax.

          5 out of 5 stars A Mirror of Perception.......2002-09-30

One of the major findings of modern physics is that the observer always affects the item being observed, and vice versa. This book is this axiom brought to life in a way that will break your heart.

The Martians came to Earth 30,000 years ago, exiles from their dying planet. Seeing that human society of that time was not ready for contact with another race, they built their new homes underground and undersea, to wait for that time when humanity will grow up. They send out Observers to monitor what is happening, and occasionally help direct humans towards a more civilized, ethical society. But eventually some of them grow tired of waiting for humanity (and perhaps because one of their undersea cities was located at Bikini island), and decide to try another plan: wipe humanity out so they can take over the Earth for themselves. The conflict between one of these Abdicators and an Observer forms the upper level conflict of this novel.

The object both parties focus on, Angelo, is a twelve-year old prodigy, who is both an artist and a budding philosopher, a person who is likely to change human society towards a more peaceful, introspective, and accepting culture. But at Angelo's age he is going through the first problems of puberty and a very normal desire to be an accepted part of his peer group. His self-professed ten-year old girl friend Sharon shows signs of having the talent to become a world class pianist.

How both the Observer and the Abdicator meddle in these two peoples lives, how they grow and change, and the resultant effect on mankind as a whole forms the main part of the book.

The characters of Sharon and Angelo are superbly drawn, to where you will find it impossible not to become deeply involved with them. By the end of the book what happens to these two will more than likely reduce you to tears (I know I was very damp-eyed). But beyond these two the character of the Observer also slips into your heart, and the changes in his outlook make for both a bitter and an exhalting comment on what is both right and wrong with humans. This is very typical of Pangborn; all of his work is very people oriented, as opposed to gadgets or grand theories, and here it is presented almost perfectly.

There are some aspects of his envisioned future world that will seem either dated or wildly off the mark, (the book was written in 1954), but none of these items seriously impact the focus of this novel. Criminally out of print, this book was the Winner of the 1955 International Fantasy Award. This is one of those books that is very definitely 'literature' in the best sense of the word, a book that will uplift, that will entertain, that will force a serious examination of your world view, that will make you glad that you had the perception to obtain and read it.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN, LITERATE SCI-FI.......2001-08-16

I originally picked this book up because it appears in David Pringle's overview book "Sci Fi: The 100 Best Books." Now that I've read it, I can see why it was included. This is a terrific, beautifully written, literate sci-fi novel, with dozens of passages so quotable that you may feel the need to underline or highlight them. In this book, Martians have been living on Earth for thousands of years in hidden underground cities. For the most part, they are benevolent observers of human affairs, but there are some, the so-called Abdicators, who seek to overthrow and do away with mankind. This novel deals with the attempt of one of these Abdicators to corrupt a gifted human boy, and the attempt of one of the other observers to prevent it. Before the novel ends, the earth has gone through a major disaster, but there is still hope for man's ultimate fate. The author, Edgar Pangborn, takes his time with the story, and the characters are well drawn and believable. There's lots of poetic imagery and quasi-religious symbolism, as well as a good number of startling surprises. Seek this book out...it's a winner!

This was without a doubt the most thorough and comprehensive one volume work I have seen on Dale. I followed Dale for over 15 years and when he died a void was left that this book was able to fill. For anyone who is a fan of racing this tome shows what a great family man Dale was. From a novice to an old pro one can not help but get chills and thrills from recalling all the events in Dales life. If you can only buy one Dale book this is it. 5 stars for the book and raves for putting Dale in leather for the book like Dale should be long lasting.

                          Book Description

Toaster ovens aren't just for browning your bagel or warming up frozen pizza anymore. Lynn Alley, author of THE GOURMET SLOW COOKER, is earning a name for herself by finding unconventional and imaginative ways to prepare gourmet meals at home. In THE GOURMET TOASTER OVEN, she reveals why toaster ovens are ideal for creating simple yet sophisticated meals: they take up less space, use less energy, preheat quickly, and are cheaper than convection ovens. They also let you cook small meals more efficiently and provide additional oven space for side dishes when cooking a large meal. In this beautifully photographed book, Alley offers 50 breakfast, lunch, appetizer, dinner, and goodie recipes designed to serve two, promising incredible meals hot out of your (toaster) oven.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Gem!.......2007-04-11

"Gourmet" and "Toaster Oven" in the same title? You bet! I usually don't review cookbooks unless I feel they are special enough to encourage others to purchase them, and this one I recommend highly.

My family has downsized but my cooking enthusiasm has not and I am entertaining more often but with smaller guest lists. Heating up a gas oven for a small quiche to feed four seems a waste of energy (the planet's and my own) and time (my large toaster oven takes four minutes to reach 400 degrees: my oven, almost 15.) Also, with most recipes in the book serving 2-4, there is not the problem of reducing larger recipes and the resulting dreaded calculations. Quality ingredients well combined and engagingly presented replace long grocery lists and too many leftovers for a small family, singles, empty-nesters and the diet conscious (I mean, who of us really wants that chocolate cheesecake that serves 8 sitting temptingly in the 'frige after a dinner for 2-4?!)

The book itself is a quality paperback, large enough for lovely photos, a brief description of the recipe and suggestions, as well as print that is easy to read.

Well organized, with a good index, the book is divided into five sections, (as well as an informative description of toaster ovens and their features) which makes finding a recipe quick and easy. And, sit down for this, there are even wine suggestions for many of recipes...from toaster-oven cooking! Too cool.

The recipe chapters are: Breakfast, Lunch, Appetizers and Sides, Dinner and Tea and Goodies. Short lists of commonly available ingredients make it easy to take a basic recipe and imagine many substitutions for variety and what is available in your larder.

The Herbed Oven-Fried Chicken, Quiche Lorraine, Artisan Whole Wheat-Walnut Loaf, Banana-Walnut Muffins, Savory Cheesecakes (yup, that's what I said), Turkey, Tarragon, and Apple Meatloaf, Chocolate Lava Cakes...if I have to pick "favorites" these are just super. Yes, you can probably find similar recipes in your cookbook collection, but again, you don't have to do the arithmetic. I guarantee that no one will associate that toaster oven sitting innocently on your kitchen counter as the source of these lovely dishes. And you don't have to tell them, you know.

Of course, you will have to re-think baking pans, casserole dishes, etc. for these smaller amounts, but I have found some lovely and very useful such items on sale in most all places that carry cookware. Besides, if you are a true "foodie" imagine how happy your friends and relatives will be to have something new to give you for birthdays and holidays! And, think of all the room you can free up in your kitchen (large baking pans and huge casseroles can be stored under the bed with those "extra cookbooks"...well, it works for me!)

5 out of 5 stars Simple and sophisticated indeed!.......2006-12-28

Excellent set of sophisticated recipes downsized for small servings & simple execution. If you take the next year to practice each recipe you'll be well on your way to gourmet-hood! For example: Authentic English "High tea" scones.

2 out of 5 stars I wish there were more photos.......2006-08-30

I love using my toaster oven to make things, and was extremely excited about this book. But I'm a visual person and it's hard to be motivated to try out these recipes because most of them do not have photos. So if you like to see what you're about to make, I don't recommend this cookbook.

                          5 out of 5 stars long overdue.......2006-03-20

As an empty nester and avid cook, this book is perfect. Very tasty recipes without making huge quantities. The author has done her research and deserves credit for filling a rare niche
in this cookbook category. Shhh, don't tell my away-at-college children, but they will be receiving a copy of this book along with a nice toaster oven for Christmas. This is a cookbook everyone could use for fresh ideas, from Anzacs to Yogurt Baked Chicken with wine pairings suggested for many dishes. I wish I had thought of it first.
