I, the Divine: A Novel in First Chapters
ASIN: 0312200412 |
Book Description
A provocative first collection of stories by the author of Koolaids
Following the publication of his critically acclaimed first novel, Koolaids, Rabih Alameddine offers a collection of stories that explores the experience of a number of Lebanese characters - men and women, gay and straight--whose lives have been blown apart by a disastrous civil war and the resulting international diaspora. Daring in style as well as content, these tales explore the relationships that anchor our hearts to the world -- father and son, grandson and grandmother, pedophile and 12-year-old boy, young man and woman of the streets, sister and sister, daughter and father, gay man and heterosexual, the quick and their dead.
Suffused by a yearning for what has been lost, these narratives are both experimental and traditional, humorous and disturbing, and confirm without doubt that Alemeddine is one of the most original and accomplished young writers to emerge in some time.

Eye Opener.......1999-11-16
Living in the Unites States, the war in Lebanon was what I saw on TV. Perhaps because of our bias media, I never felt pity like I did during the Kosovo problem. Reading this book made me realize what the war did to a wonderful people, the Lebanese. The author is brave and does not hesitate nor spare your feelings.
Wonderful.......1999-10-31
This is an amazing book, outrageous, fun, heartbreaking and poingant. It is very different than the writer's Koolaids. I could not put it down. The title story shook me to the core. Great book.
Book Description
Set in 1970, in the last, dark days of hippiedom, Perv -- A Love Story is the saga of Bobby Stark, a sixteen-year-old batch of desire and angst struggling to stay sane in a world gone Day-Glo.
As the novel opens, Bobby loses his virginity in a drug-addled tryst with a one-armed barber's daughter. For his sins he's thrown out of school and dispatched to live with his mom, a festive electro shock aficionado, whose condo he flees to track down Michelle, the gorgeously damaged, lasped Hare Krishna-ette he's adored since kindergarten.
Like the rest of their generation, the couple hit the road for California, only to be picked up in a hell-fueled Lincoln by a pair of Bad Hippies -- Meat and Varnish -- smacked-out spiritual cousins to Charles Manson. From here the trip gets vicious....
Already an underground classic, Perv-A Love Story is relentlessly twisted, sexy, and savagely funny literary excursion, a novel of doomed youth in the era when Flower Power had begun to wilt.

A letdown........2006-07-18
Like another reviewer, I had previously read "Permanent Midnight" and LOVED it, so I was definitely looking forward to getting my meathooks on more of Jerry Stahl's work. Unfortunately, this one turned out to be a major letdown. The first chapter was quite amusing, so my hopes were high, but as the book went on I just waited and waited for something engaging to happen, and it never did. The ending was so abrupt and lame, I got the impression that Mr. Stahl just got tired of writing and stopped.
Don't waste your time with this one. Re-read "Midnight" instead.
Perversion Should Be Made of Sterner Stuff.......2005-12-01
"Catcher in the Rye," this ain't.
"Perv" drags and drags and drags. The whole story basically consists of two scenes with some filler and exposition thrown in between and at the end. Scene One involves the hero being imprisoned in the basement of a deranged, one-armed barber who wants to give the hero a tatoo because he had sex with the barber's daughter. It goes on and on and on, but gets nowhere. Then comes some filler, in which the hero, in a very Holden-Caufield-clone manner, gets kicked out of boarding school and runs away from home, meeting a girl he'd long been pining for along the way. And so we get to Scene Two, in which the hero gets imprisoned . . . again, except this time it's in the back of a speeding car driven by two deranged drug users. Oh, and the girl is there, too. Again, it goes on and on and on . . . .
I suppose what annoyed me the most was the fact that the hero, despite the title, didn't seem like much of a "Perv." His sexual interests and proclivities seemed fairly typical for a teenaged boy. However, the title suggests that the story is going to be about someone who's, well, a "perv," or at least perceived to be perverted in some way, although not necessarily in the sexual sense. Instead, Jerry Stahl gives us a very average tale of a very average teenage boy. Sure, he thinks about sex all the time and checks out women's underwear in the laundry room, but so what? Perversion should be made of sterner stuff.
Great read!.......2004-11-14
This was the first book I've read by Jerry Stahl and I must say that I am looking forward to reading more of his stuff. I finished the book in only a few days - I just couldn't put it down. It's the story of a twisted adventure that only someone with an open mind can appreciate. I highly recommend it.
Oh, Jerry Stahl, Jerry Stahl..........2004-05-10
I guess I liked this.... I guess? I'm just kind of confused. I mean, I didn't not like it, but it wasn't the best. I suppose I was just a bit disappointed after reading Permanent Midnight and then reading this. Permanent Midnight was SO good! It was SO good, and after I finished, I couldn't wait to get my unsanitary hands all over another one of Mr. Stahl's books. So I bought this one. I don't know, it was okay. I just think he could've done better.
I just didn't really like a couple of the characters. Tennie Toad was stupid. I didn't like that kid. I wanted to smack him around and call him Penny and ask "Do ya lak that?" Hahaha. I didn't like either of the Schmidlaps. Mr. S. reminded me of this psycho old guy that is stalking me over the internet. I can imagine them to have the same voice. And they both seem like drunken idiots.
I did like the ending. It wasn't what you'd expect or anything. It wasn't a happy, happy ending, but it wasn't sad. It was just fine. Well, it was kind of sad. I don't know. And this book was very interesting. I think I finished it in about a day and a half; it usually takes me a 1.5 or 2 weeks to complete a book, for I never seem to make time. I am such a busy girl! Anyway, the good does outweigh the bad.
So, if you want to read this AND Permanent Midnight, read this first. You will enjoy this so much better, and your reading adventures will be much more exciting and fulfilling, or something.
Nothing like being smacked in the head..........2004-03-04
Perv: A Love Story does just that. You have to get through three quarters of the book to understand what I'm talking about, but you'll get it. You think the beginning is shocking? You think anything in the middle is disturbing? Just wait until the end. Based on the graphic details of what occurs to Bobby and Michelle with their, let's call them, captors, I can only assume Mr. Stahl has been there and done that.
Overall, it was a funny and sad story, but I don't think Stahl wants us to feel sorry for the main character. As stated in the book at some point, there's empathy and there's sympathy. I think Stahl wants us to empathize with the characters but to just stand back a minute and not get too close.
Recommended for those that aren't uptight. If you are, you won't even get through the first couple of pages.

Not "canonical" Darkover, but fun anyway.......2000-08-23
These books were written early in the author's career, and have many inconsistencies with the rest of the Darkover series. Nevertheless, taken as stand-alone novels, they are both enjoyable. The Planet Savers is an interesting study of a man with two personalities, representing opposite psychological extremes... and what happens when those personalities are put under stress. Overall, these are fun "light" SF reading, not to be taken too seriously, but good for an evening's entertainment.

excellent!.......2000-07-03
I thought the book was amazing, couldn't put it down. being a musician, i found it intriguing how Louise Marley wove musical concepts into the plot. I've now read the whole trilogy 3 times over, and still love it!
Fab Idea - Needs Mature Writing.......2000-04-12
I've read the trilogy three times now, and although I really enjoy the books, the flaws bother me. (1) physical details that don't add up and (2) lack of plot & character complexity.
Just to mention a couple of the physical problems: what are they eating? It is not possible to grow enough food in greenhouses to support a population (even with meat). What is pollenating those plants? The author should have created a couple of native root/nut staples.
Another problem, the characters are constantly melting snow in their mouths to drink. No one experienced in severe cold climates does this. It takes too many calories and drops your body temperature. Which brings up another thing - where are the real cold adaptations: double doors, quilted clothes, stove beds.
It was great, I could not possibly put it down!.......1999-01-13
Sira's quest for belonging was extraordinary especially when she was out alone in freezing temperatures on the ice planet. Nevya itself was a world worth reading about. All of the excitment, adventure and drama represented in the book makes Louise Marley an aspiring writer. I'm looking forward to reading more of her books.
Wonderful start for emerging author Louise Marley.......1997-07-07
This one is great for sci-fi and fantasy fans. Sira's quest will keep you riveted as you read. A definite winner
Anne McCaffrey fans now have another great, must-read author.......1997-03-06
Fans of Anne McCaffrey, especially Pern, should enjoy the Singer trilogy. The writing style strikes me as very similar to Anne, and yet the characters and story are unique. The books (also Sing the Warmth) draw you into the story and makes you feel a part of it. On my scale it rates an excellent can't-get-me-away-from-this-book one-sitting read

EXHAUSTIVE, ACCURATE, INFORMATIVE.......2007-01-14
Susan Sackett gives a readable, digestable and loving look at each song that got the Academy's nod as a Best Song nominee. Not overly encyclopedic yet well-detailed, this compendium offers the story behind the song itself, interesting asides about the writers and how the song was used in each film Included, too, are anecdotes, industry quotes and anomalies that make each entry even more interesting.
The book cuts off in 1992 and was never updated. It would be great to have the last 15 years of nominees represented, as well.

Learning to Sing Non-Classical Music.......2002-12-06
A very informative book. Talks about a variety of musical styles and gives exercise suggestions for practicing them. Also gives information on microphone technique. This is more in-depth than most vocal books. I really appreciated the depth and breadth of vocal information.
It is a great and complete guide of singing technique.......1999-07-26
As a singing teacher of non classical music, I can certainly suggest that this is the best book I have read on this matter. It is really impossible to find a book where classical singing is not envolved. And I can assure you that there are great differences between both techniques...!
Valuable to both young singer and experienc.......1998-03-19
This is a focussed and well organized manual on singing. Dr. Combs deep understanding of the voice is made evident through concise explanation and facilitated where necessary through reference to other more detailed publications(including an annotated bibliography). I use this guide in my vocal pedagogy class along with Vennard and Miller (both of which do not address the unique aspects of the Pop/Broadway Singer). College students tell me that it provides a more "user-friendly" description which helps in their more detailed study.
Book Description
"Cook well. Eat well. That's always been my philosophy," Karen Barnaby says. "I've just translated it into low-carbing." Anyone who is currently on-or contemplating embarking upon-one of the many low-carb diets will find The Low-Carb Gourmet to be a goldmine of recipes, tips, and inspiration.
The first sophisticated low-carb cookbook on the market from acclaimed chef Karen Barnaby, who has lost 70 pounds through low-carb eating.
Over the past few years, low-carb high-protein diets have changed the way America eats. But how much steak, bacon, and cheese can a person eat? Low-carbers have been looking for a cookbook that will give them the variety, sophistication, and sublime taste sensations that the true food lover craves-and yet will allow them to reap the weight-loss and health benefits of low-carb eating.
In The Low-Carb Gourmet, award-winning Canadian cookbook author Karen Barnaby, executive chef of the famed Fish House in Vancouver, applies her carb-cutting techniques to sophisticated dishes, including soups, snacks, sauces, main dishes, and even spectacular sweets. The 250 recipes range from Prawns with Peppery Garlic Vinaigrette, Guacamole, and Pancetta Wrapped Salmon with Red Wine Butter to Beef Salad with Creamy Horseradish Dressing, Daikon Radish, Chinese Cabbage and Tofu Soup, Pumpkin Cheesecake, and Tiramisu. The author reveals some secrets to low-carb shopping and offers expert
advice on meal planning for special occasions.
Customer Reviews:
very good.......2007-02-19
Good but when you want fast recies not this book. But nice stuff.
Just not fast.
The low-carb tabbouli was so good, I had to write a review!.......2006-12-31
As stated previously by other reviewers, the recipes in this book are awesome. I have purchased many low-carb cookbooks over the years (at least 15), but this is by far the most used cookbook I own. The instructions are clear, the ingredients are easy to find and the flavors are great! I have found that many of the low-carb cookbooks that I own focus on getting the carb counts within a certain range without really paying attention to the ingredients being used. Fortunately, this is not the case with this book. Every recipe that I have tried has turned out wonderfully. I still have plenty of recipes that I need to try out! The dessert recipes are a standout for me because most of the ingredients used are those you can find in a well stocked supermarket (you can find almond meal at any Trader Joe's or from an online source). I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for new ideas and really tasty food. This is definitely worth every penny; it is the most expensive low-carb cookbook I own, but also the most used!
Just an aside: the recipes really do work. There were times when I was skeptical about some of the ingredients or the amounts used, but every time I have made a recipe, it has turned out wonderfully. Give this book a try!
I'd give this one 6 stars if I could!.......2006-10-13
I love this book! I have been low-carbing for just over a year now, with great success in the weight-loss department. But I was bored and generally disappointed with the recipes from diet books, such as The South Beach Diet (all 3 books): a few of the recipes were good, some were bad and most were boring.
I was so excited when I found this book. I was already familiar with Karen Barnaby - her first book, Pacific Passions, is one of my alltime favorite cookbooks. So I was sure her recipes would be great tasting. And they were! So far, I have made about 1/2 the recipes in the book and I LOVE THEM ALL! Even my non-low-carb husband enjoys them.
Some of the best of the best are:
* Mom's Cauliflower Salad - I made this for a party and everyone raved about it, several people asked for the recipe.
* Chilled Cucumber & Avocado Soup - quick, easy & great on a hot day
* Scalloped Savoy Cabbage - my husband does not usually like cooked cabbage, but he loved this.
* Twice-Baked Cauliflower - so good I could eat it every single day.
* Oven-Fried chicken - nearly as good as the "real thing".
* Turkey Snackin' Cake - all the traditional Thanksgiving flavors in one easy dish.
* Shepherd's Pie with Smoked Cheddar - one of the best recipes in the book. My husband said it was the best shepherd's pie I'd ever made, much better than the potato-topped kind. And he is a HUGE potato lover!
* Keema - I made this with ground lamb! I noted in the book to always make a full batch or there aren't enough leftovers.
* Donald's Deep Dish Pizza Quiche - I was a bit skeptical, but this was quite fabulous. Really cures pizza cravings, and it's quite quick to make.
The list goes on and on, but these are some of the best recipes I tried, low-carb or otherwise. Some of the recipes are very "gourmet" (KB is a restaurant chef, after all), but most are fairly easy to make and don't require a lot of hard to find ingredients. If you're bored with other low-carb cookbooks, give this one a try!
Also, check out Karen's website. She herself is a low-carb success story.
Tantalizing recipes.......2006-08-10
I just got this book from a book club and even though I didn't pay $35 for it, I think it would be worth $35 just for the Donald's Deep Dish Pizza Quiche recipe! I made it today, and it's outstanding. Both my daughters were begging for slices. I was just getting so sick of scrambled eggs for breakfast, and the author suggests several alternatives on the breakfast main page, including recipes from other sections of her cookbook. There are a number of recipes I'm looking forward to trying, like Brussels sprouts with cream cheese and nutmeg (she swears it'll make a sprouts eater out of anyone) and Chicken with bacon cream and thyme.
Great for low carbs, breaks the rules for health.......2006-06-05
Karen, obviously a self styled expert, seems to have calculated what is low carb and what is not, and simply made up recipes on the erroneous assumption that all low carb is good for health. Included in her recipes are ingredients which are toxic, carcinogenic, allergenic etc. Examples. She uses balsamic vinegar, which is made by boiling vinegar in copper, with added sugar. Copper is a vector in ALL tumors, (Hulda Clark) and sugar needs no more discussion. Bacon. All bacon has MSG, a neuro-toxin one of its many harmful side effects is arrhythmia, that can and does lead to cardiac arrest. Tofu. Soy has isoflavones, trypsin, phytates and other toxic substances. The results of consuming non-fermented soy are devastating. Health benefits have been disproved. (Mary Enig PhD). Splenda has an attached chlorine atom and users are reporting a multitude of toxic side effects. ('(Dr) mercola.com) Olive oil is heated, losing its benfits and changing its chemistry to the 'bad' category aka most vegetable oils except coconut and palm. Unnamed 'vegetable oil' is used. Des she mean that soy and canola oil, both highly toxic, (mercola.com, herbalhealer.com) can be included in her recipes? It makes little sense to buy a recipe book that spells health disaster for you and family, simply by trusting an author just because she claims to be an 'expert'.
