I don't view this book with an ideological mind, as other reviewer pointed.

The important point is that you will have much fun with the descriptions of what can happen to the guys in the money world.

What I can guarantee you is that you'll finish reading this book in 1, 2 or 3 days !

Very amusing. Enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars Good for some, not so good for others.......2000-06-01

On the one hand, Mr. Hailey's artistic brilliance is impossible to deny. He's one of the most skilled writers around, if not the best. His stories are realistic, thrilling, touching, funny - in that sense, they are likely to exceed your expectations. This book, too, contains plot lines, scenes and characters that are just fabulous.

On the other hand, this book has one really annoying flaw: Mr. Hailey makes a very strong political statement in support of value-destroyers. By those, I mean incapable people who attempt to destroy other people's productive achievements by making them feel guilty for no legitimate reason. Productive and selfish people are described very negatively in this book. If you tend to the Socialist/PC way of thinking, you'll just love the book. If you are a supporter of freedom and free enterprise, you might find this book more or less disturbing.

If you haven't read any of Mr. Hailey's works before, you better choose Airport. That's a true masterpiece, uncomparable with Moneychangers. If you are, however, a fan of Mr. Hailey and familiar with most of his works, there's no reason why you shouldn't read this book as well.

5 out of 5 stars a very insightful book. good characterizations.......1999-07-20

This book is one of Arthur Hailey's best books and well worth reading, both for insights into another industry (which Hailey always does well) and for well-constructed characters.

4 out of 5 stars enter the bankers' world!.......1997-11-23

What did I know about banks before? A little! But since I read this book, I knew more about banks and the dillemas they face amidst the ordinary revolution of this naive world. It offers a view of a collapsing realm of economy, that which holds the blood line of society. Good!

          Book Description

During the economic depression of the 1890s and the speculative frenzy of the following decade, Wall Street, high finance, and market crises assumed unprecedented visibility in the United States. Fiction writers published scores of novels in the period that explored this new cultural phenomenon. In Panic!, David A. Zimmerman studies how American novelists and their readers imagined--and in one case, incited--market crashes and financial panics.

Panic! examines how Americans' attitudes toward securities markets, popular investment, and financial catastrophe were entangled with their conceptions of gender, class, crowds, corporations, and history. Zimmerman investigates how writers turned to mob psychology, psychic investigations, and conspiracy discourse to understand not only how financial markets worked, but also how mass acts of financial reading, including novel reading, could trigger economic disaster and cultural chaos. In addition, Zimmerman shows how, by concentrating on markets in crisis, novelists were able to explore the limits of fiction's aesthetic, economic, and ethical capacities. With readings of canonical as well as lesser-known novelists, Zimmerman provides an original and wide-ranging analysis of the relation between fiction and financial modernity.

Then he went on to the plate-mill, where giant hammers resounded, and steel plates of several inches' thickness were chopped and sliced like pieces of cheese. Here the spectator stared about him in bewilderment and clung to his guide for safety; huge travelling cranes groaned overhead, and infernal engines made deafening clatter upon every side. It was a source of never ending wonder that men should be able to work in such confusion, with no sense of danger and no consciousness of all the uproar.

Upton Sinclair writes an historic novel concerning the Wall Street scare of 1907. He describes how several formidable capitalists organize the fall of a rival trust company. The ruin of this enterprise effects a stock market crash and a bank run; the ultimate cost is the loss of thousands of jobs which throws the world into financial chaos. Allan Montague, a prosperous New York lawyer, relates the story through his introduction to many of the power players who have invested millions in the stock market. By using fronts and shill companies these powerful men allege that their only aim is to sell things--but they do not actually make anything. Because of this ruse, the public and the government put money into the soon-to-be-bankrupt companies created by these confidence men. They aren't really interested in the investments but, rather, they exist to outmaneuver the other player. Sinclair uncovers the evidence of backroom thievery and the direct manipulation of the stock market. He wanted to present this situation fictitiously to the American public and show them that if it actually occurred, the turmoil would be real. 4 out of 5 stars Thriller / Suspense / Mystery of sorts............2000-06-11

Muckraker, Upton Sinclair, tells the fictionalized story of the Wall Street panic of 1907. The panic, according to Sinclair, was orchestrated by several very powerful capitalists in order to dethrone a rival trust company. They did this because man's revenge over being smitten by a woman, to put the anti-trust President in his place, and greed. The ruin of the rival trust company caused a stock market crash and a bank rush which ultimately cost thousands their jobs and savings and put the entire world into financial turmoil.

The story is told through the eyes of Allan Montague -- a successful lawyer living in New York. Through the course of the story he becomes introduced to several power players -- many of whom have millions riding in the stock market. These big players, also use fronts and shill companies whose only purpose is to sell things -- they do not make anything. This gets the public and the government to invest in their companies which ultimately go bankrupt.

The players in the story aren't too terribly interested in money. They use it as points and live to out maneuver the other. Sinclair reveals the back room shanagans of the stock market and the manipulations they pulled on the market. In addition, he points out the press was unable to print the "truth" on account that many of the corporations owned the newspapers.

The book was a little hard to follow despite Sinclair's lucid writing style. There were many players in the story, many making brief and periodic appearances. Also, the economic theory behind the maneuverings could leave a reader a little bewildered if they aren't up on the subject of trusts, stocks, high finance and corporations. Although, I suspect that many of the manipulations the capitalists did have been corrected thanks to modern checks and safeguards, the book does reveal the vast amount of corruption on all levels of the American system: the government, banks, and other businesses manipulating other businesses. This book was almost a thriller / mystery and was entertaining and informative throughout.

                  5 out of 5 stars A great stand-alone novel .......2006-05-18

This was the most enjoyable MTG book I've read thus far. This stand-alone novel is a quick and exciting read that would be great for anyone looking for something easy and relaxing. The development of the story is fast-paced with a surprising amount of complexity in the characters, cultures, and lands. Sumner is outstanding at creating a vivid and believable picture of a strange land with strange inhabitants with strange customs in few words. While this book will only take a couple of days to read, you'll be surprised at how quickly and deeply you are drawn into the story of Telli and Recin, and their struggle to introduce peace to a troubled land.

Also, you do not need any prior knowledge of MTG or any of the previous books to fully appreciate this one. Sumner made no attempt to tie in this book with MTG the game, which really freed him up to create his own work. For all intents and purposes, this book could have been published in any of the open-optioned fantasy collections.

Definitely better than most MTG books, I'd reccomend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars When Peace is the Price, What Price Is Too High?.......2006-04-08

"The Prodigal Sorcerer", the fantastical tour-de-force of acclaimed fantasist Mark Sumner, paints a radical picture of a world straddling the knife-edge over the abyss. The depth of social commentary in this masterwork is, frankly, astonishing; in the main character "Tagard Tarngold" one finds shades of such legendary figures as Frederick Douglass or Harriett Tubman. No ivory tower for this wizard: he reluctantly leaves behind the trappings of his sheltered, academic life for a life in the service of justice. In this character we find triumphs and tragedies; conquests and capitulations; virtues and vices. In his falling and his redemption we find a startlingly clear picture of ourselves.

Their world, like ours, walks a tightrope over the abyss, and if we cannot each, within ourselves, find a Tagard Tarngold, then our world will fall victim to its own division and plunge into that eternal void; because when you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you also.

A masterpiece of post-modern neo-Tolkien fantasy, with shades of George R.R. Martin, Roger Zelazny and L. Sprague de Camp. This is a work not to be missed by any connoiseur of the fine literature. 5 Stars!

                      Book Description

                      Every Life
                      Makes a Story

Djo has a story: Once he was one of "Titid's boys," a vital member of Father Jean-Bertrand Aristide's election team, fighting to overthrow military dictatorship in Haiti. Now he is barely alive, the victim of a political firebombing.

Jeremie has a story: Convent-educated Jeremie can climb out of the slums of Port-au-Prince. But she is torn between her mother's hopes and her own wishes for herself ... and for Haiti.

Father Jean-Bertrand Aristide has a story: A dream of a new Haiti, one in which every person would have a decent life ... a house with a roof ... clean water to drink ... a good plate of rice and beans every day ... a field to work in.

At Aristide's request, Djo tells his story to Jeremie -- for Titid believes in the power of all of their stories to make change. As Jeremie listens to Djo, and to her own heart, she knows that they will begin a new story, one that is all their own, together.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful glimpse of Haiti.......2006-08-16

Although this book was written for young adult/teenagers it is really beautifully written and suitable for any age. The stories portray a very accurate view of the lives young people lead in Haiti. Very well done.

4 out of 5 stars The sad story of Haiti continues.......2003-09-09

I'm reading this book because it is on The Battle of the Books list in Scottsdale AZ. Students read books and answer questions in a "Jeopardy" type contest, and I always read along with my grandchildren. I am very happy that this book is on the list for 7-8 graders. A Taste of Salt refers to the key to releasing zombies, and in this book reading is the taste of salt for the lost boys of Port-au-Prince, as they are rescued by Father Aristede. Djo, a leader of the boys, lays dying in the hospital as his story is recorded by Jeremie, a convent-raised young woman sent by Aristede. Djo was kidnapped by government troops to work in the sugar cane fields of the Dominican Republic (I'll always think of Djo and the cane cutters when I buy sugar) and his years there are terrible. I looked on Human Rights Watch website and found that there are 500,000 Haitians still working in the cane fields in deplorable conditions. "Father" Titid is now married, president of Haiti, and perpetuating the same dreadful oppression upon the people which he formerly preached against. A revolution gone wrong, as they often do, but an important and touching story of the strength of young people.

                      4 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2002-04-03

Taste of Salt, by Frances Temple is the best book I have read yet. This book teaches you how life is special. The book has emotion, love, happiness, loneliness, and a lot more real feelings people have. The best part is the writer is very graphic in her writing, you almost feel like you were there. The whole book is interesting, you never get tired of reading it. I think Taste of Salt can touch many people in different ways.

                      4 out of 5 stars A tale of Haiti.......2002-01-11

Taste of Salt, written by Frances Temple, is a provocative, exciting tale of the life of a young Haitian man, Djo, and the struggle against a dictatorship that hired Macoutes, thugs, to keep itself in power. Djo grew up on the streets with his brother before Father Aristide, known to them as Titid, adopted them. Djo was injured by Macoutes who firebombed him. Now he lies in a hospital bed telling his story to a student of a nun school named Jeremie. She listens.
There are several reasons to read this book, but the two greatest are its complex setting and the intricate writing style. The setting is elaborate as the book takes place in 1991in the city of Port-Au-Prince, when people were trying to attain a democracy and end the dictatorship of Jean-Claude Duvalier who named himself president for life and hired Macoutes. The writing style is unique as it has many flashbacks and the story is half from Djo's view and half from Jeremie's view. The flashbacks are interesting as they tell how the characters came to their current state and telling what they did until then. Also the different characters views have are written slightly different with slightly different writing styles that reflect the different characters speech styles.
This book is quite good but some may find fault with the fact that it uses some Creole words that can be quite confusing and force you to look back to the glossary disrupting. Though at first it may appear a negative fact, by the end it becomes interesting and you feel you have learned a little of their culture. However, even if one finds the Creole to be disrupting they will still enjoy the overall quality of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for classroom use!.......2000-07-01

I recently read this book in order to find fresh literature to present in the classroom. I can't wait to read this with my 7th-grade English students. Because of its structure, Taste of Salt lends itself to many creative teaching strategies. The values and themes are very relevant to our students today. Read it and you will see!

My hubby and I are both of African West Indian decent. My husband is haitian-american but does not know to cook haitian food! How awful. So, I bought this book for him and he agrees that all of the recipies and ingrediants are authentic from the spices to the names of the meals the selves. It smells and taste wonderful just like his mothers. Finally, he is cooking the haitian food i love!

                      1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-03-05

I am not Haitian. Having said that the recipes did not help. I tried to make one of the recipes and it did not taste like it said. My husband said maybe certain things are implied but recipes are supposed to be instructional. I actually found other recipes that came out phenomenally elsewhere.

                      5 out of 5 stars cookbook.......2007-02-15

I am from Haiti and that book is excellent, very helpful. I will reorder it since I gave that one to my daughter.

                      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-02-14

This book is exactly what I was looking for. Many recipes from other authors are just wrong or totally confusing. But the book of Mrs Thomas is very detailed, easy to follow, which is exactly what I wanted, and the recipes' details look delicious.
I am about to buy this book now, and I want to say to Myrta and her family: GOOD JOB!!! Not only for the recipes but for the tales and all.

I am a young haitian woman who used to be a rebel and never wanted to learn how to cook. Now I am trying to learn because to me haitian food is the best. I am helped by my family and friends but with Mrs Thomas' book, I think and I hope that the learning process will be a lot easier.
