For All Confidential Matters and Inquiries
Satisfaction Guaranteed for all Parties

The phenomenal success of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency continues with the bestselling Kalahari Typing School for Men, the fourth book in the series.

Mma Precious Ramotswe is content. Her business is well established with many satisfied customers, and in her mid-thirties (“the finest age to be”) she has a house, two adopted children, a fine fiancé. But, as always, there are troubles. Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni has not set the date for their marriage. Her able assistant, Mma Makutsi, wants a husband. And worse, a rival detective agency has opened in town—an agency that does not have the gentle approach to business that Mma Ramotswe’s does. But, of course, Precious will manage these things, as she always does, with her uncanny insight and her good heart.

4 out of 5 stars Another Fun Volume of the Ladies' Detective Agency.......2007-08-13

This is a solid edition to the collection which means this will be a short review! The only thing I will note about this book is that I felt the ending and the resolution of one of the "mysteries" was a bit too easy. That being said; the book on a whole is just as enjoyable as the rest of the series. I can't wait to get into the 5th book!

3 out of 5 stars the least mysterious so far.......2007-06-28

At this point, entering the fourth book in the series, we are all accustomed to Mma Ramotswe and her alternative brand of mystery. One or two mysteries carry through the book, with a couple more short ones in the midst, balanced with a healthy serving of Mma Ramotswe's wisdom and her reflections on the greatness of Botswana. Always relaxing and mildly suspenseful.

This one has a subtle difference: there are no actual mysteries. The agency takes on two cases: one involves tracking down some old acquaintances, and the solution to the other is apparent to the reader within a few lines of the client walking through the door.

What does that leave us with? Mma Ramotswe has competition in the form of a rude man who sets up a rival detective agency (Trust your problems to a _man_!, says the ad). The foster children experience growing pains. Mma Makutsi seeks a way to earn some extra cash. Mma Ramotse dispenses wisdom and reflects on Botswana.

This is still a very pleasant read, Mma Ramotswe has some good insights to share, and the developments in the characters' personal lives are interesting. If you are lucky enough to have access to the audiobook, Lisette Lecat's narration is excellent and soothing as always. I'm glad I read it, but don't come looking for mystery.

5 out of 5 stars I'm totally hooked!! .......2007-06-04

Having found this series a little less than a month ago, I find myself totally hooked on the characters and setting that Mr. McCall Smith describes. I found this book rich and "meaty" with tremendously uplifting references to the African culture and Botswana. I am thankful that this is a prolific author as my thirst for his writing is tremendous!!! It is wonderful to feel this way again, it doesn't often happen.

5 out of 5 stars Dusty Days In Boswana.......2007-05-14

Another polished gem where the No1 Ladies Detective Agency unknot the thorny problems of life over cups of bush tea. Precious has her sturdy feet firmly on the ground and her very traditional build projects the air of confidence that is so soothing to the callers passing through their door. The interplay between the two women is always a joy and deftly done. Precious is keen to see that her assistant should find true happiness in her life. Much the same as she has, but then she isn't hampered by a difficult complexion and very large glasses. Not to mention a prickly personality, although her assistant is a very good person with a good heart.
Meanwhile her assistant often yearns for just a little more glamour and excitement in her life, she knows she is not one of the pretty girls who get easy lives and rich husbands. Not only that, she is always in need of extra money even though her boss pays her as well as she can, so to make up the shortfall she sets up the Kalahari Typing School For Men. Reasoning quite rightly that men don't want to be shamed by having the ladies outshine them. The classes prove a great success and before too long teacher finds she is being wooed by one of her pupils. But sadly he isn't quite what he seems to be. There are others masquerading as something else and they must also be unmasked. But our ladies are up to the tasks, Precious never loses sight of what is important and knows just when to step in and when to hang back.
Problems are solved, hearts eased and things are put back to rights without too much harm done. So life trundles on and Precious carries on pottering about in a tiny white van that one day must surely die. Just not yet.
Once you get to know these books am sure you will also love to reading and re-read them as it is like sharing a cup of tea with a dear friend. More to the point it is tea with a friend full of good advice and accumulated wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars a whole new meaning to the term "sleeping with a man".......2007-05-01

I love this book and this series. The dialouge is witty, the stories are creative. I love the way that Mma Ramotswe thinks and handles problems. I also really enjoy all the other charachters. I loved seeing Mma Makutsi open up her school and feel successful. I reccommend this series to everyone that I know.

                    3 out of 5 stars A disappointing end to a great trilogy.......2007-06-18

To be totally honest, this book disappointed me. Where the first book took place in Sharn and the second in Xen'drik, this one takes place in the realm of faeries which to be totally honest I didn't find especially interesting. On the bright side, it adds a great new character to the main cast (one of the drow from the end of the second book) and it finally clears up what transpired at Keldan Ridge. Overall, the meat of the book was pretty decent, but the ending really seems anti-climactic... The epilogue alone is worth losing a rating point over.

The first two books of the trilogy were absolutely fantastic, and it'd be a shame not to read this book if you've already done the first two, but it is still a sad end... Honestly, I think the book might stand up better on its own rather than standing in the shadow of the first two books of the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars A fine conclusion to an excellent trilogy.......2007-04-17

This final book of the Dreaming Dark trilogy is much like the first two. Fast-paced and exciting action in a strange new world with unique and well-developed characters. As Daine, Peirce, and Lei (and Jode) travel to other dimensions in their effort to escape death at the hands of Harmattan, they find answers to their pasts and their destinies in unlikely places. Much of this book is pretty strange, with the heroes actually leaving the world of Eberron and traveling to a world of dreams. A new character, Xu'Sassar, is introduced and adds significantly to the story but isn't nearly as well-fleshed out as the others. This book is noticeably shorter than the previous two, with words spaced out more and in larger font, but taking up the same number of pages. It doesn't take away from the story however, and you never get the feel that it was rushed.

Baker does an excellent job of wrapping up the story and explaining the hows and whys of the many mysteries he'd introduced in the first two books. You'll finally understand Lei and Peirce's pasts, as well as what happened to Jode. All in all, this book serves as a fine conclusion to an excellent trilogy. I look forward to reading more of the Eberron novels.

3 out of 5 stars Average, just average.......2006-11-16

The Gates of Night by Keith Baker is the third, and final, book in the Dreaming Dark Trilogy set in the Eberron world. The first two books in this trilogy are The City of Towers and The Shattered Land. If you want any chance of understanding the events in this book you really need to read the first two. The events of this book pick up right where book two ended, and to totally understand the story, and characters the first two books should be read.

The characters in this book are mostly characters from the first two books. Of course through their adventure, they meet new people and see new things. Yet, largely the cast of characters is unchanged from the first two books. Each characters does experience some type of development in this book, but some of the development seems `wrong' and just convoluted for no reason. After reading this entire trilogy, the only character I really cared fro was the Warforged Pierce. The other characters were just uninteresting to me. Then, as the character development continued to take place Mr. Baker pulled each character farther and farther away from who they had been in the first two books. To me, if you are going to do dramatic character development, and have three books to do it in, why not separate it into all three books instead of jamming it into the last book and leaving the reader confused as to who the character actual is when the book is finished.

The plot did a decent enough job of continuing from the first two books. However, much like the first book, I felt Mr. Baker tried to jam way too much information into this book at various stages. There is probably a 150-200 page section in the middle of the book that was solid, and fun to read. Yet the beginning, and the end of the book felt rushed to me simply because of everything Mr. Baker tried to include. The most disappointing thing, to me, about this book is the epilogue. After three books worth of information and story, the reader is given a two page epilogue and that is supposed to clear it up. I honestly felt cheated when I finished this book. The overall storyline is vast and somewhat complex, but not too complex where readers will have problems following things. It's a decent story, nothing great or fantastic, but not bad either.

Something's that irritated me while I read this book are while the main characters are on their journey the amount of `gifts' they get from people. That was like saying, "Hey, your not powerful enough yet, let me give you no chance of losing." The another gift happens to fall into their hands.

                    **** SPOILER****

The other thing that irritated me was all the instances of multiple people/essences in one body. How many does a book really need? Wasn't there a better way to get that across?

                    ***End of Spoiler***

Overall, I thought this book was average. It held my attention, but I could simply care less about most of the characters and the story seemed to `easy' for the characters when it should have been a very difficult thing. I know Mr. Baker created the world of Eberron, and from what I have read (novel wise) there are many interesting things in Eberron - but maybe Mr. Baker should focus on campaign things for Eberron instead of novels. I can't say this trilogy was anything special for me.

                    4 out of 5 stars 3.6 stars, really........2004-07-31

This was an enjoyable story, better than just okay if not particularly spectacular. It's kind of weak as a four-star, but is a little too good to be just a three-star. The personifications of Major Kira and Doctor Bashir seem a bit exaggerated, a bit too 2-dimensional, and the baby hortas should have been a little easier to deal with than they were (just keep transporting them back to where you want them; you may not be able to keep them there, but there's no reason you can't keep sending them back faster than they can get away) but other than that, the story was very well handled and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars DS9 #11 Devil in the Sky - An enjoyable Trek tale!.......2003-11-03

I found it interesting to read in the interview with Greg Cox by Kevin Dilmore in the back of "Star Trek The Q Continuum" that Greg Cox and John Gregory Betancourt had written "Devil in the Sky" with only the series bible, the script for "Emissary" and having only watched a few episodes. The reason I found this so interesting is that in this novel, which was the inaugural Star Trek novel for both authors, they captured the characters and the feel of Star Trek Deep Space Nine so well. You will quickly find that the pacing of this novel and both authors overall writing styles lend well to a quick and thoroughly enjoyable read.

Both authors proved with this novel that both of their works, whether collaborative or individual, are to be looked forward to. One of the main themes that started in this novel and has continued to today in novels written by Greg Cox, is his penchant for using characters and species from all of the series, but most especially the Original Series, such as his use of the Hortas in this novel, which according to his interview with Kevin Dilmore was John Ordover's idea.

"Devil in the Sky" also lends itself very well to the early feel of the series. This is the type of story you "could've" seen on the series, except for the prohibitive costs of using the Horta via a heavy amount of CGI.

The cover art for "Devil in the Sky" isn't all that imaginative other than the drawing of a Horta, giving a potential reader that this creature from the Original Series is included in the story.

                    The premise:

Bajor has recruited the Hortas from Janus VI to help rebuild their devastated mining industry all in the hopes of revitalizing their struggling economy. Unfortunately for the Hortas and the Bajorans, Cardassian raiders step in and abduct the Mother Horta. Now Commander Sisko finds himself stuck with twenty Horta eggs and they suddenly begin to hatch and the only food source for them appears to be Deep Space Nine itself. Meanwhile, Major Kira sets out on a rescue mission, deep in Cardassian space.

                    I highly recommend this novel to any and all fans of the series or Star Trek in general. If you've never read a novel written by one or both of these authors, you will soon learn that they can definitely be counted among some of the best that Star Trek has to offer. {ssintrepid}

                    3 out of 5 stars Passable.......2003-03-14

Another passable book as the written series was trying to find its feet. The Hortas explored in the first Star Trek series are brought back here. The logic of bringing creatures on board a space station who can bore through anything is questionable and again its the Cardassians who are throwing a wrench into the plans.
It took awhile for the written series to find it's own feet, amazingly enough when the series went off of TV and was dependent upon the written series as the sole outlet.

4 out of 5 stars ST: DS-9 Devil in the Sky.......2003-02-16

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Devil in the Sky written by Greg Cox and John Gregory Betancourt is a true to character novel about one of the universe's best miners... The Horta from Janus VI.

This is a two-plotted book with a fast paced theme within the major plot. The Horta were recruited to help rebuild Bajor's devastated mining industry after the Cardassian occupation. The planet's struggling economy needs a boost with the exportation of minerals and the Horta are the best miners in the galaxy. So, Mother Horta with twenty Horta eggs are on Deep Space Nine ready to mine away the rock.

But, this wouldn't be TREK without a hitch in the gitty-up... that is the Carassian kidnapp Mother Horta and her eggs are beginning to hatch on Deep Space Nine without their moter. Hortas can go through solid rock like us walking through water.

Kira/bashir are on a rescue mission to retrive Mother Horta (the first plot). Commander Benjamin Sisko is on Deep Space Nine with the twenty hatching,(the second plot). Horta hatchlings can be very uncontrollable without guidence from the mother.

I enjoyed this fast paced book and the characters of Benjamin Sisko, Jake, Rom, Kira, Bashir, Odo, and O'Brian were all very true to their respective characters. The storylines were woven with just enough of the story to keep you interested to the ending.

All in all, this was a well-written action-adventure with interesting characterizations.

4 out of 5 stars A quick read, but gobs of fun and adventure........2001-08-10

I don't know about you, but I'm having a big ol' ball going back and reading some of these earlier Trek novels (See "The Murdered Sun").

Greg Cox and John Gregory Betancourt penned a wonderful, two-plot early adventure that ties in canon information about the Hortas with newer information about the Cardassians. This novel just sizzled with all that lovely hatred the Bajorans had for their (former) oppressors.

This one's also chock full of early Bashir attitude, before we learned about his enhanced genetics and certainly *well* before he got over himself about being a ladies man. Quite entertaining, I say, and darned amusing, too. In fact, this story abounds with perfect early characterizations of all of them - Kira, Dax, Odo, Quark, the O'Briens, Sisko, Nog, Jake, and Rom, and was a pure delight to read, this long after the series ended.

But don't worry about the Cardies or the Hortas - Our Man Bashir comes through in the end. Wait a minute, what am I saying? *Everybody* comes through in the end - of COURSE they do, this is Star Trek! And there's nothing wrong with that.

A-plot concentrates on a daring Kira/Bashir/Dax rescue of a mama Horta from the Cardies, and when you stir in the almost-goofy b-plot about 20 accidentally-hatched baby Hortas on DS9 (mmm...who managed that, don't ya wonder?), you've got a what amounts to a mighty grand escapade in the finest of Star Trek tradition.

5 out of 5 stars The Inquistors Holiday.......2003-03-17

If you haven't read previous books in this series, you may miss the emotional build up that this entry will surely give those who have been with the pleasantly strange and heroic torturer, Andrej. He's on leave at last, going home to see his wife and meet a son for the first time, who is now eight years old. But bad things happen just before his holiday begins. He has to switch security teams in order to protect his bonds (slave like prisoners assigned to serve him) from an investigation following an explosion. And then there's that nasty woman who wants him dead. AND the papers that a government agent brings telling him he can walk out of the military and stay home. Of course nothing is EVER quite so simple in Judicary. New readers may find the intricate political, and military intrigue afoot confusing and to enter here without the history of Andrej and other characters softens the impact of what happens here.
My advice is buy this book and hold onto it. Read "An exchange of hostages,' 'Prisoner of Conscience' and 'Hour of Judgment.' Koscuisko will be a man you will not soon forget. Ms. Matthews has invented a dynamic universe with love and violence, pleasure and pain vivid enough to touch your heart or trouble your mind. I truly loved it and can't wait to see what's next.

4 out of 5 stars Another layer of the onion.......2003-02-08

"The Devil in Deep Space" is the fifth in in Susan R. Matthews' "judiciary" series ("Prisoner of Conscience," "An Exchange of Hostages," "Hour of Judgment," "Angel of Destruction"), and maybe it's the strongest, most complicated yet. Those who've read the previous books will probably be delighted by this one. As always Matthews' descriptive prose pulls you right in. You can almost taste the bad rations and the cramped quarters aboard a spaceship in need of supplies.

You'll reencounter characters from before and meet a few new ones as well (among them Andrej's wife), but newcomers to the series would be advised to read them in the order they're written. Matthews doesn't bother to back up much, which helps keep the book to reasonable length.

This time out Inquisitor Andrej Koscuisko gets a chance to go home to his family, and hopes to leave his position as Inquisitor. In his assignment as ship's surgeon aboard the space ship Ragnarok, he's also required to torture suspects, but now at last he's offered a way out.

Things of course go wrong almost immediately and we see in a series of cynical (and psychological) portraits how nearly every facet of Matthews' universe involves corruption. (It's so widespread the corrupt are described as "reasonable people.")

Things proceed eerily but stately, impressionistically. Nothing is quite what it seems; nothing is fully revealed. There are ancient hostilities between cultures not fully explained, or perhaps not yet. Clearly there are more novels to come in the series, and if the existing five are a guide, in each one another layer of Matthews' onion-verse will be pulled back.

                    Great concept, great execution.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, intelligent, and moving science fiction.......2003-01-29

The Devil and Deep Space is a complicated, emotionally charged science fiction novel, which instead of using overwrought morality tales, gets down to the heart of whether or not any of us is a good person deep down inside. This is a story of redemption and making up for past sins, in addition to continuing the evolution of the Jurisdiction political situation. Those looking for bugs to zap will be disappointed, but those who appreciate complex character development and classic adventure will enjoy Matthews' many plot twists and romantic (or Romantic!) spirit.

The homeworld of the prodigal Andrej Koscuisko is a realm with which people in our frequently self-indulgent times are hard-pressed to understand - a world where the wealthy are benevolent overseers who are responsible for those under their protection. Koscuisko has always been conflicted over his duties at home and his duties in Fleet, finding them completely at odds with each other and driving him further and further over the edge of sanity. Is it any surprise that eventually, something's got to give? Responsibility and love are what drive Koscuisko to take surprising, radical actions in this book, to the point where nothing under Jurisdiction - or in the life of the Ragnarok crew - will ever be the same again.

That said, the primary reason that I enjoyed this novel so much is how much fun I had reading it! Matthews' eye for detail is impeccable, from yes, the materials of clothing (critical information in a society whose livelihood and religion are based on textiles) to the digestive issues of sentient bat-like creatures, to the warm rekindling of dormant relationships. Characters that we've never before encountered are brought brilliantly to life, and we feel as though we're beside them as they struggle through difficult decisions that will alter the fabric of their reality forever. The author also has an appealingly dark sense of humor that meshes with the profound challenges her characters face. The plot twists and turns enough to keep you reading into the wee hours of the morning, right down to the last few pages. When it's over, you realize that Matthews has subtly led you to the edge of a revolution.

If you're a fan of the series, the book brings you a fuller understanding of Koscuisko's struggle and what he has had to sacrifice for his duty thus far - and what he will be giving up in the future, as the further destabilization of life under Jurisdiction continues. If you've never read any of the other books, then this might be a good opportunity to get to know Koscuisko the man before getting to know his demons, although some of the story's more shocking plot twists will not have quite the same impact for you. Even so, this book is complex, and thought-provoking, and I was eagerly awaiting the next installment from the moment I read the final sentence.

1 out of 5 stars Tiresome fantasy scifi.......2003-01-26

I like good techno-real science fiction or at least a good space opera, fantasy scifi is not what I like to read. Unfortunately this novel goes off into drivel about princes and princlings wearing red and gold outfits and even has people riding horses and harvesting crops.
This latest in the Andrej Koscuisko series from Ms. Matthews is the weakest of the series. Previous novels in the series were at times gruesome but also exciting and well written. The writing in this one is difficult to read requiring that I read a paragraph over a time or two to get it. The sentence structure is awkward and not always just to try to convey the strange world and language of the planet where the story is set.
This novel does not stand alone. One must have read the previous novels in the series to enjoy this one and one must have read them recently enough to remember all about Dormitt Prison, and why what's-her-name hates Andrej so much or much of the story in this novel makes little sense.

4 out of 5 stars Devil and Deep Space.......2002-11-20

A party observing a training exercise of Ragnarok crew is accidentally killed in a way that threatens to expose high-up corruption. Meanwhile, Andrej is hoping to finally go home. . .

As with Matthews' other works, this is a complex work of science fiction, incorporating tangled politics with dramatic personal interaction. Here and there I thought I saw a hole in the plot (could Noycannir really be *that* dumb?), and some of the situations didn't get exploited for all of their dramatic potential, I thought. Still, I found this to be a strong novel and I enjoyed it. It is less grim than some of the earlier books, livened with the occasional touch of humor, but the edge is still there.

5 out of 5 stars Best SCD cookbook I've used so far.......2007-08-12

I have this cookbook as well as Breaking the Vicious Cycle, Lucy's SCD Cookbook, and Eat Well Feel Well. This one is my favorite. I love "The World's Best Meat Sauce", which I make thick as recommended for a sloppy joe spooned over the "Basic Bread" recipe. Fantastic! The apple galette disappeared immediately among a group of non-SCD dieters. I also like the cole slaw, and the cappuccino ice cream is fabulous!

I also have Eat Well Feel Well, but find the recipes are expensive and require ingredients not typical even in the SCD kitchen. Since the SCD can be expensive on its own, I have found that I've used that book very rarely. With the exception of nut flours and standard SCD staples, most ingredients used in Grain Free Gourment are reasonably priced and easily located in your neighborhood supermarket. The recipes even include the standard rather than SCD ingredients, so this book will remain a favorite even if strict adherence to SCD is no longer necessary. Thank you Jodi and Jenny for quality recipes that are easy to follow, kitchen tested, and sure to please even non-SCDers. This is a lovely cookbook with beautiful photos. It would be a welcome addition in every SCD kitchen.

This is my FAVORITE cookbook and I refer to it time and time again for muffins and other treats that would normally be grain-based. My whole family is gluten free, and I have to be fully grain free. I can't say enough about the book. My favorite is the carrot muffins - YUM! And, if you can't do eggs they work just fine with egg replacer (but add ground flax seed as well to further help them stick together.) Great book!!!!!!!!!

I've made several of the muffins in this book, and they're all pretty good. I plan to make a lot more of them. The grain-free baked goods use lots of almonds, other nuts, and eggs. One problem is that the author/editor included no nutritional info. with the recipes. If you're counting calories, fat grams, fiber or carbs, you're on your own. It would be great if they would correct that on a revised edition.
