A pregnant young girl is kidnapped by a wacko couple, members of the religious right who call each other Mommy and Daddy. They keep her chained in a room in the basement watching anti abortion tapes. They put an iron mask over her head. They murder her friend. In the end she escapes and the huge political conspiracy involved in "kidnapping pregnant girls and holding them captive til they give birth and then keeping the babies and murdering the mothers" is exposed. This book was annoying.

Super Reader.......2007-08-02

This L. Sprague De Camp edited book is basically The Hour of the Dragon, with an intro, and a shot at putting together a map based on the work of a few people :-

The novel length Conan work. An aging Conan is now in a position of responsibility, being King of Aquilonia.

His reign is threatened by a very powerful sorcerer, whom Conan is unable to stop by mundane means, and must take himself off hunting for a mystic artifact.

Having done this, there is some wizard smiting to be done.

Top notch work.

The one that got me hooked on REH.......2003-08-21

When I was ten years old I stumbled across the Lancer edition of this book,their edition of Howard's "The Hour of the Dragon," which actually ran as a serial in "Weird Tales" in the 1930s (none of REH's work was actually published as a novel during his lifetime, with the possible exception of "Almuric," which I can't remember for certain but it may have been). At that age I probably had no business reading it, but I made my first purchase ever of a book when I bought it. Amazingly, even though that was over thirty-five years ago, I still own the book.

The book is fast-paced, action packed, and carries the eerie atmopshere that so many Howard stories do (what is it about authors who shoot themselves that seems to tie them so closely to great story-telling?). Conna faces insurmountable odds in losing his kingdom, and naturally, he eventually overcomes them. The fun of the tale is in following his adventures as he travels the world to find the means to defeat his enemies.

Obviously, Howard isn't everyone's cup of tea. There is an air of fatality and finality looming over all of his best works, including this one. Despite Conan's ultimate victory, you almost sense that Howard knew, and by extension Conan knew, that all victories are short lived and would soon pass.

Regardless, if you have an interest in sword and sorcery, this is must reading and probably a good starting point for people new to the genre. Howard is essentially the father of the genre and is still the best in that area in my opinion.

Just looking at a lot of the deriviative junk that has grown around the whole Conan mythos, you really have to wish that Howard had lived longer and continued to write more about Conan, although at the time of his death, Howard was moving away from the genre to what he considered better paying markets.

I give it five stars because it is in many ways the peak of Howard's writing. And thirty-five years later, I still occassionally pick it up and re-read it, which may say a lot about how well-written it is, since I long ago left fantasy reading behind me.

Conan unseated from his throne.......2002-01-26

A prosperous Aquilonia flourishes under Conan's firm rule, but Conan is deposed by an evil plot that originates with his neighbors in Nemedia. Black arts are engaged to defeat the great barbarian, but Conan makes a journey to find a way to save Aquilonia from usurpation.

L. Sprague de Camp does an admirable job as editor. The Conan books are not precisely my cuppa tea, but are an essential read for people interested in the history of the fantasy genre.

Four tales of Conan as Raider, Thief, Pirate and Mercenary.......2001-05-12

The four tales in "Conan the Conqueror" cover most of the main aspects of the career of Robert E. Howard's character: raider, thief, pirate, and mercenary. (1) "Black Tears" by L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter is one of several pastiches written by the duo based upon hints in Howard's note and letters to fill up gaps in the saga. It takes place after the classic story "A Witch Shall Be Born" (in "Conan the Freebooter") as Conan leads his band of Zuagirs eastward to raid the cities and caravans of the Turanians. King Yezdigerd reacts by sending out a strong force to entrap Conan. (2) Shadows in Zamboula" by Robert E. Howard has Conan destitute after a week of guzzling, gorging, roistering, whoring and gambling. This is an above average Conan the Thief story. (3) "The Devil in Iron" by Howard has Conan returning the seas as a pirate, putting together a crew from among his old friends the kozaki and the Red Fellowship of Vilayet Sea. Conan and his crew stumbled upon an inhuman creature and mayhem ensues. (4) The longest story in this collection, "The Flame Knife" was one of four uncompleted manuscripts by Howard completed by de Camp. This novella was originally an adventure in modern Afghanistan entitled "Three-Bladed Doom" staring Francis X. Gordon, Howard's brawny, brawling Irish adventurer. De Camp transformed the story into a Conan tale. After King Yezdigerd crushes the Kozak host, Conan retreats southward with a sizeable band and joins the army of Kobad Shah, king of Iranistan and one of Yezdigred's strongest rivals. These stories are rather standard fare, evidencing in part the problems de Camp and Carter had in filling all the gaps in the Conan saga. Certainly these are stories you would read out of a sense of completeness rather than because there are any real gems to be found within.

An Enduring Champion in an Epic Chronicle.......2000-06-30

When Lancer Books started reissuing the Conan saga back in the mid-60's, they enlisted L. Sprage DeCamp and Lin Carter to spruce up Howard's grammar and soften some of the more "politically incorrect" views he voiced. They chose well. Although 9th in the series, "Conan the Conqueror" was the first book issued because of copyright problems. It was a good start. I read the book and was hooked. I haunted the bookstores waiting for each new Conan book to come out. Later I had the opportunity to read "Hour of the Dragon," Howard's book as originally written. Not quite as polished as "Conan the Conqueror," but entertaining nonetheless. Anyone who enjoyed the movie "Conan the Barbarian" should like "Conan the Conqueror."

Sound like an oxymoron? Myra Kornfeld argues that choosing to be a vegan does not mean you have to deprive yourself--rather, you can pamper your palate with luscious, healthy food. There are those who advocate salt-free, fat-free, flavor-free food, but Kornfeld sets the record straight right from the beginning. She uses salt for seasoning, and reminds us, thank goodness, that you need fat in a healthy diet. Clear instructions, a chapter on ingredients (including sections on grains, greens, and beans--how to buy them, cook them, and use them), and a short primer on equipment make this a good book for beginners. More accomplished cooks will appreciate Kornfeld's innovation. She isn't afraid to use herbs and spices, and she knows the capabilities of her ingredients. In a simple Rich Stock recipe, for instance, she calls for celery root, and explains in a note that you can substitute celery, but that the root gives a much deeper flavor. Kornfeld's food is voluptuous in presentation, too: Smoky Chestnut and Sweet Potato Soup calls for a dash of rum, and it's served with toasted, chopped hazelnuts and a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg; Hominy, Tomatillo, and Squash Stew is topped with Ginger and Lime Cream made from tofu; and a Fennel, Orange, and Pomegranate Salad is so beautiful and the flavor so complex, you'll swear you're eating four-star cuisine.

The book is a little difficult to navigate, as it's divided into "meals." So if all you're looking for is a side dish, you'll need to set some time aside to peruse the whole book. Every recipe starts with a few words of wisdom, usually information on the ingredients or a description of the final product. The final chapter is on desserts, and here Kornfeld really gets voluptuous. The recipes include Cranberry Orange Tart, Chocolate Pudding Tart, and Lemon Pudding Cake with Blueberry Glaze--there's no depriving anyone of anything here! Vegans will appreciate the creative and inventive approach, but this cookbook is also useful for nonvegans. Everyone knows someone who's trying to avoid meat, dairy, or eggs, and with loads of ideas for light meals and interesting side dishes, we can entertain our friends and eat healthy at the same time. --Leora Y. not what i hoped for.......2007-07-10

As other reviewers have said, the recipes are time consuming. I have tried the adzuki bean recipe, and it was much less tasty than I had expected. Other recipes in this book are not even worth trying because the ingredients are either seasonal or just plain unavailable in my rural area. There are better, more down-to-earth vegan cookbooks out there.

Of my many, many cookbooks, The Voluptuous Vegan, by Myra Kornfeld, is my favorite. In fact, when I was asked to go to Bulgaria in 2004 to help open the first health-food restaurant in that region, The Voluptuous Vegan was one of the few cookbooks to accompany us on that journey. I have made nearly every recipe in this book. I love the innovative flavor and texture combinations. I also greatly appreciate the way Myra Kornfeld lays out menus, recipes, and preparation timelines to help you assemble, in a timely manner, complete meals that will wow both family and guests. As a personal chef and cooking instructor who promotes organic, health-supportive cooking, I have made recipes from this book that even my most vegetable-phobic clients ask for repeatedly, the African groundnut stew topping that list. As for the desserts, people can't seem to get enough of the chocolate pudding tart (which kids clamor for, even after they've watched me make it using tofu as the base!), the chocolate sorbet, and the carrot cake, the secret ingredient for which (oddly enough) is cardamom. Before completing this review, I do want to comment on one of the above reviews which indicates that seitan is a soy product. Seitan is actually a protein source derived from wheat and is sometimes referred to as "wheat meat." In closing, I will simply say that, if I were allowed to keep only one cookbook from my entire library of sources, it would be The Voluptuous Vegan. Thanks, Myra!

Okay, I know it's early but..........2006-11-29

I just purchased this cookbook after mulling over the reviews, and I just tried my first recipe, Warm Chickpea Salad with Artichokes and Sun-dried tomatoes. Mmmmmmm! I thought the minced rosemary used in the dressing might give this salad an overwhelming flavor, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was subtle, and wonderful, and full of flavor! Maybe I shouldn't write a review based upon my first go at it, but I have a gut feeling that I'm going to love this book! The fact that the author is a chef, and reading the other reviews, gives me faith and trust. I am an occasional vegan, and have been wanting to learn how to cook bolder, more flavorful vegan dishes. I have given in to the fact that good cooking requires time and commitment, so the effort that is needed does not turn me off. For me, the taste and the health benefits will make it totally worth the effort. I can't wait to try more recipes!!

Great for Special Occasions!.......2006-11-27

I enjoy Myra Kornfeld's recipes from her Vegan column in Vegetarian Times magazine, so I was happy to see she was the author of a cookbook! While I do not use this book every day (my more everyday cookbooks are The Chicago Diner Cookbook and Vegan with a Vengance) I love to leaf through here for ideas when I find myself in a rut. Everything is laid out in meal plans from entree to dessert, and there is a section in the beginning explaining cooking techniques that often get glossed out in other books (where they assume you know it already). This book is also great for special occasions - many nonveg*ns seem to think all we eat is lettuce...or maybe stirfry! You can dazzle them with these recipes. Again, very thought provoking - even if I do not make a recipe verbatim, it definitely gets the creative cooking juices flowing. Both a cookbok and a reference book!

Gourmet Vegan Food to Please Everyone.......2005-10-27

This book is a gem in a world full of bad vegan cookbooks. I am not into health food, I am a vegan for strictly animal rights reasons, but whatever I eat better taste really good (and is typically very healthy by default). Voluptuous Vegan has some truly fantastic recipes. Some of the recipes are rather involved but don't let that intimidate you because it is virtually guaranteed to be worth it. The great thing about the book is you can just look at the recipes and see that they are going to work. Any vegan cook worth their salt ought to have this book in their collection.
