For indeed he has other things on his mind -- particularly a frightening request (involving a parachute jump) made by Mma Potokwani, the persuasive matron of the orphan farm.
Mma Ramotswe herself has weighty matters on her mind. She has been approached by a wealthy lady to check up on several suitors. Are these men interested in her or just her money? This may be difficult to find out, but it’s just the kind of case Mma Ramotswe likes and she is, as we know, a very intuitive lady.
Meanwhile, Mma Makutsi -- plucky assistant detective and deputy manager of the Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors garage -- is moving. Her entrepreneurial venture, the Kalahari Typing School for Men, is thriving and with this new income she has rented two rooms in a house. Customer Reviews:
a pleasant journey with those who have now become old friends.......2007-08-26
When I read the previous book in the series (The Kalahari Typing School for Men), it was clearly the least mysterious of the books in this series to that point: it had the fewest detective cases, instead moving forward the personal lives of the major characters (especially Mma Kutsi). With this, the fifth installment, Smith lowers the mystery quotient even further. The book contains only one detective case (albeit a fun one: find out which of a rich woman's suitors will make the best husband!) and spends relatively little time even on it.
This time, the focus returns to Mma Ramotswe's and Mr JLB Matekoni's personal lives. Despite the lack of mystery, the book is a pleasant escape into one of Africa's best-governed and wealthiest countries, with characters you can enjoy and respect. And the book has a fine ending!
I made the mistake of reading this installment just a couple of months after the last one: it's better to leave a more time between books in this series, else Mma Ramotswe's musing on the marvels of Botswana (especially the OLD Botswana) can start to feel tired. But given a little rest, this is a relaxing ride back to Jaborone. I'll read the next book, just not right away.
If you're new to the series, don't start here: go back to The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. This isn't Agatha Christie: the detective's history actually matters here. And I always listen to the audiobook version (published by Recorded Books), narrated by Lisette Lecat. She is a pleasure to listen to.
Another lovely story.......2007-08-10
I think the thing I like most about this series (other than the consistently good writing) is that there is no straining to put the detectives in dangerous situations, no effort to up the body count or indeed to have a body count in each book. This detective does the things that most detectives do--evaluates character, looks for lost things and most importantly lives her life. It's the views into her life that keep me coming back. I had wondered how long the engagement would go on before Precious Ramotswe would ask when she would cease to be an engaged lady and become a wife. That's one of the focuses of this book and I'm not going to tell you what happens. I'm looking forward to reading the sixth book.
Getting a bit slow, but still fun.........2007-03-20
This is the fifth No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency novel, and by now author Smith has gotten the formula down pat. He has a series of things which never seem to change from book to book: the main character, Precious Ramotswe, and her sidekick Mma Makutsi. Mma and Rra are apparently Mrs. and Mr. in Botswana. The author adopts the conceit that there's no need for him to explain things like this to you; you should already know. This is similar to the late Patrick O'Brian, who never explained any of the terms, nautical or just obsolete, that he used in his Aubrey/Maturin novels. Usually, in each of these books, there's a problem, perhaps two or three, and the author follows the characters around as they deal with them.
In the current story, as much as there's a detective story here it's that Mma Ramotswe has been hired to investigate a series of suitors for the hand of a local, wealthy businesswoman. In a separate story-thread, there's the question of whether Mma Ramotswe's fiance, Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni (he's always referred to that way) should jump out of an airplane with parachute attached for the purpose of raising money for the local orphanage, where he does chores for the woman who runs the place, fixing machinery and so forth. And lastly there's the question of the impending marriage between Mma Ramotswe and Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, and when that will occur (if ever).
Smith is rather practiced at this now, and this is a worthwhile entry in the series. It's not the most exciting book in the series, and the series isn't the most exciting one in the book world by any stretch of the imagination, but the books are fun, including this one.
gentle and Clever, a book of mysteries, but not as you would expect.......2007-03-02
Precious Ramotswe and her number one Ladies Detective Agency are back in this wonderful observation on life. As one would expect of a Ladies Detective Agency, much of the mystery to be discovered is gentle, who is the apprentice in J L B Matekoni's Tlokweng Rd Speedy Motors seeing? A Rich married lady it seems, but what is happening at Mr J L B Matekoni's old house, and why is her car going there? Who has broken into Mma Ramotswe's home, and where did the large pumpkin come from. Just what happened to Mma Ramotswe's wonderful van, and why is there someone from her life come back again, and what does he want.
This is lovely observation of life, and on lives well-lived. Some of the mysteries in this book are suble, and the outcomes equally so. It is never tacitly explained who broke into Mma Ramotswe's home, but it is fairly clear by the end if you read between the lines. There is also a very philosophical bent to these novels which is touched on at the beginning when Mma Ramotswe sees a burglary in progress. Sometimes things aren't as they seem, and while the thief gets away, she herself stands accused - this situation happens later in the novel, and Precious is able to transfer that feeling to the accused and assist him. Good deeds bring good things, generally.
The thing I love most about these books is the gentle way things are resolved. Sometimes through doing almost nothing things become clear. There are no gun fights, no car chases (as such anyway) and generally no horrible suspense, yet there are mysteries to be sloved, and issues to be resolve, and they are done in the traditaionl African way.
Lovely gentle humour - a really fun and satisfaying read. I would highly recommned this series!
delightful read for a summer day.......2007-02-24
I don't read much fiction -- and mysteries, not at all-- so I had ignored earlier volumes in this series about Lady Detective Mme Ramotswe. Then I found "The Full Cupboard of Life" on a half-price sale & decided, since it was set in Africa, to give the author a try.
I'm so glad I did! What a delightful read for a hot summer day under a tree in the back yard. It also brought back happy memories of my travels in Africa. Since the focus is more on character & setting than on plot or mystery, it was especially enjoyable to me.
Now that I have made the acquaintance of Mme Ramotswe so late in the game, I am determined to get her life story straight by getting all the other books in the series and reading them in the correct order.
So much one hears of Africa is doom and gloom, hopelessness, poverty & war; it is a nice change to read about its people having what we westerners would consider a normal life.

But she is not sufficiently aware that her many suitors are not only after her money. Mma. Ramotswe, due to her observation skills and being talkative and a skilled observer, is the ideal person to help her dissipate her doubts. Allí nos espera, preparando el té, uno de los personajes más encantadores e interesantes de la literatura actual.

Characters, not plot, govern the action here........2005-09-22
In his fifth novel about the #1 Ladies Detective Agency, run by Mma Precious Ramotswe, author Alexander McCall Smith presents the full cupboard of Botswana life in all its richness. For Mma Ramotswe, people and their relationships are paramount, and she believes that these relationships are facilitated by Botswana's traditional code of behavior, with its customs of greetings, sitting down together, drinking bush tea, and casually talking around a subject, rather than addressing it aggressively.
Life is a rich, full, and happy experience for Mma Ramotswe, who can find out everything she wants to know from her broad network of family and friends. Engaged to the good-hearted Mr. J.L.B. Matakone, who has not yet set a date for a wedding, she helps him surreptitiously with his problems and cooks and cares for the two orphans he has taken into his home.
In this novel, full of gentle humor and wisdom, Mma Ramotswe and her friends face several "difficult" problems: A woman who has made a fortune establishing hair-braiding salons hires Mma Ramotswe to find out whether her suitors want to marry her for her money. Mr. J.L.B. Matakone finds himself tricked into "volunteering" to do a parachute jump. He is also disturbed to discover that First Class Motors, a rival garage, has sold improper parts and failed to service a classic old Range Rover correctly, and he has been procrastinating about reporting him to authorities.
With an obvious lack of exciting plot lines, the reader focuses completely on the characters-- beautifully drawn, sometimes flawed, and always forgiven their faults. In a pace as leisurely as life in Botswana, McCall Smith recreates the colorful everyday lives of these ordinary people, who treasure friendships, treat each other with respect, and possess inherent good sense. Honoring the values that contemporary readers sometimes do not take the time to preserve, McCall Smith portrays complex social relationships in very simple and direct prose. Warm, gently humorous, and loving, McCall Smith creates a vicarious nostalgia for this way of life. Mary Whipple

Saddened by a fading Julian May.......2006-09-30
For years, Julian May was my favorite author. Her Pliocene Exile tetralogy remains the pinnacle of epic fiction in my mind. I enjoyed the Galactic Milieu tetralogy as well, and attributed some of my small disappointment to the sheer scope of the tale. Finally, the Rampart Worlds was entertaining, tongue-in-cheek with fleeting moments of the type of musical prose that had enraptured me with her writing years before. But now... now I must admit that I think Ms. May is fading from her peak.
While Conqueror's Moon was a solid work from the genre perspective, she fell far short of my lofty expectations. She's a good writer, that much is certain. Better by far than Jordan or Goodkind or Newcombe... and there is always the possibility that her editors have hacked and slashed some of her narrative. But her "decline" is not dis-similar to that of Terry Brooks'. "The Sword of Shannara" was fine, lively, colorful writing. Subsequent books, while perhaps more intriguing from a conceptual and storytelling standpoint, lost the magical descriptions and mood-setting narrative of his first work. He succumbed, IMO, to the commercial muse.
May's latest work is not that corrupt. The world is interesting, original. The magic is fresh and new (for the genre-- although I can't help thinking it is the watered-down "fantasy" version of the space opera metapsychics from her Pliocene and Milieu series). But the storyline is fairly ordinary otherwise, and her characters (usually one of her great strengths) are quite uninteresting, almost cardboard thin. There is little evolution in them, little growth in this first book... They just are, and static, and not that interesting.
Moreover, the music is seemingly gone. In her "Pliocene Companion" May was interviewed as saying that she heard music in her head when she wrote-- different pieces that helped her feel the mood of the scene in the book she was writing at the time. I could tell what she meant when I read it. Her words were Joycean-- they reached out and stimulated all five senses in harmonious rapture. Not so, anymore. For the genre, her prose remains above-average, but without an enthralling storyline, this book is just OK.
It's good enough to finish. I'm steadily making my way through the second book, "Ironcrown Moon" as we speak. I've been on a fantasy binge of late-- seven other books, most of which I'll not review. I lament that the Julian May of old has not been rekindled thus far here.
If you were looking for a synopsis in this review, I apologize. To me, this book was more about the author than the story. I guess that really says it all about this book.
To the "yawning" critics, I say go piffle yerself!.......2005-09-18
Egad,
If I could only get one good cudgel swing at every critic out there w/ little to no support for their worthless opines...
Folks, May is the "real deal": Her plotting is tight, her characters are fun (and flawed), and her dialog is very good (and often funny!) As others have mentioned, the magic "system" in this book is one of the best, period. Finally -- and so FEW of her contemporaries seem to be able to do this -- this is not another trite GoooD vs EeevilL tome. That's right, May is capable of creating sympathetic characters on both (even many!) sides of a conflict. This was one of the many virtues of her Many Colored Land series -- one of the most underrated sci-fi/fantasy series of all time.
I take away one star from this tale because the main character does come off a little contrived (particularly in the beginning), and quite frankly, I couldn't stand his name. Other than that, bloody good fun. I wish I could write one-tenth as well.
Entertaining and Well Written.......2005-08-21
Conqueror's Moon is a thoroughly entertaining work set in a fascinating world, and I recommend it highly. The lands of High Blenholme are well realized and the characters that inhabit it, particularly the young lead, Snudge, are entertaining and fun. After the bloated, repetitive nonsense currently clogging up the fantasy genre (Martin, Erikson, Jordan et al.), this was a refreshing change.
May should go back to the Pliocene!.......2004-08-24
This novel had a fascinating world and an intriguing system of magic and sorcery.
But the story itself was weak, and the characters uninteresting.
I've read and loved everything else May has written, but this series just stinks to high heaven.
Yawn........2004-03-28
Boring, contrived, simple and uninteresting. I could not wait for this book to end and won't be purchasing the sequal.
To my chagrin, yet another orphan boy with great powers tale. Yawn. The entire book had exactly zero characters that I enjoyed. In fact, I was hoping that they would all die at the end and May would reboot the entire series. Maybe that would have caused me to think about picking up book 2.
Folks below wrote that this book was well written, and that May is a "world builder". I didn't see any of it. World building is Erikson and Martin. Read those.

Customer Reviews:
Engaging and Encouraging.......2005-11-23
The night I read the first chapter, I couldn't sleep. I lay haunted by the sadness of three little girls enduring the death of their mother.
In The Light That Never Dies, William Hendricks guides his reader from the heart-wrenching sorrow of his 47-year-old wife Nancy's lost fight with cancer to his assurance that she is alive with Christ today. Although he professes to write not just for Christians, but "for anyone who knows grief, loss, pain, or suffering," (p. 21) his story is pervaded by the presence of a loving God. It is also pervaded by the presence of those little girls, Amy, Kristin, and Brittany, and their Daddy. How often I looked back at the photo of the family complete with its mother.
The first of the book's two dominant images comes from Margaret Wise Brown's children's classic, The Runaway Bunny. Brown's mother bunny vows to pursue her little one every time he runs away. "The little bunny knows that he will always be the object of his mother's affection" (p. 26). This motif entwines the human theme around the theological treatise. God, the ultimate Mother Bunny, manifests the same loyal love. The author himself displays it, assuring eight-year-old Amy that, "Even though Mommy's gone, Daddy's here, and I'm not going anywhere" (p. 83).
The Light That Never Dies, however, reaches beyond bunnies and their mothers, apt as that image may be. Neither is it only a memoir of God sustaining a family through intense pain, though He clearly does.
Revealing his Dallas Seminary theological training and didactic writing experience, Hendricks uses a second image, from Ecclesiastes 7:2. "It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting." But where was God in the Holocaust, Columbine, and 9-11? In the Challenger explosion and sniper deaths? In personal loss? Why is it better to go to the House of Mourning? From Ecclesiastes come biblical precepts for suffering. Life is brief. Death is not final. God comforts.
A book that might have become unbearably tragic instead brings hope from one who grieves with understanding. Heartwarming moments intersperse with excruciating times to provide stamina to persevere. As serious lessons creep from the story, so a husband's love glimmers in the little mentions, such as Nancy's favorite Earl Grey tea. And in his visual depictions of their special times. "Our surroundings gradually took form as the light intensified, like a Polaroid slowly developing" (p. 29).
With tenderness and candor, Hendricks evaluates his journey from the news of Nancy's diagnosis, through her sickness and death, to his own mourning and recovery. He admits his feelings. "Suffering is an a cappella solo" (p. 13). He declares theological truth. "Evil is real" (p. 39). He offers practical advice for those who console. "Loving care is best expressed in emotions and actions, not theology or philosophy" (p. 136). And he proclaims for our comfort that God is "utterly trustworthy" (p. 132). "His lovingkindness is everlasting" (p.131).
Whether you ache now or seek to understand pain before your own turn comes, I commend to you The Light That Never Dies. The emotions are authentic. The lessons are thought provoking. And the conclusion of the book, an account of 15-year-old Brittany's expression of love, again threatened my sleep.
We matter to God--alot! .......2005-06-15
Anyone who will read this book will not just vividly walk with Bill through his "house of mourning," but their own. And, with your own tears and smiles and laughs and questions and a whole lot more, you will come out singing that we matter alot--to God!
Translate the experience of this book into your thoughts and prayers of others you know who are in thier own "house of mourning," and you will be better equipped to "be there" for them.
Read this book slowly! Process it! And share it!
Dr. John R. Hellstern
A wonderful inspiring book.......2005-05-02
Everyone should read this book. Those currently grieving will find comfort and hope. Those that have been there will find words that describe all they have gone through. Many will find helpful insights into thier experience. Those who have not yet grieved over a loved one, will be better prepared for that day.
Bill Hendricks puts into words an experience that is difficult to describe. I felt like I was there with him. He does not pull any punches about the pain, doubts or hard questions. He has been there, but through it all there is hope. The Light never dies, and we can all take comfort in that thought.
A Light in the Darkness.......2005-03-26
Bill Hendricks has written a book about death and dying that is full of hope. Perhaps the last taboo in our culture, right up there with discussing our income, death is a subject we prefer to ignore for as long as possible until, as in Bill's case, it comes knocking on our door.
With honesty, insight and practical encouragement Bill walks his readers along the shadowy pathways that lead to "The House of Mourning" and beyond.
At once touching, comforting and unsentimental, The Light That Never Dies will encourage many who are grieving with a message of hope in the midst of sadness and loss.
I highly recommend this book. Get it for a friend or loved one struggling with loss. Get it for yourself and be reminded that God can and will bring light out of darkness.
A story of hope..........2005-03-08
I just finished reading this book, and found it initially very sad, and yet ultimately very encouraging. I think everyone sooner or later will face a loss of someone they love terribly, either by sickness or accident or even old age if they are lucky. What do we do with our pain? Even if you have a strong faith, you will feel the pain of that loss. Why does God allow this suffering? We all ask that question no matter our age. Bill Hendricks very eloquently describes his and his girls' journeys through his wife Nancy's illness, and how he and they came to feel God's love for them even in the midst of intense suffering. I recommend this book for those who have suffered a loss or will in the future. In short, everyone!
Customer Reviews:
Refreshingly different.......2000-04-27
If you're tired of the usual spaceship sci fi, and elves and dragons fantasy, then try this book. It's different! It's set on a tourist planet whose economy revolves around artists, in a universe where space travel is common. There are mysteries to solve, and some nice characterizations of human nature, with subtle humour throughout. The author uses a new perspective which I found very refreshing.

Customer Reviews:
Poor service -- very poor follow-up........2006-08-28
As part of a $250.00 order, I ordered the Michelin France Provence map in English, and the Michelin 2006 Red Guide France: Hotels and Restaurants in English - both Items they sent me were written in French, which are of no value to me. I requested a shipping label to return the map and the book and asked they send me the English versions. The Amazon Outsourcing Desk in India refused both request. I requested an American Amazon Customer Service Manager contact me on this Issue. That has never happened. I am also being asked my Satisfaction on a 3d book - Markets Of Provence - which they never sent me. The remainder of my $250.00 order were the English Versions, as ordered. My Overall Satisfaction: Well below the 1 Star shown. Actual Satisfaction "F Minus" for all departments in Amazon and far less for their very poor Customer Service and lack of ethical follow-up for their mistake.
Wonderful! A tour of Provence even when you can't travel........2005-05-26
This book is a lovely guide for those who plan to travel to Provence as well as those who cannot. It is lovely - just lovely. Beautiful photographs, wonderful insights and descriptions off the beaten path. I high recommend this book.
Perfect For Trips Or Just Some Dreaming..................2000-07-30
If you or anyone you know plans a trip to Provence, make sure this book goes too! It is an excellent guide to the wonderful Provencal outdoor markets. If you want to experience Provence at its finest, this is one of the very best guide.
Full of gorgeous color photos, this is a beautiful as well as helpful book. After the trip, it is wonderful to go through the book again and savor all of the great memories. For the finest produce, cheese and other delights of the South, this book is a must have!
you can almost smell the lavender.......2000-05-17
This excellent book was in the kitchen of a house we rented a couple of years ago in Caromb, northeast of Avignon. Not only were the lists of daily markets invaluable, but the recipe for quails with spring onions on tapenade-covered croutons, for example, allowed us to make good use of local products. (With all those fabulous tapenades available at market, I did not make my own, as the recipe suggests.) Patricia Wells's introduction reminds you of her own invaluable guides to food throughout France, and her inspiration and influence are apparent throughout the book -- the level of knowledge, enthusiasm, and appreciation for the wonders of Provençal food is engaging and contagious. The illustrations remind you of places you've been away from too long and get the juices flowing for a return visit for markets you missed the last time.
Absolutely marvelous!.......1999-06-25
My cousin and I just returned from a 9-day trip to Southern France. Our highlights can all be found in this wonderful book. We met Henri Tomas and taste-tested and approved the Galette specialty of the house; taste-tested and brought back many bottles of wine from Chateau La Canorgue. We followed the suggestions and pretty much made the rounds to all of the sites. Our last evening in Provence, we sampled the goat cheese, bread from Henri Tomas' patisserie and the wine...we added our own Picheline olives and fresh market tomatoes to make our meal complete...what a last supper to have in France. Joy of Life, Indeed!!!!!! Thanks for making our trip a 10++++++.
