Book Description
In 1915, long since retired from his observations of criminal humanity, Sherlock Holmes is engaged in a reclusive study of honeybee behavior on the Sussex Downs. Never did he think to meet an intellect to match his own–until his acquaintance with Miss Mary Russell, a very modern fifteen-year-old whose mental acuity is equaled only by her audacity, tenacity, and penchant for trousers and cloth caps.
Under Holmes’s tutelage, Russell hones her talent for deduction, disguises, and danger: in the chilling case of a landowner’s mysterious fever and in a kidnapping in the wilds of Wales. But her ultimate challenge is yet to come. Soon the two sleuths are on the trail of a murderer whose machinations scatter meaningless clues…but whose objective is quite unequivocal: to end Russell and Holmes’s partnership–and their lives.

reprint of the first Russell-Holmes collaboration .......2007-10-06
In 1915 fifteen year old expatriate American orphan Mary Russell meets retired detective Sherlock Holmes in Sussex Downs. The sleuth finds the feisty intelligent heiress much more refreshing than the bees he normally communicates with. He decides to make her his apprentice in the science of detecting on the condition she keeps her studies at Oxford up. When she is at her new home, her aunt's house, and he on a case, he will train her.
She works a few minor cases for Holmes when they are asked to investigate the kidnapping of American senator Simpson in Wales. They quickly conclude that a genius is behind the abduction of Jessica. After Russell proves her worth by rescuing Jessica, someone tries to kill her, Holmes and Dr. Watson. The sleuths believe the same criminal behind the kidnapping wants to destroy Holmes.
This is a reprint of the first Russell-Holmes collaboration and though over a decade old with several subsequent sequels since, THE BEEKEEPER'S APPRENTICE retains a freshness. The story line grips the audience from the moment the precocious teen meets the beekeeper partly because of the terrific rendition of the lead characters as Homes seems Doyle like and more and partly because England in WW I comes alive. The mystery is clever, but it is the meeting of the minds that makes Laurie R. King's tale more than just a well done homage.

Laurie King Strikes Gold Again.......2007-08-26
A clever premise - that a much younger woman would become an apprentice to Sherlock Holmes and that a relationship would develop from that - is coupled with a strong sense of how Holmesian crime investigations would be seen through the eyes of an apprentice. Ms. King ably pulls it off from start to finish, and leaves you wanting a lot more stories.
Sherlock Holmes -- a different twist.......2007-08-07
I should probably preface this by saying that I've not read Sherlock Holmes in depth. I have just enough knowledge of him to appreciate the jabs that he and the other main character, Mary Russell, take at Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in this book. I will say that I found this to be an enjoyable read. It's a fun notion to have Holmes taking on an apprentice, and a rather unlikely one in the teen aged girl, Mary. She proves to be close to his intellectual equal and the story takes off from there. He trains her. They solve mysteries. Their relationship evolves. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in this series.
Nancy Drew meets Holmes.......2007-07-27
This is the first time that I choose not to finish a book. The reason: this book is really dissapointing. It is not a mistery book neither a romantic story.
First, the story is a collage of incredible situations created for introduce Mary Russell to the reader. There are key sentences like: "Always carry a length of rope; it's the most useful thing of the world". At the end you can ask: so what?
Second, the character. I can believe in Katie Martinelli but not in Mary Russell. This girl is so smart, so clever, so ... that is really unbearable and she finally does not need Holmes. We do not need a female clone of Holmes. Why torture Conan Doyle and his readers with this kind of story?
Third, the lack of respect. Nobody who knows the Holmes Canon can talk of Watson like Russell does. She even mention that sometimes he was "tipsy".
Finally, I cannot believe that this book be considered as one of the century best misteries, together with "Roger Ackroyd" of Agatha Christie.
Do not waste your time and money. If you want read a tribute to Holmes, please give a chance to "The final solution" by Michael Chabon.
Sorry, Ms Laurie King. I sincerely hope Mary Russell burn in the hell of the bad ideas.
Hmm, Not Sure.......2007-06-22
I'm just not sure about this book. I was torn. I really loved the concept of Sherlock Holmes having a young apprentice to show the ropes to. Mary Russell is his match, but I'm not sure how I felt about how the book flowed. There were times that I felt like it was dragging things out. There were other times that I couldn't put it down because I wanted to know what happened next. It's a good starter book for a series but not great. I enjoyed the interaction between the characters most of the time while other times it was just frustrating and confusing. I'm going to give this series a true chance and read the next book or two in it. But I'm just not sure about it. I really enjoy Ms. King's other series better so far. It's interesting, but not great.

Unexpectedly Wonderful.......2006-11-27
Someone at the library recommended this to me as I was perusing the shelves. After reading the summary, I contemptuously put the audio version back on the shelf; after all, if an author has to use someone else's characters (Sherlock Holmes and company) to come up with a story, she can't possibly be good. But, when continued scrutiny of my choices offered nothing better, I checked out the Beekeeper's Apprentice anyway. I am glad I did! Despite using Sherlock Holmes, the story is completely original. The main character is Mary Russel, whose chance encounter with an older, retired Sherlock Holmes results in his taking her on as his apprentice. The characters are well developed, the plot interesting, and the overall "read" is very enjoyable. Plus, Jenny Sterlin (the narrator of the audio versions) is quite gifted at bringing the story to life.

"It's called the Mal'eb'dala, The Book of the Shadows".......2005-01-22
In Crypt of the Shadowking, Caledan Caldorien, a former Harper finds himself involved in trying to save the city of Iriaebor and its citizens from the sinister Zhentarim, led by his dead fiancés sister. Together with Mari Al'maren, an active Harper, and his old adventuring companions from the Fellowship of the Dreaming Dragon, he sets out to spoil the villain's plans.
The book is very well written, and the reader feels that they have been transported to another universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense.
On the negative side, HOW did a city like Iriaebor, City of a Thousand Spires, fall so easily and quietly under the control of the Zhentarim and WHY did the city's prominent/powerful citizens not put up so much as a fight for over a year, when it was evident as to who Lord Ravendas was, not to mention the presence of Zhents among (actually dominating) the military/city guard?
Moreover, where is the outside intervention that would surely come if and when a city the caliber of Iriaebor ever fell to the Black Network? Crusades would be undertaken to expel the Keep's agents from the City.
The only resistance comes from a Thieves' Guild and the Harpers, with the latter using "green" Mari, and "uncooperative" Calderon?
By no means does this make Curse of the Shadowmage a bad book; the plot, the writing and the characters are very well thought out and presented!
The story of Verraketh, the sorcerer, who becomes the Shadowking, along with the Nightstone, with which he "meant to gain sway over the spirits of men and bring countless realms under his dire rule" (Pp150) are GREAT.
Moreover, the Shadevar was an interesting addition to the story.
Zhents, assassins, love, duty, honor, bravery, magic, and swordfights are all about.
Strongly recommended along with Mark Anthony's Curse of the Shadowmage, which is the sequel to Crypt of the Shadowking, as well as The Shadow Stone by Richard Baker for a good dose of Shadow Magic.
A good story but not very memorable........2003-10-20
I really thought this book was well written with a good plot and characters. Unfortunately, it seemed to lack something that would otherwise have made it stood out as superb. Caledan is a fascinating character who becomes entwined with Mari while investigating problems in the city of Iriaebor. One of the better novels in the Harper series but i'd only recommend it to other fans of the Forgotten Realms setting.
Worst TSR book I've ever read.......2000-01-30
While this book had an OK beginning, the imagination and original creativity of the book quickly went out the window. There is a scene where a thief is being hung, but his friends just waltz on by and free him from execution...not a bad idea, but I saw it first in the movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves". And then the readers discover that the thief has a distinct personality which is none-too-subtlely ripped-off from the thief Silk in David Edding's books. I am abhorred that TSR actually published this book which barely retains a shred of true originality.
Action-packed high fantasy adventure won't disappoint........1999-02-14
This is a very entertaining, well-constructed novel. There is never a dull moment in Caledan and Mari's battle against the Zhentarim for control of the city of Iraiebor, from Caledan's unwelcome return to the city, rife with evil, to an all-out battle and just slightly predictable conclusion, as Caledan and an accompanying band of heroes race the Zhentarim's evil agents to discover the secret of the shadow magic. It's a page-turner, with chapters more often than not ending on cliffhangers. The book has its share of surprises, and the characters are introduced slowly and developed well. I found myself rooting for the main character, Caledan, to succeed and to "get the girl" Mari, which should happen considering this a tightly-plotted, quick moving novel focusing mainly on Caledan and his exploits as he reluctantly tries to wrest the city from evil's grasp. Anyone who just wants to have a good time reading an excellent adventure novel should try this. It leaves you wanting a sequel, or even a trilogy.
An excellent addtion to the Harpers series.......1999-02-09
This is a wonderful tale by Mark Anthony, ranking up there with the best Realms stories of Salvatore and Cunningham. The characterization is very good, and, as each character is introduced gradually, you get a good feel for their personalities. The writing style is smooth and flows very well from chapter to chapter; it's one of those compulsive reads you end staying up till 3:00 AM reading! The story itself is strong and imaginative, and while the climax is just a bit predictable, nevertheless it builds very well to an exciting conclusion. There is also a nice denouement, which ties up loose ends very well, something that not all Forgotten Realms authors are good at doing. Highly recommended, both for veteran readers of the Realms and fantasy in general, as well as newcomers!

Great Book!!!.......2006-07-10
Would recommend this book to anyone. Very exciting and made you want to read on to the next chapter!
Dude, you seriously need to chill.......2005-02-17
In the second book our weary traveller's end up at a mall populated by people who have bible verses for names. At first it seems like a safe-haven filled with adults to feed and take care of them.
But, Angerman begins to get more unstable amoung these people. They begin to separate the kids, dividing and conquering them easily, especially Hunter who longs for the approval of other men. Their sacred book has been separated from them, the twins have been taken away and they are not allowed to see them.
What is going on? And who is this mysterious new girl?
This book is the powerful sequel to Fire-Us, The Kindling. It is just as disturbing, chilling and exciting. A great book with powerful themes.
Very well-done.......2004-03-06
...In the second installment of the Fire-us, we pick up where The Kindling left off. The Family, consisting of Mommy, Hunter, Teacher, Action Figure, Teddy Bear, Baby, and Doll, with newcomers Angerman, Puppy, and Kitty, have been welcomed into a secret society of religious adults who had survived the deadly Fire-Us. They soon discover (some later than others)that this new-found paradise may be darker than it looks, and they are not as safe as they think they are.
This book was my least-favorite in the Trilogy, not through any fault of its own, but because I love the other two more. Though I have difficulty sympathizing with the new heroine introduced in The Keepers (Cory, a girl with a strange past), I feel the character development was wonderful; we see how our heros are, essentially, growing up, as afraid as they are of it.
Beautiful writing and gripping plot: 4 stars.
EXCELLENT WRITING WITH A TRAGICALLY FLAWED PREMISE.......2003-10-03
EXCELLENT WRITING WITH A TRAGICALLY FLAWED PREMISE
The Fire-Us trilogy is an entertaining post-apocalyptic thriller for those who are too young to remember the fears of nuclear annihilation that came to an end in the 1990's.
Unfortunately, in the final installment, the authors' political biases become all to clear.
For adult readers, this trilogy is an example of the kinds of evil allegations that our currend political Left is willing to spread about conservatives. If a conservative writer were to say such things about liberals he or she would be called a witch hunter, a McCarthyite, or worse. But so be it. The tale itself is entertaining enough on its own merits.
THE KEEPERS OF THE FLAME, introduces us to a religious cult by that name. It quickly becomes clear that The Flame is the same disaster that the children have always called Fire-Us.
In the first chapter we meet Cory, whose name with the Keepers is Corinthians 1:19. All the Keepers' names are Bible references. Cory is preparing for her wedding to Supreme Leader, who lives on Pisgah Island. She is deeply disturbed by what she saw in her Visioning in preparation for her wedding.
We learn that she once had an older sister named Ingrid who had been a Keeper before she fled after giving birth to the twins that the children call Puppy and Kitty. The Keepers welcome the children, but ominous signs quickly develop. Teacher wakes up to find that her Book has disappeared. The Keepers take charge of Puppy and Kitty and will not allow the rest of the band to see them. The group notices evidence of fire and observe that there are no books in the shopping mall known as the Crossroads. The shelves of the bookstores are all empty. Hunter faces a personal crisis. Concern for Puppy and Kitty rises higher when it becomes clear that they are Ingrid's twins. All such children must be taken to Pisgah for a mysterious Testing. None have ever returned. When a special rally announces that all the children will join the Keepers, they demand that Teacher must burn her Book.
The group manages to rescue Puppy and Kitty and escape, accompanied by Cory whose doubts have been growing as much because of her Visioning as by anything else. As the story ends, the group is pressing on to Pisgah where President is presumably being held by the Keepers. At a Civil War museum, Teacher and Cory become separated from the rest. But a mysterious message in the Book seems to give a clue where to find the rest.
Product Description
Understanding Wine Technology was originally written for students of the diploma examination of the Wines & Spirits Education Trust in the United Kingdom, and the Master of Wine examination as set by the Institute of Masters of Wine. However, this is the only book to explain the complexities of the science and technology of wine in simple terms, and therefore fills a gap in the large market of wine information by making wines technical mysteries accessible to those with no scientific education. This new edition brings the literature up-to-date, relaying in its plainspoken tradition the recent advances in wine science and technology. The topics covered range from the secrets of the vineyard, the processing of grapes to produce juice, the intricacies of fermentation, stabilization of the resulting wine, treatments, quality control and quality assurance, and bottling.
Customer Reviews:
Wine science for non-winemakers.......2007-09-03
I am a wine professional (non-winemaker) who wanted to understand better the science behind making wine in preparation for the WSET Diploma and possibly MW. This book was perfect! As others have said, it is approachable by a non-scientist, but without being "dumbed-down". I keep it as a reference source for any basic oenology questions that come along.
Understanding Wine Technology: The Science of Wine Explained, New Edition .......2007-08-14
I have been in the sales end of the wine business for nearly 20 years, in restaurants and wholesale / supply end. This is a great tool to take your knowledge a step further than just what you learn from tastings. Easy to understand and well structured format, it gives the wine enthusiast insight into the "whys" of wine.
Wine Technology Made Simple.......2007-01-10
This is a very clear and straightforward description of the winemaking process and the choices winemakers have to make when buying equipment and choosing among alternative process. Anyone who wants to delve into how wine goes from grapes to wine will find this book a valuable read and will clearly understand all the various and many choices winemakers have to make. In addition to interested observers it will also be found useful by the home winemaker.
One of the best winemaking books.......2007-01-09
Exellent introduction to the scientific approach to winemaking. To be recomended. jbroe
well written but not quite comprehensive.......2006-01-27
Clearly written and a quick read, but don't be fooled: there is a lot of solid technical information here, including one of the best published reviews of filtration, and an excellent overview of additives. Clarity here is due to good writing and careful exposition, not by dumbing down the topic. The book was written for classroom use, for instance by students preparing for the WSET Diploma Examination, and also succeeds as a text for someone who understands the basics of winemaking but wants to know the why as well as the what.
However, the chapter on fermentation is a bit brief for its intended role as a textbook, and faults merit only a few pages. A lack of a bibliography (other than a few scattered references to journal articles) also counts against it. I recommend supplementing with another text such as Rankine's "Making Good Wine" (ISBN 140503601X) or a reference work such as Jackson's "Wine Science".
(Note: A newer edition is now available, it might address some of the above criticisms.)
This is a book worth owning and reading, but it will not provide all the answers.
