Book Description
One of the few works of fiction in the 20th century to explore the dangerous yet glamorous appeal of fascism and the less than satisfactory answer of traditional democracy. A moral dialogue thrown into narrative form. It is humanity versus power, sprawling life versus death-dealing regimentation. --New York Times. Introduction by Anthony Burgess.Customer Reviews:
Heaven and hell.......2003-06-03
ranks with Orwell & Koestler.......2001-06-08
One strange deficiency in the literature of the 20th Century is the relative paucity of novels about fascism, its attractions and its awful consequences for those who believed. Sure, there are plenty of books about the Holocaust, but almost all are written from the victims' perspective. But while we have a rich literature depicting the mindset of Communists (Arthur Koestler, George Orwell, etc.), there aren't many similar books describing how someone, a young idealist perhaps, might have been drawn to fascism, even Nazism, but then been disillusioned, or even eaten by the revolution they helped to foment.
In at least this regard, Rex Warner's Aerodrome may well be the best novel ever written about fascism. The book is a pretty simple allegory--which though the critics I was able to find say was influenced mainly by Kafka, seemed to me to owe much more to Orwell's Coming Up for Air. The narrator, Roy, has grown up in The Village, a bucolic country town with more than its share of drunkenness, adultery, and incest. Bordering on the Village is the Aerodrome, clean, orderly, modern, technological, it represents everything that the Village is not.
Amidst a burgeoning mystery over who his real parents are, Roy joins the Air Force, drawn by its orderliness, attempting to please his girlfriend, and deeply impressed by the rigid but charismatic Air Vice-Marshal. The Vice-Marshal is determined to expand the Aerodrome and bring the Village under his control, remaking it in the same sterile image as the Aerodrome.
Roy meanwhile comes to realize that for all the disorder and human frailty on display in his home town, it is at least alive with possibilities :
I began to see that this life, in spite of its drunkenness and its inefficiency, was wider and deeper than the activity in which we were constricted by the iron compulsion of the Air Vice-Marshal's ambition. It was a life whose very vagueness concealed a wealth of opportunity, whose uncertainty called for adventure, whose aspects were innumerable and varied as the changes of light and colour throughout the year. It was a life whose unwieldiness was the consequence of its immensity. No skill could precisely calculate the effects of any action, and all action was dangerous.
There, in a nutshell, is the human dilemma : on the one hand we long for a world that would be safe and predictable and would yield to calculation, but, on the other, such calculations are beyond our meager mortal powers, so that whenever folks seek to impose order, they succeed merely in eliminating freedom and stifling progress. The appeal of fascism--or communism, or Nazism, or all the other -isms--is precisely that it holds out the promise of having finally invented the human calculus which will provide security, without any of the nasty side effects. That this appeal has always proven false does not seem to dampen the human need for, nor the responsiveness to, such promises.
Perhaps the best aspect of this novel is its timelessness. Though it is clearly a comment upon the 1930s and 40s, the Village, with its verdant fields, its convoluted genealogies, its interfamilial murders, and lurking just across the way the orderly utopia of the Aerodrome, suggests Man after the Fall as much as it does Britain just before WWII. The themes that Warner is dealing with are eternal. That he manages to present them in such a natural and readable way makes the book one that everyone should read.

Timing is terrible.......2002-02-23
Fragmentation of parallel events thorughout the books could not be any worse. They are always ending too quickly and the book jumps to the next so your enjoyment of the current event is kept too short. I think the author should look at Dragonlance classics series to see examples of how this should have been done. Also, those events do not occur in a proper time order. When you start reading the next section which writes about some other hero group, you sometimes understand current time should be before the previous section, or timing is much much more unrealistic than you've previously thought (even cases such as a few months trip taken in moments). These are very amateurish in my idea and had a quite bad impact of my enjoyment of the book. Actually I'm pretty surprised how other people rated this book so high.

Gourmet Fast Food.......2001-05-15
In Ainsley Harriott's Gourmet Express, you will enjoy the tastiest of fast foods. There are six chapters to show how fast food can be made at any time of the day. The "Snack Attack" chapter includes delicious Celtic Samosas, a Hot Crispy Cajun Chicken Sandwich and even a recipe on how to make Nori-rolled Sushi.
After learning to do the "pan swivel" from his show, in which you swirl items around in the pan while looking most confident :)...I thought I would try some of Ainsley Harriott's recipes. That one technique where he swirls the food around in the pan has been very helpful for me when I make my turkey meatball recipe. It helps to brown all the sides of the meatballs evenly. Who would have known.
Well, I tried the "Parisian Mustard Sausage Rolls" which were just smashing. Now, I did have to use Crescent roll dough, which did work quite well and I used breakfast pork sausage links. We served the rolls with eggs and orange juice for breakfast.
I find that when cooking from a cookbook by a chef, you can adapt the recipes slightly to your own taste. I left out the Dijon mustard and they were still very good. While this recipe was in the "Snack Attack" chapter, they work very well to add a gourmet flair to a breakfast plate. I will also keep this recipe in mind for a brunch.
I am looking forward to making Butternut Squash Spiced Soup, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Lightning Lamb Dhansak (great picture!), Baconeese, Citrus Couscous, Golden Raisin Salad and Banana Raita. Each recipe has a nice bold heading and the text is easy to read. There is a headnote from Ainsley to add a pleasant personal touch.
"You know what it's like: home late from work and you'd love a delicious supper, well...a touch of French pistou blended with some al dente Italian pasta and you have the perfect answer....." pg. 95, Premier Pistou-Pasta
The colors in this book are delightfully refreshing and almost tranquil. If you are a cookbook collector, you will enjoy reading the headnotes at the beginning of each recipe and the "Try This" or "Chef's Tips" info at the end of some recipes.
Chef Ainsley gives advice on how to adapt a recipe, why you shouldn't make a recipe with fresh herbs too far ahead of time, how to make use of frozen foods like rice or how to completely change a recipe by substituting various ingredients.
So, if you are looking for tasty sandwiches, hot snacks, delicious soups, mouthwatering curries, mini-pizzas and pastas you can make in a hurry, you will enjoy some great fast food at home.
If you love this book, look for Ainsley Harriott's Meals in Minutes and Ainsley Harriott's Barbecue Bible.
Delicious Food, Great Recipes.......2001-01-16
The recipes are very delicious, although one of the recipes I tried took longer to cook than indicated. The Baconese potatoes were a big hit. If there was one thing wrong with the book it is that the conversions are a little off. Where most cookbooks would say 1/4 cup of ingredient, Ainsley says 3oz. of ingredient for the American conversions. Also the book is a little inconsistent in that sometimes the British units are in parentheses and sometime the American units are in parentheses.
My overall rating is great recipes but you need to do a little math to do the conversions in you head.
